I teach 15 to 18-year-olds, so I try to make my lessons as fun as possible. Most of my students try really hard in lessons and they are enthusiastic about learning English. However, I sometimes have to nudge(推)students who have fallen asleep in the middle of a lesson! One or two students fall asleep in my class every day. I solve this problem by explaining to my students that if I catch them sleeping then they have to answer a question about the day’s learning in front of the class. This has worked very well in my lessons, but I still wanted to know why I had such sleepy students. This is what I have discovered:At my school the first lesson of the day starts at 7:30 am and the last lesson does not finish until 9:30 pm. The students get 10 minutes of free time between each class, plus longer break time for their lunch and dinner. During their lunch break at about 1:30 pm, the school is quiet and the playground is deserted, because every classroom is full of students who are fast asleep. I have also found out that students are expected to attend school on the weekends for extra lessons. When I was a teenager in London, I started school at 8:30 am and finished at 3:30 pm every day. I had weekends to myself and had dinner with my family or friends, usually in my own home. Discovering how hard my students work made me more understanding about their accidental nap(打盹)in the classroom!4. What is it that upsets the author?A. Students aren’t interested in English.B. He finds it hard to get on well with students.C. Some students often sleep in his classes.D. He doesn’t know how to make his lessons fun.5. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?A. There are no sleepy students in class.B. The author’s lessons are more attractive.C. Many students cannot answer the questions.D. No students want to be punished for sleeping.6. What does the underlined word “deserted”mean?A. crowdedB. wastedC. emptyD. clean7. What has the author discovered?A. British students don’t study hard.B. British students waste a lot of time.C. Chinese students are short of sleep.D. Chinese students have better grades.CIn a forest there was a lake. In this lake there lived a crab(蟹). The crab’s best friend was a swan(天鹅), who lived in the same lake. One year, every time the swan laid an egg, a snake living by the lake would come and eat it up. One day, the swan went to the crab and said, “That cruel snake eats all my eggs in the nest(窝). What can I do?”The crab decided to help his best friend. He had an idea and told his friend what they should do.By the lake, there also lived a mongoose(猫鼬). The crab and the swan caught some fish and dropped them from the mongoose’s house all the way to the snake’s house. When the mongoose came out, he saw the fish. He happily ate all of them one by one. As he ate, he kept following the fish trail to the snake’s house. Finally, the mongoose reached the house of the snake. When the snake saw the mongoose, he thought the mongoose was there to attack him. They started fighting until the snake was finally killed.Watching this behind the tree, the swan and the crab became very happy. Some days later, the mongoose, looking for more fish, came upon the swan’s nest. There the mongoose found the eggs of the swan. He immediately ate all of them. The swan and the crab now felt helpless. They had brought this new threat(威胁)by themselves. They did not know that the mongoose was a dangerous helper.8. Why did the swan feel troubled?A. All he did after work was taking care of his family.I grew up and left home for college and since then, my dad had been calling me every Sunday morning. 2019学年河北省高一下学期第一次月考英语试卷【含答案及解析】

2019学年河北省高一下学期第一次月考英语试卷【含答案及解析】姓名___________ 班级____________ 分数__________一、阅读理解1. Now many young people are traveling around the world on their own, not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.Kristina Wegscheider from California first traveled alone when she was at college and believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life. “It opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone.” Wegscheider has visited 46 countries coveringall seven continents. In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you moneyif your wallet is stolen, it is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen ascharacter building and a chance to prove that they canmake it on their own.Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job inAustralia to go traveling last year. He set up a website, The Aussie Nomad, to document his adventures. He says he wished he had traveled alone earlier. “The people you meet, the places you visit, or the things you do, everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person,”said the 30-year-old man.Richardson describes traveling alone like “a shot in the arm”, which “makes you a more confident person that is ready to deal with anything”. He said, “The feeling of having overcome something on my own is a major part of what drives me e ach day when I’m dealing with a difficulttask. I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try.”The great 19 th century explorer John Muir once said, “Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness.”1. Which of the following will Kristina Wegscheider agree with?A. Traveling alone is a necessary experience for everyone.B. It is more meaningful to travel in foreign countries.C. It is comfortable to travel around without a friend.D. Traveling abroad helps people to find new things.2. Traveling alone is challenging because ________.A. you have to make things on your ownB. it is hard for you to prove yourself to othersC. you can only depend on yourself whatever happensD. it will finally build your character3. What can we infer about Chris Richardson?A. He started traveling alone at an early age.B. He was once shot in the arm.C. He used to work as a salesman.D. His website inspires others a lot.4. What is the best title for the passage?A. Travel AbroadB. Travel AloneC. Travel Light______________D. Travel Wide and Far2. Have you felt annoyed when a cellphone rings during the class? Something must be done to stop this. Now in New York City, USA, a rule is carried out in schools. Students can’t even bring cellphones to school. Is it a good thingor not?Anxious parents say that cell phones are an important tool in holding NewYork City’s families together."I worry about it," said Elizabeth Lorries Ritter, a mother of a middle school kid. It’s necessary in our everyday life. We have a washing machine. We have running water, and we have cell phones."Many American parents think cell phones connect them to their children on buses, getting out from subways, and walking through unknown places."I have her call me when she gets out of school,"said Lindsay Walt, a schoolgirl’s mother."No one in New York is going to let their child go to school without a cell phone."What about the cell phone owners, the students? Most of the students saidcell phones were essential and the cell phone was like an extra hand or footfor them."I feel so empty,"said May Chom, 14. "There is also no way to listen to music on the way to school without my phone. It will be a really, reallyboring trip."1. Students often use a cell phone _____________.A. to enjoy listening to musicB. to make phone calls to their teachersC. to walk as an extra footD. to work as a washing machine2. According to the passage, _____________.A. many American parents don’t think cell phones are necessary for the studentsB. cell phones only bring troubles to the school lifeC. cell phones connect children with their families when they are outsideD. cell phones can help students learn better3. Supportive.B. Negative.C. Objective.D. Doubtful.3. "Have a nice day!" may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. When my friend Maxie says "Have a nice day!" with a smile, I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me. I feel loved and secure sinceanother person cares about me and wishes me well."Have a nice day. Next!" This version(版本) of the expression is spoken bya salesgirl at the supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries(食品杂货)out of the door. The words come out in the same tone with a fixed procedure. They are spoken at me, not to me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyone else’s is the management’s attempt to increase business. The expression is one of those behaviors that help people get along with each other. Sometimes it indicates the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it,you know the meeting is at an end. Sometimes the expression saves us when we don’t know what to say, like"Oh, you just had a tooth out? I’m terribly sorry, but have a nice day."The expression can be pleasant. If a stranger says "Have a nice day" to you, you may find it heart-warming because someone you don’t know has tried to be nice to you.Although the use of the expression is an insincere, meaningless social custom at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that others whospeak it without thinking may not really care about my day. But in a strangeand comfortable way, it’s nice to know they care enough to pretend they care when they really don’t care all that much. While the expression may not often be sincere, it is always spoken. The point is that people say it all the time when they like.1. By saying "Have a nice day" a stranger may___________.A. express respect to youB. give his blessing to youC. try to be friendly to youD. share his pleasure with you2. What is the best title of the passage?A. Have a Nice Day — a Meaningless ExpressionB. Have a Nice Day — a Heart-warming GreetingC. Have a Nice Day — a Social CustomD. Have a Nice Day — a Polite Ending of a Conversation二、七选五4. 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

"No one in New York is going to let their child go to school without a cell phone."What about the cell phone owners, the students? Most of the students said cell phones were essential and the cell phone was like an extra hand or foot for them."I feel so empty, "said May Chom, 14. "There is also no way to listen tomusic on the way to school without my phone. It will be a really, really boring trip. "1. "may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. When my friend Maxie says "Have a nice day! "with a smile, I know shesincerely cares about what happens to me. I feel loved and secure since another person cares about me and wishes me well."Have a nice day. Next! "This version(版本) of the expression is spoken bya salesgirl at the supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries(食品杂货)out of the door. The words come out in the same tone with a fixed procedure. They are spoken at me, not to me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyone else ' s is the management ' s attempt to increase business. The expression is one of those behaviors that help people get along with each other. Sometimes it indicates the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you know the meeting is at an end. Sometimes the expression saves us when we don' t know what to say, like "Oh, you just had a tooth out? I' m terriblysorry, but have a nice day. "The expression can be pleasant. If a stranger says "Have a nice day "to you,you may find it heart- warming because someone you don ' t know has tried to benice to you.Although the use of the expression is an insincere, meaningless social custom at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that others who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day. But in a strangeand comfortable way, it ' s nice to know they care enough to pretend they care when they really don ' t care all that much. While the expression may not oftenbe sincere, it is always spoken. The point is that people say it all the time when they like.1. By saying "Have a nice day "a stranger may ____________ .A. express respect to youB. give his blessing to youC. try to be friendly to youD. share his pleasure with you2. Please come and help her.”His grandmother then immediately called Mrs. Green’s best friend, Kara McCoy, who lived on the same street. Six doctors spent two hours trying to bring Mrs. Green back to life before she was taken to hospital. To show how lucky the woman was.CMany facts suggest that children are overweight and the situation is getting worse, according to the doctors. I feel there are a number of reasons for this. Some people blame the fact that we are surrounded by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried chicken and ice cream, at low prices. This has turned out a whole generation of grown-ups who seldom cook a meal for themselves. If there were fewer of these restaurants, then probably children would buy less take-away food. There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight. I agree with this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, or are always allowed to choose what they eat, they will go for sweet and salty foods every time, and this will carry on throughout their lives. There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers and play computer games. Not only is this an unhealthy pastime(消遣), it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food. What they need is to go outside and play active games or sports. The above are the main reasons for this problem, and therefore we have to encourage young people to be more active, as well as steering them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.28. According to the text, what kind of children may eat more unhealthy food?___A. Those who often do sports.B. Those who often watch television.C. Those who often have meals at home.D. Those who often walk to school.29. The author thinks that children are becoming overweight because_____________A. they can't choose what to eatB. they are too busy to go out and playC. their parents often cook meals for themD. there are too many fast food shops around30. The word "steering" underlined in the last sentence most probably means_____________.A. forcingB. guidingC. drivingD. moving31. The main purpose of the text is to___________________.A.tell a storyB. provide factsC. give adviceD. compare opinions.DAutumn blues? Let the sunshine in falling leaves, flowers, and cold winds. For many people late autumn can be a season of depression. Those who suffer from “the autumn blue”are often extremely tired, lack energy, need more sleep, feel increased appetite and gain weight. “The exact cause of this condition, often called seasonal depression or seasonal affective disorder(SAD), is not known yet,”says Chen Jue, associate professor at Shanghai Mental Health Center.“But recent studies indicate that weather change is influential and strongly suggest that this condition is caused by changes in the availability(得到)of sunlight.”One theory is that with decreased exposure to sunlight, the biological clock that regulates mood, sleep, and hormones is delayed, running more slowly in winter. Exposure to light may reset the biological clock. Another theory is that brain chemicals that transmit information between nerves, called neurotransmitters(for example, serotonin), may be altered in individuals with SAD. It is believed that exposure to light can correct these imbalances. “It is a sad season, but you can try to make it happy. Remember, spring always lives in your heart ,”Chen says. “Going outdoors to get some sunlight may reduce the tension that brings you the low spirits. Relax at work. Stretch and breathe deeply. Take a tea break. Think of your next vacation. Color treatment also works in handling low mood. Music also plays a role in treating autumn blues.”32. Autumn blues is also called autumn _______.A. depressionB. sunshineC. blue musicD. cold winds33. From the 3rd paragraph we know that there ______ that can help to deal withautumn blues.A. is no biological clockB. are real examplesC. is no possibilityD. are some ways34.
