简单地说，早期的物流概念就是指商品实体的储存与运输，即商品的空间位移。
20世纪80年代物流的概念普遍用Logistics取代PD。
“Logistics”的愿意为“后勤”，这是第二次世界大战中，军队在运输武器、弹药与粮食等给养时使用的一个名词。
它是为维持战争需要的一种后勤保障系统。
1985年美国物流管理协会正式将名称National Council of Physical Distribution Management改为National Council of Logistics Management。
