专业英语八级(作文)模拟试卷76(题后含答案及解析)

专业英语八级(作文)模拟试卷76(题后含答案及解析)题型有:1. summarize briefly both merits and demerits of lottery; 2. express your opinion towards lottery, especially whether national lotteries should be abolished. The Good and Bad of National Lotteries Lotteries and prize draws are big businesses throughout the world, and entice significant annual investments from individuals who dream of scooping a huge and potentially life-changing cash prize. According to the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries, Americans spent a total of $50.4 billion on lotteries last year. In actual fact, while your chances of winning the lottery anywhere are decidedly slim, the sheer size of the U.S. population and popularity of the game means that Americans must climb an even steeper mountain towards any potential windfall. This was evident to see in the formative part of this year, as the nation’s Mega Millions jackpot soared to $656 million. When the first winner was announced, an estimated 1.5 billion tickets had been sold nationwide. Americans still invested more than $1 billion into chasing their fanciful dreams of wealth and fortune. This is reflective of a growing trend, where lottery sales continue to soar despite the uncertain economic climate. There has been a significant rise in the number of syndicates that are purchasing tickets. This proves that rather than being discouraged by the seeming insurmountable odds of victory, Americans are instead looking for innovative ways to improve their chances and actively investing more into buying tickets. Now, while an estimated one in three global lotteries are won by syndicates, the likelihood of winning remains remote in the extreme. Even for those who win the lottery, their financial future or long-term happiness is not necessarily secured. Acquiring huge sums of money can inspire any number of extreme emotive reactions. There are individual state statistics which suggest that the majority of people only purchase lottery tickets when the jackpot has been steadily building over a period of weeks, with just nine to 12% of Illinois residents playing regularly. This would suggest that rather than being symbolic of a growing gambling culture in the U.S., national lotteries are in fact played responsibly and only intermittently by most participants. Another factor in favor of lotteries is the money that they generate for state funded projects, with public education bodies in particular benefiting from the investment made by participants. People who play the lottery responsibly are contributing towards local community development, which actually means that their small weekly investment at least creates some form of social change. In terms of monetary value, 34 cents out of every $1 spent on lottery tickets is invested into education, with 58 cents being awarded to winners in the form of prizes and 6 cents paid to participating retailers for sales commissions. National lotteries across the globe are always likely to be the subject of extreme opinion and controversy. Europe is looking to invest more during periods of sustained austerity. The fact remains, however, that participants have an individual responsibility to play the game responsibly, and spend within their means while pursuing the dream of huge cash prizes. As long as they do so, then there is no reason why they cannot enjoy the lottery while also contributing to state fundededucational projects.正确答案:National Lotteries Should Be Preserved Both merits and demerits of lotteries are discussed in the article by the author who is in favor of lotteries. In terms of demerits, the likelihood of winning the lottery remains remote in the extreme and there is no guarantee that those who win the lottery can have their financial future or long-term happiness necessarily secured. When it conies to merits, the good news is that national lotteries are played responsibly and only intermittently by most participants and the money that lotteries generate contribute to social good. I am with the author and I do not think we should abolish national lotteries. First and foremost, national lotteries provide a chance for average people to wish for a fortune and contribute their bits to charities. However remote the chance is, lottery-purchasers can hope for a better and different life. Besides, should their dream not come true, they won’t be devastated, because their investment of lottery will go to the charity foundations which help out poor children in less developed areas. There is nothing more satisfying than an investment like lotteries, which are able to transform our life or the life of others. Whilst some people are worried that lotteries might lead people into the abyss of addiction, they are not as monstrous as other forms of gambling. The frequency of national lotteries is usually once a week or even twice a month, and it is impossible for people to be on a winning streak, which is the root cause for being addicted to casino gambling. Up till now, there are very few, if any, reports about people taking out all their savings or even borrowing against their houses to purchase lotteries. The concerns of addiction are hence exaggerated. In conclusion, national lotteries are both a hope given to those who want to live otherwise and a significant contribution to various social undertakings. Therefore, it should not be abolished simply because of the underserved concerns of addiction.解析:材料主要围绕彩票的利与弊展开阐述。

I think it’s not a good idea to randomly pair up students for the spoken English training after class. The reasons are as follows. To begin with, randomly pairing up students may lead to unbalanced language abilities within the groups. This can hinder the progress of students as the more advanced one may dominate the conversation, leaving little room for the other students to improve. Besides, students may feel uncomfortable or less motivated if paired with someone who they don’t get along with or have difficulty communicating with.My suggestion is to group students based on their language abilities or to let students choose their own partners. This way, everyone can feel more comfortable practicing and improving their spoken English together.Thank you for considering my suggestion.Yours sincerely,Li Hua【解析】Dear Ryan,【表达观点】I’m Li Hua from Class 3. 专业英语八级(作文)模拟试卷130(题后含答案及解析)

专业英语八级(作文)模拟试卷130(题后含答案及解析)题型有:1. summarize briefly the different opinions about this issue; 2. give your comment. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Write your article on ANSWER SHEET FOUR. Excerpt 1 The Media The Beijing News: It’s great for university libraries to offer free entry to the public. But at the same time, it will make the management work more difficult and the limited book and space resources in university libraries might be further squeezed. Thus, the government may consider offering some subsidies to universities as incentives to encourage more libraries to join the library alliance. However, only depending on universities and the government will not ensure the sustainable development of the free entry policy. Therefore, it’s necessary to absorb some social institutions and welfare organizations. For example, it’s a good idea to set up a community club that brings together resources of nearby universities and even middle schools. Local residents can use these resources as long as they pay a small sum of money to be members of this club. Community residents should also have the opportunity to serve as volunteers in university libraries. Guangming Daily: When university libraries offer free entry, it does not mean that readers can enter these libraries without any certificates. People must at least show their ID cards to enter university libraries. On campus, even for students and teachers in universities, they still need things like student certificates to enter their university libraries. Without basic requirements, university libraries will fall into kind of mess in many aspects. When the public is provided with free entry to university libraries, one striking problem is that they will surely compete with university students and teachers for the already limited books and space. In this sense, it requires the government to increase inputs in university libraries so that the free entry policy can be well implemented. If libraries find it impossible to satisfy both students’ and the public’s demands, students should be put first. After all, in China, the purpose of university libraries is to serve students and teachers for their learning, teaching and academic research. Excerpt 2The General Public Donald: If resources in university libraries are not fully utilized, it will be a big waste. Some people worry that free entry to these libraries will lead to overcrowded libraries on campus, but this is not certain.Maybe not a single outsider would go to visit university libraries. Nowadays, fewer and fewer people in China are interested in reading books. For example, you can always see people playing games on their cellphones, instead of reading. Thus, opening university libraries to the public is actually a way to encourage more people to pick up books. Daniel: To offer the public free entry to university libraries is now a mainstream idea. The question now is how to realize the openness. Nowadays, libraries’resources are kept in the form of databases. The traditional way of borrowing and lending books needs manpower and capital input. I think the most effective way is to open these databases to the public. Yang: Libraries’openness to the public needs those universities’proper arrangement. It’snecessary to avoid any conflict between students’use of libraries and that of the public. It needs a balance between ensuring the service to students and teachers and providing service to outsiders.正确答案:My View on University Libraries’ Opening to the Public The views, from both the media and the general public, concerning the controversial issue of whether university libraries should be open to the public seem to coincide. Free entry to university libraries benefits the general public in that it draws people now indulged in modern technology into reading. However, the management of the school should be upgraded and maybe it is better for the government to allocate capital to help universities tackle emerging problems. Besides, students instead of the outsiders should be given priority. Historically, public libraries act positively in provoking readers’ mindset. However, today, public libraries are far from satisfying the general public’s needs for lack of funds and poor management. University libraries’ opening to the public is being developed under such a background in China and I am also very supportive of this practice. Firstly, university libraries’ opening to the public will make it easier for more people to access books in universities and make reading books more convenient. Especially, some people may begin to love reading on the ground that they will get information or data easily and that they will probably love the environment a university library uniquely possesses, which undoubtedly does good to the readers. Secondly, a university library usually has many professional books or even the only existing copy which will benefit just a few professionals instead of the university’s undergraduates or postgraduates. In this case, opening to the public will help to make good use of such books. Thirdly, the idea that some college students and teachers hold, say, if universities open their libraries to outsiders, the limited book resources will be “invaded” and it will affect students’ normal study and life, is wrong because opening university libraries to the public asks for better management, which in turn will benefit the university. In particular, the opening of libraries shows the crux of education to help more people to improve. Moreover, socially, the university will play a positive role, which cannot be emphasized too much. Therefore, the university libraries’opening to the public will fulfil the function of a university to serve the society. Especially, at a time when nation-wide reading is advocated in the whole nation, the opening seems urgent and integrant.解析:本题讨论的是大学图书馆面向公众开放这一社会焦点问题。

You can easily spend a morning or an afternoon there. Taking a taxi or using a ride-hailing app would be the most convenient way to get there. It's also a good idea to bring some snacks and have a picnic in the park.Lastly, don't miss out on trying local cuisine. My top recommendations are Peking duck and dumplings. There are many restaurants that serve delicious dishes in the city center. Feel free to ask for recommendations when you arrive!I hope you find these suggestions helpful and enjoy your time in my city. Don't hesitate to let me know if you have any further questions. Looking forward to seeing you soon!Best regards,Li Hua2. 最近你们班级就是否使用电子设备学习进行了一场激烈的辩论。

Indeed, even different individuals may have different standards, tastes and expectations. However, as far as English is concerned, a set of basic characteristics, which are believed to be present in all good writing, have been promoted by educators in English-speaking countries. (1) They are; unity, coherence, emphasis, development and clarity. While these good old values are still relevant, today’s discussion of good writing focuses on a different set of concepts. I’ll define good writing using different terms; good writing is good thinking; good writing involves thoughtful revision; good writing is directed toward an audience; good writing achieves a clear purpose; good writing expresses ideas clearly. Firstly, good writing is good thinking. Good thinking leads to good writing, and muddy thinking can only result in muddy writing. As simple as that. Writing is a thinking process; it is not making a big deal out of nothing. (2) Good writing should be substantive, really having things to say. Not only having things to say, but also having insightful things to say about the topic. This concept is particularly important for you non-native speakers of English. You may tend to be overly concerned with being correct in grammar, spelling and mechanics. While good writing is expected to be free from grammatical and other errors, it is worth repeating here that (3) good writing is not good grammar or vice versa. At the advanced level, you should be much more concerned with higher and more important issues of writing in English. If you were excited at all by a piece of writing, most likely, it was for one or a combination of the following reasons; 1) because (4) it enlightens you or sheds light on the subject: 2) because you have felt something similar but in a rather vague and superficial way; 3) because (5) you have felt exactly the same. but have never been able to express yourself in such an effective and elegant manner. Secondly, good writing involves thoughtful revision. Although there are geniuses who are such inspired writers that they can produce great writings at the spur of the moment without having to revise as much as one word, such geniuses are few and far between. For the overwhelming majority of writers, good writing is ninety-nine percent hard work and one percent inspiration. Experienced writers subject their writings to numerous revisions before feeling satisfied. Lu Xun.the greatest modern Chinese writer, for example, talks about pacing pensively in the study for days searching for the right word. Thirdly, good writing is directed toward an audience. Notice the use of the word “ audience” here: it usually refers to viewers and listeners, but now its reference has expanded to include readers, too, particularly in discussions of writing. You should remember that what is appropriate for one kind of audience may not be appropriate for another. (7-2) The intended audience determines your choice of words, your sentence length and patterns, the overall tone, the details that would be included in your writing, etc. Fourthly, (8) good writing achieves a clear purpose. Good writing must achieve your intended purpose. If you want to write about how to make Jiaozi, your reader, after reading your writing, should get everything he or she needs to know about how to make Jiaozi, from the necessary ingredients to step by step instructions. If your purpose is to convey the sublime and soul-awakening beauty of the morning sun bursting out of the horizon in the misty Huangshan Mountain in Anhui Province, you should describe it in such a way that your readers should be able to visualize the scenery. If you want to propose that China adopt a legal drinking age, you should make it clear to the People’s Congress why such a law is necessary, what it should be, how to implement such a law, and so forth. Last but not least, good writing expresses ideas clearly.(9) Good writing reflects good thinking, and good thinking needs to be put in precise, concise, and lucid prose. An important task for revision is to trim all the deadwood, pruning all the redundancies, wordiness, and confusing and misleading ambiguities.(10) For non-native speakers, to express yourself clearly often involves making your writing more idiomatic, reducing the level of negative interference of your native language and to bring your writing closer to English-speaking readers. Only when you can write clearly can you begin to think of developing a distinctive style. What kind of style you should develop or use depends on your temperament, your needs, and such controlling factors as the subject you are writing about, the audience you are writing to, and the purpose you want to achieve. One style may be appropriate for certain occasions but totally inappropriate for others. You would feel totally out of place if you go to a casual gathering of old friends dressed in expensive suit and tie, unless you want to appear snobbish and showy. How about going to a concert performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra in the elegant Grand Capital Arts Center in loosely fit T-shirt and jeans? So far, we have discussed five characteristics of good writing. In later lectures, you will learn in greater detail about how to write to different audiences to achieve specific purposes in clear and effective styles.Good WritingEducators in English-speaking countries have developed a set of basic characteristics of good English writing—unity, (1)______, emphasis, development and clarity. Here, a different set of concepts are introduced: 1. Good writing is good thinking:—It should be (2)______.having something insightfulto say about the topic. —It is not simply (3)______.—It may1) enlighten you or(4)______the subject; 2) make you feel something similar; 3) make you feel exactly(5)______.2. Good writing Involves thoughtful (6)______:—It is the result of 99% of hard work and 1 % ofinspiration.3. Good writing is directed toward an audience; —The audience determines1) diction and sentence structure; 2) the sentence length and patterns; 3) the overall (7)______; 4) details that should be included.4. Good writing achieves a clear (8)______:5. Good writing expresses ideas clearly:—It reflects good thinking, which should be put into precise, (9) ______, and lucid articles.—For non-native speakers of English, clear expre—ssion involves being (10)______.1.正确答案:coherence解析:根据句(1)可知,学者们认为一篇好的写作应具备的一系列基本特征是:unity,coherence,emphasis,development and clarity,故答案为coherence。

Reading Comprehension of the Four Bases in Essay Writing. (20%)Directions: There are two passages in this section. Each one is followed by some questions concerning the four elements in essay writing. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Decide on the BEST choice and BLACKEN the corresponding letter on the ANSWER SHEET.Passage1A Nigh of Violence[Paragraph1]According to my history instructor, Adolf Hilter once said that he wanted to sign up “brutal youths” to help him achieve his goals. If Hilter were still alive, he wouldn’t have any trouble recruiting the brutal youths he wanted; he could get them right here in the United States. I know, because I was one of them. As a teenager, I ran with a gang. And it took a frightening incident for me to see how violent I had become.[Paragraph2]The incident was planned one Thursday night when I was out with my friends. I was still going to school once in a while, but most of my friends weren’t. We spent our days on the streets, talking, showing off, sometimes shoplifting a little or shaking people down for a few dollars. My friends and I were close, maybe because life hadn’t been very good to any of us. On this night, we were drinking wine and vodka on the corner. For some reason, we all felt tense and restless. One of us came up with the idea of robbing one of the old people who lived in the high-rise close by. We could just knock him or her over, grab the money, and party with it.[Paragraph3](1)The robbery did not go as planned. (2)After about an hour, and after more wine and vodka, we spotted an old man. (3)He came out of the glass door of the building and started up the street. (4)Pine Street had a lot of antique stores as well as apartment buildings.(5)Stuffing our bottles in our jacket pockets, we closed in behind him.(6)Suddenly, the old man whipped out a homemade wooden club from under his jacket and began swinging. (7)The club thudded loudly against Victor’s shoulder, making him yelp with pain. (8)When we heard that, we went crazy. (9)We smashed our bottles over the old man’s head. (10)Not content with that, Victor kicked him savagely, knocking him to the ground.(11)As we ran, I kept seeing him sprawled on the ground, blood from our beating trickling into his eyes. (12)Victor, the biggest of us, had said,“We want your money, old man. Hand it over.”[Paragraph4]Later, at home, I had a strong reaction to the incident. My head would not stop pounding, and I threw up. I wasn’t afraid of getting caught; in fact, we never did get caught. I just knew I had gone over some kind of line. I didn’t know if I could step back, now that I had gone so far. But I knew I had to. I had seen plenty of people in my neighborhood turn into the kind of people who hated their lives, people who didn’t care about anything, people who would up penned in jail or ruled b drugs.I didn’t want to become one of them.[Paragraph5](1)That night, I realize now, I decided not to become one of Jilter’s “brutal youths.” (2)I’m proud of myself for that, even though life didn’t get any easier and no one came along to pin a medal on me. (3)I just decided, quietly, to step off the path I was on. (4)I hope my parents and I will get along better now, too. (5)Maybe the old man’s pain, in some terrible way, had a purpose.QUESTION1. What sentence in paragraph 3 of “A Night of Violence” should be omitted in the interest of paragraph unity?A. Sentence 2B. Sentence 4C. Sentence 6D. Sentence 82. What sentence in the final paragraph of “A Night of Violence”makes the mistake of introducing a new topic and so should be eliminated?A. Sentence 1B. Sentence 2C. Sentence 3D. Sentence 43. What are the three time transitions used in the third paragraph of “A Night of Violence”?○1after ○2when ○3as ○4suddenly ○5 as well asA. ○1, ○2 and ○3B. ○2, ○3 and ○4C. ○3, ○4 and ○5D. ○1, ○3 and ○55 What method of introduction forms the first paragraph of “A Night of Violence”? Circle the appropriate letter.A. AnecdotesB. QuestionsC. Broad, general statement narrowing to a thesis.D. that is the opposite of the one to be developedPassage 2Once Over Lightly: Local TV News[Paragraph1]Are local television newscasts a reliable source of news?Do they provide in-depth coverage and analysis of important local issues? Unfortunately, all too often they do not. While local TV newscasts can provide a valuable community resource, too often programs provide mere entertainment at the expanse of solid news. In their battle for high ratings, local programs emphasize news personalities at the expanse of stories. Visual appeal has a higher priority than actual news. And stories and reports are too brief and shallow.[Paragraph2](1)Local TV newscasters are as much the subject of the news as are the stories they present. (2)Nowhere is this more obvious than in weather reports. (3)Weatherpersons spend valuable news time joking, drawing cartoons, chatting about weather fronts as “good guys”and “bad guys,” and dispensing weather trivia such as statistics about relative humidity and record highs and lows fro the date. (4)Reporters, too, draw attention to themselves. Rather than just getting the story, the reporters are shown jumping into or getting out of helicopters to get the story.(5)When reporters interview crime victims or the residents of poor neighborhoods, the camera angle typically includes them and their reaction as well as their subjects. (6)When they report on a storm, they stand outside in the storm, their styled hair blowing, so we can admire how they “brave the elements.”(7)Then there are the anchorpersons, who are chosen as much for their looks as their skills. (8)They too dilute the news by putting their personalities at center stage.[Paragraph3]Often the selection of stories and the way they are presented are based on visual impact rather than news value. If a story is not accompanied by an interesting film clip, it is not likely to be shown on the local news. The result is an overemphasis on fires and car crashes and little attention to such important issues as the economy. A tractor-trailer spill on the highway slightly injuries one person and inconveniences motorists for only an hour. But because it providesdramatic pictures---the big truck on its side, its load spilled, emergency personnel running around, lots of flashing on its side, its load spilled, emergency personnel running around, lots of flashing lights---it is given greater emphasis in the local newscast than a rise in local taxes, which has far more lasting effect on the viewer. “If it bleeds, it leads” is the unofficial motto of many local news programs. A story that includes pictures of death and destruction, no matter how meaningless, is preferable on the local news to a solid, important story without flashy visuals. The mania for visuals is so strong that local news programs will even slap irrelevant visuals onto an otherwise strong story. A recent story on falling oil prices, for example, was accompanied by footage of a working oil well that drew attention away from the important economic information in the report.[Paragraph4](1)On the average, about half a minute is devoted to a story. (2)Clearly, stories that take less than half a minute are superficial. (3)Even the longest stories that take up to several minutes, are not accompanied by meaningful analysis. (4)Instead, the camera jumps from one location to another, and the newscaster simplifies and trivializes the issues. (5)For instance, one recent “in-depth” story about the homeless consisted of a glamorous reporter talking to a homeless person and asking him what should be done about the problem. (6)The poor man was in no condition to respond intelligently. (7)The story then cut to an interview with a city bureaucrat who mechanically rambled on about the need for more government funding. (8)Is raising taxes the answer to every social problem? (9)There were also shots of homeless people sleeping in doorways and on top of heating vents, and there were interviews with people in the street, all of whom said that something should be done about the terrible problem of homelessness. (10)There was in all of this, no real exploration of the issue of the week. (11)After the week’s coveragewas over, the topic was not mentioned again.[Paragraph5]Because of the emphasis on newscaster’s personalities and on the visual impact of stories and the short time span for stories, local news shows provide little more than diversion. What viewers need instead is we need to deal with complex issues and learn uncomfortable truths that will help us become more responsible consumers and citizens.QUESTIONS1.
