She completed those classes online as she was traveling for church events and leadership meetings. She doesn’t stop there, though. The teen plans to focus on aviation psychology(航空心理学)for her further study,a decision inspired by her father who is a pilot. She grew up around airplanes and took fights all the time. Her goal is to use it to determine whether pilots are dealing with problems that could have deadly results once the plane takes off—a topic that has been in the news lately. For her,it’s a mix of two of her interests. In her free time,Thessalonika enjoys playing tennis, swimming and being active in her youth group at church. She also has three self-published books, which are on her site.Jump the Education Barrier is written to help students finish college, and in the future aims to help business owners with trends. Her third book The Genius Race, has a wider appeal. It is designed to help people to be geniuses in various areas of life.28.Which of the following is TRUE about Thessalonika?A.When she was6years old,she started homeschooling.B.She gained her master’s degree at the age of11.C.She majored in science and technology.D.In2013she got her bachelor’s degree through completing courses online.29.What is her next plan according to the passage?A.Major in aviation psychology.B.Deliver inspiring speeches for church events and leadership meetings.C.Be active in her youth group at church.D.Write another book to help people to be geniuses.30.Why does she write the book Jump the Education Barrier?A.It aims to help people to be geniuses.B.It is intended to give students a hand to complete college.C.It is designed to arouse people’s awareness of psychology.D.The author hopes to share her own experience with others.31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.The Story of ThessalonikaB.To be a GeniusC.Three Published BooksD.HomeschoolingDCrossing your legs is an extremely common habit;most people don’t even notice that they’re doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other,it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason for this is that the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart and that crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but repeated,drawn-out increases in blood pressure can cause long-term health issues. So, planning to sit for a long period of time?Don’t keep your legs crossed.“Crossing your legs at the knee can also cause pressure on the major nerve in your leg that passes just below your knee and along the outside of your leg.”explains Richard Graves,a medical expert. This pressure can cause numbness and temporary paralysis(麻痹)of some of the muscles in your foot and leg, preventing you from being able to raise your ankle—what we know as that“pins and needles”sensation. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.32.What can we learn about crossing one’s legs?A.It is a very bad social habit.B.It is usually practiced deliberately.C.It can do harm to people’s health.D.It can make others feel uncomfortable.33.According to the study, sitting with your legs crossed can_________.A.affect your blood pressureB.resist gravity effectivelyC.lead to heart attacks easilyD.improve the function of legs34.In the third paragraph“pins and needles”probably means“_________”.A.slight sharp painsB.being a little nervousC.serious muscle injuriesD.being highly flexible35.What is the main purpose of the text?A.To compare common habits.B.To give readers some advice.C.To evaluate effects of an experiment.D.To introduce research methods.第二节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

第I 卷〔选择题〕一、阅读理解AAlbert Hofmann was a Swiss scientist who was fascinated by nature. This led him to a career in chemistry in which he sought answers to his uncertainties. He worked at Sandoz Laboratories where he nurtured his research work, and there he made a lot of success by working with various plants and changing them into something useful. He became famous when he became the first person to produce lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD)( 迷幻药). In addition, he was also the first person to taste it and learn about its hallucinogenic(引起幻觉的)effects. He was deeply connected to nature and argued that LSD, besides being useful for psychiatry (精神病学), could also be used to promote awareness of mankind’s place in nature. However, he was disappointed that his discovery was being carelessly used as a drug for entertainment. Because of his discovery, LSD fans have fondly called him “the Father of LSD 〞. Besides carrying out his scientific experiments, he also authored numerous books and more than 100 scientific articles. In 2007, he featured in a list of the 100 greatest living geniuses, published by The Telegraph Newspaper .Childhood & Early lifeAlbert Hofmann was born in Baden, Switzerland, on January 11, 1906. He was the eldest of four children. His father was a poor toolmaker in a factory and they lived in a rented apartment. He spent much of his childhood outdoors and grew up with a deep connection with nature. He had mind-blowing experiences in childhood. It was a sce ne that had been repeated many times in the theatre’s 75-year history. This time, however, the clean-up was a little different. As one group of workers carried out the rubbish, another group began removing seats and other theatre equipment in preparation f or the building’s end.The film classic The Last Picture Show was the last movie shown in the old theatre. Though the movie is 30 years old, most of the 250 seats were filled with teary-eyed audience wanting to say goodbye to the old building. Theatre owner Ed Bradford said he chose the movie because it seemed appropriate. The movie is set in a small town where the only movie theatre is preparing to close down.Bradford said that large modern theatres in the city made it impossible for the Plaza to compete. He added that the theatre’s location (位置) was also a reason. “This used to be the centre of town, 〞he said. “Now the area is mostly office buildings and warehouses.〞Last week some city officials suggested the city might be interested in turning the old theatre into a museum and public meeting place. However, these plans were abandoned because of financial problems. Bradford sold the building and land to a local development firm, which plans to build a shopping complex on the land where the theatre is located. The theatre audience said goodbye as Bradford locked the doors for the last time. After 75 years the Plaza Theatre has shown its last movie. The theatre will be missed.8.In what way was yesterday’s clean-up at the Plaza special?A. It signaled the close-down of the theatre.B. Researchers have used the findings to predict everything from the likelihood that a couple will divorce to the chances of a work team having high customer satisfaction and productivity levels.More recent research helps explain why these brief exchanges matter So much. When you experience negative emotions as a result of criticism or rejection, for example, your body produces higher levels of the stress hormone, which shuts down much of your thinking and activates(激活) conflict and defense mechanisms (机制). You assume situations as being worse than they actually are. When you experience a positive interaction, it activates a very different response. Positive exchanges increase your body’s production of oxytocin, a feel-good hormone that increases your ability to communicate with, cooperate with and trust others. But the effects of a positive occurrence are less dramatic and lasting than they are for a negative one. We need at least three to five positive interactions to outweigh( 比……更重要) every one negative exchange. Bad moments simply outweigh good ones. Whether you’re having a conversation, keep this simple short cut in mind: At least 80 percent of your conversation should be focused on what’s going right.Workplaces, for example, often see this. During performance reviews, managers routinely spend 80 percent of their time on weaknesses and “areas for improvem ent〞. They spend roughly 20 percent of thetime on strengths and positive aspects. Any time you have discussions with a person or group, spend the vast majority of the time talking about what is working, and use the remaining time to address weaknesses. 12.Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined part “tune out〞in Paragraph 1?A. stop listeningB. change one’s mindC. lose temperD. be at a loss13.What will happen if you experience negative emotions?A. Much of your thinking will be prevented.B. You’ll begin to look for the bright side of life.C. You will feel an urge to improve and become better.D. You’ll be motivated to resolve conflicts with people.14.What can we infer from Paragraph 4?A. We need a positive feeling to beat one negative feeling.B. Negative feelings can sometimes promote our productivity.C. Our conversation should center on what needs improvement.D. The effect of negative feelings lasts longer than that of positive ones.15.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. Ways to prevent negative thoughts.B. Positive interactions make the difference.C. Why negative thinking is unnecessary.D. How to promote workplace productivity.二、七选五How to stop procrastinating (拖延)You know the people who walk confidently into an algebra test without trying to burn last-minute formulas(公式) into their brains? 16.And it’s easier than you think. The chang es are to help users understand a mix of terms, some dating b ack many centuries. The additions include words such as “bre ncheese”,“deathshildy” and “hip-pop”.The new entries are part of the company’s update to , its searchable online dictionary for paid members. The OED makes changes to the website four times each year. But the l atest print version has been in process since the year 2000, a nd may not be ready for 10 more years. That information comes from Katherine Connor Martin, who heads the company’s d ictionary operations in the United States.Usually, the OED watches usage of a word for at least 10 yea rs before deciding whether to add a new entry, new definition or word related to an existing entry, she said. This general rul e, however, is sometimes not followed. That is what happene d with “tweet”, a word that the OED added far before the 10-year mark. Other times, the company adds words that are ver y old, but were not included in the dictionary in the past.“It’s funny because we talk about new words, but many of the words we add are already obsolete. It’s just that they were ne ver in the dictionary before,” Martin told the Associated Press. That is the reality, she said, of a historical dictionary trying to put more than 1,000 years of English into books that already have over 855,000 entries. So, you get “brencheese”, a rarely used term for when bread and cheese are eaten together. Th e word dates back to the year 1665. The word “deathshildy” is from Old English. It means someone who is guilty of a seriou s crime and condemned to death. The website defines the term “hip-pop” for music that combines parts of hip-hop and popular music. The OED discovered the term “hip-hip pop” was used in a 1985 story from a Pennsylvania newspaper. It noted that the term “hip-pop” appeared in a 1991 U. S. newspaper report about the ra p artist M.C.Hammer.The website has added several other terms related to modern culture. They include three popular terms: “binge-watching”,“spoiler alert” and “microaggression”.Here are a few other new entries if you long to read on. 32.What has the OED done recently?A.It has made changes to its words’ explanations.B.It has sorted out some words which are out of date.C.It has helped users to have more convenient use of the O ED.D.It has taken in more words and new meanings of some w ords.33.The underlined word “obsolete” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to __________.A.deserted B.updatedC.changed D.explained34.What will the paragraph following the passage most prob ably be about?A.The influence cultures have on the words in the OED.B.The difficulties the OED has in choosing the words.
