A cup of cocoa before going to bed or a Mars bar on the bus – the British are obsessed with it. The average Briton eats 10kg of chocolate a year. Women eat far more chocolate than men, an amazing 67% of total chocolate consumption. And the most popular snack is KitKat – fifty are eaten every second in the UK.Chocoholics are people with a chocolate obsession. But are they addicts? Not according to recent research. This shows that chocolate is not as addictive as coffee – in fact, there is no proof that chocolate creates addiction at all. And it’s a lot better for you than we thought. Some scientists say that it releases the same chemicals that your body produces when you are in love. Now that can’t be a bad thing! Some more good news – it doesn’t raise your cholesterol level or give you acne,as people believe, and it can even be good for your teeth! It does, however, contain caffeine and is bad if you get headaches. So the least sensible time to eat it is at night. The British love chocolate but they are not as obsessed as the Swiss. Lucy loves new technology. She owns a games console, an MP3 player, and a mobile phone with a built-in digital camera. David is a teacher. Lucy is his student.Like Lucy, many children grow up using computers almost every day and often know more about technology than adults. Educator Marc Prensky calls children like Lucy “digital natives”. Digital natives can quickly learn how to use new gadgets and new software, while non-digital natives spend a lot of time reading manuals and worrying about computer viruses. In fact, many parents try to save time by asking their children to teach them how to use new technology! The divide between digital natives and non-digital natives can cause problems at school because students and teachers grow up with very different ideas about technology. Many teachers think that playing computer games is a waste of time and that technology has made children unable to concentrate. However, many students think their classes are slow and boring, and want to use computers to study.Prensky believes that digital natives have learned a lot from technology, but that they learn things in a different way. For example, reading a website is different from reading a book, so digital natives are good at finding the information they need and choosing what they want to read. So perhaps teachers need to change the way they teach and use more technology in class – because the number of digital natives will keep increasing!1 David is a digital native.2 Marc Prensky is interested in teaching with technology.3 Digital natives are comfortable using laptops and flash drives.4 Many teachers think computer games are only for having fun or killing time.5 People read books and websites in the same way.Key: FTTTF7.From: U10L2 P153SpanglishIn which city can you read signs like “Aparca your car aquí” or “Cuidado con los pickpockets”? This reflects the enormous increase in the Hispanic population in the States. There are now 42 million Hispanics resident in the USA, representing 15% of the total population. There is a new language, SPANGLISH – a strange mixture of Spanish and English –which is invading the city. The New York Times recently said that it had become the city’s third official language. Its use is colloquial and often limited to short sentences and signs. Many New Yorkers now wear socketines on their feet, drop something on the carpeta, shop for grocerias and have cornfley(“cornflakes”) for breakfast.Norma Rodríguez, a 45-year-old Cuban living in Washington Heights, says it forms a part of her life now: “Sometimes, you don’t realize that you’re mixing the two languages. You just hear them both all the time and find that you’re inventing new words.” Other people, however, are fighting against this new street language. Businessman Juan Cortés sees it as a sign that the Spanish language is being destroyed. “It’s difficult, but I try not to speak it – it feels vulgar to me.”Meanwhile, a surprising number of academics have spoken in favour of Spanglish. Jos é María Ruiz, from NY State University, even runs courses in Spanglish and has written a dictionary. “It is a dialogue between two languages and cultures. We have to accept that languages change and evolve. The only languages that never change are dead ones.”1 The Spanish-speaking population has grown very fast recently.2 More people are interested in studying Spanish than before.3 Spanglish is mainly used in formal contexts.4 Norma Rodríguez doesn’t notice when she is speaking Spanglish.5 Juan Cortés doesn’t speak Spanglish because he feels stupid when he tries.Key: TTFTF(2)阅读选择题(7篇)Reading: Read the article and choose the best choice for each question.1.From: U1L2 P10London:Melting Pot of CulturesDid you know that London is one of the most multicultural cities in the world? Lucy loves new technology. She owns a games console, an MP3 player, and a mobile phone with a built-in digital camera. David is a teacher. Lucy is his student.Like Lucy, many children grow up using computers almost every day and often know more about technology than adults. Educator Marc Prensky calls children like Lucy “digital natives”. Digital natives can quickly learn how to use new gadgets and new software, while non-digital natives spend a lot of timereading manuals and worrying about computer viruses. So perhaps teachers need to change the way they teach and use more technology in class – because the number of digital natives will keep increasing!1 David is a digital native.2 Marc Prensky is interested in teaching with technology.3 Digital natives are comfortable using laptops and flash drives.4 Many teachers think computer games are only for having fun or killing time.5 People read books and websites in the same way.Key: FTTTF7.From: U10L2 P153SpanglishIn which city can you read signs like “Aparca your car aquí” or “Cuidado con los pickpockets” Travelguide investigates.1.2 million Hispanics live in the Big Apple and one in five New Yorkers speaks Spanish at home. There are now 42 million Hispanics resident in the USA, representing 15% of the total population. There is a new language, SPANGLISH – a strange mixture of Spanish and English – which is invading the city. The New York Times recently said that it had become the city’s thir dofficial language. You just hear them both all the time and find that you’re inventing new words.” Other people, howe ver, are fighting against this new street language. Businessman Juan Cortés sees it as a sign that the Spanish language is being destroyed. “It’s difficult, but I try not to speak it –it feels vulgar to me.”Meanwhile, a surprising number of academics have spoken in favour of Spanglish. José María Ruiz, from NY State University, even runs courses in Spanglish and has written a dictionary. “It is a dialogue between two languages and cultures. We have to accept that languages change and evolve. The only languages that never change are dead ones.”1 The Spanish-speaking population has grown very fast recently.2 More people are interested in studying Spanish than before.3 Spanglish is mainly used in formal contexts.4 Norma Rodríguez doesn’t notice when she i s speaking Spanglish.5 Juan Cortés doesn’t speak Spanglish because he feels stupid when he tries.Key: TTFTF。

This system of learned behavior patterns characteristic of the members of a given society is constantly shaped by a set of dynamic variables (动态的变量): language, religion, values and attitudes, manners and customs, aesthetics(美学), technology, education, and social institutions. To cope with this system, an international manager needs both factual and interpretive (解释的) knowledge of culture. To some extent, the factual knowledge can be learned; its interpretation comes only through experience. The most complicated problems in dealing with the cultural environment stem from the fact that one cannot learn culture—one has to live it. Two schools of thought exist in the business world on how to deal with cultural diversity. One is that business is business the world around, following the model of Pepsi and McDonald’s. In some cases, globalization is a fact of life; however, cultural differences are still far from converging. The other school proposes that companies must tailor business approaches to individual cultures. Setting up policies and procedures in each country has been compared to an organ transplant (移植); the critical question centers around acceptance or rejection. The major challenge to the international manager is to make sure that rejection is not a result of cultural myopia (近视) or even blindness.Fortune examined the international performance of a dozen large companies that earn 20 percent or more of their revenue overseas. The internationally successful companies all share an important quality: patience. They have not rushed into situations but rather built their operations carefully by following the most basic business principles. These principles are to know youradversary (对手), know your audience, and know your customer.1. According to the passage, which of the following is true?A. The auspicious figure connotes eternity (不朽), and thus longevity in our culture. The date’s association with old age became closer and clearer in 1989, when it was designated Senior Citizens’ Day.So yesterday at the Confucian Temple in Beijing, 50 three-generation families were convened to perform traditional rites symbolizing respect for family elders.Children and grandchildren, dressed in traditional costumes, bowed before their parents, or grandparents, in humble reverence, and offered them symbols of longevity. Confucius, if he were there and looked at the crowd from Heaven, must have heaved a sigh of relief. After so manyyears of disregard and denial of the tradition, his descendants are finally trying to live up to their country’s proud label as a “land of courtesy and propriety”.For many of us, especially those who live and work away from home and parents, the Double Ninth Festival is an occasion to make up for our neglect of filial (孝顺的) duties at other times. And the cost can be as low as an unexpected bouquet, or a phone call. That is family. There is nothing wrong on the government’s part to promote awareness of our traditional virtues like respect for the aged. But as the national population structure evolves, taking care of senior citizens is no longer just a family matter. The number of people above 60 has reached 149 million nationwide. In Shanghai, for instance, this age group accounts for more than 20 percent of the local population. While various recent surveys reported reluctance by the elders to spend life’s last years in nursing homes, almost all those with decent facilities and services see overwhelming demand. One of them in Beijing claimed it would take 20 years from now to accommodate all current requests. From that, the government sees challenges, and businesses see opportunities. We hate hearing government officials say tight budget prevents them from building more nursing homes to meet the need. Foot-dragging (迟疑) will only aggravate the pains once aging evolves into a full-blown crisis. We can scarcely imagine the nationwide scenario (情景). It is unrealistic to expect the government to single-handedly handle all the pressures. But there is no excuse for authorities to merely stand aside. Lack of standards, like in many other service sectors, is a main reason why many elders would rather stand the loneliness at their empty nests than go to nursing homes.A responsible government can do a lot in providing comfortable yet affordable nursing homes, while improving care and services in both urban and rural communities. It is the duty of the government to facilitate policies and services to enable the elderly to enjoy their twilight years with little worries about wherever they choose to live.6.What are children supposed to do on Senior Citizens’ Day?A) Be dressed in traditional costumes.B) Bow before their parents.C) Offer their parents symbols of longevity.D) All of the above.7.For whom is the Double Ninth Festival an occasion to make up for what they should have done at other times?A) Teenagers.B) People living and working away from home and parents.C) People with children.D) Elderly people.8.It can be learned from the passage that ______.A) i t’s government’s duty to promote awareness of our traditional virtuesB) taking care of senior citizens is just a family matterC) the number of people above 60 in Shanghai accounts for more than 40 percent of the localpopulationD) most elders don’t like to spend their last years in nursing homes9.According to government officials, what might be the main reason for the shortage of nursing space?A) Disapproval from government.B) Disapproval from the relatives of the elders.C) Lack of standards.D) Tight budget.10.The main purpose of the passage is to ______.A) criticize government officialsB) promote national awareness of respect for and care of the agedC) inform readers with the culture of Senior Citizens’ DayD) criticize the young people for their neglect of taking care of their parents6-10 DBDDBPassage 3Interpersonal conflicts are everywhere. Couples disagree about what to eat, whether to go to the mall, relationships with children, etc. Students and teachers have conflicts over grades. We have road rage on suburban highways, disputes between neighbors, and arguments between workers and bosses. The importance of interpersonal conflict lies in how we handle it. Some helpful terms that describe our options when we encounter conflicts are “flight, fight, or unite.”Flight is what scholars call the exit option. Sometimes you can just walk away. If someone acts aggressively toward you on the highway, you can avoid them. Fighting is very common. Domestic abuse, most violent crimes, and schoolyard fights are usually an outgrowth of interpersonal conflict. A third option is to unite to solve differences cooperatively. Couples can talk through differences of opinion. Teachers and students can settle almost every grade complaint in a way that not only satisfies them but also makes them better students or teachers. However, if the interpersonal conflict is intense, uniting requires help from a third party―someone who helps the two parties in dispute find common interests that can serve as the basis for an agreement. For example, mediators are used on a routine basis in American businesses, and many families see counselors.Individuals can have a big impact on the results of interpersonal conflicts. Out of the three options, “flight, fight, and unite”, the first two are almost alwa ys counterproductive. In reality, violence used in response to violence produces even more violence in return. Flight does not provide a better option either. Flight is not necessarily physically running from a conflict. Rather, we tend to delay dealing with it, hoping that somehow it will just go away. It seldom does. Therefore, individuals are responsible for solving their problems cooperatively. Conflict resolution is a growth industry, but the growing community of conflict resolution professionals still needs to become more visible so that people can learn about it and turn to it when a conflict arises. People also need to become better at resolving disputes themselves. No matter how many mediators there are, and how well they are known, they cannot come close to mediating every interpersonal conflict. People need to learn how to resolve conflicts on their own.11. According to this passage, which of the following statements is true about interpersonalconflicts?A) They occur frequently between students and teachers because of the load of assignments.B) The solution to interpersonal conflicts depends on how we cope with them.C) They cannot be completely conquered unless we stick to our own viewpoints.D) They are absolutely a matter between the two parties involved.12. All of the following are choices offered in the passage when we are confronted with conflictsEXCEPT ______.A) escaping from aggressive peopleB) yielding to the other personC) negotiating to resolve our disagreementsD) taking violent actions to oppose conflicts13. If people choose to unite in the intense conflict described in the passage, it requires ______.A) merely the two parties’ commitmentB) the involvement of law expertsC) the two parties’ common hobbiesD) so meone else’s help apart from the two parties14. Among the three choices listed in this passage, for which one does the writer have apreference?A) Flight. B) Fight. C) Unite. D) Not mentioned.15. In the last paragraph, “conflict resolution is a growth industry” probably implies that ______.A) conflict resolution companies are well on their wayB) more conflict resolution companies have sprung upC) an increasing number of professionals are engaged in conflict resolution, causing rapiddevelopmentD) conflict resolution has already become a mature industry11-15 BBDCCPassage 4When referees see red, they don’t get angry. They may actually favor the competitor in scarlet attire, a new study suggests.A recent study in the journal Nature found that athletes who wore red in combat sports out-performed their opponents wearing blue. The authors of that study suggested that the color red might give a psychological edge to the red-clad athlete, because red is a color associated with dominance and aggressiveness. They suggested that either the red attire increased those feelings in the athlete wearing them or that they intimidated his opponent by suggesting those qualities. But psychologist Hagemann and his colleagues disagreed with these conclusions, saying that the authors had left out one major component of these sports: the referees.“Referees have a very strong influence on this sort of sport,” Hagemann said.“Often, events in a sport happen too fast for a referee to accurately judge them, because the visual system simply can’t process that quickly.”Hagemann suspected that the better performance of the red-clad opponent was in reality a “subconscious bias” for the color on the part of the referees. To test this idea, the researchers showed 42 experienced tae kwon do referees video clips(剪辑)of sparring rounds of five different male competitors of similar abilities. First they wereshown the original videos, with one opponent in red gear, the other in blue; then, they were shown the same clips digitally altered so that the colors were reversed (the refs were unaware of the color switch). On the whole, competitors in red scored an average of 13 percent more points than their opponents in blue. Athletes who started out in blue were awarded more points when they later appeared in red, and those who started out in red received fewer points when in blue.Hagemann told that this finding suggests some sort of unconscious bias toward the color red on the part of the referees. This bias could stem from perceiving red as a more dominant, aggressive color, or red could simply better attract the eye, Hagemann said. The bias only seems to exist in sports such as tae kwon do where competitors are being judged at the same time and referees’ decisions are more influential on how points are decided. While he doesn’t expect the Beijing Olympics to shed the traditional red and blue protective gear for tae kwon do opponents, he does suggest that referees be given electronic aids to help in their decision making.16. The recent study in the journal Nature.A) suggested red-clad athletes might have a psychological advantage over othersB) suggested referees have a very strong influence in combat sportsC) suggested red symbolizes dominance and aggressivenessD) suggested blue-clad athletes often beat their rivals in other colors17. What’s the possible meaning of the underlined word “attire” in paragraph 1?A) Shoes. B) Sportswear. C) Spirit. D) Skin.18. According to Hagemann, _______.A) basketball team in red might outperform the team in other colorsB) tae kwon do players are encouraged to wear red gears to get better performanceC) the dominant and aggressive red can increase athletes’confidence and intimidate theircomponentsD) referees have a preference for red-clad athletes19. In which way did Hagemann test his idea?A) Through interview. B) Through experiment.C) Through investigation. D) Through analysis.20. Which of the following statement is true according to the passage?A) Even if the process of the combat sports is so quick, referees can make an accuratejudgment.B) The subconscious bias toward red lies in that it is an auspicious color in most countries.C) There would be no influence on the outcome if the referees knew in advance the color hadbeen changed in Hagemann’s research.D) Hagemann’s finding can promote fairness in combat sports.16-20 ABDBDPassage 5Upon reaching an appropriate age (usually between 18 and 21 years), children are encouraged, but not forced, to “leave the nest” and begin an independent life. After children leave home they often find social relationship and financial support outside the family. Parents do notarrange marriages for their children, nor do children usually ask permission of their parents to get married. Romantic love is most often the basis for marriage in the United States; young adults meet their future spouses (配偶) through other friends, at jobs, and in organizations and religious institutions. Although children choose their own spouses, they still hope their parents will approve of their choices. In many families, parents feel that children should make major life decisions by themselves.A parent may try to influence a child to follow a particular profession but the child is free to choose another career. Sometimes children do precisely the opposite of what their parents wish in order to assert their independence. A son may deliberately decide not to go into his father’s business because of a fear that he will lose his autonomy in his father’s workplac e. This independence from parents is not an indication that parents and children do not love each other. Strong love between parents and children is universal and this is no exception in the American family. Coexisting with such love in the American family are cultural values of self-reliance and independence.21. The writer discusses the marriage of young adults in order to show that they _____.A. enjoy the freedom of choosing their spousesB. want to win the permission of their parentsC. have a strong desire to become independentD. try to challenge the authority of their parents22. Most young adults in America would get married for the sake of ____.A. loveB. financial concernC. their parentsD. family background23. Based on the passage, it can be inferred that _____.A. American young adults are likely to follow the suit of their parentsB. most American parents never make major decisions for their childrenC. American young adults possess cultural values of independenceD. when a young adult steps into his twenties, he will leave his home permanently24. A son is unwilling to work in his father’s business mainly because he _____.A. wishes to make full use of what he has learnt in schoolB. wants to prove his independenceC. likes to do the opposite of what his parents approve ofD. tries to show his love for his parents25. The subject matter of this passage is _____.A. cultural values in the American familyB. marriage arrangementsC. young adult’s pursuit of a careerD. decision making21-25 CACBAPassage 6What is your favorite color? Do you like yellow, orange, and red? If you do, you must be an optimist, a leader, and an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement. Do you prefergrays and blues? Then you are probably quiet, shy and you would rather follow than lead. You tend to be a pessimist. At least, this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of color preference, as well as the effect that colors have on human beings. They tell us among other facts, that we do not choose our favorite color as we grow up — we are born with our preference. If you happen to love brown, you did so, as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.Color does influence o ur moods ― there is no doubt about it. A yellow room makes most people feel more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one; and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand, black is depressing. A black bridge over the Thames River, near London, used to be the scene of more suicides than any other bridge in the area —until it was repainted green. The number of suicide attempts immediately fell sharply; perhaps it would have fallen even more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue.Light and bright colors make people not only happier but also more active. It is an established fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or gray.26. The author regards the psychologists’ findings as _____.A. groundlessB. doubtfulC. reasonableD. unusual27. According to the psychologists, a person’s color preference _____.A. is formed as he grows upB. is acquired through experienceC. is decided by his surroundingsD. is possessed from birth28. It can be concluded from the passage that bright color lovers tend to be _____.A. quietB. activeC. depressiveD. pessimistic29. The example of the bridge is used to illustrate that _____.A. people tend to kill themselves by jumping from bridgesB. color can affect people’s moods to a great degreeC. the bridge should have been repainted earlierD. certain color can kill people sometimes30. The notion that machines painted orange can reduce the risk of accidents ______.A. is a well-accepted factB. remains to be provedC. is an illusion of workersD. is a good wish of scientists26-30 CDBBAPassage 7It’s very necessary for Canada to set up effective transportat ion system because of its enormous size with its sparsely populated distribution. It is also very difficult to make transportation construction on the surface of the country due to its harsh long winter and its mountainous terrain. It’s really amazing for this country to set up a transcontinental railroad since last century. Until 1990, the route length was more than 86,880 kilometers. Most of the country’s freight is transported by Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway. But nowadays fewer and fewer people travel by train.Water transportation was very important before railway construction. Although passenger travel by water is less important than before, waterways remain important for cargo transporting. Waterways include lakes, rivers and sea coastlines. One of the most significant water transportation systems is St. Lawrence Seaway from the Atlantic Ocean to the west of Lake Superior.Because of the increasing number of automobiles, Canada’s road transportation develops very quickly. In 1991, road length has been more than 849,400 kilometers. Road system is becoming more and more important. Trucks carry nearly half of the total freight transported in Canada. With the development of transportation, airplanes became another kind of necessary vehicles since airplanes could be the only access to some areas of the far northern region. Canadian transportation system develops very quickly with the increasingly advanced science and technology. The aim of the transportation is to use substitute fuels and to produce more efficient transportation facilities.31. Despite its ______, Canada now boasts to have built a transcontinental railroad.A. sparsely populated areasB. abundant natural resourcesC. large acres of desertD. harsh long winter32. Nowadays, the Canadian railway is mainly used to _______.A. transport freightB. carry passengersC. carry touristsD. transport soldiers33. Nearly 50% of the total freight transported in Canada is accomplished by ______.A. trainsB. carsC. trucksD. ships34. Airplanes are important in transportation in Canada _______.A. because they can fly very highB. because they can carry larger freight to the destination within shorter timeC. because they are the newest form of transportD. because they can go to some areas that cannot be reached by other transports35. The passage is mainly about _______.A. the history of Canadian transportationB. the different forms of transport in CanadaC. the condition of transportation in CanadaD. the advancement of Canadian transportation31-35DACDCPassage 8Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his goal is to find it and buy it; the price is a less important thing. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock, the salesman quickly produces it, and the business of trying it on can be done at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any talk and to everyone’s satisfaction. For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop does not have what he wants, or does not have exactly what he wants. In that case the salesman, as the name suggests, tries to sell the customer something else---he offers the nearest he can to the article required. No good salesmanbrings out such a substitute in a rough manner; he does so with skill and politeness: “I know this jacket is not the style you want, sir, but would you like to try it for size? It happens to be the color you mentioned.” Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual response is: “This is the right color and may be the right size, but I should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on.”Now how does a woman go about buying clothes? In almost every respect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only “having a look round”. She is always open to persuasion; indeed she sets great store by what the saleswoman tells her, even by what other persons tell her. She will try on any number of things. The most important thing in her mind is the thought of finding something that everyone thinks suits her. Contrary to a lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always searching for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going from one rail (挂衣架) to another, to and fro, often retracing (折返) her steps, before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. It is a tiring process, but an enjoyable one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.36. The passage tells us that when a man is buying clothes, __________.A) he buys cheap things, regardless of qualityB) he chooses something that others recommendC) he does not mind the price for the right thingsD) he buys good quality things, so long as they are not too dear37. What do men care about when they buy new clothes?A) They care more about the size than the color.B) They like their clothes to be in style.C) They make sure if the shop has just what they want.D) They don’t care much about what to buy.38. If a man can not find exactly what he wants, __________.A) he would buy something similar to what he wantsB) he usually does not buy anythingC) he follows the salesman’s suggestionsD) he would search from rail to rail39. What does the passage tell us about women shoppers for clothes?A) They welcome suggestions from anyone.B) They listen to advice but never take it.C) Women often buy things that they need most.D) Women rarely consider the price of the things they buy.40. They are retired, so they don't work anymore. My grandfather is 68 and my grandmother is 67, but they are not too old to be active. They exercise by playing golf and they go out for meals and to the theater. Sometimes they take me out, too. We have a good time. They also go on great holidays. Last year, they went to China and walked along the Great Wall!Sometimes, my grandparents like to criticize me. They think that children today have an easy life. Life was very different when they were young and there are many things about my life that they do not understand. They tell me, over and over, how they had to start work at 16. They know that I will go on to university and won't be getting a job until I am 22! They also think that I have too many possessions, such as mobile phones, computers and PSPs. When they were young, they did not have anything like that. What they do not realize is that they cannot compare children at present time. They had the same kinds of things as the rest of people of their age, so do I. It would be very strange if I only had the possessions that they had when they were my age.6.My grandparents sometimes criticize me. Very often, Americans are in a hurry and may greet you with a single word ' Hi ' , indeed; this is a greeting you will hear again and again during your stay in the United States. It is used by everyone, regardless of rank and occupation. However, those who are accustomed to longer greetings may require a little more time before they feel comfortable with American simple talk. Our planet has become smaller. It’s now a “global village” where countries are only seconds away by fax or phone or satellite link. And, of course, our ability to benefit from this high-tech communications equipment is greatly enhanced by foreign language skills.Deeply involved with this new technology is a breed of modern businesspeople who have a growing respect for the economic value of doing business abroad. In modern markets, success overseas often helps support domestic business efforts.Overseas assignments are becoming increasingly important to advancement within executive ranks. The executive stationed in another country no longer need fear being “out of sight and out of mind.” He or she can be sure that the overseas effort i s central to the company’s plan for success, and that promotions often follow or accompany an assignment abroad. If an employee can succeed in a difficult assignment overseas, superiors will have greater confidence in his or her ability to cope back in the U.S. where cross-cultural consideration and foreign language issues are becoming more and more prevalent (普遍的).Thanks to a variety of relatively inexpensive communications devices with business applications, even small businesses in the U.S. are able to get into international markets.English is still the international language of business. A second language isn’t generally required to get a job in business, but having language s kills gives a candidate the edge when other qualifications appear to be equal. The employee posted abroad who speaks the country’s principal language has an opportunity to fast-forward certain negations, and can have the cultural insight to know when it is better to move more slowly. Millions of individuals became engaged in a variety of aerobic activities, and literally thousands of health spas developed around the country to capitalize (获利) on this emerging interest in fitness, particularly aerobic dancing for females. A number of fitness spas existed prior to this aerobic fitness movement, even a national chain with spas in most major cities. However, their focus was not on aerobics, but rather on weight-training programs designed to develop muscular mass, strength, and endurance in their primarily male enthusiasts. These fitness spas did not seem to benefit financially from the aerobic fitness movement to better health, since medical opinion suggested that weight-training programs offered few, if any, health benefits. In recent years, however, weight training has again become increasingly popular for males and for females. Many current programs focus not only on developing muscular strength and endurance but on aerobic fitness as well.Historically, most physical-fitness tests have usually included measures of muscular strength and endurance, not for health-related reasons, but primarily because such fitness components have been related to performance in athletics. However, in recent years, evidence has shown that training programs designed primarily to improve muscular strength and endurance might also offer some health benefits as well. The American College of Sports Medicine now recommends that weight training be part of a total fitness program for healthy Americans. Increased participation in such training is one of the specific physical activity and fitness objectives of Healthy People 2000: National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives.1. Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by 5 questions. For each question there are 4 choices marked A), B), C), and D). Choose the ONE answer thatbest completes each sentence.Passage 1Many students believe that math is an inherited ability—either they have the math gene, or they don’t. but a recent research shows that inborn talent might not be as important as we think. In the long run, the most successful students are often those who work the hardest, not those with the highest IQ’s. These students believe that perseverance, not an innate gift, is the key to achievement. In her book Mindset, The New Psychology of Success, Carol Dweck argues that a positive mindset is what makes some students push themselves when others give up. Students with a “fixed” mindset believe that they were born with a certain set of talents. They see challenges as a sign that they’ve reached the limit on their potential, and view challenges as a chance to learn and improve. They know that their intelligence can be built through experience and effort, and are not held back by the idea of inborn restrictions.Geoff Colvin delivers a similar message in his book, Talent Is Overrated. He demonstratesthat success is almost always the result of what he calls “deliberate practice”, a concentrated effort to improve one’s skills through focused effort. Inborn talent might make a difference when a subject is first tackled, but years later it’s the hard workers who are the most successful. Math teacher Kim Callan agrees: “It is rare for a hard-working student to fail my class.”Having the right mindset is critical to success. Children need to believe in their ability to overcome challenges through concentrated effort. If you place your child in the right math class and encourage her to work hard, there’s no limit to what she will be able to accomplish.1. What does the passage mainly discuss?A) How to help children control their states of mind.B) How to know whether a child’s talent is inborn or acquired.C) Parents are very important in their children’s learning.D) What kind of students can be successful in math.2. According to Carol Dweck’s theory, which of the following is right?A) You have a good mindset if you insist on advancing when others stop trying.B) You do not need to challenge with others if you have an inherited ability.C) You can never improve your ability through your efforts and practice.D) Your potential is limited, so you needn’t work heart and soul.3. Why does the author quote Geoff Colvin’s demonstration?A) To state that Carol Dweck’s theory is not right.B) To explain that inborn talent is very important.C) To prove whose view is better, Carol Dweck’s of Geoff Colvin’s.D) To show that one’s skills can be improved through careful and long practices.4. What is the point of the math teacher Kim Callan?A) All of the hard-working students failed in his math class.B) Very Few of the hard-working students failed in his math class.C) Some of the hard-working students failed in his math class.D) Quite a lot of the hard-working students failed in his math class.5. Inborn talent might work when ________.A) students have finished learning a subjectB) students start to learn a subjectC) it takes a long time to learn a subjectD) a subject is hard to learnPassage 2You might not normally think of frogs as being colorful, but these frogs definitely are—the dart-poison frogs of Central and South America. They have striking colors—often yellow with black stripes or deep blue with black spots.Beyond being nice to look at, these markings have a purpose. They warn predators that these frogs are poisonous. When threatened, these frogs secrete a substance through their skin that would easily kill whatever animal might try to eat them. Their bright colors communicate this, and so most animals tend not to hunt them. Now, speaking of hunting, for centuries these frogs were sought after by hunters. As you might think, the hunters didn’t want to eat the frogs, but rather, they captured them for their poison. They would add the poison to the tips of their hunting arrows—of course, nowadays most huntersuse guns. These days dart-poison frogs are of less interest to hunters than to medical researchers. Researchers believe that they can make new heart medicine from the poison, because it acts as a stimulant on the body’s nervous system. Researchers think they would use it to stimulate a weak heart. There is , however, a problem with doing research on these frogs. Those that are caught in the wild will produce their poison until they die. However, those that are born in captivity will not produce any poison at all.6. What is the passage mainly about?A) The characteristics of dart-poison frogs.B) The habitat of dart-poison fogs.C) The role of dart-poison frogs in their ecosystem.D) The various ways dart-poison frogs can camouflage themselves.7. What does the speaker imply about the frogs’ colors?A) They don’t vary within the species.B) They change when the frog is threatened .C) They attract the frogs’ mates.D) They help protect the frogs.8. What did hunters use to do with the frogs that they captured?A) They ate them.B) They used their skins to make dyes.C) They collected the frogs’ poison.D) They used them to make medicine.9. What is the problem with frogs born in captivity?A) They die shortly after birth.B) They don’t produce any poison.C) Their behavior is too unpredictable.D) They don’t develop the colorful markings.10. Why are scientists studying dart-poison frogs?A) To develop new drug therapies.B) To learn how to reverse the effects of their poison.C) To discover how to breed them successfully in captivity.D) To help repopulate the species.Passage 3The first day of university our professor introduced a new student who appears to be very different from the rest of us. That is Rose, an eighty-seven-year-old lady who always wore a big smile on her face.“Why are you in college at this age?” I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. “I always dre amed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she told me.Over the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she enjoyed being the center of attention from the other students. She was living it up!At the end of the semester, we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. She was introduced and stepped up to the stage. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her speech cards on the floor. Frustrated and a l ittle embarrassed she leaned into the speaker and simply said, “I’m sorry I’m a bit nervous. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me!”As we laughed Rose cleared her throat and began, “We do not stop laughing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don’t even know it!Have no regrets. The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we didn’t do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets. Finally, there is a huge difference between growing old and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn twenty. This is growing old, by doing nothing to your life. The idea of growing up is to always find opportunity to change.”A t the year’s end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral. After awake, he immediately played the melody on a keyboard and recorded it. At first he was concerned that he had simply recalled something he’s already heard, but when he asked around nobody recognized it.Then, lyrics were needed. Initially, the only words that cross McCartney’s mind for this dreamt melody were “Scrambled eggs, oh my baby how I love your legs”. Somehow that didn’t seem right. McCartney went on holiday to Portugal and came back with a new set of words that were to become world famous. This was 1965, Paul McCartney was 22 and the Beatles had already become an incredible phenomenon, though their fame would increase. Crowded fans, screaming girls and huge record sales were parts of these men’s daily life. But their fame was not recognized by everyone in the country, particularly with the upper class. In 1963 when the Beatles first met Marlene Dietrich, the famous German-born American actress who performed in films like The Blue Angel and Shanghai Expres s, Dietrich simply said,“What are those? They look like monkeys with all that hair. How terrible!”It was explained to Dietrich that the Beatles were a new hit and adored by the youth audience. It was also suggested to her that it would create a stir if she were to be photographed with them. Dietrich was reluctant, but allowed a message to be sent to the Fab Four that she would like meet them. The resulting photo was published all over the world: the Legend and the soon-to-become-legends. And the telecast of the show was seen by an estimated 26,000,000 viewers, which helped caused a change in Marlene Dietrich’s attitude. A reservation at an expensive restaurant was made. A beautifully wrapped present had been sitting on my dresser for a few days prior to the holiday. After a hard day at work, I hurried home. When my sweetheart arrived, I was dressed in my finest outfit and ready to go. He hugged me, just as the baby-sitter arrived. We were both excited.Unfortunately, the littlest member in our household wasn’t so happy.“Daddy, you were going to take me to buy Mamma a present,”Becky, my eight-year-old daughter said sadly.Roy looked at his watch and realized we had to leave right away. He didn’t even have a few minutes to take her to the corner shop, to buy a heart-shaped box of chocolates.“I’m sorry, I was late getting home, honey,” he said.“That’s OK,” Becky replied. “I understand.”The entire evening was bittersweet. I couldn’t help being concerned about the disappointment in Becky’s eyes. I remembered how the joyful Valentine’s Day glow had left her face, just before the door closed behind us. She wanted me to know how much she loved me.Today, I can’t remember what was wrapped in that beautiful box, which I had been given earlier, but I’ll never forget the special gift, which I received when we arrived back home.Becky was asleep on the couch, holding a box. When I kissed her cheek, she awoke, “I’ve got something for you, Mamma,” she said, as a giant smile covered her tiny face. The little box was wrapped in newspaper, as I tore the paper off and opened the box, I found the sweetest Valentine gift that I have ever received. After Roy and I left for our date, Becky got busy. She searched my fabric and sewing box, stitched the words “ I Love Ya” on a piece of red fabric, cut the fabric in the shape of a heart, stitched the two pieces together, decorated it with lace and stuffed it with cotton. It was a heart-shaped pillow, filled with love, which I’ll cherish forever. My wonderful Valentine gift has a special place in my bedroom today, some thirteen years later. It has helped me through several sleepless nights since she left home for college. Young people with little money do not want to buy cheap furniture that they may soon dislike. They prefer to wait until they have enough money to buy furniture they really like. Meanwhile, they find they can rent better quality furniture than they could afford to buy.One family, who now have a large, beautiful home of their own, liked their rented furniture so much that they decided to keep renting it instead of buying new things. A 第二部分:阅读理解Passage 1 I was 15 when I walked into McCarley Bookstore and began to look over the titles of the books on the shelves. The man behind the counter, the owner of the bookstore, asked me if I would like a job. I needed to start saving for college, so I said yes. I worked after school and during summers for minimum wages and the job helped pay for my freshman year of college. I worked at many other jobs afterwards: I made coffee in the student union during college. I made maps for the Forest Service. But selling books was one of the most satisfying. One day a woman asked me for books on cancer. She seemed fearful. I showed her everything we had and found other books we could order. She left the shop less worried andI?ve always remembered the pride I felt in having helped her. Years later, as a television reporter, I heard about a poor child who was born with his fingers of the left hand linked together. His family could not afford the corrective surgery, and the boy lived in shame, hiding his left hand in his pocket. I persuaded my boss to let me do the story on TV. After my story was broadcast, a doctor and a nurse called, offering to perform the surgery for free.I visited the boy in the recovery room after the operation. The first thing he did was hold up his repaired hand and say, “Thank you.” I was overjoyed and filled with a strong sense of reward. At McCarley Bookstore, I always felt I was working for the customers, not just for the store. Today it?s the same. NBC news pays me the salary. But I feel that I work for the viewers, helping them make sense of the world. Paper was not made in southern Europe until about the year 1100.Scandinavia - which now makes a great deal of the world?s paper - did not begin to make it until 1500. Most paper is made from wood. Paper-making is an important British industry and paper from Britain is sold to many countries such as Australia and South Africa. Some of the wood used in the British paper making industry comes from trees grown in Britain, but wood is also bought from other countries such as Norway. One tree is needed for every four hundred copies of a forty-page newspaper. If half the adults in Britain buy one daily paper, this uses up over a thousand trees a day. All over the world, trees are being cut down faster than they are being planted, so there may be a serious need for paper at the beginning of next century. When we think of paper, we think of newspaper, books, letters and writing paper. But there are many other uses. Only half of paper isused for books and newspaper, etc. Paper is very good for keeping you warm. Each year, more and more things are made of paper. Now we hear that chairs, tables, and even beds can be made of paper. But the latest in paper making seems to be paper houses. 1. Where was paper invented?A. In China.B. In southern Europe.C. In Scandinavia.D. In Britain. 2. Scandinavia began to make paper ____________. A. in 1100 B. in 1400 C. in 1500 D. in the first century 3. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there?s a big difference between being a writer and writing. In most cases they are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “You?ve got to want to write,”I say to them, “not want to be a writer.” The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. Only a few writers were kissed by fortune, however there are thousands more whose work is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the Coast Guard to become a freelance writer, I had no proposals at all. What I did have was a friend who found me in my room in a New York department building. I didn?t even care that it was coldand had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a good writer. After a year I still hadn?t got a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that I hardly made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn?t going to be one of those people who did wondering “What if”. I would keep putting my dream to the test, even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the Shadowland of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there. 41. The passage is meant to. A. warn young people of the hardships that a successful writer has to experience B. advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writer C. show young people it?s unrealistic for a writer to pursuewealth and fame D. encourage young people to pursue a writing career 42. What can be concluded from the passage?.A. Good writers often find their work interesting and rewardingB. Writer?s success depends on luck rather than on effortC. Famous writers usually live in poverty and isolationD. The chances for a writer to become successful are small 43. Why did the author begin to doubt himself after the first year of his writing career?. A. Because he wasn?t able to produce a single book B. Because he hadn?t seen a change for the better C. Because he wasn?t able to have a rest for a whole year D. Because he found his dream would never come true 44. The word “people” in the sentence “…people who did wondering…” in Paragraph 3 refers to those. A. who think a lot without making a decision B. who regret giving up their career halfwayC. who think too much of the positive side of lifeD. who are full of imagination even upon death 45. “Shadowland” in the last sentence refers to. A. the wonderful land one often dreams about B. the bright future that one is looking forward to C. the state of uncertainty before one?s final goal is reached D. a word that exists only in one?s imagination Key: 41. A Passage 4 42. D 43. B 44. A 45. C If we were asked exactly what we were doing a year ago, we should probably have to say that we could not remember. But if we had kept a book and had written in it an account of what we did each day, we should be able to give an answer to the question. It is the same in history. Many things have been forgotten because we do not have any written account of them. Sometimes men did keep a record of the most important happenings in their country, but often itwas destroyed by fire or in a war. Sometimes there was never any written record at all because the people then did not know how to write. For example, we know a good deal about the people who lived in China 4, 000 years ago, because they could write and leave written records for those who lived after them. But we know almost nothing about the people who lived even 200 years ago in central Africa, because they had not learned to write. Sometimes, of course, even if the people cannot write, they may know something of the past. They have heard about it from older people, and often songs and dances and stories have been made about the most important happenings. And these have been sung and acted and told for many generations for most people are proud to tell what their fathers did in the past. This we may call ?remembered history?. Some of it has now been written down. It is notso exact or so valuable to us as written history is, because words are much more easily changed when used again and again in speech than when copied in writing. But where there are no written records, such spoken stories are often very helpful.46. Which of the following ideas is not suggested in the passage?. A. Where there are no written records, there is no history B. “Remembered history”, compared with written history, is less reliable C. A written account of our daily activities helps us to be able to answer many questions D. Written records of the past play an important role in our learning of the human history 47. We know very little about the central Africa 200 years ago because. A. there was nothing worth being written down at that time B. the people there ignored the importance of keeping a record C. the written records were perhapsdestroyed by a fire D. the people there did not know how to write 48. “Remembered history” refers to. A. history based on a person?s imagination B. stories of important happenings passed down from mouth to mouth C. songs and dances about the most important events D. both B and C 49. “Remembered history” is considered valuable only when. A. it is written down B. no written account is available C. it proves to be true D. people are interested in it 50. The passage suggests that we could have learned much more about human history than we do now if the ancient people had. A. made more songs and dances B. not burnt their written records in wars C. kept a written record of every past event D. told exact stories of the most important happenings Key: 46. A 47. D 48. D 49. Lucy loves new technology. She owns a games console, an MP3 player, and a mobile phone with a built-in digital camera. David is a teacher. Lucy is his student.Like Lucy, many children grow up using computers almost every day and often know more about technology than adults. Educator Marc Prensky calls children like Lucy ―digital natives‖. So perhaps teachers need to change the way they teach and use more technology in class – because the number of digital natives will keep increasing!1 David is a digital native.2 Marc Prensky is interested in teaching with technology.3 Digital natives are comfortable using laptops and flash drives.4 Many teachers think computer games are only for having fun or killing time.5 People read books and websites in the same way.Key: FTTTF7.From: U10L2 P153SpanglishIn which city can you read signs like ―Aparca your car aquí‖ or ―Cuidado con los pickpockets‖? Travelguide investigates.1.2 million Hispanics live in the Big Apple and one in five New Yorkers speaks Spanish at home. In the last ten years, the Hispanic population has grown by 400 000. This reflects the enormousincrease in the Hispanic population in the States. There are now 42 million Hispanics resident in the USA, representing 15% of the total population. There is a new language, SPANGLISH –a strange mixture of Spanish and English –which is invading the city. The New York Times recently said that it had b ecome the city’s third official language. Its use is colloquial and often limited to short sentences and signs. Many New Yorkers now wear socketines on their feet, drop something on the carpeta, shop for grocerias and have cornfley(―cornflakes‖) for break fast.Norma Rodríguez, a 45-year-old Cuban living in Washington Heights, says it forms a part of her life now: ―Sometimes, you don’t realize that you’re mixing the two languages. You just hear them both all the time and find that you’re inventing new words.‖ Other people, however, are fighting against this new street language. Businessman Juan Cortés sees it as a sign that the Spanish language is being destroyed. ―It’s difficult, but I try not to speak it –it feels vulgar to me.‖Meanwhile, a surprising number of academics have spoken in favour of Spanglish. José María Ruiz, from NY State University, even runs courses in Spanglish and has written a dictionary. ―It is a dialogue between two languages and cultures. We have to accept that languages change and evolve. The only languages that never change are dead ones.‖1 The Spanish-speaking population has grown very fast recently.2 More people are interested in studying Spanish than before.3 Spanglish is mainly used in formal contexts.4 Norma Rodríguez d oesn’t notice when she is speaking Spanglish.5 Juan Cortés doesn’t speak Spanglish because he feels stupid when he tries.Key: TTFTF(2)阅读选择题(7篇)Reading: Read the article and choose the best choice for each question.1.From: U1L2 P10London:Melting Pot of CulturesDid you know that London is one of the most multicultural cities in the world?
