Most of us spend our lives seeking the natural world. We go fishing, sit in the garden, have a picnic, live in the suburbs or go to the seaside. The most popular leisure activity in Britain is going for a walk. When joggers jog, they don't run the streets. Every one of them tend to go to the park or the river. But despite this, our children are growing up nature deprived (剥夺)).1 spent my boyhood climbing trees. These days, children are robbed of these ancient freedoms, due to problems like crime, traffic, the loss of the open spaces and strange new ideas about what is best for children, that is to say, things that can be bought, rather than things that can be found. The truth is to be found elsewhere. A study in the US: families had moved to better bousing and the children were assessed(评估)for ADHD﹣attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (多动症).Those whose accommodation had more natural views showed an improvement of 19%; those who had the same improvement in material surroundings but no nice view improved just 4%.ADHD is one of the great problems of modem childhood. One study after another indicates that contact with nature gives huge benefits to ADHD children. However, we spend money on drugs rather than on green places. The life of old people is measurably better when they have access to nature. The increasing concern for the growing population of old people is in quality rather than quantity of years. And study after study finds that a garden is the single most important thing in finding that quality. Even problems with crime and aggressive behavior are reduced when there is contact with the natural world. We need the wild world. It is essential to our well﹣being, our health and our happiness.(1)According to the author, people enjoy________to seek nature.A.jogging on the streetB. shopping in the supermarketC.sitting in the gardenD. running in the gym.(2)From the second paragraph, we can see that________.A.children probably spend less time in nature nowadaysB.adults deprive the children of their rights to approach natureC.climbing trees will certainly do good to the childrenD.children tend to be happier as a result of their material satisfaction.(3)In what way do people benefit from their contact with nature?________A.Children with ADHD can be cured.B.Children's performance at school is greatly improved.C.A garden nearby improves the quality of old people's life.D.Problems with crime and violent behavior will easily be solved..(4)What is the main idea of this passage?________A.Nature treats children with ADHD.Access to nature improves our life.B.Getting close to nature reduces crime.C.Man can't live without natural areas.A.Delayed answers are lies.B.It is unfair to require all to answer slowly.C.Delayed answers can lead to misjudgment.D.Delayed response should be ignored completely.5.Genetic(基因的)testing cannot tell teachers anything useful about an individual pupil's educational achievement. That is the conclusion of a study that looked at how well so-called polygenic scores for education predict a person's educational achievements, based on a long-term study of thousands of people in the UK. "Some people with a very low genetic score are very high performers at age 16. Some are even in the top 3 percent," says Tim Morris at the University of Bristol, UK.And while Morris expects the accuracy of polygenic scores for educational achievements to improve, he doesn't think they will ever be good enough to predict how well an individual will do. Even relatively simple qualities such as height are influenced by thousands of genetic variants, each of which may only have a tiny effect. It has been claimed that polygenic scores can be used to make useful predictions, such as a person's likelihood of developing various diseases. One company is even offering embryo screening(screening of an unborn baby in the very stages of development)based on polygenic scores for disease risk. Some researchers—notably Robert Plomin of King's College London—think that schools should start using polygenic scores for educational achievement. In most cases, the scores may reflect qualities such as persistence as well as intelligence. To assess the usefulness of polygenic scores in education, Morris and his colleagues calculated them for 8,000 people in Bristol who are part of a long-term study known as the Children of the 90s. The participants' genomes have been queued and their academic results are available to researchers. Among other things, the team found a correlation of 0.4 between a person's polygenic score and their exam results at age 16. But there would need to be a correlation of at least 0.8 to make useful predictions about individuals, says Morris.Plomin, however, argues that the results support his opinion. "A correlation of 0.4 makes it the strongest polygenic predictor in the behavioural sciences," says Plomin. "It's so much stronger than a lot of other things we base decisions on. So it's a very big finding."Morris says schools already have access to other predictors that are more accurate, such as a pupil's earlier test results. Looking at parents' educational achievements is also a better predictor of a pupil's academic results than studying their genome, his results show. Providing teachers with an extra predictor based on genetics would just confuse matters, says Morris, and the cost cannot be justified.(1)In paragraph 2, Morris talks about "height" in order to tell readers that ________.A.some qualities are hardly affected by any genetic variantsB.some qualities are influenced by thousands of genetic variantsC.genetic scores are useful in predicting one's potential diseasesD.genetic scores can help children improve their scores at school(2)How did Morris prove the effect of polygenetic scores in education?A.By providing opposite examples.B.By explaining how the genome works.C.By listing findings from another scientist.D.By presenting facts and data from research.(3)According to Plomin, a correlation of 0.4 is reliable because it is ________.eful in telling you how intelligent and persistent children areeful in predicting people who might struggle academicallyC.stronger compared to other factors in behavioural sciencesD.strongly correlated to children's academic achievements(4)Morris suggested that schools should ________.A.study every pupil's genomesB.spend some money on genetic testsC.know about parents' educational achievementsD.provide teachers with students' genetic information三、书面表达(本题共计 1 小题,共计5分)6. The year was 1994.I drove excitedly out of the west coast town of Port Hedland, but all I saw for the first 150 kilometers were a few dead trees and smoky dust across the burnt, flat plain. And the heat!! I’d never experienced anything this terrible before. Or breathed air so thick with biting flies. But as we continued to head south on the highway to. Marble Bar—the hottest town in Australia—some low, broad hills started to rise from the horizon. As we continued down a dirt track into the hills, the burnt plains gave way to grass-covered hills. This grass is called spinifex, an amazing but cruel creation. It grows as bushes up to one meter in diameter (直径),with round, fine leaves with needle-sharp tips. The tips will go through just about any piece of cloth. My guide wore thick gaiters (护腿) to protect his legs. But he had failed to inform me of the risk. Without any gaiters, my skin was covered with needle tips that remained in my legs for months. The land, ultimately, proved worth the discomfort. Here I was walking over some of Earth’s oldest, best-preserved rocks that contain evidence of life from almost the very beginnings of time on our planet. This area had changed much from when it was first formed 3.5 billion years ago. Back then it would have been a black volcanic land, with no color from vegetation. Over the hills I might have seen a green, iron-rich sea under an orange sky heavy with carbon dioxide and without oxygen. Several billion years after that, the world would turn cold and become covered in a global ice sheet, destroying almost every living thing. When it melted away, oxygen levels rose again. Life really got going. Animals slowly occupied the land, so did new types of plants. The greening of our planet began, and a wide variety of organisms (有机体) appeared including. unfortunately for me, spinifex.4.What was the author’s first reaction to the Pilbara landscape?A.Dissatisfaction.B.Excitement.C.Amusement.D.Confusion. 5.What does the writer mean by “The land, ultimately, proved worth the discomfort”?A.It was no easy task to set foot on the land.B.He had never seen spinifex on any other land.C.The trip was valuable despite all the suffering.D.The tips remaining in his flesh were not that uncomfortable.6.What is the significance of the Pilbara landscape?A.It is where life began.B.It is still a black volcanic land.C.It is home to many unique plants.D.It contains almost no living things. 7.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A.How Life Started on Earth B.Pilbara: Rich in OrganismsC.An Abandoned but Lively Land D.Journey to a Land across TimeThroughout our daily lives, we have known plenty of people and will know more. But how can we tell if someone is worth our trust? In a paper published recently in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researcher gave us the answer. The researchers asked 401 adults from the United States to fill out a questionnaire measuring their guilt-proneness (内疚倾向) in different situations as well as several other qualities, and then play a short online game. In this game, Player 1 is given 1, which they can choose to give to Player 2. Any money given to Player 2 is then automatically increased to 2.50. Player 2 can then decide whether to keep all of the money or behave in a trustworthy way by returning a part of the money to Player 1. The researchers found more guilt-prone people were more likely to share the money with Player 1. Actually, in follow-up studies, guilt-proneness predicted trustworthiness better than other personality qualities the researchers measured. Why might guilt lead to trustworthy behavior? The researchers found people who were guilt-prone also reported feeling a must to act in ethical (合乎道德的) and responsible ways while interacting (互动) with their partners in the game. People who are guilt-prone tend to avoid engaging in behavior that might harm or disappoint others. If they do something bad, guilt encourages them to try to make things right again. Then, how can we use this research to ascertain whether someone is trustworthy? “One way to do this might be observe how they respond to experience regret,” lead author Emma Levine, assistant professor at the University of Chicago Levine, explains. Another way is to ask them to describe a difficult dilemma they faced in the past, suggests co-author Taya Cohen, associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University. This is particularly effective, Cohen and her colleagues have found, because it allows us to see if they’re concerted about the effects their actions have on others.8.What did guilt-prone player 2 tend to do in the online game?A.Keep all the money.B.Share the money with Player 1.C.Return the money to the researchers.D.Spend the money on themselves.9.Why might guilt lead to trustworthy behavior?A.It encourages people to harm others.B.It makes people feel responsible to act ethically.C.It makes people want to disappoint others.D.It makes people avoid difficult dilemmas.10.What does the underlined word “ascertain” in the last paragraph mean?A.Ask B.Express C.Describe D.Determine 11.How is the text organized and developed?A.By providing background.B.By making a lot of comparisons.C.By answering the raised questions.D.By analyzing effects of guilt-proneness.Children like playing make-believe and enjoy inventing a variety of characters while immersed (沉浸) in imaginative play. Cooking games are a fantastic way to stimulate imaginative play. Children can act out real-life situations and behaviors through pretend play. There are various online cooking games for children as well. For children, they are more than just a fun pastime activity. They also provide a number of developmental and educational benefits.Free online cooking games encourage kids to try new things and think outside the box by letting them experiment with ingredients, recipes, and preparation methods. Such games can help kids develop a growth mindset, creativity, and the freedom to make their own choices. The act of cooking, whether virtual or in the real world, requires a lot of counting and measuring, which promotes the development of fundamental mathematical abilities such as counting and adding. Additionally, many free cooking games online require kids to perform various kitchen tasks or read the recipes or lists of ingredients and then follow the directions, teaching them to read, improving their vocabulary, and boosting their confidence. Most cooking games offer an in-built social space. For example, playing multiplayer or two-player games allows children to interact with others, help each other, laugh together, solve problems in cooperation, and so on. This is especially convenient for timid or introverted kids who have difficulty reaching out to others in the real world. Online games can help these kids develop self-esteem and practice their communication skills, so they eventually feel more confident making friends in real life. However, young children can have difficulty finding age-appropriate games, using trustworthy and safe platforms, or setting limits on their screen time. Therefore, as adults, we must prioritize the kids’ online safety and well-being by helping them select the appropriate games and get the most out of the free cooking games online.12.What is the benefit of playing multiplayer or two-player cooking games?A.Children can communicate with others and learn to be cooperative.B.Children can learn how to cook together.C.Children can compete against each other and improve their skills.D.Children can learn how to use different kitchen tools.13.How do the adults ensure children’s online safety and well-being?A.Adults should not let children play online games.B.Adults should help their children select the suitable games.C.Adults should help their children play online cooking games.D.Adults should not allow children to play creative games.14.What’s the author’s attitude toward online cooking games?A.Negative.B.Neutral.C.Favorable.D.Indifferent. 15.Which of the following titles fits best?A.Virtual Cooking: A New Way to Avoid the Kitchen?B.The Benefits of Online Cooking Games for ChildrenC.Cooking Games: A Waste of Time or a Tool for Building Life Skills?D.Online cooking: A Way to Improves Children’s Social Skills二、七选五How to cultivate emotional awarenessIn school, we learned the periodic table and were told to recite the alphabet, but nobody forced us to take a class on what emotions are and how they work. 16 Yet, research shows that being aware of your emotions is hugely beneficial and people with high emotional awareness have better social and emotional functioning.Emotional awareness is being able to identify and make sense of not only our own emotions but those of others. It’s absolutely essential in maintaining good mental health. But if you’ve spent a lifetime masking your real emotions, being honest with yourself for the first time may prove tough. 17Turn to mindfulnessMindfulness is the process of bringing our attention to: the present moment and becoming more aware of our thoughts. 18 There are many ways to be mindful, frompractising breathwork to sitting in silence. Where emotional awareness is concerned, meditation which can aid clarity and allow us to view our emotions in a more measured way is strongly recommended.Practice daily self-reflection19 You’d better create a habit of checking with yourself every day. Self-reflection cultivates emotional awareness and is key to understanding why you feel the way you do. Activities such as journaling can be really beneficial in learning about your thought processes. It may also help you actively choose healthy coping strategies to manage more challenging emotions. Free-writing, where you write out everything that’s on your mind without judgement, can be used to dig deeper into your thoughts and feelings.Name what you’re feelingSometimes what we really struggle with is putting our emotions into words. 20 Instead of employing basic descriptions like angry, happy, frustrated or sad, consult The Emotion Wheel which identifies eight basic emotions at the centre of the wheel, with dozens of corresponding emotions of various intensities stemming out from it. It gives you a specific name for what you’re feeling. By naming them, we can not only find relief from those uncomfortable feelings but bring more joy and fulfilment into our lives too.A.When was the last time you stopped and truly observed how you feel?B.Turn into your emotions and honestly reflecting on how you feel is important.C.It can be difficult to feel heard by others if we don’t have the language to describe how we’re feeling.D.But it gets easier with practice.E.It’s not always easy to put a finger on exactly what’s wrong, without digging a little deeper.F.It’s a state of calm, non-judgmental state of mind.G.And for many of us, that means understanding how we feel and why can be incredibly difficult.三、完形填空Mom was late once again!!“Sorry, honey. Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter can really improve people's health.Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, makes the heart beat quicker and makes people breathe deeper; it also works on several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effects of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated(忍耐)the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain which diminishes both stress and pain.As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients' condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter. 4.According to the passage, which of the following statements is WRONG?A.Laughter is good for healthB.Laughter can make you become old quicklyC.Laughter helps to reduce pain.D.Laughter, just like physical exercise, is good for our body.5.The underlined word "diminishes" in the third paragraph means "____".A.delays B.prevents C.increases D.reduces6.Why do some doctors hold laughter clinics?A.Because they want to earn more money.B.Because they think they will help the patients recover from illnesses.C.Because they want to improve their patients' condition.D.Because they want their patients to practice how to laugh7.What would be the best title for this passage?A.Both laughter and physical exercise are good for healthB.Laughter clinics help patients improve their conditionC.Laughter can reduce the effects of painD.Laughter is the best medicine.阅读理解Popcorn Park Zoo is not like most zoos. It is a very special place. This unusual place was not originally a zoo. At first it was called the Forked River Animal Care Center. The workers there looked after lost or unwanted cats and dogs. Today the center is part of the zoo, but now many other kinds of animals are helped there, too.The changes to the center began in 1977 when a raccoon(浣熊) needed help. One of its front paws(爪子) had been badly hurt. The workers cared for the animal. Finally it was better, but it could not care for itself. The raccoon was allowed to live there. Then a hurt deer was brought there for help. It, too, stayed there after it got well.Once people heard about the wonderful work being done at the center, they began taking all kinds of hurt or homeless animals there. Soon it was no longer just a home for cats and dogs. So many animals were living there that it became more like a zoo.Popcorn Park Zoo got its funny name because many of the animals there like to eat popcorn made without oil or salt. The popcorn is sold there to help make money to care for the animals. People buy the popcorn to feed the animals as a treat.Popcorn Park Zoo now looks after more than 200 kinds of animals. Many of them live freely there. Some of the gentler ones, such as goats, sheep, geese, and deer, walk among the visitors who come to see them. Others are kept in large closed areas almost like their natural homes. All the animals there get care and love.8.Before 1977, the center was a home for ____.A.lost or unwanted cats and dogsB.hurt or homeless raccoons and goatsC.lost or unwanted deer and sheepD.hurt or homeless raccoons and geese9.How did the workers in the center help the raccoon?A.They changed its front paws.B.They cured it and let it live there.C.They sent it back to its home.D.They built another home just for it.10.The popcorn is sold in Popcorn Park Zoo to ____.A.treat the visitors B.reward the workersC.trick the animals D.raise money11.What can we learn about animals in the zoo from the last paragraph?A.They all live in closed areas.B.Some of them can walk out of the zoo freely.C.All of them are taken good care of.D.Some of them have already returned to nature.阅读理解Fu Yuanhui is China's newest sweetheart. 高二上学期英语期中考试试卷一、阅读理解1. 阅读理解Hummingbirds are very small birds. This small bird is quite an acrobat . Only a few birds, such as kingfishers and sunbirds, can hover, which means to stay in one place in the air. But no other bird can match the flying skills of the hummingbird. The hummingbird can hover, fly backward and fly upside down!Hummingbirds got their name because their wings move very quickly when they fly. This causes a humming sound. Their wings move so fast that you can’t see them at all. This takes a lot of energy. These little birds must have food about every 20 minutes to have enough strength to fly. Their favorite food is nectar . Nectar is the sweet water deep inside a flower. Hummingbirds use their long, thin bills to drink from flowers. When a hummingbird drinks nectar, it hovers in front of a flower. It never touches the flower with its wings or feet.Of all the birds in the world, the hummingbird’s colors are among the brightest. Some are bright green with red and white markings. Some are purple. One kind of hummingbird can change its color from reddish-brown to purple to red!The hummingbird’s nest is special, too. It looks like a small cup. The inside of the nest is very soft. This is because one of the things the mother birduses to build the nest is the silk from a spider’s web .(1)What is special about hummingbirds?A . They are the only birds that can hover.B . If there’s a special occasion coming up, there’s no doubt that we’ll be there, card in hand, to celebrate it. And this isn’t just for birthdays; we also give cards when people are ill or when they have got a new job. And even if you forgot s omebody’s birthday, there are even “sorry it’s late” cards. So you can pretty much find a card for any occasion. Before coming to Italy I had never even considered that our love for card giving might not be shared by other countries. In fact, my workmates told methat hardly anyone sends Christmas cards in Italy and that they actually don’t really give birthday cards either! Unbelievable! In the UK, if a close friend or family member didn’t get me a card I’d feel upset! However, the only place you can buy cards in Italy is in a shop which sells school things. In comparison, we have whole shops that sell them in the UK and we even have different types of card shops.Although cards can take up your time, from choosing the perfect one, to thinking up the pers onal message inside, I think it’s a really nice gesture. And especially with Christmas cards, it adds to that festive feeling. When I sit down to write countless cards to friends and family, I get that little bit happier that it will be Christmas soon! Especially when I see my own Christmas cards, proudly sitting on my desk wishing me a very merry Christmas.Of course, the problem comes when they’re no longer needed, when Christmas is over. It makes me sad just to throw them all away, so I try and hang on to my favorite ones.(1)According to Paragraph 1, in the UK card giving _____.A . is very popularB . is changing people’s livesC . is mainly carried out on birthdaysD . is more common between family members(2)After arriving in Italy, the author found that _____.A . Italians seldom send cardsB . cards are sold in card shopsC . the relationship between people is badD . card giving is losing its attraction slowly (3)Which of the following may the author agree with?A . Self-made cards make Christmas happy.B . Giving cards doesn’t takeup any time.C . Throwing cards away is a bad gesture.D . There is no need to save every card.(4)What’s the author’s attitude towards card giving?A . He supports it.B . He doubts it.C . He disagrees with it.D . He is uninterested in it.3. 阅读理解People are always looking for lost cities and occasionally one is found: Borobudur in Indonesia, for example. But perhaps some of the places people look for never existed —or did they? Here are just a few famous mythical cities.El DoradoEl Dorado is a story that began in 1537, when Spanish explorers found the Muisca people in the mountains of what is now Colombia. They heard the story of a man who covered himself with gold and dived into a lake. Then people began to talk of El Dorado —‘the golden man’. Soon people started to think of El Dorado as a place, too —a city of gold and amazing riches. Nowadays, the name ‘El Dorado’ is still used to mean ‘a place where you can get rich quickly’.AtlantisThere was once an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. It was the mythical island of Atlantis. The people of the island were very rich, thanks to the natural resources on their island. For hundreds of years, they lived simple lives. But slowly they began to change. They started to want power. So thegods decided to destroy Atlantis. Suddenly, the island and its people were swallowed by the sea and were never seen again.ShambhalaIn Tibetan Buddhist tradition, Shambhala is a mystical country that is hidden somewhere behind the Himalayas. Shambhala is a word from an old language that means ‘place of peace’ or ‘place of happiness’. It is said that there is no war in Shambhala, and in the future, when the world is full of war, a huge army will come out of Shambhala, destroy the wo rld’s bad rulers, and start a new Golden Age. Some people say this will happen in 2424.(1)Nowadays, ‘El Dorado’ means ‘_____’.A . ColombiaB . the golden manC . a place of great wealthD . the city with mountains(2)Atlantis was destroyed by _____.A . the godsB . its peopleC . its powerful enemiesD . its neighboring country(3)What will probably happen in 2424 according to the last paragraph?A .
