Nestled in the verdant hills of Sichuan province, China, lies the ancient and remarkable Dujiangyan Irrigation System, a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the ancient Chinese people. Also known as the "World's Oldest and Most Impressive Irrigation System," Dujiangyan is not just a structure; it's a symbol of sustainable engineering and environmental harmony. The origins of this magnificent feat date back to the3rd century BC, when the local people, led by theillustrious Li Bing, embarked on an audacious project to tame the fierce Min River. Their goal was to harness the river's power to irrigate the surrounding farmland, thus ensuring a reliable source of nourishment for the region. The result was a system of channels, dams, and weirs that not only controlled the flow of water but also protectedthe area from devastating floods. At the heart of this engineering marvel is the Yuzui, a fish-shaped dam constructed across the river. This dam divides the river into two branches, allowing water to flow smoothly through the system. Its design is so ingeniousthat it still functions effectively today, despite being over 2,000 years old.But the true genius of Dujiangyan lies in its harmonious integration with the natural environment. The system was built not just to serve man but also to respect and preserve the ecological balance of the region. The channels and dams were constructed in such a way that they minimized disruption to the river's natural flow, ensuring that the ecosystem remained intact.Over the centuries, the Dujiangyan Irrigation System has not only irrigated vast tracts of farmland but has also supported the growth of numerous cities and villages. It has been a lifeline for the people of Sichuan, ensuring prosperity and stability in this fertile region.Today, the Dujiangyan Irrigation System stands as a beacon of ancient wisdom and engineering excellence. It remains a vital component of China's irrigation network, irrigating over 5 million acres of farmland and supporting the livelihoods of millions. The legacy of Dujiangyan is not just about water or engineering; it's about the spirit of resilience andinnovation that has characterized the Chinese people for centuries. It's a reminder that we can build sustainable solutions to the challenges of our time by harnessing the power of nature and applying the principles of harmony and balance.**都江堰水利工程的奇迹**位于中国四川省郁郁葱葱的山脉之间,矗立着古老而杰出的都江堰水利工程。

Introduction to DujiangyanDujiangyan is a historic irrigation system located in Sichuan province, China. It was originally built over 2,200 years ago during the Qin Dynasty by Li Bing, a governor of the region. The main purpose of Dujiangyan is to control flooding and distribute water to the surrounding farmland. The system consists of three main parts: the Yuzui, Feishayan, and Baopingkou. The Yuzui is a massive dam made of large stones that diverts water from the Minjiang River into two different channels. The Feishayan is a wide channel that carries excess water to prevent flooding, while the Baopingkou is a narrow channel that distributes water to farms in the area. One of the most impressive features of Dujiangyan is the "no-dam" irrigation method used in the system. Instead of using traditional dams to regulate water flow, Dujiangyan relies on the natural topography of the land to control water distribution. This innovative technique has been highly effective in preventing floods and ensuring a stable water supply for agriculture.Dujiangyan is not only a marvel of ancient engineering but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors to Dujiangyan canexplore the beautiful scenery of the area, learn about the history of the irrigation system, and witness the impressive waterworks in action. Fish mouth has two main functions: water, the second eight sand. Two eight refers to the sediment deposition in the riverbed sand stone after fish mouth of neat rows of small stone, and outside the river sand (eighty percent), inner river sand (twenty percent). In this way, thewater irrigation farmland would be very clear, because most of the sediment has been outside the river walk. Allocation water varies depending on the season, look at a few small island, next to the winter spring river is dry, the wind flow by several small islands in the "S" type, make its mainstream straight at neijiang, neijiang about water inflow, outside Jiang Jin. 4 into water; The surge of the summer rain, water level rises, the water is influenced by the island, no longer the mainstream straight at the river, the proportion of the internal and external jiang river will be automatically reversed: inner river, into the water about 4 about Jiang Jin water outside. The second function is desilting, when water gallop, due to centrifugal force formed by the vortex, the sediment or washed up, or to the spillway, the excess of sediment discharge into the river. Ancient sand dam, it is to use bamboo cage gravel pile of temporary works; Now switch to concrete casting, in order to protect the effect of once and for all.The following is our last stop -- BaoPingKou. BaoPingKou named after the deep image vase, "gate" role, can automatically control the neijiang into the water, is extended to the minjiang river Jian long ridge chisel open a hole, it is cut to artificial control the baopingkou water throat.

Here is an English essay about the Dujiangyan irrigation system, with a word count over 1000:The Dujiangyan Irrigation System: A Masterpiece of Ancient Chinese EngineeringNestled in the heart of Sichuan province, the Dujiangyan irrigation system stands as an awe-inspiring testament to the ingenuity and engineering prowess of ancient Chinese civilization. This remarkable feat of hydraulic engineering, constructed over 2,000 years ago, continues to captivate both scholars and visitors alike, serving as a shining example of the remarkable advances achieved by our ancestors. The Dujiangyan system was commissioned in 256 BC under the guidance of the visionary hydraulic engineer Li Bing and his son. Faced with the challenge of taming the erratic and often devastating flooding of the Min River, they devised a revolutionary solution that would not only control the river's flow but also harness its power for the benefit of the local population. At the heart of the Dujiangyan system lies a unique and intricate design that has stood the test of time. Rather than constructing a conventional dam, Li Bing and his team employed a more nuanced approach, utilizing the natural topography of the landscape to their advantage. They strategically placed a series of interlocking structures, including the famous "fish-mouth" dam, the Sluice and the Flowing-Invariably Works, each playing a vital role in the system's functionality. The "fish-mouth" dam, with its distinctive V-shaped design, serves as the primary flood control mechanism. By directing the river's flow, it effectively diverts excess water during periods of high rainfall, preventing devastating floods from inundating the surrounding farmland and settlements. This innovative design not only safeguards the local population but also ensures the continued viability of the region's agricultural activities.Equally impressive is the Sluice, a remarkable engineering feat that regulates the distribution of water throughout the system. By carefully controlling the water flow, the Sluice ensures a consistent and reliable supply of irrigation water to the surrounding farmland, enabling the cultivation of a diverse array of crops and sustaining the local economy. The Flowing-Invariably Works, another integral component of theDujiangyan system, serves to maintain the delicate balance between the river's flow and the irrigation needs of the region. This intricate network of channels and sluices helps to prevent the silting and buildup of sediment, which can often compromise the efficiency of irrigation systems over time. The Dujiangyan irrigation system's enduring legacy is a testament to the ingenuity and foresight of its creators. For over two millennia, this remarkable engineering marvel has continued to serve the people of Sichuan, providing a reliable and sustainable source of water for agriculture and domestic use. Its ability to withstand the ravages of time, natural disasters, and even the upheavals of human history is a testament to the skill and innovation of its ancient designers.Today, the Dujiangyan irrigation system stands as a living museum, a testament to the remarkable achievements of our ancestors. Visitors from around the world flock to this UNESCO World Heritage site, eager to witness the engineering brilliance that has shaped the landscape and the lives of the people of Sichuan for centuries. As we gaze upon the intricate structures and marvel at the timeless ingenuity of the Dujiangyan system, we are reminded of the extraordinary capabilities of the human mind. This ancient marvel serves as a reminder that our ancestors possessed a profoundunderstanding of the natural world and the ability to harness its power for the betterment of humanity. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of human innovation and a testament to the lasting impact that can be achieved through thoughtful and sustainable engineering. In conclusion, the Dujiangyan irrigation system stands as a true wonder of the ancient world, a masterpiece of engineering that continues to captivate and inspire people from all corners of the globe. As we gaze upon its timeless structures and marvel at its enduring legacy, we are reminded of the incredible feats that can be accomplished when human ingenuity is combined with a deep respect for the natural world. It is a testament to the power of human innovation and a testament to the lasting impact that can be achieved through sustainable and thoughtful engineering.。

The Dujiangyan Irrigation System, an extraordinary testament to ancient Chinese engineering prowess and wisdom, stands as one of the world's oldest and largest no-dam irrigation systems still in operation today. Located on the Min River in Sichuan Province, China, this 2300-year-old marvel is not merely a hydrological infrastructure but a cultural, ecological, and economic cornerstone that has sustained millions over millennia.Dujiangyan was constructed during the Warring States period under the supervision of Li Bing, the governor of Shu Prefecture. Its design reflects a deep understanding of hydrology and geology, eschewing the traditional dam-building method for a more eco-friendly and sustainable solution. Instead of blocking the river, it ingeniously redirects water through a system of levees, channels, and weirs, effectively harnessing the river's natural flow without impeding its course. This foresight has allowed the ecosystem to thrive and minimized the risk of catastrophic floods, embodying the concept of harmony between man and nature—a principle deeply rooted in Chinese philosophy. From an engineering standpoint, Dujiangyan’s sophisticated design comprises three primary components: the Yuzui (Fish Mouth Levee), Feishayan (Flying Sand Weir), and Baopingkou (Bottle-Neck Channel). The Yuzui divides the river into an inner and outer channel, with the majority of water flowing through the outer channel for irrigation while the inner channel maintains a stable flow rate to prevent flooding in the Chengdu Plain. Feishayan then disperses excess floodwaters, and Baopingkou controls and distributes water to the fields according to seasonal needs. This intricate system allows for year-round irrigation, flood control, and sediment management, all without interrupting the river's natural habitat or migratory patterns. In terms of socio-economic impact, Dujiangyan's effectiveness is unparalleled. It transformed the once-flood-prone Chengdu Plain into the 'Land of Abundance,' nurturing fertile farmland and contributing significantly to the region's agricultural productivity. This abundance has supported large populations, fostered trade and commerce, and ultimately played a pivotal rolein the development and prosperity of Sichuan Province. Moreover, Dujiangyan serves as a critical source of drinking water for millions in the modern city of Chengdu, further underscoring its timeless relevance and high quality standard. On the environmental front, Dujiangyan's design is a pioneering example of green engineering. By avoiding the use of dams, it ensures minimal disturbance to the riverine ecology, preserving biodiversity and maintaining the health of the Min River ecosystem. It also demonstrates a profound respect for natural processes, which is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone of sustainable development.Culturally, Dujiangyan is revered as a symbol of Chinese ingenuity and resilience. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, it continues to inspire global admiration for its technical sophistication and enduring utility. The site attracts tourists from around the world, fostering cultural exchange and appreciation for China's rich history and technological legacy. In conclusion, the Dujiangyan Irrigation System represents a remarkable fusion of advanced hydraulic engineering, ecological sensitivity, and socioeconomic foresight. Its continued success after two millennia underscores the high quality and enduring value of its design. Today, Dujiangyan stands as a beacon of sustainable water management practices, offering valuable lessons for contemporary engineers and policymakers alike as they strive to balance human needs with environmental protection. Its story is a timeless reminder that innovative solutions can harmoniously blend human development with nature's rhythms, ensuring long-term benefits for both present and future generations.(Word count: approximately 680 words)For a longer version exceeding 1459 words, detailed discussions could be expanded upon each aspect mentioned above – diving deeper into the historical context, the exact scientific principles behind the system's functionality, specific examples of its socio-economic contributions over time, an extensive exploration of its environmental implications, and a thorough analysis of itscultural significance and global influence. Additionally, comparing it with contemporary irrigation systems and discussing how Dujiangyan's design philosophies could inform modern sustainable water management strategies would add further depth to the essay.。

It's an amazing water system that was built a really, really long time ago in ancient China.A long, long time ago, there was a guy named Li Bing who was a super smart engineer and he figured out a way to control the flow of water from the Min River. He built this incredible system with dams, channels, and a really clever spillway that would let the right amount of water through without causing big floods.Dujiangyan helped bring water to the dry Chengdu Plain so farmers could grow rice and other crops. It was like a giant sprinkler system for the whole area! And you know what's really amazing? Parts of Dujiangyan are still being used today after over 2,000 years! That's older than virtually everything in our modern world.I'll tell you all about how Dujiangyan works, the different parts like the Fish Mouth levees, and why it was such anincredible ancient engineering marvel. This sisters and brothers is the story of the awesome Dujiangyan irrigation system!Full 2000 words:Hi everyone! Today I'm going to tell you all about this super cool place called Dujiangyan. It's an amazing water system that was built a really, really long time ago in ancient China. I first learned about Dujiangyan in school and thought it was just the neatest thing ever. When I saw pictures of the dams, channels and spillways, I couldn't believe something that massive and complex was constructed so long ago without modern tools and machinery. I've been wanting to visit there myself, and I finally got to go on a school trip last year. Let me tell you, seeing Dujiangyan in person is even more incredible than I imagined!A long, long time ago, there was a guy named Li Bing who was a super smart engineer and he figured out a way to control the flow of water from the Min River. In those times, the Min River flooded a lot which caused big problems for the people living nearby. Li Bing realized if he could tame the river and distribute the water in a controlled way, it would be hugely beneficial. So he came up with a brilliant design to dam up the river in some areas to regulate the water flow, while lettingexcess water spill out safely through man-made channels and waterways. He built this incredible system with dams, channels, and a really clever spillway that would let the right amount of water through without causing big floods. The spillway is designed with these triple-tiered holes that release water in stages, rather than all at once which could overflow the area. Part of the spillway system uses these funnel-shaped outlets called the "Fish Mouth Levees" which is where the water pours out in a thin sheet to reduce erosion and damage. It's shaped kind of like a fish mouth, which is where it gets its name!Dujiangyan helped bring water to the dry Chengdu Plain so farmers could grow rice and other crops. It was like a giant sprinkler system for the whole area! Without this water control system, the Plain would have either dried up or been destroyed repeatedly by disastrous flooding from the Min River. Thanks to Dujiangyan's genius design, the water could be diverted through a complex system of storage basins, channels and waterways to nourish the fields across over a million acres of farmland. It truly transformed the region! And you know what's really amazing? Parts of Dujiangyan are still being used today after over 2,000 years! That's older thanvirtually everything in our modern world. The ancient dams, dikes and levees constructed from dirt, rocks and wood back in 256 BC have held up through earthquakes, floods and over two millennia of use. Sure, the system has been renovated and reinforced with more current materials over time, but the core of Dujiangyan's design by Li Bing has remained essentially the same for over 2,200 years. It's considered one of the greatest archaeological and architectural marvels of ancient China. There's tons more I could share about how this intricate water management system functions with its series of levees, dams, and diversionary channels. I could delve into the ingenious details of its hydraulic principles, environmentally-conscious flood controls, and self-regulating mechanisms to adjust water flow based on the seasons and rainfall. The ancient builders of Dujiangyan had such incredible foresight and skills to create something so sustainable and effective for irrigation and flood prevention. When I stood there overlooking the system myself, I was totally blown away by the massive scale of the engineering, while still appreciating its elegance and symbiosis with the natural landscape. Dujiangyan didn't try to aggressively reroute or reshape the river through pure man-made force. Instead, itsdesign worked in harmony with the Min River's existing path and power, channeling and distributing the flow through a brilliantly-designed network that almost seemed to let the water guide itself. It was an amazing marriage of cutting-edge hydraulics for its era combined with a respectful and sustainable harnessing of the natural environment. No wonder Dujiangyan is considered such a significant technical and philosophical landmark!I feel like I could go on and on, but I don't want to steal all the fun facts and interesting details that you'll learn from our field trip guide when we go visit Dujiangyan next month. Just get ready to be stunned by the sights and history behind one of the true wonders of ancient Chinese engineering. This genius irrigation system has been keeping the lands fertile and people thriving for over 2,200 years. Now that's what I call incredible staying power! Alright friends, that's just a little taste to whet your appetite for our upcoming adventure. Let me know if you have any other questions! I am so excited to experience the awesome Dujiangyan water conservation project with all of you.篇2Hi everyone! My name is Lily and I'm 10 years old. The Dujiangyan Dam, 45km north of Chengdu, is an ancient technological wonder of the country. More than 2000 yers ago, LiBing(250-200BC), as a local governor of the Shu State, designed this water control and irrigation dam and organized thousands of local people to complete the project to check the Mingjiang River. For many years the river, flooded the Chengdu agricultural area and local farmers suffered a lot from the water disaster. Due to the success of the project, the dam automatically diverts the Mingjiang River and channels it into irrigation canals. For many years the dam has continued to make the most of the water conservancy works。

Expansion has been undertaken since 1949 and at present the system does a good job of irrigating farming land across 33counties of the western part of Sichuan Province. Local people feel proud of the system becaude it has supported a large amount of people in their daily life。

What makes this system so good?

The system is a large hydraulic water project which consists ofthree main parts: the Fish Mouth Water-Dividing Dam, the Flying Sand Fence, and the Bottle-Neck Channel。

The Fish mouth functions to divide the flow of water into an inner river and an outer river. Long ago, when Li Bing worked as the local governor of the Shu State, he found the old river canal was too narrow to hold much water, which often overflowed the banks and caused disastrous flood. Based on natural geographic conditions, he organized the people to build a man-made dam. The whole dam looks like a fish, and the front dam has a circular cone shaped like a fish mouth. It is the dam that channels water into an outer canal and an inner canal. The outer water canal functions as the main stream and holds sixty percent of water in the river. The extra water goes through the inner canal for irrigation in Chengdu areas。

The Flying Sand Fence joins the inner and outer canals. The fence functions tocontroll the flow of water and discharge excess into the inner canal from the main stream. During the dry season the fence doesn't work much, but when floods occur, the river rushes forward along the outer canal. As it approaches the fence, the fence, the river begins to turn roundfast and soon many whirlpools are formed. The volatile whirlpools sweep away sand and pebbles and, throw them into the outer canal. For many years huge bamboo baskets were used as the fence. They were filled with stones and pebbles. However,at present, reinforced concrete weir has replaced the ancient fence。

So now, let's discuss the Bottle-Neck Channel. A trunk canal was cut through the mountain into two parts which link up the inner canal for irrigation. The small part is later called Li Dui, which means an isolated hill. Chengdu looks like a large bottle and the trunk canal between the mountain and the hill takes shape of the bottleneck. The trunk canal technically has two functions: First, it leads the water to irrigate the farming land in western Sichujan; Secondly, the trunk canal works together with the Flying Sand Weir to keep the flow below acertain point in the inner canal during flood season. Some stone tablets, which stand on the isolated hill, are engraved in Buddhist Sanskrit. The local people hope that the Buddhist tablets can exert the Buddhist superpower to harness flood disaster. For over two thousand years, in fact, the Fish Mouth Water-Dividing Dam, the Flying Sand Weir, and the Bottle-neck Channel automatically work together to control foods and sweep away sand and stones in the main stram. The local people benefit a lot from this project。
