Eight Diagrams House (八卦楼)The red-roofed and White House-like villa, now used as XiamenMuseum, is one of the landmark buildings in Xiamen. Golden Melon Villa (jin gua lou金瓜楼)The villa, built in 1922, got the name after its two golden melon liked attics. It was bought by the Philippine Chinese Mr. Huang Cimin (黄赐敏) in 1924. Gulangyu/ GulangsuGulangyu Islet, to the southwest of Xiamen Island, covers an area of 1.87 square kilometers. Its rugged rocks, winding seacoast, undulating green hills and unique workings of Mother Nature create the beautiful and intriguing scenery. The islet’s major scenic spots of Sunlight Rock, Shuzhuang Garden, and Haoyue Park are the most prominent tourist attractions.Gulangyu Islet lies in a subtropical marine monsoon climate zone, with plenty of precipitation, four warm seasons, and more than 90 families of over 4,000 varieties of evergreen plants as well as the Piptadenia macrocarpa Benth rarely seen in China, the largest Indian red sandalwood, and many varieties of rare and precious fruit trees transplanted from New Zealand. The islet's vegetation has become the top plant community because of its subtropical oceanic monsoon climate.Gulangyu Islet faces Jinmen (Quemoy) Island across the sea. The area of Xiamen Bay encircling Gulangyu Islet neighbors the Chinese White Dolphins Protected Area, Lancelet Protected Area, and the Dayu Islet Egrets Protected Area.Prior to the Song Dynasty, Gulangyu was called “Round Sandy Islet”and was overgrown with vegetation and without a trace of human habitation until the end of the Song and early in the Yuan Dynasties when a fishing family surnamed Li settled on opposite Songyu Islet.By the end of the Ming Dynasty the national hero Zheng Chenggong(known abroadas Koxinga) stationed his troops and trained his naval forces on the islet. In 1662, Zheng Chenggong led his troops eastward and recovered Taiwan, which had been occupied by the Dutch for 38 years. After the Opium War, Xiamen was opened as one of the five treaty ports for foreign trade. In 1902, a Municipal Council was elected on Gulangyu, and the islet became an International Settlement and thirteen countries set up consular residences there. During this particular period of time, foreigners and overseas Chinese made unprecedented heavy investments in the construction industry on Gulangyu Islet, resulting in a great variety of architectural styles and a blending of Chinese and Western cultures, which transformed the densely constructed islet into a “World Architectural Cocktail”.In the mid-19th century, with the dissemination of Christianity in China, Western musical culture became a part of Gulangyu Islet's elegant residential environment and created the fine musical tradition that Gulangyu Islet possesses today which has produced a great number of accomplished musicians such as Zhou Shu'an, Lin Junqing, Yin Chengzong, Chen Zuohuang and Xu Feiping. Today, Gulangyu Islet hasmore pianos per capita than any other places in China, and is home to over 100 families past and present who have been engaged in music, hence the China Musicians' Association decision to nickname Gulangyu as "Music Island".The islet's relics commemorating historical personages include the unparalleled memorial to the national hero Zheng Chenggong. In spite of weathering over the years, a lot of precious historic stone carvings are still well preserved. The islet also has more than 60 personages' residences and mausoleums such as Lin Qiaozhi, founder of China's obstetrics and gynecology; Lu Yizhang, forerunner of Chinese language modernization; Ma Yuehan, China's modern physical culture enlightenment educator, etc. With its graceful natural scenery and rich culture, the islet has become an important national historic interest and tourist attraction, and one of the top 35 scenic areas in China as well as one of the top 10 scenic areas in Fujian Province.资料来源:鼓浪屿门户网/。

Gulangyu, separated from Xiamen by the 500-metre-wide Egret River, with an area of 1.77 square kilometres, enjoys a lauditory title Garden on the Sea. The original name of the islet was Yuan Zhou Zi. In the Ming Dynasty it was renamed Gulang, meaning ''drum waves, because the holes in the southwestern reefs hit by the waves make sounds like the drum beating. Overlapping peaks foil the blue water, white clouds, green trees and bright flowers. The air in the islet is fresh. The entire place is free from any sorts of vehicles and is particularly quiet. All these render an atmosphere of a fairyland. The roar of the waves breaks on the rocks. Impressive melodies surrounding and lingering on this island make famous for its piano-laden past. As a place of residence for Westerners during Xiamen's colonial past, Gulangyu is famous for its architecture and for being home to China's largest piano museum. It is known as the piano island because people here love the piano. As early as 1913, students in schools run by foreigners started learning the piano. The enthusiasm for music later spread to more ordinary people on the island. Many piano families have since then come into being and produced accomplished musicians. And the number of the pianos possessed is in the leading place in the nation, though there is only a population of 20,000 people. No tourist can afford to miss one attraction located on the island —— the nation's largest piano museum. Divided into two exhibition halls, the museum guides visitors through a vivid history of the instrument with displays and illustrations. All different types of pianos such as miniature pianos, automatic pianos, accordion pianos and round-shaped pianos, are on display. The architecture in the islet varies greatly in style, Chinese and foreign. Thus the islet has a laudatory title the World Architecture Museum Covered in green all the year round, it's charming, elegant, secluded and serene. A great variety of villas stand shrouded by lush wood resembling numerous jadeites embellished upon a piece of verdant silk brocade. Hundreds of flowers grown on the Riguang Rock (Sunlight Rock) vie with one another for beauty. With the caressing sea breeze, it's a quite cool place in hot summer. At the foot of the rock, there's the Memorial Hall to honor the national Hero Zheng Chenggong. Today, Gulangyu is listed as one of the nation's major scenic spots. The main sites of interest here include the Sunlit Rock, Shuzhuang Park, Gangzihou Bathing Beach and Memorial Hall to Zheng Chenggong, which are visited annually by millions of people from all parts of the country and the world. For people living in the hustle and bustle of today's metropolis, citizens on this island seem to live in a paradise with a relaxing, healthy and placid lifestyle. 介绍厦门著名景点鼓浪屿的英语作文My Awesome Trip to Gulangyu IslandLast summer vacation, my family and I went on an amazing trip to Gulangyu Island in Xiamen! Gulangyu is a super cool island right off the coast of Xiamen. It's famous for its pretty colonial buildings, winding lanes, and beaches. I'm going to tell you all about our awesome Gulangyu adventure! To get to the island, we took a short ferry ride across the water from downtown Xiamen. As soon as we arrived, I could tell Gulangyu was a really special place. There were no cars or bikes allowed, just pedestrians strolling along the island's maze of stone-paved paths and alleys. The first stop on our Gulangyu tour was Shuzhuang Garden, a big garden full of flowering plants, ponds, and classical Chinese buildings. We wandered along the garden paths, enjoying the sweet floral smells and crossing over the little bridges arched over streams. I felt like I had traveled back to ancient China! My little sister even saw a bunny rabbit hopping around. After the garden, we headed to Gulangyu's most iconic sight - Sunlight Rock. It's this huge volcanic rock formation jutting out into the sea with holes that sunlight streams through, creatingreally cool light effects. We climbed up onto the rocks, feeling the sea breeze and sunshine. The views looking back towards Xiamen's skyscrapers across the strait were awesome. For lunch, we ate at a restaurant serving Guangdong cuisine like wonton noodles and dim sum. Everything was so yummy! I stuffed myself full of shrimp dumplings and barbecue pork buns. After lunch, we walked off our food babies by strolling down Gulangyu's famous Longjin Road, an avenue lined with banyan trees and historic churches, mansions, and consulates left over from when Xiamen was a foreign trade port. The buildings had a real mix of Eastern and Western styles with bright colors, stained glass, and carvings. My favorite was the large Gothic-style Catholic church with its towering spires. I felt like I was in a European city, not on a little island in China! We also checked out Piano Street, an alley where all the Chinese and Western architectural styles blended together. As the sun started to set, we made our way to the beach for the last part of our Gulangyu adventure. We kicked off our shoes and dug our toes into the warm sand, enjoying a colorful island sunset. Some people were swimming, but the water looked a little chilly, so I just waded in the shallow waves. After the sun went down, we browsed the Huanya Night Market near the beach. It was full of vendors selling snacks, clothes, trinkets and other fun stuff. I bought a traditional Gulangyu hand-painted fan as a souvenir. We sampled delicious local street foods like pan-fried dumplings, sugar puffs, and dragon beard candy before hopping on the ferry back to Xiamen.Gulangyu was such a cool, unique place to visit - like an outdoor museum blending different cultures and eras. I felt like I had traveled not just to another place, but to another time period too! The little island was overflowing with character, from its winding streets to its colorful houses to its rocky beaches. I'll definitely never forget my awesome Gulangyu adventure.。

Now linked to mainland Fujian by a causeway, Xiamen retains a strong international flavor. Known in the West as Amoy, Xiamen has a long history as a port city, and later became a center of British trade in the 19th century. Their foreign settlements, later taken over by Japanese invaders at the start of World War II, were established on the nearby small Gulangyu Island. Many of the old treaty-port and colonial buildings in Western styles survive. Xiamen was declared one of China’s first Special Economic Zones in the early 1980’s, taking advantage of the city’s heritage as a trading center and the proximity to Taiwan. Today Xiamen is one of China’s most attractive and best-maintained resort cities.Xiamen was founded in 1394 at the beginning of the Ming dynasty as a center of defense against coastal pirates. Its prosperity was due to its deepwater sheltered harbor, that supplanted nearby Quanzhou, the port that had been the center of the maritime trade with the Indies. In the mid-17th century, Xiamen and Gulangyu Island became a stronghold of Zheng Chenggong, known in the West as Koxinga, a Ming loyalist who held out against the Manchu invaders until being driven to Taiwan. Born in Japan to a Chinese pirate father and a Japanese mother, Zheng became allied with holdout Ming princes in the south who hoped for a restoration. He built up a resistance force of some 7,000 junks and a mixed force of three-quarters of a million troops and pirates. In 1661 he drove the Dutch from Taiwan and set up another base there, before his death in 1662.After the Opium Wars Xiamen became one of the first treaty ports to be opened to foreign trade and settlement following the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842. Gulangyu Island was transformed into an international settlement, where many Victorian and Neoclassical style buildings still survive. The city’s prosperity was due both to trade and to wealth sent back by Xiamen’s substantial emigrant community of overseas Chinese.Prosperity returned to Xiamen in the early 1980’s when Xiamen was designated one of the four Special Economic Zones (SEZs).02. Tour Xiamen (旅游厦门,八大景八小景)Xiamen is a well-known tourist port city in the Southeast coast of China. It is one of the Cleanest Cities of China, the Garden Cities of China, the National Environmental Protection Model Cities, and the best sightseeing cities in China. Not only being wealthy with travel resources, Xiamen has also temperate weather, fast and convenient transport and communication, and complete travel establishments. In the old times, there were "Eight Major Landscapes" and "Eight Minor Landscapes" "Landscapes Beyond Landscapes" in Xiamen and altogether 24 scenic spots were included in the three general terms. Some of the 24 sights, such as "Wonderland of Gulang", "Five Old Gentlemen Reaching the Clouds", "Watching Sunrise on Hongji Summit", "Night Moon by Tiger Brook", "White Deer Spurting Smoke", still can be traced today.By reorganizing old landscapes and developing new sceneries, Xiamen has formed five main Tourist areas-- Gulangyu Island Tourist Area, Nanputuo Temple Tourist Area, Wangshi Rock Tourist Area, Huangcuo Tourist Area and Jimei Tourist Area. Beside its richful travel resources and pleasant weather, Xiamen also provides fast and convenient transportation and communication, and complete travel establishments. All makes Xiamen one of the most suitable cities for investors and tourists in China.03.Gulangyu Island 鼓浪屿英文介绍1A ten-minute ferry ride off the southwest side of Xiamen, the 2 square km (3/4 sq. mile) Gulangyu Island (Island of Blown Waves) was the center for foreign communities who settled here after 1842. Many built Western-style mansions, churches, warehouses, and government buildings which still survive. Sunlight Rock (Riguang Yan) dominates the island from its modest 93-meter height. The island includes a statue of Koxinga and a Koxinga Museum (Koxinga bowuguan), which documents the career of that pirate turned resistance leader. The Xiamen Museum (Xiamen Bowuguan) includes more than a thousand exhibits, including porcelain and jade collections. On the southern shore of the island is the Shuzhuang Garden, which once belonged to a Taiwanese businessman who moved to the island after the Japanese took over Taiwan in 1895.04.Gulangyu Island 鼓浪屿英文介绍2Gulangyu, separated from Xiamen by the 500-metre-wide Egret River, with an area of 1.77 square kilometres, enjoys a lauditory title "Garden on the Sea." As a place of residence for Westerners during Xiamen's colonial past, Gulangyu is famous for its architecture and forbeing home to China's largest piano museum. No tourist can afford to miss one attraction located on the island -- the nation's largest piano museum. Thus the islet has a laudatory title "the World Architecture Museum" Covered in green all the year round, it's charming, elegant, secluded and serene. At the foot of the rock, there's the Memorial Hall to honor the national Hero Zheng Chenggong.Today, Gulangyu is listed as one of the nation's major scenic spots. The main sites of interest here include the Sunlit Rock, Shuzhuang Park, Gangzihou Bathing Beach and Memorial Hall to Zheng Chenggong, which are visited annually by millions of people from all parts of the country and the world.
