students selecting their lecturesPart II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) (15 minutes) Directions:In this part, you will have 15 minute to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on Answer Sheet 1.For questions 1-7, markY (for YES) if the statement agrees with the information given in the passage;N (for NO) if statement contradicts the information given in the passage;NG (for NOT GIVEN) if the information is not given in the passage. For question 8-10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage.Six Secrets of High-Energy PeopleThere’s an energy crisis in America, and it has nothing to do with fossil fuels. Millions of us get up each morning already wear y over the day holds. “I just can’t get started,” p eople say. But it’s not physical energy that most of us lack. Sure, we could all use extra sleep and a better diet. But in truth, people are healthier today than at any time in history. I can almost guarantee that if you long for more energy, the problem is not with your body. What you’re seeking is not physical energy. It’s emotional energy. Yet, sad to say, life sometimes seems designed to exhaust our supply. We work too hard. We have family obligations. We encounter emergencies and personal crises. No wonder so many of us suffer from emotionalfatigue, a kind of utter exhaustion of the spirit. And yet we all know people who are filled with joy, despite the unpleasant circumstances of their lives. Even as a child, I observed people who were poor, or disabled, or ill, but who nonetheless faced life with optimism and vigor. Consider Laura Hillenbrand, who despite an extremely weak body, wrote the best-seller Seabiscuit. Hillenbrand barely had enough physical energy to drag herself out of bed to write. But she was fueled by having a story she wanted to share. It was emotional energy that helped her succeed.Unlike physical energy, which is finite and diminishes with age, emotional energy is unlimited and has no thing to do with genes or upbringing. So how do you get it? You can’t simply tell yourself to be positive. You must take action. Here are six practical strategies that work.1. Do something new.Very little that’s new occurs in our lives. The impact of thi s sameness on our emotional energy is gradual, but huge: It’s like a tire with a slow leak. You don’t notice it at first, but eventually you’ll get a flat. It’s up to you to plug the leak—even though there are always a dozen reasons to stay stuck in your d ull routines of life. That’s where Maura, 36, a waitress, found herself a year ago.Fortunately, Maura had a lifeline—a group of women friends who meet regularly to discuss their lives. Their lively discussions spurred Maura to make small but nevertheless life altering changes. She joined a gym in the next town. She changed her look with a short haircut and new black T-shirts. Eventually, Maura gathered the courage to quit her job and start her own business. Here’s a challenge: If it’s something you wouldn’t ordinarily do, do it. Try a dish you’ve never eaten. Listen to music you’d ordinarily tune out. You’ll discover these small things add to your emotional energy.2. Reclaim life’s meaning. So many of my patients tell me that their lives used to have meaning, but that somewhere along the line things went stale. The first step in solving this meaning shortage is to figure out what you really care about, and then do something about it. A case in point is Ivy, 57, a pioneer in investment banking. “I mistakenly believed that all the money I made would mean something,” she says. “But I feel lost, like a 22-year-old wondering what to do with her life.” Ivy’s solution? She started a program that shows Wall Streeters how to donate time and money to poor children. In the process, Ivy filled her life with meaning.3. Put yourself in the fun zone. Most of us grown-ups are seriously fun-deprived. High-energy people have the same day-to-day work as the rest of us, but they manage to find something enjoyable in every situation. A real estate broker I know keeps herself amused on the job by mentally redecorating the houses she shows to clients. “I love imagining what even the most run-down house could look like with a little tender loving care,” she says. “It’s a challenge—and the least desirable properties are usually the most fun.”We all define fun differently, of course, but I can guarantee this: If you put just a bit of it into your day, you energy will increase quickly.4. Bid farewell to guilt and regret.Everyone’s pa st is filled with regrets that still cause pain. But from an emotional energy point of view, they are dead weights that keep us from moving forward. While they can’t merely be willed away, I do recommend you remind yourself that whatever happened is in the past, and nothing can change that. Holding on to the memory only allows the damage to continue into the present.5. Make up your mind.Say you’ve been thinking about cutting your hair short. Will it look stylish—or too extreme? You endlessly think it over. Having the decision hanging over your head is a huge energy drain.Every time you can’t decide, you burden yourself with alternatives. Quit thinking that you have to make the right decision; instead, make a choice and don’t look back.6. Give to get.Emotional energy has a kind of magical quality; the more you give, the more you get back. This is the difference between emotional and physical energy. With the latter, you have to get it to be able to give it. With the former, however, you get it by giving it.Start by asking everyone you meet, “How are you?” as if you really want to know, then listen to the reply. Be the one who hears. Most of us also need to smile more often. If you don’t smile at the person you love first thing in the morning, you’re sucki ng energy out of your relationship. Finally, help another person—and make the help real, concrete. Give a massage (按摩) to someone you love, or cook her dinner. Then, expand the circle to work. Try asking yourself what you’d do if your goal were to be helpful rather than efficient. After all, if it’s true that what goes around comes around, why not make sure that what’s circulating around you is the good stuff?注意:此部分试题请在答题卡1上作答。

2012年6月英语四级真题及答案(含解析)
2012年6月大学英语四级真题答案解析Part I Writing标准版Doing Shopping OnlineWith the development of the Internet, shopping is no longer a tiring thing. Just click your mouse to choose the articles you like, and the purchase is done. You don't even have to step out of the room. It seems all easy and quick. However, people's opinions vary on this trend. Some believe that on line shopping is time and money saving. With plentiful selection options, they can buy whatever they like at any time convenient. Still others insist that mis-purchasing alone is annoying enough, not to mention the credibility of the sellers and the safety of their accounts. In my opinion, the convenience and excitement of on line shopping is beyond all doubts. In the meantime, we must always bear in mind that certain traps do exist, so we'd better make sure the sellers are trustworthy before buying. In addition, we should also guard ourselves from the potential hackers who might steal our account information.文章点评:这是一篇“中等偏上”的学生作文。

As baby boomers(二战后婴儿潮时期出生的人) came of high-school age, big schools promised economic efficiency. A greater choice of courses, and, of course, better football teams. Only years later did we understand the trade-offs this involved: the creation of excessive bureaucracies(官僚机构),the difficulty of forging personal connections between teachers and students.SAT scores began dropping in 1963;today,on average,30% of students do not complete high school in four years, a figure that rises to 50% in poor urban neighborhoods. While the emphasis on teaching to higher, test-driven standards as set in No Child Left Behind resulted in significantly better performance in elementary(and some middle)schools, high schools for a variety of reasons seemed to have made little progress.Size isn’t everything, but it does matter, and the past decade has seen a noticeable countertrend toward smaller schools. This has been due ,in part ,to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has invested $1.8 billion in American high schools, helping to open about 1,000 small schools-most of them with about 400 kids each with an average enrollment of only 150 per grade, About 500 more are on the drawing board. Districts all over the country are taking notice, along with mayors in cities like New York, Chicago and San Diego. The movement includes independent public charter schools, such as No.1 BASIS in Tucson, with only 120 high-schoolers and 18 graduates this year. It embraces district-sanctioned magnet schools, such as the Talented and Gifted School, with 198 students, and the Science and Engineering Magnet,with383,which share a building in Dallas, as well as the City Honors School in Buffalo, N.Y., which grew out of volunteer evening seminars for students. And it includes alternative schools with students selected by lottery(抽签),such as H-B Woodlawn in Arlington, V a. Andmost noticeable of all, there is the phenomenon of large urban and suburban high schools that have split up into smaller units of a few hundred, generally housed in the same grounds that once boasted thousands of students all marching to the same band.Hillsdale High School in San Mateo, Calif, is one of those, ranking No.423—among the top 2% in the country—on Newsweek’s annual ranking of America’s top high schools. The success of small schools is apparent in the listings. Ten years ago, when the first Newsweek list based on college-level test participation was published, only three of the top 100 schools had graduating Classes smaller than 100 students. This year there are 22. Nearly 250 schools on the full ,Newsweek list of the top 5% of schools nationally had fewer than 200 graduates in 2007.Although many of Hillsdale’s students came from wealthy households, by the late 1990 average test scores were sliding and it had earned the unaffectionate nickname (绰号) “Hillsjail. ” Jeff Gilbert. A Hillsdale teacher who became principal last year, remembers sitting with other teachers watching students of a graduation ceremony and asking one another in astonishment, “How did that student graduate?”So in 2003 Hillsdale remade its elf into three “houses,” romantically named Florence, Marrakech and Kyoto. Each of the 300 arriving ninth graders are randomly(随机地) assigned to one of the houses. Where they will keep the same four core subject teachers for two years, before moving on to another for 11th and 12th grades. The closeness this system cultivates is reinforced by the institution of “advisory” classes Teachers meet with students in groups of 25, five mornings a week, for open-ended discussions of everything from homework problems to bad Saturday-night dates. The advisers also meet with students privately and stay in touch with parents, so they are deeply invested in the students’ success.“We’re constantly talking about one another’s advisers,” says English teacher Chris Crockett. “If you hear that yours isn’t doing well in math, or see them sitting outside the dean’s office, it’s like a personal failure.” Along with the new structure came a more demanding academic program, the percentage of freshmen taking biology jumped from 17 to 95.“It was rough for some. But by senior year, two-thirds have moved up to physics,” says Gilbert “Our kids are coming to school in part because they know there are adults here who know them and care for them.”But not all schools show advances after downsi zing, and it remains to be seen whether smaller schools will be a cure-all solution. The Newsweek list of top U.S. high schools was made this year, as in years past, according to a single metric, the proportion of students taking college-level exams. Over the years this system has come in for its share of criticism for its simplicity. But that is also its strength: it’s easy for readers to understand, and to do the arithmetic for their own schools if they’d like.Ranking schools is always controversial, and this year a group of 38 superintendents(地区教育主管)from five states wrote to ask that their schools be excluded from the calculation.“It is impossible to know which high schools are ‘the best’ in the nation, ”their letter read. in part. “Determining whether different schools do or don’t offer a high quality of education requires a look at man different measures, including students’ overall academic accomplishments and their subsequent performance in college. And taking into consideration the unique needs of their communities.”In the end, the superintendents agreed to provide the data we sought, which is, after all, public information. There is, in our view, no real dispute here, we are all seeking the same thing, which is schools that better serve our children and our nation by encouraging students to tackle tough subjects under the guidance of gifted teachers. And if we keep working toward that goal, someday, perhaps a list won’t be necessary.注意:此部分试题请在答卡1上作答.1. Fifty years ago. big. Modern. parent, the fixed-line phone, you get whoever answers it.This has several implications. The most common one, however, and perhaps the t hing that has changed our culture forever, is the “meeting” influence.People no longer need to make firm plans about when and where to meet.Twenty years ago, a Friday night would need to be arranged in advance. You needed enough time to allow everyone to get from their place of work to the first meeting place. Now, however, a night out can be arranged on the run.It is no longer “see you there at 8”, but “text me around 8 and we'll see where we all are”.Texting changes people as well.In their paper, “insights into the Social and Psychological Effects of SMS Text Messaging”, two British researchers distinguished between two types of mobile phone users: the “talkers” and the “texters”-those who prefer voice to text message and those who prefer text to voice. They found that the mobile phone's individuality and privacy gave texters the ability to express a whole new outer personality.Texters were likely to report that their family would be surprised if they were to read their texts. This suggests that texting allowed texters to present a self-image that differed from the one familiar to those who knew them well.Another scientist wrote of the changes that mobileshave brought to body language. There are two kinds that people use while speaking on the phone. There is the “speakeasy”: the head is held high, in a self-confident way, chatting away. And there is the “spacemaker”: these people focus on themselves and keep out other people.Who can blame them? Phone meetings get cancelled or reformed and camera-phones intrude on people's privacy. So, it is understandable if your mobile makes you nervous. But perhaps you needn't worry so much. After all, it is good to talk.81 when people plan to meet nowadays, they A: arrange the meeting place beforehandB.postpone fixing the place till last minuteC: seldom care about when and where to meetD: still love to work out detailed meeting plans.82 According to the two British researchers, the social and psychological effect are mostly likely to be seen onA: TALKERSB;the “speakeasy”c.the “spacemaker”D.textersWe can infer from the passage that the texts sent by texters areA: quite revealingB: well writtenc: unacceptable by othersd;shocking to othersaccording to the passage ,who is afraid of being heard while mobiled: body language and the mobile phone!TEXT BOver the last 25 years, British society has changed a great deal-or at least many parts of it have.In some ways, however, verylittle has changed, particularly where attitudes are concerned.Ideas about social class-whether a person is “working-class” or “middle-class”-are one area in which changes have been extremely slow.In the past, the working-class tended to be paid less than middle-class people, such as teachers and doctors. As a result of this and also of the fact that workers' jobs were generally much less secure, distinct differences in life-styles and attitudes came into existence. The typical working man would collect his wages on Friday evening and then, it was widely believed, having given his wife her “housekeeping”, would go out and squander the rest on beer and betting. The stereotype of what a middle-class man did with his money was perhaps nearer the truth. He was-and still is-inclined to take a longer-term view. Not only did he regard buying a house of these provided him and his family with security.Only in very few cases did workers have the opportunity (or the education and training)to make such long-term plans.Nowadays, a great deal has changed. In a large number of cases factory workers earn as much, if not more, than their middle-class supervisors.Social security and laws to improve century, have made it less necessary than before to worry about “tomorrow”.Working-class people seem slowly to be losing the feeling of inferiority they had in the past.In fact there has been a growing tendency in the past few years for the middle-classes to feel slightly ashamed of their position. The changes in both life-styles and attitudes are probably most easily seen amongst younger people. They generally tend to share very similar tastes in music and clothes, they spend their money in having a good time, and save for holidays or longer-term plans when necessary. There seems to be much less difference than inprecious generations.Nevertheless, we still have a wide gap between the well-paid(whatever the type of job they may have)and the low-paid.As long as this gap exists, there will always be a possibility that new conflicts and jealousies will emerge, or rather that the old conflicts will re-appear, but between different groups.86, which of the following is seen as the cause of class differences in the past?A: life style and occupationB: Attitude and incomeC: income and job securityD: job security and hobbiesthe writer seems to suggest that the description of —— is Changes are slowly taking place in all sectors of the British society.B: The gap between working-class and middle-class young people is narrowingC: different in income will remain but those in occupation will disappearD: middle-class people may sometimes feel inferior toworking-class people!TEXT CFor several days I saw little of Mr.Rochester.In the morning he seemed much occupied with business, and in the afternoon gentlemen from the neighourhood called and some times stayed to dine with him. When his foot was well enough, he rode out a great deal.During this time, all my knowledge of him was limited to occasional meetings about the house, when he would sometimes pass me coldly, and sometimes bow and smile. His changes of manner did not offend me, because I saw that I had nothing to do with the cause of them. One evening, several days later, I was invited to talk to Mr.Rochester after dinner. He was sitting in his armchair, and looked not quite so severe, and much less gloomy. There was a smile on his lips, and his eyes were bright, probably with wine.As I was looking at him, he suddenly turned, and asked me, “do you think I'm handsome, Miss Eyre?”The answer somehow slipped from my tongue before I realized it: 'No, sir.“”ah, you really are unusual! You are a quiet, serious little person, but you can be almost rude.“”Sir, I'm sorry.I should have said that beauty doesn't matter, or something like that,“"no, you shouldn't!I see, you criticize my appearance, and then you stab me in the back! You have honesty and feeling. There are not many girls like you.But perhaps I go too fast.Perhaps you have awaful faults to counterbalance your few good pointsI thought to myself that he might have too.He seemed to read my mind, and said quickly,” yes, you're right.I have plenty of faults.I went the wrong way when I was twenty-one, and have never found the right path again.I might have been verydifferent.I might have been as good as you, and perhaps wiser.I am not a bad man, take my word for it, but I have done wrong. It wasn't my character, but circumstances which were to blame. Why do I tell you all this? Because you're the sort of person people tell their problems and secrets to, because you're sympathetic and give them hope.“It seemed he had quite a lot to talk to me.He didn't seem to like to finish the talk quickly, as was the case for the first time.”Don't be afraid of me, Miss Eyre.“ He continued.” you don't relax or laugh very much, perhaps because of the effect Lowood school has had on you.But in time you will be more natural with me, and laugh, and speak freely. You're like a bird in a cage. When you get out of the cage, you'll fly very high.Good night.“91:at the beginning miss Eyre interaction comfortable, and yet the machine would remain slightly unpredictable and therefore interesting. In its first encounter it might be somewhat hesitant, but as it came to know the user it would progress to a more relaxed and intimate style. The machine would not be a passive participant but would add its own suggestions, information, and opinions;it would sometimes take the initiative in developing or changing the topic and would have a personality of its own.Friendships are not made in a day, and the computer would be more acceptable as a friend if it imitated the gradual changes that occur when one person is getting to know another. At an appropriate time it might also express the kind of affection that stimulates attachment and intimacy. The whole process would be accomplished in a subtle way to avoid giving an impression of over-familiarity that would be likely to produce irritation. After experiencing a wealth of powerful, well-timed friendship indicators, the user would be very likely to accept the computer as far more than a machine and might well come to regard it as a friend. An artificial relationship of this type would provide many of the benefits that could continue from previous discussions. It would have a familiarity with the user's life as revealed in earlier contact, and it would be understanding and good-humored.The computer's own personality would be lively and impressive, and it would develop in response to that of the user. With features such as these, the machine might indeed become a very attractive social partner.96.Which of the following with the increasing environmental pollution, the measures for protecting environment are widely taken in the world, among which levying environmental taxes is considered to be effective.Since car sales have reached a historic peak these days, the government suggests that private car owners should be taxed for pollution. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not so much a solution as a gesture, because basically it can’t alleviate the pressing environmental issues. To begin with, though large in number, private car is not the only factor causing environmental pollution. If private car owners were taxed for pollution, other public vehicles, including buses and trains, should be taxed as well for the simple reason that they are also not environmental friendly. If not, complaints will accumulate concerning the unfairness, which thus will damage the harmony of our society. Also, taxing the private car owners fails to decrease the number of cars running on the road as expected. For those who are accustomed to it, an extra tax will never stop them from enjoying the convenience and pleasure of car driving. What’s more, levying a tax may make pollution becomes “reasonable”, because they would think they have paid for it.Obviously, it means nothing to protecting environment. As a result, it’s far from a good solution to tax private car owners for pollution, assuming it will solve environmental problems. On the contrary, immediate actions should be taken to develop new energy so as to cut down car pollution as a whole⑨.SECTION B NOTE-WRITING[10 MIN]April 18th, 2011Dear Lyn,It’s Millions of us get up each morning already weary over the day holds. I just cant get started people say. But its not physical energy that most of us lack. Sure,we could all use extra sleep and a better diet. But in truth, people are healthier today than at any time in history. I can almost guarantee that if you long for more energy, the problem is not with your body. What youre seeking is not physical energy. Its emotional energy. Yet,sad to say life sometimes seems designed to exhaust our supply. We work too hard. We have family obligations. We encounter emergencies and personal crises. No wonder so many of us suffer from emotional fatigue,a kind of utter exhaustion of the spirit. And yet we all know people who are filled with joy, despite the unpleasant circum stances of their lives. Eyen as a child observed people who were poorordisabledorill, but who nonetheless faced life with optimism and vigor. Consider Laura Hillenbrand, who despite an extremely weak body wrote the best-seller Seabiscuit. Hillenbrand barely had enough physical energy to drag herself out of be to write. But she was fueled by having a story she wanted to share. It wasemotional energy that helped her succeed.Unlike physical energy, which is finite and diminishes with age, emotional energy is unlimited and has nothing to do with genesorup bringing. So how do you get it?You cant simply tell yourself to be positive. You must take action. Here are six practical strategies that work.1.Do something new.Very little thats new occurs in our lives. The impact of this sameness on our emotional energy is gradual, but huge:It…s like a tire with a slow leak. You don…t it at first, but eventually you…ll get a flat. It…s up to you to plug the leak--even though there are always a dozen reasons to stay stuck in your dull routines of life. That…s where Maura,36,a waitress, found herself a year ago. Fortunately,Maura had a lifeline--a group of women friends who meet regularly to discuss their lives. Their lively discussions spurred Maura to make small but nevertheless life altering changes. She joined a gym in the next town. She changed her look with a short haircut and new black T-shirts. Eventually,Maura gathered the courage to quit her job and start her own business. Here…s a challenge:If it…s something you wouldn…t ordinarily do,do it. Try a dish you…ve never eaten. Listen to music you…d ordinarily tune out. You…ll discover these small things add to your emotional energy.2.Reclaim life…s meaning. So many of my patients tell me that their lives used to have meaning, but that somewhere along the line things went state. The first step in solving this meaning shortage is to figure out what you really care about, and then do something about it. A case in point is Ivy,57,a pioneer in investment banking. I mistakenly believed that all the money I made would mean something. she says. But I feel lost, like a 22-year-old wondering what to do with her life. Ivy…s solution? She started a program that shows Wall Streeters how to donate time and money to poor children. In the process,Ivy filled her life with meaning.3.Put yourself in the fun zone. Most of us grown-ups are seriously fun-deprived. High-energy people have the same day-to -day work as the rest of us,but they manage to find something enjoyable in every situation. A real estate broker I know keeps herself amused on the job by mentally redecorating the houses she shows to clients. I love imagining what even the most run-down house could look like withy a little tender loving care, she says. It…s a challenge--and the least desirable properties areusually the most fun.We all define fun differently,of course, but I can guarantee this:If you put just a bit of it into your day,you energy will increase quickly.4.Bid farewell to guilt and regret.Everyone…s past is filled with regrets that still cause pain. But from an emotional energy point of view, they are dead weights that keep us from us from moving forward. While they can…t merely be willed away,I do recommend you remind yourself that whatever happened is in the past, and nothing can change that. Holding on to the memory only allows the damage to continue into the present.5.Make up your mind.Say youve been thinking about cutting your hair short. Will it look stylish ortoo extreme? You endlessly think it over. Having the decision hanging over your head is a huge energy drain. Every time you cant decide, you burden yourself with alternatives. Quit thinking that you have to make the right decision; instead, make a choice and dont look back.6.Give to get.Emotional energy has a kind of magical quality; the more you give, the more you get back. This is the difference between emotional and physical energy. With the latter.,You have to get it to be able to give it. With the former, however, you get it by giving it.Start by asking everyone you meet,How are you?as if you really want to know, then listen to the reply. Be the one who hears. Most of us also need to smile more often. If you dont smile at the person you love first thing in the morning, youre sucking energy out of your relationship. Finally, help another personand make the help real, concrete. Give a massage (按摩)to someone you love, orcook her dinner,Then, expand the circle to work. Try asking yourself what youd do if your goal were to be helpful rather than efficient. After all,if its true that what goes around comes around, why not make sure that whats circulating around you is the good stuff?1. 【Y】【N】【NG】2. 【Y】【N】【NG】3. 【Y】【N】【NG】4. 【Y】【N】【NG】5. 【Y】【N】【NG】6.【Y】【N】【NG】7. 【Y】【N】【NG】注意:此部分试题请在答题卡1上作答.1. As a boy,he spent time in the larger cities of Italy,France and Switzerland,Where bottled water is consumed daily. Even then,he kept a water journal, noting the brands he liked best. My dog could tell the difference between bottled and tap water. He says. But is plain tap water all that bad?Not at all. In fact,New Yorks municipal water for more than a century was called the champagne of tap water and until recently considered among the best in the world in terms of both taste and purity. Similarly,a magazine in England found that tap water from the Thames River tasted better than several leading brands of bottled water that were 400 times more expensive.Nevertheless,soft-drink companies view bottled water as the next battle-ground for market share-this despite the fact that over 25 percent of bottled water comes from tap water:PepsiCos Aquafina and Coca-Colas Dasani are both purified tap water rather than spring water. As diners thirst for leading brands, bottlers and restaurateurs salivate(垂涎)over the profits. A restaurants typical mark-up on wine is 100 to 150 percent, whereas on bottled water its often 300 to 500 percent. But since water is much cheaper than wine, and many of the fancier brands arent available in stores, most dines dont noticeorcare. As a result, some restaurants are turning up the pressure to sell bottled water. According to an article in The Street Journal, some of the more shameless tactics include placing attractive bottles on the table for a visual sell, listing brands on the menu without prices, and pouring bottled water without even asking the dinners if they want it.Regardless of how its sold, the popularity of bottled water taps into our desire for better health, our wish to appear cultivated, and even a longing for lost purity.注意:此部分试题请在答题卡2上作答.57. The line of thought involved in this shift can be pursued further. Imagine a person who is about the right weight ,but does not eat very nutritious(有营养的)foods, who feels OK but exercises only occasionally, who goes to work every day,but is not an outstanding worker, who drinks a few beers at home most nights but does not drive while drunk ,and who has no chest painsorabnormal blood counts, but sleeps a lot and often feels tired. This person is not ill. He may not even be at risk for any particular disease. But we can imagine that this person could be a lot healthier. The field of medicine has not traditionally distinguished between someone who is merely not ill and someone who is in excellent health and pays attention to the bodys special needs. Both types have simply been called well. In recent years, however, some health specialists have begun to apply the terms well and wellness only to those who are actively striving to maintain and improve their health. People who are well are concerned with nutrition and exercise and they make a point of monitoring their body…s condition. Most important, perhaps, people who are well take active responsibility for all matters related to their health. Even people who have a physical diseaseorhandicap (缺陷)may be well,in this new sense,if they make an effort to maintain the best possible health they can in the face of their physical limitations. Wellness may perhaps best be viewed not as a state that people can achieve, but as an ideal that people can strive for. People who are well are likely to be better able to resist disease and to fight disease when it strikes. And by focusing attention on healthy ways of living, the concept of wellness can have a beneficial impact on the ways in which people face the challenges of daily life.62.Today medical care is placing more stress on______.A)keeping people in a healthy physical condition B)monitoring patients… body functionsC)removing people…s bad living habits D)ensuring people…s psychological wel l-being63.In the first paragraph, people are reminded that_____.A)good health is more than not being ill B)drinking, even if not to excess, could be harmful C)regular health checks are essential to keeping fit D )prevention is more difficult than cure 64.Traditionally,a person is considered well if he ______.A)does not have any unhealthy living habits&nb sp; B)does not have any physical handicaps C)is able to handle his daily routines D)is free from any kind of disease65.According to the author, the true meaning of wellness is for people _____.A)to best satisfy their body…s special needs B)to strive to maintain the best possible health C)to meet the strictest standards of bodily health D)to keep a proper balance between work and leisure66.According to what the author advocates, which of the following groups of people would be considered healthy?A)People who have strong muscles as well as slim figures.B)People who are not presently experiencing any symptoms of diseaseC)People who try to be as possible, regardless of their limitations.D)People who can recover from illness even without seeking medical care.Part V Cloze (15 minutes)Directions:There are 20 blanks in the following passage. The closeness this system cultivates is reinforced by the institution of “advisory” classes Teachers meet with students in groups of 25, five mornings a week, for open-ended discussions of everything from homework problems to bad Saturday-night dates. The advisers also meet with students privately and stay in touch with parents, so they are deeply invested in the students‟ success.“We‟re constantly talking about one another‟s advisers,” says English teacher Chris Cro ckett. “If you hear that yours isn‟t doing well in math, or see them sitting outside the dean‟s office, it‟s like a personal failure.” Along with the new structure came a more demanding academic program, the percentage of freshmen taking biology jumped from 17 to 95.“It was rough for some. But by senior year, two -thirds have moved up to physics,” says Gilbert “Our kids are coming to school in part because they know there are adults here who know them and care for them.”But not all schools show advances afte r downsizing, and it remains to be seen whether smaller schools will be a cure-all solution. 2006-2012四级真题翻译答案及详细解析2006至2012年四级翻译答案2006年12月1.adapt oneself to life// adapt oneself to living in different cultures【解析】考查短语adapt oneself to sth. /to doing sth.2.nothing is more attractive to me than reading 【解析】考查比较级3.would have a chance to survive// would have a chance of survival【解析】考查与过去事实相反的虚拟语气4. might feel lonely when they are far from home//whey they are not in their hometown/ when they are traveling.【解析】考查情态动词。
5. at a speed/rate of 12 million per year / /at an annual speed of 12 million.【解析】考查短语at a speed of2007年6月【解析】汉语部分看似不易找到合适的译文,实际上考察的是固定搭配quit sth.如果考生在复习中注意到在听力段对话中经常出现的quit一词,如 quit the class, quit the job等,就可以从中获得启发,写出quit the match这一表达。
2.at your convenience【解析】考察的也是不太常用的固定用法at your convenience。
本次考试的最后两题,都明显侧重于实际交际中的英语常用表达掌握,语言的本质是交流的工具,90和91题显示,四级新题型的指导思想越来越明显地表现出对这一宗旨的强调。
2007年12月1.Thanks to/Owing to series of new inventions 【解析】此句翻译的关键是“多亏了”这个短语,翻译成thanks to 或owing to 要比because of 或due to 好得多。
I feel/get tired more easily than before【解析】此句中翻译比较结构不是难点,比较级more ….than , 大家应该都能翻,但是如果把这句简单翻译成 I feel more easily tired 得分应该不会太高。
2.no matter what sacrifice I am going to make/ /whatever sacrifice I will make/ /no matter how much I would sacrifice【解析】此句的难点在于“无论”的翻译,no matter whatever 是重点。
3.it/ the former is more convenient and timesaving【解析】注意开始的“它”如果简单翻译成“it”会有指代不清的嫌疑,而改用the former (前者)会更好一些。
另外要注意convenient 一词的拼写!4.is measured by how much they can borrow 【解析】此句翻译时一定要注意和后面how much they can earn 的呼应。
2008年6月1.can be applied to the development of the new technology.【解析】考查词组apply to及被动语态2.must be wrong【解析】考查情态动词must表推测的用法3.whatever job it is/ no matter what job it is【解析】考查状语从句,不管no matter +连接词或-ever 的用法pared with the place where I grew up 【解析】考查非谓语动词重的过去分词作状语及词组5.Not until he had finished the mission【解析】考查倒装结构,原句已经倒装,则词组not… until要放在一起,时态2008年12月1 that they haven't found answers to【解析】:本题要翻译成英语的定语从句,修饰前面的problems, 时态最好用现在完成时,故可翻译成:(which / that ) they have not come up with / found a solution to.2. What most parents are concerned about【解析】:显然本句缺主语,有两种方法处理:主语从句或名词短语,核心词汇“关心”可以用concern或care about。
本句的汉语部分要翻译成英语中的主语从句,宜用what引导,可翻译成What concerns most parents 或者What most parents are concernedabout。
