Reading Tasks(20’)Passage One:Reading is thought to be a kind of conversation between the reader and the text. The reader puts questions, as it were, to the text and gets answers. In the light of these he puts further questions, and so on. For most of the time this “conversation” goes on below the level of consciousness. At time, however, we become aware of it. This is usually we are running into difficulties, when mismatch is occurring between expectations and meaning. When successful matching is being experienced, our questioning of the text continues at the unconscious level.Different people converse with the text differently. Some stay very close to the words on the page; others take off imaginatively from the words, interpreting, criticizing, analyzing and examining. The former represents a king of comprehension, which is written in the text. The latter represents higher levels of comprehension. The balance between these is important, especially for advanced readers. There is another conversation which from our point of view is equally important, and that is to do not with what is read but with how it is read. We call this a “process”conversation as opposed to a “content” conversation. It is concerned not with meaning but with the strategies we employ in reading. If we are advanced readers our ability to hold a content conversation with a text is usually pretty well developed. Not so our ability to hold a process conversation. It is precisely this kind of conversation that is of importance when we are seeking to develop our reading to meet the new demands being placed upon us by studying at a higher level.31. Reading as a kind of conversation between the reader and the text becomes conscious only when _______________________.A) the reader’s expectations agree with what is said in the text.B.) the reader has trouble understanding what the author says.C) the reader asks questions and gets answers.D) the reader understands a text very well.32. At a lower level of comprehension, readers tend to________________________.A) read a text slowlyB) read without thinking hardC) interpret a text in their own wayD.) concentrate on the meaning of words only.33. A “process” conversation has to do with ________________________.A.) the application of reading strategiesB) matching our expectations with the meaning of a textC) the development of our ability to check the detailsD) determining the main idea of a text.34. According to the passage, it is of great importance for readers at a higherlevel to maintain a balance between __________________________.A) conscious and unconscious levels of comprehensionB) the readers’ expectations and the meaning of a textC.) lower and higher level of comprehensionD) interpreting and criticizing a text35. If we want to develop our reading ability at an advanced level, we should___________.A.) learn to use different approaches in reading different textB) make our reading process more consciousC) pay more attention to the content of a textD) take a critical attitude towards the author’s ideaPassage Two:We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and tocommunicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.36. In the passage the author’s attitude towards “mixed-ability teaching” is ________.A) criticalB) questioningC.) approvingD) objective37. III.仔细阅读(20’)Passage 1Someday a siranger will read your e-mail without your permission or scan the website you’ve visited. Or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits. In fact, it’s likely some of these things have already happened to you. Who would watch you without your permission? It might be a spouse, a girlfriend, a marketing company, a boss, a cop or a criminal. Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you never intended to be seen --- the 21st century equivalent of being caught naked.Psychologists tell us boundaries are healthy, that it’s important to reveal yourself to friends, family and lovers in stages, at appropriate times. But few boundaries remain. The digital bread crumbs ( ) you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to reconstruct who you are, where you are and what you like. In some cases, a simple Google search can reveal what you think. Like it or not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret. The key question is : Does that matter? For many Americans, the answer apparently is “no.”When opinion polls ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it.A survey found an overwhelming pessimism about privacy, with 60 percent of respondents saying they feel their privacy is “slipping away, and that bothers me.”But people say one thing and do another. Only a tiny fraction of Americans change anybehaviors in an effort to preserve their privacy. Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths ( ) to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that can track automobile movements. And few turn down supermarket loyalty cards. Privacy economist Alessandro Acquisti has run a series of tests that reveal people will surrender personal information like Social Security numbers just to get their hands on a pitiful 50-cents-off coupon ( ) .But privacy does matter--- at least sometimes. It’s like health: when you have it, you don’t notice it. Only when it’s gone do you wish you’d done more to protect it.1.What does the author mean by saying “the 21st century equivalent of being caught naked”(Lines 4, Para. 2)?A.People’s personal information is easily accessed without their knowledge.B.In the 21st century people try every means to look into others’ secrets.C.People tend to be more frank with each other in the information age.D.Criminals are easily caught on the spot with advanced technology.2.What would psychologists advise on the relationships between friends?A.Friends should open their hearts to each other.B.Friends should always be faithful to each other.C.There should be a distance even between friends.D.There should be fewer disputes between friends.3.Why does the author say “we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret” (Line 5,Para. 3)?A.Modern society has finally evolved into an open society.B.People leave traces around when using modern technology.C.There are always people who are curious about others’ affairs.D.Many search engines profit by revealing people’s identities.4.What do most Americans do with regard to privacy protection?A.They change behaviors that might disclose their identity.B.They use various loyalty cards for business transactions.C.They rely most and more on electronic devices.D.They talk a lot but hardly do anything about it.5.According to the passage, privacy is like health in that ________.A.people will make every effort to keep itB.its importance is rarely understoodC.it is something that can easily be lostD.people don’t cherish it until they lose it.Passage 2Do you forget to turn off the lights and heaters when you go out of a room? In 2040 it will not matter. They will turn themselves off--- and on again when you return. You will choose the temperature for each room , the lighting and the humidity. A sensor will detect the presence of a human (and, with lich, ignore the dog!) and turn the systems on, and when the humans leave, it will turn them off again. The sensors will work through the central home computer, and they will do much more than just turn the fires and lights on and off for you. They will detect faulty electrical appliances, plugs or switches, isolate them so that they cannot harm anyone, and then warn you that they need repair. They will detect fire and if you are out of the house, the computer will call the faire brigade. It will also call the police should the sensors detect an intruder. This will not be very difficult because the locks on the outside doors will be electronic. You’ll open them using your personal card--- the one you use for shopping--- maybe using a number known only to you.It will be impossible to lose the key, and a house breaker will have to tamper( ) with the lock or with a window. It is not very difficult to make such tampering send a signal to the computer. The computer will be more than a fireman-policeman-servant. It will be an entertainer, and most of your entertainment will come right into your home. It does now, of course, but by 2040 “entertainment” will mean much more. For on e thing, you will be able to take part actively, rather than just waiting.6.The author intends to tell us that in 2040 _________.A.we will live without the lights and heatersB.we will use many more lights and heatersC.lights and heaters will go on and off automaticallyD.there will be no switches of lights and heaters7.Which of the following statements is NOT true?A.You can be taken for an intruder if you tamper with the lock or with a window.B.The sensor will detect fire and put it out.C.Without a computer, the sensor cannot do much.D.The sensor is multi-functional.8.According to the author, in 2040 new technology will _______.A. turn everything into sensorsB. free us from the keys we use todayC. make the locks out of dateD. eliminate all crimes9.Thanks to computers, in 2040 people will ________.A. have no entertainment outsideB. replace TV with computersC. be controlled by computersD. have more fun at home10.The best title for the passage might be “_____________”.A. 统考练习题及答案 大学英语A1

大学英语A1一、阅读理解There will be lots of new aromas(香味)at the Rocky Gap Music Festival this weekend. (这个周末在罗基加普音乐节上将会有很多种新的香味。

)Those aromas will come from cigars - lots of cigars. The organizers of this year's festival decided to have a cigar bar at Rocky Gap after they saw the success of cigar bars at other music festivals. Lee Schwartz is the owner of a cigar store in Cumberland, Maryland. The festival organizers asked him if he would sell his cigars at the Rocky Gap festival. Schwartz thought it was a good idea.A larger number of people are now smoking cigars. There has been a huge increase in the number of people who smoke cigars. According to Schwartz, “the number of cigar smokers has exploded. International cigar sales have increased by 500 percen t in the last three years.”Schwartz said that his store sells 70 different cigar brands. “Three years ago,” he said, “we sold about 150 cigars a month in my shop. Now that they are so popular, we sell about 450 a month.” There is a lot of demand for g ood, imported cigars. Schwartz said he gets his cigars from importers, manufacturers, and sales representatives.“Cigars became very popular a few years ago. But there was not enough supply to meet the demand, because it can take up to five years to pr oduce a good, aged cigar,” Schwartz said. During the last few months, more cigars have become available. They are getting easier to find and buy now. In fact, cigar bars are opening all over the country. Both men and women enjoy cigars. Schwartz said that 75 percent of imported cigar manufacturers are Hispanic. “I found out,” he said, “that to conduct business, I'm going to have to learn a second language.”1.The passage focuses on _____.A.getting rid of smokingB.harms of having cigarsC.the increasing cigar saleD.the industry of cigarettes答案:C2.Why did the organizers decide to have a cigar bar at the Music Festival?A.Cigars were sold well at other music festivals.B.They didn't have any stores to sell cigarettes.C.The state government required them to do so.D.Young people prefer cigars to anything else.答案:A3.The word “explode” in the 2nd paragraph means _____.A.to burst with a violent release of energyB.to increase quickly in a short periodC.to show a violent emotional reactionD.to emerge with violence or big noise答案:B4.The amount of cigars sold in Schwartz's shop now is _____times as many as three years ago.A.3B.4C.5D.6答案:A5.We can infer from the last paragraph that _____.A.Nobody liked cigars a few years agoB.many imported cigars are from IndiaC.women prefer cigarettes to cigarsD.good cigars may take long to produce答案:DIn 1985, the Coca-cola company made the decision to change the formula of its leading soft drink. (1985年,可口可乐公司决定改变他们主要的软饮料的配方)The change was based on the findings of many market studies. These studies had shown that the general response to the new product was good. However, the change of the traditional Coca-cola by New Coke was rejected by the majority of drinkers. In fact, the company had to step back and restart production of the old formula of Coca-cola.The most important reason why New Coke was rejected was the emotional relationship that existed between drinkers and the old soft drink formula. Drinking Coca-cola had become a tradition for many people over its 99 years of existence. The change made by the company was not only in Coke’s formula but also in the traditional values and memories that it represented to the drinkers. “We had taken away more than the product Coca-cola. We had taken away a little part o f them and their past.” The drinkers rejected this “improvement”, because “they believed that Coke stood for traditional value...so they felt betrayed when the product changed completely overnight”.Although a lot of research was done by Coca-cola company, it didn’t show the depth of drinkers’emotion for the product. The studies took many forms, but none of the tests was able to measure the degree of personal and emotional reactions caused by the disappearance of the old, traditional Coca-cola. The weakness of the research was that it was mainly quantitative in form. The result was only numbers that could not show the deep meaning the product had for many people. Yet, dark glasses or not , they find themselves suffering from headaches and watering eyes, and even snowblindness, when exposed to several hours of "snow light" .The United States Army has now determined that glare from snow does not cause snowblindness in troops in a snow-covered country.Rather, a man's eyes frequently find nothing to foucs on in a broad expanse of barrensnow-covered terrain. So his gaze continually shifts and jumps back and forth over the entire landscape in search of tsomething to look at. Finding nothing, hour after hour, the eyes never sotp searching and the eyeballs become sore and the eye muscles ache. Nature offsets this irritation by producing more and fluid which covers the eyeball. The fluid coversthe eyeball in increasing quantity until vision blurs, then is obsured, and the result is total, even though temporary, snowblindness. Experiments led the Army to a simple method of overcoming this problem. Scouts ahead of a main body of troops are trained to shake snow from evergreen bushes, creating a dotted line as they cross completely snow-covered landscape,Even the scouts themselves throw lightweight , dark colored objects ahead on which they too can focus . The men following can then see something.Their gaze is arresteD. Their eyes focus on a bush and having found something to see, stop scouring the snow-blanketed lanscape. By focusing their attention on one object at a time, the men can cross the snow without becoming hopelessly snowblind or lost. The right rests on the assumption that open and free inquiry within a teacher's or researcher's field of study is essential to the pursuit of knowledge and to the performance of his or her proper educational function. At present this right is observed generally in countries inwhich education is regarded as a means not only of pouring in established views but also of enlarging the existing body of knowledge. The concept of academic freedom implies also that a teacher's employment depends primarily on the competence of teachers in their fields rather than on irrelevant considerations such as political or religious beliefs or attachments. The concept and practice of academic freedom, as recognized presently in Western civilization, date roughly from the 17th century. Before the 17th century, intellectual activities at universities were restricted largely by theological considerations, and opinions or conclusions that conflicted with religious doctrines were likely to be condemned as heretical. In the late 17th century the work of such men as the English philosophers John Locke and Thomas Hobbes helped pave the way for academic freedom in the modern sense. Their writings demonstrated the need for unlimited inquiry in the sciences and for a general approach to learning unrestrained by preconceptions of any kind. In the 18th and 19th centuries, universities in Western Europe and the United States enjoyed increasing academic freedom as acceptance of the experimental methods of the sciences became more widespread and as control of institutions by religious denominations became less rigorous. In Britain, however, religious tests for graduation, fellowships, and teaching positions were not abolished until the late 19th century.During the second half of the 20th century academic freedom was recognized broadly in most Western countries. However, violations of the right increased as dictatorship emerged in various countries, notably in Germany, Italy, and Russia. Educators in Italy were forced to pledge support to the Fascist regime. Similar restrictions, including the teaching of racist theories in some fields, were enforced in German universities under National Socialism. Violations of academic freedom also occurred in the United States in the 20th century. A notable example was the Scopes trial, held in Dayton, Tennessee, in 1925. A high school teacher was accused and convicted of violating a state law that forbade the teaching of the theory of evolution in the public schools. This legislation was abolished in 1967.In the early 1950s, largely because of congressional investigations of communism in the U. S., many institutions of higher learning adopted regulations requiring loyalty oaths from university teachers. Some of these oaths, insofar as they were required only of teachers, were declared unconstitutional in some state courts. All professional associations of teachers and administrators, including the National Education Association, the American Association of Colleges, and the American Association of University Professors, are opposed to special loyalty oaths and to all violations of academic freedom. The 1960s and early 1970s were marked by protest and violence on college campuses over United States involvement in the war in Vietnam. In some places professors were dismissed or arrested for protesting American participation in the war. This turmoil reached a tragic climax in 1970 with the killing of several students during campus demonstrations. In the long run, however, these disturbances led to a broad recognition of the legitimate concerns of students about the quality of higher education, and of the responsibility of universities, rather than the public or the government, to maintain essentialacademic order.By 1973, when U. S. troops were withdrawn from Vietnam, a general growth in higher education was under way. Significant increase in enrollments and expansion of faculties, as well as a broadening of the makeup of both student and faculty populations, contributed to a vast enrichment of the academic curriculum, to increasing faculty control over the content of programs, and, overall, to the enhancement of the freedom to teach and to learn in colleges and universities.Beginning in the early 1970s in the United States(and somewhat later in other countries such as Canada and the United Kingdom, however, institutions of higher education were faced with serious financial problems which also harmed academic freedom. For example, the rise in irregular faculty appointments, intended to save money, created a virtual underclass of teachers lacking the employment security generally considered necessary for the exercise of academic freedom.Threats to and violations of academic freedom continued in the 1980s. The U. S. government, in the name of national security, imposed severe restraints on the publication of research results. The influence of resurgent religious conservatism was felt in some areas in effort to introduce religious teachings in elementary and secondary schools, and in limits on free expression at church-affiliated colleges and universities.21.
