She began studying medical reports in the library and found an article in a magazine about a well-known heart surgeon, Dr. Michael DeBakey, of Houston, Texas. He had saved the life of someone with the same disease. The article said his fees were very high; Aunt Edith couldn’t possibly pay them. But could he tell her of someone whose fees she could pay?So Aunt Edith wrote to him. She simply listed her reasons for wanting live: her three children, who would be on their own in three or four more years, her little-girl dream of traveling and seeing the world. Wide spread use of written language would not have been possible without some cheap and practical material to write on. The invention of paper meant that more people could be educated because more books could be printed and distributed. Together with the printing press, paper provided an extremely important way to communicate knowledge. How much paper do you use every year? Probably you cannot answer that question quickly. In 1900 the world's use of paper was about one kilogram for each person a year. Now some countries use as much as 50 kilograms of paper for each person a year. Countries like the United States, England and Sweden use more paper than other countries.Paper, like many other things that we use today, was first made in China. In Egypt and the West, paper was not very commonly used before the year 1400. The Egyptians wrote on a kind of material made of a water plant. Europeans used parchment for many hundreds of years. Parchment was very strong; it was made from the skin of certain young animals. We have learnt of the most important facts of European history from records that were kept on parchment.1、What's the meaning for the word "parchment"?【B】A、The skin of young animals.B、A kind of paper made from the skin of certain young animals.C、The paper used by European countries.D、The paper of Egypt.2、Which of the following is not mentioned about the invention of paper?【A】A、More jobs could be provided than before.B、More people could be educated than before.C、More books could be printed and distributed.D、More ways could be used to exchange knowledge.3、When did the Egyptians begin to use paper widely?【A】A、Around 1400.B、Around 1900.C、Around 400.D、Around 900.4、Which of the following countries uses more paper for each person ayear?【B】A、China.B、Sweden.C、Egypt.D、Japan.5、What is the main idea of this short talk?【C】A、More and more paper is being consumed nowadays.B、Paper enables people to receive education more easily.C、The invention of paper is of great significance to man.D、Paper contributes a lot to the keeping of historical records.Passage 2、DDADCBritain and France are separated by the English Channel, a body of water that can be crossed in as few as 20 minutes. But the cultures of the two countries sometimes seem to be miles apart.Last Thursday Britain and France celebrated the 100th anniversary (周年纪念) of the signing of a friendship agreement called the Entente Cordiality. The agreement marked a new beginning for the countries following centuries of wars and love-hate partnership. But their relationship has been ups and downs over the past century. Just last year, there were fierce disagreements over the Iraq war―which British Prime Minister Tony Blair supported despite French President Jacques Chirac speaking out against it. This discomfort is expressed in Blair and Chirac's body language at international meetings. While the French leader often greets German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder with a hug (拥抱), Blair just receives a handshake. However, some political experts say the war in Iraq could in fact have helped ties. The history of divisions may well be because of the very different ways in which the two sides see the world. But this doesn't stop 12 million Britons taking holidays in France each year. However, only 3 million French come in the opposite direction. Surveys (调查) show that most French people feel closer to the Germans than they do to the British. And the research carried out in Britain has found that only a third of the population believes the French can be trusted. Perhaps this bad feeling comes because the British dislike France's close relationship with Germany, or because the French are not happy with Britain's close links with the US.Whatever the answer is, as both sides celebrate 100 years of "doubtful friendship", they are at least able to make jokes about each other. Here's one: What's the best thing about Britain's relationship with France? The English Channel.1、For centuries, the relationship between Britain and France is________.【D】A、friendlyB、impoliteC、brotherlyDa mixture of love and hate2、The war in Iraq does to the relationship between France and Britain.【D】A、goodB、harmC、neither good nor harmD、both good and harm3、The British are not so friendly to and the French are not so friendly to________.【A】A、Germany; AmericaB、America; GermanyC、Germany; GermanyD、America; America4、 are more interested in having holidays in______.【D】A、American people... He has office hours every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. You can sign up for the program with him and begin the tutoring next week. As she was thinking all about this, she suddenly heard the airline employee asking her to pick up her luggage and put it on the scales (称). Maria pulled and pulled. City people appear always to be hurrying to get where they are going restlessly, seeking attention in a store, and elbowing others as they try to complete their errands(任务). Racing through daytime meals is part of the pace of life in this country. Working time is considered precious. Others in public eating places are waiting for you to finish so that they too can be served and get back to work within the time allowed. Each person hurries to make room for the next person. If you don't, waiters will hurry you.You also find drivers will be abrupt and that people will push past you. You will miss smiles, brief conversations, and small courtesies with strangers. Don't take it personally. This is because people value time highly, and they resent someone else "wasting" it beyond a certain courtesy point. The view of time affects the importance we attach to patience. In the American system of values, patience is not a high priority. Many of us have what might be called "a short fuse." We begin to move restlessly about if we feel time is slipping away without some return―be this in terms of pleasure, work value, or rest. Those coming from lands where time is looked upon differently may find this matter of pace to be one of their most difficult adjustments in both business and daily life. Many newcomers to the States will miss the opening courtesy of a business call, for example, they will miss the ritual socializing that goes with a welcoming cup of tea or coffee that may be traditional in their own country. They may miss leisurely business chats in a cafe or coffeehouse. Normally, Americans do not assess their visitors in such relaxed surroundings over prolonged small talks. We seek out evidence of past performance rather than evaluate a business colleague through social courtesies. Since we generally assess and probe professionally rather than socially, we start talking business very quickly.1、Which of the following statements is wrong?【D】A、Americans seem to be always under pressure.B、Americans attach less importance to patience.C、Americans don't care much about ritual socializing.D、Americans are impolite to their business colleagues.2、In the fourth paragraph, "a high priority" means_________.【B】A、a less important thingB、a first concernC、a good businessD、an attractive gift3、Americans evaluate a business colleague_________.【D】A、through social courtesyB、through prolonged business talksC、by establishing business relationsD、by learning about their past performance4、This passage mainly talks about___________.【A】A、how Americans treasure their timeB、how busy Americans are every dayC、how Americans do business with foreignersD、what American way of life is like5、We can infer from the passage that the author's tone in writing is__________.【C】A、criticalB、ironicalC、praisefulD、objectivePassage 6、CBDDDThe French Revolution broke out in 1789. At the time France was in a crisis. The government was badly run and people's lives were miserable. King Louis XIV tried to control the national parliament and raise more taxes. But his effort failed. He ordered his troops to Versailles. The people thought that Louis intended to put down the Revolution by force. On July 14,1789,they stormed and took the Bastille, where political prisoners were kept. Ever since that day, July 14 has been the French National Day. Louis tried to flee the country in 1792, to get support from Austria and Prussia. However, he was caught and put in prison. In September 1792,the monarchy was abolished. In the same year,Louis was executed. A few months later his wife, Marie, also had her head cut off. The Revolution of Franc had frightened the other kings of Europe. Armies from Austria and Prussia began to march against France. The French raised republican armies to defend the nation. The Revolution went through a period of terror. Thousands of people lost their lives. In the end, power passed to Napoleon Bonaparte. What's this passage about?FranceKing LouisThe French RevolutionEurope.Which did not happen in 1789 ?The French Revolution broke outThe national economy was developing rapidly. The government wasn't well run.King Louis XIV was in power.Where were the political prisoners kept?In Versailles. In AustriaIn PrussiaIn BastilleWhat does the underlined word “abolished” mean?Put off.Established.United.EndedWhat was NOT the effect of the Revolution?July 14 has become the French National Day.It brought some impact on the other European kings.Louis’s wife,Marie was killed. The king tried to control the national parliament试题分值:50.0得分:[10, 10, 10, 10, 10]提示:四、完形填空Passage 1、AECBD CDBEAMany students find the experience of attending university lectures to bea confusing and frustrating experience. How can English teachers accelerate the language learning of their students? One way is to teach students how to learn more effectively and efficiently. Learning strategies are "Procedures or techniquesthat learners can use to facilitate a learning task." Instructing students of English in learning strategies can help them become better learners. In addition, skill in using learning strategies assists students in becoming independent, confident learners. Finally, students become more motivated as they begin to understand the relationship between their use of strategies and success in learning English. Students need to develop an awareness of the learningprocess and strategies that lead to success. Students who reflect on their own thinking are more likely to engage in planning how to proceed with a learning task, monitoring their own performance on an ongoing basis, finding solutions to problems encountered, and evaluating themselves upon task completion. These activities may be difficult for students accustomed to having a teacher who solves all their learning problems and is the sole judge of their progress. Teachers need to encourage students to rely more on themselves. Because learning strategies are mental processes with few observable manifestations, teachers need to find ways to make the strategies as concrete as possible. When students are able to use the strategies their teachers have taught them, and to do so without prompting, then they need to explore new strategies, new applications, and new opportunities for self-regulated learning.(1). Better learning strategies can make language learning more( ).A. funB.interestingC.efficientD.exciting(2). Students learn learning strategies from the teachers only.B.Learning strategies are completely unobservable.C.Students need to explore new learning strategies for themselves.Teachers are the sole judges of students’ progress.2.Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made use of various forms of communication. Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When there is a language barrier, communication is accomplished through sign language in which motions stand for letters, words and ideas. Tourists, the deaf, and the mute have had to resort to this form of expression. Many of these symbols of whole words are very picturesque and exact and can be used Internationally; spelling, however, cannot. Body language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or unintentionally. A wink can be a way of flirting or indicating that the party is only joking. A nod signifies approval, while shaking the head indicates a negative reaction. Other forms of nonlinguistic language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with the fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and smokesignals. Road maps and picture signs also guide, warn, and instruct people. While verbalization is the most common form of language, other systems and techniques also express human thoughts andfeelings.(1). Which of the following best summarizes this passage? ( )A. When language is a barrier, people will find other forms of communication.B.Everybody uses only one form of communication.Nonlinguistic language is invaluable to foreigners.D. Although other forms of communication exist, verbalization is the fastest.(2). Which of the following statements is not true according to the passage? ( )A. There are many forms of communication in existence today.B.Verbalization is the most common form of communication.C.The deaf and mute do not need sign language for communication.D. Ideas and thoughts can be transmitted by language.(3). Which form other than oral speech would be most commonly used among blind people? ( )A. Picture signs.B.Braille.C.Body language.D. Signal flags.(4). How many different forms of communication are mentioned here? ( )A. 2 — 4B.5 — 7C.8 — 10D. Over 10(5). Sign language is said to be very picturesque and exact and canbe used internationally as it doesn''t represent ( )A. spellingsB.whole wordsC.ideasD. feelings3. Exercise is one of the few factors with a positive role in long-term maintenance of body weight. Unfortunately, that message has not gotten through to the average American, who would rather tryswitching to “light” beer and low-calorie bread than increase physical exertion. Doctors found that less than one-fourth of overweight adults who were trying to reduce weight said they were combining exercise with their diet.Still, exercise’s supporting role in weight reduction is necessary.A study confirmed that those who dieted without exercise regained almost all their old weight, while those who worked exercise intotheir daily routine maintained their new weight. If you have been sedentary and decide to start walking one mile a day, the added exercise could burn an extra 100 calories daily. In a year’ time, assuming no increase in food intake, you couldlost ten pounds. They opened a popular restaurant inCalifornia which sold food that was easy to prepare and serve quickly. Hamburgers, French fries, and cold drinks were the main food there. Kroc opened similar eating places under the same name, "McDonald''s", and they were an instant success. He later took over the company, and today it is one of the most famous and successful "fast-food" in America and the world. Why was his idea so successful? Probably the most important reasonwas that this timing was right. In the 1950s, most married women stayed home to keep house and take care of their children. In the1960s, many women returned to the workplace. This meant they had less time and energy to do housework and preparation of meals, so they relied more on "TV dinners" and fast-food restaurant. Single parents also have little time to spend in the kitchen. People living alone also depend on this type of food, since cooking for one is often more trouble than it is worth.Fast-food is not part of the diet of all Americans. Another trend of the 1960s, sometimes called the back-to-nature movement influenced many people to avoid food that was packaged or processed. The preference for natural foods continues to this day. From the successof Raymond Kroc''s fast-food business, we can say that social economic trends influence where and what we eat.(1). Americans had the "movements" ( ).A. in 1955B.in 1950sC.in 1960sD.both in 1950s and 1960s(4). Why was McDonald''s idea so successful? It was mainly because ( ).A. people living alone depend on fast foodB. single parents have little time to spend in the kitchenC. many women returned to the workplace in 1960sD. his timing was right(5). Although the practice of the old Roman religion disappeared many centuries ago, some traces of the Roman gods are still present in our daily vocabulary. The names of the Roman sun god, Sol, and the moon goddess, Luna, are used frequently in our languageThe word solar describes anything pertaining to the sun, and lunar anything pertaining to the moon. For example, the sun and the planets circling it are called the solar system. The period of time in which the earth circles the sun once is a solar year. The moon takes one lunar month to circle the earth. A lunar year of twelve lunar months is eleven days shorter than a solar year.In some cases our language shows how these heavenly bodies affect us directly. A room or place for sunbathing is often called a solarium. We get our word parasol from the Italian word meaning "a guard against the sun." For many centuries it was believed that the moon affected people who were mentally ill. For this reason persons who were mentally ill were often referred to as lunatics.(1). In comparison with the solar year, the lunar year is__A. twice as longB. the same lengthC. C shorterD. a few days longer(2).
