Charles Dickens (1812-1870),
One of Dickens’ most enduringly popular stories published 1837-8. central theme: the hardship faced by the dispossessed and those of the outside of rough society.
At the end all the bad men received punishment. When Oliver visited Fagin in prison, I was moved by his so kind behavior. When he was a little boy, he suffered from other children could not bear. No matter how hard the situation was, he still held good hope and kindness in his heart. Therefore, he got help from kind-hearted people who knew his life experience and got happiness. I am moved by this inspirational story and this brave, kind little boy.

A young prostitute and one of Fagin’s former child pickpockets. Nancy is also Bill Sikes’s lover. Her love for Sikes and her sense of moral decency come into conflict when Sikes abuses Oliver. Despite her criminal lifestyle, she is among the noblest characters in the novel. In the end, she gives her life for Oliver when Sikes murders her for revealing Monks’s plots.
Oliver’s mother has been found very sick in the street, and she gives birth to Oliver just before she dies. Oliver himself is born in a workhouse and treated cruelly. The story follows Oliver as he escapes the workhouse and runs away to London. There, he is picked up by “Artful Dodger”, who’s one of the Jew Fagin’s gang of boys and taken to Fagin’s den in the London slums. Since then, he was trained to be a pickpocket.

he escaped from the workhouse and ran away to London. Here he received an “education” in villainy(犯罪行为) from the criminal gang(一伙) of Fagin that includes the brutal(无情的) thief Bill Sikes, the famous artful Dodger and Nancy. Oliver was rescued by the intervention(介入) of a benefactor - Mr Brownlow - but the mysterious Monks(神秘的和尚) got the boy kidnapped(绑架) to the gang again. Finally Nancy was murdered viciously by Sikes after she has thrown light upon some related facts. The story closed happily and with justice for the cruel Monks who had hidden the truth of Oliver parentage out of malice(恶意).
Oliver suffered the cruelty of hypocritical [ˌhɪpə'krɪtɪkl](伪善的) workhouse officials, prejudiced [ˈpredʒədɪst] (偏见的)judges, and hardened criminals(惯 犯). Throughout the novel, his virtuous [ˈvɜ:tʃuəs](品行端正的) nature survived the unbelievable misery of his situation.
