1.The federal government has a graduated income tax, that is,the percentage of the tax increases as a person's income increases.(Para 3)联邦政府实行累进收入所得税制,也就是说,税率随个人收入的增加而增加。

It uses its trunk in many ways. It pulls leaves off trees with its trunk and then puts them into its mouth. It can even use its trunk to pull up trees when it wants to make a path through the jungle. It also uses its trunk to get water. The trunk can hold a lot of water, as an elephant needs to drink more than three hundred pints of water everyday. When an elephant is angry, its tusks can be very dangerous. But actually the umbrella was not invented as protection against rain. Its first use was as a shade against the sun. Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, way back in the eleventh century B. C.We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its use: it became a symbol of honor and authority. In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by royalty or by those in high office. In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. And the umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece. But it is believed that the first persons in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans.During the Middle Ages, the use of the umbrella practically disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century. And again it was considered a symbol of power and authority. By 1680, the umbrella appeared in France, and later on in England.By the eighteenth century, the umbrella was used against rain throughout most of Europe. Umbrellas have not changed much in style during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. It wasn't until the twentieth century that women's umbrellas began to be made, in a whole variety of colors.I. Listen to the passage and choose the best answer to each of the questions you hear1. Some scientists think that one day animals may be trained to do a number of simple jobs that are now done by human beings. They pointed out that at a circus for example, we may see elephants, monkeys, dogs and other animals doing quite skillful things. Perhaps you have seen them on the television or in a film. If you watch closely, you may notice that the trainer always gives the animal a piece of sugar or fruit as a reward. The scientists say that many different animals may be trained to do a number of simple jobs if they know they will get a reward for doing them.Of course, as we know, dogs can be used to guard a house. But it may be possible to train animals to work in factories. In Russia, for example, pigeons, which are birds with good eyesight, are being used to watch out for faults in small steel balls that are being made in one factory. When a pigeon sees a ball that looks different from the others, it touches a steel plate with its mouth. This tams on a light to warn the people in the factory. At the same time a few seeds are given to the pigeon as a reward. It takes three or five weeks to train a pigeon to do this and one pigeon can inspect 3,000 to 4,000 balls in an hour.I. Listen to the passage and choose the best answer to each of the questions you hearl. What do scientists think about some animals? ( A )2. What can we see animals do at a circus? ( B )3. The first and greatest of them is gravity. If you let your pencil drop to the floor, you can see gravity in action. Everything is down to the earth by magnetic force. A rocket must go at least 2,500 miles an hour to take anyone beyond the gravity of the earth into space.Another problem is the strain that a person is subjected to when a rocket leaves the ground. Anything that is not moving tends to resist movement. As the rocket leaves the ground, it pushes upward violently, and the person in the front of the rocket is pushed back against the chair. During this thrust, gravity exerts a force on the body equal to nine times its normal force.Once out of the earth's gravity an astronaut is affected by still another problem--weightlessness. Here, if a pencil drops, it doesn't fall. If a glass of water is turned upside down, the water will notfall out. People who are used to gravity don't expect things to have weightless conditions. Recent long flights have shown that the body needs special exercise in the spaceship.Listen to the passage and answer the following questions.1. What problem would an astronaut meet with as the rocket leaves the ground?Gravity.2. When would gravity exert its strongest force on the body? When the rocket is leaving the ground.3. In space things do not fall. Why?Due to weightlessness.4. The body needs special exercise in the spaceship. Why?Because they are not used to the special condition in the spaceship5. Can you give a title for this passage?Space Travel ProblemsPassage T woA New Kind of SchoolIn the 1600s America was colonial. In the northern colonies, each town usually appointed a schoolmaster to teach the children of the town. In the middle colonies, most schools were run by churches. In the southern colonies, there were few schools. That was partly because there were few towns. In colonial America the school had only one room. Children of all ages learned together in the same room. The main subjects taught were reading and writing. Sometimes arithmetic was taught, too. In the 170"0s, a new kind of school was started in some towns. The new schools were called academies or English schools. Instead of Latin grammar, the students learned English grammar. That is why the schools were called English schools. Because they were private schools, the students had to pay to attend them. At the time of the Revolution, many people saw the need for better schools. Some people began to think that all children should go to school--not just the wealthy ones. State governments began to provide more money for schools. For example, in each new western state, a certain amount of land was set aside. The land was used to provide money for education in the state, and students would not have to pay to attend schools. Listen to the passage and choose the best answer to each of the questions you hear1. Why did southern colonial America have few schools? ( C )2. What subjects were taught in colonial American schools? ( D )3. Why did the students have to pay to attend English schools? ( D )4. How did each new western state provide money for education? ( D )5. Why were the new schools called English schools? ( B )Passage ThreeRural Unemployment Becomes Urban UnemploymentIn many places in the world today, the poor are getting poorer while the rich are getting richer, and the programs of development planning and foreign aid appear to be unable to reverse this trend. Nearly all the developing counties have a modern part, where the patterns of living and working are similar to those in developed countries. But they also have a non-modern part, where the patterns of living and working are not only unsatisfactory, but in many cases are even getting worse. What is the typical condition of the poor in developing countries? Their work opportunities areso limited that they cannot work their way out of their situation. They are underemployed, or totally unemployed. Some of them have land, but often too little land. Many have no land, and no prospect of ever getting any. There is no hope for them in the rural areas, and so they drift into the big cities. But there is no work for them in the big cities, of course no housing. All the same, they flock into the cities because their chances of finding some work appear to be greater there than in the villages. Rural unemployment, then becomes urban unemploymentListen to the passage and answer the following questions.1. What is the trend of the world today? In many places in the world today, the poor are getting poorer while the rich are gettingricher.2. What are the patterns of living and working in developing countries?I n developing countries the patterns of living and working are not only unsatisfactory, but inmany cases are even getting worse.3. What is the typical condition of the poor in developing countries?Their work opportunities are so limited that they cannot work their way out of their situation.4. Why did they drift into cities? Some of them have land, but often too little land. Many have no land, and no prospect of ever getting any. There is no hope for them in the rural areas, and so they drift into the big cities.5. What is their life in cities? In cities there is no work for them and also no housing. Rural unemployment becomes urban unemployment.III.AA Narrow EscapeOne night when Mr. Robinson was asleep, he was woken up by some strange noise outside his house. “Thieves," he thought. Jumping out of bed, he took his gun and hurried to the bedroom window. The room was not shining and the night was rather dark. But he could see a white shape. It looked like a man in the garden. He pointed his gun at it, fired and went back to bed. Early in the morning, he went down to the garden. His shirt was hanging from a tree. He had washed it the day before and hung it on the tree to dry. It had a hole right through the middle. Mr. Robinson was nearly frightened out of his life when he saw it and began to tremble. His neighbour arrived at that moment. "How are you today, Mr. Robinson?" he asked in an anxious voice. "Y ou don't look well.""I'm all right, thank you," said Mr. Robinson. "But I'm lucky to be alive. Y ou see that shirt there?""Y es?" said the neighbour."If I'd been wearing that shirt last night," said Mr. Robinson, "I'd be a dead man now."。

Directions: Read the following True” or “False”?
Work Is a Service
Young people may ask themselves questions like this when they apply for employment: “What are my working hours? What are my extra benefits besides wages? What holidays will I have off? Will I have enough time to hang out with my friends or pursue my hobbies?” With questions like these, however, when we focus on our leisure hours instead of our working hours, we may be prevented from seeing a much greater opportunity. Good work attitudes, habits, and skills are learned through successful work experiences. Let me illustrate. On the ranch (牧场) where I grew up, the cows had to be milked before dawn every day. When I was just 10 years old, I would enter our barnyard where there were about 10 to 12 cows waiting for me to let them into the milking barn. My mother and father used to say out loud to the cows, “Good morning. It’s good to see you!” I have to confess that as a young boy I didn’t feel quite the same way toward the cows. After each cow was milked, I poured the milk from the pail into a 10-gallon can. Each can weighed about 80 pounds when full. It made me stretch my young muscles as I carried them to the road for the dairy to pick up. My father and mother quite frequently helped me with milking the cows. I remember my father and mother continued to milk until they were in their late 80s. But Father didn’t milk the cows because he had to; he milked them because they needed to be milked. There is a difference. To him, these animals were not just cows—they were Big Blackie and Bossie and Sally and Betsy. He wanted them to be content. He always said that contented cows give good milk. To my father, milking cows—as unsophisticated as it may seem—was not an extra burden; it was an opportunity. Milking was not a job for him; it was a service. This philosophy is something that helped me as I grew up. It helped me to find out that all honest work is honorable. Within a few years I realized that routinely performing these chores actually began to give me a sense of confidence and empowerment. I took pride in my work. We control our own attitudes towards work. Self-confidence and empowerment can serve us well—in the classroom or on Wall Street. Instead of thinking of our daily work as an extra burden, we should think of it as an opportunity. That’s just the way my father taught me to feel about the cows. Those teachings have remained with me all my life, and I continue to visit the ranch and its memories as often as possible.
