I'll just ramble on about something......篇2My Weekend English HomeworkLast weekend, my mom and dad gave me some English homework from this thing called the "Yellow Crane Little Homework" books. I don't really know what a yellow crane is, but I think it's a bird? Anyway, these books are from Beijing Normal University and they have lots of English practice for kids like me.The first part was listening practice. We had to listen to a story about a brother and sister arguing over video games. The boy wanted to play his racing video game but the girl wanted to play her cooking game instead. They couldn't agree on which one to play first. I thought it was a funny story because my older brother and I fight over the TV and video games too!After the listening, there were some questions to answer about the story. Things like "What did the boy want to play?" and "Why did the brother and sister argue?" I got most of them right by paying close attention when I listened. Listening is one of the hardest parts of learning English for me.Then there was a section on vocabulary words. We had to match the words to their definitions and also use them in sentences we made up ourselves. Some of the words were"racket" and "quarrel" which were in the listening story. There were other new words too like "humble" and "nurture." Using the new vocabulary words in my own sentences really helps me remember them.Next was a grammar practice section about verb tenses. But practicing it over and over in these homework exercises is helping me get better.After that was a section on writing. We had to take one of the vocabulary words like "humble" and write a few sentences using that word to describe ourselves or someone we know. She always says we should appreciate the simple things in life.The last part was my favorite - reading comprehension! The passage was about a girl who went camping with her family for the first time. There were some challenging words like "campsite" and "marshmallows" that I had to ask my dad about. But the story was really fun and I could visualize them roasting marshmallows over the campfire.The questions asked things like "What activities did the family do at the campsite?" and "How did the girl feel about camping in the beginning versus at the end?" I love reading little stories like this because they use more conversational English. This weekend I had to do my English homework from the Huanggang Famous Practice Books. I don't really like English, but my mom says it's super important if I want to get into a good middle school and high school later on. She thinks these practice books will really help me.The first part was vocabulary practice. We had a list of 50 new words to learn! Some of them were pretty easy like "apple", "book", and "play". But others were really hard and had all these syllables that made my tongue get twisted up. Words like "extraordinary" and "simultaneously". How am I supposed to remember how to spell those?!I tried making flashcards with the English word on one side and the Chinese meaning on the other side. I quizzed myself over and over, repeating the words out loud. My little brother made fun of me for talking to myself, but I don't care. Memorization is the only way for me to learn these crazy vocabulary words.Next up was a reading comprehension passage. This one was about a boy named Jack who went camping with his family. They hiked in the forest, went swimming in a lake, and cooked hotdogs over a campfire. The passage seemed simple enough,but then there were pages and pages of comprehension questions at the end! Questions like "What activities did Jack's family do at the campground?" and "Describe the setting of the story in your own words."I hate questions like that. It's not enough to just understand the main idea. You have to remember all the tiny details too! I spent so long flipping back through the passage, looking for evidence to support my answers. My dad says finding evidence is good practice for life though. He says I'll need skills like closing reading and critical thinking later on.The grammar section was by far the hardest part. We learned about present perfect tense, talking about things that started in the past and are still happening now. Like "I have studied English for three years." The practice exercises had us re-writing all these sentences, changing the verbs to present perfect form.Ugh, I mixed up so many of the examples! Is it "I have gone" or "I went"? Why are there so many irregular verb forms to memorize in English? No wonder English is one of the hardest languages to learn. At least in Chinese, most verbs follow really consistent rules. English is just exceptional after exceptional case!Despite all my struggles, I actually kind of liked the writing prompt at the end. It said "Write a short story about your most exciting experience on summer vacation." I decided to write about the time my family went to Yangshuo and I tried outdoor rock climbing for the first time. I worked really hard coming up with descriptive adjectives and using transition words like "Moreover" and "Subsequently".My teacher always tells me my writing is good, but I need to work on varying my sentence structures more. So for this assignment, I really focused on making some sentences longer and more complex. Like "Despite feeling uncertain at first, I progressively became more confident and daring with each ascending step, until I had successfully scaled one of the highest rock faces by the river bank." Doesn't that sound much better than "I climbed a tall rock"?Well, there you have it diary. Another weekend marathon of English homework...in the books!
