大夏大学校徽1924年夏，王伯群捐资创办大夏大学，教授们请王伯群出面组织校董会，聘请马君武、吴稚晖、 王毓祥等7人为校董。7月成立筹备处，租用宜昌路115号为临时宿舍，劳勃生路启和里全部房屋为师生员工宿舍， 小沙渡路201号（今西康路）为校本部。9月20日在槟榔路潘家花园举行第一次开学典礼，9月22日正式上课；当 时有学生229人，多为原厦大离校学生。10月22日，大夏大学董事会正式成立，公推王伯群为主席董事（后改称 董事长），马君武为校长。
周尚得到了旅港澳的校董校友的鼓励和支持，因而下定决心，历经周折，得到了教育署长沙立斯和港督杨慕 琦的批准，于1940年夏天“将大夏大学的校牌耸立在圣士提女子中学门前了”。根据周尚的叙述，当时上课时间 则是利用女中下课后的下午三时到晚间十时，而知名学者戴望舒等常前来义务授课。
周尚提到的“圣士提女子中学”通常译为圣士提反女子中学，是香港一所著名的女子中学，1906年由英国圣 公会海外传道会建立，1924年搬迁至校址列提顿道2号。
