Why Dogs Bury Their Favorite BonesYou may find it crazy that your dog buries his favorite bone or chew toy, only to dig it up a day or two later, but there is actually a reason behind it-it is simply in their nature. For thousands of years, dogs have buried their bones. The practice itself started long before dogs were even pets when they had to bury bones to survive. When dogs lived in the wild, sometimes food was scarce. If they were able to find food dogs became very protective of it. Sometimes they would have more bones than they could eat for one meal. To keep other dogs and animals from stealing their bones, dogs would bury them in the ground. When it was time for the next meal, they would dig up their bones and enjoy them again. This would continue until the bones were gone.Even though most dogs have plenty of food to eat today ,their instincts still tell them to bury their bones and favorite toys. They do this to keep other dogs and animals from stealing them, just like their ancestors did. Some dogs keep at least two bones buried at once. When they want to dig up one, they will bury one more. This may leave a backyard full of holes and bones. How do dogs decide where to bury their bones? A dog cannot bury a bone just anywhere. He must first find the perfect spot. This involves using his nose to find a spot that is free from other dogs and animals. Often it is near a tree or a large rock, but it could be anywhere in the yard. Once the dog finds the perfect spot, he uses his front paws to dig a hole drops the bone in and covers up the hole to protect his treasure.1. Booking Online and Saving the EnvironmentWhen you are looking to book aholiday, it is unlikely that you will think about how green your booking decision is, but it is something that you should think about. By green" we mean the impact on the environment. When looking to book a holiday, you will probably find that you are faced with two main decisions. The first is to go into atravel agency, pick up brochures (宣传册), read through them and go back with just one and book with the travel agents directly or over the phone. The second is to go onto the Internet. The Internet holds many advantages over the travel agencies. The main one is convenience. You can go online to lookat holidays at any timeof the day. The travel agents, however, areusually very busy at times when peoplecan actually go, i.e. lunch hours or at the weekend. You could use the telephone, but you wouldn't be able tosee the pictures or the details of the holidays, So you would probably be sent a brochure anyway. There are websites on the Internet that make shopping forholiday deals much easier. These websites are known as price comparison websites. They search through lotsof different tour operators, and the results are displayed on one page, from which you can choose.Compared with the travel agencies, bookingonline is greener. The piles of brochures are definitely not green, and the amount of unnecessary paper used can't be good for the environment. In the days ofthe Internet, there is really no need for such a large amountof paper to be wasted. So booking online will not only save you time and effort, it willdo a little bit towards saving the environment, too!1. When planning holidays, few people will think about being green.A. TrueB. 《英语(二)》作业题(三)(课程代码:00015)一、阅读判断题Using Music to Change Your MoodEveryone knows that listening to music when feeling bad can provide a relief. Music can also reduce stress, make depression more bearable and help you relax. All the benefits of music can only be got if the listener enjoys the music he is listening to. If the listener dislikes the music or finds it boring, it will have a negative effect on him instead of a positive one.Now let's examine what most of us do when it comes to listening to music. We usually just listen to a play list and allow a program to randomly (任意的) select the songs we are going to listen to.This is where the problem lies. What if you liked the first song but found the second one boring? What if the third one was a motivating song while the fourth didn't suit your emotions? What do you think the result will be?What you'll have is an emotional mess! The first song will lift your mood a little. The second will make you a little bored. The third will motivate you and then the fourth will put you down. In the end you' 11 end up feeling worse than before.I strongly recommend dividing your play list into different small lists. For example, a list for relaxation, a list for motivation and so on. Another very important thing you must do is to get rid of all of the old music that you are bored of. Besides, don't listen to songs with negative words or messages. The music you listen to can delay your recovery from breakups (分手) by months and months! People who listen to romantic songs after breakups recover 10 times slower than those who don't. So be careful with your play list if you want to recover faster.1. Being "Cool" in Middle SchoolA new study shows that gentle and quiet kids in middle school will grow up to rule. Or, at least, they'll live healthier and more productive lives than the "cool" kids will. The study looked at 13-year-olds who acted old for their age by having "cool" behavior, such as early romantic relationships. They were seen as "cool" and popular kids. But as they grew up, things changed. The study found that these kids tended to have problems with drugs and relationships by their early 20s.Their behavior was no longer linked with popularity. Instead, they were thought to be less socially skilled by their peers. Besides, the average "cool" kids, by age 22, did more poorly than the average kids in the study. They had a 45 percent greater rate of problems due to drugs and alcohol. They also had a 22 percent greater rate of criminal behavior. The study also found that these kids failed to develop important life skills. They spent so much time trying to seem cool. They didn't develop the skills needed for meaningful friendships. The study followed 86 male and 98 female middle school students for a 10-year period. It has some surprising findings. In particular, the study notes that the so-called "cool" behavior is a predictor (预示)of future problems with drugs and alcohol. In fact, it is a better predictor than drug and alcohol use in middle school. However, one conclusion of the study is welcome. Researchers said that parents shouldn't worry too much if their kids don't seem that popular. If a kid prefers to spend Saturday nights at home watching a movie or reading instead of going out with friends, that is not a cause for concern. Many "uncool" kids, they said, do much better later on than the popular kids do.1.Gentle kids are less healthy when they grow up.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given2."Cool" kids try to imitate adult behavior.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given3.Romantic relationships seem cool to some teenagers.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given4."Uncool" kids are more likely to commit crimes.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given5."Cool" kids have better life skills than "uncool" kids.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given6."Uncool" kids spend most of their time studying.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given7.The study followed the students for a decade.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given8."Cool" kids marry earlier than "uncool" kids.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given9.Parents needn't worry if their kids are "uncool".A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given10."Cool" kids remain popular all their lives.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given第二部分:阅读选择(第11〜15题,每题2分,共10分)阅读下面短文,请从短文所给各题的4个选项(A、B、C、D)中选出1个最佳选项,并在答题卡相应位置上将该项涂黑。

(30 points, 2 points for each)Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. The economic costs of noise to society are several. Airports are currently operating at less than capacity because of noise regulations which restrict their hours of operation. For instance, at Washington’s national airport no jet traffic is allowed from 11 pm to 7 am. Other airports restrict the use of certain runways. One estimate is that noise restrictions reduce possible airport use by 20 percent. The profitable cargo trade is especially affected by night restrictions. In the case of airports, jet engines may be modified to reduce their noise level, or insulation (隔音) from air traffic noise may be provided by the purchase of land around airports or the insulation of buildings. One estimate is that $5.7 billion would be required to equip all existing jet engines with noise control devices. However, considering the current state of the art, even taking this step will not reduce noise levels at all points to acceptable values. Some combination of methods is probably necessary. If all aircraft were made quieter by existing methods, there would be a number of economic benefits. An increase in airport capacity would occur. Property values near airports might ruse. Transportation costs to and from airports could be reduced since the airports now could be located closer to population centers.Much research still needs to be done on the economic aspects of noise reduction and noise effects. Although some of the effects of noise pollution are known, more must be discovered about its effects on health, productivity, property values and the quality of life. Furthermore, the cost of noise pollution to the economy as a whole needs to be investigated. The public must be alerted to the dangers and economic costs of noise pollution so that people may make intelligent choices and exert appropriate pressures.1. There is no jet traffic at Washington’s national airport from 11 pm to 7 am because _____.A. it is extremely dangerous to fly in the darkB. noise regulations restrict the hours of airport operationC. some of its runways are not in good conditionD. cargo planes produce disturbing noises2. "the current state of the art" (in para.2) means ______.A. a developed sense of beautyB. the volumes of present-day trafficC. the most recently developed technologyD. insulation of air traffic noise3. Noise reduction could lead to_____.A. increased airport capacityB. lower property valuesC. effective modification of existing jet enginesD. more transportation costs to and from airports4. What is not mentioned in the passage?A. psychological strain.B. handling capacity of cargo.C. measures for noise reduction.D. public pressures.5. The author of the passage is concerned primarily with _____.A. the effects of noise on the quality of lifeB. the role of air traffic restrictionsC. the production of quieter enginesD. the economic aspects of noise reductionPassage twoQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage.During a state of deep relaxation, several physiological changes take place in the body: the body's oxygen consumption is reduced; the heart beat decreases; muscle tension and sweating ease, and there is decreased sympathetic (交感的) nervous system activity. This restful state not only allows the body to repair and restore itself, but it has a calming effect on the consciousness. How to achieve this state of relaxation, however, is a matter of opinion, and in some medical circles, a matter of controversy (争议). A recent report by Dr. David Holmes of the university of Kansas in the journal "American psychologist" said that simply sitting in an armchair has just as many beneficial characteristics for the body as meditation (冥想) does. Researchers of other relaxation techniques disagree. These experts believe that more structured techniques, such as meditation, lead to a condition of deep relaxation. The debate goes on, but one thing appears to be clear: the relaxation response can be reached by a number of methods, and the methods themselves are not as important as getting there. One day, one method may work best; on another day, an alternative method may be more appropriate. Those who love it sometimes give the impression that it is an adequate substitute for food, shelter, and love. It isn't. Words, no matter how satisfying, are never an equivalent for life itself and its human experiences. Those who dislike poetry on principle sometimes claim, on the other hand, thatpoetry is only words and good for nothing. That’s not true either. It is easy to become frustrated by words-in poetry or in life-but when words represent and recreate genuine human feelings, as they often do in poetry, they can be very important. Poetry is, in fact, more than just words. It is an experience of words, and those who know how to read poetry can easily extend their experience of life, their sense of what other people are like, their awareness of themselves, and their range of human feelings. One reason poetry can be so important is that it is so closely concerned with feelings. Poetry is often full of ideas, too, and sometimes poems can be powerful experiences of the mind, but most poems are primarily about how people feel rather than how people think. Poems provide, in fact, a language for feeling, and one of poetry's most insistent merits involves its attempt to express the inexpressible. How can anyone, for example, put into words hat it means to be in love or what it feels like to lose someone one cares about? Poetry tries, and it often captures exactly the shade of emotion that feels just right to a reader. No single poem can be said to express all the things that love or death feels like, or means, but one of the joys of experiencing poetry occurs when we read a poem and want to day, "yes, that is just what it is like; I know exactly what that line means but I’ve never been able to express it so well." Poetry can be the voice of our feelings even when our minds are speechless with grief or joy.11."People seldom feel neutral about poetry" (in para.1) in this context means that _____.A. few people think that poetry is neutralB. people always differ in their views about poetryC. people rarely take a biased opinion about poetryD. people generally think of poetry as extremely important or totally useless12. The author suggests that _____.A. poetry tends to make the reader disappointedB. poetry makes its readers sentimentalC. poetry is more important than wordsD. poetry often captures real human feelings13. According to the author, poetry _____.A. is more than just wordsB. is the poets' feelings about wordsC. is anything but patterns of linesD. is an experiment on the use of words14. Poetry tries, persistently, to express ______.A. what love and death meanB. what people think about themselvesC. what people feel but find it hard to describeD. how people go through life15. This passage is mainly about ______.A. the structure of poetryB. the components of poetryC. the nature and importance of poetryD. the appreciation of poetryIII. To Lease(租赁)or Not to LeasePlanning to lease a car because you don't think you can afford to buy?Think again.Leasing can end up being just as expensive as buying. Most people think about leasing because they believe it will cost them less money. They're right-it is cheaper, but only in the short term. For example,if you were to lease anew Subaru Forester, you might pay$300per month for the car.If you were to buy the same car,you would pay about$400per month. Over a three-year,you would save$3600-a big savings. But after your lease is over, you have to give the car back. Many people want to lease because they can drive a more expensive car than they might otherwise be able to afford. For example,if you spend$300 monthly on a car,you might be able to lease a new Ford Explorer. For the same price, you might have to buy a used Explorer,or buy a new but much less expensive model.A lease, therefore, allows you to drive the latest models of more expensive cars. However, whatever car you can afford to buy you get to keep it,and it will always have a resell or trade-in(以新旧换)value if you want to upgrade to a new car later.Furthermore, people who lease cars are often shocked by how much they must pay when the lease is over. Most leases limit you to a certain number ofmiles. If you go over that, you must pay for each mile.As a result, you may end up paying thousands of dollars in mileage(里程)fees. In addition, when you lease, you have to pay for regular maintenance and repairs to the vehicle. Since you must return the car finally, you are paying to repair someone else's car.By now,the benefits of buying over leasing should be clear.Remember: whatever model you can afford to buy,it is yours after you make the payments. There's no giving back, and that makes all the difference.1.People usually think leasing a car can save money.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given2.Leasing a car costs less in the long term.B.FalseC.Not GivenA.True3.More people like to lease cars than before.A.TrueB.FalseC Not Given4.People can lease a car they cannot afford.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given5.Young people prefer to lease the latest models of cars.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given6.Ford Explorer is the most popular model in the leasing market.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given7.People often pay more than they expect for a lease.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given8.People need to pay for each mile they drive during the lease.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given9.Leasing companies pay for repairs to the leased cars.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given10.The author advises people to buy an affordable car.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given第二部分:阅读选择(第11〜15题,每题2分,共10分)阅读下面短文,请从短文后所给各题的4个选项(A、B、C、D)中选出1个最佳选项,并在答题卡相应位置上将该项涂黑。

New technologies and a rising interest in healthier and organic eating have had a huge impact on how farms do business. At the same time, a growing population has put more demands on farmers. They need to find ways to increase their production levels. The small family farms that used to produce most of the products have been largely replaced by factory farms. Small family farms that are still operating are struggling to keep up. Technology has made most aspects of farm life easier than it has ever been before. Bigger and more efficient equipment makes work such as plowing up fields and sowing the seeds easier. Such tasks used to take two or three times as long. These advances have allowed farmers to work faster and more efficiently than ever before. In addition to newer technology, factory farms produce more products for less money than traditional farming would require. Modern farm life, despite the introduction of new technologies, has not changed much from what it has always been, Farmers still wake up early, and spend their days doing hard work. There are still animals to feed, cows to be milked, and fields to be plowed, Farm life still requires a lot of hard work and sacrifice. The main change in modern farm life is in the way farms are run. It is common for even small farms to have several hired workers and even an animal manager. Family-run farms are becoming rarer. Factory farms, with other larger farm corporations, are becoming the norm. Although there are still many traditional family farms, they are quickly dying as modern practices change farm life forever. 1. Factory farms now produce most of the products. A. True B False C. One side of the planet is almost always in sunshine; the other almost always in darkness and estimated temperatures range from minus four degrees Celsius to a very hot 71 degrees. A yearmeanwhile would go by in just 37 days.Of course, whether life could really be supported on Gliese 581g will need much more investigation and, most probably, technologies which don't exist yet. Many of them are under 30 years old and will be directly affected by the new ban.The government's been under growing pressure to do more to protect its workers. Women employed in the informal sector as part of a household are very vulnerable. Nepal's Embassies in the region say they deal with numerous cases of alleged physical or sexual abuse, as well as complaints about unpaid wages and terrible conditions. Many run safe houses to support women who flee their employer's homes. It's only 18 months since the government ended a 12-year ban on all women workers to the Gulf. That wasimposed after a young woman working in Kuwait committed suicide. Now they're adopting this partial ban in the hope that older women might be less at risk. Nepal has a high unemployment rate and the government is trying to strike a balance between protection and allowing women to pursue opportunities.Other countries face the same dilemma. Two months ago, Kenya banned its citizens from working in the Middle East because, it said, increasing numbers were being mistreated. Last year, Indonesia introduced a ban on women working as maids in the region.
