Life on the FarmLife on a farm is always changing. New technologies and a rising interest in healthier and organic eating have had a huge impact on how farms do business. Atthe same time, a growing population has put more demands on farmers. They need to find ways to increase their production levels. The small family farms that used to produce most of the products have been largely replaced by factory farms. Small family farms that are still operating are struggling to keep up.Technology has made most aspects of farm life easier than it has ever been before. Bigger and more efficient equipment makes work such as plowing up fieldsand sowing the seeds easier. Such tasks used to take two or three times as long. These advances have allowed farmers to work faster and more efficiently than ever before. In addition to newer technology, factory farms produce more products for less money than traditional farming would require.Modem farm life, despite the introduction of new technologies, has not changed much from what it has always been. Farmers still wake up early, and spend theirdays doing hard work. There are still animals to feed, cows to be milked, andfields to be plowed. Farm life still requires a lot of hard work and sacrifice. The main change in modem farm life is in the way farms are run. It is commonfor even small farms to have several hired workers and even an animal manager. Family-run farms are becoming rarer. Factory farms, with other larger farmcorporations, are becoming the norm. Although there are still many traditional family farms, they are quickly dying as modem practices change farm life forever.1. It‘s estimated that more than 2 million people have left the rolls since 1994.In the past four years, welfare rolls in Athens Country have been cut in half. But 70 percent of the people who left in the past tow years took jobs that paid less than $6 an hour. The result:The Athens County poverty rate still remains at more than 30 percent—twice the national average. For advocates (代言人)for the poor, that‘s an indication much more needs to be done.“More people are getting jobs, but it‘s not making their lives any better, ”says Kathy Lairn, a policy analyst at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in Washington.A center analysis of US Census data nationwide found that between 1995 and 1996, a greater percentage of single, female-headed households were earning money on their own, but that average income for these households actually went down. But for many, the fact that poor people are able to support themselves almost as well without government aid as they did with it is in itself a huge victory.“Welfare was a poison. It was a toxin (毒素)that was poisoning the family, ”says Robert Rector, a welfare-reform policy analyst.“The reform in changing the moral climate in low-in come communities. It‘s beginning to rebuild the work ethic (道德观), which is much more important. ”Mr. Rector and others argued that once “the habit of dependency is cracked, ”then the country can make other policy changes aimed at improving living standards.1.From the passage, it can be seen that the author ____D____.A) believes the reform has reduced the government‘s burden B) insists that welfare reform is doing little good for the poor C) is overenthusiastic about the success of welfare reformD) considers welfare reform to be fundamentally successful2.Why aren‘t people enjoying better lives when they have jobs?____C___.A) Because many families are divorced. B) Because government aid is now rare.C) Because their wages are low. D) Because the cost of living is rising3.What is worth noting from the example of Athens County is that ___A_____.A) greater efforts should be made to improve people‘s living standards B) 70 percent of the people there have been employed for two years C) 50 percent of the population no longer relies on welfareD) the living standards of most people are going down4.From the passage we know that welfare reform aims at ____B____.A) saving welfare funds B) rebuilding the work ethic C) providing more jobs D) cutting government expenses5.According to the passage before the welfare reform was carried out, ____D____.A) the poverty rate was lover B) average living standards were higherC) the average worker was paid higher wages D) the poor used to rely on government aid正确答案:【1.D2.C 3.A 4.B 5.D 】2、Amtrak (美国铁路客运公司)was experiencing a downswing in ridership (客运量)along the lines comprising its rail system. Of major concern to Amtrak and its advertising agency DDB Needham, were the long-distance western routes where ridership had been declining significantly. ]At one time, trains were the only practical way to cross the vast areas of the west. Trains were fast, very luxurious, and quite convenient compared to other forms of transportation existing at the time. However, times change and the automobile became America‘s standard of convenience. Also, air travel had eas ily established itself as the fastest method of traveling great distances. Therefore, the task for DDB Needham was to encourage consumers to consider other aspects of train travel in order to change their attitudes and increase the likelihood that trains would be considered for travel in the west. Two portions of the total market were targeted:1)anxious fliers—those concerned with safety, relaxation, and cleanliness and 2)travel-lovers—those viewing themselves as relaxed, casual, and interested in the travel experience as part of their vacation. The agency then developed a campaign that focused on travel experiences such as freedom, escape, relaxation, and enjoyment of the great western outdoors. While countries such as India have made joint efforts to reduce birth rates, Brazil has had better result without really trying, says George Martine at Harvard. Brazil‘s population growth rate has dropped from 2. 99%a year between 1951 and 1960 to 1. 93%a year between 1981 and 1990, and Brazilian women now have only 2. 7 children on average. Martine says this figure may have fallen still further since 1990, an achievement that makes it the envy of many other Third World countries. Martine puts it down to, among other things, soap operas (通俗电视连续剧)and installment (分期付款)plans introduced in the 1970s. Both played an important, although indirect, role in lowering the birth rate. Brazil is one of the world‘s biggest producers of soap operas. Globo, Brazil‘s most popular television network, shows three hours of soaps six nights a week, while three others show at least one hour a night. Most soaps are based on wealthy characters living the high life in big cities. “Although they have never really tried t o work in a message towards the problems of reproduction, they describe middle and upper class values-not many children, different attitudes towards sex, women working, ”says Martine. “They sent this image to all parts of Brazil and made people conscious o f other patterns of behavior and other values, which were put into a very attractive package. ”Meanwhile, the installment plans tried to encourag e the poor to become consumers. “This led to an enormous change in consumption patterns and consumption was inc ompatible (不相容的)with unlimited reproduction, ”says Martine.1.According to the passage, Brazil has cut back its population growth ____D____.A) by educating its citizens B) by careful family planning C) by developing TV programmes D) by chance2.According to the passage, many Third World countries ____C____.A) haven‘t attached much importance to birth control B) would soon join Brazil in controlling their birth rateC) haven‘t yet found an effective measure to control their populationD) neglected the role of TV plays in family planning3.The phrase “puts it down to”(Line 1, Para. 3)is closest in meaning to “____A____”.A) attributes it to B) finds it a reason for C) sums it up as D) compares it to4.Soap operas have helped in lowering Brazi l‘s birth rate because ____B____.A) they keep people sitting long hours watching TV B) they have gradually changed people‘s way of lifeC) people are drawn to their attractive package D) they popularize birth control measures5.What is Martine‘s conclusion about Brazil‘s population growth?_____B____A) The increase in birth rate will promote consumption. B) The desire for consumption helps to reduce birth rate. C) Consumption patterns and reproduction patterns are contradictory.D) A country‘s production is limited by its population growth.正确答案:【1.D 2.C 3.A 4.B 5.B 】4、The biggest safety threat facing airlines today may not be a terrorist with a gun, but the man with the portable computer in business class. In the last 15 years, pilots have reported well over 100 incidents that could have been caused by electromagnetic interference. The source of this interference remains unconfirmed, but increasingly, experts are pointing the blame at portable electronic device such as portable computers, radio and cassette players and mobile telephones.RTCA, an organization which advises the aviation (航空)industry, has recommended that all airlines ban (禁止)such devices from being used during “critical”stages of flight, particularly take-off and landing. Some experts have gone further, calling for a total ban during all flights. Currently, rules on using these devices are left up to individual airlines. And although some airlines prohibit passengers from using such equipment during take-off and landing, most are reluctant to enforce a total ban, given that many passengers want to work during flights. The difficulty is predicting how electromagnetic fields might affect an aircraft‘s computers. Experts know that portable devi ce emit radiation which affects those wavelengths which aircraft use for navigation and communication. But, because they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a laboratory, they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not.The fact that aircraft may be vulnerable (易受损的)to interference raises the risk that terrorists may use radio systems in order to damage navigation equipment. As worrying, though, is the passenger who can‘t hear the instructions to turn off his radio because the music‘s too loud.1.The passage is mainly about ____C____. A) a new regulation for al airlines B) the defects of electronic devicesC) a possible cause of aircraft crashes D) effective safety measures for air flight2.What is said about the over 100 aircraft incidents in the past 15 years?____D___A) They may have been caused by the damage to the radio systems. B) They may have taken place during take-off and landing.C) They were proved to have been caused by the passengers portable computers.D) They were suspected to have resulted from electromagnetic interference.3.Few airlines want to impose a total ban on their passengers using electronic devices because ____B____.A) they don‘t believe there is such a danger as radio interferenc e B) the harmful effect of electromagnetic interference is yet to be proved C) most passengers refuse to take a plane which bans the use of radio and cassette playersD) they have other effective safety measures to fall back on4.Why is it difficu lt to predict the possible effects of electromagnetic fields on an airplane‘s computers?__C____A) Because it is extremely dangerous to conduct such research on an airplane. B) Because it remains a mystery what wavelengths are liable to be interfered with. C) Because research scientists have not been able to produce the same effects in labs.D) Because experts lack adequate equipment to do such research.5.It can be inferred from the passage that the author ____A____.A) is in favor of prohibiting pass engers‘use of electronic devices completely B) has overestimated the danger of electromagnetic interference C) hasn‘t formed his own opinion on this problem D) regards it as unreasonable to exercise a total ban during flight 正确答案:【1.C 2.D 3.B 4.C 5.A 】5、The rise of multinational corporations (跨国公司), global marketing, new communications technologies, and shrinking cultural differences have led to an unparalleled increase in global public relations or PR.Surprisingly, since modern PR was largely an American invention, the U. S. leadership in public relations is being threatened by PR efforts in other countries. Ten years ago, for example, the world‘s top five public relations agencies were American-owned. In 1991, only one was. The British in particular are becoming more sophisticated and creative. A recent survey found that more than half of all British companies include PR as part of their corporate (公司的)planning activities, compared to about one-third of U. S. companies. It may not be long before London replaces New York as the capital of PR.Why is America lagging behind in the global PR race? First, Americans as a whole tend to be fairly provincial and take more of an interest in local affairs. Knowledge of world geography, for example, has never been strong in this country. Secondly, Americans lag behind their European and Asian counterparts (相对应的人)in knowing a second language. Less than 5 percent of Burson—Marshall ‘s U. S. employees know two languages. Ogilvy and Mather has about the same percentage. Conversely, some European firms have。

Life on the FarmLife on a farm is always changing. New technologies and a rising interest in healthier and organic eating have had a huge impact on how farms do business. At the same time, a growing population has put more demands on farmers. They need to find ways to increase their production levels. The small family farms that used to produce most of the products have been largely replaced by factory farms. Small family farms that are still operating are struggling to keep up.Technology has made most aspects of farm life easier than it has ever been before. Bigger and more efficient equipment makes work such as plowing up fields and sowing the seeds easier. Such tasks used to take two or three times as long. These advances have allowed farmers to work faster and more efficiently than ever before. In addition to newer technology, factory farms produce more products for less money than traditional farming would require.Modern farm life, despite the introduction of new technologies, has not changed much from what it has always been. Farmers still wake up early, and spend their days doing hard work. There are still animals to feed, cows to be milked, and fields to be plowed. Farm life still requires a lot of hard work and sacrifice. The main change in modern farm life is in the way farms are run. It is common for even small farms to have several hired workers and even an animal manager. Family-run farms are becoming rarer. Factory farms, with other larger farm corporations, are becoming the norm. Although there are still many traditional family farms, they are quickly dying as modern practices change farmlife forever.1.Factory farms now produce most of the products.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given【答案】A【解析】题干大意:工厂农场现在生产大部分的产品。

In addition to newer technology, factory farms produce more products for less money than traditional farming would require.Modern farm life, despite the introduction of new technologies, has not changed much from what has always been. Farmers still wake up early, and spend their days doing hard work. There are animals to feed, cows to be milked, and fields to be plowed. Farm still requires a lot of hard work and sacrifice. The main change in modern farm life is still in the way farms are run. It is common for even small farms to have several hired workers and even an animal manager. Family-run farms are becoming rarer. Factory farms, with other larger farm corporations, are becoming the norm. Although there are still many traditional family farms, they are quickly dying as modern practices change farm life forever.1.Factory farms now produce most of the productsA.TrueB. FalseC. It sat on the counter for a year, but then it disappeared, probably into a closet somewhere. Another year, she made handmade soaps with nice smells, but they probably weren’t any better than store-bought soaps. Last year, she sent lots of nice pictures of herself in frames, but grandparents’ house was small, and they couldn’t hang up very many. This year, she decided on fruit. She lived where it was warm and there was lots of nice fruit. Her grandparents lived up north, where it was colder and they couldn’t get fresh fruit all year, or at least not oranges and grapefruit. Fresh fruit was healthy for her grandparents, too.Mary went to a fruit store and sampled the red oranges. She really liked them and bought a kilogram. Then she tried three kinds of grapefruit. The white ones were sour. The star grapefruit were interesting, but the dark red grapefruit were great. So she got a kilogram.Mary carefully packed the fruit in a box to keep them safe and dry in case one got smashed and its juice got everywhere. Then she wrote the address on the box andmailed it from the store. She felt happy with what she bought.
It is generally believed that nothing went wrong with the experiment, _______?【答案】isn't itSection II Reading ComprehensionPassage OneMost new houses are built in such a way that they are unlikely to survive more than 60 or 70 years. In order to provide housing for a growing population, huge areas of the countryside are built on every year. One of the reasons why such houses do not last long is that they are often created by developers who use very cheap materials. Of course, it is also true that the cost of building houses has increased in the past few years. However, one of the main reasons why developers do not spend much money on materials is that it is not in their interest to build houses which lasta long time: they make their money by building new houses, not by looking after old ones.Another reason why new houses do not last long is that people's ideas about how they should look change considerably with every generation. In the past two decades, for example, people have desired a type of house which has a kitchen and living room on the ground floor with all the bedrooms on the floor above. This means that houses designed in any other way lose their value very quickly and may have to be pulled down after only 10 or 20 years. It is not only the building of new houses which is to blame, however ─ part of the problem is our attitude to old houses. Most people, especially if they are young, do not want to live in them because they are considered old-fashioned and cold. However, if people continue to knock down old houses to build new ones, the countryside will continue to disappear and the housing problem, especially in urban areas, will continue to be severe.2. The passage implies that _______.【答案】new houses are often cheaply built and they quickly lose their valuePassage TwoThe number of teenagers working part-time after school is rising. Last year the figure was nearly 200,000. What will it be next year? The truth is, no one knows. But we do know that part-time work gives many teenagers self-confidence, experience of the world of work, a little money of their own,and perhaps most importantly, freedom from the control of their parents before they go to college or get a full-time job.Part-time jobs are not only a rich source of experience, but can also teach teenagers vital social and business skills. For example, they learn punctuality, the importance of appearance in the work situation, honesty and politeness. They may also acquire such abilities as using a cash register, preparation of food, typing and other general office skills.Parents are often ambivalent (矛盾) about their child's after-school work. On one hand, they like to see their children independent young adults, to see them earning money and paying for some of the things they want or need. On the other hand, they prefer their children to focus on their school work,to get as much as possible from the education system. When asked about this, parents often answer: “If the student can do both, why not?” It seems to me that this is not the most important point. The most important question is how much free, unscheduled time a child should have, not how the child fills that time.Parents do not have the final answer. Students do. If the student is employed in more than the maximum numbers of hours legally allowed, or if his/her job is affecting his/her school work, it is up to the student to quit or cut back on his/her work schedule.Part-time work can sometimes affect a student's school work. But part-time work can also create a sense of competence that leads to academic success. In my experience, a student who has learned how to be a team player on the athletic field or who has learned how to please customers or"bosses" in the workplace has learned the kind of skills he/she can apply to get good grades in school or to do any job better.3. According to the passage, teenagers can benefit from part-time work in all of the following ways EXCEPT _______.【答案】getting high salary以上是几道2018年自考英语综合试题的真题内容,通过学习历年的真题,考生可以了解题目类型、考点、难度以及自己在哪些方面存在问题,以便有针对性地备考。

in one country may well mean something quite different to those living in another. The ring gesture, where you form an “O”by holding me tip of your forefinger to the tip of your thumb, means in Britain that you think something is good.Take a trip to France, and you may fail to impress your French host when you use it to tell him your opinion of his new car,for in France it means zero or worthless.Travel further south and you are in even greater trouble, for in Tunisia it means “I’ll kill you!”Similar problems occur on the other side of the Atlantic.Although in the US the ring gesture has the same meaning as in Britain,it is used as an insult in Latin America.Unfortunately former US President Richard Nixon was unaware of nding on a visit to one South American country he came out of the aircraft with both hands held high showing the ring gesture.Having just been told to go to hell by their visitor, his hosts gave the puzzled President a somewhat frosty reception.Had he used the same gesture in Japan, his hosts would have been puzzled, for it means money there.Try to avoid these misunderstandings by using another gesture to indicate that you think something is good and you may down, for in Greece it is an insult.Pulling down the lower lid of your eye with one finger is usually used to indicate alertness. In France and Greece it means much the same as“My eye!”in the past three years we’ve been dating, his mother has told him repeatedly to end our relationship because ‘‘there are a lot of nice Korean girls’’she wants him to meet. She complains that I have a career and that I had my own place. She detects flaws everywhere.I have a career because I want to fulfill my dreams、not because I dislike raising a family.I got my own place because my job required me
