The ones who look up every new word do not read fast. Therefore they do not have time to read much. Those who use small two-language dictionaries have the worst problems. Their dictionaries often give only one or two words as translations of English. But one English word often has many translations in a foreign language and one foreign word has many translations in English. The most successful students are those who use large college edition dictionaries with about 100,000 words but do not use them too often. When they are reading, these students first try to get the general idea and understand new words from the context. Then they reread and use the dictionary to look up only key words that they still do not understand. They use dictionaries more for writing. If they are not sure how to spell a word, or divide it into syllables (音节), they alwaysuse a dictionary. Also, if they think a noun might have an unusual plural form, they check these in a dictionary.25.The writer thinks that .A. choose a good dictionary, and you’ll be successful in learning EnglishB. dictionaries are not necessary to the students who learn EnglishC. it is very important for students to use good dictionaries properlyD. using dictionaries very often can’t help to improve writing26.According to the passage, which of the following is wrong?A. At the end of the readingC. During the first readingD. After the first reading28.This passage mainly tells us .A. students shouldn’t use small two-language dictionariesB. what were the defects of small two-language dictionariesC. why students should use large college edition dictionariesD. what dictionary students should choose and how to use itC“Success begins with belief and ends with doubt.”—Larina KaseI remember reading through a book and the author was writing about being a reverse paranoid(妄想狂). In that particular section he mentions how he has a belief that the world he’s living in is out to give him everything he completely wants and desires. There are times when I think to myself,―Wow,the world is sure to get me and make me miserable(悲惨的).‖ Then I thought, why can’t I believe that the world is out to make me a better conversationalist(健谈者). Then I started adapting to (适应)the belief of the reverse paranoia. When I started talking to people,I truly believed that I was the most interesting person in the room. I believed that everything I said added value to the conversation. I believed that people stayed behind and chatted with me because they found me charismatic. As a matter of fact, for about five months I wrote down on my bathroom mirror the following affirmation(肯定):―Peopl e love me and respect me. It is an honor to talk to me. People find me interesting and charming and always want to get to know me better!‖I would say the affirmation after I brushed my teeth. And I would continue to say it until I felt complete ly great about myself. There were days that I just wouldn’t feel like saying it,because it would feel like a lie to me. But that’s the trouble, like the quote (引言)says, success ends when there’s doubt. And that’s why I continued until I had no doubt in my mi nd.Then strange things happened,I noticed that people did find me more interesting, and that I gained more confidence in talking with people. I was more assertive(坚定自信的) at work. I was able to control politics and gossip at work to minimal levels, and became a much better manager, and developed better customer relations to the point that sales were up by 20% compared to the year before,on my best month sales were up by 39%,and this was a year that a recession(衰退)was happening.29.The main purpose of the author is to________.A.explain how to be a reverse paranoid B.share his personal experience in success C.tell us the importance of positive thinkingD.advise us how to improve our communication skills30.Before the author started adapting to the belief of the reverse paranoia,he used to _______.A.believe the world would give him anything he desiredB.have a negative attitude towards lifeC.have a strong belief in the worldD.live a miserable life31.Sometimes the author didn’t feel like saying his affirm ation because________.A.it didn’t work as he had expectedB.he had become enthusiastic about conversationsC.he had felt great about himselfD.it didn’t sound true to himself32.We can infer from the last paragraph that the author________.A.didn’t believ e what had happened at workB.didn’t get along with others at workC.had his performance at work affected by the recessionD.made great progress because of his affirmationDIf there is one person who has left a deep impression on me, it’s my teacher Mrs. Pathak who was my class teacher for three years. In my childhood, how I wished I had a mother or a sister like her. One moment she could be tough (严厉的) and strict, another moment caring and compassionate (富有同情心的).She always encouraged us to tell the truth. For example, if one had not done the homework, he need not lie. She allowed us to make mistakes, saying we couldn’t be perfect all the time, but we should try.Another thing she taught me early on was punctuality. She set a good example with her own behaviour. She was always on time, so we students tried our best to be on time. She surprised us with her sense of humour. Her classroom teaching was always humorous. After class, she talked to us and told us jokes. We really felt free to ask questions and Mrs. Pathak would give the answers. If she did not know — there had been some occasions (场合) — she would say so. We all then tried to find out the answers. Whoever came up with the answer was appreciated and given the due credit (应有的称赞). Now I sometimes wonder whether Mrs. Pathak was pretending just to encourage us to explore and find answers by ourselves.33.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT suitable for describing Mrs. Pathak?A. Tough.B. Humorous.C. Compassionate.D. Careful.34.The underlined word ―so‖ in the last paragraph means that _____.A. the answers were not rightB. she didn’t know the answersC. the answers were correctD. she would give the answers35.In the author’s opinion, why didn’t Mrs. Patha k give the answers to the questions sometimes?A. Because she didn’t like answering the questions.B. Because she didn’t know the answers to the questions.C. Because she wanted the students to find them out by themselves.D. Because she thought the students knew the answers already.第二节、根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

In my opinion, the most effective way is to learn lessons by heart. If you can recite the text and write it out, you’ve learned it fairly well. And if you can tell, in your own words, what the lesson says you’re a very succ essful learner indeed. Your English will be quite perfect. This is a difficult task. However, if you try to learn by heart only part of each lesson, you’ll find it not half so hard as you might have thought.Learning this way, you will make rapid progress. Of course, writing is also necessary. It helps you a lot on our way to success in English.Equally important is to feel the language. You should be able to laugh at jokes and be shocked at bad news. When using English, try to forget your mother tongue. Instead of helping you, your own language gets in your way. So, never try to see English through translation.1.In the writer’s opinion, the most effective way in learning English is ____.A.to practise speaking, writing and feeling itB.to forget your own native languageC.to translate everything into his own languageD.to memorize the English words and grammatical rules2. “Instead of helping you, your own language gets in your way.”This sentencemeans that memorizing your own language can ________.A.help you to study English wellB.stop you mastering EnglishC.make English easy to learnD.help you notice mistakes3.Equally important is to feel the language. “to feel the language” heremeans________.A.to get a knowledge of English by touchingB. to be able to read and write EnglishC.to translate English into your own by imaginingD.to be able to experience the rich sensation of the languageKeysACBCB DABAD CACCB CABDC ABD。

Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift to her father the next morning and said, "This is for you, Daddy." My husband had insisted on watering the flowers in the garden by himself, and when he discovered that he couldn't manage he asked me for help at the last moment. Current policy focuses on reducing aggression but this research shows that there should be equal effort to reduce victimization.More than 4,000 children were surveyed at 13 schools at four local authorities in the North, the Midlands,London, and the South. The study found that 25% of 11-year-olds were drinking monthly and 3.6% daily, with 12.8% admitting to getting drunk 3 to 5 times a year. By the age of 16,40% were drinking weekly and 6.2% were drinking every day. The research also showed 22.6% of 16-year-olds were getting drunk more than 21 times a year. The study, which has just been published in the Journal of Adolescence, found a strong link between frequency of drinking and frequency of hitting other people. However, children who reported drinking monthly were also three times more likely to be hit. Adolescents who drank but didn’t get into fights were more like ly to be hit than those who did fight.Professor Jonathan Shepherd, who led the research, said a lot of previous alcohol-related violence work had focused on the offenders rather than the victims. His team is calling for more prevention work from parents and teachers in the first two years of secondary school by taking advantage of the “teachable moment”,that is,immediately after a student has missed school because of drunkenness.Previous work by Professor Jonathan Shepherd has shown drinkers may be more at risk of violence because of reduced physical co-ordination,poor decision-making in threatening situations and isolation while out late at night. He said,“This new study seems to be the first to show a direct link between alcohol misuse and victimization. There now needs to be much more effort put into reducing alcohol misuse in order to reduce injury.”1.The main idea of the passage is that teenagers who drink alcohol________.A.often offend other peopleB.often become injuredC.are more likely to become victims of violenceD.are more likely to fight with others2.The underlined word “aggression” in the third paragraph probably means “________”.A.violence B.sad feelingsC.bad manners D.drunkenness3.The research argues that more effort should be made to________.A.reduce aggression B.prevent fightingC.reduce victimization D.prevent drinking alcohol4.Drinkers may be more at risk of violence because of all the following EXCEPT________.A.reduced physical co-ordinationB.isolation while out late at nightC.a higher frequency of hitting other peopleD.poor decision-making in threatening situations5.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to Professor Shepherd’s research?A.The frequency of children getting drunk increases with age.B.His previous alcohol-related violence work had focused on the offenders.C.Some children missed school because of drunkenness.D.This new study shows a direct link between alcohol misuse and victimization.BWhen I met him,I had a lot of anger inside of me.
