通过理论探讨和实践分析,作者论证了导游词的两大英译原则即“以游客为出发点”和“以传播中国文化为取向”,只有在该原则指导下的导游词译本方能使涉外导游真正成为“友谊的使节,文化的传播者”。

作为一种典型的跨文化交际活动,全球旅游业迅猛发展,在中国尤为如此。
据世界贸易组织(wTo)预测,中国在未来几十年中将成为全世界最大的旅游目的地之一。
这无疑给传播中国文化创造了良好的契机,同时也对涉外旅游服务提出了更高的要求。
1导游词涉外导游人员作为“民间大使”,在向外国游客提供服务时起到关键作用,他们的一言一行都将影响游客对中国的认识和态度。
导游词是导游员在途中或景点等地向游客提供口头讲解服务所使用的,其主要功能是使游客更好地了解旅游地的自然风光和民俗风情。
本文所探讨的主要是导游词预制文本的翻译,即事先译好供导游员从事涉外导游服务的文本。
优秀的导游词译文配以声情并茂的讲解能使“祖国大好河山的?静态?变为动态,使沉睡了千百年的文物古迹复活,使优雅的传统工艺品栩栩如生,从而使旅游者感到妙趣横生,留下经久难忘的深刻印象。
”(陈刚:20XX)而令人遗憾的是,在现有的导游词的翻译方法中,有的译文往往不顾游客的接受能力和文化背景,一味追求语言文字和信息量的“对等”;有的甚至面对文化差异造成的“词汇空缺”一律回避不译。
这些不但会使游客感到莫名其妙,游兴大减,甚至使他们对中国文化造成误解,达不到传播文化的目的。
2德国功能派翻译理论20世纪70280年代,德国的凯瑟琳娜·赖斯(KatharinaReiss)、汉斯·威密尔(HansVermeer)、贾斯塔·赫兹·曼塔利(JustaHolzmntrri)、克里斯汀娜·诺德(christianenord)等学者提出的“功能翻译理论”为翻译理论研究开辟了一个新的视角。
赖斯根据卡尔·布勒(KarlBühler)的语言功能理论,提出了文本类型与翻译策略论。
赖斯的三种基本文本类型包括信息、表达和呼唤文本(见图一),而大部分文本都属于“复合类型”。
导游词(应隶属于旅游宣传册一类)恰恰位于该图的中心位置,是一种集信息、表达和呼唤功能为一体的复合文本。
此外赖斯还谈到一种听觉媒介文本(audio2medialtext),主要包括广播电视,舞台表演,戏剧与演讲等等,她在《翻译批评:潜力和制约》(20XX)中数次强调该文本的翻译应以受众的听觉效果为中心。
同时赖斯认为在翻译的时候,首先应确定文本类型,继而确定相应的导游词翻译翻译策略。
目的论(Skopostheory)是赖斯的学生威密尔于20世纪70年代提出来的,它也是功能派翻译理论中最重要的理论。
Skopos是希腊语,意即“目的”。
根据目的论,所有翻译遵循的首要原则就是“目的法则”:即翻译所要达到的目的决定整个翻译行为的过程。
翻译行动论是由曼塔利于20世纪80年代提出来的。
该理论把翻译视为实现信息的跨文化、跨语言转化而设计的复杂行为。
曼塔利认为翻译过程好比环环相扣的链条,应着重强调译文在目的语文化中的交际功能,决不能仅仅照搬原文模式。
克里斯汀娜·诺德对功能派翻译理论进行梳理分析,她曾以海德堡大学建校600周年校庆宣传册为例,分析了翻译要求(translationbrief)中的各要素,如预期文本功能、目的接受者、接受时间地点、传播媒介、产生与接受文本的原因等的重要性。
诺德还重点提出了“忠诚原则(loyaltyprinciple)”,即要求译者对原文作者忠诚,对原文作者的创作意图要尊重;且译者对译文接受者负有道义责任,有义务向他们说明自己所做的一切以及这样处理的原因等等。
3导游词汉英翻译实例分析根据功能翻译理论,我们不难发现:l.导游词汉英翻译的目的———通过导游员的讲解,使外国游客在轻松的旅游过程中了解中国,从而传播中国文化,促进中外交流,发展旅游业。
2.导游词汉英翻译要求———预期文本功能:集信息、表达、呼唤为一体的复合文本;目的接受者:以来华的英语国家游客为主;接受时间地点:游览某景点时或事先的介绍中;传播媒介:导游员讲解;产生文本的原因:为游客提供讲解服务,传播中国文化与民俗风情。
对导游词的翻译技巧要求的分析决定了导游词英译应以“以游客为出发点”,“以传播中国文化为取向”。
以下笔者将以广东省著名景点陈家祠的导游词的部分汉英翻译为例作进一步阐述。
该篇导游词摘自中国旅游出版社出版的《走遍中国———中国优秀导游词精选》(综合篇)及其英译本Touringchina:SelectedTourcommentaries(V olume1)。
3.1朝代纪年的翻译中国是世界四大文明古国之一,拥有五千年的灿烂文明,为后代留下了无数名胜古迹和文化遗产,这也是中国吸引外国游客的主要原因。
导游词中往往会出现许多朝代纪年,以表明该景点或某习俗历史悠久,源远流长。
然而中国历史上特别是封建社会时期朝代更替频繁,长则几百年,短则几十年。
这些国人尚且不十分清楚,更不用说外国朋友。
有鉴于此,笔者认为如何把朝代和纪年的翻译“变活”,使文本在传达信息的同时达到呼唤功能是值得探讨的。
笔者年前曾往越南一游,在河内的胡志明寝陵前,越南导游介绍说:“胡志明寝陵于1975年建成,当时正值中国文化大革命时期尾声。
”通过历史两相对照,我们一下子对这个特殊的年份有了新的了解,在异国他乡陡生一种亲切感,更感叹世界文明的丰富多姿。
无独有偶,笔者也曾见到过故宫的一段文字介绍及其译法:1)故宫耗时14年,整个工程于1420年结束。

数据虽有误,但这种“以此比彼”的方法将游客所陌生的中国历史与他们所熟悉的历史联系起来,能自然地拉近游客与中国文化的距离,既能极大地激发游兴,又有效地传播了中国文化。
诺德也认为翻译就是比较文化,“translatingmeanscomparingculture”(20XX:34);只有通过与本族文化比较才能更好的理解外国文化,“aforeignculturecanonlybeperceivedbymeansofcomparisonwithourownc ulture”(20XX:34)。
受此启发,笔者拟对以下译文做小小改进。
2)它(陈家祠)始建于1890年,1894年落成。
原译:constructionofthetemplebeganin1890andwascompleted4yearslater.拟译:Toamericans:Theconstructionofthetemplebeganin1890andwascomplet edin1894,20yearsbeforetheconstructionoftheLincolnmemorialHall.ToBritish:Theconstructionofthetemplebeganin1890andwascompletedin1894,thes ameyearLondonTowerBridgewasbuilt.值得一提的是:导游词翻译中针对客源国文化的不同作一定“编译”是正常的,也是必要的。
王连义在《幽默导游词》一书中就专门介绍了针对不同客源地区的旅游者采用的话题,目的只有一个:传播本土文化,促进文化交融。
3.2历史人物的翻译王连义(1990:147)曾讲述过他的一番亲身经历,在参观明十三陵时一导游对外国游客说:"ThisisdingLing,thetombofzhuYijunandhisempresses,XiaoduanandXia oJing.”(这是定陵,是朱翊钧和他的皇后孝端和孝靖的寝陵。
)结果当即有外国游客咕哝说:“whatishetalkingabout?”国内的游客即使对明史了解不多,也能大致领会到“定陵”“孝端”“孝靖”的内在含义,但要使对中国历史知之甚少的外国游客感受到这一层短时间内几乎不可能,于是王连义认为如果他们此行目的不是要成为一个“明史通”,不妨就译为“the13themperorofmingdynastyandhistwoempresses.”3)我国现代杰出的作家、诗人郭沫若先生在当年参观陈家祠后??原译:?theoutstandingmodernwriterandpoetmr.Guomoruo拟译:?theoutstandingmodernwriterandpoetmr.Guomoruo,whoevertranslated Goethe?sFaustusandShelley?spoemsintochinese笔者曾在“微软电子百科全书”中搜索“郭沫若”,结果是简单一句“achinesewriter”。
