Passage 1I was 15 when I walked into McCarley Bookstore and began to look over the titles of the books on the shelves. The man behind the counter, the owner of the bookstore, asked me if I would like a job. I needed to start saving for college, so I said yes.I worked after school and during summers for minimum wages and the job helped pay for my freshman year of college. I worked at many other jobs afterwards: I made coffee in the student union during college. I made maps for the U.S Forest Service. But selling books was one of the most satisfying. One day a woman asked me for books on cancer. She seemed fearful. I showed her everything we had and found other books we could order. She left the shop less worried and I?ve always remembered the pride I felt in having helped her.Years later, as a television reporter, I heard about a poor child who was born with his fingers of the left hand linked together. His family could not afford the corrective surgery, and the boy lived in shame, hiding his left hand in his pocket.I persuaded my boss to let me do the story on TV. After my story was broadcast, a doctor and a nurse called, offering to perform the surgery for free.I visited the boy in the recovery room after the operation. The first thing he did was hold up his repaired hand and say, “Thank you.” I was overjoyed and filled with a strong sense of reward. At McCarley Bookstore, I always felt I was working for the customers, not just for the store. Today it?s the same. NBC news pays me the salary. But I feel that I work for the viewers, helping them make sense of the world. My working experience in McCarley Bookstore helped me find a good sense of the world, and most importantly, it helped me find a good sense of myself.1. How did the author get the job in McCarley Bookstore?A. He happened to walk into the shop and got it by chance.B. He had always wanted to have a job in that bookstore and he succeeded.C. He liked reading books, so tried to get a job there.D. He did not go to school, so he looked for a job when he was 15.2. According to the author, selling books was one of the most satisfying job experiences, because ____________.A. he only had to work after school and got good wagesB. it helped him understand the world and himselfC. it helped him pay for his freshman year of collegeD. he did not feel that he was working for the store3. After he helped the fearful lady looking for books on cancer, the author was ____________.A. worried about herB. less worried about herC. unable to forget herD. proud of himself4. The author decided to help the poor boy by ____________.A. persuading his boss to do the story on TVB. persuading his boss to let him do the story on TVC. asking a doctor to perform the operation for freeD. visiting the boy in the recovery room after the operation5. The main reason that the author thinks his present job is the same as the one in the bookstore is ____________.A. it gives him salaryB. it makes him feel excitedC. it helps people make sense of the worldD. it enables him to work(Key: 1. A 2. B 3. D 4. B 5. C)Passage 2Paper was invented by the Chinese in the first century AD. Paper was not made in southern Europe until about the year 1100. Scandinavia - which now makes a great deal o f the world?s paper - did not begin to make it until 1500. Most paper is made from wood. Paper-making is an important British industry and paper from Britain is sold to many countries such as Australia and South Africa. Some of the wood used in the British paper making industry comes from trees grown in Britain, but wood is also bought from other countries such as Norway. One tree is needed for every four hundred copies of a forty-page newspaper. If half the adults in Britain buy one daily paper, this uses up over a thousand trees a day. All over the world, trees are being cut down faster than they are being planted, so there may be a serious need for paper at the beginning of next century. When we think of paper, we think of newspaper, books, letters and writing paper. But there are many other uses. Only half of paper is used for books and newspaper, etc. Paper is very good for keeping you warm. Each year, more and more things are made of paper. Now we hear that chairs, tables, and even beds can be made of paper. But the latest in paper making seems to be paper houses.1. Where was paper invented?A. In China.B. In southern Europe.C. In Scandinavia.D. In Britain.2. Scandinavia began to make paper ____________.A. in 1100B. in 1400C. in 1500D. in the first century3. All over the world, trees are being cut down ____________ than they are being planted.A. more slowlyB. much fasterC. much more slowlyD. faster5. The latest things made of paper are ____________.A. chairsB. tablesC. clothesD. houses(Key: 1. A 2. C 3. B 4. D 5. D)Passage 3Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there?s a big difference between being a writer and writing. In most cases they are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “You?ve got to want to write,” I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. Only a few writers were kissed by fortune, however thereare thousands more whose work is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer, I had no proposals at all. What I did have was a friend who found me in my room in a New York department building. I didn?t even care that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a good writer. After a year I still had n?t got a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that I hardly made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn?t going to be one of those people who did wondering “What if”. I would keep p utting my dream to the test, even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the Shadowland of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.41. The passage is meant to .A. warn young people of the hardships that a successful writer has to experienceB. advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writerC. show young people it?s unrealistic for a writer to pursue wealth and fameD. encourage young people to pursue a writing career42. What can be concluded from the passage?.A. Good writers often find their work interesting and rewardingB. Writer?s success depends on luck rather than on effortC. Famous writers usually live in poverty and isolationD. The chances for a writer to become successful are small43. Why did the author begin to doubt himself after the firstyear of his writing career?.A. Because he wasn?t able to produce a single bookB. Because he hadn?t seen a change for the betterC. Because he wasn?t abl e to have a rest for a whole yearD. Because he found his dream would never come true44. The word “people” in the sentence “…peop le who did wondering…” in Paragraph 3 refers to those .A. who think a lot without making a decisionB. who regret giving up their career halfwayC. who think too much of the positive side of lifeD. who are full of imagination even upon death45. “Shadowland” in the last sentence refers to .A. the wonderful land one often dreams aboutB. the bright future that one is looking forward toC. the state of uncertainty before one?s final goal is reachedD. a word that exists only in one?s imaginationKey:41. A 42. D 43. B 44. A 45. CPassage 4If we were asked exactly what we were doing a year ago, we should probably have to say that we could not remember. But if we had kept a book and had written in it an account of what we did each day, we should be able to give an answer to the question. It is the same in history. Many things have been forgotten because we do not have any written account of them. Sometimes men did keep a record of the most important happenings in their country, but often it was destroyed by fire or in a war. Sometimes there was never any written record at all because the people then did not know how to write. For example, we know a good dealabout the people who lived in China 4, 000 years ago, because they could write and leave written records for those who lived after them. But we know almost nothing about the people who lived even 200 years ago in central Africa, because they had not learned to write. Sometimes, of course, even if the people cannot write, they may know something of the past. They have heard about it from older people, and often songs and dances and stories have been made about the most important happenings. And these have been sung and acted and told for many generations for most people are proud to tell what their fathers d id in the past. This we may call …remembered history?. Some of it has now been written down. It is not s o exact or so valuable to us as written history is, because words are much more easily changed when used again and again in speech than when copied in writing. But where there are no written records, such spoken stories are often very helpful.46. Which of the following ideas is not suggested in the passage?.A. Where there are no written records, there is no historyB. “Remembered history”, compared wi th written history, is less reliableC. A written account of our daily activities helps us to be able to answer many questionsD. Written records of the past play an important role in our learning of the human history47. We know very little about the central Africa 200 years ago because .A. there was nothing worth being written down at that timeB. the people there ignored the importance of keeping arecordC. the written records were perhaps destroyed by a fireD. the people there did not know how to write48. “Remembered history” refers to .A. history based on a person?s imaginationB. stories of important happenings passed down from mouth to mouthC. songs and dances about the most important eventsD. both B and C49. “Remembered history” is considered valuable only when .A. it is written downB. no written account is availableC. it proves to be trueD. people are interested in it50. The passage suggests that we could have learned much more about human history than we do now if the ancient people had .A. made more songs and dancesB. not burnt their written records in warsC. kept a written record of every past eventD. told exact stories of the most important happeningsKey:46. Lucy loves new technology. She owns a games console, an MP3 player, and a mobile phone with a built-in digital camera. David is a teacher. Lucy is his student.Like Lucy, many children grow up using computers almost every day and often know more about technology than adults. Educator Marc Prensky calls children like Lucy “digital natives”. Digital natives can quickly learn how to use new gadgets and new software, while non-digital natives spend a lot of time reading manuals and worrying about computer viruses. In fact, many parents try to save time by asking their children to teach them how to use new technology! The divide between digital natives and non-digital natives can cause problems at school because students and teachers grow up with very different ideas about technology. Many teachers think that playing computer games is a waste of time and that technology has made children unable to concentrate. However, many students think their classes are slow and boring, and want to use computers to study.Prensky believes that digital natives have learned a lot from technology, but that they learn things in a different way. For example, reading a website is different from reading a book, so digital natives are good at finding the information they need and choosing what they want to read. So perhaps teachers need to change the way they teach and use more technology in class – because the number of digital natives will keep increasing!1 David is a digital native.2 Marc Prensky is interested in teaching with technology.3 Digital natives are comfortable using laptops and flash drives.4 Many teachers think computer games are only for having fun or killing time.5 People read books and websites in the same way.Key: FTTTF7.From: U10L2 P153SpanglishIn which city can you read signs like “Aparca your car aquí” or “Cuidado con los pickpockets”? This reflects the enormous increase in the Hispanic population in the States. There are now 42 million Hispanics resident in the USA, representing 15% of the total population. There is a new language, SPANGLISH – a strange mixture of Spanish and English – which is invading the city. The New York Times recently said that it had become the city’s third official language. Its use is colloquial and often limited to short sentences and signs. Many New Yorkers now wear socketines on their feet, drop something on the carpeta, shop for grocerias and have cornfley(“cornflakes”) for breakfast.Norma Rodríguez, a 45-year-old Cuban living in Washington Heights, says it forms a part of her life now: “Sometimes, you don’t realize that you’re mixing the two languages. You just hear them both all the time and find that you’re inventing new words.” Other people, however, are fighting against this new street language. Bu sinessman Juan Cortés sees it as a sign that the Spanish language is being destroyed. “It’s difficult, but I try not to speak it –it feels vulgar to me.”Meanwhile, a surprising number of academics have spoken in favour of Spanglish.

The author went through a breathtaking travel six years ago and the experience impressed him deeply because he found a real hero in that emergency. On one Friday morning, a flight headed for Atlanta. Soon after the plane took off, the pilot announced the urgent crisis that one engine was broken and the hydraulic system had failed. Worse still, they might be about to crash. Suddenly, panic spread all over the crowd. Many passengers look grim and pale. All around, people cried and screamed. In the chaos, there was a soft and calm voice from a woman who was trying to comfort her daughter. The mother seemed undisturbed by the sounds of grief and fear around her. Even when facing death, the mother still told her daughter firmly about how much she loved her, and put her body over her daughter, trying to protect her as much as she could. Fortunately, the plane landed safely. No one was hurt in the emergency. However, the mother’s love for her daughter showed people what real courage was.

I told him that I heard a snapping sound when I stumble and fell. But he, my husband, not only dismissed what I said but also contended that it must have been the strap on my shoes snapping. Therefore, we didn’t know my foot was broken because he didn’t send me to a doctor even though my foot was swollen like a balloon. During the 12-hour flight to the airport, he left me alone in the borrowed wheelchair and pretended that he didn’t notice my gestures indicating the need of going to the bathroom.

This day, as I entered my class, some gossip came into my ears. It was about a new freshman girl from China, who aroused my curiosity. I wanted to meet the mysterious figure and I did. The Assistant Dean called me over to take the girl to her afternoon activity. So we started our journey. The first stop was her dorm. Half of the room was so tidy that it was hard to tell whether there was existence of human beings. The other half was totally a mess. Of course, the neat half belonged to the Chinese girl.

The reason why the value of the assets we possess depreciates quickly is that we already have the ownership and we may lose interest in them. Under this circumstance, these items can be used for collaborative consumption. The relevant shows us that traditional sharing already transformed into rental business which will thrive in the following decade. Considering the growth of population, collaborative consumption conforms to the trend – sharing, bartering, trading and renting. The biggest challenge of collaborative consumption is streamlining operations because people may need or want the same item at the same time. In this on-going world with resources which are declining in amount, we have no choice but to collaborate with others, even strangers to spread the wealth.。
