Book Report on The Tale of Two Cities
Book Report on The Tale of Two Cities The book which I have read is A Tale of Two Cities, whose writer is Charles Dic kens.Charles Dickens is the famous English writer who born in1812.Because of the urgency of life,he ever dropped out of school to become child labor when he is a teen ager, and he also worked in Law firm and Newspaper office when he grew up.He also has other works except A Tale of Two Cities. For example,David Copperfield,Oliver Twist,Hard Times,Great Expectations and so on.The book of mine was published in Nanjing Yilin Publishing House in2016.It's the First edition,Its main argument is to use the historical experience of the French Revolution as a wake-up call to the British rulers. Its idea is to fully promote the humanitarian thought and express its condemnat ion of the violent revolutionary attitude under the guidance of revenge.A Tale of Two Cities is divided into three sections. The theme of the first part is R ecalled to Life, the second part called The Golden Thread, and the third is The Track of a Storm. The first part telling the society of Britain and France in extreme confusio n.Cruncher sent a letter to Lorry, and then Lorry helped Lucie find and rescue Doctor Manette. It can be seen that Lorry is an economically intelligent and moral person,an d Lucie is a kind and gentle girl.Meanwhile,it expressed the brutal rule of the nobles, and the great suffering of the people. The second part wrote Charles Darnay was fram ed and jailed,Sydney Carton helped him defend and succeed. Then,Marquis Evremo nde runs down a plebeian child with his carriage and Darnay accused him and gave up the identity of the nobleman. After Darnay left,Marquis Evremonde was assassinated by"Jacques".Darnay married Lucie and confessed his identity to Doctor Manette. At this point, the revolutionaries represented by Madame Defarge are secretly brewing th e revenge.In1789,the French Revolution broke out,and Paris was put in prison and wrote to Darnay, who set out to France in spite of his personal safety. From this part,it can be seen that the noble and brave and honest in Darnay,Carton's apparent idlenes s and he was not pursued,as opposed to Darnay,Darnay's sincere love with Lucie,Do ctor Manette's merciful and loving father. The brutal rule of the aristocrats over the ci vilian population aroused radical resistance against the civilian population. In that last part,Darnay arrived in France and was arrested, and Manette saved him with his infl uence in the revolutionaries, but Defarge and his wife charged Darnay,he was arreste d again, and Carton came to Paris and planned to save Darnay,But Defarge took out t he letter about the reasons for Manette's detention at Darnay's trial.Darnay was senten ced to death. At that night,Carton swindled with him to replace the death penalty in D arnay.Madame Defarge came to Lucie's place to make Lucie and their children execut e when Darnay,Lucie, their children and Doctor Manette left Paris,in her scuffle with Miss Pross, she accidentally shot herself. Finally,Carton was taken to the guillotine. From this part can see Carton deeply loved Lucie that makes Carton become a exalted man and even surpass Darnay.Madame Defarge was cruel and ruthless. From the oth er side,It reflects that in the class struggle, the brutality of the aristocrats forced the re venge of the people at the bottom to become distorted and radical. In all the book,in my opinion, its character is humor satirizes without losing its t rue lyricism. For example,When the barrel fell, everyone rushed to the ground to drin k.It satirizes the aristocrats'abuse of farmers. At the same time,it is also ironic to des cribe adults serving him with four servants to drink chocolate. The author has criticize d the corrupt society of the oppressed peasants through this kind of humor and the sati rical. When Lucie first met her father,Lucie moved her father with kindness and affec tion, through her care, her father returned to normal. At the same time,in terms of Ca rton's willingness to accept the death penalty for Darnay, that also shows the writing st yle of the real lyric of the work.Meanwhile,I also think this work has a strong realisti c style and is a realistic literary work.As a whole, this work are based on the FrenchRevolution and take the resistance of the bottom people to the aristocracy as the main line. This is similar to the social situation of the time of the author's life. That is,the s queeze of capitalists on civilians during the industrial revolution, the poor are trapped in poverty and despair. This has a strong realistic style.I think this novel is intertwined with political struggle and emotional entangleme nt.It is to the effect that a noble nobleman is in love with the daughter of a doctor wh o is persecuted by the noble. But because of the aristocracy,he was in prison, and the last sentence was sentenced to death. His last imprisonment was influenced by the resi stance of the revolutionaries of the French Revolution, and Carton changed the cold,a nd fell in love with Lucie, and went to death replace Darnay. The cruel and ruthless Madame Defarge finally died. The central view of the novel is to praise the idea of hu manitarianism, and love to triumph over hate.In the article, the revolutionary who wa s represented by Madame Defarge's brutal and merciless resistance, this is a loss of hu manitarianism.Doctor Manette's forgiveness of the family in Darney, which embodies the understanding and inclusion.Carton died in place of Darnay, this is the result of t he influence of love. This is a reflection of the humanitarian. And Madame Defarge su ffered for herself by retaliating against Lucie. This reflects the punishment for brutal a nd ruthless revenge on the revolutionaries. At the same time it expressed Charles Dick ens's promotion of love, the brutality of the nobles, and the sympathy for the dark life of the peasants. To express the sympathy of Charles Dickens for the suffering of the p oor in the real world, and his hope for a better society.。

BookReportonATaleofTwoCities(共5篇)第一篇:Book Report on A Tale of Two CitiesBook Report on A Tale of Two CitiesCharles Dickens, English novelist, generally considered the greatest of the Victorian period. Dickens's works are charactericized by attacks on social evils, injustice, and hypocrisy. He had also experienced in his youth oppression, when he was forced to end school in early teens and work in a factory. Dickens's lively good, bad and comic characters have fascinated generations of readers. The story is set in London and Paris at the time of the great French Revolution. It is 1775, and Mr. Jarvis Lorry is traveling to Dover to meet Lucie Manette and tells her that he will travel with her to Paris to meet her father, who has recently been released from the Bastille. Five years later, Charles Darnay is tried in London on a charge of treason for providing English secrets to the French and Americans during the outbreak of the American Revolution. The dramatic appearance of Mr. Sydney Carton, who looks remarkably like him, precludes any positive identification and allows Darnay's acquittal. Darnay, Mr. Carton, and Mr. Stryver all fall in love with Lucie Manette. But she favors Charles Darnay and marries him. In France, Darnay's uncle, Monseigneur, has been murdered in his bed for crimes against the French people. At the urgent request of Monsieur Gabelle, who has been arbitrarily imprisoned, Darnay returns to Paris. He is arrested as a nobleman and an emigrant and thrown into jail. A spy named John Barsad drops into the Defarges' wine-shop and reveal practically nothing, although Madame Defarge is knitting a list of those whom she and the other revolutionaries intend to kill.Doctor Manette, Miss Pross, Lucie, and her small child follow Darnay to Paris. But Darnay is once again denounced by the Defarges. Darnay is brought back to prison and sentenced to death. Sydney Carton also has traveled to Paris. He resolves to sacrifice himself to save her husband's life. He uses his influence with Barsad to get into Darnay's cell. He drugs Darnay and exchanges places with him. Madame Defarge knocks on Lucie's door to arrest her, but the Manettes have already fled to safety. She is instead confronted with the extremely protective Miss Pross, who comes to blows with her and accidentally shoots her dead with her own gun. Darnay returns with the Manettes to London in safety. Carton dies in Darnay's place at the guillotine, satisfied with the knowledge of his good deed.A Tale of Two Cities as its background is written with social life of England and France social life before and after French Revolution in 18 century. It specifically describes the feudal aristocracy living with luxuries, abuses their power in politics, and their cruel exploitation of squeezes the urban poor and the rural farmers. It realistically portrays the violent revolution arisen by the social conflict uncompromised. It also reflects the terror and chaotic scene caused by the wildly excited civilian who could never endure the long oppression by the aristocrats. Through these descriptions, Dickens warned the British rulers to learn from that to restrain the power, correct their malpractice and implement social improvement, so as to smooth the social confrontation, and avoid the repetition of the French violent revolution. This is the writing purpose of A Tale of Two Cities, and it is achieved by the description of the main characters. In the process of description, the idea of liberty, equality and fraternity, which is the slogan of French Revolution, is ingeniouslypublicized.第二篇:Book report on A Tale of Two CitiesBook report on A T ale of Two CitiesName: 陆一蓝Class:1010Date:Dec. 12Abstract:Charles Dickens is an outstanding English writer in 19th century. He lived in Britain from the semi-feudal society to industrial capitalism transition period,so in the early time, his most works describe children’s unfortunate lives and revealed charitable institutions and school education’s crime. His work s revealed and criticized the capitalist class’s greedy, cruel governance. His works describe every aspects of social life of this period.Body:Dickens is the representative novelist of realistic literature in 19th century.Realism reflects real life. It is objective and it advocate observing real life objectively and always keeping a calm attitude. Persons in the novels are all very similar to the persons in the real life.Dickens’ works are full of humorous. His works analyses persons in details. Besides,His literary style is also a mixture of fantasy and realism. Introduction:This fictional story happened during the Great French Revolution around the Manette family and the two cities are London and Paris. Doctor Manettte had been in prison for 18 years j ust because he wanted to disclose Evermondes’ crimes. Marquis of Evermonde, a noble man in France, stole a countrywoman with his brother by force and killed her family. Doctor Manette came to know all their crimes by accident. In order to hide their crimes, they threw Manette intoBastille .During these 18 years, Doctor Manette lost is freedom completely and suffered a lot in spirit. He was taken care of by Monsieur Defarge, his maid, before his daughter found her. Then she took him to London. His daughter took good care of him and helped him return to normal. They came to know Sydney Carton and Charles Darnay, both of whom fell in love with Lucie later, during a court. Sydney expressed his love to Miss Lucie, promising that he would do everything for her happiness. However, he didn’t mean to marry Lucie since he thought he was not a proper man for Lucie. Meanwhile, Lucie and Darnay fell in love with each other. Doctor Manette accepted his son-in-law although he knew that Darnay was the nephew of the man who threw him into prison. One day, Darnay had to return to Paris to rescue his uncle’s chamberlain who had been taking care of property for Darnay. Before Darnay set off, Mr. Lorry went to Paris to deal with something for Tellson’s Bank at the age of 78 years old. Unfortuntely, Darnay was arrested and put into prison. Lucie got the news and went to Paris with his father immediately. Luckily, Doctor Manette had been in Bastille for a long time, so Paris citizen respected Doctor Manette so much after they knew his experience. At last, Darnay got out of prison. However, Darnay was taken away again the next morning. In fact, Madame Defarge was the sister of the woman who was killed by Marquis ofEvermonde. She had the obligation to take revenge on everyone from Evermonde family. Lucie, as his wife, was in a deep sadness. Old Lorry also felt anxious. Then it was the time for Sydney Carton to do something. Carton sacrificed his life for Lucie’s happiness. He fulfilled his promise. He got into the prison and Darnay was taken out of there instead. The Manettefamily managed to return to London. Carton, left in Paris, was killed to the face of thousands of people.Analysis of Sydney carton:Sydney carton, a hero, a touching character. He has a same appearance withDarnay but completely different fate. He loved Lucie but he was afraid to disturb her life. He sacrifice his life to make Lucie get happiness. Conclusion:In this work, we can not only see a story about a family, a touching love story, but also the situation of the whole society at that time. Just as the novel described at the beginning,“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”No equality and no fairness. Many people were killed everyday, who were thesacrifice of that time. Dickens has distinct love and hate. He praised those who ought to be praised and attacked those who ought to be attacked.第三篇:Book-report——A tale of two citiesA Book-Report of a Tale of Two CitiesA Tale of Two Cities is a masterpiece written by Charles Dickens. The book that I read has 428 pages and was published by the Tsinghua University Press in 2009. It costs 39 Yuan.I chose this book to read because I admire the author, Charles Dickens. He created vast collection of characters in his vivid novels. He focus was always on the individual rather than on abstract theories. Thus I could read the story with fewer difficulties. Charles Dickens was an excellent novelist. It was the quality of his writing that makes him popular with readers even today.A Tale of Two Cities is a sad and touching story. It took place in the London and Paris during French Revolution. Doctor Manette has been put into prison for 18 years as a result of his efforts of exposing the Evremonde family’s evil. However, for the sake of his daughter’s happiness, he agreed his daughter Lucie to marry his enemy’s son---Charles Darnay. Innocent Darnay condemned wickedness of his family and gave up the Evremonde title as well as all the property. Nevertheless due to he’s family background, he was put into prison in F rench by the outrageous people in French Revolution. A young lawyer named Sydney Carton fell in love with Lucie. He decided to die for Darnay for the sake of Lucie’s happiness. The family of1 Manette finally escaped back to England safely while Carton departed to them for ever.Sydney Carton was my favorite character in this book. He was the person whose words were sharp but heart was kind. I was sure that he loved Lucie no less than Charles. Thought he had confronted his love to Lucie, after Lucie and Darn ay’s wedding, he chose not to disturb her happiness. When Darnay was sentenced to death, Sydney Carton tried his best to rescue Darnay at the expense of his own life. I was deeply touched by this tragic ending. After all, few people could do that as him.Doctor Manette was a just and respectful man. When he witnessed the terrible crime of the Evremonde family, he felt it was his duty to inform the government minister, which resulted in his longtime imprisonment. 18 years later, thought he knew Charles Darna y was his enemy’s son, he gave up revenge and accepted the marriage because he loved daughter and wanted her to be happy. Madame Defarge was totally opposite to Doctor Manette. Her family was ruined by the Evremonde family whenshe was a little girl, thus she didn’t let go any chances to revenge Darnay, even thought Darnay had nothing to do with those wickedness. Grudge had already taken charge of her mind. She even wanted to hurt Darnay’s innocent wife Lucie and their child. T o forgive or not, it is a question.Madame Defarge and Doctor Manette, both of them suffered from brutal persecution. The former chose to forgive because of love while the later never gave up her revenge until she was killed. I sometimes assumed that women were more sensitive than men, so it is harder for women to abandon grudge. If I were one of them, I would probably never forgive but I would never hurt someone innocent. It was really ashamed that I couldn’t bring myself to do as Doctor Manette.A Tale of Two Cities was an excellent story. Once you begin to read it, you would be absorbed in it. Well organized plot, vivid description, especially the love between characters would inspire your desire to finish reading this book.第四篇:Reading report on A Tale of Two CitiesReading report on A Tale of Two CitiesA Tale of Two Cities is one of Dickens's most important representative works. With the broad real background of the French Revolution, the author takes the fictional character Doctor Manette's experience as the main clue, interweaves three independent but incidently cross-correlated stories-- the unjust charge, love and revenge together. In A Tale of Two Cities, the plot is criss-crossed and the clue is complex., which shows Dickens's language skill. In the novel, the author shapes three kinds of characters: feudal aristocracy, revolutionary masses and the idealized figures. Every character has his own characteristics. Doctor Manette ishonest and kind but suffers the persecution actually. Lucie is beautiful and gentle. Charles is graceful and noble. Lorry is upright and honest. Sydney is indifferent, unconventional but also selfless and lofty. Miss Pross is straightforward and loyal. Evremonde brothers are cruel and sinister...The complex hatred is hard to solve; the cruel revenge has made more hatreds;loves rebirth in the hell edge, but take the life as the price. Through the three kinds of characters, Dickens emphasizes three main aspects: the disapproval of the nobility’s oppression towards the poor and the revolution, humanism, as well as love.Evremonde brothers are the representatives of the feudal aristocracy. They are cruel to their people. They steal a woman, destroy her family’sland, take their food, and kill her brother. When Doctor Manette finds thetruth, he is taken to the prison and spends 18 years there. The younger Evremonde brother even hits a peasant’s child to death. Here Dickensdescribes the French famers’ miserable sufferings with great sypathy and condemns the feudal aristocracy for their evils.Madame Defarge is a representative of the revolutionary masses. She is the younger sister of the poor woman killed by the Evremonde brothers. And she holds great hatred to them, even their whole family. She remembers everything and knits every name into her work. Finally, she rushs into the Bastille and kills its officers. In order to revenge, she makes great efforts to send Darnay and his family to death, unluckily, she is shot to death by her own gun at last. She fights for violence and evils, but also dies of them. In the novel, many innocent men and women dies for no reason, and everyday brings more deaths. Through Madame Defarge’s death, Dickens expresses his disapproval towardsrevolutions. Any form of oppression should be prevented, either the feudal aristocracy’s persecut ion to their people or the peasants’ revolt to the nobility.Charles is the nephew of a marquis, but he abandones the privilege and moves to London. There he works hard to earn his living and manages to be a French teacher. Later he marries Lucie. One day, Darnay receives a letter from Monsieur Gabelle, who has been arrested and taken to Paris. In order to save his old servant, Darnay goes back to France, but he is arrested and sentenced to death. As to Carton, he slips into the prison with the help of Mr. Barsad, changes Darnay’s clothes and dies for him. The contrastbetween Darnay and Carton’s self-sacrifice spirits and the revolutionists’ violence emphasizes their noble qualities and heroical behaviours. They reflect Dickens's idea of humanism.Love is also a very important elemant in the novel. When he knowns whose son Darnay is, Doctor Manette keeps his feelings secret for his daughter’s happiness. And Carton’s love towards Lucie is more moving.“But you should know that for you, or for everyone close to you, I would do anything. Please remember always, that there is a man who would give his life to keep someone you love alive and close to you.”Above is Carton’s promise to Lucie, and he finally sacrifice himself to save Darnay because of his deep and great love to her.Dickens accords great importance to love. With the love as the tie, Doctor Manette, Darnay and Lucie form a happy family. It’s a very different way from revolution to solve the society contradiction. Here Dickens not only praises love, but also indicates his hope for a harmonious society.A Tale of Two Cities is a famous realistic novel. In thebeginning, Dickens describes a vivid picture of the society of that time. Even though the relations among the characters are a little complex, he clearly states the story and conveys his ideas.班级:07英师本6班学号: 070201615姓名:雷丽冰第五篇:Book Review on A Tale of Two Cities班级:14英师3班姓名:纪露露学号:14010103012 Book Review on A Tale of Two CitiesA Tale of Two Cities is a novel by Charles Dickens, which set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. Written in 1859, A Tale of Two Cities was published in weekly installments from April 1859 to November 1859 in Dickens's new literary periodical titled All the Year Round. All but only three of Dickens's previous novels had appeared as monthly installments. After published, A Tale of Two Cities was an instant hit. Families read it by the firelight; crowds waited for the next edition to be released. With sales of about 200 million copies, A T ale of Two Cities is the biggest selling novel in history. By this time Dickens was one of the most prominent writers and editors in England. At times, Dickens's prose emanates pure beauty that's so missed in most of contemporary works. In this book, Dickens has created a broad cast of characters, of two nations and multiple social classes and political affiliations, and effortlessly weaved their stories. That is the reason why Charles Dickens is one of the most popular storytellers and this particular novel is world's bestselling work of fiction. A Tale of Two Cities depicts the plight of the French peasantry exploited by the French aristocracy, which lead to the revolution and many social phenomenas paralleling with life in London during the same period. In 1757, for knowing a secret, Dr. Manette, a French physician, was picked up and sent to the Bastille by the aristocracy MarquisSt. Evremonde. 18 years after, Alexandre Manette was released from the Bastille. Mr. Lorry, one of the bank's managers, arrives in Dover and meets with Dr. Manette's daughter Lucie who has believed her father to be dead and her governess, Miss Pross. Mr. Lorry takes her to France to reunite with her father who has been given lodgings by Defarge, owners of a wine shop. In 1780, Charles Darnay is on trial for treason against the British. And Darnay's defense counsel directs attention to Sydney Carton, a barrister present in the courtroom who looks almost identical to him.In Paris, Marquis St. Evrémonde’ s carriage hits and kills the child of a peasant, Gaspard. At that night, Gaspard kills the Marquis in his sleep. In London, Darnay gets Dr. Manette's permission to wed Lucie; but Carton confesses his love to Lucie as well. Knowing she will not love him in return, Carton promises to do any sacrifice for her. On the morning of the marriage, Darnay reveals his real name and family lineage to Dr. Manette( Darnay is Marquis’ s nephew). As time passes, Lucie and Charles begin to raise a family. Carton is accepted as a close friend of the family and becomes a special favorite of little Lucie. In 1789, the Defarges help to lead the storming of the Bastille. The St. Evrémonde’ s chateau is burned to the ground. In 1792, Mr. Lorry travels to Paris to collect important documents. Darnay receives a letter written by Gabelle, one of his uncle's servants who have been imprisoned by the revolutionaries. Without telling his family or revealing his position as the new Marquis, Darnay sets out for Paris. After Darnay arrives in Paris, he is denounced for being an emigrated aristocrat from France and jailed in prison. Dr. Manette, Lucie and Miss Pross travel to Paris and meet Mr. Lorry to try to free Darnay. But after being released,Darnay is immediately arrested again. At this time, Carton met Solomon and identifies him. By threatening to denounce Solomon to the revolutionary tribunal, Carton blackmails him into helping with a plan. When Carton wanders into the Defarges' wine shop, he discovers that Madame Defarge was the surviving sister of the peasant family savaged by the Evrémondes. At night, Carton urges Lorry to flee Paris with Lucie, her father, asking them to leave as soon as he joins them in the coach. Shortly before the executions are to begin, Solomon sneaks Carton into the prison for a visit with Darnay. The two men trade clothes, and Carton drugs Darnay and let Solomon carry him out. Carton has decided to be executed in his place. Following Carton's earlier instructions, the family and Mr. Lorry flee to England with the unconscious Darnay. Meanwhile, Miss Pross kills Madame Defarge by mistake. Picking up this book was a brave move. This book was also a strong commentary regarding the Revolution. It was interesting to see the ironic way in which Dickens compares the aristocracy to the angry revolutionaries. The revolutionaries are mad for the aristocracy hurting and killing the innocent. Then, they turn around and start killing plenty of innocent people like the aristocracy just for the sake of watching their heads roll. The comparison in A T ale of Two Cities could be the theme of the novel, but the contrast alluded to in the titleallows Dickens to make a separate point. While Miss Pross represents England and a sense of English superiority, Dickens is not merely dredging up the ages old English-French conflict; he's saying something more subtle: that London at the time he was writing was a hair's breadth away from Paris during The Terror. These conditions, in which human brutality and cruelty arise and dominate for a time, are predictable, repeatable. That there is two side to the coin: thebest of times and the worst of times; wisdom and foolishness; hope and despair exist side by side all times, all places. So the point of Carton's prophetic observations at the end is that in the blink of an eye, positions will be switched. But as contrast, Dickens is always an optimist. People have the capacity for good, retribution and vengeance will never match and outlast generosity and goodness; and love will, in the end, triumph. I am in awe of Dickens's ability to craft characters whose defining personality traits make them strongly through the story. And his depiction of France before and during the Revolution is vivid and bloody. For anyone who has read Dickens, the coined phrase "Dickinsonian characters" is highly accurate. The depth he goes to make us fall in love with them and his talent for describing their character so accurately is surely one of his greatest talents and should be always noted in his work. Besides the character and plot building aptitude, Dickens rouses every major emotion of mankind into this tale. The themes Dickens expounds upon are vast. From love to bitterness, from revenge to heroism, from sacrifice to friendship, and back to love again, he touches upon them all. This story covers almost all of the major themes in literature. Man struggling against nature, overcoming adversity, death being part of the life cycle, and of course, sacrifice, are just some of them. These struggles of man nature are also seen in echoes of other scenes, such as Manette's attempts with letting go of his time in prison as he makes his shoes, the memories of his time there still torturing him, and Lucie’s habit of sitting in her parlor as she hears the echo of the footsteps in the street, bringing a foreboding of what's to come combined with her personal battles and the political conflicts of the age.As there are so many meaningful quotes in this novel, I’dlike to talk something about my favorite quotes which make me think a lot. “Crush humanity out of shape onc e more, under similar hammers, and it will twist itself into the same tortured forms. Sow the same seed of rapacious license and oppression over again, and it will surely yield the same fruit according to its kind.”Dickens wrote A Tale of Two Cities sixty years after the revolution ended. In other words, human suffering isn’t simply an 18th-century French problem. A Tale of Two Cities, with all of the poverty and injustice it displays, is an exploration of conditions that will persist just as long as violence and inequity continue to flourish. "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known." A Tale of Two Cities is a novel that works on several levels. Most study it as social commentary about the French Revolution, but the theme that touches me most is love, which is overly sentimental. But the real topic of this book is love: the power of love makes us human, and it also gives us power to do things that we would never dream of doing. It is bravery, devotion and dedication that give ordinary people strength and allow us to be more than human. I firmly believe that in the end love is one of the few things that matters. Read A T ale of Two Cities. Charles Dickens will tell you that and so much more, in words that are immortal a and magnificent. So overall, I truly enjoyed reading this book even though I was impatient to see the action start a little quicker. Charles Dickens’s novel has helped to shape generations of readers’ under standing of love and one of the most pivotal events in modern history, French Revolution. Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton may not have appeared in the history, but they’re stamped in our culturalmemory as key figures in the French Revolution. Dickens succeeds in making the French Revolution live in the hearts and minds of his readers.。

OFATALEOFTWOCITIES1《双城记》英文读书笔记
A book report of a Tale of two CitiesBy Charles DickensA Tale of two Cities is written by the English writer Charles Dickens who was bom in 1812 and died in 1870. Best known for his classic serialized novels, such as Oliver Twist, a Tale of two Cities, and Great Expectations, he wrote about the London he lived in, the conditions of the poor, and the growing tensions between the classes. He achieved international popular and critical success in his lifetime.Based on his own personal experiences of working in a factory, a Tale of two Cities is one of his later works. The story was set in London and Paris at the time of the great French Revolution. It exposed the causes of revolution and its effects on people's day-to-day lives. Moreover it mingled two different clues, love and cruelty. Before the revolution, the King and the aristocracy treated then- people cruelly. Extremely poor and miserable, the common people were lived under sanguinary policy and great pressure. The crops in the fields were poor as if even the land shared the misery of the people. And there were so heavy taxes that all the villagers had nothing to hand over at last. On the other hand, the aristocracy made their will as the law by using money and gold. There was no justice, no equality and no fairness. Just as what happened to Dr. Manette, he had witnessed the crimes committed by the Marquis Evremonde brothers. He wrote to the Minister to disclose the crime what Marquis Evremonde had done. But as a result, he had been arrested and sent to the prison Bastille without any reason. The potential of people was tremendous. People who lived on the bottom of class such as the Defarges had prepared for a revolution. The Revolution came to break out, when the Bastille was captured and the King was caught and put to death as well as many other aristocrats. However, things didn't go on as what they had ever expected. As a consequence, the situation was not changed at all or even worse, as the fundamental tissue had not been resolved. There was still no justice or fairness. As it was quote, in everything they did was merciless, for they had been hardened in the fires of suffering and the touch of pity could make no mark on them. Those people took the charge but their heart had been full of evilness. The only thing they wanted to do was to revenge. These former peasants murdered anyone who they felt represented the old guard. One of the characters Damay was immediately taken into custody, though he tried desperately to explain that unlike his uncle and father-the Evremonde brothers. Actually he was not a cruel man and knew nothing about his family. He was on the peasants5 side and wanted to help them. But without reason they disregarded his testimony.Love was as pure as water, Carton had a deeply love towards Lucie, wife of Damay that he devoted his life for her happiness. When Damay was sentenced to death, he used his physical resemblance to Damay and his abilityto manipulate the spy to pull off the ultimate sacrifice. As a conclusion, with the broad real background of the French Revolution, Charles Dickens told us a story about cruelty, revenge and love.。

Book-report——Ataleoftwocities
Book-report——Ataleoftwocities第一篇:Book-report——A tale of two citiesA Book-Report of a Tale of Two CitiesA Tale of Two Cities is a masterpiece written by Charles Dickens. The book that I read has 428 pages and was published by the Tsinghua University Press in 2009.It costs 39 Yuan.I chose this book to read because I admire the author, Charles Dickens. He created vast collection of characters in his vivid novels. He focus was always on the individual rather than on abstract theories. Thus I could read the story with fewer difficulties.Charles Dickens was an excellent novelist. It was the quality of his writing that makes him popular with readers even today.A Tale of Two Cities is a sad and touching story. It took place in the London and Paris during French Revolution.Doctor Manette has been put into prison for 18 years as a result of his efforts of exposing the Evremonde family’s evil. However, for the sake of his daughter’s happiness, he agreed his daughter Lucie to marry his enemy’s son---Charles Darnay.Innocent Darnay condemned wickedness of his family and gave up the Evremonde title as well as all the property.Nevertheless due to he’s family background, he was put into prison in French by the outrageous people in French Revolution.A young lawyer named Sydney Carton fell in love with Lucie. He decided to die for Darnay for the sake of Lucie’s happiness. The family of1Manette finally escaped back to England safely while Carton departed to them for ever.Sydney Carton was my favorite character in this book.He was the person whose words were sharp but heart was kind.I was sure that he loved Lucie no less than Charles.Thought he had confronted his love to Lucie, afterLucie and Darnay’s wedding, he cho se not to disturb her happiness. When Darnay was sentenced to death, Sydney Carton tried his best to rescue Darnay at the expense of his own life.I was deeply touched by this tragic ending. After all, few people could do that as him.Doctor Manette was a just and respectful man. When he witnessed the terrible crime of the Evremonde family, he felt it was his duty to inform the government minister, which resulted in his longtime imprisonment.18 years later, thought he knew Charles Darnay was his enemy’s son, he gave up revenge and accepted the marriage because he loved daughter and wanted her to be happy.Madame Defarge was totally opposite to Doctor Manette. Her family was ruined by the Evremonde family when she was a little girl, thus she didn’t let go any chances to revenge Darnay, even thought Darnay had nothing to do with those wickedness.Grudge had already taken charge of her mind. She even wanted to hurt Darnay’s innocent wife Lucie and their child.T o forgive or not, it is a question.Madame Defarge and Doctor Manette, both of them suffered from brutal persecution. The former chose to forgive because of love while the later never gave up her revenge until she was killed.I sometimes assumed that women were more sensitive than men, so it is harder for women to abandon grudge. If I were one of them, I would probably never forgive but I would never hurt someone innocent. It was really ashamed that I couldn’t bring myself to do as Doctor Manette.A T ale of Two Cities was an excellent story.Once you begin to read it, you would be absorbed in it.Well organized plot, vivid description, especially the love between characters would inspire your desire to finish reading this book.第二篇:双城记英文简介 bookreport专用A Tale of Two Cities It was the year 1757, the doctor Manette lived in Pairs. And one day he treated a young blood of the people!Court decided to executeCharles by guillotine in twenty-four hours.Everyone felt painful and hopeless except Madame Defarge.Someone can ask why Madame Defarge hated Chale so much and why she still wanted to kill him? Now, please look at block broad. Can you remember that ME hurt a young lady and killed the lady’s husband? Madame Defarge was the last survivor in this pathetic family.Until now, whole things became clear and reasonable. When Carton saw Lucie’s pale face and hop eless eye, he felt some swords penetrated into his heart. He made a holy and brave decision. He decided to save Charles who was in prison and replaced him to die because of loving Lucie. At that time, Madame Defarge was saturated into revenge, so she brought pistol to Lucie’s apartment. She not only wanted to kill Charles, but also wanted to kill his whole family. She had been deeply indulged in the revenge. On the fight between Madame Defarge and Lucie’s servant, Defarge was killed by her pistol.Soon Carton went to the prison and bribed a prison official to let him go into the prison. Then, he drunk Charles and exchanged their clothes. Finally, the prison official brought Charles to Lucie’s apartment. The last minute came and Carton was brought to the guillotine. As his cart rumbled toward the platform, he turned his eyes toward London and said: I see them holding a special place for me in their hearts, remembering me with love.Yes, this is a far, far better thing that I am doing than anything I have ever done in my life.END 因为爱情简单的生长依然随时可以为你疯狂因为爱情怎么会有沧桑所以我们还是年轻的模样第三篇:鲁宾逊漂流记读后感 Bookreport of Robinson CrusoeA Book Report of Robinson CrusoeHave you ever wondered what you would do if you were the only person on a desert island? How many days can you survive? Day or days?Daniel Defoe dramatizes such an experience in Robinson Crusoe, an adventure story about a man named Robinson Crusoe who is stranded on a desert island for 28 years. This book is one of the forerunners of the English realistic novel, which is based on a real experience of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived four years on the Pacific island.Defoe develops the sailor's story with his own imagination. As the struggle of man vs.nature and man vs.man is so interesting to read, I keep myattention on the story until the very end.As a bourgeois writer, Daniel Defoe shows his ideas about the rising bourgeois class in his book.He creates the image of Robinson Crusoe, a typical of the rising English bourgeois class in the 18th century.Robinson Crusoe is a practical, diligent and religious person with a restless curiosity to know more about the world. He is never content with his current life and he is longing for adventures. All his characters indicate the bourgeoisie's dissatisfactions with their situations at that time and their desires for extension in the world.Another thing delivering through the whole story is individualism. With the influence of the Renaissance and the Industrial Revolution, more and more people are being interested in individualism, especially the bourgeois class. And from the story of Robinson Crusoe, we can see his desire to prove individual power in the face of social and natural challenges.Although his bad luck puts him alone on a desolate island, he doesn't lose his belief to survive.Alone on the island, Robinson Crusoe overcomes many difficulties: hunger, loneliness, the fight against disease etc.Of course he is only an ordinary person and he also has fears andgets puzzled at the beginning. We can see that he is in despair and qu estiones himself “Why did God put me on this island all alone ?” But later he gets out of despair and does all he can to find out ways to provide himself with residence, food, and tools. He salvages things from a wrecked ship and makes full use of them.Just as the proverb says, “God helps those who help themselves”.With great will and strength, Robinson Crusoe creats for himself a kingdom by taming animals, gathering fruit, growing crops, and hunting. He also makes a calendar to remind himself of the world. It is his marvelous capacity for work, his boundless courage and energy in overcoming obstacles that make him a hero. And in the story, Daniel Defoe also sings the praises of human labour, presenting it as the source of pride and happiness as well as a means to change man's living conditions. However, Daniel Defoe also beautifies colonialism and slavery in the story., which I think is the limitation of his class and the times.Obviously, Robinson Crusoe is a colonist. For example he puts up a sign as his landing monument after he sets foot on the island. He also thinks he owns Friday's life and wants Friday to be obedient just because he saves Friday and gives Friday a name as a man. Moreover, Robinson Crusoe's adventures is not only for survival, but also for occupancy of wealth and land. All in all, it's no wonder that Robinson Crusoe is a successful realistic novel. On one hand, it glorifies the individualism and tells a story of ordinary people in plain and simple language;on the other hand, it shows a vivid and positive picture of he rising English bourgeois class at its early stage of development.。

Book Report of A Tale of Two Cities
Book Report of A Tale of Two Cities—A story about love and sacrifice in the revolutions in Paris and LondonThe book talks about the things in “the best and the worst of times”,and it makes us to think about lots of things like revolutions、sacrifices、love and so on at that times and our times more further than we did at usual time. After reading the book, I can’t help thinking of how we could deal with our relationships with all kinds of people surrounding us when we get into troubles or are forced to face a tough times in our life. It also tells us that we ought to love each other and it’s love and mercy what work out to make a better world.Book information:Charles John Huffam Dikens. A Tale of Two Cities. Wordsworth Editions Ltd. 1992.Introduction:It’s a book telling a story about love between love, justice and sacrifice in the French Revolutions when laws and regulations were totally ruined into a mess. At that violent time, people all struggled to live a little bit better. The book is beautifully written, because a lot of decriptive words and sentences are used and they make the characters lively for readers. It also uses brief andfunny descriptions, and never makes the readers confused or boring. For example, “they examined the signature by the dingiest of windows, which were always under a shower-bath of mud from Fleet Street…”. In the novel, we can always meet suspensions left which makes it more attractive to readers. There are also showing many striking contrasts that can give readers a strong feeling and deeper impressions. In a word, the book is worth reading.Author Evaluation:Charles Dickens (1812-1870) is one of the most popular novelists of his time, and remains one of the best known and most read of English authors. A Tale of Two Cities is his historical novel during the French Revolution.Charles Dikens is a typical humanitarian, who expressed his humanitarianism completely by his novels. His humanitarianism focused on morality as well as it based on morality. He advised people to be mercy and human, and he is a good example of humanitarian. For an instance, in A Tale of Two Cities, he showed deep sympathy to the poor. On the other hand, he strongly condemned the feudal aristocrats behavior. And he also held a greatest esteem for the love of the human being. He believed that love was always more powerful than resentment. In his opinion, no matter the person was rich or poor, if his behavior agreed with morality, it should be prised. If not, then it should be criticized. Therefore Dikens firmly believed the contradiction could be solved by the great love of human being. Plot Summary:A Tale of Two Cities tells a story that takes places in the siciety before and during the French Revolution. The author, Dikens, portrays the cruel noble and the king, those who do not care the people at all, and enjoy all the benefits and joyful lives. Therefore, the people can not stand for the government’s incompetence, trying to overthrow the government and to control Paris. However, there are still love and forgiveness in such violent times. The hatred and the violencecan not solve and release the sadness. Only the love and forgiveness can overcome all the hardships.Main Characters:Dr. Manette—kind, upright, sympathetic and forgiveness.Ⅰ、“I am a doctor,my poor fellow…let me examine it”, “it was under his hand, and I soothed him to let me move his hand away, the wound was a swordthrust…”Ⅱ、After 18 years in the prison, although he hates the Marquis of Evremonde, but when he knows his daughter falls in lovewith Charles Darnay, he accepts Darnay.Lucie Manette--kind, beautiful ,considerable and just like an angel.Ⅰ、“I think, Charles, Poor Mr. Carton deserves more consideration and respect than you expressed for him, to-night.” Ⅱ、“I would ask you, deare st, to be very generous with him always and very lenient on his faults when he is not by.”Jarvis Lorry--kind,heartwarming but never showing offⅠ、Miss Manete said “when I was left an orphan through my mother’s surviving my father only two years, it was you who brought me to England.”“Miss Manete, it was I. And you will see how truly I spoke of myself just now, in saying I had no feelings, and that all the relations I hold with my fellow-creatures are mere business relations…”Sydney Carton-- Self-sacrificeⅠ、“Miss Manette, I ask for none; I am even thankful that it cannot be.”Ⅱ、“For you, and for any dear to you, I would do anything. If my career were of that better kind that there was any opportunity or capacity of sacrifice in it, I would embrace anysacri fice for you and for those dear to you. ”Charles Darnay—descendant“Darnay’s willingness to atone for his family’s wrongs and to work for a living demonstration that eventually something good can come out of evil…”Theme :A Tale of Two Cities is essentially a tale of love ,sacrifice ,and, most importantly ,the resurrection. Dr.Manete, Charles Darnay, and Sydney Carton all desperate men leading catastrophic lives, make great sacrifices in order to attain true physical, spiritual, and societal resurrection for themselves and the ones they love. For me it’s hard to believe that people especially the main characters could struggle to be kind and would rather sacrifice themselves for the ones they love than being fraudulent to live better when they are in the background of the French Revolution. Dikens wrote humanity through the revolution’s angle. The book displayed the strong power of people and Dikens affirmed the justice and acquired that the revolution should be stopped appropriately.。

The plot centres on the years leading up to the French Revolution and culminates in the Jacobin Reign of Terror. It tells the story of two men, Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton, who look similar but are very different in personality. Darnay is a romantic French aristocrat, while Carton is a cynical English barrister. However, the two are in love with the same woman, Lucie Manette.Other major characters in the book include Dr. Alexandre Manette (Lucie's father), who was unjustly imprisoned in the infamous Bastille for many years under a lettre de cachet, and Madame Defarge, a female revolutionary with a grudge against the Evrémonde family.Plot summary[edit] Book the First: Recalled to LifeJarvis Lorry travels to Dover to meet a young woman, Lucie Manette, in 1775. When he arrives, he informs her that her father, Doctor Manette, whom she previously believed to be dead, has actually been incarcerated as a prisoner in Paris for the past eighteen years, and has recently been released by the French government. Tel lson’s Bank is sending Lorry to identify the doctor (who had been one of T ellson’s clients) and bring him to England. The news upsets Lucie greatly; he tries to comfort her,but Miss Pross takes over when she fears he has frightened Lucie too much. The story shifts abruptly to Saint Antoine, a suburb of Paris, where a cask of wine accidentally splits and spills on the ground. The poor seize the unexpected windfall, jubilantly drinking the wine off the street. Watching the degradation in disgust is Defarge, the owner of a wineshop and leader of a band of revolutionaries. Afterwards, she goes back into her shop and talks to a group of fellow revolutionaries, who call each other "Jacques".Mr. Lorry and Lucie Manette arrive and Defarge takes them to his apartment to see Dr. Manette. The doctor is, to all appearances, completely mad. He sits in a dark room all day making shoes, as he did while in prison. Lucie takes him to England.[edit] Book the Second: The Golden ThreadFive years later (1780), Dr. Manette has recovered from his ordeal. French emigre Charles Darnay is tried at the Old Bailey for spying. Those testifying against him are a John Barsad and a Roger Cly, who claim that he had been reporting on English troops in North America to the French. Dr. Manette and his daughter vouch for Darnay because he had sailed with them on their voyage to England. In the end, Darnay is acquitted because the witnesses are unable to tell him apart from junior defense counsel Sydney Carton, who bears a striking resemblance to him. Carton is depicted unflatteringly as a drunkard; conversely Darnay is set out as a handsome, gallant victim of a deficient British legal process. Carton becomes enamoured with Lucie and jealous of Darnay. In Paris, the Marquis St. Evrémonde, Darnay's uncle, isreturning from an audience with Monseigneur, one of the 'greatest lords in France', when his coach runs over and kills the son of the peasant Gaspard; he throws a coin to Gaspard to compensate him for his loss; in the assembled crowd is the implacable tricoteuse, Madame Defarge. She throws the money back, enraging the Marquis and leading him to exclaim that he would willingly kill any of the peasants of France. On his way back to his chteau, the Marquis passes through a village, where a road mender tells him that he saw a man clinging to the bottom of his carriage. The Marquis has his servant investigate, but no one is found.Darnay returns to France to meet his uncle. Their political positions are diametrically opposed: Darnay is a democrat, while the Marquis is an adherent of the ancien régime. The Marquis is portrayed as a cruel, heartless nobleman:"Repression is the only lasting philosophy. The dark deference of fear and slavery, my friend," observed the Marquis, "will keep the dogs obedient to the whip, as long as this roof," looking up to it, "shuts out the sky."That night, Gaspard, the man who had ridden underneath the carriage, murders the Marquis in his sleep. Gaspard is later captured and hanged for his crime.Returning to England, Darnay asks Dr. Manette for his consent to marry Lucie. He is not the only suitor however. Both Stryver, Carton's patron (by way of comic relief) and, more seriously, Carton himself, are captivated by her. Carton is the only one who reveals his feelings directly to Lucie--Stryver is convinced of the futility of his aspirations, and Darnay proposes the marriage to Dr. Manette. When Carton confesses his love to Lucie, he admits he is incapable of making her happy; she hasinspired him to lead a better life, but he lacks the energy to follow through. However, he promises to "embrace any sacrifice" for her or one that she loves. Meanwhile, Darnay agrees to reveal his true surname to Dr. Manette on the morning of his marriage to Lucie. In Paris, Monsieur and Madame Defarge foment Jacobin sympathies. Madame Defarge takes the long view, as opposed to her husband, who is impatient to bring on the revolution. They learn, from an informant within the police, that a spy is to be quartered in Saint Antoine. He is John Barsad, one of those who had given false testimony against Darnay. The following morning, Barsad enters the Defarges' wine shop, but Madame Defarge recognizes him from the description she had been given. Barsad acts as an agent provocateur and tries to lead her into discussing the impending execution of the unfortunate Gaspard. In the course of the conversation, he mentions that Darnay is to be married to Lucie Manette. On the morning of the marriage, Darnay, at Dr. Manette's request, reveals who his family is, a detail which Dr. Manette had asked him to withhold until then. Unfortunately, this unhinges Dr. Manette, who reverts to his obsessive shoemaking. His sanity is restored before Lucie returns from her honeymoon; to prevent a further relapse, Lorry destroys the shoemaking bench which Dr. Manette had brought with him from France.Later, in mid-July 1789, Jarvis Lorry visits the Darnays and tells them of the uneasiness in Paris. The scene cuts to the Saint Antoine fauborg for the storming of the Bastille, with the Defarges in the lead. With the hated prison in revolutionary hands, Defarge enters Dr. Manette's former cell. He uncovers a manuscript which the inmate had written during his confinement, hidden by that same inmate on the inside of a chimney, conde mning the Evrémondes, pere et fils (father and son), for his wrongful imprisonment and the destruction of his family. In the summer of 1792, a letter is delivered to Tellson's bank, addressed to the heir of the Marquis of Evrémonde. The letter recounts the news of the imprisonment of one of the Marquis' retainers, Gabelle, and beseeches the new Marquis to come to his aid. By chance, though the bank is unaware of his identity, Darnay receives the letter. He makes plans to travel to Paris, where the Reign of Terror is running its bloody course, blithely indifferent to the danger. Lorry is sent on ahead with a (cryptic) message to the imprisoned Gabelle that he is on his way.[edit] Book the Third: The Track of a StormIn Beauvais, erstwhile home of Dr. Manette, Darnay is denounced by the revolutionaries as an emigrant, an aristocrat, and a traitor. His military escort takes him to Paris, where he is imprisoned. Dr. Manette and Lucie along with Miss Pross, Jerry Cruncher, and the daughter of Charles and Lucie Darnay, "Little Lucie", leave London for Paris and meet with Mr. Lorry. Dr. Manette tries to use his influence as a well-known former prisoner of the Bastille to have his son-in-law freed. He manages to protect Darnay on the night that mobs kill thousands of less-fortunate prisoners. After a year and three months, Dr. Manette successfully defends Darnay at his trial. However, that evening, Darnay is put on trial again, under new charges brought by the Defarges and one unnamed other. While Miss Pross and Mr. Cruncher are on their way to the market, they stop at a tavern to buy wine. There, Miss Pross finds her long-lost brother, Solomon Pross, now a revolutionary official. Neither is happy with the meeting. Jerry Cruncher then recognizes him as John Barsad. Sydney Carton, to their surprise, joins the party and confirms this. He then blackmails Solomon Pross, telling him that he knows that he is a spy, as he had overheard his conversation inside the tavern, and a double agent, working for both the French and British governments at different times. Pross reluctantly gives in to Carton's demands. When Darnay is brought back before the revolutionary tribunal, he is confronted by Defarge, who identifies Darnay as the Marquis St. Evremonde and reads from the paper found in Dr. Manette's cell. The document describes how he had been locked away in the Bastille by the deceased Marquis Evrémonde and his twin brother for trying to report their horrific crimes against a peasant family. The younger brother had become infatuated with a girl. He had kidnapped and raped her and killed her husband, brother, and father. Prior to his death, the brother had hidden the last member of the family, his younger sister, "somewhere safe." The paper concludes by condemning the Evrémondes and all of their descendants, therefore adding Dr. Manette's condemnation to those of the Defarges. Darnay is consigned to the La Force Prison and is sentenced to be guillotined within twenty-four hours.Carton, while wandering the streets at night, stops at the Defarge wine shop, where he overhears Madame Defarge talking about her plans to have Darnay's entire family condemned. Carton discovers that she was the survivor of the ill-fated family mentioned in Dr. Manette's letter. He quickly informs Mr. Lorry and urges him and the others to leave France as soon as possible. On the day of his execution, Darnay is visited by Carton, who, because of his love for Lucie and friendship with Darnay, offers to trade places with him. As Darnay is unwilling, Carton drugs him and has him carried out to a waiting carriage. The spy, Barsad, tells Carton to remain true to their agreement. Darnay, Dr. Manette, Mr. Lorry, Lucie, and her child flee France. Darnay uses Carton's papers to cross the border and presumably escape to England.Miss Pross and Mr. Cruncher, who had not left with the others, prepare to depart. Meanwhile, Madame Defarge goes to the residence of Lucie and her family, believing that if she can catch them in the act of mourning for Darnay, that they could be held accountable for sympathizing with an enemy of the Republic. Miss Pross sends Mr. Cruncher out to fetch a carriage. While he is away, she is confronted by Madame Defarge. Knowing that if Madame Defarge realizes that her would-be victims have already departed, she might be able to have them stopped and brought back to Paris, Miss Pross pretends they are in another room by closing the door and placing herself in front of it. Madame Defarge figures out the fact that nobody is in the room and realizes they had already left. She fakes ignorance and orders Miss Pross to move away, but she refuses. Madame Defarge makes a break for the front door. They struggle and Madame Defarge is shot and killed by her own pistol; the noise of the shot permanently deafens Miss Pross. Miss Pross and Cruncher then quickly leave. The novel concludes with the death of Sydney Carton. If he had any chance to express his thoughts, they would be full of prophecy: Monsieur Defarge himself be sent to the guillotine, and a future child of Charles and Lucie Darnay named after Carton.。

Comment about A Tale of Two Cities“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way.”These words stem from A Tale of Two Cities that deeply impress upon me.The turbulent times rises to view and i sink into deliberation about French Revolution. It is universally known by us that the French Revolution is further engraved on human history. A Tale of Two Cities, one of the most representative works of Dickens, truly describes the cruel and decay of aristocracy. This novel profoundly exposes the society contradiction before the French Revolution ,intensely criticizes the tyrannical nobility and sincerely sympathizes with the depressed classes. The novel also describes many magnificent scenes like the revolt people attacked Bastille and so on,which displays people's great strength. Lost in the story,I feel like being together with the characters and experiencing the same exciting events.Dickens’sthought t hat blood can’t replace the love c ome to my mind.A Tale of Two Cities is based on the broad and real background of the French Revolution in 18 century.Dr.Manette was set free from the Bastille after 18 years and went to Landon with his daughter Lucie .They testified for a French young man Darnay in the court after 5 years.Luice and Darnay fell in love and they got married.Unfortunately, Darnay was arrested and sentenced to death because of his noble status during the French Revolution in 1789.Finally,Carton,who felt deeply attached to Luice all the time, took her husband Darnay’s place at the guillotine. For one thing ,Carton is the most glamorous and complex in the novel. He held a decadent attitude to life. When he was in school,he only substituted classmates for doing their homework.Even though he had rich talent ,he still chose to dumbly work.No one can feel his deep affection through his seeming indifference. He was soft and clinging in love with Lucie and even sacrified his life for her. What he did kept Lu cie’s happiness. This love is so cherish and valuable in any times. For another thing ,Madame Defarge signified slaughter. She lived for hatred because her families were killed by Carton’s uncle and father. The callous Madame Defarge made a chill run down myback.I have to marvel at the power of hatred.France turn into inferno by the flame of revenge at the end of 18 century. Some other figures of the novel are extolled by the author.Dr.Manette is upright ,lofty ,kindhearted and tolerant.Lucie represents love.Darnay is the person who point a way out for aristocracy. The virtues of these persons are appreciated by Dickens who is a humanist. The author ,Dickens,is the representative person of English realistic literature in 19 century. He excels in writing with humor and mental analysis. At meanwhile,he likes to combine the realistic description with romantic atmosphere. This novel reflects the promiscuity and savage of French noble ,misery of people and history of the French Revolution .It alludes to the social fact of England.I’m completely in favor of what Carton said before his death.”Resurrection in my life on me, believe me, though he were dead, also will be raised; Whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.”Dickens wanted to cure the worst of times b y that, but in vain. From my point of view, this immortal novel will lose its value and brilliance without the existence and actions of Carton. The death of Carton just like a feather softly drifting down to the surface ofwater,no algae bloom ,but ripples .It reminds us that the real equality and liberty can’t be founded by the guillotine. The lessons of A Tale of Two Cities should be kept in our mind forever. As the saying goes,“It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known.”The future will get better with the hope of creating a new century of equality ,liberty and indiscriminate love.。

A book report of a Tale of two Cities
By charles Dickens
A Tale of two Cities is written by the English writer Charles Dickens who was born in 1812 and died in 1870. Best known for his classic serialized novels, such as Oliver Twist, a Tale of two Cities, and Great Expectations, he wrote about the London he lived in, the conditions of the poor, and the growing tensions between the classes. He achieved international popular and critical success in his lifetime.
Based on his own personal experiences of working in a factory, a Tale of two Cities is one of his later works. The story was set in London and Paris at the time of the great French Revolution. It exposed the causes of revolution and its effects on people’s day-to-day lives. Moreover it mingled two different clues, love and cruelty.
Before the revolution, the King and the aristocracy treated their people cruelly. Manette, he had witnessed the crimes committed by
the Marquis Evremonde brothers.
However, things didn’t go on as what they had ever expected. One of the characters Darnay was immediately taken into custody, though he tried desperately to explain that unlike his uncle and father-the Evremonde brothers. Actually he was not a cruel man and knew nothing about his family. He was on the peasants’ side and want ed to help them. But without reason they disregarded his testimony.
Love was as pure as water, Carton had a deeply love towards Lucie, wife of Darnay that he devoted his life for her happiness. When Darnay
was sentenced to death, he used his physical resemblance to Darnay and his ability to manipulate the spy to pull off the ultimate sacrifice.
As a conclusion, with the broad real background of the French Revolution, Charles Dickens told us a story about cruelty, revenge and love.。
