We understand a port as a center of land-sea exchange, and as a major source of livelihood and a major force for cultural mixing. But do ports all produce a range of common urban characteristics which justify classifying port cities together under a single generic label? Do they have enough in common to warrant distinguishing them from other kinds of cities?A port must be distinguished from a harbor. They are two very different things. Most ports have poor harbors, and many fine harbor see few ships. Harbors is a physical concept, a shelter for ships; port is an economic concept, a center of land-sea exchange which requires good access to hinterland(内地) even more than a sea-linked foreland前陆(与内地相对而言). It is landward access, which is productive of goods for export and which demands imports, that is critical. Poor harbors can be improved with breakwaters(防浪堤), and dredging(挖泥)if there is a demand for port. Madras and Colombo are examples of harbors expensively improved by enlarging, dredging and building breakwaters.Port cities become industrial, financial and service centers and political capitals because of their water connections and the urban concentration which arises there and later draws to its railways, highways and air routes. Water transport means cheap access, the chief basis of all port cities. Many of the world’s biggest cities, for example, London, New York, Shanghai, Istanbul, Buenos Air es, Tokyo, Jakarta, Calcutta, Philadelphia and San Francisco began as ports ― that is, with land-sea exchange as their major function ― but they have since grown disproportionately in other respects so that their port functions are no longer dominant. They remain different kinds of places from non-port cities and their port functions account for that difference.Port functions, more than anything else, make a city cosmopolitan. A port city is open to the world. In it races, cultures, and ideas, as well as goods from a variety of places, mix and enrich each other and the life of the city. The smell of the sea and the harbor, the sound of the boat whistles or the moving tides are symbols of their multiple links with a wide world samples of which are present in microcosm(微观世界) within their own urban areas.Sea ports have been transformed by the advent of powered vessels, whose size and draught have increased. Many formerly important ports have become economically and physically less accessible as a result. By passed by most of their former enriching flow of exchange, they have become cultural and economic backwaters or have acquired the character of museums of the past.Much domestic port trade has not been recorded. What evidence we have suggests that domestic trade was greater at all periods than external trade. Shanghai, for example, did most of its trade with other Chinese ports and inland cities. Calcutta traded mainly with other parts of India and so on. Most of any city’s population is engaged in pro viding goods and services for the city itself. Trade outside the city is its basic function. But each basic worker requires food, housing, clothing and other services. Estimates of the ratio of basic workers to service ones range from 1:4 to 1:8.No city can be simply a port but must be involved in a variety of other activities. The port function of the city draws to it raw materials and distributes them in many other forms. Ports take advantage of the need for breaking up the bulk material where water and land transport meet and where loading and unloading costs can be minimized by refining raw materials or turning them into finished goods. The major examples here are oil refining and ore refining which are commonlySFLEP College English (New Edition) Achievement Test (Band 4) 3located at ports. It is not easy to draw a line around what is and is not a port function. All ports handle, unload, sort, alter, process, repack and reship most of what they receive. A city may still be regarded as a port city when it becomes involved in a range of functions not immediately involved with ships or docks.Cities which began as ports retain the chief commercial and administrative center of the city close to the waterfront. The center of New York is in lower Manhattan between two river mouths, the City of London is on the Thames, Shanghai along the Bund. This proximity to water is also true of Boston, Philadelphia, Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong, where the commercial, financial, and administrative centers are still grouped around their harbors even though each city has expanded into a metropolis. Even a casual visitor cannot mistake them as anything but port cities.1. A port is different from a harbor in that harbor is a physical concept, while port is an economicconcept.2.Madras and Colombo were originally poor harbors to be improved later on with breakwaters anddredging.3.Shanghai is as important a port city to China as New York to the United States.4.Many formerly important ports have been rendered economically and financially less accessiblesimply because more sea routes have been discovered.5.The majority of any city’s population deals with manufacturing and farming, while the majorityof the population in those ports are engaged in transportation.6.The port functions including separating the bulk material where water and land transport meetand then refining those raw materials to minimize the loading or unloading costs.7. A city may not still be regarded as a port city if it is engaged in a series of functions not closelyrelated to transportation, loading and unloading.1.〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕2.〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕3. 〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕4.〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕5.〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕6. 〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕7.〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕8.Many of the world famous ports have developed their industrial or commercial functions fasterthan their original functions so that their _____________________________.9.The port function of the city attracts ____________________________ and sends them out byother different modes of transportation.10.Cities like New York, London and Shanghai, which began as ports still maintain their positionsas the leading ____________________________ centers close to the waterfront.Part III Listening Comprehension (35 minutes)Section ADirections:In this section, you will hear 8 short conversations and 2 long conversations. I began studying this question and found the answers interesting. One morning I got into three different taxis and announced, “Well, it’s my first day back in New York in seven years. I’ve been prison.” Not a single driver replied, so I tried again. “Yeah, I shot a man in Reno.” I explained, hoping the driver would ask me why, but nobody asked. The only response came from a Ghan anian driver, “Reno? That is in Nevada?”Taxi drivers were uniformly(一致地) sympathetic when I said I’d just been fired. “This is America,” a Haitian driver said. “One door is closed. Another is open.” He argued against my plan to burn down my boss’s house: “If you do something silly and they put you away, you cannot look for another job.” A Pakistani driver even turned down a chance to profit from my loss of hope: He refused to take me to the middle of the George Washington Bridge, a $20 trip. “Why you want to go there? Go home and relax. Don’t worry. Take a new job.”One very hot weekday in July, while wearing a red skin mask and holding a stuffed(塞满的) pillowcase with the word “BANK” on it, I tried hailing(招呼) a taxi five times outside different banks. The driver picked me up every time. My ride with Guy Caaude Thevenain, a Haitian driver, was typical of the superb(一流的) assistance I received.“Is anyone following us?”“No,” said the driver, looking in his rearview mirror at traffic and me.“Let’s go across the park,” I said. “I just robbed the bank there. I got $ 25,000.”SFLEP College English (New Edition) Achievement Test (Band 4)9“$25,000?” he asked.“Yeah, you think it was wrong to take it?”“No, man. I wo rk 8 hours and I earn just $70. Pay me now.” Hi s reluctance may have something to do with money -- taxi drivers think the rate for waiting time is too low, but I think he wanted me to learn that even a bank robber can’t expect unconditional support.57. If we intend to have friends to dinner, we plan the menus, make a shopping list, and decide which food to cook first and such planning is an essential for any type of meal to be served.Likewise, if you want to find a job, take a sheet of paper, and write a brief account of yourself. In making a blueprint for a job, begin with yourself, for when you know exactly what you have to offer, you can intelligently plan where to sell your services. This account of yourself is actually a sketch of your working life and should include education, experience and references. Such an account is valuable. It can be referred to in filling out standard application blanks and is extremely helpful in personal interviews. While talking to you, your could-be employer is deciding whether your education, your experience, and other qualifications will pay him to employ you and your “ware” and abilities must be displayed in an orderly and reasonably connected manner. When you have carefully prepared a blueprint of your abilities and desires, you have something tangible to sell. Then you are ready to hunt for a job. Get all the possible information about your could-be job. Make inquiries as to the details regarding the job and the firm. Keep your eyes and ears open, and use your own judgment. Study shows that these conflicts make the excitement of campus life grow grey and have bad effects on both their living and learning.Roommate conflicts often spring from daily trivial things such as time when to turn off the light and space where to store luggage or personal belongings. When personalities don’t mix, the specifics can tear roommates apart and sometimes even lead to serious conflicts. Besides, the fact that roommates hold different attitudes towards certain issue is another factor causing these conflicts.Roommate conflicts are harmful and need to be settled. Though many people think that school discipline can soften the conflicts, I believe learning to be tolerant with each other can play a more constructive role because it teaches students flexibility and the art of compromise. Meanwhile, communication contributes to the solution to this problem since many of these conflicts stem from misunderstanding.Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)1. Y2. Y3. NG4. N5. Mother‘s (rather than father‘s) own educational achievements have long been thought to be the key to children‘s progress at school. But government-funded research suggests that mothers can compensate for their lack of exam success if they offer their under-fives activities linked to literacy and numeracy.Researchers from Oxford, Cardiff and London universities, who measured the attainments of65316426.doc 2more than 2,000 children at the ages of three and five, found that their mothers‘education is important in accounting for differences between children. But what the mother did with the child was even more important. Those who talked frequently to their children, who played games with numbers and letters, read to them, took them to the library and taught them songs and nursery rhymes had a significant effect on their attainment both at the ages of three and five. Professor Pam Sammons of London University‘s Institute of Education, said, ―Children‘s progress is not completely determined by social disadvantages. What parents do with children is critically important. Parents who have no educational qualifications can still do many things to help their children. We need to encourage parents, particularly younger ones, to play with children and to talk to them. Sammons said the findings emphasized the importance of policies for supporting families of under-threes, for example, the government‘s Sure Start program. MPs on the Select Committee for Education are investigating early years education. Ministers have provided a nursery, playgroup or school place for every four-year-old, but critics say that too many children are now in school reception classes, which are not equipped for them. There are more staff workers for each child in nurseries than in reception classes. The researchers, comparing children‘s achievements in math and literacy, found that playgroupsand private day nurseries tended to do much less well than nursery schools, which combined education, day care and reception classes. This research is consistent with previous studies that show the benefit of mother play in other areas such as in a child‘s creativity and social development using other devices such as music and toys. Music helps children connect the outer world of movement and sound with the inner world of feelings and observations. Children learn music the same way they learn language – by listening and imitating. Finger play promotes language development, motor skills and coordination, as well as self-esteem. Young children are proud when they sing a song and can do the accompanying finger movements. Listening to music also teaches important pre-reading skills. As youngsters use small drums or other percussion instruments (homemade or store-bought), they can play the rhythmic pattern of words.Babies become social beings through watching their parents, and through interacting with them and the rest of the family and later with others. It is a crucial time to begin teaching by example how people should behave toward one another. Toys that help babies with social development are stuffed animals, animal mobiles and dolls. Even very small babies can socialize with them. The infant will often converse with animal prancing on the crib bumpers or revolving on a mobile. Later, books and opportunities for make-believe and dress-up play also help children to develop social skills. In the beginning, babies‘ hand movements are totally random. But within a few months those tiny hands will move with more purpose and control. A mother has a particularly important role in the development of purposeful movement by giving her baby‘s hands plenty freedom; rather than keeping them swaddled or tucked under a blanket (except outdoor in cold weather). Researchers suggest providing a variety of objects that are easy for small hands to pick up and manipulate, and that don‘t require fine dexterity. And since young babies usually won‘t grasp objects that are directly in front of them, a mother should offer these objects from the side.Researchers suggest that mother give babies ample opportunity for ―hands-on‖ experience with the following:Rattles that fit small hands comfortably. Those with two handles or grasping surfaces allow a baby to pass them from hand to hand, an important skill, and those that baby can put their mouth on will help bring relief when teething begins. 65316426.doc 3They also suggest mothers use cradle gyms (they fit across a carriage, playpen or crib) that have a variety of parts for baby to grab hold of, spin, pull and poke. Beware of those, however, with strings more than six inches long, and take any gym down once your baby is able to sit up.Another useful play device is an activity board that requires a wide range of hand movements to operate, many of which your baby won‘t be able to intentionally maneuver for a while, but some of which even a young infant can set in motion accidentally with a swipe of a hand or foot. Besides the spinning, dialing, pushing, and pressing skills these toys encourage, they also teach the concept of cause and effect.1.Mothers, either well-educated or badly-educated, can help their young children succeedacademically.2.Young babies at all ages benefit from mothers who talk and play games with them.3.Even if a mother has no educational qualifications, she should play and talk with her child.4.There is no shortage of nurseries, playgroup or school places.5.Listening to music can teach children important pre-reading skills.6.Babies can move their tiny hands within a few months after they are born.7.If you give an object to a baby you‘d better not offer it from the side of the baby.1.〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕2.〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕3. 〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕4.〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕5.〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕6. 〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕7.〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕8. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D).You should decide on the best choic.Passage OneQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage. The human brain has two sides, and each side has different work to do.The left side of the brain controls language and number; it analyses and reasons. The right side65316426.doc 8controls our imagination; it controls our appreciation of music and our sense of rhythm. It is the right side of our brain which daydreams.Great artists and great scientists are similar. They both use the two sides of their brains. It is well-known that Albert Einstein (1879 –1955), as a great scientist, also enjoyed art, playing the violin and sailing. Einstein said his scientific discoveries grew from his imagination rather than from analysis, reason and language. He said that written and spoken words were not important in his thinking. The story goes that Einstein was daydreaming one summer‘s day while sitting on a hill. He imagined he was riding on sunbeams to the far distance of the universe. Then he found that he had returned to the sun. So he realized that the universe must curve. He got this idea by using his imagination. He then used the left side of brain to apply analysis, number and reason. And finally he used language to explain it.Traditional, established education in schools encourages us to use the left side of our brains. Language, number, analysis and reason are given more importance in our schools than imagination and daydreaming. However, we are encouraged to hop when we have two perfectly good legs! Then why don‘t we give more value to visual thinking? In fact, we all need both sides of our brains. We need to use our imaginations to think of solutions to problems and to enjoy emotional and artistic experiences. And we need to be logical and to be able to analyze and organize in order to survive day by day.57. According to the passage, the left side of the brain ________.A) controls language and numberB) controls our imaginationC) daydreamsD) controls our sense of rhythm58. What does the author want to show by using the example of Einstein?A) Great scientists are also great artists.B) The left side of Einstein‘s brain is very powerful.C) Einstein is a genius whose two sides of the brain are strong.D) The two sides of the brain are equally important.59. What do we learn about Einstein from the passage?A) He could play the violin well.B) He said his scientific discoveries are acquired by analysis rather than by daydreaming.C) He was the first person to discover the track of the sun.D) He was disgusted at language.60. What does the author mean by saying ―we are encouraged to hop when we have two perfectlygood legs‖ (Para. 4) ?A)We needn‘t hop because we are healthy.B)Only those who have something wrong in their legs can be encouraged to hop.C)It‘s foolish of us to hop when we have two perfectly good legs.D)We should use both sides of the brain.61. The author believes that the right side of our brain is as important as the left side because65316426.doc 9________.A) it controls our appreciation of music and sense of rhythmB) it enables us to make scientific discoveriesC) it is more important to analyze and organize in order to surviveD) the imaginations may provide solutions to problems and enable us to enjoy emotional andartistic experiencesPassage TwoQuestion 62 to 66 are based on the following passage.Elderly people respond best to a calm and unhurried environment. This is not always easy to provide as their behavior can sometimes be irritating. If they get excited or upset then they may become more difficult to look after. Although sometimes it can be extremely difficult, it is best to be patient and not to get upset yourself. You should always encourage old people to do as much as possible for themselves but be ready to lend a helping hand when necessary.Failing memory makes it difficult for the person to recall all the basic kinds of information we take for granted. The obvious way to help in this situation is to supply the information that is missing and help them make sense of what is going on. You must use every opportunity to provide information but remember to keep it simple and straightforward.―Good morning, Mum. This is Fiona, your daughter. It is eight o‘clock, so if you get up now, we can have breakfast downstairs.‖When the elderly person makes confused statements e.g. about going out to his or her old employment or visiting a dead relative, correct in a calm matter-of-fact fashion: ―You don‘t work in the office any more. You are retired now. Will you come and help me with the dishes?‖We rely heavily on the information provided by signposts, clocks, calendars and newspapers. These assist us to organize and direct our behavior. Confused old people need these aids all the time to compensate for their poor memory. Encourage them to use reminder boards or diaries for important coming events and label the contents of different cupboards and drawers. Many other aids such as information cards, old photos, scrap books, and addresses or shopping list could help in individual case.62. Why can‘t we always keep calm in front of old people?A)Because old people sometimes annoy us.B)Because old people sometimes don‘t understand us.C)Because we are sometimes in a bad mood.D)Because we are sometimes in a hurry.63. What happens to elderly people‘s memory according to the passage?A)Their memory becomes worse and recalls basic things as granted.B)Their memory becomes worse and can‘t remember basic things.C)They can‘t remember their failures.D)They can only remember past failures.64. Paragraph 3 gives an example illustrating ________.65316426.doc10A)how to provide simple, direct informationB) a daughter‘s care for her motherC) a daughter‘s duty to her motherD)the right procedure of helping the old65. In fact, the Internet is becoming a dominant element in modern life. The advantages of the Internet are very prominent. First, it can transmit information with surprising speed, and thus distances have been shortened. Second, with the Internet, life has become clearer. On-line chatting and various kinds of news give us access to knowledge from every corner of the world. Third, the Internet has completely changed people‘s mode of living. For example, on-line shopping, both convenient and cheap, is becoming more and more popular. However, the Internet has also brought some problems. First, its surprising speed can promote the spread of viruses as well. And virtual space has also provided opportunities for criminal activities. Third, many young people spend time on the Internet which should be devoted to homework.Overall, just as a coin has two sides, the Internet has both good and bad influences. This suggests that politicians who claim environmentalism is yesterday's issue may be seriously misjudging the public mood.A report from Mintel, the market research organization, says that despite recession and financial pressures, more people than ever want to buy environmentally frie ndly products and a “green wave” has swept through consumerism, taking in people previously untouched by environmental concerns. The recently published report also predicts that the process will repeat itself with “ethical” concerns, involving issues such as fair trade with the Third World and the social record of businesses. Companies will have to be more honest and open in response to this mood.Mintel‟s survey, based on nearly 1,000 consumers, found that the proportion who look for green products and are prepared to pay more for them has climbed from 53 per cent in 1990 to around 60 per cent in 1994. On average, they will pay 13 per cent more for such products, although this percentage is higher among women, managerial and professional groups and those aged 35 to 44.Between 1990 and 1994 the proportion of consumers claiming to be unaware of or unconcerned about green issues fell from 18 to 10 percent but the number of green spenders among older people and manual workers has risen substantially. Regions such as Scotland have also caught up with the south of England in their environmental concerns. According to Mintel, an image of green consumerism as associated in the past with the more eccentric members of society has virtually disappeared. The consumer research manager for Mintel, Angela Hughes, said it had become firmly established as a mainstream market. She explained that as far as the average person is concerned environmentalism has not …gone off the boil‟. In fact, it has spread across a much wider range of consumer groups, ages and occupations.Mintel‟s 1994 survey found that 13 per cent of consumers are “very dark green”, nearly always buying environmentally friendly products, 28 per cent are “dark green”, trying “as far as possible” to buy such prod ucts, and 21 per cent are “pale green” —tending to buy green products if they see them. Another 26 per cent are “armchair greens”; they said they care about environmental issues but their concern does not affect their spending habits. Only 10 per cent say they do not care about green issues.Four in ten people are “ethical spenders”, buying goods which do not, for example, involve dealings with oppressive regimes. This figure is the same as in 1990, although the number of' armchair ethical has risen from 28 to 35 per cent and only 22 per cent say they are unconcerned now, against 30 per cent in 1990. Hughes claims that in the twenty-first century, consumers will be encouraged to think more about the entire history of the products and services they buy, including the policies of the companies that provide them and that this will require a greater degree of honesty with consumers.Among green consumers, animal testing is the top issue—48 per cent said they would be deterred from buying a product if it had been tested on animals—followed by concerns regarding irresponsible selling, the ozone layer (臭氧层), river and sea pollution, forest destruction, recycling and factory farming. However, concern for specific issues is lower than in 1990, suggesting thatSFLEP College English (New Edition) Achievement Test (Band 4) 3many consumers feel that government and business have taken on the environmental agenda.1. Shopping is an attraction for many visitors, whether in the great department stores of New York and Tokyo or in the boutiques (流行小店)of Paris and London. The big cities also offer a unique atmosphere and history. The flower vendors and cable cars of San Francisco are part of the unusual atmosphere of that city. Therefore, tourism is an economic plus for many big cities because it increases income from existing 56 , both public and private.Section BDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) andD). You should decide on the best choice.Passage OneQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage. What might driving on an automated highway be like? The answer depends on what land of system is ultimately adopted. Two distinct types are on the drawing board. The first is a special purpose lane system, in which certain lanes are reserved for automated vehicles. The second is a mixed traffic system: fully automated vehicles would share the road with partially automated or manual driven cars. A special purpose lane system would require more extensive physical modifications to existing highways, but it promises the greatest gains in freeway capacity.Under either scheme, the driver would specify the desired destination, furnishing this information to a computer in the car at the beginning of the trip or perhaps just before reaching the automated highway. If a mixed traffic system way was in place, automated driving could begin whenever the driver was on suitably equipped roads. If special purpose lanes were available, the car could enter them and join existing traffic in two different ways. One method would use a special onramp. As the driver approached the point of entry for the highway, devices installed on8外教社®《大学英语》(全新版)4级学业测试the roadside would electronically check the vehicle to determine its destination and to ascertain that it had the proper automation equipment in good working order. Assuming it passed such tests, the driver would then be guided through a gate and toward an automated lane. In this case, the transition from manual to automated control would take place on the entrance ramp. An alternative technique could employ conventional lanes, which would be shared by automated and regular vehicles. The driver would steer onto the highway and move in normal fashion to a “transition”lane. The vehicle would then shift under computer control onto a lane reserved for automated traffic. (The limitation of these lanes to automated traffic would, presumably, be well respected, because all trespassers (非法进入者) could be swiftly identified by authorities.) Either approach to joining a lane of automated traffic would harmonize the movement of newly entering vehicles with those already traveling. Automatic control here should allow for smooth merging without the usual uncertainties and potential for accidents. And once a vehicle had settled into automated travel, the driver would be free to release the wheel, open the morning paper or just relax.57. We learn from the first paragraph that two systems of automated highways____.A) are being planned B) are being modifiedC) are now in wide use D) are under construction58. A special purpose lane system is probably advantageous in that ______.A) it would require only minor changes to existing highwaysB) it would achieve the greatest highway traffic efficiencyC) it has a lane for both automated and partially automated vehiclesD) it offers more lanes for automated vehicles59. Which of the following is TRUE about driving on an automated highway?A) Vehicles traveling on it are assigned different lanes according to their destinations.B) A car can join existing traffic any time in a mixed lane system.C) The driver should inform his car computer of his destination before driving onto it.D) The driver should share the automated lane with those of regular vehicles.60. We know from the passage that a car can enter a special purpose lane______.A) by smoothly merging with cars on the conventional laneB) by way of a ramp with electronic control devicesC) through a specially guarded gateD) after all trespassers are identified and removed61. When driving in an automated lane, the driver_______.A) should harmonize with newly entering carsB) doesn‟t have to rely on his computer systemC) should watch out for potential accidentsD) doesn‟t have to hold on to the steering wheelPassage TwoQuestions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage.SFLEP College English (New Edition) Achievement Test (Band 4)9The process of perceiving other people is rarely translated (to ourselves or others) into cold, objective terms. “She was 5 feet 8 inches tall, had had fair hair, and wore a colored skirt.” More often, we try to get inside the other person to pinpoint his or her attitudes, emotions, motivations, abilities, ideas and characters. Furthermore, we sometimes behave as if we can accomplish this difficult job very quickly—perhaps with a two-second glance. We try to obtain information about others in many ways. Berger suggests several methods for reducing uncertainties about others: watching, without being noticed, a person interacting with others, particularly with others who are known to you so you can compare the observed person‟s behavior with the known others‟ behavior, observing a person in a situation where social behavior is relatively unrestrained or where a wide variety of behavioral responses are called for, deliberately structuring the physical or social environment so as to observe the person‟s responses to specific stimuli; asking people who have had or have frequent contact with the person about him or her; and using various strategies in face-to-face interaction to uncover information about another person—questions, self-disclosures(自我表露), and so on. Getting to know someone is a never-ending task, largely because people are constantly changing and the methods we use to obtain information are often imprecise. You may have known someone for ten years and still know very little about him. If we accept the idea that we won‟t ever fully know another person, it enables us to deal more easily with those things that get in the way of accurate knowledge such as secrets and deceptions. It will also keep us from being too surprised or shocked by seemingly inconsistent behavior. Ironically, those things that keep us from knowing another person too well (e.g., secrets and deceptions) may be just as important to the development of a satisfying relationship as the things that enable us to obtain accurate knowledge about a person (e.g., disclosures and truthful statements).62.The word “pinpoint” (Line 3, Para. 1) basically means______.A) appreciate B) obtain C)interpret D) identify63. What do we learn from the first paragraph?A) People are better described in cold, objective terms.B) The difficulty of getting to know a person is usually underestimated.C) One should not judge people by their appearances.D) One is usually subjective when assessing other people‟s personality.64.It can be inferred from Berger‟s suggestions that ______.A) people do not reveal their true self on every occasionB) in most cases we should avoid contacting the observed person directlyC) the best way to know a person is by making comparisonsD) face-to-face interaction is the best strategy to uncover information about a person65. People have to waste more time on their way home or to work and even might be involved in an accident. With the development of industry and population expansion, this problem becomes more and more serious. One solution is to lay down more roads. The solution has many advantages. For example, it can efficiently decrease the number of buses and trucks in many main streets. But it will take up so much land that crowded cities become even more crowded. Another solution is to open more bus lines. If more bus lines should be opened up, the number of bicycles and cars in the main streets would be greatly decreased. But the disadvantage of this solution is that many people would not feel so convenient as they used to.In my opinion, the right solution to the problem is the combination of the two, that is, to lay down more roads in spacious areas and to open up more bus lines in downtown areas.Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)1.Y2. We need to encourage parents, particularly younger ones, to play with children and to talk to them.Sammons said the findings emphasized the importance of policies for supporting families of under-threes, for example, the government‘s Sure Start program. MPs on the Select Committee for Education are investigating early years education. Ministers have provided a nursery, playgroup or school place for every four-year-old, but critics say that too many children are now in school reception classes, which are not equipped for them. There are more staff workers for each child in nurseries than in reception classes. The researchers, comparing children‘s achievements in math and literacy, found that playgroups and private day nurseries tended to do much less well than nursery schools, which combined education, day care and reception classes. Those with two handles or grasping surfaces allow a baby to pass them from hand to hand, an important skill, and those that baby can put their mouth on will help bring relief when teething begins.65316426.doc 3They also suggest mothers use cradle gyms (they fit across a carriage, playpen or crib) that have a variety of parts for baby to grab hold of, spin, pull and poke. The results were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.Section BDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. Why are old people encouraged to use diaries?A)Because diaries can replace reminder boarders.B)Because diaries are the best way to record important events.C)Because diaries help make up for poor memory.D)Because diaries can label the contents of cupboards.66. What is the main idea of the passage?A)What happens to old people with failing memory.B)How to help old people with failing memory.C)Why old people have poor memory.D)How to improve bad memory.Part V Cloze (15 minutes)Directions:There are 20 blanks in the following passage. Used wisely, the Internet will contribute to a brilliant future for us.Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)1.Y2. NG3. Y4. N5. Y6. NG7. The Argentina side of 1986 was functional and hard-working but it was Maradona who fired them to the final and then set up two of the goals in their 3-2 win over West Germany in the final. In 1990, a barely-fit Maradona fought his way to the final where the Germans took their revenge. Few people shared Diego’s post-match tears. In fact many rejoiced that such an ugly brute of a team had lost.Eight years before, in Spain, Maradona, then newly arrived at Barcelona, disgraced himself by being sent off in a Second Phase game with Brazil. Even four years before that the 18-year-old Maradona was a source of great controversy when he was left Out of the victorious squad that won on home ground.USA 1994 was the end for Maradona as a player. Wool from sheep proved to be an effective “sponge” to soak up oil from the waters of the Persian Gulf after the Gulf War in 1991. The absorbent qualities of wool were used to good effect in wool poles which swept across the surface of the water and cleaned up the oil.(加)Now the same absorbent qualities are being used by railways in the Netherlands. Wool mats produced by Rhanex Wools of New Zealand have been laid between the rails at eight major Dutch railway stations to soak up diesel oil dropping from locomotives. Dutch authorities were worried that diesel oil was seeping (渗入) through the ground into the water-table, which is used for farm irrigation and to supply drinking water. The mats can be regularly squeezed to extract the diesel oil from them, and then reused.Similar wool mats are being used in inner city car parking lots in Sydney, Australia, to soak up oil dropping from parked cars. One parking lot owner believed that the value of his land could be reduced by oil pollution. The environmental friendly qualities of wool are also being put to good use to protect wool itself. High value Merino sheep in Australia and Canada are wearing wool covers to protect their fleece (羊毛).65316475.doc 426. Which of the following is not one of wool’s advan tages?A. The family has bee n the focus of the individual’s loyalty and affection, of his economic interest, and even of his legal duty. Many an older Frenchman has spent his youth in a world where he was expected to regard cousins, uncles and grandparents as more important to him than friends of his own age, and where the family’s needs and de mands were put before those of the local community or even of the State. The main change since the war is that the focus of loyalty has been steadily narrowing from the “extended family”to the “nuclear family”, i.e. the home cell of parents and children. In the rural areas the traditionally big peasant families have been losing their influence as the young drift away to the town. As property gives way to income and family management disappears, the tight network of the big family gath ering has become less necessary for the individual’s future, and also less easy to maintain. Many younger couples today prefer pleasure travelling, or a weekend cottage shared with a few friends, to the traditional big family reunions on Sundays and in August. But old values are still there. Clan (氏族) loyalties towards more distant relatives may become weak, an adult’s ties with his own parents and even with their parents often remain remarkably strong. And if many younger people are today trying to lead more emotionally independent lives, it is often not without a sense of guilt, or an awareness of the pain it causes to their parents. This may be so in any country: it is especially sharp in France.31. In France, people used to _________.A. value more their families than the countryB. attach most importance to their friendsC. regard their cousins and uncles more important than their parentsD. consider the local community prior to the state32. The “nuclear family” will not include _________.A. fatherB. motherC. childrenD. grandparents33. The rural families are growing smaller because _________.65316475.doc 5A. many young men and women were killed in the warB. more and more people choose to stay singleC. more and more families have only one childD. many young men and women are leaving the country for cities34. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. The French have given up their clan loyalties to independence.B. Family gathering has become less necessary nowadays.C. Many younger couples spend weekends and holidays themselves or with a few friends.D. The old values still have their influence today.35. What does “this” in the last sentence of the passage refer to ?A.Loyalty to the family.B. Emotionally independence.C. Sense of guilt.D. Difference between old values and new values.Passage FourWhen it comes to walking off those excesses, a lengthy hike once a day will do you far more good than nipping down to (一溜烟跑) the shops every couple of hours — even if the short walks add up to the same amount of time, say exercise researchers in Britain. But walks of any length beat sitting at home with your feet up and watching television, they stress. Some researchers in Britain reached these conclusions after putting 56 couch potatoes through an 18-week course of daily walks. They found that longer walks produce the most beneficial changes to the composition of blood fats, but walks of any length improve the fitness of the heart. In the study, the normally inactive subjects were divided into three roughly equal groups. The “long walkers” took a hike of between 20 and 40 minutes every day. “Intermediate walkers” had two rounds of jogging of 10 to 15 minutes, and “short walkers” did three stints of 90 to 110 minutes. The controls sat at home, as usual. At the start and end of the 18 weeks, the health and fitness of each group were measured and it was found that the long walkers were healthiest, as measured by altered fat profiles in their blood. At the end, each litre of blood from the long walkers contained an average 0. 05 grains less apolipoprotein (阿朴脂蛋白) II, a “bad” fat that is linked with heart disease. This was more than twice the drop seen in the intermediate walkers, and five times that in short walkers. In the controls, the level of this fat stayed the same. The drop in apolipoprotein II in the long walkers was matched by a rise in the blood level of apolipoprotein I, a “good” fat that is associated with smooth arteries.36. According to the researchers, _________ is least beneficial to your health.A. taking a lengthy hike once a dayB. going shopping several times every dayC. doing jogging every morningD. sitting in the sofa watching TV every evening37. “Couch potato” is used to refer to a kind of _________.A. farmersB. vegetablesC. movie-goersD. They arrived in China in 1275 and stayed until 1292 when they left the country as escorts for a Mongol princess traveling by sea to Persia. In 1298 when Venice was at war, Marco Polo wa taken prisoner. During his imprisonment, he dictated to a fellow prisoner the detailed accounts of his travels. His literary work, The Travels of Marco Polo, is perhaps the most famous and influenctial travel book in history. With a wealth of vivid details, it gave medieval Europe its first consequential knowledge of China and other countries. For a long time it was the only existing source in Europe for information on the geography and life in the Far East. The bok became the basis for some of the first accurate maps of Asia made in Europe.1-5 CBCCA 6-10 BCDBA11-15 CDAAB 16-20 CDDAA21-25 BCACC 26-30 CACBBModel Test 2Universal Language on the InternetIn general, the universal language on the Internet is English, or more exactly a vague collection of languages called “English”because their common origin is the n ational language spoken in England by the English. That national language has spread over the world, and several variants such as American English, Australian English, exist. A great number of peoplewhose native language is none of the variants know English as a foreign language. They typically use a more or less simplified variant, e.g. excluding most of the idioms of British, American, and Australian English. Of course, they make mistakes, and sometimes the "English" used by people as a foreign language on the Internet is almost incomprehensible to anyone else. In addition, people who use English as their native language do not know how to spell difficult words, since they basically know English as a spoken language. Thus, roughly speaking, the universal language of the Internet is clumsy, coarse and misspelled "English".1-5 DCDBA 6-10 CDDCA11-15 BCDBD 16-20 ACCBA21-25 ACDCB 26-30 CDADCModel Test 3HoneyHoney, the wonderfully rich golden liquid, is the miraculous product of honey bees. The fascinating process of making honey begins when the bees feast on flowers. Although it is available throughout the year, it is an exceptional treat in the summer and fall when it has just been harvested and is at its freshest. For many centuries, honey was regarded as sacred due to its wonderfully sweet properties as well as its rarity. It was used mainly in religious ceremonies topay tribute to the gods. Honey was also used for a variety of medicinal and cosmetic purposes. In the time of the ancient Olympics, athletes were reported to eat honey to enhance their sports performance. Proud of their new American heritage, they wanted to celebrate the American holiday with the type of festival they loved in Europe. They dressed up as clowns, cowboys and knights ad marched throug the street. With an audience of over a quarter of a million people, the parade was a hit! With nationwide television, the parade assumed its hold on the entire nation in the 1950’s. The parade has always been known for its policy of going on rain or shine. Even in 1962, less than a week after President Kennedy’s assassination, it went on so as not to disappoint the millions of children. The Macy’s Thankgiving Day Parade is a true New York experience that is magical for both children and adults.1-5 DCDBC 6-10 BBCBA11-15 DDCBA 16-20 CDCDC21-25 BDBCA 26-30 CCDDBModel Test 5LonelinessMost people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually only lasts between a few minutes and a few hours. This kind of loneliness is not serious. For some people, loneliness can last for years. Recently, researchers say there are three different types ofloneliness. The first kind is temporary. It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention. The second is called situational loneliness. It’s a natural result of a particular situation, such as a family problem, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new place. Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, it does not last for more than a year. The third kind of loneliness is the most severe. Chronic loneliness usually lasts more than two years and has no specific reasons. People who experience habitual loneliness have problems socializing and keeping close to others. Unfortunately, many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their conditions.1-5 BADDB 6-10 AACAC11-15 DBCDA 16-20 CBCDB21-25 BCBDA 26-30 ADCDB。

Sometimes, too, because rank has been important in certain societies for a long time, people have been trained never to question those in authority. In other countries, including America, children are trained to question and search for answers. When a child asks a question, he will often be told to go to the library and find the answer for himself. By the time students reach the age of 14 or 15, they may be developing exciting new ideas in all fields of science and arts .To encourage such creativity, there are many national prizes offered to students every year for their scientific discoveries and artistic accomplishments. This interest in questioning and searching may be considered by some people as bad for young people's manners. This impression may be created when visitors notice young Americans asking questions and arguing with older people .1-5 CABDB 6-10 DCBDC11-15 DACBC 16-20 DCADC21-25 CBDBA 26-30 CDBACModel Test 7Driving in the USWhen driving in the United States, it’s a good idea to have an internaitonal driver’s license if you don’t have a state license. Each of the 50 states has its own traffic laws. For example, in some states drivers can pump their own gas at “self-service islands”, while in others this is not allowed. Drivers are expected to know and understand the laws even if they don’t live in the state. Get information when you cross the border into a state at a tourist information center. There is a national speed limit of 55 miles per hour, or about 80 kilometers per hour. Americans usually start and stop slowly and are generally polite about letting cars enter busy streets. They usually stop for people who are walking and let them cross the street first. In many states, you may turn right after stopping at a corner, even if there a red light.1-5 DBABB 6-10 CCBBD11-15 CBACD 16-20 BAACD21-25 BABBD 26-30 CDADBModel Test 8Why Do People Smoke? Why do people smoke? One reason is that people become addicted to cigarettes. The addictive substance in cigarettes is nicotine. When people smoke, the nicotine goes right into the blood stream and makes people feel relaxed. A smoker's body gets accustomed to the nicotine and if he stops smoking he feels nervous. Many smokers try to stop smoking, but because of the addiction to nicotine they feel so uncomfortable that they often find it too difficult to stop.Another reason is that people simply enjoy smoking and what it symbolizes. Having a cigarette for many people means taking a break. For some people smoking becomes part of certain social rituals, for example, the cigarette after dinner. Many people enjoy smoking because it gives them something to do with theirhands. Reaching for a cigarette, lighting it, flicking the ashes are especially comforting in situations where a person feels tense.1-5 DCBAA 6-10 BDCDB11-15 CCABC 16-20 CADBA21-25 CBDBC 26-30 ACCABModel Test 9FriendsFriends play a very important part in everyone’s life. Friendship usually develops during childhood. New friends are made when you progress through school. Those friends that you make as a student can usually last long. Friends influence your development, maturity and sense of responsibility. A familiar expression is "You can tell a lot about a person by knowing who his friends are." Friendship is based on common interests. If you like sports, most of your friends are likely to be athletic. If you enjoy reading and shopping, most of your friends do the same. Some people call you their friends for the wrong reasons. These people are not real friends. They are superficial, only “friends” on the outside, not the inside where it counts. Superficial friends only want to be your friends if it is to their advantage. True friends are there whether you are rich or poor.1-5 ACDAD 6-10 DBAAB11-15 BAADB 16-20 DAAAD21-25 ABDDA 26-30 DDACAModel Test 10Birth, Marriage and DeathBirth, marriage and death: these are the greatest events in human life. Many things, good or bad can happen to us in our lives. Yet there are days which are usually marked by some kinds of special ceremony: the day we are born, the day we get married and the day we die. We have a choice in the second of these. But we have no choice in birth and death. All human beings are affected by these three events. The only thing that differs in each society is the way these events are celebrated, but all societies share common characteristics. Birth is a time of joy. The proud parentsreceive congratulations and presents on behalf of the newborn. Marriage is also a time of joy. Death is a time of sorrow and is marked by a special ceremony and mourning. The dates of all three events are usually remembered.1-5 BAADB 6-10 CDCBD11-15 DCBDA 16-20 BCCAD21-25 BCBDC 26-30 DADABModel Test 11HotelsHotels today are quite different from those of the past. People who stay in them are generally travelling for business, or they are touring or on vacation. So hotels are designed mainly to meet the needs of one of those two groups of people. Hotels designed for business people are known as commercial or transient hotels. Hotels for people on vacation are called vacation or resort hotels. Transient hotels are usually located in the business section of town, while resort hotels may be at the seashore, on a mountain lake, or in the desert. In addition to these two main types, there is a third type of hotel, called a residential hotel. This is designed to meet the needs of people who want to live in a hotel. Inns and hotels are located in nearly very population center in the world. Along with advanced equipment, there are qualified doctors and nurses, who are eager to offer the best service, thoug it will cost some money. Who knows whether doctors will not work wonders at a critical moment? At least they can reduce the patient’s pain. However, in most cases, no miracle emerges. Otherwise, he is not a dying person at all. That being the case, some people prefer that the sick person should stay at home with his folks, who love and care about him.
