While some people have tried going cold turkey(快速戒掉坏习惯) or even punishing themselves for their mobile phones, an app is made available in the UK that rewards people for staying away from their devices. The app, called Hold, was created by Norwegians Maths Mathisen, Florian Winder, and Vinoth Vinaya while they are studying at Copenhagen's Business school, to help break fellow students' attachments to their devices. The three college students found that positive reinforcement(强化)was the best way of beating smartphone addiction. Hold allows students to collect points for staying off their devices between the hours of 7 am and 11 pm; they get 10 points for every 20 minutes.Through partnerships with universities and businesses, points can be used for discounts on everything fromcinema tickets to Amazon goods to cafe food and drink. A half price cinema ticket, for example, costs 60 points, or 2 hours away from a phone. And a£5($ 6.88)Amazon voucher (代金券) needs 1,000 points, or 33 hours off your smartphone.Students can also use their points to buy school books and stationery(文具), which are then donated to schools partnered with children's charity Unicef.Over 120, 000 people use the app in Scandinavia, including 40 percent of higher education students in Norway, where Hold first came onto market in February 2016. It's now available to students from over 170 universities in the UK.A 2017 University of Texas study claimed that merely placing a smartphone in someone's line of sight slowed down their productivity, response time, and reduced their grades. An earlier study from the London School of Economics found students who didn't use smartphones on school grounds saw their test scores increase 6. 4 percent.24. The app Hold was created mainly to .A. promote online sales of goodsB. earn discounts on goods or servicesC. find new uses of mobile phonesD. help students put down their smartphones25. How long should a student stay off the mobile phone to get 300 points?A. 6 hours.B. 10 hours.C. 15 hours.D. 30 hours.26. What is the main purpose of the text?A. To tell the story of Hold creationB. A computer textbookC. A science magazineD. An official documentCThe dancer put a cardigan sweater over her leotard. Then she sat down to eat a sandwich. Cardigan, leotard, sandwich-where did these words come from? Did you know that each of them was a person's name? Words that come from proper names are called eponyms(名祖名词), and there are many eponyms in English. The sandwich, for example, was named for John Montagu, the Earl(伯爵)of Sandwich. He lived from 1718-1792. He loved to play cards and did not want to stop a game even to eat. By putting cold meat between two pieces of bread, he could eat while he played. The cardigan sweater was named for an officer in the British army. In the 1800s, James Thomas Brudenell, the Earl of Cardigan, spent his own money to buy special knitted(针织的)jackets for the men in his army. Knitted jackets with buttons soon came to be called cardigans.Jules Leotard was a French circus performer. In 1859, at the age of twenty-one, Leotard performed the first mid-air somersault(空翻). He became known as the "daring young man on the flying trapeze(吊杠)". Leotard invented a close-fitting one-piece suit to wear when he performed. Dancers still call their close-fitting garments leotards.Another person who gave her name to a style of clothing was Amelia Bloomer. Bloomer was the editor of a magazine called The Lily. American women in her day were expected to wear heavy skirts that dragged on the floor. In 1851, a young woman named Elizabeth Smith Miller introduced a new kind of clothing that was much easier to move around in. She wore a dress that came only to the knees. Under it she wore loose pants that fitted close at the ankles. Amelia Bloomer published a picture of the outfit(全套服装)in the Lily. She hoped women would adopt the new style. In news stories, reporters called the pants "bloomers". A hundred years later, people were still using the word. There are many other words that come from people's names. The diesel engine was named for its inventor, Rudolf Diesel. The word boycott comes from the name of an English landlord named Charles Boycott. Where each word came from is a story in itself. Who knows, maybe your name will become a word someday.28. Why did the Earl of Sandwich invent the "sandwich"?A. He found it boring to play cards.B. He preferred to eat meat and bread.C. He wanted to create a new kind of food.D. He could eat while playing cards without stopping the game.29. According to the text, what do "bloomers" refer to?A. Loose dressesB. Ways to remember words.B. Words that come from people's names.C. The history of garments development.D. The unknown stories behind English words.DA team of researchers led by engineers from Penn State University has created the first material that heals itself in the presence of water, according to a study published in Scientific Reports. The material, inspired by squid(鱿鱼)teeth, could be used to repair instruments in water-filled environments that are difficult to access, such as the human body, or the bottom of the sea.The researchers had been studying squids' ring teeth, which are uniquely strong and can change state from liquid to solid in the presence of water. After testing ring teeth samples from several species of squid found all over the world, the researchers uncovered the genetic code for the proteins (蛋白质) that allow the teeth to heal themselves when broken. They then changed the genetic structure of bacteria to produce the proteins so they could conduct more tests. The researchers then made the proteins into a rubbery plastic by mixing them with a solvent(溶剂)and letting the solvent change into a gas. The resulting material combines a soft, shapeless part of the protein that gives the plastic its self-healing characteristics and a more structured sheet of amino acids(氨基酸)that give it a solid structure. To test the material's strength, the researchers cut it, and then put the two pieces back together with a drop of water. They found that the material healed best at 113 degrees Fahrenheit, a little warmer than the temperature of the human body, and with slight pressure from a metal tool. The material was just as strong, and able to hold the same amount of weight, before and after it was cut.Material that heals itself in the presence of water could expand the usability of biomedical implants(移植). Of course, this material is nowhere near ready for that application, and the researchers didn't test whether the constant presence of water degrades(降低)the plastic's ability to heal itself. The researchers next plan to study how their technology could help heal wounds.32. According to paragraph 3, the rubbery plastic become self-healing in combination with .A. amino acidsB. another kind of rubberC. a mixture of gasesD. some protein33. In paragraph 4, the researchers carried out a test to check whether the material .A. was fit for human bodyB. would melt at high temperaturesC. could be connected with the metalD. would recover its original strength after healing itself34. What is the author's attitude towards the self-healing material?A. Positive.B. Objective.C. Doubtful.D. Critical.35. What is the main idea of the text?A. A kind of self-healing teeth was made from squids' ring teeth.B. The genetic code of squids' special teeth has been uncovered.C. Super-strong material inspired by squid teeth is self-healing.D. A special rubbery plastic is used to replace squids' teeth.

With his speed and power, he has conquered (征服)lots of other great boxers of the 21st century. In between fights, he keeps his training and strengthens it when another fight approaches.Just like a boxer, we too, come face to face with many competitors in the arena(竞技场)oflife―problems and difficulties. The bad news is that we don't really know when they occur. Here are several reasons why you should train yourself for success like a champion boxer! You don't practice in the arena ; that's where your skills and your abilities are evaluated. This also means that you don't practice solving problems and developing yourself when problems occur; you prepare yourself to face them long before you actually face them.Talent is good but training is even better. Back in college, one of my classmates in Political Science didn't bring any textbook or notebook in our classes ; he just listened and participated in discussions. What I didn't understand was how he became a top student! Obviously, he was gifted with a great memory and analytical skills. In short, he was talented. If you are talented, you maybe need less preparation and training time in facing life's challenges. But even for people who are talented, training and learning are important. Avoid the lazy person's maxim (格言):“If it isn't broken, why fix it?” Why wait for your roof to leak in the rainy season when you can fix it right away?Training enables you to gain intuition (直觉)and reflexes (反应力).Without training, you will mess up. Without training, you won't be able to anticipate how your enemy will hit you. You will lose control of your race car after the first lap. With training, you lower the possibility of these accidents.Keep in mind that training is borne out of self-command and strong will. Even if you meet with some setbacks in your training, if you keep at it and persevere, you will soon see results in your life and when problems come, you will be like the champion boxer who stands tall and fights until the final round is over and you're proclaimed as the champion!24. Perseverance in training is very important.CAs with many etymologies(词源),the exact root of this word is difficult to say with one hundred percent certainty. However, the leading theory is extremely believable and backed up by a fair bit of documented evidence. Specifically, it is thought that a dollar is called a “buck" thanks to deer. One of the earliest references of this was in 1748, about 44 years before the first US dollar was created, where there is a reference to the exchange rate for a cast (桶)of alcoholic drink traded to Native Americans being "5 bucks” , referring to deerskins. In yet another documented reference from 1748, Conrad Weiser, while traveling through present day Ohio, noted in his journal that someone had been “robbed of the value of 300 Bucks".At this time, a buck skin was a common medium of exchange. There is also evidence that a "buck" didn't simply mean one deerskin, but may have meant multiple skins, depending on quality. For instance, skins from deer killed in the winter were considered superior to those killed in the summer, due to the fur being thicker. It is thought that the highest quality skins generally had a one to one value with one skin equaling one buck. In contrast, for lower quality skins, it might take several of them to be valued at a single buck. The specific value for given sets of skins was then set at trading. In addition, when the skin was from another animal, the number of skins required to equal a buck varied based on the animal and the quality of the skins. For instance, there is one documented trade where twelve high-quality rabbit skins equaled one buck. This use of skins as a medium of exchange gradually died off over the next century as more and more Europeans moved in and built towns and cities. Once the US dollar was officially introduced after the passing of the Coinage Act of 1792 , it quickly became the leading item used as a medium of exchange, but the term "buck" stuck around and by the mid-nineteenth century was being used as an informal term for the dollar.28. What can be inferred from the text?A. The first dollar was made from a deerskin.B. A skin from any animal was valued at a buck.C. The quality of a deerskin varied with the change of seasons.D. Deerskins were the only medium for trading in 1970s.29. When did the use of skins as a common medium of exchange die off?A. As more and more Europeans settled in America.B. When the Coinage Act of 1792 was passed.C. When the bucks died out in the 1950s.,D. As the US dollar was officially introduced.30. How does the author mainly develop this text? ”A. Why a dollar is called a buck.C. What a dollar was worth in the past.D. How the word dollar came into being.DA new device works like a solar panel, except it doesn't harvest energy from the sun. It captures energy from the cold night sky.A prototype (雏形)of the device produced enough electricity at night to power a small light bulb. A bigger version might one day light rooms or charge phones. It could also power electronics in remote or low-resource areas that lack electricity. The device makes use of the temperature difference between the earth and outer space to create electricity. As long as one side of it is cooler than the other, the generator can produce electricity. The cooler side faces the sky and is attached to an aluminum plate. That plate is sealed beneath a transparent cover and surrounded with insulation (隔热材料)to keep out heat. The bottom of the generator is attached to an exposed aluminum (铝)plate. That plate is warmed by the local air. At night, the top plate can get a couple of degrees Celsius cooler than the bottom of the generator.Researchers tested a 20-centimeter prototype one clear December night in Stanford University, California. The generator produced up to 25 milliwatts of power per square meter of the device. That was enough power to light a small light emitting diode (发光二极管),or a LED bulb. Further improvements might increase its production to at least 500 milliwatts per square meter. The system might need more insulation around the cool, top plate to do that.“The device could also help power remote weather stations or other environmental de vices, " says Aaswath Raman. He is a material scientist who works on the device at the University of California, Los Angeles. " This may be useful in polar regions where people can't see sunlight for months, “ Raman says. "If you have some low-power devices and you need to power them through three months of darkness, this might be a way. ”32. What does the author mainly talk about in Paragraph 3 ?A. Application fields of the device.B. The developing process of the device.C The working principle of the device.D Significant effects of the device.33 How can researchers make the device produce more electricity? A. By putting more insulation around thetop plate.B. By using it in extremely cold and clear nights.C. By attaching the bottom plate to a warm plate.D. By covering the top plate with a transparent lid.34.What's Raman's attitude to the new device?A. Doubtful.B. Hopeful.C. Negative.D. Ambiguous.35 . What could be a suitable title for the text?A. A Device Using the Cold Night Sky to Produce ElectricityB. A Device Bringing New Hope for Those in the Cold NightC. The Differences Between a Solar Panel and a New DeviceD.
