We have been volunteering at the shelter ever since. I was recently feeling the push to serve more, so I scheduled a Saturday visit. My daughter had social invitations, but she also felt the push to visit the shelter, so she planned to go there with her friends and me, later in the day instead. We piled up old blankets, sheets and pillows to take along and donate. On arriving and touring, we met 500 dogs and 200 cats being cared for at this shelter. After the tour we served meals to the puppies in the sick or injured puppy room. We held and comforted those who would clearly survive their injuries and several who were so sick that the volunteer vet on hand said they had a 50% chance of being alive next week. Then we fed two sick and abandoned young kittens. While feeding the animals I watched the workers who were cleaning out some of the dog houses with healthy dogs who would be returned to the streets. I was touched most by how often they stopped in their duty to pet and play with these dogs. They did it with such love. While some workers and volunteers were paid, others were paid nothing to support these animals. My daughter and I stayed for 4﹣5 hours, beyond the time she had scheduled to meet friends for lunch. She chose to cancel her social date and spend more time with these animals despite the tough conditions. A survey of university backgrounds of heads of major global companies found that Harvard in the United States was the most likely place to have studied in.The Times Higher Education magazine ranked the universities attended by chief executive officers (CEO) of Fortune Global 500 companies. There are four US universities in thetop 10, with three from France, two from Japan and one from South Korea. The highest ranked UK university is Oxford in 21st place. This league table, described as the Alma Mater Index, shows which universities aroundthe world taught the bosses of some of the world’s biggest companies. One in 20 had a degree from a single institution, Harvard. This included Margaret C. Whitman of Hewlett﹣Packard, Jeffrey R. Immelt of General Electric and Vittorio Colao of Vodafone. But the top 10 for producing business leaders does not contain all the usual names that appear at the top of university rankings. Oxford and Cambridge are absent, but the University of Pennsylvania in the US and Keio University in Japan are included, along with three French universities, headed by the Ecole Polytechnique.Across the top 100, universities from the US ________, followed by universities in China, Japan, France and Germany. There are more Ceos who went to university in Asia than in Europe. In terms of national comparisons, UK universities produced the sixth highest number of global chief executives, with Oxford in 21st place and Cambridge in 45th place. But even though Harvard might have taught the biggest number of bosses from the top500 companies, it was not attended by any of the heads of the biggest 10 companies, who were from a more diverse range of universities.Royal Dutch Shell is headed by a graduate of Zurich University of AppliedSciences; Walmart is headed by a student of Georgia Tech and Exxon Mobil has a chief executive from the University of Texas, Austin. Could your weekend lie﹣in(睡懒觉) kill you? " asked the Daily mail. It is said in a study that sleeping more at weekends can increase the risk of heart disease. Since most of us change our sleep schedule depending on whether it’s a work or non﹣work day, it’s an interesting question. Is the lie﹣in really so dangerous? Researchers say that changing sleep patterns causes social jet lag. Is that even a thing?Changing our sleeping hours causes the effect of crossing a time zone﹣it makes us sleepy during the day. People who changed their sleep patterns were also more likely to gain weight during the study and more suited to going to bed and waking late because of the change of their biological clock. They were more at risk of these changes than earlier sleepers and risers. The study also shows an association between switching sleep patterns and changes in some blood results. It does not show that anyone’s developing heart disease was because they had lie﹣ins.Jim Horne, one of the professors of the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University, says the concept of social jet lag is likely to feed our anxiety about sleep, so we should really stop worrying so much and have a limited weekend lie﹣in. Worry is bad for sleep and we naturally compensate for not getting enough rest in the week by lying﹣in at weekends, so we shouldn’t stop ________. However, we should limit the time.Studies show that if you accumulate a five﹣hour sleep debt during the week, then you only need one and a half hours of extra sleep on your days off to make up for it. It wouldbe a shame to be scared of a lie﹣in. Studies of sleep and risk factors for heart disease can struggle to tell between poor sleep causing stress and stress disrupting sleep. Work stress can cause both a rise in blood pressure and changes in sleep patterns. Sleep is the test for the state of one’s health, and the most important thing that happens when you don’t get enough of it is that you feel sleepy.(1)What’s the probable effect of changing our sleep patterns?________A.Becoming unhealthy.B.Losing weight quickly.C.Easily adapting to time zones.D.Becoming early sleepers and risers.(2)What is Jim Horne’s attitude towards the weekend lie﹣in?________A.Negative.B.Doubtful.C.Unconcerned.D.Supportive.(3)What does the underlined phrase “doing it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?________A.Lying﹣in.B.Worrying.C.Sleeping early.pensating for the limit.(4)What can we infer from the text?________A.The sleep debt must be paid off completely.B.The weekend lie﹣in is a bad habit for all people.C.The more hours one sleeps, the healthier he will be.D.Poor sleep may result from and cause stress in turn.【答案】ADAD【考点】阅读理解综合【解析】本文属于说明文阅读,作者通过这篇文章主要向我们描述了一项研究表明,周末多睡会增加患心脏病的风险.【解答】(1)A.细节理解题.根据文章People who changed their sleep patterns were also more likely to gain weight during the study and more suited to going to bed and waking late because of the change of their biological clock可知改变我们的睡眠模式可能变得不健康;故选A.(2)D.态度判断题.根据文章Jim Horne, one of the professors of the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University, says the concept of social jet lag is likely to feed our anxiety about sleep, so we should really stop worrying so much and have a limited weekend lie﹣in可知吉姆•霍恩对周末卧床的态度是支持的;故选D.(3)A.词义猜测题.根据文章Worry is bad for sleep and we naturally compensate for not getting enough rest in the week by lying﹣in at weekends,so we shouldn’t stop doingit可知担心对睡眠有害,我们自然会通过周末躺在床上来弥补一周没有得到足够的休息,所以我们不应该停止这样做;意为多睡;故选A.(4)D.推理判断题.根据文章Studies of sleep and risk factors for heart disease can struggle to tell between poor sleep causing stress and stress disrupting sleep可知从课文中可以推断出睡眠不足可能是由压力引起的;故选D.第二节(满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.Over the course of my life, I come to realize we will have unpleasant feelings from time to time. Buffalo is far more wintry, whereas Seattle’s winters are more bitter. Our winters tend to be brilliantly sunny and cheerful. But,of course, it’s different for a visitor.Lightweight thermal (保暖的) wear is good. Back in the day,we wore layers and layers of heavy woolens. A boy of 13 carrying 35 pounds of wet wool on his back does not feelvery cold. Today you can buy outfits filled with goose feathers as well as thermal boots and caps to keep you warm. When I was a youth, there was no such phrase as global warming. We never got warm, not even at night, when we slept under piles of blankets because Dad believed that if you couldn’t see your breath when you talked, then the thermostat was turned up too high and you were wasting fuel. So 45 degrees was room temperature, and we wore long woolens to bed.We arose in the cold, dark dawn, and walked forth into the snowstorm to catch the school bus. We huddled(蜷缩) by the highway, praying for the bus to come, while wolves moved around eyeballing us for signs of sleepiness. When you have survived wolves, then the winters of today are a walk in the park.Enduring winter is only a start —embracing(拥抱)winter is what you should struggle for. Winter gives a sense of purpose and saves one from a life of self-gratification(自我满足),lying down and posting photos on Facebook. You have promises to keep. A sidewalk to clear. Two inches of snow over a layer of ice — you may as well set a leg trap for the elderly as leaving the walk unswept. You have children to raise. Remove their fingers from their smart phones, and lead them outdoors so they can absorb the wisdom of winter. We are animals. Life is not mainly about self-expression. It is about finding food and clothing and shelter, about sticking with the pack and not wandering off. Everyoneis just as cold as you. No complaining.24. What are Minnesota's winters like in the author's eyes?A. They are wonderful.B. They are unbearable.C. They are colder than Buffalo’ s.D. They are comfortable for visitors.25. When the author was young, ________.A. he kept talking to keep warmB. he suffered from winters’ nightsC. his dad tried his best to warm himD. his room was always at a high temperature26. The underlined part “the winters of today are a walk in the park” in Paragraph 4 implies that today's winters are ________.A. warmB. quietC. shortD. pleasant27. The author suggests that people ________.A. store enough food for cold wintersB. lend the neighbors a helping handC. step outside and appreciate wintersD. say goodbye to modern technologyCYou might not realize just how much work goes into making a newspaper. Apart from searching for a good story and the endless editing required to correct mistakes, copy editors need to make sure that everything fits perfectly. A good headline tells as much as possible in a short space. There never seems to be quite enough space to express completely what you want to say.News headlines often focus on the central and most important new information. The relevantly insignificant information might be left out in order to stress the main idea or just to be brief. News headlines are featured by the vivid language. They add something special to attract readers’ eyes. Because the headline aims to describe the main focus of the story in six or seven words, every word counts and accuracy is decisive. For instance, “stab”(刺杀) is a better verb than “kill” because it tells the reader how the criminal did his deed; similarly, “Toyota” is a better noun than “car”. But the make of a good headline is not characterized necessarily by the amount of information in it. For instance, the front-page headline on the Los Angeles Times on September 11—the day New York’s World Trade Center was attacked—simply read “TERROR STRIKES”, all in capitals(大写字母). While these two words do not describe how, where or why the buildings were attacked, theywere accompanied by a half-page photo that captured(捕捉) the event in which around 3,000 people lost their lives.28. What is vital in making news besides a good story and perfect edition?A. An appropriate headline.B. A capital headline.C. Vivid language.D. A brief report.29. News headlines should be ________.A. attractiveB. countableC. insignificantD. long enough30. The underlined word “they” in the last paragra ph refers to ________.A. the buildingsB. the two wordsC. the peopleD. the twin towers31. The example of “TERROR STRIKES” is used to support the view that________.A. a good headline tells as much as possible in a short spaceB. news headines often focus on the central and most important news informationC. a good headline is not marked necessarily by the amount of information in itD. news headlines are featured by the vivid languageDWhenever we see a button, we want to press it because we know that something will happen. This is true in most cases, for example, on a doorbell. But some buttons are actually fake(假的), like the “close” button on a lift. Many people are in the habit of pressing the “close” button because they don’t have the pati ence to wait for the lift doors to shut. But lifts’ “close” buttons are a complete trick, at least in the US -the doors will not close any faster no matter how hard you press. It started in the 1990s when the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in the US, making sure that all lifts stayed open long enough so that people with disabilities could enter. Only US firefighters and repairmen can use the buttons to speed up the door-closing process if they have a code or special keys. But to normal lift rid ers, the buttons aren’t completely useless. According to psychologists, fake buttons can actually make you feel better by offering you a sense of control.“A sense of control is very important. It reduces stress and increases well-being,”said Ellen J. Langer, a psychology professor at HarvardUniversity. Experts also added that a lot of buttons that don’t do anything exist in our lives for this same purpose. For example, pedestrian crosswalk buttons don’t live up to their names either. Pressing them used to help make the traffic signals change faster, but that was before computer controlled traffic signals were introduced. But psychologists found it interesting that even when people are aware of these little “white lies”, they still continue to push fake but tons because as long as the doors eventually close, it is considered to be worth the effort.32. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?A. To explore the functions of fake buttons.B. To describe different buttons.C. To analyze various habits of pushing buttons.D. To explain the advantages and disadvantages of fake buttons.33. What can we learn about the “close” buttons on a lift in America?A. They work when people press them hard.B. They were designed only for a sense of control.C. They never speed up the door-closing process.D. They take the safety of the disabled into account.34. What can we infer about pedestrian crosswalk buttons?A. They can make people feel better.B. They help computers work faster.C. They can control the traffic signals.D. They help pedestrians cross quickly.35. Which may be the best title for the passage?A. Buttons in the USA.B. Buttons Always Lie.C. Buttons May not Work.D. “Close” Buttons on Lifts.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Corporate culture is the values and beliefs a company develops over time. The role of corporate culture is to improve a company’s mission and strategies, with long﹣term hopes of improvements in a company’s profit. Mostly corporate culture comes from a company’s top management. One role of corporate culture is to influence employee behavior, honesty, and compliance (服从). A company does not have to necessarily create a direct influence for these actions. A direct influence may be a set of written regulations or other policies, and while these may be in place, the corporate culture is usually more of an indirect influence. While many companies try to create corporate culture through the use of written policies, its role is harder to define. The human factor has an influence on how corporate culture is expressed. The way upper management acts and reacts to various situations defines how lower﹣level employees will act, and this aspect may be more important than any written policy.A company’s corporate culture can also extend beyond the walls of thebusiness. Consumers who believe a company to be honest and forthright(直率)may be more loyal in their buying behavior.Employees in a company’s customer service department can also exhibit positive corporate culture to outside individuals. In this case, the culture creates a link between the company’s employees and its customers. We have been volunteering at the shelter ever since. I was recently feeling the push to serve more, so I scheduled a Saturday visit. My daughter had social invitations, but she also felt the push to visit the shelter, so she planned to go there with her friends and me, later in the day instead. Wepiled up old blankets, sheets and pillows to take along and donate. My daughter and I stayed for 4-5 hours, beyond the time she had scheduled to meet friends for lunch. She chose to cancel her social date and spend more time with these animals despite the tough conditions. Tired and dirty, we felt blessed to share some time with people who care deeply for relieving the suffering of so many vulnerable beings. And then we went back. May all the sick and injured animals be relieved of their suffering.24.Why did the author plan a Saturday visit to the shelter?A.To apply to be a real social volunteer.B.To build up homes for homeless dogs.C.To do more work for homeless animals.D.To attend her daughter s gatherings with friends.25.According to the second paragraph, .A.not all of the hurt animals in the shelter could keep aliveB.the author s daughter finally accepted social invitationsC.the author merely fed sick dogs with his daughter and friendsD.most hurt animals in the shelter have a 50% chance of being alive26.What moved the author most while volunteering?A.The animals led a happy life in the shelter.B.The workers showed deep love to the animals.C.The workers were paid nothing to do their work.D.Many healthy animals would come back to the streets.27.What is the last paragraph mainly about?A.The schedule of the author s daughter.B.The author s wish to return to care animals.C.The reasons for the author s daughter missing her social date.D.The feelings of the father and daughter as volunteers in the shelter.CA survey of university backgrounds of heads of major global companies found that Harvard in the United States was the most likely place to have studied in.The Times Higher Education magazine ranked the universities attended by chief executive officers (CEO) of Fortune Global 500 companies. There are four US universities in the top 10, with three from France, two from Japan and one from South Korea. The highest ranked UK university is Oxford in 21st place. This league table, described as the Alma Mater Index, shows which universities around the world taught the bosses of some of the world s biggest companies. One in 20 had a degree from a single institution, Harvard. This included Margaret C. Whitman of Hewlett-Packard, Jeffrey R. Immelt of General Electric and Vittorio Colao of Vodafone. But the top 10 for producing business leaders does not contain all the usual names that appear at the top of university rankings. Oxford and Cambridge are absent, but the University of Pennsylvania in the US and Keio University in Japan are included, along with three French universities, headed by the Ecole Polytechnique.Across the top 100, universities from the US dominate, followed by universities in China, Japan, France and Germany. There are more CEOs who went to university in Asia than in Europe. In terms of national comparisons, UK universities produced the sixth highest number of global chief executives, with Oxford in 21st place and Cambridge in 45th place. But even though Harvard might have taught the biggest number of bosses from the top 500 companies, it was not attended by any of the heads of the biggest 10 companies, who were from a more diverse range of universities.Royal Dutch Shell is headed by a graduate of Zurich University of Applied Sciences; Walmart is headed by a student of Georgia Tech and Exxon Mobil has a chief executive from the University of Texas, Austin. Three of the leaders of these biggest companies went to university in China and the head of Volkswagen went to university in Stuttgart.28.How many Asian universities are among the world s top 10 universities for global CEOs?A.One.B.Two.C.Three.D.Four.29.What does the underlined word “dominate” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?A.Decrease.B.Accelerate.C.Take the lead.D.Make great progress.30.What can we learn about the UK universities?A.Cambridge University ranks highest among them.B.None of them are among the top 10 list of the survey.C.They performed better than French universities on the list.D.They produced the second most number of global CEOs.31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.The Rankings of the Famous Universities in the WorldB.Which Is Described as the Best University in the World?C.Students Are Currently Entering Various Top-class UniversitiesD.Which University Tops the League Table of Where Bosses Studied?D“Could your weekend lie-in (睡懒觉) kill you?” asked the Daily Mail. It is said in a study that sleeping more at weekends can increase the risk of heart disease. Since most of us change our sleep schedule depending on whether it s a work or non-work day, it s an interesting question. Is the lie-in really so dangerous? Researchers say that changing sleep patterns causes social jet lag. Is that even a thing?Changing our sleeping hours causes the effect of crossing a time zone—it makes us sleepy during the day. People who changed their sleep patterns were also more likely to gain weight during the study and more suited to going to bed and waking late because of the change of their biological clock. They were more at risk of these changes than earlier sleepers and risers. The study also shows an association between switching sleep patterns and changes in some blood results. It does not show that anyone s developing heart disease was because they had lie-ins.Jim Horne, one of the professors of the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University, says the concept of social jet lag is likely to feed our anxiety about sleep, so we should really stop worrying so much and have a limited weekend lie-in. Worry is bad for sleep and we naturally compensate for not getting enough rest in the week by lying-in at weekends, so we shouldn t stop doing it. However, we should limit the time.Studies show that if you accumulate a five-hour sleep debt during the week, then you only need one and a half hours of extra sleep on your days off to make up for it. It would be a shame to be scared of a lie-in. Studies of sleep and risk factors for heart disease can struggle to tell between poor sleep causing stress and stress disrupting sleep. Work stress can cause both a rise in blood pressure and changes in sleep patterns. Sleep is the test for the state of one s health, and the most important thing that happens when you don t get enough of it is that you feel sleepy.32.What s the probable effect of changing our sleep patterns?A.Becoming unhealthy.B.Losing weight quickly.C.Easily adapting to time zones.D.Becoming early sleepers and risers.33.What is Jim Horne s attitude towards the weekend lie-in?A.Negative.B.Doubtful.C.Unconcerned.D.Supportive.34.What does the underlined phrase “doing it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A.Lying-in.B.Worrying.C.Sleeping early.pensating for the limit.35.What can we infer from the text?A.The sleep debt must be paid off completely.B.The weekend lie-in is a bad habit for all people.C.The more hours one sleeps, the healthier he will be.D.Poor sleep may result from and cause stress in turn.第二节(共5小题; 每小题2分, 满分10 分)根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

They fill one with nostalgia(怀旧)in various degrees--some more, some less, and others none. That’s why one has conflicting feelings towards the old photos. Still kept with the current ones, they are even less favored than a daily-used cup, which is always close to the owner. How these pieces of thought influence me!Photos keep our images rather than our sentiment, which may not ren1ain.The image is always there, but not its owner, whom the photo cannot keep, neither can it keep the event.Of course, there are some of the photos still holding my affection, such as those taken with my family members, with favorite playmates, fellow girl-students and best friends, not only in pictures but also in my life and heart. Now,since I have learned all this,I will not allow myself to be included casually in a photo taken with others.I’ll make sure that the friendship can last before I take a photo with somebody.24.Why did the writer have only a few black-and-white pictures?A.She took fewer of them.B.She took photos thoughtlessly.C.She didn’t take good care of them.D.She only liked the bald baby picture.25.What can we get from the old photos request casually.D.To think carefully before.action.CAs an Asian country,Singapore has a reputation for being highly westernized, with English a1nong the country’s four official languages, but a couple of signs found on local buses that have recently become a hit online may say otherwise.Quite different from the English we know, the signs read, for example,“Here cannot go in instead of“No Entry”,and“Here can charge phone"instead of“Charge phone here”.This language that resembles English is called Singaporean English,or“Singlish”.The New York Times calls Singlish“patchwork”because Singapore consists of migrants(移民)from several countries including China,India and Malaysia, and they all speak their own versions of“English”.“Everyone who speaks it shapes it”wrote the newspaper. For example,in Singlish you can easily recognize influences from Chinese, including vocabulary such as“Mee Siam"and“da bao”.Sentence structures like“toilet where”instead of“where’s the toilet”also comefrom Chinese.Interesting and diverse as it may seem, the trend for Singlish js worrying Singapore’s government. It is concerned that the dialect is lowering the country’s English standard and may affect its relationship with visitors. It even started the Speak Good English Movement.Unfortunately, the problem was not solved.Instead,Singlish has boomed, especially among young people who think of it as a sign of being cool and a way of identifying themselves as Singaporean. But this doesn’t mean that Standard English is being abandoned by young people. In fact, they are much more capable than the government gives credit-they can speak both.“We are a nation good at code-switching-we know that the way we speak to friends or drivers must be different from how we act at work or school”wrote Cheryl,a Singaporean author,in Times magazine.“To actively urge us to give up a language that speaks to the very heart of who we are, that so beautifully represents the melting pot of Chinese,Indians,Malaysians and Eurasians that we are,is shortsighted,surely.”28.Why does Singapore have many different versions of English?A.It is made up of migrants.B.It is highly westernized.C.It is influenced by Chinese.D.It is affected by official languages.29.What is the purpose of starting the Speak Good English Movement?A.To stop the new trend.B.To better the relationship.C.To keep the promised to better your social life. Now,quitting smartphones has become thenew quitting smoking.Of course, technology does not yellow your teeth, cause disease or lead to cancer. But some individuals are so concerned that device addiction is damaging their mental health. In order to reduce their dependence, even in Silicon Valley, people are turning off the messages that constantly buzz for their attention, banning smartphones from the bedroom and, curiously, changing the colours on their screens to a less tempting scale of grey. The big tech companies will have to work out how to respond to this new generation of quitters.Facebook is the first to go public with its attempt, hoping its recent move can make the social network more homely.Last year the tech industry got a bad name-Big Tech with unfortunate echoes of other industries that have faced fierce opposition, including Big Tobacco.Like them, the tech industry has to reduce concern from a new generation of activist shareholders(股东)that are questioning its role in the world. These campaigns are never as fierce as those faced by Big Tobacco. In the1990s,socially responsible investors refused to put money in tobacco stocks. It is far difficult for investors to challenge Big Tech and hard to separate the good these companies do in the world-connecting old friends and giving space for people to share their ideas-from the bad.In the meantime, stopping using technology remains problematic. In The World Without Mind:The Existential Threat of Big Tech,Franklin Foer argues that tech should be seen in a similar way to junk food:a convenience that some reject for more continuing nutrition. So we need to do more to turn the tide.In the same way that public service announcements made smoking around your children taboo(禁忌),we can warn parents against losing themselves in their smartphones while taking care of kids.We can also create no-smartphone zones at dinner.Eventually, smartphones could be banned from all public places and help us give ourattention to the people around us instead.32.How did people keep close relationships with others in the past?A.By smoking.B.By drinking.C.By phoning.D.By dining out.33.Why is the tech industry called Big Tech?A.It plays a bad role in the world.B.It is as big as Big Tobacco.C.It has an unfortunate name.D.It is a giant in Silicon Valley.34.What can we infer from Franklin Foer’s argument about tech?A.It promotes social development.B.It is still favored by some people.C.It is worse than Big Tobacco.D.It offers continuing nutrition.34.Which can be the best title for the passage?A.Creating a No Smartphone Life.B.Smartphones Enrich Our Social Life.C.Smoking Does Greater Harm Than Smartphones Do.D.Quitting Smartphones ls the New Quitting Smoking.第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分〉根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

My daughter and I stayed for 4 -5 hours, beyond the time she had scheduled to meet friends for lunch. She chose to cancel her social date and spend more time with these animals despite the tough conditions. Tired and dirty, we felt blessed to share some time with people who care deeply for relieving the suffering of so many vulnerable beings. And then we went back. May all the sick and injured animals be relieved of their suffering.24.Why did the author plan a Saturday visit to the shelter?A. To apply to be a real social volunteer.B. The schedule of the author's daughter.B.The author's wish to return to care animals.C.The reasons for the author's daughter missing her social date.D.The feelings of the father and daughter as volunteers in the shelter.CA survey of university backgrounds of heads of major global companies found that Harvard in the United States was the most likely place to have studied in.The Times Higher Education magazine ranked the universities attended by chief executive officers (CEO)of Fortune Global 500 companies. There are four US universities in the top 10, with three from France, two from Japan and one from South Korea. The highest ranked UK university is Oxford in 21st place. This league table, described as the Alma Mater Index, shows which universities around the world taught the bosses of some of the world,s biggest companies. One in 20 had a degree from a single institution, Harvard. This included Margaret C. Whitman of Hewlett -Packard, Jeffrey R. Three of the leaders of these biggest companies went to university in China and the head of V olkswagen went to university in Stuttgart.28.How many Asian universities are among the world,s top 10 universities for global CEOs?A. It is said in a study that sleeping more at weekends can increase the risk of heart disease. Since most of us change our sleep schedule depending on whether it's a work or non-work day, it's an interesting question. Is the lie-in really so dangerous? Researchers say that changing sleep patterns causes social jet lag. Is that even a thing?Changing our sleeping hours causes the effect of crossing a time zone-it makes us sleepy during the day. People who changed their sleep patterns were also more likely to gain weight during the study and more suited to going to bed and waking late because of the change of their biological clock. They were more at risk of these changes than earlier sleepers and risers. The study also shows an association between switching sleep patterns and changes in some blood results. It does not show that anyone's developing heart disease was because they had lie-ins. Jim Horne, one of the professors of the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University, says the conceptof social jet lag is likely to feed our anxiety about sleep, so we should really stop worrying so much and have a limited weekend lie-in. Worry is bad for sleep and we naturally compensate for not getting enough rest in the week by lying-in at weekends, so we shouldn't stop doing it. Sleep is the test for the state of one's health, and the most important thing that happens when you don't get enough of it is that you feel sleepy. 32. What's the probable effect of changing our sleep patterns?A. Becoming unhealthy.B. Losing weight quickly.C. Easily adapting to time zones.D. Becoming early sleepers and risers.33.What is Jim Horne's attitude towards the weekend lie-in?A. Negative.B. Doubtful.C. Unconcerned.D. Supportive.34.What does the underlined phrase "doing it" in Paragraph 3 refer to?A. Lying-in.B. Worrying.C. Sleeping early.D. Compensating for the limit.35.What can we infer from the text?A.The sleep debt must be paid off completely.B.The weekend lie-in is a bad habit for all people.C.The more hours one sleeps, the healthier he will be.D.Poor sleep may result from and cause stress in turn.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

The shoe comes in two sizes:small that fits children aged 4 to 9 and large for children aged 9 to 14.Lee says he got the idea for the shoe while working as a volunteer in an orphanage in Kenya."…and let her toes stick out.And I just remember thinking, wouldn't it be nice if there were a pair of shoes that could grow with her feet?"However,Lee says it was not easy to turn his idea into a reality."I kept writing down I should do this because of this or because of that."Finally,in 2009 Lee founded a non﹣profit organization called Because International. In the office of Because International,Lee like ours?To understand the issue, let's take a look at three types of "waits".The very purest form of waiting is the Watched﹣Pot Wait.It is without doubt the most annoying of all.Take filling up the kitchen sink(洗碗池)as an example. There is absolutely nothing you can do while this is going on but keep both eyes fixed on the sink until it's full.During these waits, the brain slips away from the body and wanders about until the water runs over the edge of the counter and onto your socks. This kind of wait makes the waiter helpless and mindless.A cousin to the Watched﹣Pot Wait is the Forced Wait. This one requires a bit of discipline.Properly preparing packaged noodle soup required a ForcedWait.Directions are very specific."Bring three cups of water to boil, add mix, simmer three minutes, remove from heat, let stand five minutes."I have my doubts that anyone has actually followed the procedures strictly. After all,Forced Waiting requires patience.Perhaps the most powerful type of waiting is the Lucky﹣Break Wait. This type of wait is unusual in that it is for the most part voluntary.Unlike the Forced Wait, which is also voluntary, waiting for your lucky break does not necessarily mean that it will happen.Turning one's life into a waiting game requires faith and hope, and is strictly for the optimists among us.On the surface it seems as ridiculous as following the directions on soup mixes, but the Lucky﹣Break Wait well serves those who are willing to do it.As long as one doesn't come to rely on it,wishing for a few good things to happen never hurts anybody. We certainly do spend a good deal of our time waiting. The next time you're standing at the sink waiting for it to fill while cooking noodle soup that you'll have to eat until a large bag of cash falls out of the sky, don't be desperate. You're probably just as busy as the next guy.28.While doing a Watched﹣Pot Wait,we tend to B.A.keep ourselves busyB.get absent﹣mindedC.grow anxiousD.stay focused29.What is the difference between the Forced Wait and the Watched﹣Pot Wait?AA.The Forced Wait requires some self﹣control.B.The Forced Wait makes people passive.C.The Watched﹣Pot Wait needs directions.D.The Watched﹣Pot Wait engages body and brain.30.What can we learn about the Lucky﹣Break Wait?BA.It is less voluntary than the Forced Wait.B.It doesn't always bring the desired result.C.It is more fruitful than the Forced Wait.D.It doesn't give people faith and hope.31.The author supports his view by C.A.exploring various causes of "waits".B.describing detailed processes of "waits".C.analyzing different categories of "waits"D.revealing frustrating consequences of "waits"【解答】BDBC28.B.细节理解题.根据第二段There is absolutely nothing you can do while this is going on but keep both eyes fixed on the sink until it's full.During these waits, the brain slips away from the body and wanders about until the water runs over the edge of the counter and onto your socks可知当我们盯着罐子看的时候,我们倾向于心不在焉;故选B.29.A.细节理解题.根据第三段After all,Forced Waiting requires patience可知强迫等待与被监视的等待的区别是强迫等待需要一些自制力;故选A.30.B.细节理解题.根据文章Unlike the Forced Wait, which is also voluntary, waiting for your lucky break does not necessarily mean that it will happen可知幸运的等待并不总是带来预期的结果;故选B.31.C.推理判断题.根据文章To understand the issue, let's take a look at three types of"waits可知作者证明自己的观点通过分析不同类别的"等待;故选C.32.(8分)A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night's sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off﹣if it is milked from a cow at night.Researchers have discovered that "night milk" contains more melatonin(褪黑激素),which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety. The study,by researchers from Seoul,South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night. Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer. While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.Milk is also sugar﹣free and additive﹣free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.32.According to the text, the mice fed with daytime milk anxiety"可知,褪黑色素可以使人有困意,因此可以用于安眠药中,D项正确.C 项,"褪黑激素使得人们更加有能量",与文中所提到的褪黑激素使老鼠变得没有活力不符,C项错误;B项,"牛奶中有很多褪黑激素",由第三段第一句"Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin"可知晚上产的牛奶中存在很多褪黑色素而不是所有牛奶,B项错误.A项,"褪黑激素在老鼠身上测试过10次",文章未提及,A项错误;故正确答案为D.34.A.主旨大意题.本文主要讲了在老鼠身上做了实验得知晚上产的牛奶中含有更多褪黑色素,有助于睡眠,故正确答案为A.35.D.细节理解题.由文章第二段"Researchers have discovered that'night milk'contains more melatonin …"和倒数第二段"Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to sleep, they die within a month.(36)COne idea is that sleep helps us strengthen new memories.(37)E We know that, while awake, fresh memories are recorded by reinforcing (加强)connections between brain cells, but the memory processes that take place while we sleep have been unclear.Support is growing for a theory that sleep evolved so that connections between neurons(神经元)in the brain can be weakened overnight, making room for fresh memories to form the next day.(38)FNow we have the most direct evidence yet that he is right.(39)G The synapses in the mice taken at the end of a period of sleep were 18 percent smaller than those taken before sleep, showing that the connections between neurons weaken while sleeping. If Tononi's theory is right,it would explain why, when we miss a night′s,we find it harder the next day to concentrate and learn new information ﹣our brains may have smaller room for new experiences.Their research also suggests how we may build lasting memories over time even though the synapses become thinner. The team discovered that some synapses seem to be protected and stayed the same size.(40)B"You keep what matters," Tononi says.A.We should also try to sleep well the night before.B.It's as if the brain is preserving its most important memories.C.Similarly,when people go for a few days without sleeping, they get sick.D.The processes take place to stop our brains becoming loaded with memories.E.That's why students do better in tests if they get a chance to sleep after learning.F."Sleep is the price we pay for learning," says Giulio Tononi, who developed the idea.G.Tononi's team measured the size of these connections,or synapses,in thebrains of 12mice.【解答】CEFGB36.C. 故答案选F.39.G. 故答案选G.40.B.
