Profile: Sijia Lv is currently a postgraduate at Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications. Her major is management science and engineering. She got undergraduate degree in the same school. My hometownMy hometown Dongtai is a beautiful coastal town. It lies in southern tip of Yancheng. East of the city is Yellow Sea. Dongtai has a wealth of history and culture, in the history a number of literati had worked here, such as Fan Zhongyan, Yan Shu and Lv Yijian. There are many local specialties, for instance embroidery made by hair, fish soup noodles and explosive watermelon. In the several years, Dongtai has accelerated the pace of construction. In 2013, it became one of the national top one hundred county-level cities. The government has also stressed the development of the economy. With the completion of Sutong Bridge, Dongtai has also been radiated by Shanghai. More and more senior residential buildings and shopping malls can been seen beside the wide roads. In 2015, Dongtai will start building EMU tracks and stations. I believe it will bring much benefit to this coastal city.Besides fasten developed economy, Dongtai still has beautiful landscapes. Fairies Cultural Park tells people touching love story about Dongyong and Seventh fairy. Taishan temple is famed Buddhist shrine. Yellow Sea forest Park honors the reputation of a natural oxygen bar. and there are many other famous attractions.Dongtai is a vibrant and warm city which welcomes people to live and work there. Now many young workers prefer to go to big cities than to stay in their hometown and make contributions. Dongtai has the same problem. I hope more youngers can take Dongtai into consideration because it is really a great city with clean streets and job opportunities.。

She was just 27 years old.Over time, Kelley has learned to move her fingers enough to use a computer and to get around daily with the help of a wheelchair. Although that progress is not enough to allow her to continue her previous career, other opportunities have opened up for her.Kelley said, "The accident changed my outlook on life, and I immediately looked to education since I had no degree." Most traditional programs did not allow her to balance her education with a growing family. Then, Kelley found Penn State Distance Education.Distance Education is hard work, but my children make it all worthwhile. Even if for some reason I can't work after obtaining my degree, I will be an educated person, setting a good example for my children and having gained the knowledge that canhelp them in their future efforts. Distance Education has changed my life from tragedy to triumph," she said. Distance Education affords me an opportunity to pursue my own goals and personal work. My education is separate from my " issues regarding my disability or my family life and caring for my children."Commenting on McKee's experience, Gary E. Miller, vice president for Distance Education and director of the World Campus, noted, "Kelley's story is a wonderful reminder about the impact of Distance Education on the lives of our students who cannot meet their needs through traditional on-campus programs."Jane Ireland, academic advisor for Distance Education and the World Campus, added: "Kelley reminds us of the mission we have in Distance Education--to bring a quality education and experience to students regardless of their geographic vocation or life circumstances. Kelley is a wonderful example for us of the great effect we have on the lives of a great many students who truly need access to education."Kelley is a successful student, carrying credits each semester. She plans to complete her bachelor's degree in letters, arts, and sciences, then continue on to obtain an online master's degree. After graduation, McKee hopes to work with injured or disabled individuals, possibly in counseling in a rehabilitation setting. Jane Ireland has no doubt Kelley will achieve her goals.Kelley is thankful to her outstanding instructors and a number of student support services, including financial aid, disability services and vocational rehabilitation. Many of these faculty and staff, however, say that it is Kelley McKee who has been outstanding.Susan Waitkus, instructor in English at Penn State's DuBois Campus, stated, Kelley inspires not only other students, but also faculty fortunate enough to know her. Our reactions help to determine whether our child will repeat his behavior or whether he will do something different. This statement is a very important part of a principle of behavioral psychology. The principle states that a behavior is influenced or affected by how the environment ---- people, places and things ---- immediately responds to the behavior. Perhaps without realizing it, you have used this principle many times. On the occasion when you told your child what a good boy he was after he cleaned up his room, you used the principle. When you sent your child to his room for fighting with his brother, you used the principle. When I gave Kim a cookie after she started to cry, I used the principle. In each of these examples, a particular behavior occurred first ---- cleaning up a room, fighting, and crying. In addition, there was a reaction to eachbehavior ---- the child was praised, sent to his room, or given a cookie. By these actions, we have influenced the previous behaviors and have helped to determine whether those behaviors will occur again in the future.(10分)1、1.What is the lecture mainly about?(单选题)A、Children and environmental protection.B、Children’s behavior and fighting.C、Children’s behavior and our response.D、Children and principles.2、2.On what kind of principle is the lecture based?(单选题)A、A principle in chemistry.B、A principle in behavioral psychology.C、A principle in physics.D、A principle in geology.3、3.Who do you think the audience at this lecture might be?(单选题)A、T eachersB、DoctorsC、Social workers.D、Parents4、4.According to the lecture, why was the child sent to his room?(单选题)A、As a kind of punishment.B、As a kind of reward.C、As an experiment on the principle.D、As an example of the principle.5、5.What does the lecturer mean by "environment"?(单选题)A、Rooms, cookies and toys.B、Water, air and forest.C、People, places and things.D、Family, school and friends.2、The fridge is considered a necessity. It has been so since the 1960s when packaged food first appeared with the label: “store inthe refrigerator”.In my fridgeless Fifties childhood, I was fed well and healthily. The milkman came daily, the grocer, the butcher, the baker, and theice-cream man delivered two or three times a week. The Sunday meat would last until Wednesday and surplus(剩余的) bread and milk became all kinds of cakes. Nothing was wasted, and we were never troubled by rotten food. Thirty years on, food deliveries have ceased; fresh vegetables are almost unobtainable in the country. The invention of the fridge contributed comparatively little to the art of food preservation. A vast way of well-tried techniques already existed ? natural cooling, drying, smoking, salting, sugaring, bottling ...What refrigeration did promote was marketing ? marketing hardware and electricity, marketing soft drinks, marketing dead bodies of animals around the globe in search of a good price.Consequently, most of the world’s fridges are to be found, not inthe tropics where they might prove useful, but in the wealthy countries with mild temperatures where they are climatically almost unnecessary. Every winter, millions of fridges hum away(不断地嗡嗡作响) continuously, and at vast expense, busily maintainanartificially-cooled space inside and artificially-heated house ?while outside, nature provides the desired temperature free of charge. The fridge’s e ffect upon the environment has been evident, while its contribution to human happiness has been insignificant. If you don’t believe me, try it yourself, invest in a food cabinet (橱柜)and turn off your fridge next winter. You may miss the hamburgers, but at least you’ll get rid of that terrible hum.(10分)1、1.The statement “In my fridgeless Fifties childhood, I was fedwell and healthily.” (Para.2) suggest that _______.(单选题)A、the author was well-fed and healthy even without a fridge inhis fiftiesB、the author was not accustomed to using fridges even in hisfiftiesC、there was no fridge in the author’s home in the 1950sD、the fridge was in its early stage of development in the 1950s2、2.Why does the author say that nothing was wasted before the invention of fridges?(单选题)A、People would not buy more food than was necessary.B、Food was delivered to people two or three times a week.C、Food was sold fresh and did not get rotten easily.D、People had effective ways to preserve their food.3、3.Who benefited the least from fridges according to theauthor?(单选题)A、InventorsB、ConsumersC、ManufacturersD、Traveling salesmen(巡回推销员)4、4.Which of the following phrases in Para.5 indicates the fridge’s negative effect on the environment?(单选题)A、“Hum away continuously”.B、“Climatically almost unnecessary”.C、“Artificially-cooled space”.D、“With mild temperatures”.5、5.What is the author’s overall attitude toward fridges?(单选题)A、NeutralB、CriticalC、ObjectiveD、Compromising完形填空题1、Scientists have studied consumer behavior recently and found 21 the look of the package has a great effect 22 the"quality" of theproduct and on how well it 23 , because "Consumers generallycannot 24 between a product and its package. Many products are packages and many packages are products," as Louis Cheskin, the first social scientist studying consumers’ feeling for packaging, noticed.Colors are one of the best tools in packaging. Studies of eyemovement have shown that colors draw human 25 quickly. Take V8 for example. For many years, the bright red color of tomatoes and carrots on the thin bottle makes you feel that it is very good for your body. Xie Wenping, 32, used to follow his grandfather who made elephant-foot drums for a living to learn how to make a drum. “I had decided to make more and better drums when I grew up,” Xie said. The elephant-foot drum is the most typical musical instrument of the Dai ethnic group. The drum-making skill was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in 2011.Elephant-foot drums carry great cultural importance. However, making an elephant-foot drum is no easy task. “Making an elephant-foot drum takes about 30 steps and one month,” Xie explained. After picking the wood, one needs to carve (雕刻) the wood into an elephant-leg-like shape and hollow out the inside so that the drum can make a sound. The drum surface is made of cowhide (牛皮), which needs to go through several steps such as leather selection (皮料选择),cleaning, air drying and cutting. Then comes the painting. The drum is painted with patterns showing ethnic elements and covered with a protective topcoat (防护面漆). The finishing steps include tuning (调音), and polishing the fur. “A good elephant-foot drum should have a thick and loud sound when beaten,” Xie said. The repetition of the work might not be so exciting, but whenever Xie sees his grandfather’s smile while making the drum, he feels encouraged again. “Over the years, the number of craftspeople (工匠) skilled in making elephant-foot drums has gone down,” Xie said. “I feel like it’s my responsibility to carry it on.”Xie has innovated (创新) the form of the drum. To make it easier for the elephant-foot drum to spread to places outside Y unnan, Xie came up with the idea of making a mini kind of the drum and designed key chains shaped like the elephant-foot drum.9.According to Xie, the process of making an elephant-foot drum is ________.A.easy B.challenging C.boring D.exciting 10.From the passage, we can know that ________.A.many young craftsmen are learning the drum-making skills nowB.Xie had decided to make more and better drums when he was 32C.the drum has been given new life thanks to Xie’s creative designD.before painting, Xie needs to tune and polish the fur to make the drum11.What does the word “hollow” mean in the fourth paragraph?A.挖空B.填满C.停止D.切断12.What’s the best title of the passage?A.The Hard Time for the Drum B.Xie’s Innovation of the DrumC.The Story Between Xie and the Drum D.The Responsibility of XieWith a habit of drinking coffee on weekends while doing schoolwork, Wu Zibo, a 17-year-old student from Beijing No. 4 High School, wanted to order a cup of Moutai-flavored latte (茅台味拿铁). “I wonder how my father’s favorite Chinese liquor (白酒) would taste with my favorite coffee.” Wu said.Moutai, known as the national liquor brand of China, made a coffee called “Jiangxiang Latte” with Luckin (瑞幸) Coffee. It is put into a bag with a Moutai picture and has less than 0.5percent of 53 degrees Moutai in a cup. The two companies sold 5.42 million cups and earned 100 million yuan just on the first day after it came out, China Daily reported.Independent food industry researcher Zhu Danpeng said the partnership was good for both brands. “Moutai and Luckin are the leading companies in the liquor and coffee field,” Zhu said. “On the one hand, Moutai becomes younger through making things together with Luckin. On the other hand, for Luckin, it has collected more older customers and become more popular.”Many brands choose to have a partnership and make products together. However, wrong partnerships may have bad influence on the brands. For example, the coffee brand Manner and the brand Louis Vuitton (LV) asked customers to buy two books at the price of 580 yuan so that they can get a free cloth LV bag. 第2次作业一、阅读理解(本大题共100分,共5小题,每小题20分) 1.Prehistoric men and women enjoyed a more varied diet than people do now, since they ate species of plant and several hundreds thousands types of living things. But only a tiny percentage of these were ever domesticated. Modern shops have hastened a trend towards specialization which began in the earliest days of agriculture. The food of the rich countries has become cheaper relative to wages. It is speedily distributed in supermarkets. But the choice annually becomes less and less great. Even individual foods themselves become more standardized. We live in theworld of carrot specially blunted in order to avoid making a hole in the bag, and the tomato grown to meet a demand for a standard weight of weighting tomatoes to a kilo. Siri von Reis asks: "Only the three major cereals (谷物类食物)and perhaps ten other widely cultivated species stand between famine and survival for the world" s human population and a handful of drug plants has served Western civilization for several thousand years. A rather obvious question arises: Are we missing something?” After all, there are 800 000 species of plant on earth.(1). Tn prehistoric times people.A.ate much more than we do todayB.lived mainly on plant foodC.had a wide-ranging dietD.were more fussy about what they ate(2).Most of us have come to expectA.no variation in our dietB. a reduction in food suppliesC. a specialist dietD.food conforming to a set standard(3). The specialization of food was started byA .B . the emergence of supermarkets the rise of agriculture the rich countries the modern shops (4).According to the passage, people in the West today survive on.A.carrots and tomatoesB.several thousand types of plants and cerealsc.a very small number of cultivated foodsD. special species planted one thousand years ago(5). The conclusion seems to be that we.A.could make use of more natural speciesB.don't cultivate the right kind of foodc.produce more food than we needD.cultivate too many different species2.human body is distributed (分布)in two different ways. Some fat people have a large chest and no waistline(腰身),looking rather like apples. Others are fatter below the waist, looking more like pears.Doctors in Cambridge, England have been examining the relationship between health and fat (脂肪)distribution. They find that the pear- shaped fat people have fewer problems than the apple-shaped fat people. What seems to be most important is not how much fat you have but where you have it. The doctors measured the apple-shaped women and peai,--shaped women with X-ray scanners (X 光扫描器).Human beingshave two types of fat:one is outside fat, that is the fat below the skin, and the other is inside fat that lies inside the body. Using the X-ray scanners, the doctors found that the “apples” have a large amoun t of inside fat.Tf this inside fat is much more than outside fat, it wi11 probably cause heal th problems such as obesi ty (月巴月半症). The best treatment for obesity is to reduce the inside fat. But unfortunately diet treatment (饮食疗法)simply makes an apple-shaped person into a smaller apple and a pear-shaped person into a smaller pear. At the moment there is no effective way of reducing the inside fat.(1).According to the relation between heal th and fatnessA.apple-shaped fat people have fewer problems than pear-shaped peopleB.it' s better to be apple-shaped than to be pear-shapedc.it' s better to be pear-shaped than to be apple-shapedD. fatness is the most dangerous enemy to health(2). The most important thing about fat people seems to beA.the amount of fat they haveB.the knowledge of which typo of the fat people they belong toC.the amount of the outside fat they haveD.the place where they have the fat(3).The basic reason why some people suffer from obesity is that •A.they take very little exercise every dayB.they have much more inside fat than is neededc.they are examined by X-ray scanners quite oftenD.they eat too much(4).According to what is mentioned in the passage, the best treatment for obesity at present is .A.to reduce the amount of food and drinksB.to make the body shape smallerC.already known to those people in troubleD.still to be found.3.University of Arizona researcher Dr. William Rathji says that after a study based on looking into garbage cans, the average family wastes at least $150 per year in food."Homemakers go out of their way to save pennies at the store and thendon't real ize that waste of edible (可食用的)foods adds up much moreat homo," said Dr. Rathji. He was one of about 100 food experts who metin Boise for a conference on food waste and ways to prevent it.American families throw out between 8% and 20% of edible food at a costof $4. 5 billion per year. That" s almost as much as the federal government spends every year for food stamps and child nutrition programs. He found that food items which are costly and in short supply tend to be wasted more. During the 1973 meat shortage, meat waste increased to 9%, compared with 3% in 1974 and 1975. Sugar and sugar products waste jumped to 19% in 1975, when sugar prices doubled from the previous year.Dr. Rathji theorizes that high prices force consumers to experiment, sometimes buy in large quantities. In the case of meat, sometimes low-priced cuts for unappetizing varieties are purchased, consumers then tend to waste more.Ilis theory is that the more variety in food bought, the more wasted. Regular bread is wasted at about a 10% rate, but specialty breads and rolls are wasted at a 20% rate.If people are eating the same thing every day, they learn how to manage it. But if you" re trying to pull something out of the cookbook every night, that's bound to be some waste.Another finding is that lower income families waste less food than middle and upper income families. And the study found that dog food, which accounts for 8% of a shopping cart, is rarely wasted. Fresh produce and frozen items arc more likely to be wasted. The study also showed people with the most knowledge of safe, edible food waste the least. Much food is tossed out because a homemaker suspects it is spoiled when it is not.(1).Large quantities of food are thrown out because a homemaker.A.thinks they are not deliciousB.says they taste bitter and hotC.thinks they smell badD.suspects they are spoiled when they are not(2).American families throw out between of edible food every year.A.5%〜8%B.8%-10%B.20%〜28%D.8%—20%(3).When sugar prices doubled, waste of sugar.A.went downB.went upc.stayed the sameD. was cut in half(4).Which of the following statements is true?A.American housewives are not good homemakers.B.Upper-income families are more wasteful than lower-income ones.c.American families throw away almost as much food as they consume.D.Americans waste a great deal of dog food.(5).When do American families waste more food?A.When prices arc high.B.When food is scarce.c.When they think it is spoiled.D. It listed all the tradesmen in each village in my part of the country, and it was impressive to see the great variety of services which were available on one'''' s own doorstep in the late Victorian countryside. Nowadays a superficial traveller in rural England might conclude that the village tradesmen still flourishing were either selling frozen food to the inhabitants or selling antiques to visitors. Nevertheless, this would really be a false impression. Admittedly there has been a contraction (收缩) of village commerce, but its vigor is still remarkable. Our local grocer''''s shop, for example, is actually expanding inspite of the competition from supermarkets in the nearest town. Women sensibly prefer to go there and exchange the local news while doing their shopping, instead of queuing (排队) up at a supermarket. And the proprietor (店主) knows well that personal service has a substantial cash value. His prices may be a bit higher than those in the town, but he will deliver anything at any time. His assistants think nothing ofbicycling on the village street in their lunch hour to take a pieceof cheese to an old age pensioner (领养老金) who sent her order by word of mouth with a friend who happened to be passing. The more affluent customers telephone their shopping lists and the goods areon their doorsteps within an hour. They have only to hint at a fancy for some commodity outside the usual stock and the grocer, a red-faced figure, instantly obtains it for them. The village gains from this sort of enterprise, of course. But I also find it satisfactory because a village shop offers one of the few ways in which a modest individualist can still get along in the world without attaching himself to the big battalions of industry or commerce. The writer implies that one disadvantage of town shops is that __.A. their prices are higherB. people cannot telephone themC. their staff may make less trouble to satisfy customersD. one has 10 queue up to pay in them11. A man walked into a restaurant that advertised having the longest menu in the world. The manager was very proud of being able toprovide any dish, no matter how unusual. At the bottom of the menu, there was a notice that said, “If you do not see the dish you require on this menu, please tell us and we will add i t to the menu immediately.”The man looked at the menu and decided to make life really difficult for the manager and his chef. He would order something that was very unusual. When the waiter came up to take his order, he said, “You say you can serve any dish, anything at all, even if it''''s not on your menu, which is the longest menu in the world.”“That is correct, sir. We have never yet been unable to meet our customers'''' requirements.”“Very well,” the man said. “In that case, bring me two elephan t ears on toast. Indian, not African.”The waiter wrote down on his pad:Two Indian elephant ears on toast. “Very good, sir”, he said. “That shouldn''''t take long. ”He walked away quickly. The man was very surprised and rather disappointed. Then he smiled as the waiter returned with a very unhappy look on his face.“Ah! ”the man said. “You can’t bring me elephant ears on toast, can you? ”The waiter was very apologetic.“I’m very sorry, sir, and this is most embarrassing, ” he said, “but I’m afraid we can’t. Our lives would be the same. We would have to use bikes, horses, or our feet to get to places. And we couldn''t go as far as we are used to going. But we do have cars. With cars, people can come and go as they please. They can work far from home. Many people live in the country. But they work in the city. Most of them get there in cars. This means that there are a lot of cars on the road. Are there too many cars on the road? Some people think so. So they are asking that we take trains and buses. But not everyone can do this. Some people must take their cars. This is because no trains or buses go where they have to go. Maybe other people could go to work with them. Then there wouldn''t be so many cars on the road. What will our lives be like in times to come? Maybe we won''t need cars so much. Maybe more of us will work at home. Maybe trains and buses will go to more places. Then more people will be in them. This will mean more room on our streets and roads. It would be nice if people walk more. They might like to step along a street or road. They would not get far very fast. But they would have the time to look around them. Who knows? They might even feel better, too!(1). What's not the possible reason why there are a lot of cars on the road?A.Because everyone likes to drive his own car to do whatever he likes.B.Because the number of trains and buses is small.C.Because many people who live in the country go to work in cars in the city.D. Long ago there was a little boy who wanted to be a soldier more than anything else in the world. His brothers and sisters playedother games while he was playing soldier. Later he went to a military (军事的) school and studied very hard. When he was less than eighteen, he became a soldier. But the small man wanted power (t权力). He wanted to tell people and nations and the whole world what to do. He kept on working and studying until he became a general in the French Army. His name was Napoleon Bonaparte, and he finally became emperor of France. He was famous as an emperor and for a while he won all the wars and became a national hero. But he was not a kind man.He could be charming (迷人的) when he wanted to be. But he was also rude and very cruel, and many people died so that he could win his wars. Napoleon did one thing that was very important to the United States. He sold a huge piece of land in North America to the Untied States and got a lot of money and he could go on fighting a war with England. And Napoleon rose to great power. Then things began to go badly for him. Some radio broadcastingstations use hotlines to encourage the listeners to take part in the talk shows. That''s a good idea. Yet, the fact is, some people do nothing but break the whole programme. Some people know little about the topic under discussion. Sometimes they do not even know what the host (主持人) is talking about. So the host has to tell the caller what the show is about. Usually the caller will ask a few questions which express hope and show his ignorance (无知}. Then the host has to answer and explain——how silly this is! It wastes a lot of time.It seems that some people phone the hotlines in fun. They just wantto let the listeners hear them. They don''t care what the topic is, whether they themselves are interested in or how silly they appear to be.I think that it''s necessary for radio stations to improve the hotline programmes. In my opinion, if a caller doesn''t know what is going on, the operator should not let the callers take part in it.(1). The sentence "some people do nothing but break the whole programmes" may tell us that ( ).A.radio stations use hotlines in a wrong wayB.it is a factC.it is a good ideaD. some people have unclear thoughts(2). The shop was just around the corner from my office. I still remember how it was that day: the first sign of spring mixing with the soft coal smoke from thefactories and the street smells of the poor neighborhood. As I turned the corner on my way to office, I once more looked at the poor collection of toys in the dusty window. And then I remembered the coming birthday of my small niece in Cleveland. For years I was inthe habit of sending gifts to her. Therefore I stopped and examined the window to see if there might be anything appropriate. I looked at the collection of unappealing objects–a red toy fire engine, some lead soldiers, cheap baseballs, bottles of ink, pens, yellowed stationery (文具), and garish (俗气的) advertisements for soft-drink. And when I was about to leave because of disappointment, my eyes eventually came to the doll in one corner, a doll with the strangest, most charming expression on her face.
