Tiny forests were first pioneered as a concept in the 1970s by Dr Miyawaki, a Japanese botanist. As he went on to share his concept with others, the idea soon took off in India and other countries before eventually reaching Europe, where it became popular in places like France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
In a Tiny Forest, there must be a minimum of 600 trees, and the trees are planted much closer together and without chemicals or fertilisers (肥料). There are usually around 30 different kinds of all-native tree species (物种). This variety, coupled with the fact that tiny forests grow up to ten times faster than standard forests, means they attract a rich abundance of wildlife. It’s also thought that these places could help reduce the risk of flooding, remove carbon from the atmosphere and fight climate change, as well as improving the mental health of those living locally.

At that time, computers were large and expensive. Computer network didn’t work well. If one computer in the network broke down, then the whole network stopped. So a new network system had to be set up. It should be good enough to be used by many different computers. If part of the network was not working, information could be sent through another part. In this way computer network system would keep on working on the time.At first the Internet was only used by the government, but in the early 1970s, universities, hospitals and banks were allowed to use it too. However, computers were still very expensive and the Internet was difficult to use. By the start of the 1990s, computers became cheaper and easier to use. In this way, hundreds of new words were introduced into English and Spanish vocabularies. Today life is changing very fast, and language is changing fast too. There are several major language families in the world. Most houses have a garden, even if it is a small one, and the garden is usually loved. The house and the garden are the private space of a person. In a crowded city a person knows that he or she has a private space which is only for him or herself and for invited friends.People usually like to mark their space. If you are on the beach you may have spread yourtowels around you; on the train you may have put your coat or small bag on the seat beside you; in a library you may spread your books around you,Once I was travelling on a train to London. I was in a section for four people and there was a table between us. The man opposite to me had his briefcase on the table. There was no space on my side of the table at all. I was unhappy. They did not have the kind of machinery that builders and engineers have today.”“I agree that the pyramids in Egypt are wonderful,” the second man said, “but I do not think they are the greatest wonder. I believe computers are more wonderful than the pyramids. They have taken people to the moon and brought them back safely. In seconds, they carry out mathematical calculations that would take a person a hundred years to do.”He turned to the third man and asked, “What do you think is the greatest wonder in the world?”The third man thought for a long time, and then he said, “Well, I agree that the pyramids are wonderful, and I agree that computers are wonderful, too. However, in my opinion, the most wonderful thing in the world is this thermos.”And he took a thermos out of his bag and held it up.The other two men were very surprised. “A thermos?” they exclaimed. “But that’s a simple thing.”“Oh, no, it’s not, “the third man said. “In the winter you put in a hot drink and it stays hot. At twenty-one, she left the orphanage and began work as a secretary. And then, in 1975, while she was still working as an ordinary secretary, something special happened. She entered the Miss Hong Kong competition and won it. This was the turning point in her life. Now her name, Mary Cheung, was known to everybody.Mary entered the competition because she wanted to show that orphanage girls could be something. Winning the competition gave her the chance to start a new life. This led her first into television and then into business as a manager. Luckily, she had a boyfriend (who later became her husband) to help her.Mary studied management at Hong Kong Polytechnic and graduated in 1980. She started her own business in 1985. They could all travel together.Mr. Hagen and his wife had a third child last year. This made them sell a second car and buy a van. There are seven seats in the van, and the sixth and seventh seats are used to put other things, for a family of five must carry many suitcases when they travel. When they arrive at their grandparents’ home, the suitcases are brought into the room and the two seats can then carry the grandparents.Americans call vans motor homes. A motor home is always used for holidays. When a family is traveling to the mountains or to the seaside, they can live in their motor home for a few days or weeks. All the members of a big family can enjoy a happier life when they are traveling together. That is why motor homes have become very popular. In America there are many parks for motor homes.1. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken, or written in letters we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their combinations — the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and feelings. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary (文字的) style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and rude.1. The origin of language ________.A. is reflected in sounds and lettersB. is handed down from generation to generationC. dates back to the prehistoric periodD. is a problem not yet solved2. According to the passage, words are _________.A. visual lettersB. represented by soundsC. represented either by sounds or lettersD. signs called letters3. The power of words lies in their _________.A. beautyB. accuracyC. combinationsD. charm4. The secret of a writer’s success is the use of words that _________.A. recall to us the glad and sad events of our pastB. are arranged in a creative wayC. are as beautiful as musicD. agree with certain literary style5. The author of the passage advises us _________.A. to use words carefully and accuratelyB. not to use silly and rude wordsC. to become a slave of wordsD. to use emotional wordsPassage 3Many people believe they are supposed to drink eight glasses of water a day, or about two liters. Why? Because that is what they have been told all their life. But a new report offers some different advice. Experts say people should obey their bodies; they should drink as much water as they feel like drinking. The report says most healthy people meet their daily needs for liquid by letting thirst be their guide. The report is from the Institute of Medicine, part of the National Academies. This organization provides scientific and technical advice to the government and the public. The report contains some general suggestions. The experts say women should get about two-point-seven liters of water daily. Men should get about three-point-seven liters. But wait — in each case, that is more than eight glasses. There is an important difference. The report does not tell people how many glasses of water to drink. In fact, the experts say it may be impossible to know how many glasses are needed to meet these guidelines. This is because the daily water requirement can include the water content in foods. People do not get water only by forcing themselves to drink a set number of glasses per day. People also drink fruit juices and sodas and milk. They drink coffee and tea. These all contain water. As you might expect, the Institute of Medicine says people need to drink more water when they are physically active. The same is true of those who live in hot climates. Depending on heat and activity, people could need two times as much water as others do.1. According to the passage, experts advise people to _______.A. drink eight glasses of water a dayB. drink as much water as they feel like drinkingC. drink a glass of water after each mealD. drink no less than eight glasses of water a day2. Most healthy people meet their daily needs for water by drinking _______.A. when they are tiredB. when they are sweatingC. when they are thirstyD. when they are hungry3. People need to drink more water ________.A. when they are physically activeB. when they live in hot climatesC. when they are running long distanceD. all of the abovePassage 4Man has always wanted to fly. Some of the greatest men in history have thought about the problem. One of these, for example, was the great Italian artist, Leonardo da V inci(达•芬奇). In the sixteenth century he made designs for machines that would fly. But they were never built.Throughout history, other less famous men have wanted to fly. An example was a man in England 800 years ago. He made a pair of wings from chicken feathers. Then he fixed them to his body and jumped into the air from a tall building. He did not fly very far. Instead, he fell to the ground and broke every bone in his body. The first real steps took place in France, in 1783. Two brothers, the Montgolfiers, made a very large”hot air balloon”. They knew that hot air rises. Why not fill a balloon with it?The balloon was made of cloth and paper. In September of that year, the King and Queen of France came to see the balloon. They watched it carry the very first air passengers into the sky. The passengers were a sheep and a chicken. We do not know how they felt about the trip. But we do know that the trip lasted eight minutes and that the animals landed safely. Two months later, two men did the same thing. They rose above Paris in a balloon of the same kind. Their trip lasted twenty-five minutes and they travelled about eight kilometres.1. Leonardo da V inci ________.A. said that man would fly in the sky one dayB. built a kind of machine which never flewC. drew many beautiful pictures of birdsD. made designs for flying machine2. In September 1783.C. In November 1783.D. In the seventeenth century.Passage 5Habits, whether good or bad, are gradually formed. When a person does a certain thing again, he is driven by some unseen force to do the same thing repeatedly, then a habit is formed. Once a habit is formed, it is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to get rid of. It is therefore very important that we should pay great attention to the formation of habits. Children often form bad habits, some of which remain with them as long as they live. Older persons also form bad habits lasting as long as they live, and sometimes become ruined by them. There are other habits which, when formed in early life, are of great help. Many successful men say that much of their success has something to do with certain habits in early life, such as early rising, honesty and so on.Among the habits which children should not form are laziness, lying, stealing and so on. These are all easily formed habits. Unfortunately older persons often form habits which could have been avoided (避免).We should keep away from all these bad habits, and try to form such habits as will be good for ourselves and others.1. ________ are formed little by little.A. Good habitsB. Bad habitsC. Both good habits and bad habitsD. Either good habits or bad habits2. The underlined word “them” in the first paragraph refers to ________.A. bad habitsB. good habitsC. childrenD. other persons3. Generally speaking, it’s difficult for one________ and easy for them _________ which should be avoided.A. to form bad habits; to form good habitsB. to form good habits; to form bad habitsC. to form such habits as will be good; to get rid of bad habitsD. to get rid of bad habits; to form good habits4. Why should we pay much attention to the formation of habits?A. Because habits are of great help to every one of us.B. Because a man can never get rid of a habit.C. Because it’s hard and sometimes even impossible to throw away bad habits.D. Because we are forced to do them again and again.5. According to the passage, early rising ________.A. has something to do with successB. is an easily formed habitC. is such a habit as should have been avoidedD. is such a habit as will be kept。

Passage 1 〔目标有三种〕There are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals.目标有三种:短期目标,中期目标和长期目标。

Short-term goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, long-term goals cannot amount to very much without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon pleting our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been pleted.短期目标是根据每日制定的为了处理当前事物的目标。

短期目标可以以少于一个星期,一个星期,两个星期,或者可能的话一个月来完成。

大学英语A网络统考2014阅读理解真题2

阅读理解A21、During the meal, you'd better be careful not to leave a spoon in a soup bowl or coffee cup or any other dish. The coffee spoon ought to be on the saucer, the soup spoon ought to be on the plate under the bowl. When you are having soup, make the least noises and use the side of your spoon inside out this way, not the tip. And you mustn't pick up your soup bowls so as to drink away the last drops of your soup from the bottom of the bowl.Very often there is only one main course and salad, followed by your sweet. If you find the meal not enough, say "Oh, it's delicious!" and ask for some more of the chicken or steak or whatever you have just had. The hostess will be very glad that you appreciate her cooking and will give you an extra portion. But if you observe the Chinese way of being polite and say "No, thank you" when the hostess offers you more, you will most probably starve later, because Americans will never press food on you. Yet it is not polite to keep silent and not to talk with the person next to you. It would be considered good manners if you handle your silverware with care so that they don't make any noise. When coffee comes, drink it from your cup. The coffee spoon should rest on the saucer while you are drinking. And smoking, of course, is rarely seen at a dinner table. Well, when the meal is finished, the guests put their napkins on the table and stand up, the men again helping the ladies with their chairs. After the dinner, the guests usually stay for an hour or two, then they would say, "Well, I'm afraid I must be going now." The host and hostess would of course urge everyone to stay longer. "What, already? Won't you have another coffee?" The guests, for instance, would say, "I'd love to, but I have to be up early tomorrow morning. Thank you for a most enjoyable evening. Good-night."And if you stay overnight or over the weekend, it will be courteous to send a thank-you note to the host or hostess the following day, very often with a small gift such as a box of chocolate or some flowers as a token of appreciation of their hospitality.(1)、Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?A:How to Prepare for a Meal. He had seen many newlyweds coming into his store to shop for their first refrigerator, washer and dryer, and air-conditioner. Pen and pencil in hand, they would ask him a lot of questions about price, features and after-sale services, but they would usually walk away at the end of their inquiry. The other day a young couple came into his store. They asked him all the usual questions and he answered all of them patiently. But when he suggested an order at the end, they replied firmly, "We'll have to look around places first."Although feeling a bit disappointed, Mr. Stevenson did not show it. Instead, he smiled, moved closer and said, "I know you will go to Discount Dan to look at the price tags. That's perfectly understandable. I do the same. In fact, they sell the same stuff as we do. But if you buy things there, there is something you will not get. And that is me. I come with everything I sell. I've been in the business for thirty years and in a few years' time I'm going to give my store to my daughter and son-in-law. I hope they will carry on the family business. I stand behind everything I sell and I will make sure that you will never regret buying things from me."After this short speech Mr. Stevenson offered the young couple some ice cream to thank for their interest.Impressed by his honesty and sincerity, the young couple decided to place an order.(1)、What did Mr. Stevenson's store sell?A:Family furniture. I cannot tell you what the optimum is. It differs with the type of work, it differs from person to person, and even in the same person it varies from week to week. You must try to find your own. Every day you study, bear this principle of the optimum in mind. When you feel yourself getting fatigued, if you find yourself repeatedly reading over the same paragraph and not taking it in, that's a pretty good sign you've reached the crest(最高点)for the day and should stop. Most ordinary students find their optimum at about five hours a day. Yours may be a little more or a little less - but if you get in five hours' good work a day, you will be doing well. Now, what are you doing with yourself when you aren't working? Before examinations some students do nothing at all except sit in a chair and worry. This is a misunderstanding. People too easily think of the mind as if it worked like the body; it does not. If one wanted to conserve physical energy to cut the maximum amount of firewood, one would lie flat on a bed and rest when one wasn't chopping. But the mind cannot rest. Even in sleep you dream, even if you forget your dreams. The mind is always turning. It gets its relaxation only by variety. That is what makes mental rest. So when you've reached your optimum point you must stop. You must go out and do something. It doesn't matter what - anything so long as you are actively doing something else but work.(1)、For a student who wants to be an efficient learner, it's useful to ______.A:spend as much time as possible on study every day B:make good use of the spare timeC:get his study as near the optimum point as possible D:strike a balance between work and play 答案:C(2)、______ is a good sign that a students has reached the crest for the day.A:Having trouble sleeping B:Reading without absorbing the materialC:Getting tired of one's reading assignment D:Feeling unable to follow the teacher 答案:B(3)、People's misunderstanding about the mind is that ______.A:the mind works the same way as the body B:the mind doesn't need to have a restC:having a good rest will do harm to the mind D:a healthy body results from a healthy mind 答案:A(4)、The body is different from the mind because ______.A:it needs rest to regain energy B:performing different tasks can help the body regain energyC:it has the energy optimum point D:being tired will affect its performance 答案:A(5)、The best way to relax the mind after study is to ______.A:go to bed and have a good sleep B:go over the lesson one has learnedC:refer to the notebook again and again for better understanding D:try something different in an active way 答案:D4、Human needs seem endless. When a hungry man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat, when a manager gets a new sports car, a big house and pleasure boats dance into view. The many needs of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. When there is money enough to satisfy one level of needs, another level appears. The first and most basic level of needs involves food. Once this level is satisfied, the second level of needs, clothing and some sort of shelter, appears. By the end of World War II, these needs were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. Then a third level appeared. It included such items as automobiles and new houses.By 1957 or 1958 this third level of needs was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s, a fourth level of needs appeared: the"life-enriching" level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction, that is, the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation, this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement, and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called "luxury" items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical and dental care, and recreation. Also included here are fancy goods and the latest styles in clothing. On the fourth level, a lot of money is spent on services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of needs as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?A fifth level would probably involve needs that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime, and prejudice. After filling our stomachs, our clothes closets, our garages, our teeth, and our minds, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure to enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.(1)、According to the passage, man will begin to think about such needs as housing and clothing only when ______.A:he has grown dissatisfied with his simple shelter B:he has saved up enough moneyC:he has satisfied his hunger D:he has learned to build houses 答案:C(2)、It can be inferred from the passage that by the end of World War II, most Americans ______.A:lived in poverty B:were very rich C:had the good things on the first three levels D:did not own automobiles答案:D(3)、Which of the following is NOT related to "physical satisfaction"?A:A successful career. B:A comfortable home. C:A good meal. D:A family car. 答案:A(4)、What is the main concern of man on the fourth level?A:The more goods the better. B:The more "luxury" items the better.C:The more mental satisfaction the better. D:The more earnings the better.答案:C(5)、The author tends to think that the fifth level ______.A:would be little better than the fourth level B:may be a lot more desirable than the first fourC:can be the last level D:will become attainable before the government takes actions 答案:B5、Though some people have suggested that women should return to housework in order to leave more jobs for men, the idea has been rejected by both women and men in public opinion polls. Lately some union officials have suggested that too many women are employed in type of work more suitable for men and that women should step aside to make way for unemployed young men. They argue that women - especially women in their childbearing years actually delay economic development and result in lower productivity, poor quality and inefficiency. To solve the problem, they have suggested that the working women stay at home while their husbands or brothers were given double wages. They argue that under these circumstances, families would retain their same level of income, and women could run the house and raise children much better. The suggestion has been rejected by 9 out of 10 people polled. A hundred persons in a big city were questioned last summer. Out of 50 women, 46 said they were unwilling to leave their jobs, no matter what the situation was. The other 4 said they would like to return home if their jobs could be taken by their sons or daughters. Of 50 men polled, only 6 said they would like to see their wives give up their jobs, if it meant higher wages for themselves. Some other people have suggested another way called "phased employment theory". The theory suggests that a woman worker take leave from her job when she is seven months pregnant and stay off the job until her baby reaches the age of 3. It suggests that women on leave receive75 percent of their normal salary and be allowed to return to work after the 3-year period. This will benefit children, women, their families and the society. Some of those polled, both women and men, felt the idea is a good one. It definitely seems to be more acceptable than the suggestion that women return to home forever.(1)、Some union officials have suggested that women should return home because ______.A:all of them are employed in unsuitable types of work B:their participation in work has a bad influence on the economic developmentC:most skilled male workers are now unemployed D:nowadays no one can take care of children except women 答案:B (2)、Some union officials have suggested that if women resign their jobs, ______.A:they should be allowed to attend school to be trained B:their jobs should be taken over by the male members of their families C:the male employees in their families should receive double wages D:their children should also leave their kindergartens答案:C(3)、According to the passage, the suggestion that women should return to housework was ______.A:opposed by most men and women B:welcomed by men onlyC:welcomed by women only D:welcomed by men and women 答案:A(4)、According to the passage we can see "phased employment" means ______A:two or more women share the same job B:women stay at home on weekdays and go to work on weekends or holidaysC:a woman should resign her job forever if she has a child D:women are allowed to take leave from their jobs during their childbearing years 答案:D(5)、Based on the "phased employment" theory, during a woman's leave from her job ______.A:her work should be done by her husband or brothers B:her family's income level will be a little lower than it normally isC:her family can still keep the same level of income D:either her husband or her brothers will be given double wages答案:B6、Many studies have identified a strong link between suicide and diagnosable mental illness, especially depression. So, because women suffer from depression at a much higher rate than men, they would seem to be at higher risk for suicide. Yet, women actually commit suicide about one-fourth as often as men.George E. Murphy, professor of psychiatry at Washington university school of Medicine in St. Louis, says that females may be protected because of the way they think about problems and interact with others. "Women process their experience with friends. They discuss their feelings, seek feedback, and take advice. They are much more likely to tell a physician how they feel and cooperate in the prescribed treatment. As a result, women get better treatment for their depression."That treatment may help protect them from suicide, but Murphy suggests there is more to it. The approach to problem-solving is what often lands a woman in a psychiatrist's office in the first place, and that approach may be keeping female suicide rates lower.Murphy believes women are less inclined to commit suicide because their thinking is more inclusive. While a man might tend to throw aside seemingly peripheral(非本质的,边缘的)issues to get to the core of a problem, a woman might take more things into account. She may continue to seek input and process problems long after the point where men decide on a course of action. "She'll consider not just her feelings, but also the feelings of others - her family, the children, even acquaintances - and how these people willbe affected by a decision like suicide. A man is much less likely to take those things into account. He makes his decision, and it's about him, so he does not feel the need to share it with anyone else."(1)、What is the passage mainly about?A:The relationship between depression and suicide. B:Women's higher rate of depression than man.C:Reasons for women's lower risk of committing suicide. D:The treatment of mental illnesses such as depression.答案:C (2)、Females get better treatment for their depression perhaps because ______.A:they are more concerned about their health B:they have more experience in dealing with depressionC:they may discuss their feelings with a doctor and be cooperative D:they are more afraid of suicide 答案:C(3)、The word "inclusive" in paragraph 4 probably means ______.A:comprehensive B:liberal C:open-minded D:firm-minded 答案:A(4)、It is implied that a man can reduce his chance of committing suicide if he ______.A:goes straight to the core of a problem B:does not allow himself to be influenced by his acquaintancesC:consults a psychiatrist regularly D:changes the way he thinks about problems and interact with others 答案:D (5)、When a man suffers from depression, it is typical of him to ______.A:process his feelings and seek advice B:consider just his feelings when he makes a decisionC:throw aside obviously important issues D:act in a hostile manner towards a psychiatrist. 答案:B7、In the same way that a child must be able to move his arms and legs before he can learn to walk, the child must physiologically be capable of producing and experiencing particular emotions before these emotions can be modified through learning. Psychologists have found that there are two basic processes by which learning takes place. One kind of learning is called "classical conditioning". This occurs when one event or stimulus is consistently paired with, or followed by, a reward or punishment. It is through classical conditioning that a child learns to associate his mother's face and voice with happiness and love, for he learns that this person provides food and comfort. Negative emotions are learned in a similar fashion. The second kind of learning is called "operant conditioning". An individual learns to do things that produce rewards in his environment and learns not to do things that produce punishments. For example, if a mother always attends to her baby when he cries and cuddles him until he is quiet, she may teach him that if he cries he will get attention from mother. Thus, the baby will learn to increase his crying in order to have his mother more. Every day, we grow and have new experiences. We constantly learn by reading, watching television, interacting with other people and so forth. This learning affects our emotions. Why is it that we learn to like some people and dislike others? If a person is nice to us, cares about us, we learn to associate this person with positive feelings, such as joy, happiness, and friendliness. On the other hand, if a person is mean to us, does not care about us, and even deliberately does things to harm us, we learn to associate this person with negative feelings, such as unhappiness, discomfort, and anger.(1)、The author's main purpose in writing the passage is to ______.A:give parents some advice on how to bring up children B:debate with psychologists on people's positive and negative feelings C:teach children how to learn to produce and experience certain emotionsD:inform the general reader of two basic processes of modifying emotions through learning 答案:D(2)、In classical conditioning, a child learns to ______.A:associate one event with a reward or punishment B:do things that produce rewardsC:receive a reward when he feel happy D:recognize his mother's face and voice 答案:A(3)、Which of the following is a case of "operant conditioning"?A:Children learn to do things that produce punishment. B:The baby feels happy when he sees his mother's face.C:Children learn to mix with others by reading, watching TV and so forth.D:The baby increases his crying because his mother attends to him whenever he cries. 答案:D(4)、The underlined word "fashion" can be replaced by "______".A:vogue B:route C:manner D:fate 答案:C(5)、According to the passage, positive feelings include ______.A:care, association, and nice person B:joy, happiness, and friendlinessC:comfort, cares, and anger D:reading, watching TV, and interacting with others 答案:B8、Many countries face a somewhat more serious economic problem in the form of an unfavorable trade balance with other nations. Such an imbalance exists when the total value of a country's imports exceeds that of its exports. For example, if a country buys $25 billion of products from other countries, yet sells only $10 billion of its own products overseas, its trade deficit(贸易逆差)is $15 billion. Many underdeveloped nations find themselves in this position because they lack natural resources or the industrial capacity to use these resources, and thus have to import raw materials or manufactured goods. One effect of a trade deficit is the flow of currency out of a country. In the case of an underdeveloped nation, this can cause many financial difficulties, including failure to meet debt payments and obstacles to creation of an industrial base. Even in the case of a fully developed nation such as the United States, a large trade deficit is a reason for alarm. American products, made by well-paid workers in U.S. industries, cost more to produce than those made in places like Asia, where labor and material costs are much lower. Money spent on foreign products is money not spent on items produced by domestic industries.(1)、What does the passage mainly discuss?A:Some worldwide economic problems. B:The cause and consequences of trade deficit.C:Lack of resources in underdeveloped countries. D:High labor and material costs in developed countries. 答案:B(2)、According to the passage, a trade imbalance occurs when ______.A:a country is facing serious financial problems B:a country buys more from other countries than it sells overseasC:the value of a country's exports is greater than that of its imports D:products imported are more expensive than those exported 答案:B(3)、Many underdeveloped countries have trade deficits because ______.A:they failed to meet debt payments B:they export most of their natural resources to other countriesC:they borrow too much money from other countries D:they have to import most of their manufactured products答案:D (4)、Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a possible cause of a trade imbalance?A:The flow of currency of the country. B:Low labor and material costs in Asian countries.C:Lack of natural resources. D:Lack of the industrial capacity to use the resources. 答案:A(5)、It can be inferred from this passage that American industries ______.A:do not pay their workers sufficiently B:are hurt by a trade imbalanceC:imported labor and material from abroad D:are able to prevent a trade deficit 答案:B9、The judgment of the Englishman by all other European peoples is that he is the most suspicious, the most reserved, the most unfriendly, the coldest-hearted of all western peoples.Ask a Frenchman, an Italian, a German, a Spaniard, even an American, what he thinks about Englishmen; and every one of them will tell you the very same thing. This is precisely what the character of men would become who had lived for thousands of years in the conditions of northern European land. But, on the other hand, you would find that all nations would speak highly of certain other English qualities - energy, courage, honour, justice. They would say that, although no man is so difficult to make friends with, the friendship of an Englishman once gained is stronger and truer than any other. And as the battle of life still continues, and must continue for thousands of years to come, it must be acknowledged that the English character is especially well suitable for the struggle. Its reserves, its cautions, its doubts, its suspicions - these have been for it in the past, and are still in the present. It is not a lovable nor amiable character; it is not even kindly. The Englishman of the best type is much more inclined(倾向于)to justice than he is to be kind, for kindness is an emotional impulse, and the Englishman doesn't like every kind of emotional impulse. But with all this, the character is a great one, and its success has been the best proof of its value.(1)、The Englishman is characterized as ______.A:suspicious and open-minded B:reserved and friendly C:suspicious and warm-hearted D:cold-hearted and unfriendly 答案:D(2)、According to the author, the main factor which has shaped the English character is a ______ one.A:geographical B:economical C:psychological D:political 答案:A(3)、Certain other English qualities such as courage, energy, and honor are ______.A:ignored by Europeans B:praised by Europeans C:ignored by themselves D:praised by themselves答案:B (4)、It seems that it is most difficult to ______ an Englishman.A:speak highly of B:take care of C:make friends with D:fight against 答案:C(5)、The Englishman prefers ______ to ______.A:being on guard, emotional impulse B:justice, kindness C:value, success D:being true, friendship 答案:B 18、During Paleolithic(旧石器)times man became man by learning to speak, to make tools and to use fire. This gave him an enormous advantage over other animals about him. Yet in one fundamental respect he remained alike to them. He was still a hunter among other hunters. He was still a food gatherer as were countless other species that were completely dependent on the bounty (恩赐)of nature. And being dependent on the nature, he was dominated by nature. He had to be constantly on the move in order to follow animals and to locate fishing grounds. He had to live in small groups because not many could find enough food to support themselves in a given area if he lived alone. It is estimated that even in fertile areas with a mild winter, only one or two food collectors could support themselves per square mile. And twenty or even thirty square miles were needed for each human soul in regions of cold climate, tropical jungle or desert.Such dependence on nature left its mark on all aspects of human society. But this dependence was greatly reduced when man made the epochal(纪元的)discovery that he could feed himself by growing his food as well as by gathering it. In doing so a new world witha bright future opened before him, as he left behind him the Paleolithic stage of his development and entered the Neolithic(新石器)(1)、Which of the following is not the advantage of man in Paleolithic times?A:Learning to speaking B:Making tools C:Using fire D:Being hunters 答案:D(2)、A man who lived alone in Paleolithic times .A:could gather enough food for himself B:could support himself quite easilyC:would hardly survive the hard natural conditions D:needn't move a lot for food 答案:C。

Either way, it could be the perfect crime (犯罪), because the criminals are birds-horning pigeons! The crime begins with a telephone message to the owner of a stolen car: if you want the car back, pay up then. The car owner is directed to a park, told where to find a bird cage and how to attach money to the neck of the pigeon inside. Carrying the money in a tiny bag, the pigeon flies off. There have been at least four such pigeon pick-ups in Changwa. What at first seemed like the work of a clever stay-at-home car thief, however, may in fact be the work of an even lazier and more inventive criminal mind-one that avoids (避免)not only collecting money but going out to steal the car in the first place. Police officer Chen says that the criminal probably has played a double trick: he gets money for things he cannot possibly return. Instead of stealing cars, he lets someone else do it and then waits for the car-owner to place an ad (启事) in the newspaper asking for help. The theory is supported by the fact that, so far, none of the stolen cars have been returned. Also, the amount of money demanded-under 3,000 Taiwanese dollars-seems too little for a car worth many times more.Demands for pigeon-delivered money stopped as soon as the press reported the story. And even if they start again, Chen holds lit tle hope of catching the criminal. “We have more important things to do,” he said.26. After the car owner received a phone call, he .A. went to a certain pigeon and put some money in the bag it carriedB. gave the money to the thief and had his car back in a parkC. sent some money to the thief by mailD. told the press about it27. The “lazier and more inventive” criminal refers to .A. the car thief who stays at homeB. one of those who put the ads in the paperC. one of the policemen in ChangwaD. the owner of the pigeons28. The writer mentions the fact that “none of the stolen cars have been returned” to show .A. how easily people get fooled by criminalsB. what Chen thinks might be correctC. the thief is extremely cleverD. the money paid is too little29. The underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refers to .A. criminalsB. pigeonsC. the stolen carsD. demands for money30. We may infer from the text that the criminal knows how to reach the car owners because .A. he reads the ads in the newspaperB. he lives in the same neighborhoodC. he has seen the car owners in the parkD. he has trained the pigeons to follow them答案:26. 广东省成人高等教育学士学位英语统考真题及精解Part II Reading Comprehension (40 points)Directions : There are 4 passages it this part. Each passage is followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and marlo your answer on the ANSWER SHEET.Passage TwoWhat you've always heard? We're eating way too much salt. The average American gets about 3.4 grams of sodium every day, far more than the upper limit of 2. 3 grams recommended by the USDA. The Institute of Medicine estimates that reducing sodium intake (摄取量) nationwide could prevent 100,000 deaths every year. The headlines now? It's time to get tough. The New York City health department recently kicked off a national effort to cut the amount of salt in packaged and restaurant food by 25% over five years. 80% of the salt in the average person's diet comes from those sources, not from the sahshaker (盐瓶).But wait! The benefits of salt reduction are surprisingly mruky. At least 13 studies have tried to find out what happensto people who choose to eat salty or not-so-salty food--and the results have pointed in eve~3~ direction. Sonre studies suggest that cutting salt protects the heart; others suggest that intense salt reduction can actually increase heart problems. What's needed , Dr. Michael Alderman says, is a randomized (随机的) , controlled trial, in which people are put on different diets and followed for years. It's the only way to get a reliable answer, but it's never been done.So what should you do? Go easy on processed foods and eat more produce. Those changes will improve your diet in a variety of ways and cut the amount of sodium you consume. If your blood pressure is high, work with your doctor to control it with drugs and lifestyle changes. If your blood pressure is healthy? At this point, there's no convincing reason for you to count every grain.21. It is stated in Paragraph 1 that our sodium intake[A] is within the healthy range[B] is a bit over the upper limit[C] is far beyond what is necessary[D] is well below the lower limit22. The main sources of salt in our diet are[A] home-made food and packaged food[B] restaurant food and saltshakers[C] home-made food and saltshakers[D] restaurant food and packaged food23. What does the word "murky' (Para. 3) probably mean?[A] Unclear. [B] Significant.[C] Obvious. [D] Exaggerated.24. What does Dr. Michael Alderman say about a randonfized, controlled trial?[A] It has been successfully conducted.[B] It should be carded out.[C] It is already under way.[D] It is too late to try it.25. As stated in the last paragraph, people with normal blood pressure[A] should consider a change of their lifestyle[B] have every reason to be careful about sodium[C] will not be affected by the amount of sodium taken[D] do not have to take sodium too seriouslyPassage ThreeThere is a tale that straw is the worst material from which to build a house, particularly if you are a pig with a hungry wolf around. So the cards were stacked against Warren Brush whenlocal officials learned that he had several buildings made of straw bales ( 大捆) on his land. They have tried to fine him a lot. But the case is still unresolved. The problem is that California's building codes make no provision for the use of straw. And Mr Brush has many defenders--among them several university scientists and David Eisenberg, the chairman of the United States Green Building Council's code connnittee. They would like to see the prejudice against straw houses eliminated, for straw is, in many ways, an ideal building material. It is, for one thing, a great insulator (绝缘体). That keeps down the heating bills in houses made from it. It is also a waste product that would otherwise be burned, and is therefore cheap, and very much to the point in a place like California, it is earthquake-resistant. Last year a test conducted at the University of Nevada showed that straw-bale constructions could' withstand twice the amount of ground motion recorded in the Northridge earthquake that hit LosAngeles in 1994.There are other straws in the wind: a post office in suburban Albuquerque, a school in Maryland, and an office complex in suburban Los Angeles have all been built fromstraw. Even California is having a rethink, and may change its rules to adapt to straw-bale construction. As Mr Eisenberg observes, "the lesson of the Three Little Pigs isn't to avoid straw. It's that you don't let a pig build your house."26. By "the cards were stacked against Warren Brush, the author means that Brash[A] received punishment [B] made a breakthrough[c] would be in trouble [D] might win a prize27. David Eisenberg is mentioned[A] as a representative of official opinions[B] for the purpose of supporting Warren Brush[C] to provide evidence against straw houses[D] to show the importance of the building codes28. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?[A] The structure of straw houses.[B] The possibility of building straw houses.[C] The suggestions for building straw houses.[D] The advantages of straw houses.29. It can be learned from the last paragraph that California[Al will fine Warren Brush as planned[B] will reduce the fine on Warren Brush[C] may consider a heavier fine on Warren Brush[D] may not fine Warren Brash30. The author's purpose in writing the passage is to[A] show that straw can be used to build houses[B] highlight the prejudice against straw houses[C] explain how to build a house with straw[D] introduce a new building materialPassage FourI was talking with a senior Public Relations manager the other day about "The Game Trainers" and he expressed much doubt about both the possibility and value of getting senior professionals to play games. These are serious people with serious jobs, and they are not going to waste time running around like school children,' he told me. This statement highlighted many of his assumptions. He also provided me with a golden opportunity to talk about how these "serious people with serious jobs" could actually learn something about themselves, their staff, their company, and their business opportunities by allowing creativity to flow more freely through "games".His position is not uncommon and it comes from a deep seated misunderstanding of what a "game" is and what it is for,as well as a set notion of what "work" nmst look like for it to be considered of value. It's not a coincidence (巧合) that the most successful companies of the last decade, including Apple and Google, were all started by college students, and perhaps as a consequence have at their core a spirit of fun, creativity and innovation. Their success has not been achieved through a strict work environment, dull meetings and a 9 to 5 work time. Instead they have flowing and flexible work spaces, a culture of cooperation, opportunities for creativity and relaxed work structures. The Game Trainers support this innovative and highly productive approach to work by developing games to integrate into the working environment, And so, I said to the PR man, it's a good thing that they are "serious people with serious jobs", because we also are extremely serious about play, and in today's environment they simply cannot afford not to play games.31. What does the PR man ager think of the author’s proposal of playing games?[Al It is against the rule. [B] It makes no sense.[C] It is worth a try. [D] It would be beneficial.32. The author suggests that the PR manager’sposition on games[A] represents a common misunderstanding[B] allows for greater work efficiency[C] is based on scientifically proven concepts[D] is hard to understand in today's world?33. The examples of Apple and Google show that[A] it helps to combine work with games[B] games should be separated from work[C] work and games can be clearly defined[D] no work can be done well without games34. "The Game Trainers" is probably a[A] computer game [B] search engine[C] game developer [D] research system35. In the passage the author[A] encourages people to work more creatively[B] describes how to balance work with life[C] analyzes why it is important to enjoy work[D] promotes an innovative approach to work广东省成人高等教育学士学位英语统考真题及精解Passage TwoWhat you've always heard? Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is “no”. It is not the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that makes him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further, he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his questions and that his answer can be confirmed by other persons. He also works to fit the answers he gets to many questions into a large set of ideas about how the world works. The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason that investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the Theory of Relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy of his mathematics was later tested through investigations, and Einstein’s ideas were shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.11.What makes a scientist according to the passage? ________A.The tools he uses.B.The way he uses his tools.C.His ways of learning.D.The various tools he uses.答案:B12.The underlined part in the passage shows_______.A.the importance of informationB.the importance of thinkingC.the difference between scientists and ordinary peopleD.the difference between carpenters and people with other jobs答案:C13.A sound scientific theory should be one that _________.A.works not only under one set of conditions at one time, but also under the same conditions at other timesB.does not allow any changes even under different conditionsC.can be used for many purposesD.leaves no room for improvement答案:A14.The author quotes the case of Albert Einstein to illustrate __________.A.that measurements are keys to success in scienceB.that accuracy of mathematicsC.that investigations are important in scienceD.that the mathematical calculations may test his investigations答案:C15.What is the main idea of the passage? ________A.The theory of relativity.B.Exactness is the core of science.C.Scientists are different from ordinary people.D.Exactness and ways of using tools are the keys to the making of a scientist.答案:D三、美国尊重体力工作者A characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect the self-made man – the man who has risen to the top through his own efforts, usually beginning by working with his hands. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the common laborer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or laborer of some sort. This attitude toward manual (体力的) labor is now still seen in many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is not only comfortably but even luxuriously (豪华地) furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact that the family has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children; yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterward; furthermore, the dinner will not consist merely of something quickly and easily assembled from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the nearby bakery. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it’s a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one’s own. Then, in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one’s free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one o f the parks and a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.11.Which of the following statements is NOT true?_________A.People who love Nature prefer to live outside the city.B.People who work in London prefer to live in the country.C.Some people enjoying city life prefer to work and live inside London.D.Many nature lovers, though working in London, prefer to live outside the city.答案:B12.With the same money ________, one can buy a little house with a garden in the country.A.getting a small flat with a gardenB.having a small flat with a gardenC.renting a small flat without a gardenD.buying a small flat without a garden答案:C13.When the garden is in blossom, it means that one ________ has been rewarded.A.living in the countryB.having spent time working in the gardenC.having a garden of his ownD.having been digging, planting and watering答案:B14.People who think happiness lies in the town would feel that _______ if they had to live outside London.A.their life was meaninglessB.their life was invaluableC.they didn’t deserve a happy lifeD.they were not worthy of their happy life答案:A15.The underlined phrase get away from in the 3rd paragraph refers to ________.A.deal withB.do away withC.escape fromD.prevent from答案:C十、害羞的人Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in theirminds: what kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes? It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must negatively affect people. A person’s conception of himself or herself is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing “the right thing.” Shy people are very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms their feelings of inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliment with a statement like this one, “You’re just saying that to make me feel good. I know it’s not true.” It is clear that while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient efforts in building self-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in hand with a lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths. Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual, interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full potential. Let’s not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.11.What does the author try to prove by citing “what kind of impression am I making?” (Para. 1)__________A.Shy people benefit from their caring about their appearance.B.People’s shyness make them care too much about their appearance and actions.C.It’s natural that shy people don’t believe other’s compliments.D.Shy people think they are different from others.答案:B12.According to the writer, self-awareness is __________.A.a good qualityB.the cause of unhappinessC.harmful to peopleD.a weak point of shy people答案:A13.That shy people react to a compliment in such a way is ___________.A.goodB.unrealC.very reasonableD.harmful答案:D14.Which of the following statements is true, according to the passage? _________A.Shyness helps us to develop our potentialB.Shyness enables us to understand ourselves betterC.Shyness can block our chances for a rich lifeD.Shyness has nothing to do with lack of self-esteem答案:C15.It can be inferred from the passage that shy people ________.A.should find more of their weaknessB.should understand themselves in the right wayC.had better ignore their weaknessD.can get rid of their shyness while maintaining low self-esteem答案:B十一、不认字买眼镜Mr. Tom Forester lived by himself a long way from town. Eye-catching signs crowded the island’s attractions, showing off circus shows, sword swallowers—and even an exhibition of tiny babies. The babies were premature ones kept alive in incubators (婴儿保育箱) pioneered by Dr. Martin Couney. The medical establishment had reject ed his incubators, but Dr. Couney didn’t give up on his aims. Starting in 1896, he funded his work by displaying the babies and charging 25 cents to see the show. In return, parents didn’t have to pay for Dr. Couney’s incubators, and many children survived who would never have had a chance otherwise.Born in 12, Lucille Horn ended up in an incubator on Coney Island. She’d been born a twin, but her twin died at birth. And the hospital staff told her father that there wasn’t a chance she’d live. “It was just: You die because you didn’t belong in the world,” Horn says. But her father refused to accept that answer. He grabbed a blanket to wrap her in, called a taxi, and took her to Coney Island—and to Dr. Couney’s infant (婴幼儿) exhibit.Years later, Horn decided to return to see the babies—this time as a visitor. When she took the opportunity to introduce herself, Dr. Couney went over to a man who was uneasily looking at his small infant. “Look at this young lady,” Dr. Couney told the man. “She’s one of our babies. And that’s how your baby’s gonna grow up.”Horn was just one of thousands of premature infants that Dr. Couney cared for and displayed at amusementparks until the 194s. He died in 1950, shortly after incubators like his were introduced in most hospitals. At the time, Dr. Couney’s efforts were largely unknown—but at least one person will never forget him. “Ninety-six years later, here I am, all in one piece. 2023大学英语统考阅读理解及答案题型——阅读理解Basketball is perhaps the only sport whose exact origin can safely be stated. During the winter of 1891—1892, Dr. James Naismith, a college instructor in Springfield, Massachusetts, invented the game of basketball in order to provide exercise for the football season and the opening of the baseball season. He attached fruit baskets overhead on the wall at opposite ends of the gymnasium. He organized nine-man teams to play his new game, using a soccer ball. What the players did was to throw the ball into one basket and keep the other team from tossing the ball into the opposite basket. There have since been many changes in the rules. For example, the number of players on a team has been reduced to 5. But the game is basically the same today. Americans introduced it to the Philippines in 1900 and to Europe during World War I.

Before 1970, few laws protected the environment. Then on April 22 that year, Earth Day was created to celebrate our planet, tell people about environmental problems, and encourage them to take action. Now Earth Day is celebrated all around the world. We still face many challenges, such as climate(气候)change, plastic pollution, and deforestation(毁林). But we can make a difference. Here is an Earth-helping hero.Adeline Tiffanie Suwana was twelve when her family’s home flooded. Indonesia, her island nation in South-east Asia, is often hit hard by floods and other natural disasters.Adeline wanted to help. Studying the problem, she learned that mangrove trees play an important role in flood protection. Their big, tangled(缠结的)roots slow floodwaters and keep soil from washing away. But the trees were being cut down.Adeline gathered her classmates to plant 200 mangrove young trees during a school break. They started a group called Friends of Nature, which works to keep the area’s biodiversity(生物多样性), fight against climate change, and help people realize the importance of the environment. They even started a project to get clean energy to remote villages.Today, Adeline attends college, studying how businesses can help the environment.Remember: every one of us can be a hero for the environment!注:每题答案不超过5个词。

Many martial arts were invented because people needed to defend themselves or protect others. Nowadays, people learn martial arts as a way of keeping fit or as a competitive sport, but they are still very useful for selfdefense.Martial arts are often referred to as either the soft ones or the hard ones. These terms imply a way of dealing with your opponent's force. Soft martial arts, such as tai chi, teach you to use your opponent's force to defend yourself. Soft styles allow you to use flowing movements and timing to avoid your opponent's attacks. These martial arts are soft for the defender but not for the attacker! On the other hand, hard styles such as kung fu, teach you to defend yourself using force.Techniques involve blocking, posturing, powerful hitting and kicking. Hard martial arts techniques are more effective if you are more skillful, more powerful and faster than your opponent.Perhaps one of the best known Japanese martial arts today is karate. But did you know that its roots are derived from Fujian Province? In the 4th century, a community of Chinese migrants from Fujian settled in what was then the kingdom of Okinawa. The Chinese migrants used to gather in a park to enjoy cultural activities—one of which was kung fu. This soon caught the attention of local youths, who started learning kung fu from their Chinese neighbours. In fact, Chinese influence in martial arts was not limited to kung fu. The very first Korean military training guidebook was based on a Chinese version. During the Japanese invasion of Korea in the 16th century, the Korean army needed an effective way to train a large number of troops. They adopted a training methodology (方法) from a Chinese military book called Ji Xiao Xin Shu, written by the famous Chinese general Qi Jiguang.4.Why did people invent martial arts?A.For keeping fit.B.For selfdefense.C.For competition.D.For attacking others.5.Which is the character of soft martial arts?A.Using violence to attack others.B.Attacking your opponent's weakness.C.Using smooth action to defend yourself from damage.D.Defending yourself with powerful hitting and kicking.6.Who spread karate?A.The Chinese army.B.The Korean military.C.Japanese troops.D.Chinese migrants.7.Why did the Korean army adopt a training methodology from Ji Xiao Xin Shu?A.To train soldiers.B.To keep soldiers fit.C.To attend cultural activities.D.To show admiration for Qi Jiguang.C[2022·云南省第一次高三检测]Italy's cheap old homes continue to appeal to hundreds of interested buyers, among whom was Roy Patrick, a British who deals in antiques in Italy. Patrick bought an old schoolhouse in the mountain village of Carrega Ligure for $16,500. It's both an adventure and a joy.Patrick bought the property quite by accident. When told about the wonders of the village, he toured there to take a look and was instantly struck by the 1930s school building. “The house is very special and the view is unique—the way the sun goes down over the mountains, you'd say‘wow'. It's a fantastic wonderland,” says Patrick. The property was offloaded by the local government to boost the populations of communities in decline. Since the purchase, he's been visiting every two weeks and finds it has many charms. “Top of the list is the friendliness of the local residents, followed by the breathtaking views I get out of the windows looking across the valley,” he adds.Patrick's initial encounter with his new home was less than promising. He had to climb through a window to open up the building, which had been shut for decades and whose door was jammed, with the keys nowhere to be found. However, a later structural disaster turned into a positive story. When an unstable chimney collapsed due to a heavy snow, a neighbor volunteered to climb onto his roof to make it safe. The locals are so welcoming that they are ready to help newcomers.During the restoration needed to make the old school habitable, Patrick unexpectedly unearthed a great many treasures: dusty piles of old textbooks, inkwells, pupil registers and other historical items.Patrick has some advice for those with the thought of buying a house in Carrega Ligure: There is absolutely nothing, just great views, pure air and clean surroundings. There are no bars, supermarkets, or restaurants. A vehicle is essential to move around. However, Carrega Ligure does spring to life in the summer when vacationers arrive to relax. “There are nights when people throw a party with loud music,” says Patrick.“Otherwise it's just singing birds and total silence.”8.What led to Patrick's purchase of the old schoolhouse?A.The locals' friendly attitude.B.Its location and rising value.C.Its uniqueness and surroundings.D.The government's housing welfare.9.What was the government's intention of selling the property?A.To attract more settlers.B.To boost local tourism.C.To preserve village traditions.D.To reform the education system.10.What's one of Patrick's added bonuses of getting the house?A.Acquiring more personal space.B.Digging up some historical finds.C.Enjoying a more active social life.D.Getting free home decoration service.11.How does it feel most of the time living in Carrega Ligure?A.Quiet. 统考大学英语B阅读理解专项练习(2010年12月补充)1、The dark smoke that comes out of stacks(大烟囱) or from a burning dump(垃圾) contains tiny bits of solid or liquid matter. The smoke also contains many gases, most of which cannot be seen. Altogether, they make up the serious problems of air pollution. In so many places it keeps us from seeing the sun, irritate(刺痛) our eyes, causes us to cough and makes us ill.Air pollution can spread from city to city. It even spreads from one country to another. Some northern European countries have had "black snow" from pollutants that have traveled through the air from other countries and have fallen with the snow. So air pollution is a global problem. It can kill babies, older people and those who have respiratory(呼吸) disease. In 1952, four thousands people die in one week as a result of a serious air pollution breakout in London. In 1948 in a small town of Pennsylvania, 20 people died in a four - day period of air pollution. As often found in cities, air pollution increases the risks of lung disease, such as bronchitis and asthma. Of course, smoking and other factors help to cause these illnesses, too, but these causes have increased greatly during recent years as air pollution has become worse.(1)、Which of the following is NOT true about the "black snow" incident?A:It happened in the northern European countries.B:It happened there because air pollution in these countries was most serious. The sun pours more energy on earth than we can ever use. Most of that energy comes to us as heat and light. Energy from the sun is called solar energy.Anything to do with the sun is called "solar". The word began with the Roman word for the sun and their god of the sun, who was called Sol. Solar energy is a safe kind of energy. It doesn't make pollution or have dangerous leftovers. That is why scientists and investors are experimenting with ways of harnessing(治理利用)the sun to do some of the jobs fossil fuels have been doing. But to make the sun do work like that, they have to solve some problems. They have to collect the sun's energy. Collecting sunshine is not easy, unless you are a plant. Sunshine is not easy to store, either. You can't fill a tank with it or put it in the wood box. You can not move it through a pipe or a wire. You can not just turn it on.(1)、What form does most of solar energy take to reach us?A:Light.B:Heat.C:gas.D:both A and B.答案:D(2)、Where does the word "solar" come from?A:Greek.B:Roman.C:Old English.D:Chinese.答案:B(3)、Which of the following is NOT true of solar energy?A:It is a safe energy.B:It is a green energy.C:It may cause pollution to the air.D:It is endless.答案:C(4)、What are the problems facing scientists who want to use solar energy?A:It is not easy to collect.B:It is not easy to store.C:It is not easy to find out.D:both A and B.答案:D(5)、What is the writer's purpose of writing the passage?A:To give a brief introduction to solar energy.B:To explain the reason why it is not easy to make solar energy.C:To give information about the advantages of solar energy.D:To give a brief introduction to the word "solar".答案:A3、The ideal teacher may be young or old, tall or short, fat or thin. Even now it is still not quite respectable for a woman to go into a pub alone; she must have a man to escort(护卫) and protect her. Perhaps that is partly why pubs depress me - they are intended mainly to provide for male interests, which are often pretty narrow. I think this male-dominated atmosphere also reminds me of my life back at school, or in the army, neither of which is an experience I much want to relive. However, I'm obviously in the minority. Most Englishmen have their local pubs, where they can escape from the pressures of family life or work, and if they are lucky, tell their troubles to a pretty barmaid. Indeed, many men dream of retiring from their 9 - 5 jobs and buying a little country pub, where they imagine they'll be the host of a seven-night-a-week party. This dream usually dies when cleaning up spilled beer at one o'clock in the morning.Still, there's pub for every type of man, from the city sophisticate to the rural primitive, and a man for every type of pub. When you are near a lake or an ocean, you feel cool. Why? The sun makes the earth hot, but it cannot make the weather very hot. Although the air over the earth becomes hot, the air over the water stays cool. The hot air over the earth rises. Then the cool air over the water moves in and takes the place of the hot air. When you are near a lake or an ocean, you feel the cool air when it moves in. You feel the wind, and the wind makes you feel cool.Of course, scientists cannot answer all of our questions. If we ask, "Why is the ocean full of salt?" scientists will say that the salt comes from rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cold, it cracks. Rain falls into the cracks. The rain then carries the salt into the earth and into the rivers. The rivers carry the salt into the ocean. But then we ask, "What happens to the salt in the ocean? The ocean does not get more salty every year." Scientists are not sure about the answer to this question. We know a lot about our world. But there are still many answers that we do nothave, and we are curious.(1)、The main idea of the passage is ______.A:people feel cool when they are near a lake or an oceanB:scientists can explain everything we want to knowC:scientists can explain many things except one thingD:the salt in the ocean comes from rocks答案:A(2)、You feel cool when you are near a lake or an ocean because ______.A:the water is not so hot as the earthB:the earth is hotC:the water is colder than the earthD:cool air from the water moves towards the land答案:D(3)、Now scientists know ______.A:what makes people feel cool near a lake or an ocean in summerB:everything about the oceanC:why the ocean does not get more and more saltyD:what happens to the salt in the ocean答案:A(4)、A rock cracks when ______.A:rain fallsB:it gets very hotC:it gets very coldD:either B or C答案:D(5)、People are always curious about the world around them because ______.A:they know nothing about itB:they know little about itC:there are answers they do not haveD:there are a lot of interesting stories about it答案:C10、A million tourists go to Barcelona every year.
