一、阅读理解

1.Everyone must go to bed early and get up early, or we won’t be healthy and clever.

Is this true? Perhaps it is. The body must have enough sleep. The students aged 8—18 need ten hours’ sleep every day. If you don^ go to bed early, you won’t have enough sleep. Then you can’t think properly and do your work properly. You’ll not be clever.

Some people go to bed late and get up late. This is not good for them. We must sleep at night when it is dark. The dark helps us to sleep soundly. When the daytime comes, we must get up. This is the time for exercise. If you lack exercise, the body will become weak. Exercise keeps a strong body.

Exercise helps the blood (血液)flow(流动)around inside the body. This is very important. Blood takes food to all parts of our bodies. The brain also needs blood. We think with our brains. If we keep our body healthy and take exercise, we can think better.

2.What’s the most impor tant thing for you to have in your life? Somebody mentions hard-work, others suggest knowledge, love and luck.

If you arrange(排列) the 26 English letters in order(顺序) and use numbers to represent each of them, for example, 1 for a, 2 for b, 3 for c…26 for z, you can change an English word into a

number. So hard-work becomes 8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11=98, meaning 98 is its mark(分数). Knowledge: 11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5=96, love:12+15+22+5=54, and luck: 12+21+3+11=47, a small mark. None of these words can give one a fu ll mark. What about money? It can’t , either. Then what else? Don’t be worried. You can always find an answer to a problem in your life, when you change your way of looking at things or doing things, or your attitude(态度). Yes, attitude is the word. See for yourself: attitude:1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5=100,a full mark.

Different attitudes lead to(导致) different courses of life. Most time people hope for a better life. It is possible that they will have a better life if they change their attitudes. When you change yo ur manner and became friendly towards others, you’ll meet more smiling faces towards you. In the same way, if you take a positive(积极的) attitude towards failure(失败), you’ll find it’s also rewarding(有益的)though it has caused you losses(损失).

3.Mr. and Mrs. Smith had always spent their summer holiday in New Jersey in the past, staying in a small inn at the foot of a hill.

One year, however, Mr. Smith made a lot of money in his business, so they decided to go to London and stay at a really good hotel while they went touring around the famous city.

They flew to London and arrived at their hotel late one evening. They had expected that they would have to go to bed hungry, because in that small inn in New Jersey, no meals were served after seven. They were surprised when the waiter asked whether they would take dinner there that night. “ Are you still serving dinner?” asked Mr. Smith. “Yes, certainly, sir,” answered the waiter. “We serve it until half past nine.”

“What are the times of meals then?” asked Mr. Smith. “Well, sir,” answered the waiter, “we serve breakfast from seven to half past eleven in the morning, lunch from twelve to three in the afternoon, tea from four to five, and dinner fro m six to half past nine.”
