M: okay, could u give them to Mike Andrews? I think he is in your psychology class. he is my roommate.W: sure. i hope you're feeling better soon.M: thanks. me too. bye!W: bye!35 what is the converstation mainly about?36 why is the woman giving the man the information?37 what effect will the increased use of DME instead of diesel fuel probably have?38 according to the conversation, why won't DME be on the market soon?39 why does the woman suggest the man look at her notes?Questions 40 through 43:Okay. Uh...you remember that ive mention that it's important to read the assigned poems aloud,so you can develop and appreciation of the sounds of the poetry: the rhymes, the rhythm, the repetition of words or sounds, and to get a sense of the interplay between the sounds of the words and theirmeaning. this is really critical as we move into modern poetry, especially by writers who place so much importance on sounds that the meaning becomes all letter relevant. like this line by Gertrude Stein that I'd like to quote. listen, listen as i say the words. "rose is a rose is a rose is a rose." taken literally this would seems to be an empty statement, onewhich gives us no information. but the purpose of a poem need not be to inform the reader of anything, but rather to evoke feelings. to create a sensual as well as phonically pleasing experience. now Gertrude Stein was better known for her prose than for her poems. but i'd like to like to quote this line because of its musicality, and because i think it helps open up our awareness to the unconventionally ricism of contemporary poets. you'll see this in your homework tongiht as you read the poetry of John Ashbery, especially if you read it out loud, which i recommend you do. poets like ashbery don't rely so much on any formal rhyme scheme or meter as on the musical quality of the individual words themselves. as i said,Stein was better known for her non-poetical work. and now i'd like to touch briefly on her essay entitled "Converstaion and Explanation". this work deals with her theory of writing and will help to explain some of the things we've talking about.40 what does the professor mainly discuss?41 what does the professor say about Gertrude Stein as a writer?42 why does the professor recommend the students do as part of their homework?43 what does the professor recommend the students do as part of their homework?Questions 44 through 46Listen to a talk in a class about United States history.last week, you recall, we discussed the early development of railroads in the United States. today i want to mention an even earlier form of transportation , one that brought the first European settlers to America. and that's the wooden sailing ship. from colonial times sailing ships were vital to the economy. many coastal towns depended on fishing or whaling for employment and income. this was especially true in the northeastern states. and there the wood from nearby forests and the skills of local designers and workers also formed the basis of an important shipbuilding industry. but the big profits were to be made on trade with far away places. and since sea captains often became part owners of their ships, they had a strong interest in the commercial success of their voyages. so these Yankees, that's what US sailor and officers came to be called, they carried on a very profitable trade with other parts of the world. the high point of this trade came in the mid-19th century with the introduction of the clipper ship, the enormous Yankee clippers with huge sails reaching nearly two hundred feet into sky. he'd carry passengers and cargo from New York around South America to San Francisco in less than three months and clear to China in just half a year. at that time this seemed unbelievable fast and efficient. but in the 1860s, more reliable steam-poweredship began to take over. and soon the important role of sailing ships in the US economy would come to an end.44 what aspect of United States history does the professor mainly discuss?45 According to the professor, what may be one reason for the success of the merchant ships of the United States?46 what does the professor say about clipper ships?Questions 47 through 50:Listen to part of a talk in a class on early childhood education. The professor is discussing penmanship: the quality of one's handwriting. as you prepare to become elementary school teachers, you'll be hearing a lot of disscussion about the relevance of teaching permanship. now years ago when i was studying education in college, reading writing and arithmetic were the basics of elementary school education. it went without saying that writing meant first and foremost penmanship. that is, the neatness of a child's handwriting. back then, penmanship was often taught as a separate subject from the fist grade right up through the sixth grade long after the children had moved from writing in block capital letters to cursive script. it was considered so important that sometimes prizes were even awarded for the best handwriting. but when we move ahead a few decades into the 1980s,we see teachers and administrators and even parents telling us that teaching penmanship is waste of time. with computers, they said, children can successfully manipulate the keyboard or mouse of their home computers before they can even hold a pencil. this change in attitude had an impact on the classroom. in your homework for this week you'll be looking at what statewide curriculum standards in the US say about penmanship. you'll see that in many states penmanship has beende-emphasized in a required curriculum, especially in the later years of elementary school. In california, for example, the curriculum calls for fourth-grade students to...and i quote, "write fluently and legibly in cursive or grades. but after this, the curriculum makes no further mention of penmanship in grade five, six or beyond, Any higher level of quality or neatness is simply not among the curricular objectives. your assignment is to look at what the curricular standards say for all fifty states say about penmanship.47 what is the professor's main point about penmanship in early childhood education?48 why does the professor mention prizes?49 what will the students read about for homework?50 what does the professor quote from California's curriculum requirements?。

She is expecting us at 4. And it's almost that now.2.W: Congratulations! I heard about your new job.M: Thanks. Yes, nearly perfect for me. It's really interesting. The hours are ideal and it's an easy walk from home. If only the pay were half as good as everything else.3.W: Do you know anyone who is driving to the conference in Boston next weekend?M: Pete is. I think he has room for another person.4.M: Did I hear you say you are using the newspaper in your political science class? I was wondering if when you finish it, you can pass it on to me?W: Well, we do use it in class. But I always read the copy at the library.5.W: I’ve noticed that you haven't been getting along too well with your roommate lately.M: You’ve got that right. And it's going to be a long time before I feel comfortable with him again. 6.W: How did you ever manage to get through all 1000 pages of that new spy thriller(侦探小说)? M: It took a while. But once I had started it, I couldn't put it down.7.M: Hi, Pamela, how are you doing? I heard you had an operation over the spring break.W: Yes, Bill. Thanks for asking. I was pretty much out of commission(不能使用、退役)for a few weeks there. But finally I'm back on my feet again.8.W: How about a little tennis? Say Saturday or Sunday?M: It sounds great. I could use a good workout(锻炼). It seems like all I have been doing lately is sitting in front of this computer.9.W: Did you read today's newspaper? I heard there is something about a new wonder drug(神奇新药).M: I did read an article about medical researchers being on the verge of(接近)a major breakthrough.10. M: Where have you been? We were supposed to meet at the library half an hour ago.W: Yeah, I know. I'm really sorry. I guess I just lost track of the time.11. M: I'm sorry. But you can't take your camera inside. You'll have to leave it here and pick it up after the concert.W: Well, I guess it's too late to take it back to the car. Please be careful with it. It belongs to my roommate, and she'd never forgive me if anything happens to it.12. M: The application instructions say to enclose a check or money order for twenty dollars. But I don't have a checking account(活期存款).W: You can just pick up a money order(汇票)at the post office.13. M: You know, I really think you should run for class president. Everybody knows you and likes you. And yo u’ve got some great ideas.W: Thanks. I have thought about it. But, I'm taking six classes and working a part-time job, and that's about all I can handle right now.14. M: I'm having a few friends over for a lunch tomorrow. It'll be great if you can join us.W: I doubt I'll be able to make it. My brother is leaving for Chicago tomorrow afternoon. And I promised to give him a ride to the airport.15. W: My cousin Lisa said she mailed me some books. But they never came.M: Well, you just moved into a new dormitory. She probably sent them out before she had your new address.16. M: Excuse me. Do you have the time?W: Actually I'm not positive. But I'd say it's right around noon.17. W: My dinner tastes kind of funny.M: Then why don't you have the waiter bring you something else.18. W: Did Mary meet you at the airport yesterday?M: Yes. But she sure got tired waiting for my flight to get in. We circledthe airport(在机场上空盘旋)for three hours.19. W: About this survey on the quality of life in the dorm. I feel sort of awkward because, well, I'm not realy comfortable here. Are you sure you want me to fill out this survey form?M: It's people like you who can help us target areas(找出有问题的地方) for improvement.20. M: I'm the only one in class who didn't sign up for the biology field trip. Slogging through(艰难穿越) a swamp in the rain can't be fun.W: Nope. But I've got the feeling your classmates will come back knowing some things you won't know.21. W: What are you watching?M: Some boring comedy show. But the Channel 6 news is on in a couple of minutes.22. M: Excuse me, Professor Jones. I was absent from the first class and I heard that's when you handed out the course outline. Would you happen have an extra copy?W: I don't have anyone with me. But, there are a few left in my office. Why don't you stop by after class.23. W: So, how did Jason's presentation go?M: It wasn't bad. But the topic he chose last time was much more interesting.24. M: Would you happen to know somebody who'd like to buy my car?W: Well, I don't know of anyone off hand(立刻). But I'll check with some of my friends.25. W: Do you know where the nearest bus stop is?M: Actually I'm pretty new to this area.26. M: Did you hear the weather report says we are going to get at least a foot of snow tomorrow? W: That much! That's incredible. I can't wait to get outside and play in it.27. W: Growing up we never had a TV. So, even now I'm not used to watching it much.M: Well, it's kind of like reading. Some things you find are great, but a lot are real waste of time. You have to pick and choose.28. W: I love this hat. And look, it's on sale.M: Yes, but it doesn't do much for you. What about the green one? It's a little expensive. But it really looks great on you.29. M: That's a really interesting shirt. Must be from your vacation. Huh?W: No. But you are close. My sister brought it back from Hawaii for me.30. W: Bill, your company isn't moving to the west coast after all.M: Well, not for the time being(暂时). But I've been looking into other employment opportunities here anyway. Just in case.Part B31-34W: Ok, last night you were supposed to read an article about human bones. Are there any comments about it?M: well, to begin with, I was surprised to find out there were so much going on in bones. I always assumed they were pretty lifeless.W: Well, that's an assumption many people make. But the fact is bones are made of dynamic living tissue that requires continuous maintenance and repair.M: Right. That's one of the things I found so fascinating about the article the way the bones repair themselves.W: Ok. So can you tell us how the bones repair themselves.M: Sure. See, there are two groups of different types of specialized cells in the bone that work together to do it. The first group goes to an area of the bone that needs repair. This group of cells produces the chemical that actually breaks down the bone tissue, and leaves a hole in it. After that the second group of specialized cells come and they produce the new tissue that fills in the hole that was made by the first group.W: Very good. This is a very complex process. In fact, the scientists who study human bones don't completely understand it yet. They are still trying to find out how it all actually works. Specifically, because sometimes after the first group of cells leaves a hole in the bone tissue, for some reasons, the second group doesn't completely fill in the hole. And this can cause real problems. It can actually lead to a disease in which the bone becomes weak and is easily broken.M: ok, I get it. So if the scientists can figure out what makes the specialized cells work, maybe they can find a way to make sure the second group of cells completely fills the hole in the bone tissue every time. That'll prevent the disease from every occurring.35-38M: Hi Diana, mind if I sit down?W: Not at all, Jerry. How have you been?M: Good. But I'm surprised to see you on the city bus. Your car in the shop?W: No. I've just been thinking a lot about the environment lately. So I decided the air will be a lot cleaner if we call use public transportation when we could.M: I'm sure you are right. The diesel bus isn't exactly pollution free.W: True. They'll be running a lot cleaner soon. We were just talking about that in my environmental engineering class.M: What could the city do? Install pollution in all their buses?W: They could, but those filters make the engines work harder and really cut down on the fuel efficiency. Instead they found a way to make their engines more efficient.M: How?W: Well, there is a material called XXX. It's a really good insulator. And a thin coat of it gets sprayed on the certain part of the engine.M: An insulator?W: Yeah. What it does is reflect back the heat of burning fuel. So the fuel will burn much hotter and burn up more completely.M: So a lot less unburned fuel comes out to pollute the air, right?W: And the bus will need less fuel. So with the saving on fuel cost, they say this will all pay for itself in just six months.M: Sounds like people should all go out and get some this stuff to spray their car engines.W: Well, it's not really that easy. You see, normally, the materials are fine powder. To melt it so you can spray a coat of it on the engine parts, you first have to heat it over 10,000 degrees and then, well, you get the idea. It's not something you or I be able to do ourselves.35. What is the conversation mainly about?36. Why did the woman decide to ride the city bus?37. What is the coniine oxide?38. According to the woman, what may limit the use of the coniine oxide in cars?Part C39-42Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Alice Brown. As you know, we hold a series of events during the school year on various culture topics. I am happy there's such a large crowd of both students and professors, that's it, the second of our time, our city art presentation this year. I see that almost every seat is taken. Tonight, we are lucky to have our guest, the man of considerable fame in the world of music. He began to play the piano at age of 5, by the time he was 10, he was already composing in playing his own pieces. He's a graduate of the famous Juliet School in New York City. Our guest has spent the last 45 years of his very successful career touring the world playing in concert. We are fortunate that he's consented to come share some of his experiences with us. He has had many adventures along the way, lost instruments, miss connections, no hotel room, locked concert halls, and so on. He's played for all of the most well-known conductors, not only in North America but all over the world. The title of his talk is the concert tour 40 years on 4 continents. Please join me in welcoming Mr. Daniel Robinson, one of the foremost pianists of our day.39. What is the main purpose of Dean Brown's remarks?40. Why does Dean Brown feel pleased?41. When did the pianist begin to play his own composition?42. What will the pianist mainly do?43-45Let's turn our focus now to advertising. We all know what an advertisement is, it's essentially a message that announces something for sale. Now, there is an important precondition(前提) that must exist before you have advertising, and that's a large supply of consumer goods, that is, things to sell. You see, in the place with a demand for a product is greater than the supply, there's no need to advertise. Now, the earliest form of advertising going back many hundreds of years with a simple sign there were shop doors that told you whether the shop was a bakery, a butcher shop or what have you, then was the advent of the printing crest. Advertising increased substantially as for products like coffee, tea, and chocolate appeared in newspapers and other periodicals as well as on the side of the buildings. In the American colonies, advertising in communication's media like newspapers and pamphlets became a major factor in marketing goods and services. By modern standards, these early advertisements were quite small and subdue(被压制的), not the splash sheet whole page spreads of today, still some of them appeared on the front page of newspapers, probably because the news often consist of less and fresh reports from distant Europe, for the ads were current or local. Advertising really came into its own and became a central part of doing business, during the industry revolution, suddenly there was a much greater supply of things to sell. And as we said earlier, that is the driving force behind advertising. People's attention had been drawn to the new product. Let's take a look at some of the advertisements from that time.43. What is the main topic of the talk?44. What does the speaker say is the important precondition for advertising?45. According to the speaker, what was the first advertisement?46-50We know then that in the US, it's the job of Congress to review propose new laws, which we call bills, and perhaps to modify these bills and then vote on them. But even if the bill passed in Congress, it still doesn't become a law until the president had a chance to review it too. And if it's not to the president's liking, the bill can be vetoed or killed in either of two ways. One is by a veto message. The president has ten days to veto the bill by returning it to Congress, along with the message explaining why it's being rejected. This keeps the bill from becoming a law unless overwhelming majorities of both houses of Congress vote to over-right the president's veto. Something they rarely do. Often, lawmakers simply revised the vetoed bill and passed it again. This time, in a form the president less likely to object to, and thus less likely to want to veto. The other way the president can kill a bill is by pocket veto(搁置否决权). Here's what happen. If the president doesn't sign the bill within ten days, and Congress adjourn(休会)during that time, then the bill will not become law. Notice that is only the end of entire session of Congress that the pocket veto can be used, not just whenever Congress take the shorter break, say, for a summer vacation, after a pocket veto, that particular bill is dead. If the lawmakers in Congress want to push the matter in their next session, they'll have to start all over with a brand new version of the bill.46. What is the main topic of the talk?47. According to the speaker, what does the veto message explain?48. According to the speaker, what do lawmakers often do after a veto message is issued?49. What happens to a bill as a result of a pocket veto?50. When can a pocket veto be used。

Unfortunately I think it's supposed to stay as cold all day.Q: What can be inferred about the speakers?2 M: that sweater is so unusual, and yet it looks familiar. Uh...you remember that ive mention that it's important to read the assigned poems aloud,so you can develop and appreciation of the sounds of the poetry: the rhymes, the rhythm, the repetition of words or sounds, and to get a sense of the interplay between the sounds of the words and their meaning. this is really critical as we move into modern poetry, especially by writers who place so much importance on sounds that the meaning becomes all letter relevant. like this line by Gertrude Stein that I'd like to quote. listen, listen as i say the words. "rose is a rose is a rose is a rose."taken literally this would seems to be an empty statement, one which gives us no information. but the purpose of a poem need not be to inform the reader of anything, but rather to evoke feelings. to create a sensual as well as phonically pleasing experience. now Gertrude Stein was better known for her prose than for her poems. but i'd like to like to quote this line because of its musicality, and because i think it helps open up our awareness to the unconventionally ricism of contemporary poets. you'll see this in your homework tongiht as you read the poetry of John Ashbery, especially if you read it out loud, which i recommend you do. poets like ashbery don't rely so much on any formal rhyme scheme or meter as on the musical quality of the individual words themselves. as i said,Stein was better known for her non-poetical work. and now i'd like to touch briefly on her essay entitled "Converstaion and Explanation". this work deals with her theory of writing and will help to explain some of the things we've talking about.40 what does the professor mainly discuss?41 what does the professor say about Gertrude Stein as a writer?42 why does the professor recommend the students do as part of their homework?43 what does the professor recommend the students do as part of their homework?Questions 44 through 46Listen to a talk in a class about United States history.last week, you recall, we discussed the early development of railroads in the United States. today i want to mention an even earlier form of transportation , one that brought the first European settlers to America. and that's the wooden sailing ship. from colonial times sailing ships were vital to the economy. many coastal towns depended on fishing or whaling for employment and income. this was especially true in the northeastern states. and there the wood from nearby forests and the skills of local designers and workers also formed the basis of an important shipbuilding industry. but the big profits were to be made on trade with far away places. and since sea captains often became part owners of their ships, they had a strong interest in the commercial success of their voyages. so these Yankees, that's what US sailor and officers came to be called, they carried on a very profitable trade with other parts of the world. the high point of this trade came in the mid-19th century with the introduction of the clipper ship, the enormous Yankee clippers with huge sails reaching nearly two hundred feet into sky. he'd carry passengers and cargo from New York around South America to San Francisco in less than three months and clear to China in just half a year. at that time this seemed unbelievable fast and efficient. but in the 1860s, more reliable steam-poweredship began to take over. and soon the important role of sailing ships in the US economy would come to an end.44 what aspect of United States history does the professor mainly discuss?45 According to the professor, what may be one reason for the success of the merchant ships of the United States?46 what does the professor say about clipper ships?Questions 47 through 50:Listen to part of a talk in a class on early childhood education. The professor is discussing penmanship: the quality of one's handwriting. as you prepare to become elementary school teachers, you'll be hearing a lot of disscussion about the relevance of teaching permanship. now years ago when i was studying education in college, reading writing and arithmetic were the basics of elementary school education. it went without saying that writing meant first and foremost penmanship. that is, the neatness of a child's handwriting. back then, penmanship was often taught as a separate subject from the fist grade right up through the sixth grade long after the children had moved from writing in block capital letters to cursive script. it was considered so important that sometimes prizes were even awarded for the best handwriting. but when we move ahead a few decades into the 1980s,we see teachers and administrators and even parents telling us that teaching penmanship is waste of time. with computers, they said, children can successfully manipulate the keyboard or mouse of their home computers before they can even hold a pencil. this change in attitude had an impact on the classroom. in your homework for this week you'll be looking at what statewide curriculum standards in the US say about penmanship. you'll see that in many states penmanship has been de-emphasized in a required curriculum, especially in the later years of elementary school.

It is clear that at some stage of history, humans began to carry their food to central places, called home bases, where itLine was shared and consumed with the young and other adults. The use of home bases is a(5) fundamental component of human social behavior; the common meal served at a common hearth is a powerful symbol, a mark of social unity. Home base behavior does not occur among nonhuman primates and is rare among mammals. It is unclear when humans began to use home bases, what kind of communications and social relations were involved, and what the ecological and food-choice contexts of the shift were. Work on early tools,(10) surveys of paleoanthropological sites, development and testing of broad ecological theories, and advances in comparative primatology are contributing to knowledge about this central chapter in human prehistory. One innovative approach to these issues involves studying damage and wear on stone tools. Researchers make tools that replicate excavated specimens as closely as possible(15) and then try to use them as the originals might have been used, in woodcutting, hunting, or cultivation. Depending on how the tool is used, characteristic chippage patterns andmicroscopically distinguishable polishes develop near the edges. The first application of this method of analysis to stone tools that are 1.5 million to 2 million years old indicates that, from the start, an important function of early stone tools was to extract highly(20) nutritious food—meat and marrow-from large animal carcasses. Fossil bones with cut marks caused by stone tools have been discovered lying in the same 2-million-year-old layers that yielded the oldest such tools and the oldest hominid specimens (including humans) with larger than ape-sized brains. This discovery increases scientists' certainty about when human ancestors began to eat more meat than present-day nonhuman(25) primates. But several questions remain unanswered: how frequently meat eating occurred; what the social implications of meat eating were; and whether the increased use of meat coincides with the beginnings of the use of home bases.1. The passage mainly discusses which of the following aspects of hominid behavior?(A) Changes in eating and dietary practices(B) The creation of stone hunting tools(C) Social interactions at home bases(D) Methods of extracting nutritious food from carcasses2. According to the passage, bringing a meal to a location to be shared by many individuals is(A) an activity typical of nonhuman primates(B) a common practice among animals that eat meat(C) an indication of social unity .(D) a behavior that encourages better dietary habits3. The word "whether" in line 26 is closest in meaning to(A) if(B) how(C) why(D) whenQuestions 11-20In seventeenth-century colonial North America, all day-to-day cooking was done in the fireplace. Generally large, fireplaces were planned for cooking as well as for warmth. Those in the Northeast were usually four or five feet high, and in the South, they wereLine often high enough for a person to walk into. A heavy timber called the mantel tree was(5) used as a lintel to support the stonework above the fireplace opening. This timber might be scorched occasionally, but it was far enough in front of the rising column of heat to be safe from catching fire. Two ledges were built across from each other on the inside of the chimney. On these rested the ends of a "lug pole" from which pots were suspended when cooking. Wood(10) from a freshly cut tree was used for the lug pole, so it would resist heat, but it had to be replaced frequently because it dried out and charred, and was thus weakened. Sometimes the pole broke and the dinner fell into the fire. When iron became easier to obtain, it was used instead of wood for lug poles, and later fireplaces had pivoting metal rods to hang pots from. (15) Beside the fireplace and built as part of it was the oven. It was made like a small, secondary fireplace with a flue leading into the main chimney to draw out smoke. Sometimes the door of the oven faced the room, but most ovens were built with the opening facing into the fireplace. On baking days (usually once or twice a week) a roaring fire of "oven wood," consisting of brown maple sticks, was maintained in the oven until its(20) walls were extremely hot. The embers were later removed, bread dough was put into the oven, and the oven was sealed shut until the bread was fully baked. Not ai! baking was done in a big oven, however. Also used was an iron "bake kettle," which looked like a stewpot on legs and which had an iron lid. This is said to have worked well when it was placed in the fireplace, surrounded by glowing wood embers, with more(25) embers piled on its lid.11. Which of the following aspects of domestic life in colonial North America does the passage mainly discuss?(A) Methods of baking bread(B) Fireplace cooking(C) The use of iron kettles in a typical kitchen(D) The types of wood used in preparing meals12. The author mentions the fireplaces built in the South to illustrate(A) how the materials used were similar to the materials used in northeastern fireplaces(B) that they served diverse functions(C) that they were usually larger than northeastern fireplaces(D) how they were safer than northeastern fireplaces13. The word "scorched" in line 6 is closest in meaning to(A) burned(B) cut(C) enlarged(D)bent14. The word "it" in line 6 refers to(A) the stonework(B) the fireplace opening(C) the mantel tree(D) the rising column of heat15. According to the passage, how was food usually cooked in a pot in the seventeenth century?(A) By placing the pot directly into the fire(B) By putting the pot in the oven(C) By filling the pot with hot water(D) By hanging the pot on a pole over the fire16. The word "obtain" in line 12 is closest in meaning to(A) maintain(B) reinforce(C) manufacture(D) acquire17. Which of the following is mentioned in paragraph 2 as a disadvantage of using a wooden lug pole?(A) It was made of wood not readily available.(B) It was difficult to move or rotate.(C) It occasionally broke.(D) It became too hot to touch.18. It can be inferred from paragraph 3 that, compared to other firewood, "oven wood" produced(A) less smoke(B) more heat(C) fewer embers(D) lower flames19. According to paragraph 3, all of the following were true of a colonial oven EXCEPT:(A) It was used to heat the kitchen every day.(B) It was built as part of the main fireplace.(C) The smoke it generated went out through the main chimney.(D) It was heated with maple sticks.20. According to the passage, which of the following was an advantage of a "bake kettle"?(A) It did not take up a lot of space in the fireplace.(B) It did not need to be tightly closed.(C) It could be used in addition to or instead of the oven.(D) It could be used to cook several foods at one time.Questions 21-29Butterflies are among the most extensively studied insects—an estimated 90 percent of theworld's species have scientific names. As a consequence, they are perhaps the best group of insects for examining patterns of terrestrial biotic diversity and distribution. Butterflies alsohave a favorable image with the general public. Hence, they are an excellent group for(5) communicating information on science and conservation issues such as diversity.Perhaps the aspect of butterfly diversity that has received the most attention over the past century is the striking difference in species richness between tropical and temperate regions. For example, in 1875 one biologist pointed out the diversity of butterflies in the Amazon when he mentioned that about 700 species were found within an hour's walk, whereas the total (10) number found on the British islands did not exceed 66, and the whole of Europe supported only321. This early comparison of tropical and temperate butterfly richness has been well confirmed.A general theory of diversity would have to predict not only this difference betweentemperate and tropical zones, but also patterns within each region, and how these patterns vary (15) among different animal and plant groups. However, for butterflies, variation of species richnesswithin temperate or tropical regions, rather man between them, is poorly understood. Indeed, comparisons of numbers of species among the Amazon basin, tropical Asia, and Africa are still mostly "personal communication" citations, even for vertebrates, In other words, unlike comparison between temperate and tropical areas, these patterns are still in the documentation(20)phase.In documenting geographical variation in butterfly diversity, some arbitrary, practicaldecisions are made. Diversity, number of species, and species richness are used synonymously; little is known about the evenness of butterfly distribution. The New World butterflies makeup the preponderance of examples because they are the most familiar species. It is hoped that (25) by focusing on them, the errors generated by imperfect and incomplete taxonomy will be minimized.21. Which aspect of butterflies does the passage mainly discuss?(A) Their physical characteristics(B) Their names(C) Their adaptation to different habitats(D) Their variety22. The word "consequence" in line 2 is closest in meaning to(A) result(B) explanation(C) analysis(D) requirement23. Butterflies are a good example for communicating information about conservation issues because they(A) are simple in structure(B) are viewed positively by people(C) have been given scientific names(D) are found mainly in temperateclimates24. The word "striking" in line 7 is closest in meaning to(A) physical(B) confusing(C) noticeable(D) successful25. The word "exceed" in line 10 is closest in meaning to(A) locate(B) allow(C) go beyond(D) come close to26. All of the following are mentioned as being important parts of a general theory of diversity EXCEPT(A) differences between temperate and tropical zones(B) patterns of distribution of species in each region(C) migration among temperate and tropical zones(D) variation of patterns of distribution of species among different animals and plants。

托福考试听力真题回顾2005年托福考试听力真题:5月Part BQuestion 31-33W: Hi, Ed. Looks like you were here early.M: Yeah. Class doesn't start for a ten more minutes, so I put up the novel I’m reading.W: What is it?M: It is called Sister Carrie. It is about a woman named Carrie who leaves her country home to earn a living in Chicago and New York.W: Oh, I've studied Theodore Dreiser(美国小说家). His work is a little depressing, but I like him, even though his characters always get in trouble. He tricks them with sympathy. How do you like Sister Carrie?M: It's not what I expected. On the back cover it says the book created a lot of controversy when it was first published in 1900. It even says the publisher withdrew out from market after only 500 copies were sold. But I don't see why.W: Well. The novel might not be shocking by our standards but it sure created a stir then. Think about what Carrie does. She leaves her country home and gets caught up in some personal scandals in the city. Now most other authors of that time would have punished the character to provide a moral lesson, but Dreiser has Carrie become a successful actress at the end.M: Wow, that puts the story in a different perspective. I bet Dreiser must have been discouraged when the publisher took it off from market.W: He sure was. He stopped writing fictions for a while and did work as a journalist and an editor.M: Well, how did the book become recognized?W: Some British reviewers praised the novel and then another publisher released it in 1907. Eventually people recognized the novelfor its realism and Dreiser went on to write other successful works.31. What is the conversation mainly about?32. According to the woman, how is Sister Carrie different from other novels at its time?33. How did Sister Carrie eventually gain recognition?Question34-38M: Before we began today's topic, I'd like to review the phases of child language acquisition that we went over yesterday. Who'd like to summarize for us? Yes, Lisa.W: Well, first of all, you said that new-borns only make rudimentary vocalizations because the voice box isn't in position for speech yet. But that at about three month of age baby starts to utter the first sounds that resemble language sounds. The sounds of consonants like "k" and "g".M: That's right. And after this stage come the meaningless syllables, a consonant followed by a vowel. For example, the "dada" sounds. And at the next stage comes a real breakthrough. Can you tell us about that, Lisa?W: Well, between six months and one year of age, babies begin to associate sounds with meaning. So, when you say "dog", they know you're referring to the four-legged animal that is their house pet. At this stage they start to build a vocabulary. And in a matter of month they are learning ten to twenty new words a day. This vocabulary growth continues until adolescents.M: Right. And isn’t it amazing that by the time children are two or three years old they are stringing sentences together? Certainly no one would dispute that children had a tremendous capacity for learning language, what linguists are still trying to determine is how this language acquisition takes place.34. What is the class mainly discussing?35. Why does the student mention the sound "k" and "g"?36. According to the student, why are the news born not able to make language like sounds?37. According to the discussion, when the vocabulary growthfirst starts to increase dramatically?38. According to the discussion, what do the linguists still not know?托福听力的备考技巧一、听文章次数要限制。

But I wanna take you back to a time when newspapers first started to be printed in the United States, well, back then they were still British colonies. Anyway let’s discuss for a moment the role newspapers played in colonial times, Er, about around the 1700’s. Before that time, there were of course many printed materials, the books certainly but. ..but also pamphlets, government and legal documents, things of this sort. The first colonial newspaper to appear was not what we would expect today, it’s only one small sheet printed on two sides. It was also different from United States’newspapers today in that all news had be officially approved by the governor before printing. And early printer name James Franklin, took a courageous step by starting an independent newspaper. Franklin, who owned his own printing press, wanted to be free form outside control above all, he wanted the paper to entertain the people with humors and critical news items. Franklin’s newspaper was especially significant because literacy was increasing at the time, even those who weren’t able to read or expose to the information in the newspapers by hearing it. Newspapers were read loud everywhere, in homes, workshops and taverns. By the mid 1700, there were more than a dozen colonial newspapers what James Franklin began was a traditionof the independent press where ideas and information spread quickly, and humor and different opinions were tolerated.Q39. What is the talk mainly about?Q40. According to the professor, why did James Franklin start independent newspaper? Q41. How did James Franklin’s newspaper different from the previous newspaper in colonies?Q42. What does the professor say about the colonists who unable to read?Q43-46Let’s move the discussion away from Jupiter itself and look at its moons. Now there is one in particular that spend in the news recently and that’s Ganymede. We’ve known for a long time that Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system. But in 1996, the Galileo aerospace probe sent back the information showing us the Ganymede in many ways. Behaves like a full fledged planet. Now Ganymede is larger than Mercury, and about half the size of earth. It’s covered with ice and some dark rocky debris. While Galileo has showed us though is that Ganymede’s surface is deeply wrinkled with ridges and fissures. A sign that it experiences some of the same dynamic forces that move continents and cause quake on earth. But Galileo detected an even bigger surprise for scientists. Ganymede appears to generate its own magnetic field. That’s a planet like quality that set it apart from all other moons. Now what causes this magnetic field is a matter of the debate for scientists. But there are a couple of possibilities .It could mean that despite its cold exterior,Ganymede has a core of a molten metal inside it generating the magnetic field. That’s what causes the earth’s magnetic field. Or it could mean that there is a thin layer of salty water conducting electricity just beneath Ganymede’s surface. Something else Galileo was able to detect does it flew by Ganymede was sudden increase in the density of electrical charge particles. Now what this indicates is the presence of atmosphere, which in turn has let scientists to believe that Ganymede has some sort of atmosphere, however thin it maybe.Q43. What is the main topic of the lecture?Q44. What does the speaker say makes Ganymede different from all the moons?Q45. According to the speaker, what may lie deep under the surface of Ganymede. Q46. What does the speaker say about the electrically charged particles that were detected near Ganymede.Q47-50Let’s talk the environmental issue that has to do with how common household products have changed. More and more products contain bacterial killing chemicals these days. These antibacterial chemicals aren’t just in product like soap. They are in all sorts of household cleaners and toothpaste. And if you think about it for second you will realize that most of those chemicals just end up going down the drain. But you are probably thinking that all that stuff go through a treatment plan that removeschemicals, right? After all that’s what happens to stuff that goes down the drain. Well, waste water is treated, but that doesn’t usually remove all the chemicals in it. The chemicals left in the treated water get into the aquatic environment. That is into the rivers, and streams where plants and fish and other animals live. Now to find out the affect of antibacterial chemicals on fresh water ecosystems, a study was done with algae, which are tiny plant like organisms .Different spices algae were taken to a lab and the expose to just a few antibacterial chemicals found in the streams. And guess what? In the experiment, the overall gross of algae and the number of spices dropped. This is not good and here is why. Algae are the base of the aquatic of food chain, which means that other organisms depend on them for food. So if the chemicals kill algae at the bottom of the food chain, the whole system is being disrupted.Q47. What is the professor mainly discussing?Q48. According to the professor, how have household products changed?Q49. What does the professor say about the treatment of waste water?Q50. What does the subject mentioned by the professor?。

Now,it's mainly a hobby.butback in the 17th and 18th century African and American women wove the baskets for use on hte rice plantations.there were two types of backets then:workbaskets and baskets for use in the home. the wrokbaskets were made out of the more delicate sweet grass.they were used for everything fromfruit baskets to baby cradles.40 what is the talk mainly about?41 how did the women mentioned in the talk learn to wave basket?42 according to the speaker, what type of baskets was make out of bulrush? 43 what is the main reason taht the women in South Carolina now weave baskets?Questions 44 through 46:this morning i want to tell u about a recent scientific discovery dealingwith the relation between plants and animals.this is about a desert shrubwhose leaves can shoot up a stream of poisonous resin a distance of six feet.do you think it would be safe from all attacks by insects.but a recentstudy has found one insect,a beetle, that can chew its way past the plant's defense system by cutting the mainly vein that delivers the poison to the leaves.this vein cutting is jut one method the beetles used to prepare asafe meal.another is by cutting a path all the way across the leave to hold the flow of chemicals.then they simply eat between the veins of poison.in the past, scienists who studied inset adaptation to plant defenses have广阔空间,缘于飞跃 第 7 页共 8 页focused on chemical responses.that is,how the insects can neutrala or alter the poisonous substances plants produce.what's unique about this chewing strategy is that the beetle is actually exhibiting a behavior response tothe plant's defenses rather than the more commom chemical response. it is only after a beetle's survived weveral encounters with the plant' resinthat it learns how to avoid the poison:by chewing through the resintransporting veins on the next leaf it eats.and thus gives itself a meal.however,it can take a bettle an hours an a half of careful veincutting to prepare a small leaf that takes it only a few minutes toeat.so,though the method is effective,it's not very efficient.41 what is the talk mainly about?42 what is unusual about the desert plant?43 how can the beetles avoid being poisoned by the plant?Questions 47 through 50:we're going to start our discussion of poetry in Western Europe with theIliad and the Odyssey.these two great poems stand out as great examples of the earliest Euopean poems.they are believeed to have been written some time between800BC and 700BC,partly because the poems refer to the social conditions of thattime, conditions that have been validated by the findings of archeologists.but just who was the poet who laid down these cornerstones of western literature?well, tradition ascribles them to a man namedHomer, but we know virtually nothing about this Homer. In fact, some say that such a poet never existed at all, that neither the Iliad nor the Odyssey was written by a single poet, but rather each poem is composed of the writingsof several people.this, anyway,is the view of a school of literary criticsin the 18th century known as the Analysts. the Analysts pointed to internal evidence such as variations in the literary devices used in the poem toargue that each work waaas in fact a collection of sereral poems by several Greek authors.Opposing the ananlysts were a second group of scholars called the Unitarian. they insisted that the Iliad and the Odyssey could have been 广阔空间,缘于飞跃第 8 页共 8 页the wrok of single poetic genius. To support their argument, they stressamong other things the consistency of the character portrayed in the poetry.this wouldn't've been possilbe, they said,if they were written bymany different poets.now how we look at the Homeric question today has been greatly influenced by someone named Milman Parry,an American scholar who first presented his ideas about Homer in the 1930s. so let's take a look at Parry's research and how it affects what modern day scholars think about Homer.47 what aspect of the Iliad and the Odyssey does the professor mainly discuss?48 according to the professor, what is one of the claims made by theanalysts?49 According to the Unitarians, what is one type of evidence that a single poet could have written both the Iliad and the Odyssey?50 What will the professor probably talk about next?。
