伍尔夫的房间里的天使
Virginia Woolf describes her two experiences on the way to being a writer. She is avoiding the traditional women's roles and achieving the liberty of thought and expression. The first experience was called by her "killing the angel in the house". She didn't want to obey the unspoken rules in society to be a sympathiser to men, to be parasitic and to be sustained by men. She wanted to be independent financially and spiritually.Just like in China, many women, besides women writers, have already realized that they are human beings in nature and that they should have their dignity and independence. For example, Suqing she sustained herself by her royalty from a book or an article. She is not a traditional woman but a modern woman who can control her own life and fate. The second experience of Woolf is about liberty of thought and expression. In other words, she wanted to be a libertarian who could express her own opinions with no consideration about men's.In China, in my point of view, no woman has the same experience. The reason is not that there is no problem with Chinese women, but that Chinese women are still unaware of the existence of the problem. In China, of either the ancient times or the modern times, all of Chinese are affected by the Confucianism deeply. They both have the profound thoughts or ideas, but they never express them directly. Men and women both use an implicit way to develop some topics. Especially women, theyhave never thought about breaking through the bottom lines of society. Therefore, they don't have the same experience as Woolf.。
Women in Victorian era (维多利亚时代的女性)
Women as Educationally Unequal
Women were supposed to know the things necessary to bring up their children and to keep house. Subjects as history, geography and general literature were of extreme importance. Women who wanted to study such subjects as law, physics, engineering, science or art were satirized and dismissed.
If women had affairs with other men?
Women who had affairs with other men would be considered unclean. If men found out that their wife had been unclean in some way, they would kick their wives out of the house. In fact, being unclean was considered a generally acceptable reason for a man to divorce his wife.
Believing that his wife was the perfect Victorian wife, he wrote “The Angel in the House” about her (in 1854), which became increasingly popular through the rest of the 19th century and continued to be influential into the 20th century. The following excerpt will give us a sense of the ideal woman and the male-female relationship presented by Patmore’s poem: Man must be pleased; but him to please Is woman’s pleasure; down the gulf Of his condoled (同情或悲伤) necessities She casts her best, she flings herself. How often flings for naught, and yokes Her heart to an icicle (感情淡薄的人) or whim, Whose each impatient word provokes Another, not from her, but him;

Angel in the house
The Angel in the house is the title of a poem written by Coventry Patmore. The heroine of this poem is molded into a perfect woman in the Victorian period. When someone is referred to as an Angel in the house, an image of woman will come to people’s mind that she is charming, obedience, sympathetic and capable of house work. Ostensibly, the Angel in the house is similar to Chinese concept of “贤妻良母”. But the connotations of these two terms have many differences. The first and the most important difference of these two concepts is that “the angle in the house” dose not have a wish of her own, while “贤妻良母” is mentally independent. The “Angle” should be “sympathetic, be tender, flatter, deceive, and use all the arts and wiles of woman”. She is too obedience to talk out her own mind. That is why Virginia Woolf wants to kill her so much. In Victorian period, men were supposed to work and strive for living outside, while women were supposed to comfort men and provided them with a cozy life environment. Men were in the dominant position. This unequal condition made “the angel in the house” more like a servant. However, “贤妻良母” is not totally depend on her husband. It is true that she is considerate to her husband and child, but she doesn’t have to follow every instruction of her husband. Instead of being merely a servant, she has to be wise enough to assist her husband and child. She will come up with brilliant ideas at a crucial moment, and share the same burden of family with her husband.Secondly, “贤妻良母”dose not have to be extraordinary charming in appearance as what seems important to “the angel in the house”. For English men, a perfect woman should be perfect both inside and outside. A good-looking woman is a visual and emotional splendor, so the angel may care much about her appearance. While “贤妻良母”emphasizes more about the temperate disposition. She won’t bewilder a man with her sex appeal. She has too much to care about more than appearance. Finally, “贤妻良母” has a stronger character than “the angel”. “the Angel” was separate from the complex society. They are pure and morally noble. This kind of family-centered and amiable woman is often vulnerable. On the contrary, “贤妻良母”takes a lot of duty both in the working field and at home. She needs to overcome all sorts of obstacles lying in her future. In society, she should be ferocious and sensible enough to gain her life bread, while at home she must be patient and caring to the family members. A more complex environment makes “贤妻良母” stronger in heart. In conclusion, “the angel in the house”has been chained by so many social conventions, while “贤妻良母” is less tied up by traditional prejudice against women. Although they are both perfect women, “贤妻良母”has more freedom and opportunity to approach life and have fun,。

这是多么吊诡的“楼上楼下”组合,却又如此巧妙深刻地吻合了世间万物既对立又统一的辩证原则。
这就是两位美国女批评家桑德拉·吉尔伯特(Sandra M. Gilbert,1936-)和苏珊·古芭(Susan Gubar,1944-)在《阁楼上的(The Madwoman in the 疯女人:女性作家与19世纪文学想象》Attic: The Woman Writer and the Nineteenth-Century Literary Imagination)中为维多利亚文学中的女性安置的家庭空间和角色分工。

Queen Victoria's reign (1837-1901) was a period of intensive industrialization, urbanization, and social change during which a woman's place was in the home, as domesticity and motherhood were considered by society at large to be a sufficient emotional fulfillment for females. In the 19th century upper class and middle class women were not expected to earn their own living.women rarely had careers and most professions refused entry to women.Women played a central role of irresponsibility and domesticity, and the ideal of femininity was entailed in the idea of a “woman's mission”, which was that of playing a model mother, wife and daughter. The qualities a young Victorian gentle woman needed, were to be innocent, virtuous, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. As the mid-Victorian boom got underway the demand for female and juvenile labor expanded.Urbanization created manifold opportunities for female employment. Thus most women in Victorian society, in the two thirds of the population below the upper and middle classes, worked for wages.Women's work was often part-time, casual, and not regarded as important enough to declare. With the emphasis primarily upon their role as wives and mothers, women workers did not usually see their occupation as a centrally defining characteristic of their lives, and therefore frequently failed to declare it.Women provided a flexible, cheap and adaptive workforce for factories and sweatshops, and had feminine skills associated with some of the most rapidly expanding consumer goods industries at the forefront of industrialization such as textiles, pottery and clothing. But working women had to shoulder the double burden of waged work and the bulk of household responsibilities, and where their role in politics remained marginal. They still lived the stereotyped role in Victorian society, struggling for more fair treatment in employment. On September 25 2014, Emma Watson the 24-year-old Harry Potter star was giving a very inspiring speech calling for men to play a greater role in ending gender inequality after she joined forces with UN women to launch the He For She organization.“He For She” is described as a “solidarity movement for gender equality that brings together one half of humanity in support of the other of humanity, for the entirety of humanity.” The UN Women He For She campaign aims to get 100,000 men and boys involved in the fight to achieve gender equality. At the United Nations headquarters, Emma revealed the sexism she has experienced throughout her life, saying it started at the age of eight when she was branded “bossy” for wanting to direct school plays. She continued:“At 15 my girlfriends started dropping out of thei r sports teams because they didn't want to appear 'masculine'...at 18 my male friends were unable to express their feelings.”But she illustrated the reality that “No country in the world can yet say that they have achieved gender equality.”So she said,“Men— I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation.Gender equality is your issue too.”Then she continued to suggest that“If men don’t have to be aggressive in order to be accepted, women won’t feel compelled to be submissive. If men d on’t have to control, women won’t have to be controlled. Both men and women should feel free tobe sensitive. Both men and women should feel free to be strong… It is time that we all perceive gender on a spectrum instead of two sets of opposing ideals.”Just as the head of UN Women Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka said,“Our main goal of He For She is to increase the involvement of men and boys in the struggle to achieve gender equality. It cannot be that women will do this alone, it remains an important women's issue that requires the whole of society, men and women, to be involved.”Along with Emma, they called on the world's fathers, sons, husbands and brothers to stand up and support equality for women in all areas of life.According to Inter-Parliamentary Union less that 22 percent of parliamentarians are women. There are also still 100 countries with laws that prevent women's meaningful involvement in the economy.Projections indicate that if things don't change it will take 95 years to achieve gender equality, and by 2020 and some 140,000 girls will be forced into child marriage. Those facts all indicate that gender equality still takes longer to be completely achieved. From ideal domestic women who are dedicated to family to modern professional woman advocating for gender equality issues taken into consideration by both sexes, women's movement has undergone a long period of struggle against social stereotype and prejudice.Despite great achievement, there is still a long way to go to attain the goal of gender equality and freedom as women must first make a more true and complete version of themselves in various walks of life.References:[1]Anastasia Blackwood. The Roles of Women in the Victorian 贤妻良母”与 ANGEL IN THE HOUSE
The Comparison between ‘the angle in the house’ and the ‘贤妻良母’Ostensibly, “the angle in the house” seems to be synonymous with the Chinese phrase 贤妻良母. They are both obedient and willing to sacrifice for the family. But when we look closer, we may find that there are several marked differences between them. The first and the essential difference between them is that the angle in the house never has a mind or wish of her own while a 贤妻良母must have it. From the literal meaning we can see that a 贤妻良母means a good assistant to husband and a good mother to child, which indicating that she needs to give appropriate advice to husband on certain matters, helping to deal with things in proper ways, and educate child to be a good man. All of these require her to have a sense of right and wrong and make judgment on her own.Anotherdifference between them is their contribution in a family. For angle in the house, she just needs to be meek, mild and resigned. There is no burden on her shoulder, there is no pressure for her to bear. She just needs to accept whatever comes to her. However, for a 贤妻良母, she must be the prop of a family, helping her husband to earn their bread, managing everything in the family no matter big or small and share all the happiness and bitterness. One more difference we can find in them is that their characters are different. The ‘angle in the house’ is a sympathetic lady, she flatters, deceives and uses all the arts and wiles of woman. On the contrary, a 贤妻良母must have strength in her character. With so many burdens to bear, she must be tough and strong. Also she has to be honest and brave. When her husband or child makes a mistake, she must point it out even at the risk of contradicting her husband’s mind. She can be an obedient wife, but if needed, she can also be a strong man.。
The Angle in the House
The Angle in the House,
Coventry Kersey Dighton Patmore (23 July 1823 –26 November 1896) was an English poet[1] and critic best known for The Angel in the House, his narrative poem about an ideal happy marriage.Good morning ladies and gentlemenThe Angel in the House is a narrative poem by Coventry Patmore, first published in 1854 and expanded until 1862. Although largely ignored upon publication, it became enormously popular during the later 19th century and its influence continued well into the twentieth. The poem was an idealised account of Patmore's courtship of his first wife, Emily, whom he believed to be the perfect woman. The poem is in two main parts, but was originally published in four instalments. The first was published with the main title in 1854. It was followed by "The Espousals" (1856), "Faithful for Ever" (1860), and "The Victories of Love" (1862). The latter two instalments are effectively a separate poem, related to the main text. The first two instalments form a single coherent poem. It begins with a preface in which the poet, called Felix Vaughan in the book, tells his wife that he is going to write a long poem about her. The narrative then begins with an account of the poet's youth when he meets Honoria Churchill, the woman who is to become his wife. It proceeds in a series of short lyrics, representing Felix's reflections on his beloved, and on the nature of ideal femininity. There are also lyrics written from the point of view of Honoria. These reflective and lyrical sections are set into a narrative of the growing relationship between the couple, the emergence of a rival suitor, Honoria's cousin Frederick, who is rejected in favour of Felix, and the couple's eventual marriage. The final two instalments, known together by the title The Victories of Love, are written mostly from the point of view of Frederick, the rejected suitor, who marries another woman, Jane, after his rejection by Honoria. Unlike the first part, this section is in the form of an epistolary novel. Each poem is presented as a letter from one character to another. The initial letters, between Frederick and his mother, reveal that Frederick admits to feeling dissatisfied with his wife, especially whenever he meets his first love and her husband. The poem describes his struggle to overcome these feelings and to concentrate all his love on his wife, who also expresses her own doubts in letters to her mother. The other characters express their anxieties and hopes about the relationship between Frederick and Jane. Honoria helps Jane by her own example, and in the end Frederick overcomes his doubts and feels complete devotion to his wife. Following the publication of Patmore's poem, the term angel in the house came to be used in reference to women who embodied the Victorian feminine ideal: a wife and mother who was selflessly devoted to her children and submissive to her husband. Adèle Ratignolle, a character in Kate Chopin's novel The Awakening, is a literary example of the angel in the house.Another example is in the What Katy Did novels of Susan Coolidge about a pre-pubescent tomboy who becomes a paraplegic. They are based on her own life in 19th Century America. Katy eventually walks again, but not before she learns to become the "angel in the house", that is, the socially acceptable "ideal" of docile womanhood. In Thomas Hardy's The Return of the Native, Thomasin Yeobright is also described as 'the angelof the house'. Thomasin is the antithesis to Hardy's main female protagonist, Eustacia Vye, who is the opposite of the Victorian female "ideal".Images were also created with this name, including Millais' portrait of Patmore's wife Emily, and Julia Margaret Cameron's photograph of an enraptured girl. Later feminist writers have had a less positive view of the Angel. Virginia Woolf satirized the ideal of femininity depicted in the poem, writing that "She [the perfect wife] was intensely sympathetic. She was immensely charming. She was utterly unselfish. She excelled in the difficult arts of family life. She sacrificed daily. If there was a chicken, she took the leg; if there was a draught she sat in it ... Above all, she was pure." (Woolf, 1966: 2, 285) She added that she "bothered me and wasted my time and so tormented me that at last I killed her" (Woolf, 1966: 2, 285). Nel Noddings views her as "infantile, weak and mindless" (1989: 59). Similarly, Charlotte Perkins Gilman wrote a short essay entitled The Extinct Angel in which she described the angel in the house as being as dead as the dodo (Gilman, 1891: 200).More recently, the feminist folk-rock duo The Story used the title in their album The Angel in the HouseCoventry Kersey Dighton Patmore (23 July 1823 – 26 November 1896) was an English poet[1] and critic best known for The Angel in the House, his narrative poem about an ideal happy marriage. The eldest son of author Peter George Patmore, Coventry Patmore was born at Woodford in Essex and was privately educated. He was his father's intimate and constant companion and inherited from him his early literary enthusiasm. It was Coventry's ambition to become an artist. He showed much promise, earning the silver palette of the Society of Arts in 1838. In 1839 he was sent to school in France for six months, where he began to write poetry. On his return, his father planned to publish some of these youthful poems; Coventry, however, had become interested in science and poetry was set aside. At this time Patmore's father was financially embarrassed; and in 1846 Richard Monckton Milnes, 1st Baron Houghton obtained for Coventry the post of printed book supernumary assistant at the British Museum, a post he occupied for nineteen years, devoting his spare time to poetry. In 1847 he married Emily Augusta Andrews, daughter of Dr. Andrews of Camberwell, and by 1851 they had had two sons, Coventry (born 1848) and Tennyson (born 1850). Three daughters followed –Emily (born 1853), Bertha (born 1855) and Gertrude (born 1857), before their last child, a son (Henry John), was born in 1860.At the British Museum Patmore was instrumental in starting the Volunteer Movement in 1852. He wrote an important letter to The Times on the subject, and stirred up much martial enthusiasm among his colleagues. He later returned to writing however, enthused by the success of Alfred Lord Tennyson; and in 1844 he published a small volume of Poems, which was original but uneven. Patmore, distressed at its reception, bought up the remainder of the edition and destroyed it. What upset him most was a cruel review in Blackwood's Magazine; but the enthusiasm of his friends, together with their more constructive criticism, helped foster his talent. The publication of this volume bore immediate fruit in introducing its author to various men of letters, including Dante Gabriel Rossetti, through whom Patmore became known to William Holman Hunt, and was thus drawn into the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, contributing his poem "The Seasons" to The Germ.Major publicationsIn 1853 he republished Tamerton Church Tower, the more successful of his pieces from Poems of 1844, adding several new poems which showed distinct advance, both in conception and treatment; and in the following year (1854) the first part of his best known poem, The Angel in the House appeared.[2][3][4] The Angel in the House is a long narrative and lyric poem, with four sections composed over a period of years: The Betrothed and The Espousals (1856) which eulogize his first wife; followed by Faithful For Ever (1860); and The Victories of Love (1862). The four works were published together in 1863 and have come to symbolise the Victorian feminine ideal[5] –which was not necessarily the ideal amongst feminists of the period.[6]By 1861 the family was living in Elm Cottage, North End, Hampstead. On 5 July 1862[7] Emily died after a lengthy and lingering illness, and shortly afterwards Coventry joined the Roman Catholic church. In 1865 he re-married, his second wife being Marianne Byles, daughter of James Byles of Bowden Hall, Gloucester; a year later he purchased Buxted Hall in Surrey, the history of which he wrote in How I managed my Estate (1886). In 1877 he published The Unknown Eros,[8] which contains his finest poetic work,[9] and in the following year Amelia, his own favourite among his poems, together with an interesting essay on English Metrical Law, appeared. This departure into criticism continued in 1879 with a volume of papers entitled Principle in Art, and again in 1893 with Religio Poetae. His second wife Marianne died in 1880, and in 1881 he married Harriet Robson from Bletchingley in Surrey (born 1840). Their son Francis was born in 1882. In later years he lived at Lymington, where he died in 1896.[10] He was buried in Lymington churchyard.[11]Evaluation[edit]A collected edition of Patmore's poems appeared in two volumes in 1886, with a characteristic preface which might serve as the author's epitaph. "I have written little," it runs; "but it is all my best; I have never spoken when I had nothing to say, nor spared time or labour to make my words true. I have respected posterity; and should there be a posterity which cares for letters, I dare to hope that it will respect me." The sincerity which underlies this statement, combined with a certain lack of humour which peers through its naïveté, points to two of the principal characteristics of Patmore's earlier poetry; characteristics which came to be almost unconsciously merged and harmonized as his style and his intention drew together into unity. His best work is found in the volume of odes called The Unknown Eros, which is full not only of passages but entire poems in which exalted thought is expressed in poetry of the richest and most dignified melody. Spirituality informs his inspiration; the poetry is glowing and alive. The magnificent piece in praise of winter, the solemn and beautiful cadences of "Departure," and the homely but elevated pathos of "The Toys," are in their manner unsurpassed in English poetry. His somewhat reactionary political opinions, which also find expression in his odes, are perhaps a little less inspired, although they can certainly be said to reflect, as do his essays, a serious and very active mind. Patmore is today one of the least known but best-regarded Victorian poets. His son Henry John Patmore (1860–1883) also became a poet.Trivia[edit]Coventry Patmore was caricatured as the unpleasant poet Carleon Anthony in Joseph Conrad's novel Chance (1913).In X-Men: Season 1 Episode 1 Patmore's poem "Farewell", from the collection "The Unknown Eros", is paraphrased by the character Beast, "The faint heart averted many feet and many a tear, in our opposed path to persevere." The character also follows the quote with, "A minor poet for a minor obstacle."。

As for the angle in the house, what they need to do is to submit, to please their husband and try not to lay a burden on them.To conclude, the main differences between the angle in the house and “贤妻良母”exist in their independence and mind. They are just two results of the same thing in different backgrounds. Actually, what women need to do is to be what our families need us to.(368 words)。

The Comparison between ‘the angle in the house’ and the ‘贤妻良母’
Ostensibly, “the angle in the house” seems to be synonymous with the Chinese phrase 贤妻良母.
All of these require her to have a sense of right and wrong and make judgment on her own.
Anotherdifference between them is their contribution in a family.
