while men offer only 5.6 hours."Sons reduce their relative caregiving efforts when they have a sister.while daughters increase theirs when they have a brother.""This suggests that sons pass on parent caregiving responsivities to their sisters."In the UK,the 2011 Census showed that there are now around 6.5 million people with caring responsibilities,a figure which has risen by a tenth in a In fact, you've entered the workplace of Courtney Holmes, the Storybook BarberTwo years ago, Dubuque Iowa held its first annual Back to School Bash, offering needy families a chance to learn about free resources in the community. Holmes agreed to take part in it. He was holding down two jobs at the time one with the city's public works department, the other as a barber. Saturday was his busiest haircutting day, but he chose to devote his time to underprivileged (底层的) kids so they'd look sharp on that first day of classes. But then he had a sudden idea. "The kids should earn their free haircut by having to read a book to me." Holmes said. The idea was so popular that he continued it the first Tuesday of every month for the next two years. Five-to ten-year-old kids would hold a favorite book, settle into the barber chair, and read aloud while Holmes Gave them a haircut. If they had any difficulty, Holmes was there to help. After the haircut, they'd review the book, from the characters and vocabularies to the themes — just like in school, only more fun. "These kids are eager to learn." said Holmes. "And they are able to open their hearts there."Holmes admits he, too, benefits from the activity. "There was a seven-year-old boy who struggled through his book, shuttering (口吃)over words even though he didn't have a stutter, " said Holmes. He had the boy take the book home and practice. This summer, a 900-ton platform was pulled to its current position in Rotterdam's harbor. It will soon be amulti-level home to 40 cows.According to Peter, owner of Beladon, animal welfare was important when they were designing the farm. The finished farm will feature a "cow garden" on the top floor, with artificial trees and bushes to offer shade. A team of robots will be hired, collecting about 800 liters of milk per day. The milk will then be processed on the floor below and sold locally. In their free time. however, cows can walk a ramp(斜坡) to reach the firm ground on the bank. Tasty waste from the city-cut grass, potato skins, etc. - will be their main food source And waste from the farm will be used as fertilizer throughout Rotterdam. The building will attract many visitors, but the real focus is food security. Getting cows on the water is a great step towards creating healthier cities. The idea first came in 2021, while Peter was in New York. When Hurricane Sandy hit, he watched the city's transportation paralyzed (瘫痪的)as Manhattan's roads were filled with water. Trucks for food distribution couldn't move anymore. After two days. there was no fresh food in the stores, Then Peter had a thought: To create a climate-adaptive method of producing fresh, local food, why not harvest right on the water?" You going up and down with the tide, and you don't need the transport."Though it's just one small farm the project can serve as a model for cities across the globe. A building on the water is transportable, so you can move it when necessary.〔1〕What do we know about the dairy farm?A.It is meant to serve local citizens.B.It is out of the question.C.It is located in the deep sea.D.It is owned by the government.〔2〕How is the life of the cows on the dairy farm?A.They feed on the plants grown on the farm.B.They have access to the real land.C.They can wander in the real gardenD.Their waste can be fully used aboard.〔3〕What is the main purpose of Beladon in building the farm?A.To improve the local environment.B.To add a new scenic spot.C.To help ensure food supply.D.To reduce pressure on transport.〔4〕What's the author's attitude to the idea of building such farms?A.Indifferent.B.Worried.C.Doubtful.D.Supportive.4.阅读理解Next time you find yourself tending to your flower garden, you may want to stay quiet. The flowers are listening.According to Israeli scientists, the plants could hear bees approaching and attempt to attract them with sweeter nectar(花蜜). In several experiments, they found that playing audio recordings of buzzing bees around certain flowers would cause the sugar concentration in the nectar to rise by about 20% in less than five minutes. Such a rapid reaction by plants to sound had never previously been reported. Just to compare, the researchers also tried a higher frequency noise-like that made by a mosquito or a bat-and the flowers did not respond. This is not the first time that they've reacted to what they're hearing around them. In a 2021 study. Britain's Royal Horticultural Society found that women's voices helped make plants grow faster. In that experiment, tomato plants were found to grow up to two inches taller when they were tended to by a female gardener. More recently, an Australian study found that some flowers were able to sense noises, such as the flow of water through a pipe. The ability of inanimate(无生命的) objects to hear what' s around them may seem like something out of a science fiction novel, but it's real. What if we told you that a potato chip bag left on the floor of a break room could listen in an office gossip? You'd think we were crazy. right? Think again. Researchers found that as people were talking around the potato chip bag. they were sending teeny-tiny sound vibrations(振动) into the air. Those vibrations then hit inanimate objects around the room. So next time you're at the gardens or in a grocery. be careful with what you say. Something might be listening.〔1〕What did Israeli scientists discover in their research?A.What plants do to sense their environment.B.How plants respond to certain sounds.C.How plants make their nectar sweeter.D.What plants do to protect themselves.〔2〕Why are the two studies mentioned in Paragraph 3?A.To indicate that plants can actually hear what's around them.B.To stress the environment is important to plants' survival.C.To tell us many scientists are interested in plant research.D.To show that Israeli scientists are not the most experienced.〔3〕What does the underlined word" something" in the last paragraph refer to?A.Some plants.B.Sound vibrations.C.Inanimate objects.D.Potato chip bags.〔4〕What's the best title of the text?A.Flowers can actually hear your voicesB.Wildlife has amazing survival skills.C.Bees can talk with garden flowers.D.Chip bags can uncover your secrets.二、任务型阅读5.任务型阅读What to do once you achieve your goal? Here are some basic lessons that can help you once you reach your goal, ________These are principles that millionaire Paul Scolardi has put into practice to good effect.Stay modest. You can celebrate your achievements. But don' t act arrogantly (傲慢低)________While you've made great progress, it's important that you shouldn't look down on those who are in the same situations as you.________The idea is that once you achieve a goal, you want to continue by setting a larger goal than that. For example, if you've gained a high position at your job. an even bigger goal would be to build you own business in that particular industry.Work harder and more wisely. Naturally, if you're working towards a larger goal. you'll need to have more motivation and more confidence, and work even harder. But hard work isn't all that's needed. ________What helped you achieve this goal in the first place? What approach did you take to make all of this happen to you? So, make sure you look back and see what helped you get there.Ignore critics. Whenever you achieve something, there will always be people who will try to drag you down. You're going to get haters or people who don't believe you. ________Take Scolardi for example. Unless he shares his particular story of how he became a millionaire, we don't really know what he went through to get there.A. Set bigger goals.B. You can thus move forward in life.C. Positive thinking is all needed for achievement.D. All we know is that he wasn't a millionaire and now he is.E. It also pays to work more wisely and reflect on your achievements.F. It is usual for them to be indifferent(无动于衷的)when humans calltheir names. Are we sure that they don’t understand human voices at all?A recent study published in the journal of Scientific Reports suggests that we’ve been fooled. Japanese scientists found that cats can recognize their names if their owners regularly use them. In the study, scientists recruited 78 domestic cats. They played recordings of voices of their owners saying five words: the first four words were random nouns thatresembledtheir names while the final word was the cat’s name. Then they observed the cats’ responses, if there were any. Most of cats moved their ears or heads when they heard their names, while they made no response to other words. That suggested, “cats were paying attention to you, what you say and what you do,” John Bradshaw, an expert on human-animal interactions(互动)at the University of Bristol, UK, told The Times. “And cats were just as good as dogs at learning,” she added. In the study, when people called their names, cats often associated (联系) the words with rewards, such as food or play, or with “punishments” such as having a bath or going to the vet . This made cats sensitive (敏感的) to words. After the cats had been called several times, they could respond to the words. But the scientists added that while dogs have evolved(进化)to follow their owners’ orders, cats have not. Although cats appear to be distant, they do have special relationships with their owners.According to study co-author Atsuko Saito, cats have evolved not to show their emotions as a survival method. One example is illness, which they tend to hide because “in the wild, no one can rescue them” and predators (捕食性动物) are more likely to pay attention to them, Saito explained. However, technology may help bridge the communication gap between cats and us. There are now mobile apps available to explain what their meows mean. So, the next time you hear “meow, meow”,your cat may be telling you: “Hi, you haven’t cleaned my litter box recently.”4. What did the recent study find about cats?A. Cats can recognize their names.B. Cats are cleverer than dogs.C. Cats learn more slowly than dogs.D. Cats are willing to follow orders.5. What does the underlined word“resembled”in paragraph 2 probably mean?A. were limited toB. were different fromC. were similar toD. were away from6. Why do cats appear distant to their human owners?A. They associate words with punishments.B. They want to protect themselves from harm.C. They are not sensitive to the human voice.D. They don’t pay much attention to their surroundings.7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. It is difficult to understand cats’ meows.B. Interaction with your cats is very important.C. Cats do have good relationships with their owners.D. We may know cats better with the help of technology.CAs we all know, there are plenty of different parks to visit in theUK. All theme parks inBritainhave cafes, restaurants, picnic areas and gift shops, so you'll still have plenty to see and do when you and the kids have beenon enough rides. There are usually smaller “funfair“ rides and games as well, so younger children won't get bored. Several theme parks also have other attractions next to them, e. g. water parks often open all year round, unlike the theme parks.Whenever you are inBritain, there's likely to be a theme park within one or two hours, drive, bus ride or train journey. Several theme parks even have accommodation(膳宿)so you can stay for a day or two if you want to make a trip into a short holiday.Prices forUKtheme parks vary considerably; some have an entrance price which allows you to go on all the rides, while in others you have to pay for every ride individually. It can also make a difference whether you go during peak time or not. For example, tickets always cost more during school holidays and weekends than they do during the weekdays.Theme parks always get very busy during the summer months, so if you don't like crowds ifs usually a good idea to go earlier or later in the year!If you're thinking of visiting aUKtheme park, it's worth having a look for special offers on tickets. Products such as chocolate bars and cereals sometimes have " buy one get one free" offers on theme park tickets, so keep a look out in shops and supermarkets.8. This passage mainly talks about all the following EXCEPT.______.A. things to doB. prices for theme parksC. rules to obeyD. special offers9. If you go to the theme park during the weekdays, you'll probably.______.A. have to spend moreB. save some moneyC. win a big prizeD. get something free10. Go there when no one is in it.11. The best title for the text would be ______.A. What to Do in the Theme ParkB. Theme Parks in theUKC. Visiting the Theme ParkD. Introduction to Famous Theme ParksDThree years ago, a group of researchers at Cornell University Food and Brand Lab had a guess. They knew that many apples being served to kids as part of the National School Lunch Program were ending up in the trash, almost untouched. But unlike others, they wondered if the reason was more complicated than simply that the kids didn’t want the fruit. They thought the fact that the apples were being whole, rather than sliced (切片的), was doing the fruit no favor. And they wanted to prove this idea. They carried out a study at eight schools and found that fruit consumption (消费) jumped by more than 60 percent when apples were served sliced. They then made a follow-up study at six other schools, which not only showed the same result, but further supported. The whole apple consumption at schools that served sliced apples reduced by about 50 percent than before.Based on these results, it seems that even the simplest forms of inconvenience can influence us. Sliced apples just make more sense for kids. The hardest part is getting kids to start eating fruit, and that’s exactly why sliced apples are the way to go. A child holding a whole apple has to break the skin, eat around the core (果核), and deal with the inconvenience of holding a large fruit. These problems might seem silly or unimportant, but they’re important when you’re missing teeth or have braces (牙箍), as so many kids do.Sometimes what seems like a really small inconvenience actually makes a huge difference.12. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?A. Lots of apples served to kids were wasted.B. Researcher supported the lunch program.C. Apples are not the only acceptable fruit for kids.D. The lunch program was well worth spreading.13. What did researchers want to prove?A. Kid didn’t want the fruits.B. Kids favored the whole apples.C. Kids preferred to the sliced apples.D. Kid’s eating habits influenced fruit consumption.14. According to the study, we can know________.A. 14 schools served sliced fruitsB. kids have problems eating the whole applesC. eating fruits must be healthy for childrenD. few kids are missing teeth or have braces15. What’s the main idea of the passage?A. Form matters more than taste.B. Apples are beneficial to each kid.C. The way fruit is eaten links kids’ growth.D. Inconvenience probably makes a difference.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

People’s opinions about it varies (vary)from one to another. In my opinion,it won’t replace with (\)traditional learning.Firstly,it isn’t suitably (suitable)for students who prefer direct communication with teachers. What’s bad (worse), studying online too long will do harm to students’ eyes. However, it is its flexibility in time and place which (that) benefits teaching and learning. Also, it releases teachers from repeat (repeating) the same contents since the video or audio materials can ∧(be) played repeatedly. So it is a (an) effective addition to traditional learning.Briefly, the combination of distance learning and traditional learning can help students realize their potential when putting (put) into practice.第二节书面表达(满分 25 分)【参考范文】Dear Peter,I am delighted to hear that you are going to participate in the Chinese poetry recitation contest to be held in our school on New Year’s Day. I am writing to offer some advice, which I hope may be of great help to you.Considering that the coming co ntest is related to New Year, you’d better choose some Chinese poetry with the theme of bidding farewell to the old year and welcoming the new year. When it comes to recitation techniques, you are supposed to speak standard Mandarin and pay attention to using proper pronunciation, stress, intonation and speed. In addition, practice makes perfect. Therefore, you can’t practice too many times in advance. By the way, I have collected some classic poems that feature blessings for the new year and attached them to the mail.If there is any problem, don’t hesitate to contact me. Hope you can take my advice into consideration and look forward to your reply.Yours,Li Hua一、各档次评分参考标准1. 其表达未能达成正确句意的,不给分, 如:写出了主语或谓语等关键词,但未能达成符合要点要求、意义正确的句子。
