The title and its meaning
“ Red ” refers to the period of Napoleon the Red Army soldiers, representing the strength of the bourgeoisie(资产阶级), a symbol of revolution. “ Black ” advice personnel in black robes, representatives of feudal society reactionary（保守的） forces, symbolic restoration. The title holds even in the choice of way of life, a symbol of restoration of two opposing camps, two different ideological struggle, highlight the novel 's political significance

It’s just like two extremenesses of red and black. You may reach the peak of red, or fall in the abyss of black.
