Appreciation of pride and prejudice“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife”. This is the first sentence in this book. It’s impressive and classical. The author’s next words are more interesting.”However litter known the feelings or views of such a man be on his first entering neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of th e surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters. ”The undertone is very clear: the foundation of the marriage at that time is not emotion but possession. People always think that Austen was an expert at telling love stories. In fact, the marriage in her book is not the result of love, but the result of economic needs. The marriage between Darcy and Elizabeth reveals the characteristics which constitutes a successful marriage. Elizabeth, the second daughter of Mr Bonnet,is a smart、intelligent and active girl. One of these characteristics is that the feeling cannot be brought on by appearances, and must gradually develop between the two people as they get to know one another. There are five marriages in the book. However, unlike Darcy and Elizabeth, there is a flaw in Bingly and Jane’s relationsh ip. The flaw is that both characters are too gullible and too good-hearted to ever act strongly against external forces that may attempt to separate them.Obviously, Lydia and Wickham‘s marriage is an example of an bad marriage. Their marriage was based on appearances, good looks, and youthful vivacity. Once these qualities can no longer be seenby each other, the once strong relationship will slowly fade away.Although little is told of how Mr. Bennet and Mrs. Bennet got together, it can be inferred by their conversions that their relationship was similar to that of Lydia and Wickham. He is Jane Austen‘s example of a weak father. Austen shows that it is necessary to use good judgement to select a spouse, otherwise the two people will lose respect for each other The last example of a marriage is a of a different nature than the ones mentioned above. The marriage between Mr. Collins and Charlotte is based on economics rather than on love or appearance. It was a common practice during Austen‘s time for women to marry a husband to save herself from spinsterhood or to gain financial security. After reading this book, I can strongly feel that the author ridicule the universal phenomenon in Britain at that time that younger sons and daughters who are used to luxurious lives have no choice but marry a man or woman in possession of a large fortune to continue their comfortable lives. Thus, we can see that getting married is a way to become wealthier, particularly for women without many possessions. It’s ridiculous. We married for love but not for money. So we should pursue the true love based on freedom and equality.

Appreciation of the Poem

Appreciation of the Poem

All overgrown with azure moss and flowers So sweet, the sense faints picturing them! Thou For whose path the Atlantic's level powers
Cleave themselves into chasms, while far below The sea-blooms and the oozy woods which wear The sapless foliage of the ocean, know Thy voice, and suddenly grow gray with fear, And tremble and despoil themselves: oh hear!

In the second canto, the west wind sweeps the residual cloud in the air , and brings out the storm clouds. The second canto of the poem is much more fluid than the first one. Shelley employs the following images : cloud、 rain、and lighting. Angels of rain and lighting is rightly the storm of revolution brought by the west wind, here by employ personification, it express the majestic momentum of the west wind.

Appreciation and MethodsAppreciation is a valuable quality that enriches our lives and broadens our perspectives. It allows us to see the beauty and significance in various aspects of the world around us. However, to truly appreciate, one needs to adopt appropriate methods.Firstly, being observant is crucial. We should trn ourselves to notice the small detls and nuances that often go unnoticed. For example, when looking at a pnting, instead of just giving it a quick glance, we can focus on the brushstrokes, the use of colors, and the emotions conveyed. This level of observation helps us gn a deeper understanding and appreciation of the artist's work.Secondly, having an open mind is essential. We should avoid being judgmental and be willing to embrace different viewpoints and experiences. When encountering a new form of art, a different culture, or an unfamiliar idea, we should approach it with curiosity and a willingness to learn. By doing so, we expand our horizons and are able to appreciate the diversity and plexity of the world.Another important method is to reflect and analyze. After experiencing something, we can take the time to think about what we have witnessed and felt. This reflection helps us extract the essence and meaning, there enhancing our appreciation. For instance, after reading a book, we can consider the themes, the character development, and the author's message, which allows us to appreciate the literary value more profoundly. In conclusion, appreciation is not just a passive act but an active process that requires us to be observant, keep an open mind, and reflect. By using these methods, we can truly appreciate the beauty and significance in life, and gn a greater sense of fulfillment and wisdom.。

Appreciation__of_Shakespeare's_sonnet_18.

Appreciation of Shakespeare's sonnet 18William Shakespeare (1564~1616) born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His surviving works, including some collaboration, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the sixteenth century. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest works in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights .Shakespeare’s reputation did not rise to its present heights until the nineteenth century. The Romantics, in particular, acclaimed Shakespeare's genius, and the Victorians worshipped Shakespeare with a reverence that George Bernard Shaw called "bardolatry". In the twentieth century, his work was repeatedly adopted and rediscovered by new movements in scholarship and performance. His plays remain highly popular today and are constantly studied, performed and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.Of Shakespeare's sonnets in the text, Sonnet 18 is one of the most moving lyric poems that I have ever read. There is great use of imagery within the sonnet. This is not to say that the rest of the poems in the book were not good, but this to me was the best, most interesting, and most beautiful of them.Sonnet 18 deserves its fame because it is one of the most beautifully written verses in the English language. It is memorable not only for the skillful and varied presentation of subject matter ,in which the poet’s feelings reach a level of rapture unseen in the previous sonnets, but also for Shakespeare’s ability to capture the essence of love so cleanly and succinctly. The poet here abandons his quest for theyouth to have a child, but glories in the youth’s beauty instead. It is said that Shakespeare's sonnets is dedicated to two people: the former 126 poems dedicated to a noble youth, and the latter dedicated to a black skin girl. Obvio usly Sonnet 18 is the former, which sparks many debates about Shakespeare’s sexuality. But the nature of the relationship between the two men is highly ambiguous and it is often impossible to tell if Shakespeare is describing platonic love or erotic love. It was also said that his sonnets are just professional literature. However, these are irrelevant, poetry itself is great.Sonnet18 is a lyric poem consisting of 14 lines-three quatrains and one couplet, in an iambic pentameter, restricted to the rhyme scheme ababcdcdefefgg Initially, the poet poses a question, "Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?" This question is comparing the youth to the summer time of the year. It is during this time when the flowers are blooming, trees are full of leaves, the weather is warm, and it is generally thought of as an enjoyable time during the year. The following eleven lines in the poem are also dedicated to similar comparisons between the youth and summer days. The imagery is very essence of simplicity: “wind” and “buds”. In lines 2 and 3, the speaker explains what mainly separates the youth from the summer's day: he is "more lovely and more temperate."Summer's days tend toward extremes: they are sometimes shaken by "rough winds" which happens and is not always as welcoming as the youth. However in line 4, the speaker gives the feeling again that the summer months are often too short by saying, "And summer's lease hath all too short a date."In the summer days, the sun, "the eye of heaven" , often shines "too hot" or too dim."his gold complexion dimmed" , that is there are many hot days during the summer but soon the sun begins to set earlier at night because autumn is approaching. Summer is moving along too quickly for the speaker, its time here needs to be longer, and it also means that the chilling of autumn is coming upon us because the flowers will soon be withering, as "every fair from fair sometime declines." The final portion of the sonnet tells how the youth differs from the summer in various respects. His beauty will beone that lasts forever, "Thy eternal summer shall not fade." and never end or die.In the couplet at the bottom, the speaker explains how the youth's beauty will accomplish this everlasting life unlike a summer. And it is because his beauty is kept alive in this poem, which will last forever. It will live "as long as men can breathe or eyes can see."On the surface, the poem is simply a statement of praise about the beauty of the youth, and perhaps summer to the speaker is sometimes too unpleasant with the extremes of windiness and heat that go along with it. However, the youth in the poem is always mild and temperate by his nature and nothing like the summer at all. Summer is tainted by occasional winds and the eventual change of season, summer mu st always come to an end, but the speaker’s love for the man is eternal. For the speaker, love transcends nature in two ways: The speaker begins by comparing the man’s beauty to summer, but soon the man becomes a force of nature himself. In the line, “thy eternal summer shall not fade,” the man suddenly embodies summer. As a perfect being, he becomes more powerful than the summer’s day to which he was being compared. The language is almost too simple when comparing it to the rest of Shakespeare’s sonnets, i t is not heavy with alliteration or verse, and nearly every line has its own self-contained clause, almost every line ends with some punctuation that affects a pause. But it is this that makes Sonnet18 stand out for the rest in the book. An important theme of the sonnet, throughout much of the poetry in general, is the power of the speaker's poem to defy time and last forever. And so by doing this it is then carrying the beauty of the youth down to future generations and eventually for all of eternity. The youth's "eternal summer" shall not fade precisely because it is embodied in the sonnet: "So long as men can breathe or eyes can see," the speaker writes in the couplet, "So long lives this, and this gives life to thee."With this the speaker is able to accomplish what have done in poetry and that is to give the gift of an eternal life to someone that they believe is special and outshines around them. Perhaps it is because of a physical beauty that the speaker see, but I believe that it is more because of the internal beauty as seen in line 2, "Thou art more lovely and moretemperate", that the youth is deserving to live on forever. The young man to whom the poem is addressed is a muse for Shakespeare’s first 126 sonnets. Although there is some debate about the correct ordering of the texts, the first 126 sonnets are thematically interlinked and demonstrate a progressive narrative. They tell of a romantic affair that becomes more passionate and intense with each sonnet. 1 Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? 我该不该把你比作怡人的夏天?2 Thou art more lovely and more temperate: 你却比她更加可爱更加温情。
