凤凰国际英语托福写作how to write summary 2

Write a thesis statement
Review the sentences you wrote in step 4.
From them, you should be able to create a thesis statement that clearly communicates what the entire text was trying to achieve. If you find that you are not able to do this step, then you should go back and make sure your sentences actually addressed key points.
Reread
Rereading should be active reading. Underline topic sentences and key facts. Label areas that you want to refer to as you write your summary. Also label areas that should be avoided because the details—though they may be interesting—are too specific.
Example
Because of their diversity, seven separate groupings or divisions of algae have been established by botanists.
Key words: seven separate groups/argue/botanists

Reading & ListeningPrior to the rise of the Roman Republic in the sixth century B.C., the Italian Peninsula was dominated by the Etruscan people. For centuries, the Etruscans’ origins have been shrouded in mystery. Yet there is evidence—from both ancient and modern sources—that the Etruscans came from an area in what is the modern-day nation of Turkey. The first evidence linking the Etruscans to ancient Turkey is found in the writings of Herodotus, the man considered “The Father of History.” Herodotus lived in the fifth century B.C., and his most famous work is The Histories. In one section of it, he notes that the Etruscans emigrated from Lydia, which was located in western Turkey. Herodotus wrote that there was a famine in Lydia which lasted for eighteen years. Because of the famine, half of Lydia’s population was sent out of the country. They sailed from the port of Smyrna and eventually landed at Umbria, a region in Italy.Linguists have supported Herodotus’ claims by noticing some similarities between ancient Etruscan and another language found in an inscription on Lemnos, a Greek island nearLydia. Etruscan has never been translated, so its origins are unknown. Perhaps the people of Lydia made the inscription on their way to Umbria. Over time, it is possible that their language evolved and changed into Etruscan. Finally, studies on the DNA of four ancient breeds of cows in Tuscany, Italy, have revealed that they are similar to some cows from Turkey. Only the cows in Tuscany, which was the primary region in which the Etruscans lived, had any similarities to the cows in Turkey. No other cows in Italy were related at all. Thus some conclude that both the Etruscans and their cows arrived in Italy by ships they sailed from Turkey. Etruscans came from an area in what is themodern-day nation of Turkey.

Nowadays, there is much discussion about whether fast economic growth is desirable. Those who criticize economic growth argue that we must slow down. They believe that society is approaching certain limits on growth. These include the fixed supply of natural resources, and the possible negative effects of industry on the natural environment. People who want more economic growth, on the other hand, argue that even at the present growth rate there are still many poor people. Personally, I think the second idea will hold water.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement:When classmates or colleagues communicate about a project in person instead of by e-mail, they will produce better work for the project.【解析】1月25日的托福独立作文题目是一道价值判断类题目。

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement:classmates and partner can communicate with each other face to face to finish the project more better than by sending e-mail.The advancement of technology has introduced countless forms of communication. Cell phones, text messaging and programs like Twitter make it easy to talk with anybody, anywhere. Althoughtechnology has made communicating very easy, these forms sometimes are too detached and can lead to many misunderstandings. I still think the best way to have a conversation with someone is face to face.Instant messaging or text messaging are convenient forms of communication, but it is hard to discuss difficult topics over text or instant message. The style of language is so abbreviated that it is hard to tell a person's tone or mood. For example,I was once chatting with my mother and I responded “OK” when she asked me a very serious question. I thought my response was fine, but the next day my mother called me very upset. She thought I was angry with her and had been worrying all day about how to talk to me. If we had been talking on the phone, she would have been able to hear that I was not angry.E-mail is also another form of communication that is useful, but can be troublesome if you are discussing a difficult topic. Sometimes when people are angry, they write a quick and nasty e-mail. This has gotten a lot of people in trouble with their teachers or bosses. One time,my classmate was really upset about a grade she received on a test. She was so upset about it that she sent a very rude e-mail to the teacher. After about an hour, she calmed down and realized she had made a mistake. If she had called or gone to talk to the teacher about the test, she probably would not have used such angry language. Unfortunately,it is too easy to send an e-mail without thinking. The teacher was not pleased with her e-mail,and gave her a week's detention.Talking with somebody on the phone,or face to face,is the best way to solve a problem. When you are speaking with somebody, you can hear the mood in his voice,or see the expression on his face. Using these verbal and physical cues, you can understand his meaning more clearly. Conversations such as politics and relationships are most successful if done over the phone or face to face. This is why people do not propose marriage through e-mail and politicians do not write laws using text messaging. Using the phone also keeps you from getting into trouble by miscommunication or misunderstanding.2015年1月25日托福写作真题解析下载:/20150126/344980.html?seo=wenku1279。

Furthermore, knowing a variety of news from all around the world assist us to enrich our knowledge and open our minds. Take my cousin as an example. She is an out-going girl and is very popular at school. Nevertheless, she was not like that 3 years ago. She used to be a very pathetic girl who always worried about things happened around her. Under the professor’s guide, she began to read more news and learn more events that take place in other cities, in quite different countries. She finally recognized that there are a lot of things worth noticing all round the world. With these pieces of updated information, she became talkative and she is now very willing to share everything she knows with others, which makes her very welcomed at school.
Besides, it is helpful that we can make friends at an entirely unfamiliar occasion. If we only pay attention to those events which have strong relationships with us, obviously, making new friends is in a hardship. With no similar topics goes, people are just like block their hearts to the new ones and new worlds, which makes the communication less crucial. Therefore, it does harm to the whole society either.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People should spend more time interacting with nature. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

A contentious issue in American politics is whether or not to raise the gasoline tax. Many people support it because they believe it will help the economy. However, their beliefs are erroneous since raising the gas tax would definitely have negative effects on the economy. To begin with, an increase in the gas tax would disrupt the economy. Many people rely upon their cars to get to work. By raising the gas tax just a few percentage points, the government would be making people’s commutes to work cost more. In many cases, they cannot afford this extra expense. In addition, if people are spending more money on gasoline, then they will spend less money purchasing other products. Since the American economy runs on consumer spending, a decrease in spending could greatly damage the economy. Second of all, an increase in the gasoline tax would hurt those with low incomes. Naturally, it would make their gasoline more expensive, and these people simply do not have the money they would need to pay the tax. Also, since many people with low incomes live in areas with no public transportation, they might not be able to afford to go out or even make it to their workplaces. At best, they would suffer increased financial hardship.

It is as clear as crystal that millions of youngsters coming from poverty-stricken families cannot afford the high expenses of college education. However, some people argue that all the cost of their university education should be paid by individual students. I partly side with the above statement and will endeavor to exemplify my opinion that it is not universally feasible for every undergraduate to finance their studies. Still, this essay aims to explore how to assist those needy college students to accomplish their college education.

Young people often feel the pressure from those of the same age around them. For example, youngsters may learn to smoke if they are surrounded by young smokers even though they are not aware why they smoke. This practice is defined as peer pressure, which is not uncommon among the young. As for advantages and disadvantages caused by this phenomenon, it should be viewed from wider perspectives.

Which one do you prefer, to solve problems on your own experience and kn owledge, or to ask others for advice? As knowledge and experience serve as twim towers in problem-solving, one is often presented with two major paths that pave the way for final fulfillment, ei tther to wrack his brain, just like what happened to Neuton, siiting for many ye ars under an apple tree and eventually figuring out ond of the greatest universal r ules that govern the whole globe, or to seek for others’ widsom through their a dvice, just as in the case of Benjinin Franklin, gathering great minds under one roof and then establishing a most world-renown libray. Both ways work. When a p ractical goal is involved, however, Benjimin Franklin may best be regareded as a role model in this respect and asking people for advice often turn out to be the prime alternative.Experience and knowledge borrowed or learned from others’ advice contrib ute greatly to effectiveness and effeciency for a goal-accomplishment. Not all exp erience and knowledge related to problem-solving can be obtained by personal ef fort alone due to limitations of mind and capabilities of each individual. A single t hought in someone’s mind is, more often than not, far less shining compared with group’s wisdom. That explains the famous old saying that one sees further when standing upon the shoulders’ of past great giants; that explains why a grea t leader is always with greater minds; that also explains why teamwork in corperati on is highly emphasized in the 21st century. Brainstorm and exchange of ideas bet ween different thoughts never fail to enhance capabilities of each individula involv ed, a team, a company, an institution, a country, or even the entire global village.Asking others’ advice instead of getting everything done on one’s own pr omotes democracy and communication too. In terms of democracy, it is necessa ry to give others rights and chances to speak since the problem may concern the m in different ways, and their saying in turn reflects our respect toward freedomof speech as well as their wisdom. In terms of communication, idea exchange so metimes focuses more than solutions, and hereby better mutual understanding about perspectives, principles, praticalities and personalities of each other.Admittely turning to others for help and suggestion by no means refers to ab solute and irresponsible dependence. Consideration upon different thoughts and i deas broadens our mind, enlarges our vision, furthers understanding, enhanc es more effective and efficient brainstorm, and stresses mutual respect in groups and communities, which undoubtedly gives rise to better, if not the best soluti ons. As is paraphrased from John F Kenedy, brainstormed, there is little we can not do while divided, there is little we can do.。

Dressed in aprons (围裙) and headscarves, they wait at both towns’starting lines. Each woman holds a frying pan with one pancake inside. At the signal, the women flip (轻抛) pancakes and they’re off! This “pancake racing” tradition is said to have started on Shrove Tuesday, 1445, in Olney. Shrove Tuesday is the day beforethe Christian season of Lent (大斋戒) begins. During Lent, many people decide to give up sugary or fatty foods.Legend says that in 1445, an Olney woman was making pancakes to use up some of her sugar and cooking fats before Lent. She lost track of time and suddenly heard the church bells ring, signaling the beginning of the Shrove Tuesday service. Realizing that she was going to be late for church, she raced out the door still wearing her apron and headscarf and holding her frying pan with a pancake in it. In the following years, the woman’s neighbors imitated her dash to church, and pancake racing was born. The rules are simple. Racers must wear the traditional headscarf and apron. They must flip their pancakes twice - once before starting and once after crossing the finish line. After the race, there are Shrove Tuesday church services. Then Liberal and Olney connect through a video call to compare race times and declare a winner. In both towns, the races have grown into larger festivals. Olney’s festival is an all-day event starting with a big pancake breakfast. Liberal’s festival lasts four days and includes a parade, a talent show, and contests that feature eating and flipping pancakes. Although the women’s race is still the main event, both towns now hold additional races for boys and girls of all ages.4. How did pancake racing start?A. A woman in Olney created it.B. First, the making of paper requires the loss of many millions of trees each year. And worldwide use of paper is expected to double in the next 40 years. Clearly, the planet cannot stand such a high rate of forest loss. The second great problem with paper is what happens once it is no longer useful. A large amount of wastepaper ends up in landfills, where it can produce harmful gases and finally contribute to global climate change. One simple solution can greatly reduce both of these problems: paper recycling. Instead of cutting down trees, recycle existing paper to feed the paper-making process.Paper is mainly made from cellulose (纤维素),which can be used repeatedly in papermaking. Unfortunately, it also means that paper waste takes a surprisingly long time to break down in landfills. So far, trees are the onlysource(来源) of cellulose that can fill the great demand for paper products. Therefore, recycling paper is simply one of the best ways to save trees. Thanks to advances in processing, recycled paper need not be the dark-color1 edstuff many of us are familiar with. It now can offer the same print performance as non-recycled paper.Effective recycling requires a continuous effort from everyone at all levels of society. The way to begin is with education and understanding. Once enough people realize the need for recycling, more effective recycling systems can be developed. The need is real. The massive loss of trees affects everybody on earth. Everyone should do their part to recycle paper and encourage government and industry to do the same. The world will be a better place for it!8. What can we infer from the text?A. The use of recycled paper will double in 40 years.B. Recycling paper helps relieve global climate change.C. Wastepaper can easily break down in landfills.D. There are not enough landfills for wastepaper.9. What makes recycled paper more acceptable?A. The great demand of trees.B. The low processing cost.C. Its dark-color1 ed feature.D. Its improved print performance.10. What does the author propose?A. Punishing the act of cutting trees.B. Recycling paper.C. Improving recycling system.D. Promoting paper industry.11. How is the text mainly developed?A. By analyzing causes and effects.B. By offering research plans and data.C. By discussing problems and solutions.D. By comparing strengths and weaknesses.DBefore moving to Stokholm, I did my research on Sweden and was confident about my move. However, I quickly realized on my first day that so much of what I learnedwas so very wrong. There are many things that a Google search cannot show about Sweden. The first is fika. A fika is taking a break from whatever you are doing to enjoy a coffee with friends. Swedes value community highly so it makes sense that they would like to set aside time each day to reconnect with others. Fika is a great time to meet new people as well as catch up with friends.I grew up in the American South where everyone is very friendly. I found that little things like not being askedmy life story at the coffee shop by the waiter upset me. However, Swedish people are not rude. Instead, they practice being logom, which means “just enough”.The winters can be very dark and cold, so the Swedish people do not take any sunny day for granted. Since the weather has been fine, I have found myself walking a lot around Stockholm. Often it is easiest to get from place to place by walking, which allows you to see so much of the city and enjoy the fresh air. Though it has been very tiring to get used to, it also has made me feel better about all of the kardemummabullar that I have been eating!I think it is important for students who want to study abroad to know that it is hard to move to countries no matter how “similar” you may think they may be. You have to jump in with both feet and be patient with yourself as well as others. As long as you keep an open mind and are willing to learn, you will have a great experience.12. What do we know about fika?A. It is a waste of time.B. It is a way to balance life and work.C. It is all about drinking coffee.D. It is a Swedish social tradition.13. What does the author think of Swedish people?A. They are friendly.B. They seem a bit cold.C. They appear really rude.D. They are interested in other's life.14. Why does the author like walking?A. It is fun and not very tiring.B. It is good exercise on cold days.C It allows her to enjoy sunny days. D. It gives her the chance to eat the local food.15. What's the author's advice for students going abroad?A. Be confident.B. Be careful.C. Be open- minded.D. Be hard- working.

Second, many universities are finding themselves short of cash these days. This is particularly true of state universities, which often depend upon the state for the majority of their budgets. Unfortunately, many states are cutting general funding to schools. Most particularly hard hit are the funds for the general management of the university. While not necessarily a glamorous job, it is crucial to the well-being of the school. Without sufficient general management funds, many schools would be facing serious problems, so they need to compensate for the lost funds in other ways. It is therefore obvious why schools are increasing tuition every year

Nowadays, many universities are raising their students’ tuition. In some cases, the raises are quite substantial. While many students are not pleased with these increase, there are some lБайду номын сангаасgitimate reasons for the hikes. First, universities are constantly striving to upgrade their educational quality. Since fewer people are attending college these days, schools must fight for all the students they can get. One ideal way to attract students is to ensure that the school provides them with an outstanding education. Also, by increasing the school’s academic rank, the school will attract more students and better ones. Since it costs money to enhance the quality of education, the school’s budget must increase. Therefore, tuition must also go up.
