TPO 10Question 5:1. Student A:Is there a problem with the electricity?2. Student B:Yeah, this storm’s smacked up power all over the city. And they aresaying it might be several hours before we have electricity again.3. Student A:Oh no! I have a history paper due tomorrow, and I’ve been writing iton my laptop computer and the battery is running low. I’m going to needelectricity soon.4. Student B:Well, you know, Jefferson City still got electricity, and there is alibrary there where you can plug in your laptop. You could go over there andwork on your paper. It’s only about a 20-minute drive.5. Student A:That’s a good idea. Of course I’d have to pack up all my stuff and itis raining outside.6. Student B:Yeah, that’s true. Well, why don’t you just ask the professor for anextension? You know, tomorrow when you go to class, just ask him if he’d giveyou an extra day to get the paper done. I’m pretty sure he’d agree, you know, with this storm and all.7. Student A:Yeah, that’d sure be a lot easier. But then he did tell us when hegave us the assignment that he wouldn’t grant any extensions.8. Student B:You don’t think he’d grant an extension in this case?9. Student A:I’m not sure. It’s a little risky. He might just say that we shouldn’thave waited until the last minute.10. Student B:Yeah, but maybe if other students had the same problem, you might beable to convince him.11. Student A:Yeah, I mean it’s not our fault the electricity went out, hm... The woman needs electricity immediately to finishher paper.

首先是financial difficulties,学生可能会因为经济窘迫而产生一些十分矛盾的事情,比如在2020年12月12日的托福口语task5中的围绕的焦点就是the woman decided to have a part-time in summer vacation and rented a housenear here workplace. However, in this way, she would waste a whole summer’s fee on her dormitory.其次,就是scheduling conflicts即日程安排问题,学生可能已经安排了去做一件事,但是此时出现了学生非常想去做的另一件事,两件事在日程安排上出现了冲突,比如在2020 年4月24日的托福口语tak5考试中,对话的双方就是围绕着女士long to listen to a professor’s speech lecture和has to work in the library at the same time展开的。

比如2020年9月26日的托福口语task5就是围绕着the man’s computer crashed while he was working on his history paper which was due the next day而展开的。

What’s wrong?/ Is there anything wrong? /What happened?/ How is it going?/What’s the matter?

托福TPO6⼝语task5题⽬ Listening Part: Now listen to a conversation between a professor and the student. (man) Hi, Sara, to what do I owe this pleasure of this office visit? (woman) It’s my study group, Professor Wilson. We are not getting much studying done, and, you know, none of us did very well on your last quiz. (man) Hmmm, what’s the problem? (woman) Well, we’ve all become good friends and we joke around a lot instead of studying. (man) Hmmm. Sara, let me ask you this. When do you meet? (woman) Every Friday afternoon. (man) Have you thought about changing to another day? By the time Friday afternoon rolls around, all of you are probably exhausted and all you want to do was relax and unwind. It’s hard to stay focused at the very end of the week. (woman) Good point, although things have gotten so out of hand that I’m not sure changing days would help. And we’d lose one or two people if we change days, Friday afternoon is the only time everyone’s available, but it’s worth considering. (man) OK. But just a second, another possibility is, does your group have a leader? (woman) No? (man) Well, if you h ad a leader that would help enormously. Someone to set an agenda in advance, email it to everyone before the meeting and then make sure when you meet that you stay focused on your goals. And since you’ve seemed to be concerned enough about the problem to have come see me, I think that someone might be you. (woman) I guess I can take on that role. But it sounds like work. (man) You don’t have to do it for the whole semester, Sara. You can start if off and then, perhaps, someone else can take over. 托福TPO6⼝语task5题⽬ Question: The professor proposes two solutions to the problem the woman describes. Briefly summarize the problem then state which solution you recommend and explain why. 1. Listening key (1.1) Problem: people joke around instead of studying during study meeting (1.2) Solution 1: change the meeting time (1.2.1) Pro: everyone’s exhausted on the weekend, they can’t concentrate with a week of hard work wearing them off (1.2.2) Con: lose one or two people (1.3) Solution 2: appoint a team leader, the woman can be it first (1.3.1) Pro: set an agenda before, email it to all members, make sure the discussion stays on topic (1.3.2) Con: too much work 托福TPO6⼝语task5 范⽂: The woman’s problem is that everyone jokes around and talks a lot during study meetings instead of studying. She’s got two possible solutions, the first is to change the study meeting from Friday afternoon to some other time. The second solution is to appoint a leader to the group. I think it’d better if she bite the bullet and take on the role of leader. First of all, it is very important for everyone to study during a study meeting or it’s a waste of time. The presence of a leader can keep the discussion on topic. Second, she mentions that Friday night is when everyone is free to meet, so changing the meeting schedule would mess things up for many group members. 托福TPO6⼝语task6题⽬ Listening Part: Now listen to part of a talk in an Education class. (female professor) One of the hardest parts of teaching is keeping your students’ attention. Now, the key to doing this is understanding the concept of attention. Basically, there are two types of attention. The first type is active, active attention is voluntary. It’s when you intentionally make yourself focus on something. And since it requires effort, it’s hard to keep up for long a time. OK, so, um, let’s say you are teaching a Biology class. And today’s topic is frogs. All right? You’re standing in front of the room lecturing: a frog is a type of animal known as an amphibian…, well, this isn’t necessarily going to keep the students’ interest. But most of them will force themselves to pay active attention to your lecture. But it’s only a matter of time before they get distracted. Now, the other type of attention is passive attention, when it’s involuntary. Passive attention requires no effort because it happens naturally. If something is really interesting students don’t have to force themselves to pay attention to it. They do it without even thinking about it. So back to our Biology lecture, you start talking about frogs and then you pull a live frog out of your briefcase. You’re describing it while holding it up. Show the students how long its legs are, and how they’re used for jumping, for example. Then maybe even let the frog jump around a bit on the desk or the floor. In this case, by doing something unexpected, something more engaging, you can tap into their passive attention. And it can last much longer than active attention. As long as the frog is still there your students will be interested. 托福TPO6⼝语task6题⽬ Question: Using points and examples from the talk, explain the difference between active and passive attention. Listening key (1.1) Main idea: active and passive attention (1.2) Active attention: forced (1.2.1) Example: (1.2.1.1) A teacher teaches a class by only reading from textbooks (1.2.1.2) Students will get bored, yet they’d still try to focus (1.2.1.3) But they will get distracted soon because this attention is forced (1.3) Passive attention: happens naturally (1.3.1) Example: (1.3.1.1) A teacher teaches with a live frog, let it jump around a bit (1.3.1.2) Students get interested in what’s happening, their concentration happens naturally (1.3.1.3) As long as the frog is on the table, students will have no problem focusing on the lecture 托福TPO6⼝语task6 范⽂: The professor talks about two kinds of attention in the lecture. The first type is active attention which is voluntary. For example, if a biology teacher teaches a class by only reading from a textbook, the class can become fairly boring. Most students would force themselves to focus, but sooner or later, the students will be distracted. The second type of attention is passive attention, let’s say instead of reading from a textbook, the teacher pulls a live frog out of his bag, then the lecture becomes really interesting. As long as the frog is on the table, the students will be able to focus on the lecture.。

Listen to part of a lecture in an environmental science class. OK, so what are some of the most effective public policies when it comes to fighting environmental problems? There are a lot of different approaches but…this is, in my opinion, too often we underestimate how much can be accomplished just by appealing to people’s sense of moral duty, to their civic duty. In other words, getting people to voluntarily stop polluting because, well just because it’s the right thing to do. These programs that try to get people to voluntarily stop doing things that hurt the environment are called moral suasion. Now, obviously this type of approach won’t be effective for all problems but it will solve some. For some environmental concerns, moral suasion has been very effective. The classic case is, well, Smokey the Bear. Now, don’t laugh. When the forest service first came out with the “Smokey the Bear” campaign, it may have seemed a little childish. You remember the character, the bear dressed like a foreign stranger, saying things like please don’t hurt my animal friends or please don’t start forest fires. Well, it worked. It worked because it made people more sensitive to these problems. This “Smokey the Bear” campaign, this kind of campaign in general raises people’s awareness of the problem and appeals to their sense of moral duty, to do the right thing. Another good example of this is recycling. In the early days of recycling, local community promoted these voluntary efforts. They make people aware of the need to reduce the amount of garbage by recycling. They provided neighborhoods with containers to put their glass and newspapers in instead of throwing them away. Some people started doing it, and others followed. Maybe people thought I have this recycling container, my neighbors doing it, I should do it too. Nowadays, of course, everyone recycles. The point is, in order to get people to really do it, to get high rates of compliance, the program heavily relied on moral suasion. 6 What is a policy of moral suasion? Use the Smokey the Bear and recycling campaigns to explain how it works. Preparation Time: 20 Seconds Response Time: 60 Seconds In the lecture, the professor talks about the moral suasion, which means tryingto get people to stop polluting the environment by appealing to their moral duties. He then uses two examples to better illustrate this. The first example is the “Smokey the Bear” campaign. A character dressed up like a foreign stranger always says “please don’t hurt my animal friends” or “please don’t start a forest fire”. Since this bear looks a little bit childish and cute, people then won’t do harm to the environment because it reminds them of environmental issues and that they should do the right thing to protect the environment. The second example is recycling. The community first promoted voluntary efforts and increased people’s awareness to reduce the amount of the garbage which could be recycled. And then they provided people with containers where they could put their glass and newspaper. At first, a part of people started doing this. Little by little, others followed the herd. And now all the people recycle garbage voluntarily. In short, with these two examples, the professor explains what is meant by moral suasion.

例如,考生会听到:“I’ve got a problem”、“I’d like to…but…”

而在讨论解决方案时,也会出现如“If I were you, I would…”、“What you should do is…”及“Why not try…”

Student A: Hi, good morning! Could you help me with something?Student B: Uh…maybe. What’s up?Student A: Well, I’m a first year student.Student B: Everything going okay?Student A: Actually no…um…this is a little embarrassing. I think I left my class schedule back in my dorm.Student B: Um…not a good thing to do on the first day of classes.Student A: Yeah… so I’m not sure where my class is. I think I remember it was supposed to be here in Smith Hall.Student B: There is a computer for student use in the student center. You can go over there, look it up and check the room number. But…you’d have to hurry.Student A: Hm… that’s not a bad idea. I could check m y schedule for the whole rest of the day at the same time. I don’t know where any of my other classes are either, but I don’t wanna be late, make a bad impression with the professor on the first day. It’s actually my very first class—Introduction to Psychology.Student B: Psychology? Oh! Okay, you’re definitely in the right building. And if it’s Introduction to Psychology, it’s gonna be a big class, in which case it probably meets in a big lecture hall. There are only three lecture halls in the building, one on every floor. Just check each floor till you find yours. There is an elevator, so you should be able to move fast.Student A: Yeah, but I don’t know what the professor looks like or anything. How will I know whether it’s my class or not? It’d be sort of embarrassing, sticking my head into each lecture hall, asking if I was in the right place.Student B: Well…you might luck out and find it the first time.

1. General Description of Main Problem2. Two Possible Solutions3. Personal Opinion / Choice4.

I sprained it last weekend and I am kind of upset about it because I’m supposed to play th e violin in my string quartet's big concert next week. We’ve been practicing for weeks and we’ve already sold a bunch of tickets.(man) Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. What are you gonna do?(woman) Well, I was thinking about trying to play anyway, I mean, I r eally don’t want to let the other three group members down. Plus the doctor said my wrist should be feeling better by then.(man) Oh, OK, so problem solved, right?(woman) Not exactly. I’m worried I’m gonna be out of practice, like I haven’t been able to p lay the violin since I sprained my wrist. What if I don’t play well? I’d make the rest of the group sound bad.(man) Why don’t you get somebody else to take your place?(woman) Well, there’s only one other person I know who could do it and that’s Jim. He’s a great violinist and I’m sure he’d say yes. The thing is he’s not very reliable. I mean, I’min the orchestra with him and he’s always showing up late for rehearsals.(man) Oh, so you’re not sure you can depend on him.(woman) Exactly, and we have less than a week left to rehearse for the concert. What drives us to participate in certain activities, to buy a certain car or even to choose a certain career? In other words, what motivates us to do what we do?Well, in studies of motivation, psychologists distinguish between two very different types, our reasons for doing something, our motivations can be extrinsic, in other words, based on some kind of external reward like praise or money. Or they can be intrinsic, meaning we engage in the activity because it pleases us internally. Both create strong forces that lead us to behave in certain ways. However, intrinsic motivation is generally considered to be more long-lasting than the other. As I said, extrinsic motivation is external. It’s the desire to behave in a certain way in order to obtain some kind of external reward. A child, for example, who regularly does small jobs around the house, does them not because she enjoys taking out the garbage or doing the dishes but because she knows if she does these things she’ll be given a small amount of money for doing them. But how motivated would the child be to continue doing the work if her parents suddenly stop giving her money for it?With intrinsic, or internal motivation, we want to do something because we enjoy it, or get us a sense of accomplishment from it. Most people who are internallymotivated get pleasure from the activity. So they just feel good about doing it. For example, I go to the gym several times a week.I don’t go because I’m training for a marathon or anything, I just enjoy it. I have more energy after I exercise and I know i t’s good for my health. So it makes me feel good about myself. And that’s what’s kept me going there for the past five years. Using points and examples from the talk, explain the two types of motivation. Scientists have learned that 5 month-old babies can add. Since the evidence is indirect, they devise an experiment to prove this. In the experiment, the researchers first show the baby a doll on the table, and lower a screen to hide the doll, but the baby still knows it is there. Then, they obviously add another doll behind the screen. However, after that they secretly take away one of the dolls. So when they raise the screen back up, there is only one doll there. When the researchers observed the babys eye movement that they had recorded during the experiment, they found that the baby stared when it saw only one doll, since babies usually stareat what surprises them. We can conclude the baby is surprised because the baby knew that one plus one equals two, and had expected two dolls when it saw only one. Now listen to part of a lecture in a psychology class. The professor is discussing the mathematical capabilities of babies.(female professor)Scientists have learned some interesting things about the intellectual abilities of babies. They say theres evidence that babies as young as five months old can do basic arithmetic, that they can add. Scientists think babies know one plus one equals two and not one. The evidence is indirect because obviously you cant ask a five-month old baby to add up some numbers for you.So they devised an experiment where, um, in this experiment a baby is shown a doll on a table. Ok, so the baby looks at the doll. Then the researcher lowers a screen in front of the doll, so now the doll is hidden behind the screen. But the baby has already seen the doll and, so, knows its there.Well, then the researcher takes a second doll and very obviously places it behind the screen with the first one. Ok, so now you have two dolls behind the screen, right? Well, no, cause what the researcher did was they secretly took away one of the dolls. And then when they raised the screen back up, the baby, well, it expects to see two dolls, right? But theres only one there! And guess what? The baby surprised! It expects two but it only sees one. How could the researchers tell that the baby surprised? Well, they recorded the babys eye movement on camera. And we know that when a baby is surprised by something, a loud noise or an unexpected flash of light maybe, it stares at where the noise or light is coming from. And thats what the babies in the experiment did. They stared, cause the babies know if you add one doll and one doll, you should have two dolls. So when it sees one doll, then it stares because its surprised.TPO53托福口语Task6满分范文:Food spoilage is caused by bacteria and the two key factors to prevent food from going bad is temperature and moisture. First, controlling the temperature can slow down thegrowth of bacteria, so food can be stored for longer time in cooler environment. For example, the fresh fish can be kept for months if being frozen, but they will go bad very quickly under the sun in warm days. Because the low temperature drastically slows down the growth of bacteria. Plus, moisture is another factor to control. Food high in water content will go bad more quickly, because the moisture offers the bacteria necessary supplies to grow. For example, the liquid milk spoils quickly than the powered milk. Because the water has been removed from the powered milk, and without moisture, bacteria cant grow. Question:Using points and examples from the lecture, explain two adaptations that help polar bears survive in their Arctic environment.1、题目。

I have lots of other school work to deal with.(man) Oh! Or you could have someone else to receive the award for you. I mean, go in your place and accept on your behalf.(woman) Maybe, I’ll still get the award and the money that way.(man) Oooh, you won money too?(woman) Yeah, pretty cool, huh? But an yways, my parents were really looking forward to coming and seeing me on stage shaking hands with the Institute’s president Knoff. There are two possiblesolutions, the first is to skip the exam and write a five page paper instead. Or she can find someone to receive the award for her. I think the first solution is better. First, she did mention in the conversation that she has plenty of ideas, and she’s confident she’ll be able t o do a good job. Also, if she does not attend the ceremony, her parents are going to be very disappointed because they can’t see her on stage. Listening Part:Now listen to part of a lecture in a Psychology class. The professor is discussingadvertising strategies.Professor (female)In advertising various strategies are used to persuade people to buy products. In order to sell more products, advertisers will often try to make us believe that a product will meet our needs or desires perfectl y, even if it’s not true. The strategies that they use can be subtle, friendly forms of persuasion that are sometimes hard to recognize. In a lot of ads, repetition is a key strategy. Research shows that repeated exposure to a message, even something meaningless or untrue, is enough to make people accept it or see it in a positive light. You’ve all seen the car commercials on TV like, uh, the one that refers to its roomy cars over and over again. You know which one I mean. This guy is driving around and keeps stopping to pick up different people. He picks up three or four people. And each time, the narrator says, “Plenty of room for friends, plenty of room for family, plenty of room for everybody.” The same message is repeated several times in the course of the commercial. Now the car, the car actually looks kind of small, it’s not a big car at all,but you get the sense that it’s pretty spacious. You’d think the viewer would reach the logical conclusion that the slogan miss-represents the product, instead, what usually happens is that when the statement "plenty of room" is repeated often enough, people are actually convinced it’s true.Um, another strategy they use is to get a celebrity to advertise a product. It turns out that we’re more likely to accept an advertisement claim made by somebody famous, a person we admire and find appealing. We tend to think they’re trustworthy. So, uh, you might have a car commercial that features a well-known race car driver. Now, it may not be a very fast car, uh, it could even be an inexpensive vehicle with a low performance rating. But if a popular race car driver is shown driving it and saying, “I like my cars fast!” Then people would believe the car is impressive with its speed. Using the examples from the talk, explain how persuasive strategies are used in advertising. 1. Listening keys(1.1) Main idea: two persuasion strategies that are used in advertising(1.2) First: repetition(1.2.1) Example: car ad, someone drives around, narrator keeps saying “plenty of room for everyone”.The audience will think the car is big although it’s small(1.3) Second: using celebraties(1.3.1) Example: car ad, famous race car driver drives a slow car, people will think the car is pretty fast because people find famous people trustworthy and appealing. The professor talks about two strategies that are used in TV ads that will make them more convincing. One strategy is repetition, when people hear something often enough, the message becomes positive. Take a car ad for example, the narrator says “plenty of room for everyone” for many times, although the car is small, eventually people will start to think that the car is fairly big. The second strategy is using a celebrity to advertise a product because people tend to believe someone famous. A race car driver who says “I like my car fast!” might actually make people think the car in the ad to be pretty fast, because we find them trustworthy.。

Listening Part:Listen to a conversation between two students.(man) Susan, what happened to your arm?(woman) It’s my wrist, actually. I sprained it last weekend and I am kind of upset about it because I’m supposed to play the violin in my string quartet's big conc ert next week. We’ve been practicing for weeks and we’ve already sold a bunch of tickets.(man) Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. What are you gonna do?(woman) Well, I was thinking about trying to play anyway, I mean, I really don’t want to let the other three group members down. Plus the doctor said my wrist should be feeling better by then.(man) Oh, OK, so problem solved, right?(woman) Not exactly. I’m worried I’m gonna be out of practice, like I haven’t been able to play the violin since I sprained my wrist. I mean, I’m in the orchestra with him and he’s always showing up late for rehearsals.(man) Oh, so you’re not sure you can depend on him.(woman) Exactly, and we have less than a week left to rehearse for the concert. We’d really need him to show up on time for all our rehearsals. Question:Briefly summarize the woman’s problem then state which solution you would recommend.Explain the reasons for your recommendation. 1. There are two possible solutions, the first one is to try to play anyway. The other solution is to get Jim to replace her and play in the concert. I think the first is better, because that way she won’t let the other group members down, and the doctor said her wrist should be feeling better by then. Also, she says in the conversation that Jim is not reliable. If he’s always late for the rehearsals, that’llc ompromise the whole performance. And that’s unfair to the other group members who have been practicing for weeks. Listening Part:Now listen to part of a lecture in a psychology class.Professor (female) Why do we do the things we d o? What drives us to participate in certain activities, to buy a certain car or even to choose a certain career?
