ing
1. Conversation One
Carl and Steve are talking about how to make business phone calls effectively.
Carl: It seems that many businesses, no matter large or small, regard the telephone as their important link with their customers. Steve: Right. Because a telephone call is very often the first contact a potential customer has with a business; the attitude that the caller takes towards the company is often directly related to the tone of a first phone call. Carl: I see. I know that the telephone is also used for day-to-day running of virtually every business, but can you tell me in details? Steve: Orders are taken, progress is checked, suppliers are contacted, advice is requested and given, and complaints are heard—all over the telephone.
Carl: Well, then what are the advantages do you think using the telephone for company business has over writing letters? Steve: There are at least two advantages: the telephone is less expensive; and the telephone projects a live voice, a real person, who can both listen and respond to a situation. Carl: What if that live voice projects the wrong image or attitude? Hundreds or even millions of dollars of business might be lost. Steve: That’s quite possible. So it is the potential problem that telephone communication poses. Carl: So establishing a positive telephone image is very important. Steve: That's right. You can probably recall that one company is terribly cold and impersonal, and hopefully you can also remember talking to someone whom made you feel as if you and your problem were the only concern he or she had for the day. Carl: Right. You do have some ideas about certain business and professional persons, even though your only contact with them has been over the phone.
