2022-2023学年上海市复旦大学附属中学高二下学期期末考试英语试题1. Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use ONE word that best fits each blank.Coping With the Sunday ScariesA few years ago, I was in the kitchen of a friend’s house preparing a meal. When we all sat down to eat, my friend’s wife wolfed down her supper and then disappeared into another room to do some work. He smiled and said, “Sunday nights are the new Monday mornings around here.”I was surprised at the time. Now, I find myself 1 (behave) in exactly the same manner. Every time I open up my calendar on Sunday evening, a subtle sense of dread comes over me. I feel as 2 I am behind before the week has even begun.Apparently, my Sunday-night anxieties and Monday-morning blues are not unique to me alone. A new study led by Ilke Inceoglu from the University of Exeter found that this phenomenon often takes the form of mental concerns about the week ahead, as well as feelings of nervousness and difficulty with sleeping. “It’s as if your mind moves away from 3 has been experienced over the weekend as the general sense of relaxation or enjoyment, and quickly shifts towards whatever worries you have about everything you’ve got to do in the work week ahead,” said one of Inceoglu’s respondents.Inceoglu found that these Sunday scaries were particularly pronounced 4 people who frequently checked their emails during the weekend, had tasks left over from the previous week, and had unreasonably high expectations of themselves. These matters seem 5 (make) worse as a result of the pandemic, where the rise of working from home 6 (blur) the boundaries between work and leisure. What should we do about the “Sunday scaries”? Researchers have offered some useful suggestions that 7 help us make Monday less depressing. One is to change 8 you think about the weekend. One U.S. study found that when participants were asked to treat their weekend as a mini-vacation, they tended to do more cheerful activities and returned to work on Monday satisfied with their jobs.9 second way is to redesign our Monday so that it has some of the features that make us feel good during the weekend. Introducing simple changes, such as starting the day with something you are good at, setting aside a little unstructured time where you are able to do what you want, or setting upa lunchtime date with 10 you find enjoyable to be around, could make all the difference.2. Note that there is one word more than you need.A. technicalB. attributedC. confinedD. observationsE. sensationF. totalingG.anticipatoryH. consistent I. precisely J. suspicious K. attachedFor centuries, people have described unusual animal behavior just ahead of seismic (地震的) events: dogs barking endlessly, cows halting their milk, toads leaping from ponds. A few researchers have tried to prove a link, but most such attempts have relied largely on anecdotes and single 1 .Now researchers at the University of Konstanz, along with a multinational team of colleagues, say they have managed to 2 measure increased activity in a group of farm animals prior to seismic activity. During separate periods 3 about four months in 2016 and 2017, the researchers 4 thesehighly sensitive biologgers and GPS sensors, which can record accelerated movements in any direction, to six cows, five sheep and two dogs living on a farm in an earthquake-prone area of northern Italy to keep track of the activities and the nervousness of animals. “Only now can we do continuous biologging,” says study co-author Martin Wikelski. “Because the 5 possibilities are finally there.”The paper’s statistical analysis showed animals’ activity significantly increased before magnitude 3.8 or greater earthquakes when they were housed together in a stable — but not when they were out to pasture (吃草). Wikelski says this difference could be linked to the increased stress some animals feel in 6 spaces. Analyzing the increased movements as a whole, the researchers claim, showed a clear signal of 7 behavior hours ahead of tremors.Besides, it showed that the farm animals appeared to anticipate quakes anywhere from one to 20 hours ahead, reacting earlier when they were closer to the origin and later when they were farther away. This finding is 8 with a hypothesis that animals somehow sense a signal that spreads outward. It holds that in the days before an earthquake, shifting tectonic plates (地壳板块) squeeze rocks along a fault line, causing the rocks to release minerals that force ions into the air, and then the animals react to this novel 9 .Not involved with the new study, Wendy Bohon, a geologist from Washington, D.C., is 10 of the air ionization idea. Heiko Woith, a geologist at GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences, says the time frame was still too short and points out that limited data collection in many studies makes it impossible to determine whether a measured signal was related to a quake or was simply noise.3. You May Need a Few Minutes of Brisk ActivityWalking from room to room, running up and down stairs to deliver folded laundry, or taking a jog around the block... Which ones would best help or hurt your brain? A recent study attempted to a answer that question by strapping( 绑上) activity monitors to the thighs of nearly 4,500 people in the United Kingdom and ________ their 24-hour movements for seven days. Researchers then examined how participants’ behavior affected their short-term memory, problem-solving and processing skills. Here’s the good news. People who spent “even small amounts of time in more vigorous activities—as little as six to nine minutes—compared to sitting, sleeping or gentle activities had ________ cognition scores,” said study author John Mitchell.Moderate physical activity is ________ defined as brisk walking or bicycling or running up and down stairs. Vigorous movement ________ dancing, jogging, running, swimming to biking up a hill—basically any activity that is able to ________ your heart rate and breathing. The study found that doing just under 10 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) each day led to ________ in study participa nts’ working memory. In addition, 10 minutes of MVPA had its biggest impact on executive processes such as ________and organization. The cognitive improvement was ________, but the research found that the benefits grew the more time a person spent ________in the activity of an energetic workout, Mitchell said.“Now that we don’t monitor participants’ cognition over the course of many years, the results of this study may simply be telling us that those individuals who move more tend to have higher cognitionon average,” he said. “While on the other hand, the results do also imply that even making ________ changes to our daily lives can have ________ consequences for our cognition.”There was bad news as well. Spending more time sleeping, sitting or engaged only in mild movement was linked to a negative impact on the brain. The study found cognition declined 1% to 2% after replacing an ________ portion of MVPA with eight minutes of sedentary (久坐的) behavior, six minutes of light intensity or seven minutes of sleep.Additional studies need to be done to ________ these findings and to better understand the role that each type of activity plays ________ our cognitive abilities. However, Mitchell said, the study “highlights how even very modest differences in people’s daily movements— less than 10 minutes—can be linked to the ________of quite real changes to our cognitive health.”1.A.modifying B.tricking C.clarifying D.tracking2.A.lower B.higher C.smaller D.bigger3.A.typically B.previously C.barely D.absolutely4.A.ranges from B.arises from C.keeps from D.stems from5.A.calm B.push C.boost D.slow6.A.improvements B.adjustments C.requirements D.statements7.A.arguing B.meditating C.planning D.compromising8.A.imposing B.modest C.accessible D.reliable9.A.phasing B.indulging C.meditating D.engaging10.A.maximum B.lasting C.temporary D.minimal11.A.leading B.positive C.quantifiable D.downstream12.A.acute B.equivalent C.observable D.unimportant 13.A.reject B.propose C.advocate D.confirm14.A.in addition to B.with respect to C.prior to D.specific to15.A.occurrence B.performance C.disappearance D.convenience 4. Brenda Thomas’s heart became a shell when her 21-year-old son died in a motorcycle accident in September 2019, only one week into his senior year of college. But she has found something that helps her to deal with her grief. She keeps “acts of kindness” cards in honor of her son. These folded pieces of paper are tucked in her purse at all times and always stored in the glove compartment of her car. Whenever she does a good deed for a stranger— which is about once a week— she passes along a card with a message written on it: “If you receive this card, then you must be a recipient of a random act of kindness.” At the top of each note is her son’s name, Trevor Paul Thomas.Trevor was an athlete who played baseball at Allegany College of Maryland and Penn State Fayette. He was a loyal friend and a force for good, with a witty sense of humor and a big smile. According to his mother, one of Trevor’s best qualities was his compassion for others, no matter how well he knew them. He regularly shoveled(铲) snow off the driveways of older neighbors, delivered hot meals to those in need, and befriended classmates who struggled to fit in. It seemed a natural fit to launch a kindness campaign in his memory. The Thomas family adopted the “acts of kindness” cards to mark what would have been Trevor’s 23 birthday. They hoped that these cards would encourage people to do a good deed as part of Trevor’s legacy. On each card, they included a mantra (箴言) that the family said best describes the way Trevor had lived his life: “Be somebody who makes everybody feel like somebody.”Recently, while dining with her daughter Whitney in a restaurant, Brenda decided to pay for the meal of a mother and two children. The recipient of Brenda’s spontaneous (发自内心的) gift was Liana Arruda. She was taking her nine-year-old son and his five-year-old sister for dinner. She felt shocked and moved after the waitress handed her the card. She used it as an opportunity to teach her children about compassion and is now brainstorming ways to pass on the goodness. “I’m waiting to find the perfect opportunity,” she said. “I want it to matter, because it mattered to me.”For the Thomas family, while there is still—and forever will be—a massive void(空虚感) in their lives without Trevor, committing to “living like him” has helped them turn their pain into purpose. “We’ll keep paying it forward in Trevor’s honor because it would make him so proud,” said Brenda.1. Trevor Paul can be best described as________.A.ambitious, witty and optimisticB.sympathetic, humorous and warmheartedC.faithful, passionate and competitiveD.compassionate, persistent and rigorous2. According to the context, the sentence “Be somebody who makes everybody feel like somebody.”(P4) can be best illustrated by __________.A.Do as Romans do.B.Serve others to be popular.C.Influence others with what you do.D.Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.3. Which of the following statements is TURE?A.Trevor would have graduated from university within one year but for the accident.B.Every time Brenda does a good deed for others, they’ll receive an anonymous card.C.Liana was astonished and touched because her two children gave her the gift spontaneously.D.Liana has found a perfect opportunity to pass on the goodness and teach her children about compassion.4. What conclusion can we draw from the passage?A.Your pain can be turned into purpose to push you forward.B.Compassion means standing in others shoes.C.Void can be replaced with satisfaction by “living like him”.D.Committing to “following his way” is a good way to honor somebody.5.1. When we think about lives filled with meaning, we often focus on people whose grand contributions benefited humanity. Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Nelson Mandela surely felt they had a worthwhile life. But how about us ordinary people, toiling away in a typical existence? Many scholars agree that a subjectively meaningful existence often boils down to three factors: the feeling that one’s life is coherent and “makes sense,” the possession of clear and satisfying long-term goals and the belief that one’s life matters in the grand scheme of things. P sychologists call these three things coherence, purpose and existential mattering. But we believe there is another element to consider. Think about the first butterfly you stop to admire after a long winter or imagine the scenery atop a hill after a fresh hike. Sometimes existence delivers us small moments of beauty. When people are open to appreciating such experiences, these moments may enhance how they view their life. We call this element experiential appreciation. The phenomenon reflects the feeling of a deep connection to events as they happen and the ability to extract value from that link. It represents the detection of and admiration for life’s inherent beauty. We recently set out to better understand this form of appreciation in a series of studies, published in Nature Human Behaviour, that involved more than 3,000 participants. Across these studies, we were interested in whether experiential appreciation was related to a person’s sense of meaning even when we accounted for the effects of the classic trio of coherence, purpose and existential mattering. If so, experiential appreciation could be a unique contributor to meaningfulness and not simply a product of these other variables. As an initial test of our idea, during the early stages of the COVID pandemic, we had participants rate their endorsement of different coping strategies to relieve their stress. We found that people who managed stress by focusing on their appreciation for life’s beauty also reported experiencing life as highly meaningful. In the next study, we asked participants to rate the extent to which they agreed with various statements, such as “I have a great appreciation for the beauty of life” as well as other statement related to coherence, purpose, existential mattering and a general sense of meaning in life. Our results showed that the more people indicated that they were “appreciating life” and its manyexperiences, the more they felt their existence was valuable. In fact, these two elements related strongly to each other even when we controlled for other aspects of a meaningful life. Finally, we conducted a series of experiments in which we gave people specific tasks and, once more, asked them to report how strongly they identified with statements linked to purpose, mattering, etc.. The results confirmed our original theory: appreciating small things can make life feel more meaningful. But applying that insight can be difficult. Our modern, fast-paced, project-oriented lifestyles fill the day with targets and goals. We are on the go, and we attempt to maximize output both at work and at leisure. This focus on future outcomes makes it all too easy to miss what is happening right now. Yet life happens in the present moment. We should slow down, let life surprise us and embrace the significance in the everyday.1. What factor accounts for the life meaning of ordinary people besides coherence, purpose and existential mattering?A.Contribution. B.Possession.C.Experiential appreciation. D.Inherent beauty.2. We can infer from the passage that _________.A.Experiential appreciation is a product of existential mattering.B.Focusing on future outcome can help maximize output.C.The following experiments in the study are opposed to the result of the initial test.D.We’d better appre ciate small things in daily life despite the fast-paced lifestyles.3. The underlined word “endorsement”(PSL2) is closest in meaning to _________.A.enjoyment B.approval C.rejection D.comment4. Which of the following is the author most likely to agree with?A.During the COVID pandemic, it’s difficult to find coping strategies to relieve stress.B.Maximizing output motivates people to catch what is happening right now.C.Appreciating life and its experiences can enhance the feeling of valuable existence.D.In modern society, it’s common practice to appreciate small things to make life moremeaningful.7. “TALKING with you for one night is better than studying books for ten years” this was the comment of an old Chinese scholar after he had had a conversation with a friend. 1 And today the phrase “a night’s talk” has become a current expression for a happy conversation with a friend at night, either past or expected.Such a supreme pleasure as having a perfect conversation with a friend at night is necessarily rare, for as the playwright Li Liweng has pointed out, “ 2 ” The discovery of a man up in a mountain temple, who really understands life and at the same time understands the art of conversation, musttherefore be one of the keenest pleasures, like the discovery of a new planet by an astronomer or of a new variety of plant by a botanist. There is an evident distinction between mere talking and conversation as such. This distinction is made in the Chinese language between shuohua (speaking) and tanhua (conversation), which implies that in conversation the language used is more chatty and leisurely and the topics more trivial and less business like.3 We can discuss business with almost any person, but there are very few people with whom we can trul y hold a night’s conversation. Hence, when we do find a true conversationalist, the pleasure is equal to, if not above, that of reading a delightful author, with the additional pleasure of hearing his voice and seeing his gestures.Sometimes we find it at the happy reunion of old friends, or among acquaintances indulging in good memories, and sometimes among strangers on a distant journey. There will be chats about ghosts and fox spirits, mixed with amusing tales or impassioned(激昂的) comments: on international affairs, and sometimes before we know it, a wise observer and conversationalist may shed light on things that have bothered you for a long time. 4passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. Why You Need a Network of Casual FriendsWhen I was laid off in 2015, I tweeted it the way any young people would in the hope that someone in my social network would point me to potential opportunities. To my surprise, a friend of a friend alerted me to an opening in her department by Facebook message, and she became my boss three rounds of interviews later.Think of the parents you see in the drop-off zone at school, your favorite waiter, the other dog owners at the park. Sociologists call these relationships “weak ties.” Not only can these connections affect our job prospects, but they can also have a positive impact on our well-being.Maintaining the network of acquaintances can help you feel more connected. The desire to belong and form social attachments is a basic human need, alongside food, sleep and safety. But once we hit 25, the number of friends we have peaks and becomes smaller over time, according to a 2016 study. As we get older and priorities shift from after-work bowling league to after-school pickup, maintaining a loaded social calendar becomes less important. Staying socially engaged, then, is integral to personal fulfillment.Besides, having at least a few acquaintances can connect us with a larger circle of people, which is fantastic news, say, for job hunters. Even if our friends want to help us find a job, the weak ties are often the ones who widen the job-search playing field. Those acquaintances also provide us with a wider worldview. Regularly interacting with people who have different experiences than we do all ows us to be more mindful of others’ circumstances. This, in turn, builds empathy.Still, casual friends have a lot to offer. Uncovering surprising tidbits(花边新闻) about the regular players in one’s life—discovering that your neighbor is an accomplished dancer, for instance—can spice up your day.So next time you see a friendly face when you’ re out and about, you might as well try to initiate small talks.________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________9. 要确保你在房屋摇晃的时候待在牢固的家具下方不动。

2022-2023学年上海市嘉定区高二下学期期末统考英语试题

2022-2023学年上海市嘉定区高二下学期期末统考英语试题1. Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passages coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank. Most underrated pleasures of one’s lifeOne of the biggest drivers of good relationships in our lives is a developed level of understanding in those relationships. The relationships 1 this understanding end up creating too much maintenance work. So it becomes more like luggage or at least something that needs attention or care rather than fun.I realized it with a couple of friend s of mine. Recently my “friend ecosystem” had a sudden change.A couple of them 2 (leave) although I still have a couple around. I am also adding a couple of new ones. The whole change made me thoughtful. I started to think about the cause of being better friends with some. It turns out that among the large number of other factors, one of the key ones is 3 (understand). It can then be extended to personal and even business relationships. While 4 (hire) a key employee, one can be sure that it will work well if the other person enjoys and understands you well. It will be far 5 (productive) as the relationship related maintenance is low and you can focus on actual output. It 6 help you even when you are looking for funding partners, seed capital or business joint ventures (企业).Finally, how do you ensure you are understood? To start with, make sure that the people who 7 (matter) to you in any capacity like business, managerial, personal or family have an open relationship with you. Creating an open environment 8 others can discuss constructive aspects or difficult discussion is important.Being caring and respectful to 9 and being truthful are two different things. Truthfulness is as important as being respectful and caring. In the long term, truthfulness will result in a caring relationship, 10 you are understood well and have an open relationship, you can’t be truthful. When you get to that level with the person where you are completely understood, it will be an awesome feeling!2. Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in each blank with a proper word given in the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one more word than you need.A.appearances B.imitating C.distinguish D.isolate E.advantageous F.diverseG.identical H.criterion I.markings J.poisonous K.threateningWhy different species start looking exactly the sameIs it better to stand out from the crowd or be similar to the background? For birds, the answer is complicated. While peacocks (孔雀) show off their brightly colored feathers to attract mates and ward off predators (捕食者), other birds find it 1 to hide themselves by imitating the looks of other birds.Groups of birds flying together often come from the same species, making it hard to 2 one from another. However, some groups of birds including two or more species take on similar 3 , which isan uncommon ph enomenon. “They all share random features, like feathers on head or yellow bellies (腹部), which makes them almost 4 . You can’t really tell them apart without looking at their 5 .” says Scott Robinson, a famous scholar. His new study suggests 6 another bird’s appearance is not a coincidence (巧合) but rather an evolutionary method to increase their chances of survival. Looking like a bird from a dominant specter helps reduce attack from other members and appear more 7 to potential predators.“In imitation, you often want to look like something because there’s an advantage to being that other thing. You want species to think you’re 8 or low-profitable target” says Rebecca Kimball, a professor of biology. “In grouping birds, one idea is that this has more to do with a predator’s ability to 9 a target. When there are a group of birds moving around, it may be easier for predators to identify an individual that has a distinct color pattern.”While it may not seem like it at first, imitating other birds is helping to create more 10 species. Not only do birds imitate more than one species as they grow up, but their appearance varies over time.3. Most people have seen animals solve problems in one context or another Whether it’s a dog getting food out of a puzzle toy, a squirrel (松鼠) breaking into a “squirrel-proof, bird feeder, or —in what is hopefully a rarer experience — a bear opening a door to get to the food inside!Do all individuals within a species come up with ________ solutions to problems? Or are some individuals more innovative than others? In ungulates (for example, goats and horses), social outsiders are more likely to innovate than their ________ groupmates: if an individual spends time on the outer areas of their group, they are more likely to succeed at a problem-solving task.________, in some species of primates (灵长类动物) and birds, it has been shown that individuals with low social standing —that is, those who regularly lose fights, and who don’t have ________ of access to valuable resources — tend to innovate more. The above examples tie into the theory that the individuals who are least able to gain access to good quality ________, such as food and shelter, are the most likely to innovate. This “bad competitor” theory suggests that indivi duals innovate because they must do so to ________. Imagine you’re a goat who can’t get access to the feeding container because you’re not in the in-group. You’d probably be more ________ to figure out how to open a container with food inside than your more popular (and well-fed) groupmates. However, while there is support for this theory in some species, many species show opposing patterns. ________, being a “bad competitor” doesn’t seem to be a general driver of innovation across species. ________ appears to have a more general influence on animal innovativeness. A meta-analysis (综合分析) across 37 studies of animal innovation found that being brave (that is, approaching ________ objects and exploring new environments) was linked to innovative behavior. For example, brave Carib grackles (a species of bird) and ungulates are more likely to innovate than their more easily frightened groupmates. ________ has also been linked to innovation in a variety of species, from zebra finches (斑胸草雀) to Asian elephants. Both make instinctive sense. The more likely an individual is to ________ with a new problem (that is, the braver they are, and the more time they spend trying to solve a problem (that is, the more persistent they are), the more likely they are to find a(n) ________.Regardless of the reason individuals innovate, once an individual finds a solution to a problem,________ a problem involving resource access, their behavior can spread like wildfire. Other individuals pay attention when a groupmate innovates, and ________ the problem-solving behavior.1.A.instant B.comprehensive C.fair D.creative2.A.friendly B.popular C.close D.faithful3.A.Similarly B.Inevitably C.Apparently D.Gradually4.A.purpose B.priority C.pressure D.potential5.A.services B.materials C.goods D.resources6.A.pretend B.compete C.survive D.evolve7.A.reluctant B.excited C.motivated D.confused8.A.Thus B.Besides C.Still D.Meanwhile9.A.Emotion B.Gender C.Appearance D.Personality 10.A.living B.novel C.endangered D.ideal11.A.Persistence B.Intelligence C.Performance D.Confidence 12.A.conflict B.compare C.interact D.identify13.A.position B.object C.solution D.chance14.A.absolutely B.fortunately C.definitely D.particularly15.A.copy B.change C.influence D.evaluate4.A schoolgirl has created a solar-powered backpack that filters (过滤) out air pollution after being inspired by her asthmatic (患哮喘病的) mother.Eleanor Woods, 12, from a town in northern England, entered the “Backpack to the Future” competition after her mother put the application form in her room. She went on to win the award for her innovative bag.The “Backpack to the Future” competition was launched to change perceptions, encourage more diversity within engineering and to show children how they could combine an interest in fashion with a career in STEM (science, technology, engineering or maths).Powered by green energy from solar power and a dynamo—a machine that changes mechanical energy into electrical energy—the backpack filters polluted air before fanning out cleaner air nearby. “I have an air filter at home because my mum has mild asthma. My Breathe Better Backpack is all about keeping my friends, family and classmates safe using an air filter. It looks cool and will help get kids outside and fight off colds,” said Eleanor. “The first thing that came to mind is that blue is one of my favorite colors and blue feels clean and the bubbles on the outside have a clean theme for breathing.”The pandemic encouraged Eleanor’s awareness of how pollution affects a person’s health and the spread of diseases. Spending a lot of time with her asthmatic mum over several lockdowns gave the 12-year-old food for thought. The schoolgirl added, “My generation is really aware of pollution, and we have lessons on it at school along with diseases spreading, and this is another reason I designed this, because it is getting much worse.” The young designer said she is becoming increasingly aware of the pollution that surrounds her, as she lives on a main road. Eleanor said, “I walk to school, next to the road, and can taste the petrol when buses come through.”Speaking after winning the competition, Eleanor said the impact of her backpack will he far- reaching. “If just a few people start using it, it could be really good for the planet,” she said.1. As plastic waste increases rapidly around the world, an essential question remains unanswered: What harm, if any, does it cause to human health?A few years ago, as microplastics began turning up in the organs of fish and shellfish, the concern was focused on the safety of seafood. Shellfish were a particular worry, because in their case, unlike fish, we eat the entire animal — stomach, microplastics and all. In 2017, Belgian scientists announced that seafood lovers could consume up to 11,000 plastic particles (粒子) a year by eating mussels (贻贝), a favorite dish in that country.By then, however, scientists already understood that plastics continuously fragment small pieces in the environment, tearing over time into fibers even smaller than a strand of human hair — particles are so small that they easily fly in the air. A team at the U.K.’s University of Plymouth decided to compare the threat from eating polluted wild mussels in Scotland to that of breathing air in a typical home. Their conclusion: People will take in more plastic by breathing in or taking tiny, invisible plastic fibers floating in the air around them—fibers from their own clothes, carpets, and soft covering on furniture — than they will by eating the mussels. So, it wasn’t much of a surprise when, in 2022, scientists from the Netherlands and the U.K, announced they had found tiny plastic particles in living humans, in two places where they hadn’t been seen before: deep inside the lungs of surgical patients, and in the blood of unknown donors. Neither of the two studies answered the question of possible harm. But together they signaled a shift in the focus of concern about plastics toward the cloud of dust particles in the air, some of them are so small that they can get into deep inside the body and even inside cells, in ways that larger microplastics can’tDick Vethaak, a professor of ecotoxicology (生态毒理学), doesn’t consider the results alarming, exactly—“but, yes, we should be concerned. Plastics should not be in your blood.” “We live in amulti-particle world,” he adds, referring to the dust, pollen (花粉), and smog that humans also breathe in every day. “The trick is to figure out how much plastics contr ibute to that particle burden and what does that mean.”1. What does the word “fragment” in para. 3 probably mean?A.break into B.take in C.pick out D.make up2. The study done by a team at the U K.’s University of Plymouth shows that ________.A.microplastics from things in our daily life ant more poisonousB.people eating polluted mussels are more likely to get diseasesC.invisible plastic fibers are more harmful to the environmentD.the influence of microplastics in mussels is less than thought3. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.A.microplastics in polluted wild mussels can cause serious diseasesB.there’s no need to worry about the plastics found in human bloodC.we can avoid breathing particles by figuring out particle burdenD.more attention should be paid to the dust particles than plastics4. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?A.Are Microplastics Harmful to Us?B.Should Microplastics be in Our Blood?C.Can Microplastics Get into Our Bodies?D.Do We Know Anything about Microplastics?7. Texting or Talking? The telephone was an amazing invention. People could finally speak to each other instantly from one home to another. The mobile phone took this technology further, meaning we could make contact with people to and from almost anywhere in the world. 1I do n’t mean we have taken up letter writing again. Although a handwritten letter has a personal touch, sending it by post is too slow to satisfy our desire to keep in touch immediately. 2 A study in the UK a few years ago found 49 per cent of teenagers preferred to send a text rather than speak to someone.Certainly sending an SMS, text or message through a chat app means we can compose what we want to say, and we can be more efficient in saying it — especially if we express ourselves by using emojis (表情符号). 3 Text messaging also allows privacy —other people can’t overhear your text if you’re in a public place such as on a train.4 We may even forget the art of pleasantries (客套). A text can be misinterpreted too because you miss out on a speaker’s intonation (语调). We always speak with melody and intonation to our voice… you take that channel of information out of communication, you lose another way that sense is being conveyed.9. This peaceful moment, capturing the essence of Earth’s delicacy, was taken by Nima Sarikhani, who won Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award, which is decided by public vote.Sarikhani, from the UK, spent three days searching Norway’s Svalbard islands in the hope of catching sight of these symbolic Arctic (北极的) animals. He was finally rewarded with the sight of both an older and younger male shortly after his ship changed course. Sarikhani seized the chance to take a photo of the younger bear sleeping on the iceberg — a scene that not only awakens the bond between an animal and its habitat, but also the need to act on global challenges like climate change and habitat loss. These days, the sight of a lone polar bear on melting ice is a familiar symbol of the impact of climate change. But that is for a good reason: global warming is having a particularly rapid effect on the Arctic, which is heating up at a rate three times as high as that of the average around the world. Among those hardest hit are these bears, which are increasingly threatened by the reduction in sea ice cover that they rely on to hunt and raise young.Though his photo is intended to arouse emotion in those who see it, Sarikhani is optimistic that with the right actions, it isn’t too late for polar bears. The image will be displayed in an exhibition at the Natural History Museum, London, along with the competition’s four runners-up, until 30 June.36.Sarikhani’s journey in Svalbard can be described as ______.A.purposeful B.leisurely C.profit-driven D.research-led37.It can be inferred from paragraph 3 that ______.A.polar bears are likely to die outB.the warming of the Arctic just beginsC.sea ice cover is vital for polar bears’ survivalD.polar bears are adapting well to climate change38.According to the last paragraph, what’s Sarikhani’s hope for the impact of his photo?A.To arouse people’s sadness for the scene.B.To motivate people to protect polar bears.C.To attract more visitors to the Arctic.D.To boost the popularity of the exhibition.39.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A.Svalbard’s quietness: Polar bears’ comfortable zoneB.Arctic adventure: Search for a dramatic landscapeC.Bearing witness: Polar bears’ shelter on melting iceD.Ice and isolation: A faraway natural wonderFour Books Worth ReadingEntangled Life (Illustrated) by Merlin SheldrakeFollowing 2020’s real hit Entangled Life, biologist Sheldrake returns in time with an impressive illustrated edition. This may not always be the case. The latest evidence comes from a study in which people classed as overweight, but not extremely fat, had a lower death rate within a certain period than people with a supposedly ideal weight. This suggests that the threshold (阈值) for classifying individuals as overweight may have been set too low.It is uncontroversial that being very heavy is bad for health, but it is unclear at what point health risks begin. Doctors usually ad vise people to lose weight if their Body Mass Index (BMI) is high, which is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters. In most countries, a healthy weight is defined as a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. Having a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is classed as overweight and 30 and above as extremely fat.Previous research made waves when it found that people whose BMI was somewhat over the “healthy” threshold of 25 may have a slightly lower death rate than slimmer individuals. But many of the studies are fairly old and were done when people were mostly slimmer, and subjects weren’t racially diverse, says Aayush Visaria, a researcher in New Jersey. To address those issues, Visaria tracked the survival of about 500,000 racially diverse US adults of known height and weight for up to 20 years. Having a BMI between 25 and 27.4 carrieda 5 percent lower risk of death in this period than a BMI within the healthy category of 22.5 to24.9. A slightly higher BMI, of 27.5 to 29.9, seemed even better, linked with a 7 percent lower risk of death. One criticism is that the apparent benefit of being overweight could be a misconception, as people who lose weight due to illness are more likely to die. However, in the new research, the pattern persisted even if people who died within two years of entering the study were ruled out from the figures.Visaria says it’s too early to conclude that having an “overweight” BMI outperforms being in the healthy category, because population studies may be prejudiced and lead to misinterpretation of the results. “We aren’t certain if this is truly interpretable,” he says. “A moreappropriate message is that BMI isn’t a good indicator of death risk—other factors, like body fat distribution, also play a role.”43.The purpose of the first paragraph is to ______.A.put forward a controversial issue B.discuss reasons for a lower death rateC.reveal a finding that questions a common belief D.justify the traditional “overweight”threshold44.According to paragraph 3 and 4, Visaria resolved the limitations of previous research by______.A.arriving at a more specific findingB.tracking the research for another 20 yearsC.calming down a wave of criticism from the crowdD.adopting a large, diverse sample over an extended period45.According to the passage, “the pattern” in paragraph 5 refers to ______.A.the misconception about the benefit of being overweightB.the increased likelihood of death for individuals losing weight due to illnessC.the changing perception of BMI classification over timeD.the lower risk of death for slightly heavier persons in a set time compared to slimmer ones 46.Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?A.Weight and blood pressure are two primary factors related to BMI.B.To accurately reflect someone’s health risk, a broader view is necessary.C.Visaria will continue to figure out a more scientific BMI threshold.D.Visaria is confident of the reliability of his research.Tuning in to GesturesGesture gets its power in part from the fact that it is seldom noticed by the speaker or listener yet is easily understood and included in our conversations. The challenge is to use it to good effect. 47Gesture more when you speak. It will help you learn and understand, and also think in a more abstract way. If you gesture while talking, you will remember more of what you have said. Do it while you are multitasking and it will lighten your mental load. What’s more, when yougesture, the people around you tend to do so too. 48Encourage gestures in your children, students and anyone else you are trying to teach. This will help them understand the material you are conveying. 49 That is important because being able to generalise what we learn is essential to acquiring new knowledge.Pay attention to other people’s gestures. These offer a window into the thoughts that speakers have but don’t express in their words. These thoughts are often at the cutting-edge of their knowledge or address issues that are uppermost in their minds. Noticing and responding to such gestures will improve your interactions at home and at work.Observe the gesturing of infants (婴儿). While learning to talk, children typically convey sentence-like meanings in a combination of gesture and speech before using words alone. 50 If a child fails to produce these gesture-word combinations, it may be a sign that their spoken language development will be delayed, allowing you to intervene and help.A.For example, they usually point at a box and say “open”.B.You should be mindful of the potential impact of gestures.C.Make fake gestures on certain occasions if necessary.D.Here are some tips that can help you take advantage of gestures.E.This can give you a way of seeing what others are thinking but not saying.F.Gesturing while learning will also help them solve the same problem in a new way.五、书面表达51.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. What Is a Superiority Complex?A superiority complex is a behavior that suggests a person believes they are somehow superior to others. People with this complex often have overstated opinions of themselves. They may believe their abilities and achievements are better than those of others. However, the complex is believed to be a defense system for feelings of inadequacy that we all struggle with.It is unclear why a person develops a superiority complex. Multiple incidents may be the root cause. For example, it may be the result of many failures. A person tries to complete aspecific goal or achieve a desired outcome, but they don’t succeed. They learn to handle the anxiety and stress of the failure by pretending to be above it. If they feel protected from their failures in this way, they may repeat this behavior in the future. These behaviors can begin at an early age. When a child is learning to cope with challenges, they may learn to control feelings of inadequacy or fear. A superiority complex may develop. Likewise, it may also happen later in life. As teens and adults, a person has many opportunities to try new things among new people. If these situations are not successfully coped with, a person may develop a superiority complex to overcome feeling isolated.People with a superiority complex are unlikely to be a threat to anyone’s physical health. However, the continuous lies and overstatements can become annoying to others and may negatively affect relationships. It can push away other people in your life and shrink your social circle. If you are in a relationship with a person who you think has the issue, encourage the person to seek help. For example, never hesitate to reach out to mental health professionals. They can find healthier ways to deal with hidden feelings._______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________六、翻译52.检查过程中未发现任何机器损坏。

Jeb put his bag down quickly and pulled his jacket open with both hands, making himself look big to the cougar. It worked. The cougar hesitated, ready to attack Jeb, but ready to forget the whole thing, too.Jeb let go of his jacket, grasped Tom and held him across his body, making a cross. Now the cougar’s enemy looked even bigger, and it rose up, ready to move away, but unfortunately Tom got scared and struggled free of Jeb.“Tom, no!” shouted his father. But Tom broke and ran and that’s the last thing you do with a co ugar. As the cougar’s claws(爪子)got into his left shoulder, Jeb swung his fist at its eyes and hit hard. The animal howled and put its head back. Jeb followed up with his other fist. Then out of the corner of his eye, Jeb saw Tom. The boy was running back to help his father.“Knife, Tom,” shouted Jeb.The boy ran to his father’s bag, while Jeb started shouting as well as hitting, to keep the cougar’s attention away from Tom. Tom got the knife and ran over to Jeb. The cougar was moving its head in and out, trying to find a way through the wall Jeb was making out of his arms. It was said that the first thread was made from animal muscle and sinew (肌腱). And the earliest needles were made from bones. Since those early days, many people have been involved in the process of developing a machine that could do the same thing more quickly and with greaterCharles Wiesenthal, who was born in Germany, designed and received a patent on a double-pointed needle that eliminated the need to turn the needle around with each stitch (缝合) in England in 1755. Other inventors of that time tried to develop a functional sewing machine, but each design had at least one serious imperfection.Frenchman Barthelemy Thimonnier finally engineered a machine that really worked. However, he was nearly killed by a group of angry tailors when they burned down his garment factory. They feared that they would lose their jobs to the machine.American inventor Elias Howe, born on July 9, 1819, was awarded a patent for a method of sewing that used thread from two different sources. Howe’s machine had a needle with an eye at the point, and it used the two threads to make a special stitch called a lockstitch. However, Howe faced difficulty in finding buyers for his machines in America. In frustration, he traveled to England to try to sell his invention there. When he finally returned home, he found that dozens of manufacturers were adapting his discovery for use in their own sewing machines.Isaac Singer, another American inventor, was also a manufacturer who made improvements to the design of sewing machines. He invented an up-and-down-motion mechanism that replaced the side-to-side machines. He also developed a foot treadle (脚踏板) to power his machine. This improvement left the sewer’s hands free. Undoubtedly, it was a huge improvement of the hand-cranked machine of the past. Soon the Singer sewing machine achieved more fame than the others for it was more practical. It could be adapted to home use and it could be bought on hire-purchase. The Singer sewing machine became the first home appliance, and the Singer company became one of the first American multinationals. However, Singer used the same method to create a lockstitch that Howe had already patented. As a result, Howe accused him of patent infringement (侵犯). Of course, Elias Howe won the court case, and Singer was ordered to pay Howe royalties (版税). In the end, Howe became a millionaire, not by manufacturing the sewing machine, but by receiving royalty payments for his invention.66. Barthelemy Thimonni er’s garment factory was burned down because __________.A. people did not know how to put out the fireB. Elias Howe thought Thimonnier had stolen his inventionC. the sewing machines couldn’t work finallyD. workers who feared the loss of their jobs to a machine set fire67. Why did the court force Isaac Singer to pay Elias Howe a lifetime of royalties?A. Because the judge was against Singer for his unfriendly attitude.B. Because Howe had already patented the lockstitch used by Singer.C. Because Singer had borrowed money from Howe and never repaid it.D. Because Singer and Howe had both invented the same machine.68. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?A. A Stitch in Time Saves NineB. The Case between Howe and SingerC. Patent Laws on the Sewing MachineD. The Early History of the Sewing MachineDConsumers are being confused and misled by the hodge-podge(大杂烩) of environmental claims made by household products, according to a “green labeling” study published by Consumers International Friday.Among the report’s more unacceptalbe findings –a German fertilizer described itself as “earthworm friendly”; a brand of flour said it was “non-polluting” and a British toilet paper claimed to be “environmentally friendlier”.The study was written and researched by Britain’s National Consumer Council (NCC) for lobby group Consumers International. It was funded by the German and Dutch governments and the European Commission.“While many good and useful claims are being made, it is clear that there is a long way to go in ensuring shoppers are adequately informed about the environmental impacts they buy,” said Consumers In ternational director, Anna Fielder. The 10-country study surveyed product packaging in Britain, Western Europe, Scandinavia and the United States. It found that products sold in Germany and the United Kingdom made the most environmental claims on average. The report focused on claims made by specific products, such as detergent (洗涤剂), insect sprays and some garden products. It did not test claims, but compared them to labeling guidelines set by the International Standards Organization (ISO) in September, 1999. Researchers documented claims of environmental friendliness made by about 2,000 products and found many too vague or too misleading to meet ISO standards.“Many products had specially designed labels to make them seem environmentally friendly, but in fact many of these symbols mean nothing,” said report researcher Philip Page.“Laundry detergents made the most number of claims with 158. Household cleaners were second with 145 separate claims, while paints were third on our list with 73. The high numbers show how confusing it must be for consumers to sort the true from the misl eading,” he said. The ISO labeling standards ban vague or misleading claims on product packaging, because terms such as “environmentally friendly” and “non-polluting” cannot be verified. “What we are now pushing for is to have multinational corporations me et the standards set by the ISO,” said Page.69. According to the passage, the NCC found it unacceptable that _______.A. all the products surveyed claim to meet ISO standardsB. the claims made by products are often unclear and deceivingC. consumers wou ld believe many of the manufacturers’ claimsD. few products actually prove to be environment friendly70. As indicated in this passage, with so many good claims, the consumers _______.A. are becoming more cautious about the products they are going to buyB. are still not willing to pay more for products with green labelingC. are becoming more aware of the effects different products have on the environmentD. still do not know the exact impact of different products on the environment71. It can be inferred from the passage that the lobby group Consumer Internationalwants to _______.A. make product labeling satisfy ISO requirementsB. see all household products meet environmental standardsC. warn consumers of the danger of so-called green productsD. verify the effects of non-polluting productsSection C (5’)IATEFL China is the International Association of English Language Teachers of English as a Foreign Language, China Branch.
