适合高中背诵的篇目To us young people, challenge often emerges in the form of competition. In the next century, competition will not only come from other college graduates, but also from people of all ages,of all origins. With increasing international exchanges,we have to face growing—competition from the whole outside world. This is calling for a higher level of our personal development。

---Excerpt from Liu Xin's speech(全国英语演讲比赛第一届冠军:刘欣,南京大学,1996年)对于我们青年一代,挑战往往出现在竞争的形式.在未来的世纪,竞争将不仅只是其他大学毕业生,但也从所有年龄的人,所有的起源。

随着国际交流,我们要面对不断增长,从整个外部世界的竞争。

A Chinese philosopher, Feng Youlan, once said China is an old country with a new life。

To us, that means this country with a long, long history is on its course of modernization. I am encouraged every time I think of it. I do believe China really has a bright future,if it seeks this opportunity to continue building a road to the world。

经典短篇英文作文背诵英文:Reciting classic short English articles is a good way to improve your English skills. It helps you to expand your vocabulary, improve your grammar and sentence structure, and enhance your reading comprehension. One of my favorite short English articles is "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry. This story is about a young couple who are deeply in love but have very little money. They each sacrifice their most prized possession to buy a Christmas gift for the other. The twist at the end of the story is heartwarming and teaches us the true meaning of love and sacrifice.Another great short English article is "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. This story is about a small town that holds an annual lottery, but the winner is not rewarded with money or a prize. Instead, the winner is stoned to death by the other villagers. This story is a powerful commentary on the dangers of blindly following traditionand the importance of questioning authority.中文:背诵经典的短篇英文文章是提高英语技能的好方法。

《写作160篇》全面涵盖当年可考话题,经典话题精心选材,>01 TelevisionTelevision -- the most pervasive and persuasive of modern technologies, marked by rapid change and growth -- is moving into a new era, an era of extraordinary sophistication and versatility, which promises to reshapeour lives and our world. It is an electronic revolution of sorts, made possible by the marriage of television and computer technologies. The word "television", derived from its Greek (tele: distant) and Latin (visio: sight) roots, can literally be interpreted as sight from a distance. Very simply put, it works in this way: through a sophisticated system of electronics, television provides the capability of converting an image(focused on a special photoconductive plate within a camera) intoelectronic impulses, which can be sent through a wire or cable. These impulses, when fed into a receiver (television set), can then be electronically reconstituted into that same image.Television is more than just an electronic system, however. It is a means of expression, as well as a vehicle for communication, and as such becomes a powerful tool for reaching other human beings. The field of television can be divided into two categories determined by its means of transmission. First, there is broadcast television, which reaches the masses through broad-based airwave transmission of television signals. Second, there is nonbroadcast television, which provides for the needs of individuals or specificinterest groups t hrough controlled transmission techniques.Traditionally, television has been a medium of the masses. We are most familiar with broadcast television because it has been with us for about thirty-seven years in a form similar to what exists today. Duringthose years, it has been controlled, for the most part, by the broadcast networks, ABC, NBC, and CBS, who have been the major purveyors of news, information, and entertainment. These giants of broadcasting have actually shaped not only television but our perception of it as well. We have come to look upon the picture tube as a source of entertainment, placing our role in this dynamic medium as the passive viewer.电视电视--以快速变化与发展为标志的最普遍、最具有影响力的一项现代技术,正在步 入一个极端复杂化与多样化的新时代。

2\ Learn to live in the present moment学会生活在现实中To a large degree, the measure of our peace of mind is determined by how much we are able to live on the present moment. Irrespective of what happened yesterday or last year, and what may or may not happen tomorrow, the present moment is where you are---always!我们内心是否平和在很大程度上是由我们是否能生活在现实之中所决定的.不管昨天或去年发生了什么,不管明天可能发生或不发生什么,现实才是你时时刻刻所在之处.Without question, many of us have mastered the neurotic art of spending much of our lives worrying about variety of things--all at once. We allow past problems and future concerns dominate your present moments, so much so that we end up anxious, frustrated, depressed, and hopeless. On the flip side, we also postpone our gratification, our stated priorities, and our happiness, often convincing that "someday" will be much better than today. Unfortunately, the same mental dynamics that tell us to look toward the future will only repeat themselves so that 'someday' never actually arrives. Jhon Lennone once said, "Life is what is happening while we are busy making other plans." When we are busy making 'other plans', our children are busy growing up, the people we love are moving away and dying, our bodies are getting out of shape, and our dreams are slipping away. In short, we miss out on life. Many people lives as if life is a dress rehearsal for some later date. It isn't. In fact, no one have a guarantee that he or she will be here tomorrow. Now is the only time we have, and the only time that we have any control over. When we put our attention on the present moment, we push fear from our minds. Fear is the concern over events that might happen in the future--we won't have enoughh money, our children will get into trouble,we will get old and die,whatever. To combat fear, the best stradegy is to learn to bring your attention back to the present. Mark Twain said,"I have been through some terrible things in life, someof which actually happened." I don't think I can say it any better. Practice keeping your attention on the here and now. Your effort will pay great dividends. 3\How High Can You Jump?Flea trainers have observed a strange habit of fleas while training them. Fleas are trained by putting them in a cardboard box with a top on it. The fleas will jump up and hit the top of the cardboard box over and over and over again. As you watch them jump and hit the lid, something very interesting becomes obvious. The fleas continue to jump, but they are no longer jumping high enough to hit the top. When you take off the lid, the fleas continue to jump, but they will not jump out of the box. They won't jump out because they can't jump out. Why? The reason is simple. They have conditioned themselves to jump just so high.Once they have conditioned themselves to jump just so high, that's all they can do!Many times, people do the same thing. They restrict themselves and never reach their potential. Just like the fleas, they fail to jump higher, thinking they are doing all they can do.跳蚤训练人在训练跳蚤时发现跳蚤有一个奇怪的习惯。

1.Going Home 回家I first heard this story a few years ago from a girl I had met in New York's Greenwich Village. Probably the story is one of those mysterious bits of folklore that reappear every few years, to be told a new in one form or another. However, I still like to think that it really did happen, somewhere, sometime.

As the bus passed through New Jersey, they began to notice Vingo. He sat in front of them, dressed in a plain, ill-fitting suit, never moving, his dusty face masking his age. He kept chewing the inside of his lip a lot, frozen into some personal cocoon of silence.当他们穿过新泽西州时,坐在前排的一个叫温格的男人引起他们的注意。

There are many good exercises to make your body strong. Any exercise that allows maximum use of different body movements is good. They try more, and they try harder. They start a little earlier and they stay a little later. They are in constant motion. Unsuccessful people, on the other hand, start at the last moment necessary and quit at the first moment possible. They are fastidious about taking every minute of coffee breaks, lunch hours, sick leave, and vacations. They sometimes brag, “When I am not at work, I never even think about it.”适合英语口语背诵的文章篇三FriendsEveryone needs friends to talk with, laugh, feel closeness, and do things with. There are times when we need to be alone, though. We don’t always want people around. But we would feel lonely if we never had a friend. No two people are the same. Sometime s friends don’t get along well. That doesn’t mean they no longer like each other. Most of the time they will go on being friends. Sometimes friends move away and we miss them. Maybe we will never see them again. Luckily, we can call them and write to them.Today’s technology allows us to have more friends in more places than ever before.I'd like to talk about books. A good book is like a good friend. You should read as many books as you possibly can. You shouldn't just take a quick look at a book. You should read it carefully again and again. There is a famous quote. A man who doesn't read books is far worse off than a man who can read books. Make books your friends and let books take you aroud the world. Get a book now and dive into it. Let the wisdom contained in books guide you through your life.I want to tell you something very important today. I want to tell you the life about choices. You can choose to be miserable or you canchoose to enjoy your life. You can choose to improve your health or you can choose to destroy it. I hope you'll make correct choices. If you are having fun learning English, you’re studying in the right way.I want to talk about the importance of clear communication.Clear communication means being able to really hear what someone is saying. 1. The Functions of Music in Daily LifeMusic is everywhere. We can hear it in restaurants, airports, railway stations, supermarkets, department stores, banks, hospitals, and many other public places. Music of all kinds is now available, and tapes and CDs are not very expensive.Music plays an important role in our everyday lives. Music can give us a better feeling about ourselves and about everything around us. It can change our attitudes toward many things. When we feel sad, music can cheer us up. When we are tired and bored, music can make us relaxed. When we are working or studying, music can provide us with a pleasant environment so that we can work or study more efficiently. Music can make people work faster and with more energy. Music can lull babies to sleep and can even make cows produce more milk. In a word, life without music would be boring and monotonous.2. Four Words to Make Life WorthwhileOver the years as I’ve sought out ideas, principles and strategies to life’s challenges, I’ve come across f our simple words that can make living worthwhile.First, life is worthwhile if you learn. What you don’t know will hurt you. You have to have learning to exist, let alone succeed. Life is worthwhile if you learn from your own experiences — negative or positive. We learn to do it right by first sometimes doing it wrong. We call that a positive negative. We also learn from other people’s experience, both positive and negative.Second, life is worthwhile if you try. You can’t just learn; now you have to try so mething to see if you can do it. Try to make a difference, try to make some progress, try to learn a new skill, try to learn a new sport. It doesn’t mean you can do everything, but there are a lot of things you can do, if you just try. Try your best and go all out.Third, life is worthwhile if you stay. You have to stay from spring until harvest. Sometimes calamity comes and then it is worth wrapping it up. But just don’t end in the middle. Maybe on the next project you pass, but on this one, if you signed up, see it through. And lastly, life is worthwhile if you care. If you care at all you will get some results, if you care enough you can get incredible results. Care enough to make a difference. Care enough to turn somebody around. Care enough to start a new enterprise. Care enough to set some records. Care enough to win.3.SmokingIt is almost known to all that smoking is bad for people's health. Scientific researches show that smoking can lead to heart disease, cancer and other problems .The World Health Organization says diseases linked to smoking kill at least two million five-hundred-thousand persons each year.Still, many people find it difficult to stop smoking. One reason is that smoking usually becomes a habitual behavior and habits, whether good or bad, are not easy to be given up. Another reason is the effect of nicotine, the substance found in cigarettes works on people somewhat as drugs do.Measures have been taken to help people keep away from the harm of smoking. In many cities, smoking is forbidden in public places. The danger of smoking is warned of everywhere. And newspapers are asked not to publish advertisements for cigarettes. World "No Tobacco Day" is observed every year as the biggest campaign against smoking.4. 创建和谐的宿舍生活1. 宿舍生活有时会出现不和谐的情况;2. 一个和谐宿舍生活的必要性;3. 如何创造和谐的宿舍生活。

第一篇:Youth 青春YouthYouth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, aquality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. Thisoften exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting ourideals.Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spiritback to dust.Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being‟s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing appetite for what‟s next and the joy of thegame of living. In the center of your heart and my heart, there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, courage and power from man and from the infinite, so long as you are young. When your aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you‟ve grown old, even at 20; but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there‟s hope you may die young at 80.第二篇:Three Days to See(Excerpts)假如给我三天光明(节选)Three Days to SeeAll of us have read thrilling stories in which the hero had only a limited and specified time to live. Sometimes it was as long as a year, sometimes as short as 24 hours. But always we were interested in discovering just how the doomed hero chose to spend his lastdays or his last hours. I speak, of course, of free men who have a choice, not condemned criminals whose sphere of activities isstrictly delimited.Such stories set us thinking, wondering what we should do under similar circumstances. What events, what experiences, whatassociations should we crowd into those last hours as mortal beings, what regrets?Sometimes I have thought it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we should die tomorrow. Such an attitude wouldemphasize sharply the values of life. We should live each day with gentleness, vigor and a keenness of appreciation which areoften lost when time stretches before us in the constant panorama of more days and months and years to come. There are those,of course, who would adopt the Epicurean motto of “Eat, drink, and be merry”. But most people would be chastened by thecertainty of impending death. In stories the doomed hero is usually saved at the last minute by some stroke of fortune, but almost always his sense of values ischanged. He becomes more appreciative of the meaning of life and its permanent spiritual values. It has often been noted thatthose who live, or have lived, in the shadow of death bring a mellow sweetness to everything they do.Most of us, however, take life for granted. We know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future. When we are in buoyant health, death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it. The days stretch out in an endless vista. So wego about our petty tasks, hardly aware of our listless attitude toward life. The same lethargy, I am afraid, characterizes the use of all our faculties and senses. Only the deaf appreciate hearing, only theblind realize the manifold blessings that lie in sight. Particularly does this observation apply to those who have lost sight and hearingin adult life. But those who have never suffered impairment of sight or hearing seldom make thefullest use of these blessedfaculties. Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sounds hazily, without concentration and with little appreciation. It is the sameold story of not being grateful for what we have until we lose it, of not being conscious of health until we are ill.I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during hisearly adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight; silence would teach him the joys of sound.•第三篇:Companionship of Books 以书为伴(节选)Companionship of BooksA man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the company he keeps; for there is a companionship of booksas well as of men; and one should always live in the best company, whether it be of books or of men.A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the same today that it always was, and it will never change. It is the mostpatient and cheerful of companions. It does not turn its back upon us in times of adversity or distress. It always receives us with thesame kindness; amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting and consoling us in age.Men often discover their affinity to each other by the mutual love they have for a book just as two persons sometimes discover afriend by the admiration which both entertain for a third. There is an old proverb, …Love me, love my dog.” But there is more wisdomin this:” Love me, love my book.” The book is a truer and higher bond of unio n. Men can think, feel, and sympathize with each otherthrough their favorite author. They live in him together, and he in them.A good book is often the best urn of a life enshrining the best that life could think out; for the world of a man‟s life is, for the most part, but the world of his thoughts. Thus the best books are treasuries of good words, the golden thoughts, which, remembered andcherished, become our constant companions and comforters.Books possess an essence of immortality. They are by far the most lasting products of human effort. Temples and statues decay, but books survive. Time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through theirauthor‟s minds, ages ago. What was then said a nd thought still speaks to us as vividly as ever from the printed page. The onlyeffect of time have been to sift out the bad products; for nothing in literature can long survive e but what is really good.Books introduce us into the best society; they bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived. We hear whatthey said and did; we see the as if they were really alive; we sympathize with them, enjoy with them, grieve with them; theirexperience becomes ours, and we feel as if we were in a measure actors with them in the scenes which they describe. The great and good do not die, even in this world. Embalmed in books, their spirits walk abroad. The book is a living voice. It is anintellect to which on still listens.•第四篇:If I Rest,I Rust 如果我休息,我就会生锈If I Rest, I RustThe significant inscription found on an old key---“If I rest, I rust”---would be an excellent motto for those who are afflicted with theslightest bit of idleness. Even the most industrious person might adopt it with advantage to serve as a reminder that, if one allowshis faculties to rest, like the iron in the unused key, they will soon show signs of rust and, ultimately, cannot do the work required ofthem. Those who would attain the heights reached and kept by great men must keep their faculties polished by constant use, so that theymay unlock the doors of knowledge, the gate that guard the entrances to the professions, to science, art, literature, agriculture---every department of human endeavor.Industry keeps bright the key that opens the treasury of achievement. If Hugh Miller, after toiling all day in a quarry, had devoted hisevenings to rest and recreation, he would never have become a famous geologist. The celebrated mathematician, Edmund Stone, would never have published a mathematical dictionary, never have found the key to science of mathematics, if he had given hisspare moments to idleness, had the little Scotch lad, Ferguson, allowed the busy brain to go to sleep while he tended sheep on thehillside instead of calculating the position of the stars by a string of beads, he would never have become a famous astronomer.Labor vanquishes all---not inconstant, spasmodic, or ill-directed labor; but faithful, unremitting, daily effort toward a well-directedpurpose. Just as truly as eternal vigilance is the price of liberty, so is eternal industry the price of noble and enduring success.•第五篇:Ambition 抱负AmbitionIt is not difficult to imagine a world short of ambition. It would probably be a kinder world: with out demands, without abrasions, without disappointments. People would have time for reflection. Such work as they did would not be for themselves but for thecollectivity. Competition would never enter in. conflict would be eliminated, tension become a thing of the past. The stress ofcreation would be at an end. Art would no longer be troubling, but purely celebratory in its functions. Longevity would be increased, for fewer people would die of heart attack or stroke caused by tumultuous endeavor. Anxiety would be extinct. Time would stretchon and on, with ambition long departed from the human heart.Ah, how unrelieved boring life would be!There is a strong view that holds that success is a myth, and ambition therefore a sham. Does this mean that success does notreally exist? That achievement is at bottom empty? That the efforts of men and women are of no significance alongside the force ofmovements and events now not all success, obviously, is worth esteeming, nor all ambition worth cultivating. Which are and whichare not is something one soon enough learns on one‟s own. But even the most cynical secretly admit that success exists; thatachievement counts for a great deal; and that the true myth is that the actions of men and women are useless. To believe otherwiseis to take on a point of view that is likely to be deranging. It is, in its implications, to remove all motives for competence, interest inattainment, and regard for posterity. We do not choose to be born. We do not choose our parents. We do not choose our historical epoch, the country of our birth, or theimmediate circumstances of our upbringing. We do not, most of us, choose to die; nor do we choose the time or conditions of ourdeath. But within all this realm of choicelessness, we do choose how we shall live: courageously or in cowardice, honorably ordishonorably, with purpose or in drift. We decide what is important and what is trivial in life. We decide that what makes ussignificant is either what we do or what we refuse to do. But no matter how indifferent the universe may be to our choices anddecisions, these choices and decisions are ours to make. We decide. We choose. And as we decide and choose, so are our livesformed. In the end, forming our own destiny is what ambition is about.•第六篇:What I have Lived for 我为何而生What I Have Lived ForThree passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, andunbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a waywardcourse, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy---ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of my life for a fewhours for this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness---that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousnesslooks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I haveseen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, andthough it might seem too good for human life, this is what---at last---I have found. With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the starsshine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but notmuch, I have achieved.Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always it brought me back to earth.Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hatedburden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long toalleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer. This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.•第七篇:When Love Beckons You 爱的召唤When Love Beckons YouWhen love beckons to you, follow him, though his ways are hard and steep. And when his wings enfold you, yield to him, thoughthe sword hidden among his pinions may wound you. And when he speaks to you, believe in him, though his voice may shatteryour dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden. For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning. Even as he ascends toyour height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun, so shall he descend to our roots and shake them in theirclinging to the earth. But if, in your fear, you would seek only love‟s peace and love‟s pleasure, then it is better for you that you cover your nakednessand pass out of love‟s threshing-floor, into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, butnot all of your tears. Love gives naught but it self and takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not, nor would it be possessed, for love is sufficient unto love.Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself. But if you love and must have desires, let these be your desires:To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night. To know the pain of too much tenderness. To be wounded by your own understanding of love; And to bleed willingly and joyfully. To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving; To rest at the noon hour and meditate love‟s ecstasy; To return home at eventide with gratitude; And then to sleep with a payer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.•第八篇:The Road to Success 成功之道The Road to SuccessIt is well that young men should begin at the beginning and occupy the most subordinate positions. Many of the leadingbusinessmen of Pittsburgh had a serious responsibility thrust upon them at the very threshold of their career. They were introducedto the broom, and spent the first hours of their business lives sweeping out the office. I notice we have janitors and janitresses nowin offices, and our young men unfortunately miss that salutary branch of business education. But if by chance the professionalsweeper is absent any morning, the boy who has the genius of the future partner in him will not hesitate to try his hand at thebroom. It does not hurt the newest comer to sweep out the office if necessary. I was one of those sweepers myself.Assuming that you have all obtained employment and are fairly started, my advice to you is “aim high”. I would not give a fig for theyoung man who does not already see himself the partner or the head of an important firm. Do not rest content for a moment in yourthoughts as head clerk, or foreman, or general manager in any concern, no matter how extensive. Say to yourself, “My place is atthe top.” Be king in your dreams. And here is the prime condition of success, the great secret: concentrate your energy, thought, andcapital exclusively upon thebusiness in which you are engaged. Having begun in one line, resolve to fight it out on that line, to lead in it, adopt everyimprovement, have the best machinery, and know the most about it.The concerns which fail are those which have scattered their capital, which means that they have scattered their brains also. Theyhave investments in this, or that, or the other, here there, and everywhere. “Don‟t put all your eggs in one basket.” is all wrong. I tellyou to “put all your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket.” Look round you and take notice, men who do that not often fail.It is easy to watch and carry the one basket. It is trying to carry too many baskets that breaks most eggs in this country. He whocarries three baskets must put one on his head, which is apt to tumble and trip him up. One fault of the American businessman islack of concentration. To summarize what I have said: aim for the highest; never enter a bar room; do not touch liquor, or if at all only at meals; neverspeculate; never indorse beyond your surplus cash fund; make the firm‟s interest yours; break orders always to save owners;concentrate; put all your eggs in one basket, and watch that basket; expenditure always within revenue; lastly, be not impatient, foras Emerson says, “no one can cheat you out of ultimate success but yourselves.”•第九篇:On Meeting the Celebrated 论见名人On Meeting the CelebratedI have always wondered at the passion many people have to meet the celebrated. The prestige you acquire by being able to tellyour friends that you know famous men proves only that you are yourself of small account. The celebrated develop a technique todeal with the persons they come across. They show the world a mask, often an impressive on, buttake care to conceal their realselves. They play the part that is expected from them, and with practice learn to play it very well, but you are stupid if you think thatthis public performance of theirs corresponds with the man within.I have been attached, deeply attached, to a few people; but I have been interested in men in general not for their own sakes, but forthe sake of my work. I have not, as Kant enjoined, regarded each man as an end in himself, but as material that might be useful tome as a writer. I have been more concerned with the obscure than with the famous. They are more often themselves. They havehad no need to create a figure to protect themselves from the world or to impress it. Their idiosyncrasies have had more chance todevelop in the limited circle of their activity, and since they have never been in the public eye it has never occurred to them that theyhave anything to conceal. They display their oddities because it has never struck them that they are odd. And after all it is with thecommon run of men that we writers have to deal; kings, dictators, commercial magnates are from our point of view veryunsatisfactory. To write about them is a venture that has often tempted writers, but the failure that has attended their efforts showsthat such beings are too exceptional to form. a proper ground for a work of art. They cannot be made real. The ordinary is the writer‟s richer field. Its unexpectedness, its singularity, its infinite variety afford unending material. The great man is too often all of a piece;it is the little man that is a bundle of contradictory elements. He is inexhaustible. You never come to the end of the surprises he hasin store for you. For my part I would much sooner spend a month on a desert island with a veterinary surgeon than with a primeminister.•第十篇:The 50-Percent Theory of Life 生活理论半对半The 50-Percent Theory of LifeI believe in the 50-percent theory. Half the time things are better than normal; the other half, they re worse. I believe life is apendulum swing. It takes time and experience to understand what normal is, and that gives me the perspective to deal with thesurprises of the future.Let‟s benchmark the parameters: yes, I will die. I‟ve dealt with the deaths of both parents, a best friend, a beloved boss andcherished pets. Some of these deaths have been violent, before my eyes, or slow and agonizing. Bad stuff, and it belongs at thebottom of the scale. Then there are those high points: romance and marriage to the right person; having a child and doing those Dad things likecoaching my son‟s baseball team, paddling around the creek in the boat while he‟s swimming with the dogs, discovering hiscompassion so deep it manifests even in his kindness to snails, his imagination so vivid he builds a spaceship from a scattered pileof Legos. But there is a vast meadow of life in the middle, where the bad and the good flip-flop acrobatically. This is what convinces me tobelieve in the 50-percent theory. One spring I planted corn too early in a bottomland so flood-prone that neighbors laughed. I felt chagrined at the wasted effort.Summer turned brutal---the worst heat wave and drought in my lifetime. The air-conditioned died; the well went dry; the marriageended; the job lost; the money gone. I was living lyrics from a country tune---music I loathed. Only a surging Kansas City Royalsteam buoyed my spirits.Looking back on that horrible summer, I soon understood that all succeeding good things merely offset the bad. Worse than normalwouldn‟t last long. I am owed and sav or the halcyon times. The reinvigorate me for the next nasty surprise and offer assurance thatcan thrive. The 50-percent theory even helps me see hope beyond my Royals‟ recent slump, a field of struggling rookies sown sothat some year soon we can reap an October harvest. For that on blistering summer, the ground moisture was just right, planting early allowed pollination before heat withered the tops, and the lack of rain spared the standing corn from floods. That winter my crib overflowed with corn---fat, healthy three-to-a-stalkears filled with kernels from heel to tip---while my neighbors‟ fields yielded only brown, empty husks.Although plantings past may have fallen below the 50-percent expectation, and they probably will again in the future, I am stillsustained by the crop that flourishes during the drought.第十一篇:What is Your Recovery Rate? 你的恢复速率是多少?What is Your Recovery Rate? What is your recovery rate? How long does it take you to recover from actions and behaviors that upset you? Minutes? Hours?Days? Weeks? The longer it takes you to recover, the more influence that incident has on your actions, and the less able you are toperform to your personal best. In a nutshell, the longer it takes you to recover, the weaker you are and the poorer yourperformance. You are well aware that you need to exercise to keep the body fit and, no doubt, accept that a reasonable measure of health is thespeed in which your heart and respiratory system recovers after exercise. Likewise the faster you let go of an issue that upsets you,the faster you return to an equilibrium, the healthier you will be. The best example of this behavior is found with professionalsportspeople. They know that the faster they can forget an incident or missd opportunity and get on with the game, the better theirperformance. In fact, most measure the time it takes them to overcome and forget an incident in a game and most reckon arecovery rate of 30 seconds is too long!Imagine yourself to be an actor in a play on the stage. Your aim is to play your part to the best of your ability. You have been givena script and at the end of each sentence is a ful stop. Each time you get to the end of the sentence you start a new one andalthough the next sentence is related to the last it is not affected by it. Your job is to deliver each sentence to the best of your ability.Don‟t live your life in the past! Learn to live in the present, to overcome the past. Stop the past from influencing your daily life. Don‟tallow thoughts of the past to reduce your personal best. Stop the past from interfering with your life. Learn to recover quickly.Remember: Rome wasn‟t built in a day. Reflect on your recovery rate each day. Every day before you go to bed, look at yourprogress. Don‟t lie in bed saying to you, “I did that wrong.” “I should have done better there.” No. look at your day and note whenyou made an effort to place a full stop after an incident. This is a success. You are taking control of your life. Remember this is astep by step process. This is not a make-over. You are undertaking real change here. Your aim: reduce the time spent in recovery. The way forward?Live in the present. Not in the precedent.•第十二篇:Clear Your Mental Space 清理心灵的空间Think about the last time you felt a negative emotion---like stress, anger, or frustration. What was going through your mind as youwere going through that negativity? Was your mind cluttered with thoughts? Or was it paralyzed, unable to think? The next time you find yourself in the middle of a very stressful time, or you feel angry or frustrated, stop. Yes, that‟s right, stop.Whatever you‟re doing, stop and sit for one minute. While you‟re sitting there, completely immerse yourself in the negative emotion.Allow that emotion to consume you. Allow yourself one minute to truly feel t hat emotion. Don‟t cheat yourself here. Take the entireminute---but only one minute---to do nothing else but feel that emotion. When the minute is over, ask yourself, “Am I wiling to keep holding on to this negative emotion as I go through the rest of t he day?”Once you‟ve allowed yourself to be totally immersed in the emotion and really fell it, you will be surprised to find that the emotionclears rather quickly. If you feel you need to hold on to the emotion for a little longer, that is OK. Allow yourself another minute to feel the emotion. When you feel you‟ve had enough of the emotion, ask yourself if you‟re willing to carry that negativity with you for the rest of theday. If not, take a deep breath. As you exhale, release all that negativity with your breath. This exercise seems simple---almost too simple. But, it is very effective. By allowing that negative emotion the space to be truly felt, you are dealing with the emotion rather than stuffing it down and trying not to feel it. You are actually taking away the power of theemotion by giving it the space and attention it needs. When you immerse yourself in the emotion, and realize that it is only emotion,it loses its control. You can clear your head and proceed with your task.Try it. Next time you‟re in the middle of a negative emotion, give yourself the space to feel the emotion and see what happens.Keep a piece of paper with you that says the following:Stop. Immerse for one minute. Do I want to keep this negativity? Breath deep, exhale, release. Move on!This will remind you of the steps to the process. Remember; take the time you need to really immerse yourself in the emotion. Then, when you feel you‟ve felt it enough, release it---really let go of it. You will be surprised at how quickly you can move on from anegative situation and get to what you really want to do!•第十三篇:Be Happy 快乐Be Happy!“The days that make us happy make us wise.”----John Masefieldwhen I first read this line by England‟s Poet Laureate, it startled me. What did Masefield mean? Without thinking about it much, Ihad always assumed that the opposite was true. But his sober assurance was arresting. I could not forget it.Finally, I seemed to grasp his meaning and realized that here was a profound observation. The wisdom that happiness makespossible lies in clear perception, not fogged by anxiety nor dimmed by despair and boredom, and without the blind spots caused byfear.Active happiness---not mere satisfaction or contentment ---often comes suddenly, like an April shower or the unfolding of a bud. Then you discover what kind of wisdom has accompanied it. The grass is greener; bird songs are sweeter; the shortcomings ofyour friends are more understandable and more forgivable. Happiness is like a pair of eyeglasses correcting your spiritual vision.Nor are the insights of happiness limited to what is near around you. Unhappy, with your thoughts turned in upon your emotional。

The Force of Habits之巴公井开创作Habits, whether good or bad, are gradually formed. The more we do a thing, the more we tend to like doing it; and if we do not continue to do it, we feel uncomfortable. This is called the force of habits, and the force of habits should be fought against. This applies even to such good things as work or rest. Some people form a bad habit of working too much, and others of idling too much. Bad habits, once formed, are difficult to get rid of.The wise man always remembers to check any bad habit. He warns himself “I am now becoming idle” or “I like too many sweets” or “I smoke too much”. And then adds, “I will get myself out of this bad habit at once.”The Way to Achieve SuccessMany people say that they owe much of it to the cultivation of certain good habits in early life. In forming good habits, I think we should pay attention to four things, that is honesty, industry, enthusiasm and thrift.“Honesty is the best policy.” This is a proverb to whichwe must pay attention. There are so many temptations in society that through a little carelessness we may go astray. But when we are honest, people will not be dishonest to us.Industry gives every man and woman, every boy and girl, proper work to do. To do nothing is going to ruin oneself.Enthusiasm is a great force. One’s soul will expand if one devotes oneself to a noble cause. The difficulties in our way are tremendous, but what can we not accomplish, if with enthusiasm? There are many proverbs, which set forth the advantages of thrift. Since we live in the world in which money is a very powerful thing, we should always try to save a portion of our earnings for future use. These are the four things to which we must pay attention. It is only by this way that we can achieve success.TV --- A Blessing or a Curse? As TV enters more and more families, people begin to wonder about its advantages and disadvantages. Some believe it is a blessing, others hold that it is a curse to society.TV, as a mass media, can bring to people new information on economies, culture, arts, and many other fields. People can enjoy their favorite programs at home. In some countries, some TV stations provide such programs as looking for dangerous criminals and lost children, helping to find an ideal lover, and others which are quite beneficial to society, some TV stations provide various useful seminars for people of various ages and social status. But on the other hand, TV may exert bad influence on people. Some programs are full of violence. As a result, people, especially juveniles, are led to commit crimes. An increasing number of people are so indulged in TV programs that some even neglect their duties. In my opinion, the attitude towards TV all depends on oneself. People should choose those programs, which are useful, and can bring to them the sense of beauty. On Test and Test TakingThe purpose of a test is to check how much we students have learned about a subject. It not only helps make our newly acquired knowledge permanent, but also enables us to find out what needs to spend more time improving. But some students do not deal with test correctly. Some of them are afraid of failing in a test. They cheat even at the risk of being caught on exams. Though cheating might give one “better grades”, it adds nothing to one’s knowledge. This dishonest behavior will do one more harm than good.I think that we go to college in order to have our further studies, and prepare us to be qualified for the future job. Therefore, we should take a correct attitude towards test. As long as we study diligently and review our lessons regularly, we are sure to be used to serve its real purpose. The DictionaryThe dictionary is a living teacher. Whenever you come across a new word, just consult it and you will get a clear definition. Every student, whether attending school or self-taught, should always have a dictionary at hand. As a study aid, it is convenient, inexpensive and almost omniscient (all-knowing).Language skills will develop with your constant use of various dictionaries. The more you use them, the more familiar you will become with them. Sooner or later, you will be quite skilled in finding the page, scanning the entries and locating the exact meanings of the new words. But you should have one thing in mind. As a language student, you can never become too much attached to dictionaries; basic language skills do not come from dictionaries, but from your practice. Expose yourself to the language by listening, speaking, reading and writing more, and that is the only wayto the mastery of a language. On LearningLearning is one’s own business, which cannot rely on others. As we know, learning is a process of accumulating knowledge. It is one’s life-long task, which cannot be accomplished in one move. A successful learner is an independent one who has both an indomitable (unyielding) will and amazing endurance. He will try to discover his own way of learning. Instead of waiting for the teacher’s help, he will make efforts to create favorable conditions on his own initiative. It will certainly be of great help, if there is good environment, sufficient books and equipment, as well as instructions from teacher and beneficial friends. But even if one has got all these favorable conditions, one cannot be sure to succeed in learning. So the most important factor in learning consists in one’s own effort. To learn is rather a painstaking and persevering business. Many a man is a failure because he cannot bear such indispensable hardships. Unremitting (never stopping) efforts can compensate for the lack of talents and thus enable one to get considerable progress in learning. Is Failure a Bad Thing?Failure is a common occurrence (happening) in our daily life. Whatever we do, there are always two possible results: success or failure. Although everyone wants to succeed in what he tries, sometimes failure can’t be avoided.Different people hold different attitudes towards failure. When faced with it, some can stand up to it, draw a useful lesson from it and try their best to fulfill what they are determined to do. Others, however, lose heart and give in. They do nothing but complain about themselves and objective conditions. As a popular saying goes, “Failure teaches success.” In my opinion, what really counts is not the failure itself, but the proper attitude we should take after it. I trust that as long as we keep to what is right and correct what is wrong, that is to say, learn a lesson from failure, we will be certain to succeed. So I am of the opinion that failure is not a bad thing.RecreationIt is impossible to keep in good health unless we take sufficient (enough) recreation. The mind, too, requires change to make it acute (sharp) and vigorous. There is much truth in the old saying, “All work and no play makes Jacka dull boy.”There are many games for people to indulge (enjoy) after their work of study. Among them are football, tennis, and kite-flying. Other forms of recreation are boating, fishing, gardening, cycling, walking, chess-playing, and reading. Those who spend most of their time in the open air and have constant muscular employment, should adopt reading or some other quiet forms of recreation. Persons who sit much at their business should take a kind of recreation that will supply their muscles with exercise.Recreation provides people with the kind of rest and relaxation. It makes people feel happy, energetic and confident, meanwhile it prepares people to do much better than ever in their daily work.On Today’s EducationI think one of the main problems with today’s education is that too much emphasis is placed on test score. It has become the most important criterion (standard) for college enrollment. A student, however creative and intelligent, will not be admitted into a college for his total scores are just one point less than required. It is also on of the crucial (decisive) factors either in job assignment or in employmentcompetitions. The competition for high scores among students becomes intense. Students find themselves concentrating more on strategies to achieve high scores than on acquiring the knowledge. They will play truant (stay away from) of some subsidiary (less important) courses and skip over the substance, which will not be tested on.Teachers are apt to give their students high scores. As their job is judged mainly by the students’ performance in terms of scores, some teachers tend to set easy papers to test their students on or narrow down the scope of the exam, even give them the hints to exams, or favor their students with higher scores. As a result, the competition for high scores becomes so intense that it actually affects our education results.WeekendWeekends are important. They provide people with the kind of rest and relaxation that are essential to a happy and healthy life. I’m one of thos e who know how to enjoy their leisure on the weekend. A good sleep at Saturday night usually helps me to recover from the hard labor of the week. A delight Sunday trip to the suburbs makes me fresh and free from anytension. If I stay at home, I usually do some light reading or practice Chinese calligraphy ---- a traditional writing skill which has an extraordinary calming effect. Sometimes mother invites me to help her cook and I am always happy to accept her invitation.A good rest on the weekend always makes me feel happy, energetic, confident and ready to all the hard work ahead of me. You cannot work happily and efficiently until you learn how to rest and relax on the weekend. My View on Job-HoppingSome people tend to stick to their positions all the time, as they think the longer one works in a particular field, the more skillful one will be at it. Some have been teachers all their lives. Some devote their life energy to scientific research. Such people love their work and turn out to be specialists in their own field. They are usually high achievers. Some are different. They are in the habit of job-hopping, for they always pursue (follow) what is new and stimulating (interesting). They never seem content with their present situation. Some like to meet more people, make more money and new acquaintances, so they hop from job to job.As far as I am concerned, I want to be professionally strong. I am not in favor of constant job-hopping, as the saying goes “Jack of all trades, master of none”. But I want to cooperate and communicate with someone else so as to be more creative and less partial.Attending College at One’s Own Expense Nowadays, colleges and universities tend to accept more and more candidates with a score close to the required by charging a portion of their tuition. Moreover, the percentage of the students attending college this way will be increasing year by year.Owing to this practice, college candidates have much freedom in choosing the major they mostly interested in. In addition, those who did not perform well on the College Entrance Exam are able to attend college to have further studies. It is reported that most of these students work harder than their classmates. Certainly this practice has some disadvantages. For example, those candidates who cannot afford the tuition might have fewer opportunities to receive higher education. In my opinion, the advantages of this practice weigh more than its disadvantages. So I am in favor of it and I believepeople will be more willing to accept it as time goes by.School-aged Children Drop OutIt’s reported that in China about one million school-aged children drop out of school each year and 80% of the drop-outs are from the families which are too poor to keep their children at school. To tackle the problem, the government has launched the Hope Project. It has helped thousands of children go back to school. But in my opinion, this is far from enough. In order to change this situation completely, the government should set aside an adequate amount of money for education, especially for elementary education. And also, the government should establish laws to ensure that no children should drop out of school as elementary school education is compulsory in China, and local governments should aid the poor families so that they can send their children to school. To sum up, so long as our central and local governments and the whole society pay enough attention to this problem and take effective action, this situation will be changed.Knowledge and PowerKnowledge and power are the two things most desired by man. There is close connection between these two things. Theman, having done his best in acquiring knowledge, will easily get a high position and perform it successfully.Power depends on knowledge. Knowledge to power is just like a compass to a ship, by which her sailing is made safely across an unknown ocean. A great statesman or a learned scholar can render (give) his good services to his country just because he has perfect and profound knowledge.Power only follows knowledge. A man cannot do anything well unless he has some information as how to do it well. A man will sometimes lose his way in a strange land; an apprentice cannot produce any delicate work. Why are these so? Because they are in want of knowledge. If the apprentice wishes to produce good work, he must pay attention to his instructor’s advice. We are all the future masters of our country. Our country needs our services. How can we fulfill our future tasks? To get more knowledge is the only answer.BreakfastWe get the energy for our movements from food. Human beings are just like machines. For us to work properly, we must be well energized. The energy, of course, comes from the three meals a day, that is, breakfast, lunch and dinner.Breakfast is more important than any other meal in a day. For one thing, after a night’s sleep, most of the energy stored in the human body has been consumed. Breakfast serves the purpose of replenishing (fill up again) energy, thus making us energetic again. For another, in the course of a day, morning is the period of time in which we work with most efficiency. Without breakfast, the efficiency would be lost. Finally, the constant lack of breakfast can contribute to stomach troubles. Therefore, to keep fit, we must have breakfast every day. It can be a cup of mild with some bread, or a bowl of porridge with some steamed bread, or anything else of the similar kind. Anyway, we must eat our fill (eat as much as we can), because a good breakfast can not only ensure our good health but also make a good beginning for a new day.Ability and Gook LooksOld people usually tell the young, “Don’t judge a person by his appearance.” Meaning ability is more important than appearance. Indeed, we’ve seen so many brilliant but not at all good-looking people. In the film Mozart, an opera singer reiterates (repeat) this view by saying, “For a woman of taste, it is not the looks, but the talent that interestsme.” For her, the preference shows one’s taste. However, nowadays, with more and more interviewers putting much emphasis on the looks, the appearance of the job-applicants, a lot of people come to the conclusion that appearance is more important than ability because many beautiful girls acquire very good positions although they don’t ha ve much talent. In my opinion, ability is definitely much more important than good looks, because it demonstrates one’s own self-cultivation. It bespeaks (show) the efforts and the glory of acquiring something through one’s hard work whereas a good look bespeaks no struggle of the individual. Good looks are pleasant, but I like the ability because it really shows something of my own self.Life Is StruggleEverything in the world is in constant struggle. Struggle is in a sense of the competition in natural selection among organisms.Animals and plants struggle for their existence. Nature provides them with weapons for that struggle. Lions have claws; fish have scales; roses have thorns. They use these weapons for the unavoidable war of existence. Nature alsoorders us to struggle; when we obey the nature, we win our existence. The result of struggle is the evolution of a better society. In order to surpass the others, one has to devote himself to what he does. If every individual does so, the society will make progress.Struggle is inevitable. But we should struggle with sportsmanship, not to stand in the way of others in order to achieve our own success. It is only by struggling in such a way, mankind will see a world getting more glorious day by day.Can Computer WordStr Human BrainComputers are working faster than human brain. But is it possible that some day the computer will WordStr human brain and control the human being? It is quite impossible. Computers are designed and developed by human brain. They are used to speed up the calculation. Computers are working according to the orders designed by human being. The running of computer is a group of integrated circuit run by a set of programmes. Without programmes, the computers will not know what to do.It is true people are relying more and more on computers. If people don’t know how to control computers, they may be WordStrd by computers and lose their jobs.SuccessSuccess is a lousy (very bad) teacher. It seduces (tempt) smart people into thinking they c an’t lose. And it’s an unreliable guide to the future. What seems the perfect business plan or latest technology today may soon be out-of-date.Usually winning lottery (彩票) is thought to be one’s luck. Many people like to try their luck. One of the lottery’s new millionaires gave an interview on television. When he was asked by the reporter how he had picked his winning numbers, he said that while “two of the six numbers he just pulled for no particular reason.” As for the other four numbers, he used family birth dates. “ So, you see,” he boasted(自夸), “Winning the lottery is not all just luck.”The Car and PollutionMost Americans would find it hard to think what life would look like without a car. However, some have realized the serious problem of the air pollution caused by the car. The polluted air becomes poisonous and dangerous to health. One way to get rid of the polluted air is to build a car that does not pollute. That’s what several of the large factories have been trying to do. But to build a clean car is easier said than done. Progress in this field has been slow.Another way is to take the place of the car engine by something. Now inventors are working on steam cars as well as electric cars. Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a useful model that pleases men.To prevent the world from being polluted by cars, we make some changes in the way many of us live. Americans, for example, have to reduce the number of their total cars. They are encouraged to travel and to work by bicycle. It is thought to help man to keep the air clean. But this change does not come easily. A large number of workers might find themselves without jobs if a car factory closed. Thus the problem of air pollution would become less important than that of unemployment.Although cars have led us to better life, they have also brought us new problems.。

第三天:A MODEL STUDENT 模范学生Do you mind being called a bad student? Of course not.So far as I know, everybody intends to be (become) a model student. However, to be a model student is by no means an easy thing. Firstly, he must do his best to obtain knowledge. A man without sufficient knowledge will not succeed. Secondly, he must remember to improve his health. Only a strong man can do great tasks. Thirdly, he should receive moral education. If his conduct is not good, no one will consider making friends with him.

As is well known, books teach us to learn life, truth, science and many other useful things. They increase our knowledge, broaden our minds and strengthen our character. In other words, they are our good teachers and wise friends. This is the reason why our parents always encourage us to read more books.Reading is a good thing, but we must pay great attention to the choice of books. It is true that we can derive benefits from good books. However, bad books will do us more harm than good.
