AOptimism May Help People Live LongerPeople who have an optimistic view on life are more likely to live longer, a US study said on Wednesday. The study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, analyzed data from 2004 to 2012 from 70,000 women enrolled in the Nurses’ Health Study, a long-running US study tracking women’s he alth via surveys every two years. The researchers looked at participants’ levels of optimism and other factors that might play a role in how optimism may affect mortality risk, such as race, high blood pressure, diet, and physical activity. It found the most optimistic women, or the top 25%, had a nearly 30 percent lower risk of dying from any of the diseases analyzed in the study compared with the least optimistic women, or the bottom 25%.The most optimistic women had a 16 percent lower risk of dying from cancer; 38 percent lower risk of dying from heart disease; 39 percent lower risk of dying from stroke; 38 percent lower risk of dying from respiratory disease; and 52 percent lower risk of dying from infection.Previous studies have linked optimism with reduced risk of early death from cardiovascular(心脑血管的) problems, but this was the first to find a link between optimism and reduced risk from other major causes.“While most medical and public health efforts today focus on reducing risk factors for diseases, evidence has been mounting that enhancing psychological resilience (弹性, 复原力) may also make a difference,” said Eric Kim, research fellow at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health and co-lead author of the study.“Our new findings suggest that we should make efforts to boost optimism, which has been shown to be associated with healthier behaviors and healthier ways of coping with life challenges.”The study also found that healthy behaviors only partially explain the link between optimism and reduced mortality risk. One other possibility is that higher optimism directly affects our biological systems, Kim said.Co-lead author and postdoctoral research fellow Kaitlin Hagan said optimism can be varied with relatively uncomplicated and low-cost interventions (干预), even things as simple as having people write down and think about the best possible outcomes for various areas of their lives, such as careers or friendships.“Encouraging use of these interventions could be an innovative way to enhance health in the future,” Hagan said.21. According to the recent study, optimism can .A. help women live longer than menB. enable people to stay healthyC. cure people of high blood pressureD. make woman stay young and nice22. From the recent study, the optimistic women .A. took the risk of dying from infectionB. were less likely to die from some diseaseC. had a 39% lower risk of suffering from cancerD. were less likely to suffer from low emotions23. The underlined word “mounting” in paragraph 7 might be best placed by .A. increasingB. appearingC. doublingD. showing24. Both Kim and Hagan believed that .A. simple but high-cost interventions should be tried outB. higher optimism indirectly influences our bodyC. optimism should be encouraged and developedD. optimism can help people meet all kinds of challenges.BEames HouseIn the 1940s, with a wave of American soldiers’ heading home from World War II, the magazine Art s & Architecture hoped to drum up interest in a new form of mass housing that was inexpensive and easy to construct from exiting materials. The magazine approached designers and architects like Richard Neutra, Eero Saarinen, and Charles and Ray Eames to come up with plans for modern house, and the magazine would publish them. The idea was that the blueprints would vary according to a family’s individual needs. Charles and Ray Eames chose to design for their own situation — a working couple that needed a house and space for working, but had no children at home. The result was Case Study House No. 8 in Pacific Palisades, Calif, where the Eameses made their home. The family has stayed in the house and it is home to the Eames Office, which promotes the continuation of both Charles’s and Ray’s ideas. The outside of the house and studio has been open to self-guided tours for years. Not so the inside, which is filled with Eames-designed artwork and furniture.Reservations: Reservations are required. Please call 310-459-9663 at least 48 hours in advance of you visit.Visiting Hours:Monday: 10:00 a. m. — 4: p. m.Tuesdays: 10:00 a. m. — 4: p. m.Wednesdays: CLOSEDThursdays: 10:00 a. m. — 4: p. m.Fridays: 10:00 a. m. — 4: p. m.Saturdays: 10:00 a. m. — 4: p. m.Sundays: CLOSEDAdmission: $10; students and children are free.Group Visits: group with 10+ visitors must make an appointment. Ideally the size of the group should be limited to 25 people.25. Eames House was designed to meet____________.A. an American s oldier’s needsB. Charles and Ray Eames’s needsC. the needs of a non-working coupleD. the needs of a couple with children26. Eames House is closed on ___________.A. Tuesdays and FridaysB. Mondays and SundaysC. Thursdays and SaturdaysD. Wednesdays and Sundays27. How much would two adults and two kids need to pay to visit Eames House?A. $10B. $20C. $30D. $40CThe traditional British pub is part of the scenery of British life. At a recent count, there are around 50000 of them in the UK, some of which date back to as far as the 5th and 6th centuries. The oldest — Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St. Albans — was established in 795.Because of their abundance, the names pubs take were designed to be memorable---but more than that, they were designed to be visual. Outside any traditional pub worthy of its title, you’ll find a hanging signboard with a unique illustration(插图)that represents the name of the business. The practice is so well established that even new pubs copy it. But why do they exist at all?The first British pub signs were created in the 12th century and were simple representations of beer containers and other brewing-related equipment used to inform passersby that establishments sold beer. This was Britain in the dark ages, when education was in short supply. Since most of the population were unable to read, pub signs were used to inform would-be customers that they could find a drink inside. The earliest uses of pub names would reference the sign directly. Peop le would arrange to meet “at the sign of the Eagle and Child” rather than “at the Eagle and Child.”Today the tradition remains unchanged largely out of respect for the past, but many pub signs do have some functionality. Remote country pubs often use signboards to point the way to their doors from more trafficked(可贩卖的)paths. It’s a part of British culture that’s rapidly disappearing — more than 20,000 pubs have closed since 1980—but for now there are still more than enough around that you can take a moment to appreciate the history and symbolism behind a pub’s sign the next time you see one.28. What is special about British pub signs?A. They copy famous artB. They show British lifeC. They have unique picturesD. They include the history of the pub。

I could now hear the sound of the fire, which was only a mile or two away. I got into my car and drove down the road. The smoke was thick and at times it was difficult to see the road. Animals were running across the road, trying to escape from the fire. Five miles down the road I came to a long bridge over the river. Once on the other side, I knew I was safe.参考答案:【试题解析】根据对话中男士所说“Allthestudentsturnedintheirpapersyesterdayexceptyou.”可知。

The influence of the Sahara.D. Its location of the center of a desert.23. Which city holds the record of the highest temperature?A. Ahvaz.B. Bangkok.C. Timbuktu.D. Kuwait City.BThe other day I was shopping at the local Chinese grocery store. There was a line at the fish counter, but only one staff person was there to take care of the customers. Some customers ordered quite an amount of fish for that staff person to work on. At last I was the second in line: all I wanted was a couple of crabs and should get out of there in no time.Noticing it was very busy at the fish counter, another staff person came over to help. I was ready to be served, but the staff person went to the end of the line and began to help a couple of ladies with snail (蜗牛). The customers in front of me, being served, turned around and looked at me sympathetically and the customer behind me called to the staff person, “You should start here,” pointing at me. He was, well, ignored.I f someone asked me, “What is the most important rule to follow in America?” I would reply without hesitation. “Wait your turn at all times.” Wherever you go here in this country, you will find people waiting in a line quietly to get anything: whether in th e supermarkets, department stores, bus stops, or gas stations, it’s just a matter of waiting your turn. In a larger sense, “wait your turn” is more than just a guideline — it is a very basic rule that reflects the fundamental value of the western cultures. But in some situations your turn does not always come basedoften happen, it did make me feel upset.24. What happened to the author at the store?A. He wasn’t served upon his order.B. Serve people as one likes.C. First come, later served.D. Wait until your turn comes.26. What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to?A. His belief.B. His culture.C. His experience.D. His rule.27. Why did the author write the text?A. To emphasize his kindness to others.B. To express his belief and his feelings.C. To show his disbelief in Queuing Rule.D. To introduce some western culture to us.COne of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school?Listen —Listen when they are talking. Don’t say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes it’s not necessary for you to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings.Help them — If your friend is ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don’t do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra pencil or pen with you to classes in case they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need.Be there for them — Be there for your friends to help make them feel better in hard times. Marilyn Monroe, a famous U.S. actor, once said, “I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control, but if you can’t stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve to be with me at my best.” Always remember this! If you don’t want to stay with your friends when they’re in hard times, then you don’t deserve to be with them when they’re having a good time!Make plans — Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for ice cream, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. By planning things together, you both can have a good time. And you’ll remember these things when you’re all old!28. While your friend is talking to you about his or her feelings, you should ______.A. give him or her some adviceB. calm him or her downC. just listen unless askedD. share your feelings as well29. When we provide help for our friends, we should ______.A. put them before ourselvesB. try to do everything for themC. change their bad habits firstD. ignore their faults30. What can we learn from Marilyn Monroe’s words?A. Life without a friend is death.B. A friend is easier lost than found.C. A man is known by his friends.D. A friend in need is a friend indeed.31. What is probably the best title for the test?A. How to find a good friend.B. How to be a good friend.C. How to help friends in trouble.D. How to make more friends.DEven plant can run a fever, especially when they’re under attack by insects or disease. But unlike human, plants can have their temperature taken from 3,000 feet away straight up. A decade ago, adopting the infrared(红外线) scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely(精确的) target pesticide(杀虫剂) spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which always includes plants that don’t have pest problems.E ven better, Paley’s Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to the eye. Fixed on a plane flown at 3,000 feet at night, an infrared scanner measured the heat sent out by crops. The data were transformed into a color-coded map showing where plants were running “fevers”. Farmers could then spot-spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide that they otherwise would. The bad news is that Paley’s company closed down in 1984, after only three years. Farmers resist ed the new technology and long-term supporters were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce and refinements(改进) in infrared scanning, Paley hopes to get back into operation. Agriculture experts have no doubt that the technolo gy works. “This technique can be used on 75 percent of agricultural land in the United States,” says George Oerther of Texas A& M, who recently retired from the Department of Agriculture, thinks remote infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade. But only if Paley finds the financial support which he failed to obtain 10 years ago.32. Plants will give out an increased amount of heat when they are _____.A. facing an infrared scannerB. sprayed with pesticidesC. exposed to extreme sun raysD. in poor physical condition33. In order to apply pesticide spraying precisely, we can use infrared scanning to _____.A. draw a color-coded mapB. evaluate the damage to the cropsC. locate the problem areaD. measure the size of the affected area34. The application of infrared scanning technology to agriculture met with some difficulties of _____.A. the lack of official supportB. its high costC. the lack of financial supportD. its failure to help increase production35. Infrared scanning technology may be brought back into operation because of _____.A. full support from agricultural expertsB. the forceful promotion by the Department of AgricultureC. the desire of farmers to improve the quality of their produceD. growing concern about the over use of pesticides on crops第二节(共5小题; 每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
