Never before had she tried out a sauna (桑拿). In Britain, anyone under six years old isn’t encouraged to do such things. In Finland, there’s one sauna for every three people. We had never thought about coming to Finland before, and hadn’t actually heard o f Tampere, the country’s third largest city. It’s actually less than two and a half hours away by plane, and has a population of 200,000. The Finns are now advertising Tampere as the perfect place for an all-year round holiday. We arrived to be greeted by a beautiful blanket of snow on the ground, but in the summer it’s hot, very green and perfect for outdoor trips. The city is small and pretty, with some beautiful churches, good museums and various kinds of souvenir shops. Shopping centers include a charming Christmas market and nearby in Lempaala, the Ideapark, with more than 100 stores and a great children’s activity center where you can leave the kids and shop until you are content. There is also a fine choice of restaurants and the woods are just a short drive away. There are also 3.000 lakes in the Tampere, with 200 of them inside the city limits. This makes for some truly amazing scenery, which may even be better viewed in summer: the December days are short and not particularly bright. Our trip was packed with activities which would attract families---and that included two trips to a sauna which was in the middle of the woods, at Villa Amanda, around an hour away from the city center. It is a beautiful, traditional Finnish house, located on a lake which was half-iced over whenwe arrived---and easily suitable for a couple of families to rent. We drank wine and admired the views before trying out the villa’s personal sauna, which my daughter enjoyed so much that she had to be dragged away from.1.Why did the author’s daughter look so rosy?A.Because she had drunk wine.B.Because she was a little shy.C.Because she had just come out of a sauna.D.Because she was a little frozen.2.The Ideapark is a place where .A.customers can have a good dinner and shoppingB.children can enjoy themselves while their parents can shop freelyC.travelers can enjoy a short drive in the woodsD.there are many shops, museums and churches.3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.The author’s daughter has already turned six years old.B.The travelers will have a better time if they visit the city in winter.C.Villa Amanda is an expensive restaurant in the city.D.There are many beautiful lakes in Tempere.4.What does the passage mainly tell us?A.A winter trip to Finland.B.Different kinds of food in Finland.C.The popularity of saunas in Finland.D.Development of Finnish tourism.【答案】1.C2.B3.D4.A【解析】1.

I was lost in the sightseeing that afternoon, so I could hardly wait to meet the sunrise. In the next morning, we all jumped out of the bed very early at 3 o’clock and walked to the rocks by the seaside. In the first half an hour, we imagined how wonderful it would be when the first light came out through the thick clouds and how soft it would be when the light touched our skin, so we waited and waited. However, another half an hour later, I gradually lost my patience since there was nothing but the chilly darkness, and I felt that I was frozen to death. But my friends were still extremely cheerful.Nearly another one hour later, “Amazing!”, a word burst out from Judy and we all shouted to welcome the light orange greatness, which is really unbelievable. Until today, I dare say that it is the most impressive sunrise in my life. However, waiting in the morning darkness is also the one I can not wipe out forever.Waiting sometimes is really a hard thing for most of us as it needs patience and strong-willed determination, but what about the result after that? It might turn out to be pleased, unbelievable and satisfied. So, it is really worthwhile to wait for the best.

AMy father was a foreman(领班)of a sugar-cane plantation(甘蔗种植园)in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. My first job was to drive the oxen that ploughed the cane fields. Every day I would walk behind an ox, guiding him with a broomstick(扫帚柄). For $ 1 a day, I worked eight hours straight, with no food breaks. It was very tedious work, but it prepared me for life and taught me many lasting lessons. Because the plantation owners were always watching us, I had to be on time every day and work as hard as I could. I’ve never been late for any job since. I also learned about being resp ectful and faithful to the people one works for. More importantly, I earned my pay; it never entered my mind to say I was sick just because I didn’t want to work.I was only six years old, but I was doing a man’s job. Our family needed every dollar we coul d make because my father never earned more than $ 18 a week. Our home was a three-room wood shack with a dirty floor and no toilet. Nothing made me prouder than bringing home money to help my mother, father, two brothers and three sisters. This gave me self-confidence, one of the most important things a person can have. When I was seven, I got work at a golf course(赛场)near our house. My job was to stand down the fairway and spot the balls as they landed, so the golfers could find them. Losing a ball meant you were fired, so I never missed one. Some nights I would lie in bed and dream of making thousands of dollars by playing golf and being able to buy a bicycle. The more I dreamed, the more I thought. Why not? I made my first golf club out of tree branches and a piece of pipe. Then I hammered an empty tin can into the shape of a ball. And finally I dug two small holes in the ground and hit the ball back and forth. I practiced with thesame devotion and intensity. I learned working in the field — except now I was driving golf balls with club, not oxen with a broomstick.1. The underlined word “tedious” in Paragraph 2 most probably means _______.A. difficultB. boringC. interestingD. unusual2. The writer learned that_______ from his first job.A. he should work for those who he liked mostB. he should work longer than what he was expectedC. he should never fail to say hello to his ownerD. he should be respectful and faithful to the people he worked for3. _______ gave the writer self-confidence.A. Having a family of eight peopleB. Owning his own golf courseC. Bringing money back home to help the familyD. Helping his father with the work on the plantation4. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A. He wanted to be a successful golfer.B. He wanted to buy a golf course near his house.C. He was satisfied with the job he got on a plantation.D. He wanted to make money by guiding oxen with a broomstick.BSpeed reading is a necessary and vital skill in the Internet age. We skim over articles, e-mails and tweets(微博)to try to grasp key words and the essential meaning of the text. With so much information available through our electronic devices, it would be impossible to get through everything if we read word by word, line by line. But a new trend calls on people to unplug(拔掉电源插座)and enjoy reading slowly, one that claims to have benefits beyond intellectual stimulation(智力上的刺激)by speed reading.A recent story from The Wall Street Journal reported on a book club in Wellington, New Zealand, where members meet in a cafe and turn off their smart phones. They sink into comfortable chairs and read in silence for an hour.Unlike typical(一贯的)book clubs, the point of the slow reading club isn’t to exchangeideas about certain books, but to get away from electronic devices and read in a quiet, relaxed environment. According to the story, the Wellington book club is just one example of a movement started by book lovers who miss the traditional way of reading.Traditional readers, like Maura Kelly, say a regular reading habit sharpens the mind, improves concentration, reduces stress levels and deepens the ability to understand others. Some of these benefits have been backed up by science. For example, a study of 300 elderly people published by the journal Neurology last year showed that mature people who take part in activities that use their brain, such as reading, suffer less memory loss as they get older. Another study published last year in Science showed that reading novels in the traditional way helps people understand others’ mental states and beliefs—a key skill in building relationships.5. Speed reading is a necessary and vital skill in the Internet age because people______.A. have to grasp the meaning fasterB. have much more information to readC. no longer read word by word, line by lineD. must use their smartphones more frequently6. Members of the Wellington book club are expected to______.A. read peacefully for an hourB. make coffee for the other membersC. regularly swap ideas about booksD. turn off their smartphones for recharging7. According to the Neurology study, who is most likely to suffer memory loss?A. A 65-year-old man who rarely reads.B. A 79-year-old woman who reads regularly.C. A 17-year-old middle school student who seldom reads novels.D. A healthy 24-year-old university graduate who often plays games.8. What’s the author’s attitude towards the way of re ading slowly? __________A. DesperateB. NeutralC. PositiveD. IndifferentCI was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg last night, a distance of about eighty miles. It was late. Several times I got stuck behind a slow-moving truck on a narrow road with a solidwhite line on my left, and I was clinching (紧握) my fists with impatience. At one point along an open highway, I came to a crossroads with the traffic light. I was alone on the road by now, but as I approached the light, it turned red and I braked to stop. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. Not a car, no suggestion of headlights, but there I sat, waiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.I started wondering why I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of being arrested, because there were obviously no police around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.Much later that night, the question of why I'd stopped for that light came back to me. I think I stopped because it's part of an agreement we all have with each other. It's not only the law, but it's an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor it: we don't go through red lights. It's amazing that we ever trust each other to do the right thing, isn't it? And we do, too. Trust is our first tendency. We have to make a deliberate decision to mistrust someone or to be suspicious or skeptical. Those attitudes don't come naturally to us.It's a very good thing too, because the whole structure of our society depends on mutual (相互的)trust, not distrust. This whole thing around us would fall apart if we didn't trust each other most of the time. We do what we say we'll do; we show up when we say we'll show up; we deliver when we say we'll deliver; and we pay when we say we'll pay. We trust each other in these matters, and when we don't do what we've promised, it's far from the normal. It happens often that we don't act in good faith and in a trustworthy manner, but we still consider it unusual, and we're angry or disappointed with those badly-behaved people. Anyway I was so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night.9.Why did the author feel impatient while driving?A. Because he had already driven for a long time.B. Because it was too far away from his destination.C. Because something urgent happened in his family.D. Because he could not overpass a truck on a narrow road.10.The author stopped at the traffic light because _________ .A. there were passers-by crossing the roadB. some policemen were on duty just at that pointC. the trust between people influenced the authorD. there was potential danger11.What would happen if people didn't trust each other in most cases?A. A11 the things would run normally.B. The social system would be thrown into disorder.C. The social traditions would be abandoned.D. that we were wasting our fuel by buying prawns from Indonesia (7,000food miles )and carrots from South Africa (5,900food miles).Counting the number of miles traveled done by a product is a strange way of trying to tell the true situation of the environmental damage due to industry. Most food is transported around the world on container ships that are extremely energy efficient. It should be noticed that a ton of butter transported 25miles in a truck to a farmers'market doesn't necessarily use less fuel on its journey than a similar product transported hundreds of miles by sea.Besides, the idea of"food miles"ignores the amount of fuel used in the production. It is possible to cut down your food miles by buying tomatoes grown in Britain rather than those grown in Ghana. The difference is that the British ones will have been raised in heated greenhouse and the Ghanaian ones in the open sun. What is the idea of"food miles"does provide, however,is the chance to cut out Third World countries from First World food markets. The number of miles traveled by our food should,as I see it,be regarded as a sign of the success of the global trade system, not a sign of damage to the environment.9.The Food Commission is angry because it thinks that.A.UK wastes a lot of money importing food productsB.some imported goods causes environmental damageC.growing certain vegetables causes environmental damageD.people wasted energy buying food from other countries10.The phrase"food miles"in the passage refers to the distance.A.that a food product travels to a marketB.that a food product travels from one market to anotherC.between UK and other food producing countriesD.between a Third World country and a First World food market11.By comparing tomatoes raised in Britain and in Ghana, the author tries to explain that.A.British tomatoes are healthier than Ghanaian onesB.Ghanaian tomatoes taste better than tomatoes onesC.cutting down food miles may not necessarily save fuelD.protecting the environment may cost a lot of money12.From the passage we know that the author is most probably.A.a supporter of free global tradeB.a member of a Food CommissionC.a supporter of First World food marketsD.a member of an energy development group.13.Dog FancyCover Price:﹩59.88 Price:﹩12.00 (﹩1.00/issue)Details:Dog Fancy is information driven and provides opportunity for reader interaction.Every Colvin, said from the family home."So she took our car and drove up to Yale and said,‘You have to let me in.'""Impressed﹣﹣she was a National Merit (全国英才)finalist who had picked up Portuguese in Brazil﹣﹣Yale did, admitting her to the class of 1978,where she started writing for the Yale Daily News and decided to be a journalist,"her mother said.On Wednesday,Marie Colvin,56,an experienced journalist for The Sunday Times of London, was killed as Syrian forces shelled(炮击)the city of Homs. She was working in a temporary media center that was destroyed in the attack."She was supposed to 2011.The team compared death rate associated with cardiovascular disease across Europe. They found that Britain has one of the best records in Europe, with 342deaths as a result of heart disease per 100,000men in 2011,and 232per 100,000women.Some nations﹣﹣﹣including Ukraine,Macedonia and Moldova﹣see more than 1,000heart deaths per 100,000of the population.Overall, heart disease causes 45percent of all deaths across Europe, but only 27percent in the UK.The study, led by Dr Nick Townsend, showed that cardiovascular disease is mainly a disease of old age.But researchers said that across Europe it still causes more than 1.4million deaths in those aged under 75and nearly 700,000deaths in under 65s.Dr Townsend said:"Cardiovascular disease results in 49percent of deaths among women and 41per cent there is plenty of water in the UK"可知Food commission生气是因为英国有很多水,还要耗费很多燃料从国外进口水,这是很愚蠢的,故选D.10.A.解析:这是一道词义猜测题.根据"The water,it angrily argues in public, has traveled 10,000 food miles before it reaches Western customers"可知,商品运到目的地(Western customers)的距离,因此A为正确选项.11.C 解析:这是一道细节推断题.作者通过比较西红在英国和加纳的生长条件(在应该西红柿在温室里生长,而在加纳是在室外生长),说明减少了运输的能量消耗,但可能增加生产产品的能量消耗,所以减少食物运输公里未必能节省能源,故选C.12.A 解析:这是一道细节推断题.根据最后一句"The number of miles traveled by our food should,as I see it,be regarded as a sign of the success of the global trade system, not a sign of damage to the environment"可以知道作者认为全球贸易系统是成功的,对全球贸易系统是表示支持的,因此A为正确答案.13.Dog FancyCover Price:﹩59.88 Price:﹩12.00 (﹩1.00/issue)Details:Dog Fancy is information driven and provides opportunity for reader

AChinese female scientist Tu Youyou won the 2015 Nobel Prize in medicine on October 5 for her discoveries concerning a novel treatment against Malaria(疟疾). This is the first Nobel Prize given to a Chinese scientist for work carried out within China.Tu shared the prize with Irish-born William Campbell and Satoshi Omura of Japan, who were honored for their revolutionary anti-roundworm treatment. 84-year-old Tu is awarded this prize for her contribution to cutting the death rate of malaria, reducing patients’ suffering and promoting mankind’s he alth. Although she received several medical awards in the past, the 2015 Nobel Prize is definitely the most privilege reward that recognizes Tu’s dedication and perseverance in discovering artemisinin(青蒿素), the key drug that battles malaria-friendly parasites(寄生虫).However, her route to the honor has been anything but traditional. She won the Nobel Prize for medicine, but she doesn’t have a medical degree or a PhD. In China, she is even being called the “three-noes” winner: no medical degree, no doctorate, and she’s never worked overseas. No wonder her success has stirred China’s national pride and helped promote confidence of native Chinese scientists. The fact that Tu has none of these three backgrounds reminds us that science should be more accessible to all. One shall be able to become a scientist no matter what kind of background he or she comes from, as long as one dives into scientific research. There have been discussions on people who really love science but are never able to achieve much during their whole life. Their contributions can never be ignored. They work so hard to prove the wrong way so that the future researchers will be closer to the right one.As the first Chinese mainland Nobel Prize Winner of natural science award, Tu’s record-breaking winning also serves as a reminder to those who are too eager for instant success. Science is never about instant success. Tu spent decades on scientific research before its value is officially acknowledged. There is no way to measure how much one devotes to science and compare it with how much reward he or she may get.1. It can be concluded from the text that __________.A. Tu worked home and abroad to conduct her researchB. Tu got the Nobel Prize for her anti-roundworm treatmentC. The Nobel Prize is the first award to recognize her workD. Her discovery of artemisinin has helped to cut Malaria death rate2. The author seems to agree that a person who is more likely to become a scientist is the one with__________.A. a sense of national prideB. relevant academic knowledgeC. a desire to achieve successD. enthusiasm for scientific research3. In writing the passage, the author intends to ___________.A. inform readers of the news and make commentsB. discourage the pursuit of instant success in scienceC. remind readers of the principles of scientific researchD. praise the award winner and encourage scientific researchBLost iPhoneUnexpectedly, I lost my white iPhon5s in Midtown on Friday night,. An applicant accepted by Ad 4 will have to .A. be able to speak two languagesB. be a college graduateC. work every weekendD. look after two childrenCThe world is filled with smart, talented and gifted people. We meet them every day.A few days ago,my car was not running well.I pulled it into a garage, and the young mechanic had it fixed in just a few minutes. He knew what was wrong by simply listening to the engine.I was amazed. The sad truth is,great talent is not enough.I am constantly shocked at how little talented people earn.I heard the other day that less than 5 percent of Americans earn more than $100,000 a year.A business consultant who specializes in the medical trade was telling me how many doctors and dentists strugglefinancially. It was this business consultant who gave me the phrase,“They are one skill away from great wealth.”There is an old saying that goes,“Job means ‘just over broke(破产)’”.And unfortunately,I would say that the saying applies to millions of people.Because school does not think financial intelligence is intelligence, most workers“ live within their means”.They work and they pay the bills.Instead I recommend young people to seek work for what they will learn, more than what they will earn. When I ask the classes I teach,“How many of you can cook a better hamburger than McDonald’s?” almost all the students raise their hands.I then ask,“So if most of you can cook a better hamburger, how come McDonald’s makes more money than you?” The ans wer is obvious: McDonald’s is excellent at business systems. The reason why so many talented people are poor is that they focus on building a better hamburger and know little or nothing about business systems. The world is filled with talented poor people .They focus on perfecting their skills at building a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger.8.The author mentions the mechanic in the first paragraph that .A.he is just one of the talented people.B.he is ready to help others.C.he has a sharp sense of hearing.D.he knows little about car repairing.9.The underlined part in the third paragraph can be best replaced by .A.spend more than they can afford.B.do in their own way.C.live in their own circle.D.live within what they earn.10.Why do talented people earn so 1ittle according to the author?A.They don’t work hard enough.B.They lack financial intelligence.C.They don’t make full use of their talents.D.They have no specialized skills.11.The main purpose of the author is to tell us .A.how young people can find a satisfactory job.B.what schools should teach students.C.why so many talented people are poor.D.how McDonald’s makes much money.DWe know that many animals do not stay in one place . Birds , fish and other animals move from one place to another at a certain time . They move for different reasons : most of them move to find food more easily , but others move to get away from places that are too crowded .When cold weather comes , many birds move to warmer places to find food . Some fishes give birth in warm water and move to cold water to feed . The most famous migration(迁移)is probably the migration of fish , which is called “ salmon ” . This fish is born in fresh water but it travels many miles to salt water . There it spends its life . When it is old , it returns to its birthplace in fresh water . Then it gives birth and dies . In northern Europe , there is a kind of mouse . They leave their mountain homes when they become too crowded . They move down to the low land . Sometimes they move all the way to the seaside , and many of them are killed when they fall into the sea .Recently , scientists have studied the migration of a kind of lobster(龙虾). Every year , when the season of the bad weather arrives , the lobsters get into a long line and start to walk across the floor of the ocean . Nobody knows why they do this , and nobody knows where they go .So , sometimes we know why humans and animals move from one place to another , but at other times we don’t . Maybe living things just like to travel .12. Most animals move from one place to another at a certain time to __________ .A. give birthB. enjoy warmer weatherC. find food more easilyD. find beautiful places13. The fish called “ salmon ” spends a long time in __________ .A. salt waterB. riversC. fresh waterD. itsbirthplace14. The lobsters move __________ .A. to the fresh waterB. at a certain timeC. to the underseaD. to find more food15. What is the main idea of the passage ?A. Animals move to find food more easily .B. Cold weather makes animals move to warmer places .C. Living things like to travel.D. Living things move from one place to another for different reasons .

However, Vargas Llosa once said that “I feel very much an Arequipan”.He also spent some time in Piura, northern Peru (1945~1946).Vargas Llosa attended Leoncio Prado Military Academy (1950~1952), and Colegio Nacional San Miguel de Piura (1952), Peru.In 1955 he married Julia Urquidi; they divorced in 1964.From 1955 to 1957 Vargas Llosa studied literature and law at the University of San Marcos, Peru. Vargas Llosa moved to Paris because he felt that in Peru he could not earn his living as a serious writer. Although the boom of Latin American fiction in the 1960s opened doors to some authors for commercial success, the great majority of Peruvian writers suffered from the problems of the country's publishing industry. In France Vargas Llosa worked as Spanish teacher, journalist and broadcaster. From the late 1960s Vargas Llosa worked as a visiting professor at many American and European universities. In 1970 Vargas Llosa moved to Barcelona and five years later he settled back in Peru. Most of his novels are set in Peru.In addition to the Nobel Prize, Vargas Llosa has received many other honors. In France, it’s called “Poisson d’Avril” or “Fish of April.” In Scotland, the holiday is often called “Gowkie Day.” In Iraq, the holiday is called Kithbet Neesan or “April Lie.”History experts say people have celebrated April Fools’ Day for a long time. Some believe the tradition comes from the ancient Romans more than two thousand years ago. It was a day of playing games and pretending to be someone else.Others say the day for fooling began in France in 1564, when King Charles changed the yearly calendar. He moved New Year’s Day from April 1 to January 1. Many people did not know about the change because of communication problems back then. Some people continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1. Other people called them April Fools and played jokes on them.In the United Sta tes, April Fools’ Day is just a day of joking and playing tricks on friends. These kinds of jokes are also called pranks. These jokes typically end in the prankster shouting “April Fools’!”Simple pranks, like telling a friend a funny lie or making prank phone calls, are still common. But, major companies also get in on April Fools’ Day fun in a much bigger way. A few years ago, on April 1, Starbucks announced it was introducing new coffee cup sizes -- Plenta and Micra. The very large cups, bigger than a human head, remained useful for customers even after finishing all that coffee. According to Starbucks, the cups could be used as a rain hat, a pot for plants, or a lampshade. It did not take long for customers to catch on to the prank! More and more people use social media or smart phone apps to play pranks on their friends on April Fools’ Day. One very annoying smart phone app, Cat Facts, sends funny facts about cats to your friends’ phones, every day.8.Why did some people keep the old New Year’s Day?A.It was known only by the government.B.They wanted to be different from others.C.They like the old celebration.D.They didn’t know the time changed.9.Americans celebrated April Fool’s Day to _________.A.improve the friendship between friends.B.have fun and play jokes on others.C.find a chance to give children gifts.D.escape the stress of their work.10.What is the meaning of the underlined words “get in on” in Paragraph 5? D.give up.11.What is the autho r’s purpose of writing the text?A.To introduce a new festival.B.To tell a story on April Fool’s Day.C.To introduce April Fool’s Day.D.To express love to the friends. Most advertising in ancient times was word-of-mouth, that is, people liked something and told others about it. But even then, people advertised by putting inscriptions (题字) on walls, for example to display political slogans and to offer household goods for sale. Also, in Rome and Greece, in ancient times, it was common for people to use papyrus, a kind of paper, to advertise things they had lost or found. The tradition of wall or rock painting as a way of advertising goods is even more ancient.Painting developed in the 15th and 16th centuries, and this increased the forms of advertising. Handbills — small printed notices and advertisements — became common. Then, by the 17th century, advertisements started appearing in weekly newspapers in England. In the 19th century mail order catalogues appeared, promoting all kinds of goods. Finally, advertisements in the 1960s became more creative and more interesting. Also, they began to draw attention to the ‘unique selling points', the USPs of products. These are the qualities that make a product different from competitors' products. These days, advertisers have come up with new ways of promoting their products. For example, product placement is now common. This is advertising in TV programmes or films by having a character, preferably played by a famous actor, use a particular product. For example, Tom Cruise's character in the movie, Minority Report, had a computer with the Nokia logo (商标) on it, and his watch was clearly made by Bulgari.TV commercials are a very effective medium for advertisers, though these are very expensive. If an organization wants to have a 30-second TV advert during the annual Superbowl game in the United States, they have to pay about $2.5 million.Perhaps the most interesting development is the use of famous personalities to endorse (代言) a product. The basketball player, Michael Jordan, endorsed Nike products and wore them while playing.Getting well-known personalities to endorse a product can be very expensive, but endorsements certainly increase a product's sales, especially if the personality has a positive image in the eyes of the public.12.What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?A.The influence of advertising.B.The development of advertising.C.Ways of advertising in ancient times.D.Types of product advertising in ancient times.13.Which of the following is TRUE about advertisements in the 1960s?A.They were complicated and entertaining.B.They contained quite a lot of information.C.They were mainly shown in TV programmes.D.They focused on the special features of products.14.In product placement, advertisers tend to use .A.cartoon characters. B.intelligent people.C.fictional characters. D.popular actors or actresses.15.What is the benefit of endorsements?A.They are not expensive. B.They are fairly interesting.C.They promote product sales. D.They pass on positive messages. Pronunciation TipsThese English pronunciation tips will help you get the most out of your Pronunciation Power program.★16.For example, “threw” and “through”, although spelled differently, are pronounced the same. Also, identical(相同的)letters or letter clusters(字母组合)in words do not always produce the same sound. For example,we cannot remember everyone we have ever met or what we did on every single day of our lives. However, there are some people who do have prodigious memories. These people have a rare condition known as savant syndrome Savants suffer from a developmental disorder, but they also exhibit great talents that contrast(显出差异) sharply with their physical and mental disabilities.Kim Peek (1951-2009) was a savant who lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. He was born with damage to parts of his brain, but it seemed that other parts of his brain, particularly those relating to memory, became over-developed.Peek’s unique abilities appeared at a very early age. When he was just 20 months old, he could already remember every book that was read to him. Peek could read two pages of a book at the same time---one page with the right eye and one with the left---in less than 10 seconds and remember everything he read. By the time he died, Peek had memorized more than 9,000 books. He could remember all the names and numbers in a variety of telephone books. He could remember thousands of facts about history, literature, geography and sports.Dr. David Treffert, an expert on savant syndrome, once described Peek as “a livin g Google” because of his astonishing ability to memorize and connect facts. However, at the same time, Peek was unable to carry out simple tasks, such as brushing his hair or getting dressed, and he needed others to help him. In 1989, the movie Rain Man won the Oscar for best Picture. The main character in the movie, played by Dustin Hoffman, was based on Kim Peek’s life. He started to appear on television, where he would amaze audiences by correctly answering difficult questions on different topics. Peek became world famous, and he and his father began touring widely to talk about overcoming disabilities. Another time, she battled extreme winds and Guppy surfed down 8-meter-high waves.Out on the open sea alone, she also got used to living without a fridge, a flushing(用水冲洗)toilet, and a hot shower.“As a human being you don’t need much,” she told . “ They might make life more comfortable, but you really don’t need them to be happy.”In fact, her outlook on life was shaped by the trip. “I wanted the storms. I wanted the calms. I wanted to feel loneliness,” she told The New York Times. “And now I know all these things. It’s the end of the dream I had as a child, and it’s the beginning of my life as a sailor.”28. According to the text, in which year did Dekker begin her journey of 50,004 kilometers at sea?A.
