考研英语二新题型B练习文稿归稿存档编号:[KKUY-KKIO69-OTM243-OLUI129-G00I-FDQS58-英语二新题型练习(一)Directions:Read the following text and answer the questions by reading information from the left column that corresponds to each of the marked details givenin the right column. There are two extra choices in the right column. Make your answer on ANSWER SHEET 1. (10 points)“University history, the history of what man has accomplished in the world, is at bottom the History of the Great Men who have worked here,” wrote the Victorian Thomas Carlyle Well, not any more it is not.Suddenly, Britain looks to have fallen out with its favorite historical form. This could be no more than a passing literary craze, but it also points to a broader truth about how we now approach the past: less concerned with learning from our forefathers and more interested in feeling their pain. Today, we want empathy, not inspiration. From the earliest days of the Renaissance, the writing of history meant recounting the exemplary lives of great men. In 1337, Petrarch began work on his rambling writing Debins Illustribus-on Famous Men, highlighting the virtus (or virtue) of classical heroes. Petrarch celebrated their greatness in conquering fortune and rising to the top. This was the biographical tradition which Niccolo Machiavelli turned on its head. In The Prince, he championed cunning, ruthlessness, and boldness, rather than virtue, mercy and justice, as the skills of successful leaders.Over time, the attributes of greatness shifted. The Romantics commemorated the leading painters and author of their day, stressing the uniqueness of the artist’s person experience rather than public glory. By contrast, the Victorian author Samuel Smile wrote self-Help as a catalogueof the worthy lives of engineers, industrialists and explorers. “The valuable examples which they furnish of the power of self -help, of patient purpose resolute working and steadfast integrity, issuing in the formationof truly noble and manly character, exhibit.” wrote Smile, “what it is in the power of each to accomplish for himself.” His biographies of James Watt, Richard Arkwright and Josian Wedgwood were held up as beacons toguide the working man through his difficult life. This was all a bit bourgeois for Thomas Carlyle, who focused his biographies on the truly heroic lives of Martin Luther, Oliver Cromwell and Napoleon Bonaparte. These epochal figures represented lives hard to imitate, but to be acknowledged as possessing higher authority than mere mortals. Not everyone was convinced by such bombast. “The history of allhitherto existing society is the history of class struggles,” wrote Marx and Engel in The Communist Manifesto. For them, history did nothing, it possessed no immense wealth nor waged battles: “It is man, living man who does all that.” And history should be the story of the masses and their record of struggle, As such, it needed to appreciate the economic realities, the social contexts and power relations in which each epoch stood. For:“Men make their own history, but they do not make it just as theyplease; they do not make it under circumstances chosen by themselves, but under circumstances directly found, given and transmitted from the past.”This was the tradition which revolutionized our appreciation of the past. In place of Thomas Carlyle, Britain nurtured Christopher Hill, EP Thompson and Eric Hobsbawm. History from below stood alongside biographies of great men. Whole new realms of understanding - from gender to race to cultural studies - were opened up as scholars unpicked the multiplicity of lost societies. And it transformed public history too: downstairs becamejust as fascinating as upstairs.练习(二)Directions:Read the following text and answer the questions by choosing the most suitable subheading from the list A-G for each numbered paragraphs (41-45). There are two extra subheadings which you do not need to use. Mark your answers on the ANSWER SHEET. (10 points)A. Be sillyB. Have funC. Ask for helpD. Express your emotions.E. Don’t overthink itF. Be easily pleasedG. Notice thingsAct Your Shoe Size, Not Your Age.(1) As adults, it seems that we’re constantly pursuing happiness, often with mixed results. Yet children appear to have it down to an art-and for the most part they don’t need self-help books or therapy. Instead, they look after their wellbeing instinctively and usually more effectively than we do as grownups. Perhaps it’s time to learn a few lessons from them.41___________.(2) What does a child do when he’s sad He cries. When he’s angry He shouts. Scared Probably a bit of both. As we grow up, we learn to control our emotions so they are manageable and don’t dictate our behaviours, which is in many ways a good thing. But too often we take this process too far and end up suppressing emotions, especially negative ones. That’s about as effective as brushing dirt under a carpet and can even make us ill. What we feel appropriately and then-again, like children-move on.42__________.A couple of Christmases ago, my youngest stepdaughter, who was 9 years old at the time, got a Superman T-shirt for Christmas. It cost less than afiver but she w as overjoyed, and couldn’t bigger house or better car will be the magic silver bullet that will allow us to finally be content, but the reality is these things have little lasting impact on our happiness levels. Instead, being grateful for small things every day is a much better way to improve wellbeing.43__________.Have you ever noticed how much children laugh If we adults could indulge in a bit of silliness and giggling, we would reduce the stress hormones in our bodies, increase good hormones like endorphins, improve blood flow to our hearts and ever have a greater chance of fighting off infection. All of which would, of course, have a positive effect on our happiness levels.44__________.The problem with being a grownup is that there’s an awful lot of serious stuff to deal with-work, mortgage payments, figuring out what to cook for dinner. But as adults we also have the luxury of being able to control our own diaries and it’s important that we schedule in time to enjoy the thing we love. Those things might be social, sporting, creative or completely random (dancing around the living room, anyone)-it doesn’t matter, so long as they’re enjoyable, and not likely to have negative side effects, such as drinking too much alcohol or going on a wild spending sp ree if you’re on a tight budget.45__________.Having said all of the above, it’s important to add that we shouldn’t try too hard to be happy. Scientists tell us this can back fire and actually have a negative impact on our wellbeing. As the Chinese philosopher Chuang Tzu is reported to have said: “Happiness is the absence of striving for happiness.” And in that, once more, we need to look to the example of our children, to whom happiness is not a goal but a natural byproduct of the way they live.练习(三)Directions:You are going to read a list of headings and a text. (10 points)[A] Live like a peasant[B] Balance your diet[C] Shopkeepers are your friends[D] Remember to treat yourself[E] Stick to what you need[F] Planning is evervthing[G] Waste not, want notThe hugely popular blog the Skint Foodie chronicles how Tony balanceshis love of good food with living on benefits. After bills, Tony has £60 a week to spend, £40 of which goes on food, but 10 years ago he was earning £130,000 a I year working in corporate communications and eating atLondon's betft restaurants'" at least twice a week. Then his marriagefailed, his career burned out and his drinking became serious. "The community mental health team saved my life. And I felt like that again, toa certain degree, when people responded to the blog so well. It gave me the validation and confidence that I'd lost. But it's still a day-by-day thing." Now he's living in a council flat and fielding offers from literary agents. He's feeling positive, but he'll carry on blogging - not abouteating as cheaply as you can - "there are so many people in a much worse state, with barely any money to spend on food" - but eating well on a budget. Here's his advice for economical foodies.41._____________________Impulsive spending isn't an option, so plan your week's menu in advance, making shopping lists for your ingredients in their exact quantities. Ihave an Excel template for a week of breakfast, lunch and dinner. Stop laughing: it's not just cost effective but helps you balance your diet. It's also a good idea to shop daily instead of weekly, because, being-human, you'll sometimes change your mind about what you fancy.42____________________________________________________________This is where supermarkets and thci; anonymity come in handy. With them, there's not the same embarrassment as when buying one carrot in a little greengrocer. And if you plan properly, you'll know that you only need, say, 350g of shin of beef and six rashers of bacon, not whatever weight is pre-packed in the supermarket chiller.43_________You may proudly claim to only have frozen peas in the freezer - that'snot good enough. Mine is filled with leftovers, bread, stock, meat and fish. Planning ahead should eliminate wastage, but if you have surplus vegetables you'll do a vegetable soup, and all fruits threatening to "go off' will be cooked or juiced.44___________________________________Everyone says this, but it really is a top tip for frugal eaters. Shopat butchers, delis and fish-sellers regularly, even for small things, andbe super friendly. Soon you'll feel comfortable asking if they've any knuckles of ham for soups and stews, or beef bones, chicken carcasses andfish heads for stock which, more often than not, Theyil let you have for free.45__________________You won't be eating out a lot, but save your pennies and once every few months treat yourself to a set lunch at a good restaurant - £1.75 a weekfor three months gives you £21 - more than" enough for a three-courselunch at Michelin-starred Arbutus. It's £16.95 there - or £12.99 for a large pizza from Domino's: I know which I'd rather eat.练习(四)Directions:Read the following text and decide whether each of the statements istrue or false. Choose T if the statement is true or F it the statement isnot true. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET1.(10 points)Copying Birds May Save Aircraft FuelBOTH Boeing and Airbus have trumpeted the efficiency of their newest aircraft, the 787 and A350 respectively. Their clever designs andlightweight composites certainly make a difference. But a group of researchers at Stanford University, led by Ilan Kroo, has suggested that airlines could take a more naturalistic approach to cutting jet-fuel use, and it would not require them to buy new aircraft. The answer, says Dr Kroo, lies with birds. Since 1914, and a seminal paper by a German researcher called Carl Wieselsberger, scientists have known that birds flying in formation—a V-shape, echelon or otherwise—expend less energy. The air flowing over a birds wings curls upwards behind the wingtips, a phenomenon known as up wash. Other birds flying in the up wash experience reduced drag, and spend less energy propelling themselves. Peter Lissaman, an aeronautics expert who was formerly at Caltech and the University of Southern California ,has suggested that a formation of 25birds might enjoy a range increase of 71%.When applied to aircraft, the principles are not substantially different. Dr Kroo and his team modelled what would happen if three passenger jets departing from Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas were to rendezvous over Utah, assume an inverted V-formation, occasionally swap places so allcould have a turn in the most favourable positions, and proceed to London. They found that the aircraft consumed as much as 15% less fuel (with a concomitant reduction in carbon-dioxide output). Nitrogen-oxide emissions during the cruising portions of the flight fell by around a quarter. There are, of course, kinks to be worked out. One consideration is safety, or at least the perception of it. Would passengers feel comfortable travelling in convoy Dr Kroo points out that the aircraft could be separated by several nautical miles, and would not be in the unnervingly cosy groupings favoured by display teams like the Red Arrows. A passenger peering out of the window might not even see the other planes. Whether the separation distances involved would satisfy air-traffic-control regulations is another matter, although a working group at the International Civil Aviation. Organisation has included the possibility of formation flying in a blueprint for new operational guidelines. It remains to be seen how weather conditions affect the air flows that make formation flight more efficient. In zones of increased turbulence, the planes’ wakes will decay more quickly and the effect will diminish. Dr Kroo says this is one of the areas his team will investigate further. It might also be hard for airlines to co-ordinate the departure times and destinations of passenger aircraft in a way that would allow them to gain from formation flight. Cargo aircraft, in contrast, might be easier to reschedule, as might routine military flights. As it happens, America’s armed forces are on the case already. Earlier this year the country’s Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency announced plans to pay Boeing to investigate formation flight, though the programme has yet to begin. There are reports that some military aircraft flew in formation when they were low on fuel during the second world war, but Dr Lissaman says they are apocryphal. “My father was an RAF pilot and my cousin the skipper of a Lancaster lost over Berlin,” he adds. So he should know.41. Findings of the Stanford University researchers will promote the sales of new Boeing and Airbus aircraft.42. The upwash experience may save propelling energy as well as reducing resistance.43.Formation flight is more comfortable because passengers can not see the other planes.44. The role that weather plays in formation flight has not yet been clearly defined.45. It has been documented that during World War II, America’s armed forces once tried formation flight to save fuel.练习(五)Directions: Read the following text and answer the questions by finding information from the right column that corresponds to each of the marked details given in the left column. There are two extra choices in the right column. Mark your answer on ANSWER SHEET 1. (10 points)Leading doctors today weigh in on the debate over the government’s role in promoting public health by demanding that ministers impose “fat taxes” on unhealthy food and introduce cigarette-style warnings to children about the dangers of a poor diet. The demands follow comments made last week by the health secretary, Andrew Lansley, who insisted the government could not force people to make healthy choices and promised to free businesses from public health regulations. But senior medical figures want to stop fast-food outlets opening near schools, restrict advertising of products high in fat, salt or sugar, and limit sponsorship of sports events by fast-food producers such as McDonald’s.They a rgue that government action is necessary to curb Britain’s addiction to unhealthy food and help halt spiraling rates of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Professor Terence Stephenson, president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said that the consumption of unhealthy food should be seen to be just as damaging as smoking or excessive drinking.“Thirty years ago, it would have been inconceivable to have imagined a ban on smoking in the workplace or in pubs, and yet that is what we have now. Are we willing to be just as courageous in respect of obesity I would suggest that we should be,” said the leader of the UK’s children’s doctors.Lansley has alarmed health campaigners by suggesting he wants industry rather than government to take the lead. He said that manufacturers ofcrisps and candies could play a central role in the Change4Life campaign, the centerpiece of government efforts to boost healthy eating and fitness. He has also criticized the celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s high-profile attempt to improve school lunches in England as an example of how “lecturing” people was not the best way to change their behaviour.Stphenson suggested potential restrictions could include banning TV advertisements for foods high in fat, salt or sugar before 9 pm andlimiting them on billboards or in cinemas, “If we were really bold, wemight even begin to think of high-calorie fast food in the same way as cigarettes-by setting strict limits on advertising, product placement and sponsorship of sports events,” he said.Such a move could affect firms such as McDonald’s, which sponsors the youth coaching run by the Football Association. Fast-food chains shouldalso stop offering “inducements” such as toys, cute animals and mobile phone credit to lure young customers, Stephenson said.Professor Dinesh Bhugra, president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said: “If children are taught about the impact that food has on their growth, and that some things can harm, at least information is available up front.”He a lso urged councils to impose “fast-food-free zones” around schools and hospitals-areas within which takeaways cannot open.练习(六)Part BDirections:Read the following text and answer the questions by choosing the most suitable subheading from the list A-G for each numbered paragraph (41-45).There are two extra subheadings which you do not need to use. Make your answers on the ANSWER SHEET. (10 points)[A]You are not alone[B]Experience helps you grow[C]Pave your own unique path[D]Most of your fears are unreal[E]Think about the present moment[F]Don’t fear responsibility for your life[G]There are many things to be grateful forSome Old Truths to Help You Overcome Tough TimesUnfortunately, life is not a bed of roses. We are going through life facing sad experiences. Moreover, we are grieving various kinds of loss: a friendship, romantic relationship or a house .Hard times may hold you down at what usually seems like the most inopportune time, but you should remember that they won’t last forever. When our time of mourning is over, we press forward, stronger with a greater understanding and respect for life. Furthermore, these losses make us mature and eventually move us toward future opportunities for growth and happiness. I want to share these old truths I’ve learned along the way.41.Fear is both useful and harmful. This normal human reaction is used to protect us by signaling danger and preparing us to deal with it. Unfortunately, people create inner barriers with a help of exaggerating fears. My favorite actor Will Smith once said, “Fear is not real. It is a product of thoughts you create. Do not misunderstand me. Danger is very real. But fear is a choice.” I do completely agree that fears are just the product of our luxuriant imagination.42.If you are surrounded by problems and cannot stop thinking about the past, try to focus on the present moment. Many of us are weighed down by the past or anxious about the future. You may feel guilt over your past, but you are poisoning the present with the things and circumstances you cannot change. Value the present moment and remember how fortunate you are to be alive. Enjoy the beauty of the world around and keep the eyes open to see the possibilities before you. Happiness is not a point of future and not a moment from the past, but a mindset that can be designed into the present.43.Sometimes it is easy to feel bad because you are going through tough times. You can be easily caught up by life problems that you forget to pause and appreciate the things you have. Only strong people prefer to smile and value their life instead of crying and complaining about something.44.No matter how isolated you might feel and how serious the situation is, you should always remember that you are not alone. Try to keep in mind that almost everyone respects and wants to help you if you are trying to make a good change in your life, especially your dearest and nearest people. You may have a circle of friends who provide constant good humor, help and companionship. If you have no friends or relatives, try to participate in several online communities, full of people who are always willing to share advice and encouragement.45.Today many people find it difficult to trust their own opinion and seek balance by gaining ivity from external sources. This way you devalue your opinion and show that you are incapable of managing your own life. When you are struggling to achieve something important you should believe inyourself and be sure that your decision is the best. You live in your skin, think your own thoughts, have your own values and make your own choices.答案练习(一)41.【答案】A【解析】本题答案锁定在第三自然段,第二行讲到“Petrarchbegan...highlighting the virtue of classical heroes” 即彼特拉克在他的书中强调古典英雄的美德。

(10 points) The making of weathervanes (devices fixed on the top of buildings to show directions of the wind) is an ancient skill, going back to early Egyptian times. Today the craft is still very much alive in the workshop that Graham Smith has set up. He is one of the few people in the country who make hand-cut weathervanes. Graham’s designs are individually created and tailored to the spec ific requirements of his customers. “That way I can produce a unique personalized item,” he explains, “A lot of my customers are women buying presents for their husbands. They want a distinctive gift that represents the man’s business or leisure interests.”It’s all a far cry from the traditional cock, the most common design for weathervanes. It was not a cock but a witch on a broomstick that featured on the first weathervane Graham ever made. Friends admired his surprise present for his wife and began asking him to make vanes for them. “I realized that when it came to subjects that could be made into them, the possibilities were limitless,” he says.(41)_____________.That was five years ago and he has no regrets about his new direction. “My previous work didn’t have an artistic element to it, whereas this is exciting and creative,”he says. “I really enjoy the design side.”(42) _____________.Graham also keeps plenty of traditional designs in stock, since they prove as popular as the one-offs. “It seems that people are attracted to handcrafting,”Graham says. “They welcome the opportunity to acquire something a little bit different.”(43) _____________.“I have found my place in the market. People love the individuality and I get a lot of satisfaction from seeing a nondescript shape turn into something almost lifelike,”he says.(44) _____________.“And nowadays, with more and more people moving to the country, individuals want to put an exclusive finishing touch to their properties. It has been a boost to crafts like mines,”(45) _____________.American and Danish buyers in particular are showing interest. “Pricing,”he explains, “depends on the intricacy of the design.”His most recent request was for a curly-coated dog. Whatever the occasion, Graham can create a gift with a difference.[A] Graham has become increasingly busy, supplying flat-packed weathervanes to clients worldwide.[B] Graham decided to concentrate his efforts on a weathervane business. He had served an apprenticeship as a precision engineer and had worked in that trade for 15 years when he and his wife, Liz, agreed to swap roles—she went out to work as an architectural assistant and he stayed at home to look after the children and build up the business.[C] Last month, a local school was opened with his galleon ship weathervane hoisted above it.[D] “For centuries, weathervanes have kept communities in touch with the elements, signaling those shifts in wind direction that bring about changes in the weather,”he explains.[E] Graham has no plans for expansion, as he wants to keep the business as a rural craft.[F] Graham has now perfected over 100 original designs. He works to very fine detail, always seeking approval for the design of the silhouette from the customer before proceeding with the hand-cutting.答案41.B 42.F 43.E 44.D 45.A总体分析本文通过介绍格雷汉姆的个人经历说明制作风向标这种传统手工艺在现代社会又焕发了生机。

Online learning allows individuals to balance their academic pursuits with their personal lives.Secondly, online learning promotes self-discipline and independence. Unlike traditional classroom learning, where students have constant supervision, online learners are responsible for managing their own time and staying motivated. This fosters a sense of self-reliance and encourages individuals to take ownership of their education.Furthermore, online learning offers a wider range of course options. Students can choose from a variety of subjects and specializations, regardless of their geographical location. This opens up opportunities for individuals who may not have access to certain courses or educational institutions in their local area. However, there are also drawbacks to online learning. One of the main challenges is the lack of face-to-face interaction with instructors and peers. In a traditional classroom setting, students can ask questions and participate in discussions, which enhances the learning experience. Online learners may miss out on this interactive aspect of education. In conclusion, online learning provides flexibility, promotes self-discipline, and offers a wide range of course options. While it may have its limitations, it is clear that online learning has become a valuable and accessible mode of education for many students.三、写作任务Topic: The Impact of Social Media on SocietyIntroduction:Social media has become an integral part of modern society, with millions of people using platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter on a daily basis. While social media offers numerous benefits, it also has a profound impact on society. This essay will explore the positive and negative effects of social media on various aspects of our lives.Body Paragraph 1 - Communication:One of the key benefits of social media is its ability to facilitate communication. Platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp allow people to connect and share information instantly, regardless of their geographical locations. This has greatly enhanced global connectivity and fostered the exchange of ideas.Body Paragraph 2 - Information Sharing:Social media also plays a significant role in spreading information and raising awareness about important issues. News articles and videos can be easily shared and accessed by millions of people, often leading to increased public engagement and activism. However, the widespread dissemination of information also raises concerns about the accuracy and reliability of the content.Body Paragraph 3 - Personal Relationships:On the other hand, the excessive use of social media can negatively impact personal relationships. Spending excessive time on social mediaplatforms can lead to decreased face-to-face interactions, affecting the quality of interpersonal relationships. Additionally, the cultivation of online personas can create a false sense of connection, leading to feelings of loneliness and isolation.Body Paragraph 4 - Mental Health:Social media has been linked to various mental health issues, including depression and anxiety. The constant exposure to carefully curated images and idealized lifestyles on platforms like Instagram can contribute to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. Cyberbullying is also a prevalent issue on social media, further exacerbating mental health problems. Conclusion:Social media has revolutionized the way we communicate, share information, and build relationships. While it offers numerous benefits, such as instant communication and information access, it also comes with drawbacks, including the potential for decreased personal interactions and negative impacts on mental health. It is crucial for individuals to strike a balance in their social media usage and be mindful of its effects on their well-being.。

Those things might be social, sporting, creative or completely random(dancing around the living room,anyone?)--it doesn't matter,so long as they're enjoyable, and not likely to have negative side effects, such as drinking too much alcohol or going on a wild spending spree if you're on a tight budget.3)中心词:文中反复高频出现的词英语二2015[A]You are not alone[B]Don’t fear responsibility for your life[C]Pave your own unique path[D]Most of your fears are unreal[E]Think about the present moment[F]Experience helps you grow[G]There are many things to be grateful for42._______________________________If you are surrounded by problems and cannot stop thinking about the past, try to focus on the present moment. Many of us are weighed down by the past or anxious about the future. You may feel guilt over your past, but you are poisoning the present with the things and circumstances you cannot change.Value the present moment and remember how fortunate you are to be alive.Enjoy the beauty of the world around and keep the eyes open to see the possibilities before you. Moreover,we are grieving various kinds of loss:a friendship,a romantic relationship or a house. Hard times may hold you down at what usually seems like the most inopportune time, but you should remember that they won’t last forever. When our time of mourning is over,we press forward, stronger with me.Danger is very real. But fear is a choice.”I do completely agree that fears are just the product of our luxuriant imagination.[A]You are not alone[B]Don’t fear responsibility for your life[C]Pave environment, the way you present yourself has an impact. This is especially true in first impressions.According to research from Princeton University, people assess your competence, trustworthiness, and likeability in just a tenth of a second, solely based on the way you look. The difference between today’s workplace and the“dress for success”era is that the range of options is so much broader.Norms have evolved and fragmented. In some settings, red sneakers or dress T-shirts can convey status;in others not so much.Plus, whatever image we present is magnified by social-media services like LinkedIn.Chances are, your headshots are seen muchmore often now than a decade or two lennials,it seems, face the paradox of being the least formal generation yet the most conscious of style and personal branding. It can be confusing. So how do we navigate this? How do we know when to invest in an upgrade? And what’s the best way to pull off one that enhances our goals? Here are some tips:41._______________________________As an executive coach,I’ve seen image upgrades be particularly helpful during transitions—when looking for a new job, stepping into a new or more public role,or changing work environments. If you’re in a period of change or just feeling stuck and in a rut,now may be a good time.If you’re not sure, ask for honest feedback from trusted friends, colleagues and professionals.Look for cues about how others perceive you.Maybe there’s no need for an upgrade and that’s OK.反复重复原则中不要忽略——虚词【插入阅读内容】2003Text249.The author believes that,in face of the challenge from communicate their message to the public in a compassionate, understandable way—in human terms, not in the language of molecular biology.②We need to make clear the connection between animal research and For Questions 41-45, choose the most suitable one from the list A-G to fit into each of the numbered blank. There are two extra choices, which do not fit in any of the blanks. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (10 points)42) _________________________. Nearly all of the fossils that we know were preserved in rocks formed by water action, and most of these are of animals that lived in or near water. Thus it follows that there must be many kinds of mammals, birds, and insects of which we know noting.43) _____________________________. There were also crab-like creatures, whose bodies were covered with a horny substance. The body segments each had two pairsof legs, one pair for walking on the sandy bottom, the other for swimming. The head was a kind of shield with a pair of pound eyes, often with thousands of lenses. They were usually an inch or two long but some were 2 feet.44) _________________________________. Of these, the ammonites are very interesting and important. They have a shell posed of many chambers, each representing a temporary home of the animal. As the young grew larger it grew a new chamber and sealed off the previous one. Thousands of these can be seen in the rocks on the Dorset Coast.45) _______________________________.About 75 million years ago the Age of Reptiles was over and most of the groups died out. The mammals quickly developed, and we can trace the evolution of many familiar animals such as the elephant and horse. Many of the later mammals, though now extinct, were known to primitive man and were featured by him in cave paintings and on bone carvings.[A] The shellfish have a long history in the rock and many different kinds are known.[B] Nevertheless, we know a great deal about many of them because their bones and shells have been preserved in the rocks as fossils, From them we can tell their size and shape, how they walked, the kind of food they ate.[C] The first animals with true backbones were the fishes, first known in the rocks of 375 million years ago. About 300 million years ago the hibians, the animals able to live both on land and in water, appeared. They were giant, sometimes 8 feet long, and many of them lived in the swy pools in which our coal seam, or layer, formed. The hibians gave rise to the reptiles and for nearly 150 million years these were the principal forms of life on land, in the sea, andin the air.[E] The earliest animals whose remains have been found were all very simple kinds and lived in the sea. Later forms are more plex, and among these are thesea-lilies, relations of the star-fishes, which hadlong arms and were attached by a long stalk to the sea bed, or to rocks.[F] When an animal dies, the body, its bones, or shell, may often be carried away by streams into lakes or the sea and there get covered up by mud. If the animal lived in the sea its body would probably sink and be covered with mud. More and more mud would fall upon it until the bones or shell bee embedded and preserved.[G] Many factors can influence how fossils are preserved in rocks. Remains of an organism may be replaced by minerals, dissolved by an acidic solution to leave only their impression, or simply reduced to a more stable form.[答案] 41. B 42. F 43. E 44. A 45. The first and the last paragraphs have beenplaced for you in Boxes. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (10 points)[A]“I just don’t know how to motivate them to do a better job. We’re in a budget crunch and I have absolutely no financial rewards at my disposal. In fact, we’ll probably have to lay some people off in the near future. It’s hard for me to make the job interesting and challenging because it isn’t —it’s boring, routine paperwork, and there isn’t much you can do about it.[B]“Finally, I can’t say to them that their promotions will hinge on the excellence of their paperwork. First of all, they know it’s not true. If their performance is adequate, most are more likely to get promoted just by staying on the force a certain number of years than for some specific outstanding act. Second, they were trained to do the job they do out in the streets, not to fill out forms. All through their career it is the arrests and interventions that get noticed.[D]“Some people have suggested a number of things like using conviction records as a performance criterion. However, we know that’s not fair—too many other things are involved. Bad paperwork increases the chance that you lose in court, but good paperwork doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll win. We triedsetting up team petitions based on the excellence of the reports, but the guys caught on to that pretty quickly. No one was getting any type of reward for winning the petition, and they figured why should they labor when there was no payoff.[E]“The problem occurs when they get back to the station. They hate to do the paperwork, and because they dislike it, the job is frequently put off or done inadequately. This lack of attention hurts us later on when we get to court. We need clear, factual reports. They must be highly detailed and unambiguous. As soon as one part of a report is shown to be inadequate or incorrect, the rest of the report is suspect. Poor reporting probably causes us to lose more cases than any other factor.[F]“So I just don’t know what to do. I’ve been groping in the dark in a number of years. And I hope that this seminar will shed some light on this problem of mine and help me out in my future work.”[G]A large metropolitan city gover____ent was putting on a number of seminars for administrators, managers and/or executives of various departments throughout the city. (10 points)[A] Watching related expenses and making wisechoice[B] Paying attention to details[C] Weighing your financial goals and expectationsfirst[D] Maintaining realistic expectations[E] Narrowing the search[F] Not too specialEating better. Exercising. Investing. There are a lot of things you know should be doing. The problem isthat getting started always seems to be the hardest part. For manyinvestors, mutual funds are a good way to go, but trying to sortthrough the number of available choices – now more than 10,000 –makes this important task appear overwhelmin g. Let’s look at someways to cut that number down to a reasonable size, as well as otherfactors to consider when selecting your first fund.41.Before you begin examining potentialinvestments, it’s important to take some time to assess your owngoals and risk tolerance. If you start with a clear objective in mind, as well as an understanding as to how you might react if yourinvestment loses money, you’ll be less likely to purchase a fundthat doesn’t fit your needs. And that’s what often leads to disappointment. It is important to look for funds that areappropriate for both your goals and your investmenttemperament.42.One way to begin your search for a good fund is touse the Morningstar star rating. The rating is a useful tool for narrowing the field to funds that have done a good job of balancingreturn and risk in the past. To assign ratings, Morningstar uses aformula that compares a fund’s risk-adjusted historical performancewith that of other funds within four rating groups – domesticstockfunds, international stock funds, taxable bond funds, and municipalbond funds.43.Funds that invest solely in a single marketsectors, called specialty funds, often have impressive returns andmay be great additions to a diversified portfolio. However, thesuccess of such funds depends largely on the fortunes of a particular market sector. Hence, specialty funds probably aren’tthe best way to start. For your first fund, look for a diversified stock fund that has exposure to different types ofstocks.44.Th ere’s no free lunch in fund investing: inaddition to the sales fees that some fund companies charge, fundinvestors must also pay management fees and trading costs.Unfortunately, you don’t necessarily get what you pay for –no onehas ever shown that more expensive funds provide greater returns.Look for funds with reasonable costs. The expense ratio, whichexpresses annual costs as a percentage amount, is probably the bestnumber to use when comparing mutual fund costs.45.Whatever the market does, try to take it instride. You’re in for the long haul, so don’t worry about themarket’s day-to-day gyrations. Relax and resist the temptation tomonitor your first investment daily. Check in on your mutual fundsonce a month, and give your portfolio a thorough exam every 6 to 12months. And consider adding to your fund each month. An automaticinvestment plan makes it a relatively painless process. Finally, remember that the ultimate measure ofyour success as an investor depends not on your owning the best-performing mutual fund. Only one fund will be the top performer over the next decade, and there’s no way to predict whichone it will be. Meeting your own financial goals should ultimatelybe the yardstick by which you measure your investmentsuccess.[答案]41.C 42.E43.F44.A45.D。

The first and last paragraphs of the text are not numbered. There is one extra heading which you do not need to use. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (10 points) [A] Analyzing your own taste [B] Being cautious when experimenting [C] Finding a model to follow [D] Getting the final look absolutely right [E] Learning to be realistic [F] Making regular conscious choices When we meet people for the first time, we often make decisions about them based entirely on how they look. And, of course it’s something that works both ways, for we too are being judged on our appearance. When we look good, we feel good, which in turn leads to a more confident and self-assured manner. People then pick up on this confidence and respond positively towards us. Undoubtedly, it’s what’s inside that’s important, but sometimes we can send out the wrong signals simply by wearing inappropriate clothing or not spending enough time thinking about how others see us. 41___________ For example, people often make the mistake of trying to look like someone else they’ve seen in a magazine, but this is usually a disaster as we all have our own characteristics. Stand in front of a full-length mirror and be honest with yourself about what you see. There is no need to dwell on your faults—we all have good points and bad points—but think instead about the best way to emphasize the good ones. 42___________ When selecting your clothes each day, think about who you’re likely to meet, where you’re going to be spending most of your time and what tasks you are likely to perform. Clearly, some outfits will be more appropriate todifferent sorts of activity and this will dictate your choice to an extent. However, there’s no need to abandon your individual taste completely. After all, if you dress to please somebody else’s idea of what looks good, you may end up feeling uncomfortable and not quite yourself. 43___________ But to know your own mind, you have to get to know yourself. What do you truly feel good in? There are probably a few favourite items that you wear a lot—most people wear 20 per cent of their wardrobe 80 per cent of the time. Look at these clothes and ask yourself what they have in common. Are they neat and tidy, loose and flowing? Then look at the things hanging in your wardrobe that you don’t wear and ask yourself why. Go through a few magazines and catalogues and mark the things that catch your eye. Is there a common theme? 44___________ Some colors bring your natural colouring to life and others can give us a washed-out appearance. Try out new colours by all means, but remember that dressing in bright colours when you really like subtle neutral tones, or vice versa, will make you feel self-conscious and uncomfortable. You know deep down where your own taste boundaries lie. And although it’s good to challenge those sometimes with new combinations or shades, take care not to go too far all at once. 45___________ So, you’ve chosen an outfit that matches your style, your personality, your shape and your colouring. But does it fit? If something is too tight or too loose, you won’t achieve the desired effect, and no matter what other qualities it has, it won’t improve your appearance or your confidence. Sometimes, we buy things without thinking. Some people who dislike shopping grab the first thing they see, or prefer to use mail-order or the Internet. In all cases, if it doesn’t fit perfectly, don’t buy it, because the finer details are just as important as the overall style. Reappraising your image isn’t selfish because everyone who comes into contact with you will benefit. You’ll look better and you’ll feel a better person all round. And if in doubt, you only need to read Professor Albert Mehrabian’s book Silent Messages to remind yourself how important outward appearances are. His research showed that the impact we make on each other depend 55 per cent on how we look and behave, 38 per cent on how we speak and only 7 per cent on what we actually say. So, whateverstage you are at in your life, whatever role you play, isn’t it time you made the most of yourself? 答案 41.E 42.F 43.A 44.B 45.D 总体分析 本文是一篇关于个人着装的评论。

考研英语新题型练习题
Text 1Directions: You are going to read a text about the steps to ask for a raise, followed by a list of examples. Choose the best example from the list A-F for each numbered subheading (41- 45). There is one extra example which you do not need to use.So you’ve been with your company for a while and have been exceeding all of your manager’s expectations. You work hard, are a great team player, come up with new ideas to take the business further and are an all-around joy in the workplace. If you haven’t been promoted or been bumped up in salary automatically, it might be time to take the bull by the horns and approach this topic yourself. While asking for a raise makes many people uncomfortable and nervous, the situation can be a breeze if handled correctly. The following are a few steps to follow to make sure your request does not fall on deaf ears:41. Do your research.Like any other element of your career, it all starts with research. In order to present your manager with a compelling case in your favor, you need to know what the going rate is for someone with your experience and in your position.42. Outline a case for yourself. When going into any kind of negotiation session, you need to be equipped with the right amount of ammunition. Before you walk into your meeting, look back at your time with the company and highlight your accomplishments. Come up with a list of specific examples of ways you have been a valuable asset to the business. Find facts and figures that demonstrate what you have excelled, using numbers whenever possible. If you really want to knock their socks off, put your accomplishments into a formal presentation, albeit brief, that outlines each of your goals and how you have achieved them. This will demonstrate that you are professional, willing to go the extra mile, and have thought about your request thoroughly.43. Know what’s going on in your neighborhood. There are good times and bad times to ask for a raise at any company.Schedule ample time to present your case, and make sure your timing is right.Asking for a raise on the fly after just after walking into your manager’s office to chat will not benefit you or impress your boss.Make sure you have time to present your case, and that your manager has time to think about your presentation. Request a meeting with your supervisor, at least a half-hour long. Think about your timing when you schedule the meeting, too. If your department has a bevy of deadlines t0 meet at the end of each month, don’t schedule your meeting on the 29th.Pick a time when your manager will be sure to be in a good mood and not overly stressed.44. Avoid threats or demands. The last thing you want to do is to put your supervisor on the defensive.Be professional and, if your job is worth keeping, willing to listen to the other side. Keep the meeting positive and your outcome will be more positive.45. Remember that not all perks are monetary.Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you are not valued if you do not get exactly what you had expected.[A] If you approach your manager for a raise in a time of downsizing and cost-cutting, you willnot only be denied, but will also show that you are not in tune with the company’s needs.Make sure you understand your company’s overall financial situation.[B] For example, if you developed a marketing plan that helped increase sales, make sure youhave those sales figures on hand, as well as your role in the plan and its execution. Be sure to tie your own success into the overall success of the company.[C] If your company is strapped financially but you and your manager still come to the conclusionthat it is time for you to be rewarded for your performance, you might be able to negotiate for stock options, more vacation time or other non-monetary benefits.[D] When you come up with your desired raise in your base salary, go over 2%. If you want 8%then ask for 10%.[E] You can find out what others in your industry, and in comparable positions are raking in bylooking at online resources, through the Bureau of Labor Statistics, or in books like “The American Almanac of Jobs and Salaries” by John W. Wright (Quill).[F] Going into a meeting with the “if I don’t get it, I’m leaving”attitude will only tell yourcompany you are uncompromising and only out for number one.Text 2Directions: You are going to read a text about doubt followed by a list of example. Choose the best example from the list A-F for each numbered subheading (41-45). There is one extra heading which you do not need to use.Doubt is an emotion typical of self-aware organisms. In order to relieve doubt, human beings seek verification of their uncertainties, and as the questioning mind looks to find answers, we can deduce that without the discomfort of doubt no progress would be made.(41) Skepticism as a powerful wellspring for science and progressIf science is to forge through the headwaters of discovery,it requires a driving force that springs from the inquiring mind of man. Without doubt, we may still have been under the impression that the sun is in orbit around the earth, and not, as was found centuries ago, vice versa.(42) Doubt should lead one to seek clarificationDoubt alone will break no ground if action does not come one step behind. Doubt without immediate follow-up will leave one with nothing but consternation.(43) Doubt originates from basic understandingThose who remain entirely in the dark about what they doubt are unqualified to doubt. If one does not know the first thing about his subject, if he is only casually acquainted with what he questions, he will have no foundation from which to continue his quest and will have no grasp of the causes or effects of the subject matter therein. One should avoid assumption and supposition without a solid infrastructure from which to begin.(44) The right way to doubtHave the courage to doubt and the integrity to maintain your own opinion regardless of how influential or highly-esteemed the subject of your incredulity may be.(45) The proper attitude towards doubtWhen others express doubt about your theories or actions, do not be dismissive but rather introspective, and give some time over to assessing the validity of their doubt. Is their supporting evidence sound? Why is it that others doubt when you do not? Try to put yourself in their shoes and embrace varying points of view.Doubt, though at times distressing, can propel us to new heights. We should learn to listen to our doubt and manage it with conscious aplomb.[A] I am in recovery from a serious disease and can barely run 10,000 meters. I am unsure whetherI can complete my marathon or not.[B] In the recent Enron scandal, a humble accountant brought a multi-national corporation to itsknees when she turned up errors in doctored financial records that she refused to reason away.[C] Acclaimed British novelist Agatha Christie describes Poirot, a Belgium detective whotemerariously held everyone in suspicion, whose daring doubt and reasoning allowed him to clearly examine only solid evidence and finger the offender through the process of elimination.[D] Bill believed his wife was hard of hearing, and repeatedly called her name from behind:“Mary!”, each time moving closer to her. When finally he has her attention, he said, “Darling, I’ve called for you three times and received no reply.” To this his wife said, “I have answered you three times, and yet each time you did not listen. Who do you think is hard of hearing? ”[E] M, one of my classmates in college, is an avid opponent of the Theory of Relativity. Hisdeclaration that he had valuable contributions to make to the natural sciences was met with dubiety, being that he had not yet understood the relationship between time and space.[F] In the late 1890’s, Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen conducted experiment that focused on lightphenomena and other emissions generated by discharging electrical current in highly-evacuated glass tubes. The scientist was interested primarily in cathode rays and in assessing their range outside of charged tubes. Several other scientists of the period, Dr. Henry Louis Smith in particular, though all observed the cathode ray’s effect on a sealed negative, ignored important evidence through a series of inaccurate analysis. Roentgen, however, did nor and in 1901, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for discovering the X-ray.Text 3Directions: You are going to read a text about cheating, followed by a list of examples. Choose the best example from the list [A]~[F] for each numbered subheading(41~45). There is one extra example which you do not need to use. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.Just as the teacher hands out the spelling test, you see Megan pull out a small piece of paper with a lot of little scribbling on it. Megan tucks the note into her closed fist, but soon takes it out again. While she’s taking the test, you see her looking back and forth between the teacher and her paper. There’s no mistaking it—she’ s cheating.(41) What exactly is cheating?Cheating is when a person misleads, deceives, or acts dishonestly on purpose. For kids, cheating may happen at school, at home.(42) How do people cheat? It’s tempting to cheat because it makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it doesn’t solve the problem of not knowing the material and it won’t help on the next test—unless the person cheats again.Sometimes it may seem like cheaters have it all figured out. They can watch TV instead of studying for the test, But other people lose respect for cheaters and think less of them. The cheaters themselves may feel bad because they know they are not really earning that good grade. And, if they get caught cheating.they will be in trouble at school, and maybe at home, too. (43) Why kids cheat? Some kids cheat because they’re busy or lazy and they want to get good grades without spending the time studying. Other kids might feel like they can’t pass the test without cheating. Even when there seems to be a “good reason” for cheating, cheating isn’t a good idea.A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teacher and his or her parents so they can find some solutions together. Talking about these problems and working them out will feel better than cheating.(44) Truth and consequences. Many kids feel tempted to cheat once in a while. Most resist and do the work instead. Some kids cheat once and feel so bad that they never do it again. Others get caught and decide it isn’t worth it. Unfortunately, some kids start cheating and feel like they can’t stop.Kids who cheat may feel worried about getting caught. Whether they are caught or not, these kids may feel guilty, or embarrassed, or ashamed—or all three. Even if the cheater feels fine or doesn’t get caught, that doesn’t mean it’s OK. If you see someone cheating, or if someone asks to copy your work, you can tell a teacher or another grown-up.(45) Making a comeback. There are plenty of reasons why a kid shouldn’t cheat, but some kids have already cheated. If that’s you, it’s never too late to stop cheating. Cheating can become a habit. It might help to talk the problem over with a parent, teacher, or counselor. Choosing to play fair and be honest again can help a kid feel relieved and proud.[A] Cheaters cheat themselves in a way because they don’t make an honest attempt to learn asmuch as they can. For instance, if you cheat your way through spelling tests, you won’t learn how to spell. That can catch—I mean catch—up with you when you get older! And adults who cheat—at work, sports, or in their relationships—get into serious trouble, far more serious thana bad grade on a spelling test.[B] At school, in addition to cheating on a test, a kid might cheat by stealing someone else’s ideafor a sci ence project or by copying a book report off the Internet and turning it in as if it’s his or her original work. Copying someone else’s words or work and saying they’re yours is a type of cheating called plagiarizing (say: play-jeh-rise-ing) .[C] If you were sick or upset about something the night before and couldn’t study, it would bebetter to talk with the teacher about this. And if you don’t have enough time to study for a test because of swim practice, you need to talk with your parents about how to balance swimmingand school.[D] Cheating can happen in a lot of different ways. Megan is doing it by sneaking answers to a test, but it’s also cheating to break the rules of a game or contest or to pretend something is yours when it isn’t. When people cheat, it's not fair to other people, like the kids who studied for the test or who were the true winners of a game or contest.[E] Karen McCalley, an English teacher in New Jersey says, “It is always disappointing whenstudents cheat because it makes me think the student doesn’t believe in himself. I expect students to do their very best and am sad when they don’t put their best foot forward.”[F] There’s an old saying that cheaters never win and winners never cheat. This may soundconfusing because sometimes it seems like cheaters do win—at least for the moment. But kids who don’t cheat are true winners because, when they win, they do it fair and square.Text 4Directions: You are going to read a text about some tips on how to get along with brothers and sisters, followed by a list of examples. Choose the best example choice from the list[A]~E F]for each numbered subheading(41~45). There is one example choice which you do not need to use. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.In a house with more than one kid, there are bound to be some problems. Brothers and sisters borrow stuff, and don’t always return it in top condition. Younger kids sometimes feel like the older kids get to do whatever they want. Older brothers and sisters think that the baby of the family gets more attention. These are typical problems found throughout the ages, everywhere in the world. When brothers and sisters don’t get along, it’s called sibling rivalry. A sibling is a brother or sister and rivalry means competition. It’s normal, but too much competition can make for an unhappy home life. Let’s talk about getting along with brothers and sisters. And following these tips, you and your brothers will probably always have a good time at home.(41) What is sibling rivalry?A little competition isn’t a bad thing. Sometimes it can keep you working hard—like when you and your brother spend time shooting hoops. If he’s good at it, it may make you want to improve, too.(42) The green-eyed monster.Have you ever heard of the green-eyed monster called jealousy? Sometimes brothers and sisters are jealous of one another. For instance, if your sister always does well at school, it may be frustrating for you, especially if your grades are lower. All kids want attention from their parents, but sometimes you need to take turns. If you’re feeling ignored or like your sibling is always in the spotlight, talk to your mom or dad. This can really make a difference. according to one family therapist who said, “Sometimes just talking about the problem is the biggest step in solving it. Your parent may not realize how you feel and once he or she knows, positive changes can be made to make you feel cared in the family life again”If a parent knows you’re feeling left out, together you can figure out ways to help you feel better again.(43) Don’t lose your coolSometimes when you’re frustrated, it’s easy to lose your temper. Try to follow these tips toavoid getting into a fight with your brother or sister:●Remind yourself that you have special talents.●Try to congratulate your siblings on their achievements and share their happiness. If you dothis for them, they’ll be more likely to do it for you.(44) How to stop fightingIf the situation gets out of control and you and your brother or sister start fighting a lot, you may need to talk to someone.(45) Future friendsIt may be hard to believe now, but your brother or sister may turn out to be your best friend someday. As you grow up, your friends might change, but your family is your family and may be your best friends forever.[A] Mean words can lead to hitting and physical fighting. If this is going on with you and yoursibling, talk to a parent or another trusted adult.[B] Although you’re probably proud of your sibling or siblings, it’s normal to be a little jealous, too. It may make you feel better to focus more on doing your own personal best, rather than comparing your self to a brother or sister.[C] You and your sibling might be able to make things better by talking to seeing a professional, like a psychologist, psychiatrist, therapist, or social worker, who understands your rivalry problems.[D] But some sibling rivalry involves arguing, like when you think your brother is hogging theball. People who love each other might argue sometimes, but too much fighting is unpleasant for everyone.[E] Take a deep breath and think a bit. Try to figure out if you are angry with the person or justfrustrated with the situation.[F] Many brothers and sisters fight and compete with each other while growing up but becomevery close when they get older.Text 5Directions: You are going to read a text about the tips for cover letter writing, followed by a list of examples. Choose the best example from the list [A]~[F] for each numbered subheading(41~45). There is one extra example which you do not need to use.Cover letters are simply a letter of introduction. In these letters you are explaining who you are and why you are writing to the resume reader. It is a matter of courtesy that you introduce yourself when you are requesting something of them, in this case, an interview.(41)What instances require a cover letter? Our rule is-if you are not shaking hands with the hiring decision maker and introducing yourself, then you need a cover letter to introduce you. If you are shaking hands with the hiring manager, you are introducing yourself verbally and requesting an interview. In this case, hand them your resume without a cover letter. What makes a good cover letter? When writing your cover letter, keep in mind that the reviewer is only interested in one thing: the facts. Do not think of your cover letter as an autobiography; it should be brief and to the point.(42)Cover letters should be brief and simple.Hiring managers only glance at cover letters. They have many resumes to read out of which they will select a few candidates for interviews. I recommend letters be 3~4 paragraphs.(43)Address it to the person who can hire you.Resumes sent to the personnel department have a tougher time of it. If you can find out(through networking and researching)exactly who is making the hiring decision, address the letter to that person. Be sure the name is spelled correctly and the title is correct.(44)Try to avoid negatives. When writing the cover letter, avoid negatives.Try to avoid a salary history in the cover letter.Even if the position specifically asks for your salary history, providing this information will more likely cost you a job than not. If the job ad specifically says that resumes without a salary history will not be considered, give a historical salary range, and state that your salary requirements are flexible based on the opportunity the position will provide.(45)Spend time thinking about the layout of your letter. You should make sure that it’s easy on the eyes. It should be easy to scan the letter, and have a logical progression.Remember, your cover letter is not a summary of your resume; instead, it’s an introduction of yourself, and an argument for why you are the best candidate for their company and the specific position. Above all, avoid the generic cover letter that you get from books. Do not follow the advice of poorly written resume and cover letter books and websites that advise on using platitudes and clichés in your cover letter. Resume reviewers do this for a living. The point here is to be different and stand out. The goal is to demonstrate your written communication skills by writing a good cover letter—Cutting and pasting a phrase from a cover letter/resume book is not impressive.[A] A cover letter is not the place to explain why you left or are leaving an employer, why thereare gaps in your employment dates, etc. These can be better delivered in person during the interview so that your personality can counter them.[B] Keep in mind, the reviewer of your cover letter and resume has hundreds(if not thousands)ofcover 1etters and resumes to look at, so make it easy for him/her to find the information you want to highlight.[C] On the other hand, if you are sending a resume by mail, if you give your resume to a friend tohand in, or if you leave your resume with the hiring manager’s secretary then you are not shaking the hiring manager’s hand and you need to have a cover letter enclosed with your resume.[D] Your cover letter should be sent to a specific person—avoid the “Dear Sir or Madam”. Formletters insult the reviewer’s intelligence and indicate that you, the writer, are broadcasting his/her resume to every employer in the area. Or you have not made an effort to learn more about the company.[E] Don’t go overboard-just make it clear that you didn’t pick this company out of the phone book. You know who they are, what they do, and you have chosen them![F] Many people provide lengthy autobiographies in the cover letter. They regurgitate their resumeand then some. This is a waste of the writer’s and reader’s time.Text 6Directions: You are going to read a text about great books, followed by a list of examples. Choose the best example from the list[A],[F] for each numbered subheading(41~45). There is one extra example which you do not need to use. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (10 points)There is no end to the making of books. Nor does there seem to be any end to the making of lists of “great books.” There have always been more books than anyone could read. And as they have multiplied through the centuries, more and more blue-ribbon lists have had to be made. What are the signs by which we may recognize a great book? The following that I will mention may not be all there are, but they are the ones I’ve found most useful in explaining my choices over the years.(41)Great books are probably the most widely read. They are not best sellers for a year or two. They are enduring best sellers.(42)A great book need not even be a best seller in its own day.It may take time for it to accumulate its ultimate audience.(43)Great books are popular, not pedantic. They are not written by specialists about specialties for specialists.Great books are always contemporary. In contrast, the books we call “contemporary”, because they are currently popular, last only for a year or two, or ten at the most. You probably cannot recall the names of many earlier best sellers, and you probably would not be interested in reading them. But the great books are never outmoded by the movement of thought or the shifting winds of doctrine and opinion.People regard the “classics”as the great has-beens. the great books of other times. “Our times are different,” they say. On the contrary, the great books are not dusty remains for scholars to investigate, they are, rather, the most potent civilizing forces in the world today.(44)The fundamental human problems remain the same in all ages. The fundamental human problems remain the same in all ages. Great books will not 1et you down if you try to read them well. They have more ideas per page than most books have in their entirety. That is why you can read a great book over and over again and never exhaust its contents.(45)There can be a variety of interpretations. They can be read at many different levels of understanding. as well as with a great diversity of interpretations. It is almost unnecessary to add that the great books are the most influential books. In the tradition of learning, they have been most discussed by readers who have also been writers. These are the books about which there are many other books—countless and, for the most part, forgotten.Great books deal with the persistently unsolved problems of human life. There are genuine mysteries in the world that mark the limits of human knowing and thinking. Inquiry not only begins with wonder, but usually ends with it also. Great minds acknowledge mysteries honestly. Wisdom is fortified not destroyed, by understanding its limitations. It is our privilege, as readers, to belong to the larger brotherhood of man which recognizes no national boundaries. I do not know how to escape from the strait-jacket of political nationalism. I do know how we become friends of the human spirit in all its manifestations, regardless of time and place. It is by reading the great books.[A]The astronomer Kepler, whose work on the planetary motions is now a classic, is reported tohave said of his book that “It may wait a century for a reader. as God has waited 6 000 years for an observer.”[B]Anyone who reads the speeches of Demosthenes and the letters of Cicero, or the essays of Bacon and Montaigne, will find how constant is the preoccupation of men with happiness and justice, with virtue and truth and even with stability and change itself. We may accelerate the motions of life, but we can not seem to change the routes that are available to its goals.[C]Whether they be philosophy or science, or history or poetry, they treat of human, not academic problems. They are written for men, not professors. To read a textbook for advanced students, you have to read an elementary textbook first. But the great books can be considered elementary in the sense that they treat the elements of any subject matter. They are not related to one another as a series of textbooks, graded in difficulty or in the technicality of the problems with which they deal.[D]Whether you ultimately agree or disagree with what they say, these are the primary teachers of mankind; they have made the basic contributions to human thought.[E]Obvious examples are Gulliver's Travels,Robinson Crusoe and the Odyssey. Children can read them with enjoyment, but fail to find therein all the beauty and significance which delight an adult mind.[F]It would be reasonable to estimate that Homer’s Iliad has been read by at least 25 000 000 people in the last 3 000 years.Text 7Directions:You are going to read a text about oil price, followed by a list of examples. Choose the best example from the list[A],[F] for each numbered subheading(41-45). There is one extra example which you do not need to use. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.“The oil price is very high, it’s crazy.” The sentiment seems reasonable enough. After all, the price of a barrel of oil shot above $44, a record in nominal terms, on the New York Mercantile Exchange this week. But why does the oil price go that high? Here are some reasons.(41)The observation that the market was “crazy”:That is because those words were spoken on August 3rd by Purnomo Yusgiantoro, Indonesia’s oil minister and the president of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries(OPEC).(42)High market needs:When there is need, there is market.(43)Stretched supply:That points to higher prices, but not necessarily a shock. For a start, even $50 a barrel would, in inflation-adjusted terms, still be below historic peaks. Also, the American market may be loosening a little. Official data released on August 4th showed a sharp rise in gasoline inventories last week, of 2.4 million barrels to 210 million barrels, the highest stock in a year and a half. Experts had expected inventories to fall by 500,000 barrels. Futures prices receded on the news.。

The first and last paragraphs of the text are not numbered. There is one extra heading which you do not need to use. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (10 points)[A] Analyzing your own taste[B] Being cautious when experimenting[C] Finding a model to follow[D] Getting the final look absolutely right[E] Learning to be realistic[F] Making regular conscious choicesWhen we meet people for the first time, we often make decisions about them based entirely on how they look. And, of course it’s something that works both ways, for we too are being judged on our appearance. When we look good, we feel good, which in turn leads to a more confident and self-assured manner. People then pick up on this confidence and respond positively towards us. Undoubtedly, it’s what’s inside that’s important, but so metimes we can send out the wrong signals simply by wearing inappropriate clothing or not spending enough time thinking about how others see us.41___________For example, people often make the mistake of trying to look like someone else they’ve seen in a magazine, but this is usually a disaster as we all have our own characteristics. Stand in front of a full-length mirror and be honest with yourself about what you see. There is no need to dwell on your faults—we all have good points and bad points—but think instead about the best way to emphasize the good ones.42___________When selecting your clothes each day, think about who you’re likely to meet, where you’re going to be spending most of your time and what tasks you are likely to perform. Clearly, some outfits will be more appropriate to different sorts of activity and this will dictate your choice to an extent. However, there’s no need to abandon your individual taste completely. After all, if you dress to please somebody else’s idea of what loo ks good, you may end up feeling uncomfortable and not quite yourself.43___________But to know your own mind, you have to get to know yourself. Is there a common theme?44___________Some colors bring your natural colouring to life and others can give us a washed-out appearance. Try out new colours by all means, but remember that dressing in bright colours when you really like subtle neutral tones, or vice versa, will make you feel self-conscious and uncomfortable. You know deep down where your own taste boundaries lie. And although it’s good to challenge those sometimes with new combinations or shades, take care not to go too far all at once.45___________So, you’ve chosen an outfit that matches your style, your personality, your shape and your colouring. In all cases, if it doesn’t fit perfectly, don’t buy it, because the finer details are just as important as the overall style.Reappraising your image isn’t selfish because everyone who comes into contact with you will benefit. So, whatever stage you are at in your life, whatever role you play, isn’t it time you made the most of yourself?

[C] Emerging Independence and Search for Identity开始出现的独立和寻求认同的倾向[D] Emotional Turbulence情感波动[E] Interest in the Opposite Sex对异性的兴趣[F] Peer Pressure and Conformity同辈人的压力和从众心理概括这些选项的内容可以推测出文章的主要话题是青春期的变化及如何为这些变化做准备,考试大。
