Make Every Day Count 让每天都充满意义“I was once told by someone that I should end each day by crossing it off(v.除去) my calendar and saying out loud, “There goes another day of my life, never to return again.” Try this for yourself, and notice how much it sharpen s your focus. When you end a day w ith the feeling that you wou ld have lived it the same if you had the chance to repeat it, you gain a sense of gratitude that helps you focus on what’s really important to you. When you end the day with a feeling of re gret or loss, you gain the awareness to try a different approach the next day”If we’re not careful, we don’t notice that the days are passing us by. We take the paths of least resistance, stick ing(v.粘住) within our comfort zone. We watch TV all evening rather than learn skills that will help us advance. We put up with(v. 无根据的) criticism, we passively submit to(v.屈服于) requests rather than assert our needs. We allow a lack of confidence to pass up(v.拒绝) on an oppor tunity.Looking back over the past year, or even t he past week, by doing things and stretching myself (v. 拓展自我,做平时不做的事) that I feel I h ave made the most of(v. Or as the quote says, I would live it the same way if allowed to repeat it. But, to use another cliché(n.老生常谈), life is not a rehearsal - there is no replay button. Moreover there is no erase and record again facility!“有人曾告诉过我,当一天过去的时候,我应该从日历中把它划去然后大声的说,‘我的生命又逝去了一天,而且不会再回来了。

Top Ten Ways to Be Happy at Work

Top Ten Ways to Be Happy at WorkIt doesn’t ma tter if you have the most mundane, stressful, or tedious job … there is always a way to find happiness in the workplace. Much of it is on your own shoulders. But, to be productive and create a lasting niche for yourself with a company, you must have some sort of happiness. Here are ten ways to be happy at work.#1) HEALTHY BODYWake up one hour early, and prepare your body for work. Hours are spent with hygiene and wardrobe, but the actually physical body is often forgotten in the morning routine. Just 30 minutes of aerobic exercise will get blood flowing, create energy, boost metabolism, and loosen up the body. This is especially important if you have a desk job, or job where you spend a lot of time cooped up in a car.#2) HEALTHY MINDTake the other 30 minutes (from the early wake up above) to get the mind healthy. Yoga, meditation, prayer, reflection, etc.. what ever works best to clear your mind of personal stressors.#3) EAT A BALANCED DIETEat energy rich-low fat foods. Fat makes you tired and sluggish; which makes you ill and unhappy. Do not skip breakfast and lunch. It doesn’t matter how busy the day gets, take time to get away from wor k and eat. This pr ovides you with just enough time to replenish energy levels and refocus.#4) ADD A PERSONAL E LEMENTMost employees will have some place that they can put a personal picture, pot plant, knickknack, etc.. Not only will this make you f eel more at ease in the work environment, but it will help you to remember the good things in life. If you do not have an area to call your own, dedicate a special piece of jewelry, that can serve as a happy reminder.#5) DON’T SWEAT THE UNIMPORTANT STU FFOf course, the know it all… tail wagging… suck u p… gal next to you is aggravating. However, unless you have the authority to fire her, you are stuck with her. Why let anyone else effect your sanity. Just nod ,and block her diarrhea of the mouth out. Likewise, if a customer is throwing a fit because of a policy that you donot have control over, do not take their insults personally. You will be a much happier person if you realize that you can not sweat the stuff that you can’t change.#6) DO NOT EXPECT PERSONAL RECOGNITIONMost bosses and customers are not going to specifically recognize you for your accomplishments. However, they are going to jump on the sl ightest err. My husband still can not comprehend this. He is always complaining about how unappreciated he is at work. Well, your appreciation, recognition, pat on the back, etc.. is your pay check. If you are getting a pay check, then you can assume you are doing something right. When you expect to be to told “thank you for putting in those extra 20 hours of work this week,” you are setting yours elf up for disappointment. Continue to work hard, and your payoff will be promotions, raises, and personal advancement; which is of much greater value than a pat on the back.#7) BE POSITIVEOkay, I know that it is trite and is often a hard feat. Howe ver, the “can do attitude” leads to suc cess. In addition to a positive attitude, you should surround yourself with positiv e people. Also, avoid gossip and complaining.#8) BE KNOWLEDGEABLEWhat ever your job is, you should make it a priority to know as much as you can about the job, field, company, industry, etc.. This should include the legalities related to the ethics of your profession or license. Knowing what you should and shouldn’t do will give you a greater peace of mind in performing job dutie s. A person constantly on edge is never happy.#9) ORGANIZATIONKeep your area clean and organized. This will cut a tremendous amount of stress out of your life. Thereby, making you a happier person.#10) TAKE YOUR BREAKSEvery employee is entitled (by law) to two- 15 min breaks in an 8 hr shift. It is easy to grow weary and aggravated, if you do not take the time to “reset.”.

7. Cut The FatCan “bad” fats make you dumb? When researchers a t the University of Toronto put rats on a 40-percent-fat diet, the rats lost ground in several areas of mental function, including memory, spatial awareness and rule learning. The problems became worse with a diet high in saturated fats, the kind that’s ab undant in meat and dairy products. While you may never be called upon to navigate a little maze in search of a cheddar cube, these results could hold true for you as well, for two reasons: Fat can reduce the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your brain, and it may also slow down the metabolism of glucose, the form of sugar the brain utilizes as food. You can still get up to 30 percent of your daily calories in the form of fat, but most of it should come from the aforementioned fish, olive oil, nuts and seeds. Whatever you do, stay away from trans fats, the hardened oils that are abundant in crackers and snack foods.7.

Aspects of English LifeQueuing

Aspects of English Life:QueuingAspects of English Life:QueuingThe English expect each other to observe the rules of queuing, feel highly offended when these rules are violaed, but lack the confidence or social skills to express their annoyance in a strightforward manner. In other countries, this is not a problem:in America, where a queue-jumper has committed a misdemeanour rather than a cardinal sin,the response is loud and prescriptive:the offender is simply told'Hey,you, get back in line!' or words to that effect. On the continent, the reaction tends to be loud and argumentative; in some other parts of the world,queue-jumpers may simply be unceremonioul y pushed and shoved back into line--but the end result is much the same.Parodoxically,it is only in England, where queue-jumping is regarded as deeply immoral, that the queue-jumper is likely to get away with the offence. The English huff and puff and scowl and mutter and seethe with rightous indignation, but only rarely do they actually speak up and tell the jumper to go to the back of the queue.Queuing is almost a national pastime for the English, who automatically arrange themselves into orderly lines at bus stops, shop counters,ice-creamvans,entrances,exits,and lifes. In 1946,the Hungarian humorist George Mikes desccribed queuing as English'national passion.''On the continent,'he said,'if people waiting at a bus stop they loiter around in a seemingly vague fashion. When the bus arrives they make a dash for it...An English man, even if he is alone, forms orderly queue of one.'In a update over thirty years later in 1977 he comfirmed that this was still the case. After nearly another thirty years nothing mu ch seems to have changed. The authoress of the book said,'I do it myself. When waiting alone for a bus or at a taxi stop,I do not just lounge about anywhere roughly within striking distance of the stop,as people do in other countries--I stand directly under the sign facing in the correct direction, exactly as though I were at the head of the queue.I form an orderly queue of one.'In many cases,queue-jumping is effectively 'nipped in the bud' by non-verbal signals alone. When someone is considering jumping a queue, the queuers will start glancing at him sideways, through narrowed, suspicious eyes. Then they shuffle a bit closer to the person in front of them, just in case the jumper might try to insert himself in the gap. They adopt a more belligerent, territorial posture--putting a hand on a lip,'squaring up' to the potential threat,or ostentatiously turning a shoulder away from him.Frowns, glares, raised eyebrows and contemptuouslooks--accompanied by heavy sighs, pointed coughs, scornful snorts, turring andmuttering ('Will, really!''Bloody hell!''Huh,typical.''What the...')--are usually the worst that the person will be subjected to if he jumps a queue.Facing with all this the jumper w ill think better of it and retreat meekly to the back of the queue. The English have an acute sense of fairness, and what in other cultures would seen as entirely legitimate opportunistic behaviour--such as heading directly for the 'free' cashier when there are two people already waiting to be served in front of the cashier alongside, who have simply no been quick enough to move across--is here regarded as queue-jumping or tantamount to queue-jumping.Such behaviour is severely frowned upon.

12 Powerful Life Lessons

12 Powerful Life LessonsAs my wife and I were planning our last vacation, one of the first things we did was get out a map and plan our route. Whether it was online maps or old fashioned paper maps - they all helped guide us to our destination. As I was looking at the maps spread across our dining room table, I thought, “wouldn’t it be great if there was a map of life” that could guide you along your life’s journey?A personal motivation map giving you th ose life lessons that one typically learns way to o late in life. Does such a “map of life” exist? It was then that I stumbled upon a tattered copy of The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho in the bottom of my closet.Paulo Coelho in his wi ldly popular book (65 million copies sold in 67 languages) tells the story of a shepherd boy and his quest to live his dream. Along the way, the boy meets an alchemist who has the power to inspire personal transformation. This Alchemist gives the boy a number of life’s lessons - lessons that are as fresh and applicable today as they were hundreds of years ago. The lessons by themselves are interesting, but it’s only when they are applied, that the power of personal transformation can be unleashed. So what can Paulo teach us about life and pursing dreams in the face of obstaclesthat caused 65 million people to buy his book?1. It’s the simple things in life that are the most extraordinary.I believe this to be true and have experienced this with my own family. When I think of the times where we laughed the most or had the most fun - it was when we were doing the simplest things. Swimming in a pool, combing a beach for shells, p laying a board game, or sharing a delicious meal - all simple things making up the best times we’ve had as a family.Question: What were some of the happiest memories from your past? What were you doing?2. Support your children in pursuit of their dreams. In the beginning of the story the shepherd boy (named Santiago) tells his father he wants to travel and see the world. The father explains he wants his son to stay in the village and become a priest. But Santiago persists - being a priest is not his dream. What does his father do? He gives Santiago the small amount of money he had been saving for the boy and wished him well. How many of us had parents who have - in not-so-subtle-ways - influenced us totake careers that were not in-line with our dreams? Be honest now, did you pick your current career because you’re passionate about the work or were you trying to make your parents proud? How do you feel about your career now?As a parent, it’s difficult to accept when your child wants to take a path other than the one you had hoped and planned for them. But, it’s ok. Like my wife keeps telling me “give them roots and give them wings”. Give them a sol id foundation of love, but give them the freedom to follow their dreams.Question: What were some of your dreams as a child?3. There is nothing to hold you back, except yourself. There is only one question to ask yourself here: “What would you do if y ou were not afraid?” Think about it.4. There is only one way to learn, and that is through action.Trying to learn without doing is like trying to lose weight by watching someone else exercise. It’s just not going to work. We are all fundamentally hand s-on learners.Question: What would you like to learn? What next action step can you take?5. Trust your gut (or Learn to recognize omens, and follow them.)Many times our subconscious has already made a decision before we’ve caught up and made the same decision. Sometimes we don’t make the same decision and then ‘something does not feel right’ or there is a persistent naggingthat bothers us. Malcolm Gladwell wrote extensively about this phenomenon in his book titled Blink: The Power of Thinking without Thinking. Trust your gut - it may be more accurate than you think.6. Follow your dreams. There are many of us who dream our dreams without ever actually realizing any of them. For whatever reason we get locked in a “dream state” and never take action. We analyze too much and our dreams turn into giant mountains in our imagination that seem impossible to climb. As a result, we never learned that foreign language we’ve always wanted to learn, or traveled, or started that business, or written that book. Just think of the man y bestsellers that would have been, but were never written. The time is now, to awake from dreamland, to live the life we want and to achievethe extraordinary potential within us all.Question: What are some dreams you’d like to rea lize now? Write them down on a piece of paper and make sure the success of their attainment is measurable.7. Know what you want.Set goals and make a plan to ac hieve them. It’s like the saying, “a goal that is never written down is nothing but a New Ye ar’s resolution” - and we all know what happens to New Year’s resolutions.8. Make a decision and dive in with massive action. The river of life will take you to places that you have never imagined. Once yo u make a decision, take action. You’ll be surpr ised to find where it will lead.9. Move on - always look forward. It’s ok to look back once and a while, but don’t live in the past. You can visit “pity city” for a short time, but after a while you have to leave it all behind and walk on.10. You will encounter obstacles and take detours while realizing your dreams. As you strive to achieve your dreams, you can count on there being some setbacks and disappointments. Don’t get discouraged, the road to your dreams may not be an easy one. Think of these challenges as tests of persistence and courage that life throws at you during your quest. They were necessary and were meant to help you grow as a person.Learn to adjust the sails of your life to unpredictable winds, while keeping your focus clear on your destination.11. Don’t fear the unknown. As long as you’re resourceful and have a few skills, you’ll be able to provide for yourself (and your family). Have confidence in yourselfat all times.12. Learn to understand the universal language - the language without words. There is so much more said from a person than just words alone. You can read the expression on someone’s face, sense their body language, or hear the tone in their voice - these thingsare all part of the unspoken language. The more conscious we become at noticing them, the better we become at interpreting them..

Be Still With God All day long I had been very busy; picking up trash, cleaning bathrooms and scrubbing floors. My grown children were coming home for the weekend. I went grocery shopping and prepared for a barbecue supper, complete with ribs and chicken.I wanted everything to be perfect.Suddenly, it dawned on me that I was dog-tired. I simply couldn't work as long as I could when I was younger. "I've got to rest for a minute," I told my husband, Roy, as I collapsed into my favorite rocking chair. Music was playing, my dog and cat were chasing each other and the telephone rang.A scripture from Psalm 46 popped into my mind. "Be still, and know that I am God."I realized that I hadn't spent much time in prayer that day. Was I too busy to even utter a simple word of thanks to God? Suddenly, the thought of my beautiful patio came to mind. I can be quiet out there, I thought. I longed for a few minutes alone with God.Roy and I had invested a great deal of time and work in the patio that spring. The flowers and hanging baskets were breathtaking. It was definitely a heav enly place of rest and tranquility. If I can't be still with God in that environment, I can't be still with Him anywhere, I thought. While Roy was talking on the telephone, I slipped out the backdoor and sat down on my favorite patio chair.I closed my eyes and began to pra y, counting my many blessings.A bird flew by me, chirping and singing. It interrupted my thoughts. It landed on the bird feeder and began eating dinner as I watched. After a few minutes it flew away, singing another song.I closed my eyes again. A gust of wind blew, which caused my wind chimes to dance. They made a joyful sound, but again I lost my concentration on God. I squirmed and wiggled in my chair. I looked up toward the blue sky and saw the clouds moving slowly toward the horizon. The wind died down. M y wind chimes finally became quiet.Again, I bowed in pray er. "Honk, honk," I heard. I almost jumped out of my skin.A neighbor was driving down the street. He waved at me and smiled. I wave d back, happy that he cared. I quickly tried once again to settle down, repeating the familiar verse in my mind. Be still and know that I am God."I'm trying God. I really am," I whispered. "But you've got to help me here."The backdoor opened. My husband walked outside. "I love you," he said. "I was wondering where you were." I c huckled, as he came over and kissed me, then turned around and went back inside."Where's the quiet time?" I asked God. My heart fluttered. There was no pain, only a beat that interrup ted me yet again. This is impo ssible, I thought. There's no time to be still and to know that God is with m e. There's too much going on in the world and entirely too much activity all around me.Then it suddenly dawned on me. God was speaking to me the entire time I was attempting to be still. I remembered the music playing as I'd begun my quiet time. He sent a sparrow to lighten my life with song. He sent a gentle breeze. He sent a neighbor to let me know that I had a friend. He sent my sweetheart to offer sincere sentiments of love. He caused my heart to flutter to remind me of life. While I was trying to count my blessings, God was busy multiplying them.I laughed to realize that the "interruptions" of my quiet time with God were special blessings He'd sent to show me He was with me the entire time..。

A Full-time School Called Life

A Full-time School Called LifeYou are enrolled in a full-time school called “life”. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or hate them, but you have designed them as part of your curriculum. Why are you here? What is your purpose? Humans have sought to discover the meaning of life for a very long time. What we and our ancestors have to overlook, however, is that there is no one answer. The meaning of life is different for every individual. Each person has his or her own purpose and distin ct path, unique and separate from anyone else’s. As you are travel your life path, you will be presented with numerous lessons that you will need to learn in order to fulfill that purpose. The lessons you are presented with are specific to you; learning these lessons is the key to discovering and fulfilling th e meaning and relevance of your own life.As your are travel through your lifetime, you may encounter chal lenging lessons that others don’t have to face, while others spend years struggling with challenges t hat you don’t need to deal with. You may never know why you are blessed with a wonderful marriage, while your friends suffer through bitter arguments and painful divorces, just as you cannot be sure why you struggle financially while your peers enjoy abundance. The only thing you can count on for certain is that you will be presented with all the lessons that you specifically need to learn; whether you choose to learn them or not is entirely up to you.The challenge here, therefore, is to align yourself with your own unique path by learning individual lessons. This is one of the most difficult challenges you will be faced with in your lifetime, as sometimes your path will be radically different from oth ers. But, remember, don’t compare your path to the people around you and focus on the disparity between their lessons and yours. You need to remember that yo u will only be faced with lessons that you are capable of learning and are specific to your own growth. Our sense of fairness is the expectation of equity, the assumption that all things are equal and that justice will always prevail. Life is not, in fact, fair, and you may indeed have a more difficult lift path than others around you, deserved or no t. Everyone’s circumstances are unique, and everyone needs to handle his or her own circumstances differently. If you want to toward serenity, you will be required to move out of the comparing yourself with others rather than appreciating your own special uniqueness. You miss out on learning your individual lessons by distracting yourself with feelings of bitterness and resentment.

My father’s words

Before they closed my father’s casket, I left him with a gift. After all he had given me, it was the least and best I could do. He passed away the day I got my 1,000th career hit, in the final game of the 2002 season, so at his side I left the ball from my milestone.Besides the surreal and horrifying last moment of seeing him lying in permanent stasis, it was also the first time I could remember giving him a special game ball without him slipping a $10 bill into my hands to congr atulate me. His illnes s kept him out of whatever stadium I was playing in during the latter years of my career, though that didn’t stop him from patting me on the back from afar with a phone call or by what I could best describe as a “spiritual moment,” one when I would feel him sitting on my shoulder advising me while referencing a page out of his psychiatric repertoire.I left baseball in 2005, with a Triple-A contract on the table from the San Diego Padres. I left not for physical reasons —I’d had a torn hamstring tendon in 2003, but it hadn’t affected my speed —but because it was my season for change. So I decided to walk away and once I did, like the vast majority of players, I was lost. It would be the first time since I learned to swing a bat that I would spend an entire summer without ever putting on a uniform. Even if you get a going-away party like the one the Phillies gave me on June 25th, 2005, when I threw out the first pitch of the Philadelphia-Boston game on a national TV, once the last partygoer walks out the door it’s no longer you against that fastball, it is you against yourself. So you swim around trying to figure out what young, retired baseball players do with their lives. For me, the moment was stark without the guiding wisdom of my father, who could communicate with me with just a nod of his head.Since my retirement, I have searched for the next passion that could fill the void that a life playing baseball creates when you are no longer putting on those spikes. It is a daunting journey, and many players never find that closure or that next love. But they keep looking, even if other parts of their lives are crumbling behind them. Maybe that was part of the problem: searching. I found myself agreeing when I heard John Locke, the main character on “Lost,” say, “I found it just like you find anything else, I stopped looking.”Of course my father could never be replaced, thou gh that didn’t stop me from trying to find ways to preserve his legacy, his worldview and his work. He was a practicing psychiatrist, but his passion was writing. He left behind a body of poetry that guides me now that I can’t ask him how he handled his so ns when we wanted to sleep in our parents’ bed, or what the best course of action would be in dealing with a difficult business partner, or a racist coach.I have always remembered those moments when my father would be spontaneously inspired to write a poem. He would just walk off and lock in, pen to paper. He could turn his already phenomenal vocabulary into music. When I found out that he started writing poetry at age 7, I was amazed. Outside of the original collection of poetry I have, he left behind two books he published on his own.I didn’t stay lost forever. I found something that I wasn’t looking for: a voice through writing. Only later did I understand that this would be a bridge to understanding my father in another way. A way that led me to connect to a pa ssion I didn’t realize we both shared.Writing introduced me to people who were otherwise strangers and made them guests at my table. Words can appear to be part of a one-way mirror, but they are in fact surprisingly reciprocal —a dynamic I’m reminded of when I call upon my father through his poetry. In this way, my father stays with me. I can preserve his inspiring lega cy more powerfully through writing than through the hummingbird pendant I wear around my neck to honor his homeland of Trinidad, or a picture or heirloom. After my first column, I went as a guest to a friend’s church in Chicago. In the foyer, a woman who also knew our host was waiting. She asked me whether I had written that opinion piece on fear, steroids and baseball. I to ld her I had. She proceeded to tell me that she taught journalism at Northwestern and that she thought it was the quintessential opinion piece. I had already known that for me writing was passion and even therapy, but now I also thought that maybe I’d foun d my next profession.Thankfully, I always knew my f ather was proud of me — before the major league debut, before the Ivy-league degree that was unfathomable to a generation of people who had only recently earned the right to vote. But despite living the dream of so many Americans and reaching it s highest level, I have no doubt that he would be even prouder of what I am doing with my words. Words that I can leave for my son to read...one day..

Two extremes in life 生活中的两极It has been so bitterly cold here in Pennsylvania.I can’t remember a winter being as cold as this, but I’m sure there were colder days.Even though the daylight hours are growing longer minute by mi nute, it’s easy to find an excuse not to go out unless you absolutely must, but then again I often have to push myself to accomplish things.People I speak to have been in all kinds of nasty moods. They say they’re “under the weather,” not feeling good about this time of year.As I s tood outside with my two dogs yesterday, it was so cold that my nose and face felt crisp and my cars were stinging.Of course, that does n’t matter to Ricky and Lucy. They have a routine they must go through to find just the fight spot no matter how cold or hot it is.So I wait. But this time it was different. As cold as it was, I suddenly was invigorated thinking about how wonderful this extreme cold really was. Then the sun broke through the clouds and memories of summer’s scorching hot days flashed through my mind. I could remember standing in the heat of the afternoon, swe at pouring down my brow and the hot, burning sun against my face. I reminded myself then and there that in the cold of the winter I would wish I had this heat.I was right. Two extremes in my life that most of the time I find uncomfortab le, I normally dread them and gripe about it all the way through. But today I was grateful for them. Without the extremes in my life, I would never appreciate the days when things were just right. Without the extre mes life would be boring. It’s being pushed to one of the extremes that makes us appreciate the middle more. Health challenges rem inds us that we need to pay more attention to how we live. Financial extremes rem inds us that when things are in excess it’s time to tuck away for when the times are lean.So bring on the cold so I appreciate the heat more.Make me sweat on a hot summer’s day so I wish I had a handful of snow to rub my face in.I’ve come to the conclusion that all too often I find a reason not to be happy with where I am at that moment.Whether it’s hot or cold, good health or bad, in the money or out of it, I always wanted it to be different. But no more. I want to start finding a reason to be happy right where I am. Even if it’s simply the fact that I’m alive.I’m tired of being “Under the Weather!”.。

Light in the Window

Light in the WindowBy Eileen GoltzIt was the first night of Chanukah and the night before Ellie's last final. As a freshman she was more than ready to go home for the first time since August. She'd packed every thing she needed to take home except the books she was cramming with and her menorah, the 8 branch candelabra that's lit every night of Chanukah. Ellie had been so tempted to pack the menorah earlier that night. However, just as she was getting ready to justify to herself why it was OK to "skip" the first night's lighting - (A) she'd have to wait for the candles to burn out before she cou ld leave for the library and (B) she had no clue as to where her candles were hiding - her conscience (and common sense) kicked in. The voice coming from that special place in her body where "mother guilt" resides said, "You have the menorah out, so light it already." Never one to ignore her mother's advice, Ellie dug up the candles, lit them, said the blessings, placed the menorah on her window sill and spent the rest of the evening in her room studying.Ellie's first winter break was uneventful, and when she returned to her dorm on the day before classes started she was surprised to find a small note taped to her door."Thank you," th e note said. It was signed "Susan." It was dated the day that Ellie had left after finals. Ellie was totally perplexed. She didn't know a Susan. Convinced that the letter had been delivered to her by mistake, Ellie put the note on her desk and forgot about it.About a half an hour before she was getting ready to head out for dinner, there was a knock at Ellie's door. There, standing in the hall was a woman Ellie didn't recognize. "I'm Susan," she said. "I wanted to thank you in person but you'd already left before I finished my finals.""Are you sure it's me you're looking for?" asked Ellie. Susan asked if she could come in and explain. It seemed that Susan had been facing the same dilemma that Ellie had been that first night of Chanukah. She really didn't want to light her menorah either. Not because she was packing, or was heading home, couldn't find the candles or because she busy studying but because her older sister Hannah had been killed by a drunk driver ten months earlier, and this was the first year that she'd have to light the menorah candles alone. The sisters had always taken turns lighting the first candle and this wasn't Susan's y ear. She just couldn't bring herself to take her sister's place. Susan said that whenever it was Hannah's turn to light the firstcandle, she'd always tease Susan that the candles she lit would burn longer and brighter than when Susan lit them. One year she even went so far as to get a timer out. It had always annoyed Susan that Hannah would say something so stupid but still, it was part of the family tradition. Susan said that it was just too painful to even think about Chanukah without Hannah and she had decided on skipping the entire holiday.Susan said that she had ju st finished studying and was closing her drapes when she happened to glance across the courtyard of the quad and saw the candles shi ning in Ellie's window. "I saw that menorah in y our window and I started to cry. It was if Hannah had taken her turn and put the menorah in your window for me to see." Susan said that when she stopped crying she said the blessings, turned off the lights in her room and watched the candles across the quad until they burned out.Susan told Ellie that it was as she was lying in bed that night thinking about how close she felt to Hannah when she saw the menorah, that it dawned on her thatHannah had been right. Hannah's last turn always would have candle s that would burn longer and brighter than any of Susan's because for Susan, Hannah's lights would never go out. They would always be there, in her heart for Susan to see when she needed to reconnect with Hannah. All Susan had to do was close her eyes and remember the candles in the window, the one's that Hannah had lit the last time it was her turn..

Speak slowly.

Such a simple thing, but it can have a big difference in how others perceive you.A person in authority, with authority, speaks slowly. It shows confidence. A person who feels that he isn't worth listening to will speak quickly, because he doesn't want to keep others waiting on something not worthy of listening to. Even if you don't feel the confidence of someone who speaks slowly, try doing it a few times. It will make you feel more confident. Of course, don't take it to an extreme, but just don't sound rushed either.

12. Stand tall.

I have horrible posture, so it will sound hypocritical for me to give this advice, but I know it works because I try it often. When I remind myself to stand tall and straight, I feel better about myself. I imagine that a rope is pulling the top of my head toward the sky, and the rest of my body straightens accordingly. As an aside, peo ple who stand tall and confident are more attractive. That's a good thing any day, in my book.

First, they assume tha t they know what is going to happen, so they stop paying attention and act on their assumption instead. Human beings are lousy fortune-tellers. Most of what they assume is wro ng. That makes the action wrong too. The second aspect of this habit is playing the mind-reader and assuming you know why people do what they do or what they're thinking. Wrong again, big time. People occasionally tell you,"Do that in your free time,"but in fact there's no such thing as"free"time. Even when you're lying by the swimming pool, that's leisure time --but it isn't free time. The most successful peo ple are those who've mastered the time-saving tactics described here.Stay FocusedAll top performers establish priorities. Helen Gurley Brown,editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan, always keeps an issue of the magazine on her desk. Whenever she's tempted to fritter away time, doing something that doesn't contribute to the magazine's success, she glances at that issue, and it gets her ba ck on track. One way to order your priorities is to create a"to do"list. Every evening, jot down the top20 tasks to be done the next day,and review the list several times throughout the day. The best way to accomplish what's on the list is to give each task a specific time slot.Pattern of SuccessMost people who want to get ahead spend useful time writing personal notes of gratitude, sympathy and congratulations. But when it comes to routine memos, letters, fact sheets and forms, they save a lot of time by relying on previously written material.Susan Taylor,editor-in-chief of Essence, has created some 40form letters for everything from article rejections to replies to requests for donations. Stored on her computer, the letters can be called up,copied and customized by changing a few key words. Taylor then often adds a handwritten greeting at the bottom as a personal touch.Telephone TipsFinancier J. B. Fuqua has made a fortune putting deals together over the telephone. His most important strategy is to make notes before he places a call.To avoid playing telephone tag, return phone calls right away, because you're likely to catch the caller and your messages won't pile up.

A light drizzle was falling as my sister Jill and I ran out of the Methodist Church, eager to get home and play with the presents that Santa had left for us and our baby sister, Sharon. Across the street from the church was a Pan American gas station where the Greyhound bus stopped. It was closed for Christmas, but I noticed a family standing outside the locked door, huddled under the narrow overhang in an attempt to kee p dry. I wondered briefly why they were there but then forgot about them as I raced to keep up with Jill.Once we got home, there was barely time to enjoy our presents. We had to go off to our grandparents’ house for our annual Christmas dinner. As we drove down the highway through town, I noticed that the family was still there, standing outside the closed gas station. My father was driving very slowly down the highway. The closer we got to the turnoff for my grandparents’ house, the slower the car went. Suddenly, my fat her U-turned in the middle of the road and s aid, “I can’t stand it!”“What?” asked my mother.“It's those people back there at the Pan Am, standing in t he rain. They've got children. It's Christmas. I can’t stand it.”When my father pulled into the service station, I saw that there were five of them: the parents and three children — two girls and a small boy.My father rolled down his window. “Merry Christmas,” he said.“Howdy,” the man replied. He was very tall and had to stoop slightly to peer into the car.Jill, Sharon, and I stared at the children, and they stared back at us.“You waiting on the bus?” my father asked. The man said that they were. They were going to Birmingham, where he had a brother and prospects of a job.“Well, that bus isn’t going to come along for several hours, and you’re getting wet standing here. Winborn’s just a couple miles up the road. They’ve got a shed with a cover there, and some benches,” my father said. “Why don't y’all get in the car and I’ll run you up there.”The man thought about it for a moment, and then he beckoned to his family. They climbed into the car. They had no luggage, only the clothes they were wearin g.Once they settled in, my father looked back over his shoulder and asked the children if Santa had found them yet. Three glum faces mutely gave him his answer.“Well, I didn’t think so,” my father said, winking at my mother, “b ecause when I saw Santa this morning, he told me that he was having trouble finding all, and he asked me if he could leave your toys at my house. We'll just go get them before I take you to the bus stop.”All at once, the three children's faces lit up, and they began to bounce around in the back seat, laughing and chattering. When we got out of the car at our house, the three children ran through the front door and straight to the toys that were spread out under our Christmas tree. One of the girls spied Jill’s doll and immediately hugged it to her breast. I remember that the little boy grabbed Sharon’s ball. And the other girl picked up something of mine. All this happened a long time ago, but the memory of it remains clear. That was the Christmas when my sisters and I learned the joy of making others happy. My mother noticed that the middle child was wearing a short-sleeved dress, so she gave the girl Jill’s o nly sweater to wear.My father invited them to join us at our grandparents’ for Christmas dinner, but the parents refused. Even when we all tried to talk them into coming, they were firm in their decision.Back in the car, on the way to Winborn, my father asked the man if he had money for bus fare. His brother had sent tickets, the man said.My father reached into his pocket and pulled out two dollars, which was all he had left until his next payday. He pressed the money into the man’s hand. The man tr ied to give it back, but my father insisted. “It’ll be late when you get to Birmingham, and these children will be hungry before then. Take it. I’ve been broke before, and I know what it’s like when you can’t feed your family.”We left them there at the bus stop in Winborn. As we drove away, I watched out the window as long as I could, looking back at the little gihugging her new doll..

Footprints on my heartFootprints on my heartI don't remember exactly when he came into my life.He was just always here.My grandfather was the most incredible person in the world. Some days Papa,as I called him,and I would go down to a little creek that flowed into river and go fishing. He taught me how to cast, reel and the scarie st of all, bait a hook.I remember that what it was like to catch my first fish, which Papa called a bluegill. For the first time in my life.I felt I had accomplished something useful.I was proud of myself.Other days we had sit on the front porch in the rocking chairs he had made and talk. But the thing I loved most was when we'd go out to the barn and he'd make things out of wood. He made me my first rocki ng horse when I was four.It wasn't anything fancy, but like me,Papa believed if it came from the heart, then that alone made it beautiful.Above all, anything that could bother a seven-year-old was something that I could always talk to him about.Papa would set me on his knee and listen to me cry.He made the world go away with one hug.Whenever I needed punishment,he always talked to me about what I had done.He would ask me why I made that mistake, while any other authority figure I knew went straight to physical punishment. He was the one person who had my respect, and who actually treated me with respect in return.Something else I admired was that he didn't treat me like a girl who only related to pink ribbons and Barbies. He treated me like a person. When I turn eight,a horrifying fact changed my life for ever. That fact was death. In September, they discovered that my Papa had cancer. It never sank in,even at his funeral the next February, that I'd never see his alive again. The organizing six months of his sickness were long and cruel, especially to my grandmother, who could not talk without crying.I didn't konw what death was.It was too much for an eight-year-old,so I blocked it out.Whatever death was,it wasn't real to me.Slowly,I learn I couldn't block it out.there were no more rodeos,no more fishing,no more horses and no one left to talk to.When I walked into my grandmother's house, there wss no longer the smell of the smoke mixed with coffee and sawdust, which was what Papa always smelled like.Everyone around me was sad,and I was learning what it was like to sad.It finally hit me that he was gone.Things started getting rough guys and friends.I knew if Papa had been alive,he could've helped.Instead I faced the world alone, and believe me,there are many pressures from sixth grade to high school, and I missed Papa.Night after night,I would go to bed cry.In seventh grade,I hung out with the wrong crowd. One morning,in the bathroom,a gril offered me a cigarette. All of a sudden, something clicked in mymind.Cigarettes are what had killed my Papa."No,"was my simple but strong reply.Regardless of their comments like "good girl" and "too-good".I stuck with my no smoking polichy.Since then,I have been offered cigarettes many times, and I have always replied with a simple "no."I wouldn't want to die of smoking.I wouldn't want my grandchilren feeling the way I did.I was too young to figure out what a great model I had around me when he was alive. But I re alize now.Papa is in every thought I have today.I still have all our special memories in my heart. He always made me believe in myself.Anything I do,he has influenced in some way.No one has ever or will ever have the patience he had with me.His death taught me many lessons, but the one so harshly instilled in me is that no one, even someone as great as him,is invincible.

what is real loveReal Love: The Love We’ve All Been Looking For — Unconditional LoveWe've heard songs about it, seen it in the movies, heard it talked about on Oprah by relationship expert s, and read about it in thousands of self help books. But, what is unconditional love? We all want to feel loved. We think about it, hope for it, fantasize about it, go to great lengths to achieve it, and feel that our lives are incomplete without it. The lack of unconditional love is the cause of most of our anger and confusion. It is no exaggeration to say that our emotional need for unconditional love is just as great as our physical need for air and food.It is especially unfortunate, then, that most of us have no idea what unconditional love really is, and we prove our ignorance with our horrifying divorce rate, the incidence of alco hol and drug addiction in our country, the violence in our schools, and our overflowing jails. Our misconceptions of unconditional love began in early childhood, where we saw that when we did all the right things—when we were clean, quiet, obedient and otherwise “good”—people “loved” us. They smiled at us and spoke in gentle tones. But we also saw that when we were “bad,” all those signs of “love” instantly vanished. In short, we were taught by consistent experience t hat love was conditional, that we had to buy “love” from the people around us with our words and behavior. So what’s wrong with conditional love? We see it everywhere we look, so what could be wrong with it? Imagine that every time you pay me fifty dollars, I tell you I love you. We could do that all day, but at the end of the day would you feel loved? No, because you’d know that I “loved” you only because you paid me. We simply can’t feel fulfilled by love we pay for. We can feel loved only when it is freely, unconditionally given to us. The instant we do anything at all to win the approval or respect of other people—with what we say, what we do, how we look—we are paying for the attention and affection we receive, and we can’t feel genuinely loved.A New Definition of Love: Real LoveThere’s only one kind of love that can fill us up, make us whole, and give us the happiness we all want: unconditional love or true love. It is unconditional love that we all seek, and somehow we intuitively realize that anything other than that kind of love isn’t really love at all—it’s an imitation of the real thing.Unconditional love—true love—is so different from the kind of love most of ushave known all our lives that it deserves both a name—Real Love—and definition of its own: Real Love is caring about the happiness of another person without any thought for what we might get for ourselves. It’s also Real Love when other people care about our happiness unconditionally. It is not Real Lov e when other people like us for doing what they want. Under those conditions we’re just paying for love again. We can be certain that we’re receiving Real Love only when we make foolish mistakes, when we fail to do what other people want, and even when we get in their way, but they do n’t feel disappointed or irritated at us. That is Real Love (true uncondition al love), and that love alone has the p ower to heal all wounds, bind people togethe r, and create relationships quite beyond our present capacity to imagine..

I Am Healing

I Am HealingI Am HealingHe was admitted to emergency receiving and placed on the cardiac floor.Long hair, unshaven, dirty, dangerously obese, with a black motorcycle jacket tossed on the bottom shelf of the stretcher,he was an outsider to this sterile world of shining terrazzo floors, efficient uniformed professionals, and strict infection control procedures.Definitely an untouchable. The nurse s at the station looked w ide-eyed as this mound of humanity wa wheeled by,each glancing nervously at Bonnie, the head nurse."Let this one not be ine to adm int, bathe and tend to..."was their pleading, unspoken message. One of the true marks of a leader, a consummate professional, is to do the unthinkable. To tackle the impossible. To touch the untouchable. It was Bonnie who said,"I want this patient myself."Highly unusual for a headnurse--unconventional--but the stuff out of which human spirits thrive, heal and soar.As she donned her laex gloves and proceeded to bathe this huge, very unclean man,her heart almost broke.Where was his family?Who was his mother? What was he like as a little boy?She hummed quietly as she worked. It seemed to ease the fear and embarrassment she knew he must be feeling. And then on a whim she said,"We don't have time for back rubs much in hospitals these days, but I bet one would really feel good. And it would help relax your muscles and start to heal. That is what this place is all about...a place to heal."The thick, scaly, ruddy skin told a story of an abusive lifestyle:probably lots of addictive behavior with food, alcohol and drugs. As she rubbed those taut muscles, she hummed and prayed, she prayed for the soul rejected by life's rudeness and striving for acceptance in a hard, hostile world. The finale was warmed lotion and baby power.Almost laughable--such a contrast to this huge, foreign surface. As he rolled onto his back, tears ran down his cheeks and his chin trembled.Wi th amazingly beautiful brown eyes,he smiled and sai d i n a quivering voice,"No one has touched me for years.Thank you.I am healing."

Keeping a journal
Keeping a journal
If you are serious about becoming a
wealthy, powerful, sophisticated, healthy, influential, cultured and unique individual, keep a journal.Don't trust your memory. When you listen to something valuable, write it down. When you come across something importantk, write it down.
I used to take n otes on long sheets, narrow sheets, little sheets and pieces of paper thrown in a drawer. Then I found out that the best way to organize those ideas is to keep a journal.I've been keeping these journals since the age of twenty-five.The discipline makes up a valuable part of my learning, and the journals are a valuable part of my library.
I must admit,if you got a glimpse of my journals, you'd have to say that I am a serious student.I am not just committed to my craft.I'm committed to
life, committed to learning new concepts and skills.I want to see what I can do with seed ,soil, sunshine and rain to turn them into the building blocks of a productive life.
The first treasure is your pictures.Take a lot of picture s.Don't lazy in capturing the event. How long does it take to capture the event?A fraction of a second. So don't miss thhe pictures. When you're gone, they will keep the memories alive.
The second treasure is your library. This is the library that taught you, that instructed you, that helped you def end your ideals. It helped you to dev elop a philosophy. It helped you becomne wealthy, powerful, healthy, sophis ticated, and unique.Your librar y,the books that instructed you,fed your mind and fed your soul,is one of the greatest gi fts you can leave behind.
The third treasure is your journals:the ideas that picked up,the imformation that you meticulously gathered. But of the three, journal writing is one of the greatest indications that you're serious student.Taking pictures,th at is pretty
easy.Buying a book at a bookstore, that's pretty easy.It is a little more challenging to be a student of your own life, your own future, and your own destiny.Take the time to keep notes and to keep journal. You will be so glad you did. What a treasure to leave behind when you go!What a treasure to enjoy to day!
