I stopped at a gas station (加油站) about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register (收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I get out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery (电池) was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership—a shop selling cars—was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.Just how friendly is Friendly Ford? I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment; so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.Thank you—two powerful words. His wife died when the child was in his early teens. So Fitzgerald devoted himself to fathering the kid. Unfortunately the son died in his late teens.Meanwhile, Fitzgerald’s wealth greatly increased. He spent a lot on art works of the masters. Later Fitzgeraldhimself became seriously ill. Before his death, he had carefully prepared his will as to how his wealth would be settled—to sell his entire collection at an auction (拍卖).Because of the large quantity and high quality of his collection, a huge crowd of possible buyers gathered for the auction. Many of them were museum directors and private collectors eager to bid (出价). Before the auction, the art works were shown, among which was a painting of Fitzgerald’s son by an unknown artist. Because of its poor quality, it received little attention. When it was time for the auction, the auctioneer gaveled (敲槌) the crowd to attention. First the lawyer read from Fitzgerald’s will that the first art work to be auctioned was the painting of his son.The poor-quality painting didn’t receive any bidders… except one—the old servant who had served the son and loved him, and who for emotional reasons offered the only bid.As soon as the servant bought the painting for less than one English pound, the auctioneer stopped the bidding and asked the lawyer to read again from the will. The crowd became quiet, and the lawyer read from the will: “Whoever buys the painting of my son gets all my collection.” Then the auction was over.56.
The rain stopped.主谓These children are playing.主谓The sun rises in the east.
He likes English. My mother is doing housework. These children are playing football.
I gave him my book. Smith bought the boy a toy. My mother wrote me a letter.
I gave you a book. = I gave a book to you.
He bought the boy a toy. = He bought a toy for the boy.

Some people prefer to “pick up”the language by reading books or magazines, watching films, visiting the country where the target language is spoken, etc. They focus on the meanings of words and don't worry too much about the language forms used. This method often suits children if they find themselves in a foreign country or with foreign friends. However, this approach doesn't suit everyone if your aim is to become good at writing.Probably the most common way to learn a language is in a classroom with a teacher. The teacher can explain difficult words, give guidance, provide extra motivation and feedback on progress. Unfortunately, some people do not have very pleasant experiences of learning a language in the classroom. Language learning can be great fun. But your writing level will be increased most efficiently this way. Besides learning in a classroom, you can use a personal tutor and arrange a very flexible system of tuition. That means if you are busy at a particular time, you can still arrange to have your language tuition at a time that suits you. With recent improvements in modern technology, it is now possible to purchase a wide range of multi-media materials for learning a language. You can teach yourself using cassettes, videos, CD- ROMs, books, and any combination of these. This approach is best suited to students who are self-disciplined and well-organized. It also tends to assist with the development of reading and listening skills. But be sure to pick out materials of high quality. If you want to become fluent at speaking and writing a language, you'll also benefit from cooperating with other users.60. The method mentioned in the first paragraph can be considered _______.A. passive learningB. natural and active learningC. the most effective learning methodD. a structured learning method61. The underlined word “flexible”in the second paragraph means “________”.A. strictB. pleasantC. safeD. free62. From the passage, we can NOT learn that ________.A. people need to care about grammar when speaking a languageB. classroom studying can be boring sometimesC. not all learning materials can help improve our language levelD. students lacking self-control may not benefit much from self-study63. What might be talked about in the next passage?A. How to find a personal tutor.B. How to deal with the difficulties in study.C. How to cooperate with other language learners.D. How to find the best studying method.。

Yet, it turns out that overweight may damage cognitive functions such as memory and attention. Losing weight, therefore, may help improve these mental functions, according to a new research led by John Gunstad, assistant professor of psychology at Kent State University.Growing evidence suggests that being fat is linked to cognitive deficits (缺陷). So Gunstad and his team guessed that losing weight might improve mental function. For their study, they measured memory and attention in a group of 150 overweight participants, some of whom had some kind of operation for weight loss and some did not. All of the volunteers completed mental skills tests to assess their abilities of memory and attention at the beginning of the study, and again 12 weeks later. To begin with, about 24% of the patients showed damaged learning and 23% showed signs of poor memory when tested. At the end of the study, those who had lost weight after operation improved their scores into the average or above average range for cognitive functions. Scores for the volunteers who didn’t lose weight dropped even further. The study helped Gunstad to find out whether losing weight had any effect on mental function. Now that he’s seen the positive effect that weight loss can have on memory and attention, he says he will next study those who choose to lose weight by the traditional way—eating healthier and getting more active. He expects that losing weight in this way will have a similarly positive effect on the brain. “If we can improve the condition with operations, then we can probably produce the same change with behavioral weight loss as well,” he says. 5.There is less research on overweight and cognitive functions because researchers _____.A. believe overweight only affects our bodyB. have focused on ways to sharpen people’s mindC. do not consider overweight a main cause for low cognitive abilityD. are clear about the relation between weight and mental functions6.The result of Gunstad’s study shows that ______.A. losing weight has little effect on people’s memoryB. losing weight can improve people’s mental functionsC. overweight people are likely to have psychology problemsD. overweight people’s abilities of concentration differ greatly7.What is Gunstad planning to prove next in his research?A. Slim people are smarter than overweight people.B. Healthy diet is better than exercise in losing weight.C. Traditional ways of losing weight are better than operation.D. Overweight people will get smarter by taking more exercise.8.Which of the following is the best title for the text?A. Body Weight and HealthB. Losing Weight by OperationC.
