Synthesis
1. What is synthesis?
Steps
1. Craft a thesis 2. Locate two differently-authored sources 3. Contributions of the two sources 4. Source order 5. Relationship between the two sources 6. Contribution transitions 7. Frame C1 8. Contribution transitions and frame C2 9. Draft interpretations 10. Draft evaluation statements and conclude.
Step 10: Put it all together
Step 7: relationship transitions and frame C2
Like (author of C1), (author of C2) contends (repeat common argument). He writes… (author of C2) builds on the (contribution C1) (verb) by (author of C1) by (contribution C2). He explains, (author of C2) points out that the trend that (author of C1) identifies is in large part caused by (insert cause).
“Second, the journalist has a bias in favor of information that interests his audience. This helps explain the favorite complaint about news –that it accentuates the negative. People’s curiosity shows a tropism for misfortune.”
Step 4: determine source order
C1: definition ------C2: example C1: example-------C2: solution C1: cause-----------C2: effect C1: effect------------C2: solution C1: problem--------C2: example/solution
Step 8: Draft interpretations
Example Extend the example Analogy Close textual analysis Shared experiences consequence
Step 9: evaluation
SINCE OBSERVATION, THESIS POSITION Clearly, both of these scenarios given by Fuller and Fedler concur that this bias of interest is both prevalent and evident in daily journalistic practices, further proving that the news media has ethical problems that need to be addressed.
How do you like the thesis? Journalism today is in a state of ethical crisis, and continues to become more corrupt with each passing day. In order to remedy this situation, the news media must seek and establish a new code of conduct. In this essay, I propose to explore three primary problems with journalistic standards and values. First, the news industry is primarily driven by profit. Second, journalists often only cover what their target readers want to read, therefore subjecting themselves to a bias of interest and possibly leaving their readers blind and oblivious to new topics that may be important. Third, although many news consumers believe what they are told is accurate, this is unfortunately not the case.
Step 1: Thesis
Step 2: Two sources
Ex. Which two sources do you think will work best for the main idea?
“Newspapers are also most likely to publish stories that they have traditionally published. The Daily News in NYC has traditionally placed a greater emphasis on crime, sex, sports, and photographs than the New York Time, which appeals to a more sophisticated audience and places a greater emphasis on political, business, and foreign news.”
Name of the author Title of the work Credentials of author Verb of attribution Contribution transitions
FORMULA: In “TITLE OF WORK”, CREDENTIALS +NAME OF THE AUTHOR+CONTRIBUTION. He/She VERB OF ATTRIBUTION, “C1”… In Reporting for the Print Media, author Fred Fedler identifies a cause of the inaccuracy in wk.baidu.comews reports. He explains,
Step 3: contributions of the sources
Provides a definition Provides an example Identifies a cause Identifies an effect Explains the problem Proposes a solution
