Unit 2 TRANSFORMERA: TransformerUse of TransformersIf an inventory were taken if the electrical appliances in the home or of the modern electrical equipment in industry that has been added in the past ten years, it would be found that the use of electrical appliances and equipment has greatly increase. The demand for electrical power has more than doubled in the past ten years and it is predicted that the demand will double again in less than ten years. This increase along with the trend of people and industry to migrate to the suburbs has created the problem of transmitting larger amounts of electrical power over longer distances than ever before.Fortunately, there is at our disposal a ―Transformer‖ which is a piece of electrical supply equipment that makes it possible to efficiently transmit large amounts of electrical power over long distances. In construction a transformer is an efficient, relatively simple, quiet device that has no moving parts thus limiting maintenance costs. Although it is simple in construction, it is somewhat complex in operation.Increase of VoltageThe transformer is used in the transmission and distribution of power to reduce the conductor size in line construction. Electric power, being the product of voltage and current, may result from multiplying a very large current by a very small voltage; that is, in transmitting any given power, if the voltage factor is increase. Electrical voltage ( volts) is the force which moves electrons through conductors to result in current (amps) flow. As the cross-section or size of the line conductors is determined by the amount of current it will carry, it may be smaller in size if the current is decrease.It has been found that the size of the conductor necessary for transmitting a given amount of power a given distance depends inversely upon the square of the voltage, that is, if the voltage between transmission lines is doubled, a conductor only one-fourth as large is necessary to transmit the same power over the same distance with the same line loss. If the voltage is increase three times, the size of the line conductor is only one-ninth.In the transmission of electrical power the function of the transformer is to raise or ―step-up‖ the voltage at the generator to a much higher value, thus reducing the size of the transmission conductor. It is obvious that the installation and maintenance cost will be less for a smaller conductor.Alternating current generators (alternators) normally produce voltages of up to 22,000 volts which must in turn be stepped-up to a higher voltage for economical transmission to the load or to the place where the power will be used. To transmit industrial loads for short distances or for low power demand areas such as residential the transmission lines usually operate at voltages of 12,470; 13,200; 13,800 or 14,400. To transmit large amounts of power over a considerable distance very high voltages are necessary. Experimental work has progressed to the point where engineers have found that voltages of 750,000 volts can be successfully and economically used over relatively short distances. For longer distances an even higher voltage is used. The transmission lines which carry power from Boulder Dam to the west coast operate at a voltage of about 500,000 volts. It may be of interest that even at this extra high voltage, special design is used for the transmission lines to reduce their weight. They are constructed of interlocking sections of hollow aluminum tubes which permits them to be strung between widely-separated towers.Reduction of V oltageWhile it is desirable to resort to very high voltages for transmission purposes, such voltages are undesirable when electrical power is distributed among buildings or within densely populated areas. It is the function of a transformer to lower or step-down the voltage at the load or the building where the power is to be used to a value that is safe and economical for use inside a residential, commercial or industrial building. For residential wring, the normal voltage is 115/230 volts, whereas the voltage in a commercial or industrial building is usually 120/380 volts for appliances and incandescent lighting and 277/480 volts for fluorescent light and power. In large commercial buildings and industrial plants the modern trend is to use a 12,470 to 24,000 volt distribution system. Therefore, type testing of transformers ask for SC tests only, as it is assumed that this is the worst case with regard to the maximum forces.In the past, it was discussed very often in several panels to what extend inrush current (IR) currents are a jeopardy for the transformer windings(变压器绕组). As it is well known, the value of these IR currents occurring when energizing unloaded transformers can be in the same order of magnitude as a fault current, thus producing significant electromagnetic forces. The difference to SC is that the IR may last for several tens of seconds, whereas a fault normally is cleared within tens of milliseconds. In addition, an IR situation is much more frequently as this can be considered as normal service operation.Recent cases of insulation failures in power transformers that were frequently energized under no load condition support the suspicion of many people that IR currents have a jeopardous effect. It is assumed that due to the unbalanced magnetomotive force (MMF) and high saturation of the transformer core local (axial) forces under severe IR conditions, especially on the tap changer (TC) coils, could exceed the values taken as dimensioning basis. So, it seems likely possible that conductor and winding insulation is damaged due to mechanical overstress at IR.Although it is requested by many utilities that high IR currents shall indeed be avoided from a systems operation point of view, possible damaging effects to the transformer itself have rarely been investigated. To the author’s knowledge, only one paper deals with forces on transformer windings at IR conditions where it is shown that the windings exhibit fairly large axia l forces, exceeding those built up under short circuit conditions.Out-of-phase synchronization may also cause unbalanced MMF conditions in step up transformers. Force calculations show that the axial forces in the windings can be two to ten times higher than under SC conditions. However, the magnetic field patterns caused by such erroneous operations are different to the ones at IR conditions, because when energizing unloaded transformers the secondary (mostly the low voltage) side is not excited at all.A first rough estimation of the distribution of the radial magnetic field component along transformer coils was presented in [4]. The results show that the local radial magnetic field at the ends of tap changer coils to be up to 80% higher at IR compared to SC conditions, assuming the IR current to be as high as the SC current.In order to learn more about how the IR current produces mechanical forces to the transformer windings, the situation of a three-legged step up transformer was modeled by means of a suitable computer code. Two-and three-dimensional calculations were carried out. The goal was to calculate the forces in qualitative comparison to those that occur at SC.
