Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:Philanthropy is a way that people and organizations show concern for others or work to improve the world. Approximately 72 percent of Americans donate to charity (慈善机构), and 51 percent do volunteer work. About 2 millions not-for-profit organizations and charities in the United States today receive this help. There are three types of philanthropists: individuals, foundations, and private corporations. Individuals give money or volunteer their time to support causes that are important to them. Foundations are organizations started by very wealthy individuals. Their “business” is not to make a profit but to give money aw ay to not-for-profits. Private corporations may also use a portion of their business profits to make donations, or they may give away their products or services free of charge. However, foundations and corporations are responsible for only 20 percent of charitable donations; 80 percent comes from individuals. What makes people and institutions give away their time and money? One reason is altruism, the unselfish desire to help other people and make the world a better place. Other reasons involve personal interest. Under US tax law, an individual or business does not have to pay income tax on money that is donated to charity. For extremely wealthy individuals and corporations, this can mean millions of dollars they do not have to pay in taxes to the government. In addition to tax benefits, donors often receive favorable publicity for making donations, and they have an opportunity to influence the world around them.31. T hey won’t.If you don’t invest some quality time now in taking a true, honest and truthful look at the state of your relationship, you could stay stuck in this place of indecision for a verylong time. Many people waste so much precious time when they could be experiencing an incredible relationship filled with love, passion and joy, either in their current relationship or one that is more of what they want. We encourage you to take an honest look at your situation and feel how much pain you’ve been feeling about this relationship. If having a great relationship is important to you, you need to decide that you’re not willing to live without the love, passion, intimacy, and tenderness. You have to take the first step to create the kind of relationship and love you want in your life. We’re not suggesting that you should leave your current relationship or marriage and head out looking for the new love of your life. That’s your decision and one that should only be made after some careful insight and thinking. What we are telling you is that life is too short to go through it without having the love you want and the love that’s possible for all of us. If you are in a relationship that is causing you to wonder whether you should stay in it or leave—i t’s important that you take some time now to make it clear so that you’ll be able to ask yourself openly and honestly whether you’ll be able to heal the challenges.36. Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements with no more than 10 words. Be sure to write your answers on Answer Sheet (2).German careers or jobs fall into several categories. First, there are positions that require strong ability in German with a company in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. This category may also include a job requiring good German and/or bilingual (双语的) skillswithin a company doing business in the US, Canada, Mexico or elsewhere. Secondly, there are jobs that can be done in English in German Europe. Then there are German companies abroad. Most minor and many major positions are filled by recruiting German, Austrian or Swiss nationals. If you are already in German Europe, you may have a better chance of finding a job. In any case, it is best if your company can handle all the formalities involved when a foreign national takes a job in Germany. There are also relocation services that can help with this if you don’t have any ideas yourself. The German unemployment rate has remained at a fairly high level over the last decade. It is almost impossible for a non-German to get a job in Germany unless she/he can prove that it can’t be done by a German national. In certain fields, such as computer science or information systems, “green card” foreign workers have been imported, but this practice is still uncommon. The reality of searching for and finding a suitable position in German Europe or with a German firm means two main things: knowledge and planning. Too many times, job seekers have unrealistic expectations. Often they overestimate their language skills and underestimate the level of competition. Another danger is ignoring culture shock. That’s why we also offer links to culture-related sites. For getting most German jobs, it is your ability in a field—computers, teaching, advertising, etc.—rather than your German skills that will be the biggest factor in a successful search. But all other things being equal between you and another candidate, it is the person with the best language skills who usually gets the job.41. What is the requirement of the job within a company doing business in the US,Canada, Mexico or elsewhere included in the first category?42. What might the company do for the benefit of a foreign employee?43. What seems to be “hot” fields if you are to find a job in German?44. What is the reason for the author to offer links to culture-related sites?45. What is more important to get most German jobs according to the passage?Part III Vocabulary and Structure (25 marks)Section A (15 marks, mark each)Directions: There are 30 incomplete sentences in this part. It offers numerous physical, mental, and social benefits that contribute to an overall sense of well-being. In this essay, we will explore the importance of regular exercise and its positive impact on our lives.Firstly, regular exercise plays a vital role in improving our physical health. Engaging in physical activities such as running, swimming, or cycling helps to strengthen our muscles and bones. It also enhances cardiovascular fitness, leading to a reduced risk of heart diseases and other chronic conditions. Furthermore, exercise promotes weight management and helps to prevent obesity, a growing problem in modern society. In addition to physical health, exercise greatly contributes to our mental well-being. Engaging in exercise releases endorphins, often referred to as the "feel-good" hormones, which elevate our mood and reduce stress and anxiety. Regular exercise can also alleviate symptoms of depression and improve overall cognitive function. It provides an opportunity for self-reflection and relaxation, acting as a positive outlet for coping with life's challenges.Furthermore, exercise offers a platform for social interaction, which is crucial for our overall well-being. Participating in group activities, such as team sports or fitness classes, allows us to connect with others who share similar interests. These social interactions foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie, reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation. Moreover, exercise can serve as a bonding activity among friends, family members, or colleagues, leading to stronger relationships and increased social support. To conclude, regular exercise is essential for a healthy and fulfilling life. It not only improves physical health and fitness but also enhances mental well-being and fosters social connections. Incorporating exercise into our daily routines should be a priority for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level. So, let's make a commitment to prioritize our health and embrace regular exercise for a happier and healthier future.。

Reading Comprehension (20 points, 2 points for each)Passage OneAs Artificial Intelligence(AI)becomes increasingly sophisticated, there are growing concerns that robots could become a threat. This danger can be avoided, according to computer science professor Stuart Russell, if we figure out how to turn human values into a programmable code.Russell argues that as robots take on more complicated tasks,it’s necessary to translate our morals into AI language. For example, if a robot does chores around the house, you wouldn’t want it to put the pet cat in the oven to make dinner for the hungry children. “You would want that robot preloaded with a good set of values,” said Russell. Some robots are already programmed with basic human values. For example, mobile robots have been programmed to keep a comfortable distance from humans. Obviously there are cultural differences, but if you were talking to another person and they came up close in your personal space, you wouldn’t think that’s the kind of thing a properlybrought-up person would do.It will be possible to create more sophisticated moral machines, if only we can find a way to set out human values as clear rules. It will be possible to create more sophisticated moral machines, if only we can find a way to set out human values as clear rules.Robots could also learn values from drawing patterns from large sets of data on human behavior. They are dangerous only if programmers are careless. The biggest concern with robots going against human values is that human beings fail to so sufficient testing and they’ve produced a system that will break some kind of taboo (禁忌).One simple check would be to program a robot to check the correct course of action with a human when presented with an unusual situation. If the robot is unsure whether an animal is suitable for the microwave, it has theopportunity to stop, send out beeps(嘟嘟声), and ask for directions from a human. If we humans aren’t quite sure about a decision,we go and ask somebody else. The most difficult step in programming values will be deciding exactly what webelieve in moral, and how to create a set of ethical rules. But if we come up with ananswer, robots could be good for humanity.29. What does the author say about the threat of robots?may constitute a challenge to computer programmers.accompanies all machinery involving high technology.can be avoided if human values are translated into their language.has become an inevitable peril as technology gets more sophisticated.30. What would we think of a person who invades our personal space according to theauthor?are aggressive.are outgoing.are ignorant.are ill-bred.do robots learn human values?A. By interacting with humans in everyday life situations.B. By following the daily routines of civilized human beings.C. By picking up patterns from massive data on human behavior.3D. By imitating the behavior of property brought-up human beings.will a well-programmed robot do when facing an unusual situation?A. keep a distance from possible dangers.B. Stop to seek advice from a human being.C. Trigger its built-in alarm system at once.D. Do sufficient testing before taking action.is most difficult to do when we turn human values into a programmable code?A. Determine what is moral and ethical.B. Design some large-scale experiments.C. Set rules for man-machine interaction.D. Develop a more sophisticated program.Passage TwoWhy do some people live to be older than others You know the standard explanations: keeping a moderate diet, engaging in regular exercise, etc. But what effect does your personality have on your longevity(长寿)Do some kinds of personalities lead to longer lives A new study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society looked at this question by examining the personality characteristics of 246 children of people who had lived to be at least 100.The study shows that those living the longest are more outgoing, more active and less neurotic (神经质的) than other people. Long-living women are also more likely to be sympathetic and cooperative than women with a normal life span. These findings are in agreement with what you would expect from the evolutionary theory: those who like to make friends and help others can gather enough resources to make it through tough times. Interestingly, however, other characteristics that you might consider advantageous had no impact on whether study participants were likely to live longer. Those who were more self-disciplined, for instance, were no more likely to live to be very old. Also, being open to new ideas had no relationship to long life, which might explain all those bad-tempered old people who are fixed in their ways.Whether you can successfully change your personality as an adult is the subject of a longstanding psychological debate. But the new paper suggests that if you want long life, you should strive to be as outgoing as possible.Unfortunately, another recent study shows that your mother’s personality may also help determine your longevity. That study looked at nearly 28,000 Norwegian mothers and found that those moms who were more anxious, depressed and angry were more likely to feed their kids unhealthy diets. Patterns of childhood eating can be hard to break when we’re adults, which may mean that kids of depressed moms end up dying younger. Personality isn’t destiny(命运), and everyone knows that individuals can learn to change. But both studies show that long life isn’t just a matter of your physical health but of your mental health.34. The aim of the study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society is____.A. to see whether people’s personality affects their life spanB. to find out if one’s lifestyle has any effect on their healthC. to investigate the role of exercise in living a long lifeD. to examine all the factors contributing to longevity35. What does the author imply about outgoing and sympathetic people?A. They have a good understanding of evolution.B. They are better at negotiating an agreement.C. They generally appear more resourceful.D. They are more likely to get over hardship.36. What finding of the study might prove somewhat out of our expectation?A. Easy-going people can also live a relatively long life.B. Personality characteristics that prove advantageous actually vary with times.C. Such personality characteristics as self-discipline have no effect on longevity.D. Readiness to accept new ideas helps one enjoy longevity.37. What does the recent study of Norwegian mothers show?A. Children’s personality characteristics are invariably determined by their mothers.B. People with unhealthy eating habits are likely to die sooner.C. Mothers’ influence on children may last longer than fathers’.D. Mothers’ negative personality characteristics may affect their children’s life spans.38. What can we learn from the findings of the two new studies?A. Anxiety and depression more often than not cut short one’s life span.B. Longevity results from a combination of mental and physical health.C. Personality plays a decisive role in how healthy one is.D. Health is in large part related to one’s lifestyle.VI. In our society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did, to find better jobs, to make more money and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, that is another cause of the gap between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other.
The gas shortage has caused a big problem for Americans. But the answer will not be a bigger system of public transportation. The real solution will have to be a new kind of car, one that does not use so muchgas.
The third reason is the most important one, though. The American spirit of independence is what really made cars popular. Americans don’t like to wait for a bus or a train or even a plane. They don’t like to have to follow an exact schedule. A car gives them the freedom to schedule their own time. And this is the freedom that Americans want most to have.

Then mark the corresponding letter on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.Question 46-50 are based on the following passage.English is now the international language for airline pilots, scientists, medical experts, businessmen and many others. Consequently, more and more people are learning it. The BBC's English teaching radio programs are broadcast daily to four continents and supplied to radio stations in 120 countries. Films and video are on the air or used in institutions in over 100 countries. All this helps to add more speakers to the estimated 100 million who use English as a second language. The rush to learn English has reached even China. The main reason for the upsurge in interest is the recent increase in China's contacts with the outside world.Unlike many other widely used languages, English can be correctly used in very simple form with less than one thousand basic words and very few grammatical rules. This was pointed out in the 1920's by two Cambridge scholars, Ogden and Richards, who devised a system called "Basic English". Another reason for the popularity of English is that English-speaking countries are spread throughout the world. An estimated 310 million people in Britain. U. S. A. , Canada, Australia, South Africa, etc. use English as their mother tongue. Also in former British colonial areas in Africa and Asia where many local languages are spoken, no common language has been found which would make a suitable substitute for English. In Delhi, although nationalists would prefer to phase out the use of English, the man from South India finds English more acceptable than Hindi, while the northerner prefers English to any of the southern languages. Turning from India to Africa, a similar problem exists. However reluctantAfrican nations are to use English and, as it were, subject themselves to a kind of "cultural imperialism", here seems to be no alternative language which will do the job of communication effectively. The view that spreading the use of English is entirely beneficial has its opponents. Some teachers who have returned from overseas consider it creates a wider gap between those who are educated and those who have little or no education. Nevertheless, in many parts of the world, the technical and scientific knowledge needed to develop a country's resources and improve people's living conditions, is just not available in the mother tongue. A second language opens the door to the would-wide sharing of skills and discoveries in science, engineering and medicine. As for the future, it seems certain that English in one form or another will be spoken by far more people than it is today. It will doubtless continue to change and develop as a living language always does.46. Why do many 3rd World people oppose the use of English in their countries?A) They consider it a form of cultural imperialism.B) The English language has produced racism.C) Other languages are easier to learn.D) They oppose modernization in general.47. Like many bachelors approaching middle age,he was getting rather set in his ways.He caught the same train to London every morning, ate his lunch in the same crowded restaurant near the office where he worked and always came home on the 6:00 train.People were so used to seeing Jonathan set off at a quarter past eight, dressed in a simple dark suit, wearing a black bowler hat and carrying a rolled umbrella on his arm, that they said you didn't need to wear a watch if you lived in Compton Street.Ever since Jonathan had set up house in Compton Street,he had looked after it very carefully. He worked hard in the garden every Sunday and set out to impress the neighbors with his flower beds and lawn. Before he left the house in the morning she carefully closed all the doors downstairs, opened some windows to let the air in and locked the front door.Everything Jonathan did was tidy and systematic. One summer evening Jonathan returned home as usual at five minutes to seven precisely. When he opened the front gate he immediately noticed something strange. There was a heavy footprint in the earth in one of the flower beds.Jonathan was just going to blame the milkman or the postman when he noticed that one of the white lace curtains in the front room downstairs was out of place.Jonathan never leftanything out of place. He walked up to the front door and opened it quietly. He listened carefully fora few moments but could hear nothing. The front-room door was half-open. Jonathan studied it thoughtfully, wondering if he had forgotten to close it that morning. He had never forgotten before. He stepped silently across the hall to the door and looked inside the room. The shadow of a man was clearly reflected on the far wall in the evening sunlight. He had obviously been standing behind the door since Jonathan’s return.Jonathan grabbed the door-handle,slammed the door and turned the key. Then he calmly picked up the telephone in the hall and set about calling the police. The burglar,a tall,thick-set,bearded fellow, tried to climb through a window to get out but Jonathan had expected that.He set about him with his umbrella, using it like a sword,Three minutes later the police arrived on the scene.
