高中生必备英语美文背诵:The Four Freedoms
适合高中生背诵的经典英语短文
The Force of Habits之邯郸勺丸创作Habits, whether good or bad, are gradually formed. The more we do a thing, the more we tend to like doing it; and if we do not continue to do it, we feel uncomfortable. This is called the force of habits, and the force of habits should be fought against. This applies even to such good things as work or rest. Some people form a bad habit of working too much, and others of idling too much. Bad habits, once formed, are difficult to get rid of.The wise man always remembers to check any bad habit. He warns himself “I am now becoming idle” or “I like too many sweets” or “I smoke too much”. And then adds, “I will get myself out of this bad habit at once.”The Way to Achieve SuccessMany people say that they owe much of it to the cultivation of certain good habits in early life. In forming good habits, I think we should pay attention to four things, that is honesty, industry, enthusiasm and thrift.“Honesty is the best policy.” This is a proverb to which we must pay attention. There are so many temptations in society that through a little carelessness we may go astray. But when we are honest, people will not be dishonest to us.Industry gives every man and woman, every boy and girl, proper work to do. To do nothing is going to ruin oneself.Enthusiasm is a great force. One’s soul will expand if one devotesoneself to a noble cause. The difficulties in our way are tremendous, but what can we not accomplish, if with enthusiasm? There are many proverbs, which set forth the advantages of thrift. Since we live in the world in which money is a very powerful thing, we should always try to save a portion of our earnings for future use. These are the four things to which we must pay attention. It is only by this way that we can achieve success.TV --- A Blessing or a Curse? As TV enters more and more families, people begin to wonder about its advantages and disadvantages. Some believe it is a blessing, others hold that it is a curse to society.TV, as a mass media, can bring to people new information on economies, culture, arts, and many other fields. People can enjoy their favorite programs at home. In some countries, some TV stations provide such programs as looking for dangerous criminals and lost children, helping to find an ideal lover, and others which are quite beneficial to society, some TV stations provide various useful seminars for people of various ages and social status. But on the other hand, TV may exert bad influence on people. Some programs are full of violence. As a result, people, especially juveniles, are led to commit crimes. An increasing number of people are so indulged in TV programs that some even neglect their duties. In my opinion, the attitude towards TV all depends on oneself. People should choose those programs, which are useful, and can bring to them the sense of beauty. On Test and Test TakingThe purpose of a test is to check how much we students have learned about a subject. It not only helps make our newly acquired knowledge permanent, but also enables us to find out what needs to spend more time improving. But some students do not deal with test correctly. Some of them are afraid of failing in a test. They cheat even at the risk of being caught on exams. Though cheating might give one “better grades”, it adds nothing to one’s knowledge. This dishonest behavior will do one more harm than good.I think that we go to college in order to have our further studies, and prepare us to be qualified for the future job. Therefore, we should take a correct attitude towards test. As long as we study diligently and review our lessons regularly, we are sure to be used to serve its real purpose. The DictionaryThe dictionary is a living teacher. Whenever you come across a new word, just consult it and you will get a clear definition. Every student, whether attending school or self-taught, should always have a dictionary at hand. As a study aid, it is convenient, inexpensive and almost omniscient (all-knowing).Language skills will develop with your constant use of various dictionaries. The more you use them, the more familiar you will become with them. Sooner or later, you will be quite skilled in finding the page, scanning the entries and locating the exact meanings of the new words. But you should have one thing in mind. As a language student, you can never become too much attached to dictionaries; basic language skills do not come from dictionaries, but from your practice. Expose yourself to the language by listening, speaking, reading and writing more, and that is the only way to the mastery of a language. On LearningLearning is one’s own business, which cannot rely on others. As we know, learning is a process of accumulating knowledge. It is one’s life-long task, which cannot be accomplished in one move. A successful learner is an independent one who has both an indomitable (unyielding) will and amazing endurance. He will try to discover his own way of learning. Instead of waiting for the teacher’s help, he will make efforts to create favorable conditions on his own initiative. It will certainly be of great help, if there is good environment, sufficient books and equipment, as well as instructions from teacher and beneficial friends. But even if one has got all these favorable conditions, one cannot be sure to succeed in learning. So the most important factor in learning consists in one’s own effort. To learn is rather a painstaking and persevering business. Many a man is a failure because he cannot bear such indispensable hardships. Unremitting (never stopping) efforts can compensate for the lack of talents and thus enable one to get considerable progress in learning. Is Failure a Bad Thing?Failure is a common occurrence (happening) in our daily life. Whatever we do, there are always two possible results: success or failure. Although everyone wants to succeed in what he tries, sometimes failure can’t be avoided.Different people hold different attitudes towards failure. When faced with it, some can stand up to it, draw a useful lesson from it and try their best to fulfill what they are determined to do. Others, however, lose heart and give in. They do nothing but complain about themselves and objective conditions. As a popular saying goes, “Failure teaches success.” In my opinion, what really counts is not the failure itself, but the proper attitude we should take after it. I trust that as long as we keep to what is right and correct what is wrong, that is to say, learn a lesson from failure, we will be certain to succeed. So I am of the opinion that failure is not a bad thing.RecreationIt is impossible to keep in good health unless we take sufficient (enough) recreation. The mind, too, requires change to make it acute (sharp) and vigorous. There is much truth in the old saying, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”There are many games for people to indulge (enjoy) after their work of study. Among them are football, tennis, and kite-flying. Other forms of recreation are boating, fishing, gardening, cycling, walking, chess-playing, and reading. Those who spend most of their time in the open airand have constant muscular employment, should adopt reading or some other quiet forms of recreation. Persons who sit much at their business should take a kind of recreation that will supply their muscles with exercise.Recreation provides people with the kind of rest and relaxation. It makes people feel happy, energetic and confident, meanwhile it prepares people to do much better than ever in their daily work.On Today’s EducationI think one of the main problems with today’s education is that too much emphasis is placed on test score. It has become the most important criterion (standard) for college enrollment. A student, however creative and intelligent, will not be admitted into a college for his total scores are just one point less than required. It is also on of the crucial (decisive) factors either in job assignment or in employment competitions. The competition for high scores among students becomes intense. Students find themselves concentrating more on strategies to achieve high scores than on acquiring the knowledge. They will play truant (stay away from) of some subsidiary (less important) courses and skip over the substance, which will not be tested on.Teachers are apt to give their students high scores. As their job is judged mainly by the students’ performance in terms of scores, some teachers tend to set easy papers to test their students on or narrow down the scope of the exam, even give them the hints to exams, or favor their students with higher scores. As a result, the competition for high scores becomes so intense thatit actually affects our education results.WeekendWeekends are important. They provide people with the kind of rest and relaxation that are essential to a happy and healthy life. I’m one of those who know how to enjoy their leisure on the weekend. A good sleep at Saturday night usually helps me to recover from the hard labor of the week. A delight Sunday trip to the suburbs makes me fresh and free from any tension. If I stay at home, I usually do some light reading or practice Chinese calligraphy ---- a traditional writing skill which has an extraordinary calming effect. Sometimes mother invites me to help her cook and I am always happy to accept her invitation.A good rest on the weekend always makes me feel happy, energetic, confident and ready to all the hard work ahead of me. You cannot work happily and efficiently until you learn how to rest and relax on the weekend. My View on Job-HoppingSome people tend to stick to their positions all the time, as they think the longer one works in a particular field, the more skillful one will be at it. Some have been teachers all their lives. Some devote their life energy to scientific research. Such people love their work and turn out to be specialists in their own field. They are usually high achievers. Some are different. They are in the habit of job-hopping, for they always pursue (follow) what is new and stimulating (interesting). They never seem content with their present situation. Some like to meet morepeople, make more money and new acquaintances, so they hop from job to job.As far as I am concerned, I want to be professionally strong. I am not in favor of constant job-hopping, as the saying goes “Jack of all trades, master of none”. But I want to cooperate and comm unicate with someone else so as to be more creative and less partial.Attending College at One’s Own ExpenseNowadays, colleges and universities tend to accept more and more candidates with a score close to the required by charging a portion of their tuition. Moreover, the percentage of the students attending college this way will be increasing year by year.Owing to this practice, college candidates have much freedom in choosing the major they mostly interested in. In addition, those who did not perform well on the College Entrance Exam are able to attend college to have further studies. It is reported that most of these students work harder than their classmates. Certainly this practice has some disadvantages. For example, those candidates who cannot afford the tuition might have fewer opportunities to receive higher education. In my opinion, the advantages of this practice weigh more than its disadvantages. So I am in favor of it and I believe people will be more willing to accept it as time goes by.School-aged Children Drop OutIt’s reported that in China about one million school-aged children drop out of school each year and 80% of the drop-outs are from thefamilies which are too poor to keep their children at school. To tackle the problem, the government has launched the Hope Project. It has helped thousands of children go back to school. But in my opinion, this is far from enough. In order to change this situation completely, the government should set aside an adequate amount of money for education, especially for elementary education. And also, the government should establish laws to ensure that no children should drop out of school as elementary school education is compulsory in China, and local governments should aid the poor families so that they can send their children to school. To sum up, so long as our central and local governments and the whole society pay enough attention to this problem and take effective action, this situation will be changed.Knowledge and PowerKnowledge and power are the two things most desired by man. There is close connection between these two things. The man, having done his best in acquiring knowledge, will easily get a high position and perform it successfully.Power depends on knowledge. Knowledge to power is just like a compass to a ship, by which her sailing is made safely across an unknown ocean. A great statesman or a learned scholar can render (give) his good services to his country just because he has perfect and profound knowledge.Power only follows knowledge. A man cannot do anything well unless he has some information as how to do it well. A man will sometimes lose hisway in a strange land; an apprentice cannot produce any delicate work. Why are these so? Because they are in want of knowledge. If the apprentice wishes to produce good work, he must pay attention to his instructor’s advice. We are all the future masters of our country. Our country needs our services. How can we fulfill our future tasks? To get more knowledge is the only answer.BreakfastWe get the energy for our movements from food. Human beings are just like machines. For us to work properly, we must be well energized. The energy, of course, comes from the three meals a day, that is, breakfast, lunch and dinner.Breakfast is more important than any other meal in a day. For one thing, after a night’s sleep, most of the energy stored in the human body has been consumed. Breakfast serves the purpose of replenishing (fill up again) energy, thus making us energetic again. For another, in the course of a day, morning is the period of time in which we work with most efficiency. Without breakfast, the efficiency would be lost. Finally, the constant lack of breakfast can contribute to stomach troubles. Therefore, to keep fit, we must have breakfast every day. It can be a cup of mild with some bread, or a bowl of porridge with some steamed bread, or anything else of the similar kind. Anyway, we must eat our fill (eat as much as we can), because a good breakfast can not only ensure our good health but also make a good beginning for a new day.Ability and Gook LooksOld people usually tell the young, “Don’t judge a person by his appearance.” Meaning ability is more important than appearance. Indeed, we’ve seen so many brilliant but not at all good-looking people. In the film Mozart, an opera singer reiterates (repeat) this view by saying, “For a woman of taste, it is not the looks, but the talent that interests me.” For her, the preference shows one’s taste. However, nowadays, with more and more interviewers putting much emphasis on the looks, the appearance of the job-applicants, a lot of people come to the conclusion that appearance is more important than ability because many beautiful girls acquire very good positions although they don’t have much talent. In my opinion, ability is definitely much more important than good looks, because it demonstrates one’s own self-cultivation. It bespeaks (show) the efforts and the glory of acquiring something through one’s hard work whereas a good look bespeaks no struggle of the individual. Good looks are pleasant, but I like the ability because it really shows something of my own self.Life Is StruggleEverything in the world is in constant struggle. Struggle is in a sense of the competition in natural selection among organisms.Animals and plants struggle for their existence. Nature provides them with weapons for that struggle. Lions have claws; fish have scales; roses have thorns. They use these weapons for the unavoidable war of existence.Nature also orders us to struggle; when we obey the nature, we win our existence. The result of struggle is the evolution of a better society. In order to surpass the others, one has to devote himself to what he does. If every individual does so, the society will make progress.Struggle is inevitable. But we should struggle with sportsmanship, not to stand in the way of others in order to achieve our own success. It is only by struggling in such a way, mankind will see a world getting more glorious day by day.Can Computer WordStr Human BrainComputers are working faster than human brain. But is it possible that some day the computer will WordStr human brain and control the human being? It is quite impossible. Computers are designed and developed by human brain. They are used to speed up the calculation. Computers are working according to the orders designed by human being. The running of computer is a group of integrated circuit run by a set of programmes. Without programmes, the computers will not know what to do.It is true people are relying more and more on computers. If people don’t know how to control computers, they may be WordStrd by computers and lose their jobs.SuccessSuccess is a lousy (very bad) teacher. It seduces (tempt) smart people into thinking they can’t lose. And it’s an unreliable guide tothe future. What seems the perfect business plan or latest technology today may soon be out-of-date.Usually winning lottery (彩票) is thought to be one’s luck. Many people like to try their luck. One of the lottery’s new millionaire s gave an interview on television. When he was asked by the reporter how he had picked his winning numbers, he said that while “two of the six numbers he just pulled for no particular reason.” As for the other four numbe rs, he used family birth dates. “ So, you see,” he boasted(自夸), “Winning the lottery is not all just luck.”The Car and PollutionMost Americans would find it hard to think what life would look like without a car. However, some have realized the serious problem of the air pollution caused by the car. The polluted air becomes poisonous and dangerous to health. One way to get rid of the polluted air is to build a car that does not pollute. That’s what several of the large factories have been trying to do. But to build a clean car is easier said than done. Progress in this field has been slow.Another way is to take the place of the car engine by something. Now inventors are working on steam cars as well as electric cars. Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a useful model that pleases men.To prevent the world from being polluted by cars, we make somechanges in the way many of us live. Americans, for example, have to reduce the number of their total cars. They are encouraged to travel and to work by bicycle. It is thought to help man to keep the air clean. But this change does not come easily. A large number of workers might find themselves without jobs if a car factory closed. Thus the problem of air pollution would become less important than that of unemployment.Although cars have led us to better life, they have also brought us new problems.。
《罗斯福:四项自由》英语演讲稿在当今社会的重要意义
《罗斯福:四项自由》英语演讲稿在当今社会的重要意义Ladies and Gentlemen,It gives me immense pleasure to address you all on the topic "The Importance of Roosevelt's Four Freedoms in Today's Society." The Four Freedoms were outlined by the 32nd President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, back in 1941, and they have stood the test of time to become an integral part of democratic ideology in modern times. They include freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear, and they are as relevant today as they were almost eighty years ago.Freedom of speech is the most fundamental right that we have as human beings; it is enshrined in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and it is an essential component of any democratic society. People must be able to express their opinions without fear of retribution, and they must be able to criticize their government without fear of persecution. The internet has provided us with new and innovative ways to communicate, and it is essential that we use it to enhance our freedom of speech. The freedom of worship is another important right that Roosevelt outlined in his Four Freedoms speech. Today, it is as vital as it was back then. People must be allowed to practice their faith without fear of discrimination or persecution, and we must embrace diversity and tolerance in society. Religious freedom is not just the freedom topractice one's own religion but also the right to not have a particular religion imposed on individuals.Freedom from want is something that every human being deserves. In today's world, however, want has taken on a new meaning. People are no longer just hungry for food; they are hungry for opportunities, equality, and security. The current pandemic has exposed the inadequacies of our global health and economic systems, and it is now more important than ever that we work towards providing better access to education, healthcare, and job opportunities.Lastly, freedom from fear is perhaps the most critical freedom of all. People should not have to live in fear of violence, terrorism or war. In today's society, however, with the ever-increasing incidence of hate crimes, cyberbullying, and social injustice, it is more important than ever that we work towards building safer communities and societies. In conclusion, Roosevelt's Four Freedoms are as crucial today as they were in 1941. The world has changed significantly since then, but the principles of freedom and democracy are timeless. If we are to build a society that is inclusive, tolerant, and just, then we must embrace these freedoms and work towards their continued promotion and protection. Thank you.。
自由者英文作文高中
自由者英文作文高中英文:As a free spirit, I believe in living life on my own terms. I don't like to be tied down by rules and restrictions, and I value my independence above all else. For me, freedom means the ability to make my own choices and to pursue my own passions without interference from others.Of course, this doesn't mean that I don't have responsibilities or obligations. I understand that I have to work hard and be responsible in order to achieve my goals. But I also believe that I should be able to do so in my own way, without being forced to conform to someoneelse's expectations. For example, when I was in college, I decided to take a year off to travel and explore the world. Some people thought I was crazy for doing this, but I knew it was theright choice for me. During that year, I learned more about myself and the world than I ever could have in a classroom. In the end, being a free spirit is about living life to the fullest and not being afraid to take risks. It's about following your heart and doing what makes you happy, evenif it goes against the norm. And while it's not always easy, it's definitely worth it.中文:作为一个自由者,我相信要按照自己的方式生活。

罗斯福四项自由英语演讲稿
罗斯福四项自由英语演讲稿Ladies and gentlemen,I am honored to speak to you today about a topic very dear to me –the four freedoms that are essential to a free and democratic society. These freedoms, which were articulated by the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt in his famous speech on January 6, 1941, have served as an inspiration to generations of Americans and people all over the world. Today, I would like to share with you my thoughts on each of these four freedoms.First and foremost, there is freedom of speech. This freedom is vital to the functioning of a democratic society. When individuals are free to speak their minds, they can hold those in power accountable and bring about change. But freedom of speech is not just about criticizing those in power. It is also about allowing different voices to be heard, even if they are unpopular or controversial. We must always remember that our freedom to speak does not give us the right to harm others, and we must respect the rights and dignity of others even as we express our own views.Secondly, there is freedom of worship. This freedom ensures that all individuals are able to worship as they see fit, without fear of persecution or discrimination. It is a fundamental human right that must be protected. In a diverse society such as ours, it is important that we respect the religious beliefs of others, and that we remain committed to the idea that all individuals have the right to practice their faith without interference from the state.Thirdly, there is freedom from want. This freedom recognizes that all individuals should have access to the basic necessities of life –food, shelter, healthcare, and education. It is not enough to simply protect individuals from harm; we must also work to create a society that provides opportunities for all. This means creating policies and systems that address poverty, inequality, and social exclusion. Only then can we truly say that we are a society that values freedom and social justice. Finally, there is freedom from fear. This freedom recognizes that all individuals have the right to live without fear of violence, persecution or oppression. It requires that we work to promote peace and security, both at home and abroad. It means fighting against racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of discrimination. We must also work to ensure that our legal systems are fair and just, and that they protect the rights of all individuals, regardless of their race, gender, or socio-economic status. In conclusion, the four freedoms articulated by President Roosevelt remind us that our freedom is not just about individual rights, but also about the collective responsibilities that we share as citizens of a free and democratic society. We must work to build a society that values these freedoms and that seeks to protect them for all individuals, regardless of their race, gender, or socio-economic status. Only then can we truly say that we are a country that values freedom, justice, and equality for all. Thank you.。

高中英语 50篇经典英文演讲素材 10 Franklin D. Roosevelt:The Four Freedoms
Franklin D. Roosevelt: The Four FreedomsMr. Speaker, members of the 77th Congress:I address you, the members of this new Congress, at a moment unprecedented in the history of the union. I use the word “unprecedented” because at no previous time has American security been as seriously threatened from without as it is today.Since the permanent formation of our government under the Constitution in 1789, most of the periods of crisis in our history have related to our domestic affairs. And, fortunately, only one of these—the four-year war between the States—ever threatened our national unity. Today, thank God, 130,000,000 Americans in forty-eight States have forgotten points of the compass in our national unity. It is true that prior to 1914 the United States often has been disturbed by events in other continents. We have even engaged in two wars with European nations and in a number of undeclared wars in the West Indies, in the Mediterranean and in the Pacific, for the maintenance of American rights and for the Principles of peaceful commerce. But in no case has a serious threat been raised against our national safety or our continued independence. What I seek to convey is the historic truth that the United States as a nation has at all times maintained opposition—clear, definite opposition—to any attempt to lock us in behind an ancient Chinese wall while the procession of civilization went past. Today, thinking of our children and of their children, we oppose enforced isolation for ourselves or for any other part of the Americas. That determination of ours, extending over all these years, was proved, for example, in the early days during the quarter century of wars following the French Revolution. While the Napoleonic struggle did threaten interests of the United States because of the French foothold in the West Indies and in Louisiana, and while we engaged in the War of 1812 to vindicate our right to peaceful trade, it is nevertheless clear that neither France nor Great Britain nor any other nation was aiming at domination of the whole world. And in like fashion, from 1815 to 1914—ninety-nine years—no single war in Europe or in Asia constituted a real threat against our future or against the future of any other American nation.Except in the Maximilian interlude in Mexico, no foreign power sought to establish itself in this hemisphere. And friendly strength; it is still a friendly strength.Even when the World War broke out in 1914 it seemed to contain only small threat of danger to our own American future. But as time went on, as we remember, theAmerican people began to visualize what the downfall of democratic nations might mean to our own democracy. We need not overemphasize imperfections in the peace of Versailles. We need not harp on failure of the democracies to deal with problems of world reconstruction. We should remember that the peace of 1919 was far less unjust than the kind of pacification which began even before Munich, and which is being carried on under the new order of tyranny that seeks to spread over every continent today. The American people have unalterably set their faces against that tyranny.I suppose that every realist knows that the democratic way of life is at this moment being directly assailed in every part of the world—assailed either by arms or by secret spreading of poisonous propaganda by those who seek to destroy unity and promote discord in nations that are still at peace.During sixteen long months this assault has blotted out the whole pattern of democratic life in an appalling number of independent nations, great and small. And the assailants are still on the march, threatening other nations, great and small. Therefore, as your President, performing my constitutional duty to “give to the Congress information of the sta te of the union,” I find it unhappily necessary to report that the future and the safety of our country and of our democracy are overwhelmingly involved in events far beyond our borders.Armed defense of democratic existence is now being gallantly waged in four continents. If that defense fails, all the population and all the resources of Europe and Asia, Africa and Australia will be dominated by conquerors. And let us remember that the total of those populations in those four continents, the total of those populations and their resources greatly exceeds the sum total of the population and the resources of the whole of the Western Hemisphere—yes, many times over.In times like these it is immature—and, incidentally, untrue—for anybody to brag that an unprepared America, single-handed and with one hand tied behind its back, can hold off the whole world. No realistic American can expect from a dictator’s peace international generosity, or return of true independence, or world disarmament, or freedom of expression, or freedom of religion—or even good business. Such a peace would bring no security for us or for our neighbors. Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. As a nation we may take pride in the fact that we are soft-hearted; but we cannotafford to be soft-headed. We must always be wary of those who with sounding brass and a tinkling cymbal preach the ism of appeasement. We must especially beware of that small group of selfish men who would clip the wings of the American eagle in order to feather their own nests.I have recently pointed out how quickly the tempo of modern warfare could bring into our very midst the physical attack which we must eventually expect if the dictator nation win this war. There is much loose talk of our immunity from immediate and direct invasion from across the seas. Obviously, as long as the British Navy retains its power, no such danger exists. Even if there were no British Navy, it is not probable that any enemy would be stupid enough to attack us by landing troops in the United States from across thousands of miles of ocean, until it had acquired strategic bases from which to operate. But we learn much from the lessons of the past years in Europe—particularly the lesson of Norway, whose essential seaports were captured by treachery and surprise built up over a series of years. The first phase of the invasion of this hemisphere would not be the landing of regular troops. The necessary strategic points would be occupied by secret agents and by their dupes—and great numbers of them are already here and in Latin America. As long as the aggressor nations maintain the offensive they, not we, will choose the time and the place and the method of their attack. And that is why the future of all the American Republics is today in serious danger. That is why this annual message to the Congress is unique in our history. That is why every member of the executive branch of the government and every member of the Congress face great responsibility—great accountability. The need of the moment is that our actions and our policy should be devoted primarily—almost exclusively—to meeting this foreign peril. For all our domestic problems are now a part of the great emergency.Just as our national policy in internal affairs has been based upon a decent respect for the rights and dignity of all our fellow men within our gates, so our national policy in foreign affairs has been based on a decent respect for the rights and the dignity of all nations, large and small. And the justice of morality must and will win in the end.Our national policy is this:First, by an impressive expression of the public will and without regard topartisanship, we are committed to all-inclusive national defense.Second, by an impressive expression of the public will and without regard to partisanship, we are committed to full support of all those resolute people everywhere who are resisting aggression and are thereby keeping war away from our hemisphere. By this support we express our determination that the democratic cause shall prevail, and we strengthen the defense and the security of our own nation.Third, by an impressive expression of the public will and without regard to partisanship, we are committed to the proposition that principle of morality and considerations for our own security will never permit us to acquiesce in a peace dictated by aggressors and sponsored by appeasers. We know that enduring peace cannot be bought at the cost of other people's freedom. In the recent national election there was no substantial difference between the two great parties in respect to that national policy. No issue was fought out on the line before the American electorate. And today it is abundantly evident that American citizens everywhere are demanding and supporting speedy and complete action in recognition of obvious danger. Therefore, the immediate need is a swift and driving increase in our armament production. Leaders of industry and labor have responded to our summons. Goals of speed have been set. In some cases these goals are being reached ahead of time. In some cases we are on schedule; in other cases there are slight but not serious delays. And in some cases—and, I am sorry to say, very important cases -- we are all concerned by the slowness of the accomplishment of our plans. The Army and Navy, however, have made substantial progress during the past year. Actual experience is improving and speeding up our methods of production with every passing day. And today's best is not good enough for tomorrow.I am not satisfied with the progress thus far made. The men in charge of the program represent the best in training, in ability and in patriotism. They are not satisfied with the progress thus far made. None of us will be satisfied until the job is done.No matter whether the original goal was set too high or too low, our objective is quicker and better results. To give you two illustrations:We are behind schedule in turning out finished airplanes. We are working day and night to solve the innumerable problems and to catch up.We are ahead of schedule in building warships, but we are working to get even further ahead of that schedule. To change a whole nation from a basis of peacetime production of implements of peace to a basis of wartime production of implements of war is no small task. The greatest difficulty comes at the beginning of the program, when new tools, and new plant facilities, new assembly lines, new shipways must first be constructed before the actual material begins to flow steadily and speedily from them. The Congress of course, must rightly keep itself informed at all times of the progress of the program. However, there is certain information, as the Congress itself will readily recognize, which, in the interests of our own security and those of the nations that we are supporting, must of needs be kept in confidence.New circumstances are constantly begetting new needs for our safety. I shall ask this Congress for greatly increased new appropriations and authorizations to carry on what we have begun.I also ask this Congress for authority and for funds sufficient to manufacture additional munitions and war supplies of many kinds, to be turned over to those nations which are now in actual war with aggressor nations. Our most useful and immediate role is to act as an arsenal for them as well as for ourselves. They do not need manpower, but they do need billions of dollars’ worth of the weapons of defense. The time is near when they will not be able to pay for them all in ready cash. We cannot, and we will not, tell them that they must surrender merely because of present inability to pay for the weapons which we know they must have.I do not recommend that we make them a loan of dollars with which to pay for these weapons -- a loan to be repaid in dollars. I recommend that we make it possible for those nations to continue to obtain war materials in the United States, fitting their orders into our own program. And nearly all of their material would, if the time ever came, be useful in our own defense.Taking counsel of expert military and naval authorities, considering what is best for our own security, we are free to decide how much should be kept here and how much should be sent abroad to our friends who, by their determined and heroic resistance, are giving us time in which to make ready our own defense. For what we send abroad we shall be repaid, repaid within a reasonable time following the close of hostilities, repaid in similar materials, or at our option in other goods of many kinds which they can produce and which we need.Let us say to the democracies: "We Americans are vitally concerned in your defenseof freedom. We are putting forth our energies, our resources, and our organizing powers to give you the strength to regain and maintain a free world. We shall send you in ever-increasing numbers, ships, planes, tanks, guns. This is our purpose and our pledge."In fulfillment of this purpose we will not be intimidated by the threats of dictators that they will regard as a breach of international law or as an act of war our aid to the democracies which dare to resist their aggression. Such aid is not an act of war, even if a dictator should unilaterally proclaim it so to be.And when the dictators—if the dictators--are ready to make war upon us, they will not wait for an act of war on our part. They did not wait for Norway or Belgium or the Netherlands to commit an act of war. Their only interest is in a new one-way international law, which lacks mutuality in its observance and therefore becomes an instrument of oppression. The happiness of future generations of Americans may well depend on how effective and how immediate we can make our aid felt. No one can tell the exact character of the emergency situations that we may be called upon to meet. The nation's hands must not be tied when the nation's life is in danger.Yes, and we must prepare, all of us prepare, to make the sacrifices that the emergency—almost as serious as war itself--demands. Whatever stands in the way of speed and efficiency in defense, in defense preparations at any time, must give way to the national need.A free nation has the right to expect full cooperation from all groups. A free nation has the right to look to the leaders of business, of labor and of agriculture to take the lead in stimulating effort, not among other groups but within their own groups. The best way of dealing with the few slackers or trouble-makers in our midst is, first, to shame them by patriotic example, and if that fails, to use the sovereignty of government to save government. As men do not live by bread alone, they do not fight by armaments alone. Those who man our defenses and those behind them who build our defenses must have the stamina and the courage which come from an unshakable belief in the manner of life which they are defending. The mighty action that we are calling for cannot be based on a disregard of all the things worth fighting for.The nation takes great satisfaction and much strength from the things which have been done to make its people conscious of their individual stake in the preservation of democratic life in America. Those things have toughened the fiber of our people, have renewed their faith and strengthened their devotion to the institutions we makeready to protect.Certainly this is no time for any of us to stop thinking about the social and economic problems which are the root cause of the social revolution which is today a supreme factor in the world. For there is nothing mysterious about the foundations of a healthy and strong democracy. The basic things expected by our people of their political and economic systems are simple. They are:Equality of opportunity for youth and for others.Jobs for those who can work.Security for those who need it.The ending of special privilege for the few.The preservation of civil liberties for all.The enjoyment of the fruits of scientific progress in a wider and constantly rising standard of living. These are the simple, the basic things that must never be lost sight of in the turmoil and unbelievable complexity of our modern world. The inner and abiding straight of our economic and political systems is dependent upon the degree to which they fulfill these expectations. Many subjects connected with our social economy call for immediate improvement. As examples:We should bring more citizens under the coverage of old-age pensions and unemployment insurance. We should widen the opportunities for adequate medical care.We should plan a better system by which persons deserving or needing gainful employment may obtain it.I have called for personal sacrifice, and I am assured of the willingness of almost all Americans to respond to that call. A part of the sacrifice means the payment of more money in taxes. In my budget message I will recommend that a greater portion of this great defense program be paid for from taxation than we are paying for today. No person should try, or be allowed to get rich out of the program, and the principle of tax payments in accordance with ability to pay should be constantly before our eyes to guide our legislation. If the Congress maintains these principles the voters, putting patriotism ahead pocketbooks, will give you their applause. In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms. The first is freedom of speech and expression--everywhere in the world. The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way everywhere in the world. The third is freedom from want, which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants--everywhere in the world. The fourth is freedom from fear, which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor -- anywhere in the world. That is no vision of a distant millennium. It is a definite basis for a kind of world attainable in our own time and generation. That kind of world is the very antithesis of the so-called “new order” of tyranny which the dictators seek t o create with the crash of a bomb.To that new order we oppose the greater conception -- the moral order. A good society is able to face schemes of world domination and foreign revolutions alike without fear.Since the beginning of our American history we have been engaged in change, in a perpetual, peaceful revolution, a revolution which goes on steadily, quietly adjusting itself to changing conditions without the concentration camp or the quicklime in the ditch. The world order which we seek is the cooperation of free countries, working together in a friendly, civilized society. This nation has placed its destiny in the hands, heads and hearts of its millions of free men and women, and its faith in freedom under the guidance of God. Freedom means the supremacy of human rights everywhere. Our support goes to those who struggle to gain those rights and keep them. Our strength is our unity of purpose. To that high concept there can be no end save victory.。

演讲能手罗斯福:四项自由英语演讲稿欣赏演讲能手罗斯福:四项自由英语演讲稿欣赏Franklin D. Roosevelt, commonly referred to as FDR, served as the 32nd President of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945. However, his leadership went beyond just the years he held the presidential office. FDR was also an outstanding orator who used his speaking talents to rally American citizens during times of great crisis, such as the Great Depression and World War II.One of Roosevelt’s most famous speeches is the Four Freedoms speech he delivered to the United States Congress on January 6, 1941. This speech addressed the threat of Nazi Germany and emphasized four essential human freedoms that he believed were necessary for everyone to enjoy, including freedom of speech and religion, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. Roosevelt argued that these freedoms were the basis for a just and peaceful world and that the United States had a responsibility to protect them. Here, we will analyze four key portions of the Four Freedoms speech and examine their relevance and impact on society today.Freedom of SpeechIn his speech, Roosevelt stated, “The first is freedom of speech and expression—everywhere in the world. The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way—everywhere in the world.” These two essential freedoms are critical not only for maintaining democracy but also for promoting creativity and innovation. Freedom of speech allows people to express their opinions and ideas without fear of persecution, censorship, or retaliation. This freedom enables the free exchange of ideas that can lead to progress and development, something that is essential in democratic societies. The ongoing challenges we see today with regard to censorship on social media demonstrate the relevance of this freedom today.Freedom from WantRoosevelt went on to discuss “the third freedom, which, translated into world terms, means economicunderstanding…the right of every nation to develop its resources and markets.” Freedom from want is perhaps the most obvious of the Four Freedoms because it addresses the fundamental need for people to have access to basic necessities such as food, shelter, and clothing. Poverty remains one of the most significant challenges faced by nations around the world. Based on the principles of this freedom, countries must ensure that their citizens have access to essential resources and the opportunity to grow economically.Freedom from FearRoosevelt emphasized “the fourth is freedom from fear, which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor—anywhere in the world.” This freedom recognizes the importance o f peace and security and the need for nations to work together to ensure that all people feel safe in their communities. Even today, we see incidents of violence, including terrorism, conflict, and hostility between countries. Understanding the importanceof freedom from fear and working towards peace is essentialin creating a just and secure global community.ConclusionThroughout his presidency, FDR’s speeches and leadership style were characterized by compassion, empathy, and an unwavering commitment to principles of freedom, justice, and human dignity. The Four Freedoms speech delivered by Roosevelt continues to inspire and challenge us today, as we continue to face new challenges in society. By understanding and appreciating the principles of freedom outlined in this speech, we can work together to build a fair, just, and peaceful global community.。

论四大自由(The Four Freedom)
The Four Freedoms论四大自由I address you, the Members of the Seventy-Seventh Congress, at a moment unprecedented in the history of the Union. I use the word "unprecedented," because at no previous time has American security been as seriously threatened from without as it is today...It is true that prior to 1914 the United States often had been disturbed by events in other Continents. We had even engaged in two wars with European nations and in a number of undeclared wars in the West Indies, in the Mediterranean and in the Pacific for the maintenance of American rights and for the principles of peaceful commerce. In no case, however, had a serious threat been raised against our national safety or our independence. What I seek to convey is the historic truth that the United States as a nation has at all times maintained opposition to any attempt to lock us behind an ancient Chinese wall while the procession of civilization went past. Today, thinking of our children and their children, we oppose enforced isolation for ourselves or for any part of the Americas.Even when the World War broke our in 1914, it seemed to contain only small threat of danger to our own American future. But, as time went on, the American people began to visualize what the downfall of democratic nations might mean to our own democracy. We need not over-emphasize imperfections in the Peace of Versailles. We need not harp on failure of the democracies to deal with problems of world deconstruction. We should remember that the Peace of 1919 was far less unjust than the kind of "pacification" which began even before Munich, and which is being carried on under the new order of tyranny that seeks to spread over every continent today. The American people have unalterably set their faces against that tyranny.Every realist knows that the democratic way of life is at this moment being directly assailed in every part of the world - assailed either by arms, or by secret spreading of poisonous propaganda by those who seek to destroy unity and promote discord in nations still at peace. During sixteen months this assault has blotted out the whole pattern of democratic life in an appalling number of independent nations, great and small. The assailants are still on the march, threatening other nations, great and small. Therefore, as your president, performing my constitutional duty to "give to the Congress information of the state of the Union," I find it necessary to report that the future and safety of our country and of our democracy are overwhelmingly involved in events far beyond our borders.Armed defense of democratic existence is now being gallantly waged on four continents. If that defense fails, all the population and all the resources of Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australasia will be dominated by the conquerors. The total of those populations and their resources greatly exceeds the sum total of the population and resources of the whole of the Western Hemisphere - many times over.In times like these it is immature - and incidentally unture - for anybody to brag that an unprepared America, single-handed, and with one hand tied behind its back, can hold off the whole world. No realistic American can expect from a dictator's peace international generosity, or return of true independence, or world disarmament, or freedom of expression, or freedom of religion - or even good business. Such a peace would bring no security for us or for our neighbors. "Those, who would give up essential liberty to purchase the little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." As a nation we may take pride in the fact that we are soft-hearted; but we cannot afford to be soft-hearted. We must always be wary of those who with sounding brass and the tinkling cymbal preach the "ism" of appeasement. We must especially beware of that small group of selfish men who would clip the wings of the American eagle in order to feather their own nests.I have recently pointed out how quickly the tempo of modern warfare could bring into our very midst the physical attack which we must expect if the dictator nations win this war. There is much loose talk of our immunity from immediate and direct invasion from across the seas. 罗斯福英语演讲稿:四项自由
罗斯福英语演讲稿:四项自由Ladies and gentlemen,Today, I stand before you to talk about an idea that is at the very core of America's values and beliefs – the Four Freedoms. These freedoms were first articulated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in his 1941 State of the Union address, at a time when America and the world were in the midst of an unprecedented crisis. The Four Freedoms are: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. These freedoms represent the basic rights and values that every human being should enjoy and have the opportunity to pursue. Let me explain each of these freedoms in turn.Firstly, freedom of speech. This is a fundamental right that ensures that every individual has the right to express their thoughts, opinions, and beliefs without fear of retribution or persecution. It is the foundation of democracy and the cornerstone of a free and open society. Without freedom of speech, there can be no critical thinking, no progress, and no dialogue.Secondly, freedom of worship. Religious freedom is a right that allows individuals to practice their own religion, or none at all, without fear of persecution or discrimination. It is a fundamental human right that is essential to the wellbeing of individuals and communities alike. Without religious freedom, people cannot express or practice their beliefs openly, and society will be divided by religious barriers.Thirdly, freedom from want. This is the right to live a life free from poverty, squalor, and deprivation. It is a right that ensures every person can have access to basic life necessities such as food, housing, and healthcare. Freedom from want is essential to human dignity and well-being, without it, we cannot live a fulfilling life.Lastly, freedom from fear. This is the right to live in peace and security without fear of violence or aggression. It is a right that everyone should enjoy, but in many parts of the world, it is a right that is not guaranteed. Freedom from fear protects our basic human rights and allows us to live in an environment conducive to growth and prosperity. These four freedoms are not just American values, they are universal values that everyone should be entitled to. As President, I pledge to uphold these values both at home and abroad. 英文Freedom作文
英文Freedom作文Freedom is like a wild horse, running free in the open fields, untamed and unrestricted. It is the feeling of liberation, of breaking free from the chains of conformity and expectation. In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we often forget the importance of freedom. We get caught up in our routines, our responsibilities, and our obligations. But true freedom lies in the ability to choose, to make decisions without fear of judgment or consequence.Freedom is the wind in your hair as you drive with no destination in mind, the feeling of weightlessness as you jump into a pool on a hot summer day. It is the ability to speak your mind, to express yourself without reservation or hesitation.Freedom is the ability to be yourself, unapologetically and unabashedly. It is the courage to stand up for what youbelieve in, to fight for justice and equality. It is the power to create change, to make a difference in the world. In a world filled with rules and regulations, freedom is like a breath of fresh air. It is the opportunity to explore, to discover new things, to push the boundaries of what is possible. It is the chance to dream, to imagine a world where anything is possible.Freedom is a precious gift that should never be taken for granted. It is a right that should be cherished and protected at all costs. So let us embrace our freedom, let us celebrate it and let us never forget the power that comes with being truly free.。

适合高中生背诵的经典英语短文
The Force of Habits之马矢奏春创作Habits, whether good or bad, are gradually formed. One’s soul will expand if one devotes oneself to a noble cause. On Test and Test TakingThe purpose of a test is to check how much we students have learned abouta subject. Although ever yone wants to succeed in what he tries, sometimes failure can’t be avoided.Different people hold different attitudes towards failure. When faced with it, some can stand up to it, draw a useful lesson from it and try their best to fulfill what they are determined to do. Others, however, lose heartand give in. Those who spend most of their time in the open air and have constant muscular employment, should adopt reading or some other quiet forms of recreation. Persons who sit much at their business should take a kind of recreation that will supply their muscles with exercise.Recreation provides people with the kind of rest and relaxation. It makes people feel happy, energetic and confident, meanwhile it prepares people to do much better than ever in their daily work.On Today’s EducationI think one of the main problems with today’s education is that too muchemphasis is placed on test score. As a result, the competition for high scores becomes so intense that it actually affects our education results.WeekendWeekends are important. If I stay at home, I usually do some light reading or practice Chinesecalligraphy ---- a traditional writing skill which has an extraordinary calming effect. Some like to meet more people, make more money and new acquaintances, so they hop from job to job.As far as I am concerned, I want to be professionally strong. Moreover, the percentage of the students attending college this waywill be increasing year by year.Owing to this practice, college candidates have much freedom in choosing the major they mostly interested in. So I am in favor of it and I believe people will be more willing to accept it as time goes by.School-aged Children Drop OutIt’s reported that in China about one million school-aged children drop out of school each year and 80% of the drop-outs are from the families which are too poor to keep their children at school. To sum up, so long as our central and local governments and the wholesociety pay enough attention to this problem and take effective action, this situation will be changed.Knowledge and PowerKnowledge and power are the two things most desired by man. A man will sometimes lose his way in a strange land; an apprentice cannot produce any delicate work. For one thing, after a night’s sleep, most of the energy stored in the human body has beenconsumed. It bespeaks (show) theefforts and the glory of acquiring something through one’s hard work whereas a good look bespeaks no struggle of the individual. They use these weapons for the unavoidable war of existence. Nature also orders us to struggle; when we obey the nature, we win our existence. And it’s an unreliable guide to the future. What seems the perfect business plan or latest technology today may soon be out-of-date.Usually winning lottery (彩票) is thought to be one’s luck. Many people like to try their luck. One of the lottery’s new millionaire s gave an interview on television. When he was asked by the reporter how he had picked his winning numbers, he said that while “two of the six numbers he just pulled for no particular reason.” As for the other four numbers, he used family birth dates. Progress in this field hasbeen slow.Another way is to take the place of the car engine by something. Now inventors are working on steam cars as well as electric cars. Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a useful model that pleases men.To prevent the world from being polluted by cars, we make some changes in the way many of us live.

高中生必备英语美文背诵:The Four
Freedoms
The Four Freedoms
In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms.
我们力求安定的未来日子里,我们期待一个以人类四大基本自由为基础的世界。
The first is freedom of speech and expression -- everywhere in the world.
第一是在全世界任何地方发表言论和表达意见的自由。
The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way everywhere in the world.
第二是在全世界任何地方,人人有以自己的方式来崇拜上帝的自由。
The third is freedom from want, which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants -- everywhere in the world.
第三是不虞匮乏的自由--这种自由,就世界范围来讲,就是一种经济上的融洽关系,它将保证全世界每一个国
家的居民都过健全的、和平时期的生活。
The fourth is freedom from fear, which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor -- anywhere in the world.
第四是免除恐惧的自由--这种自由,就世界范围来讲,就是世界性的裁减军备,要以一种彻底的方法把它裁减到这样的程度:务使世界上没有一个国家有能力向全世界任何地区的任何邻国进行武力侵略。
That is no vision of a distant millennium. It is a definite basis for a kind of world attainable in our own time and generation. That kind of world is the very antithesis of the so-called “new order” of tyranny which the dictators seek to create with the crash of a bomb.
这绝不是对遥远未来的幻想。
在我们这个时代,我们这代人就可以在这一实实在在的基础之上,建立起一个新的世界。
这个世界是与独裁者们想用炸弹炸出来的所谓暴政新秩序截然相反的。
Since the beginning of our American history we have been engaged in change, in a perpetual, peaceful revolution, a revolution which goes on steadily, quietly, adjusting itself to
changing conditions without the concentration camp or the quicklime in the ditch. The world order which we seek is the cooperation of free countries, working together in a friendly, civilized society.
This nation has placed its destiny in the hands and heads and hearts of its millions of free men and women, and its faith in freedom under the guidance of God. Freedom means the supremacy of human rights everywhere. Our support goes to those who struggle to gain those rights and keep them. Our strength is our unity of purpose.
To that high concept there can be no end save victory.
为了实现这一崇高的信念,我们不获全胜,绝不罢休。
