But does one plastic straw or cup really make a difference? Artist Benjamin Von Wong wants you to know that it does. He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, foreign viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products. At the beginning of the year, the artist built a piece called“Strawpocalypse,” a pair of 10-foot-tall plastic waves, frozen mid-crash. Made of 168,000 plastic straws collected from several volunteer beach cleanups, the sculpture made its first appearance at the Estella Place shopping center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled. Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source (来源)of plastic pollution, but they’ve recently come under fire because most people don’t need them to drink with and, because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled. Every straw that' s part of Von Wong's artwork likely came from a drink that someone used for only a few minutes. Once the drink is gone, the straw will take centuries to disappear. In a piece from 2018, Von Wong wanted to illustrate (说明) a specific statistic: Every 60 seconds, a truckload's worth of plastic enters the ocean. For this work, titled "Truckload of Plastic, "Von Wong and a group of volunteers collected more than 10,000 pieces of plastic, which were then tied together to look like they’d been dumped(倾倒)from a truck all at once.Von Wong hopes that his work will also help pressure big companies to reduce their plastic footprint.35. What are Von Wong’s artworks intended for? [单选题] *A. Beautifying the city he lives in.B. Introducing eco-friendly products.C. Drawing public attention to plastic waste.(正确答案)D. Reducing garbage on the beach.36. Why does the author discuss plastic straws in paragraph 3? [单选题] *A. To show the difficulty of their recycling.(正确答案)B. To explain why they are useful.C. To voice his views on modern art.D. To find a substitute for them.37. What effect would "Truckload of Plastic" have on viewers? [单选题] *A. Calming.B. Disturbing(正确答案)C RefreshingD. Challenging.38. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? [单选题] *A. Artists' Opinions on Plastic SafetyB. Media Interest in Contemporary ArtC. Responsibility Demanded of Big CompaniesD. Ocean Plastics Transformed into Sculptures(正确答案)BDuring an interview for one of my books, my interviewer said something I still think about often. Annoyed by the level of distraction(干扰)in his open office, he said, “That’s why I have a membership at the co working space across the street —so I can focus. "His comment struck me as strange. After all, co working spaces also typically use an open office layout (布局). But I recently came across a study that shows why his approach worksThe researchers examined various levels of noise on participants as they completed tests of creative thinking. They were randomly divided into four groups and exposed to various noise levels in the background, from total silence to 50 decibels(分贝),70 decibels, and 85 decibels. The differences between most of the groups were statistically insignificant; however, the participants in the 70 decibels group—those exposed to a level of noise similar to background chatter in a coffee shop-significantly outperformed the other groups. Since the effects were small, this may suggest that our creative thinking does not differ that much in response to total silence and 85 decibels of background noise. But since the results at 70 decibels were significant, the study also suggests that the right level of background noise—not too loud and not total silence—may actually improve one’s creative thinking ability. The right level of background noise mayinterrupt our normal patterns of thinking just enough to allow our imaginations to wander, without making it impossible to focus. This kind of "distracted focus" appears to be the best state for working on creative tasks. So why do so many of us hate our open offices? The problem may be that, in our offices, we can't stop ourselves from getting drawn into others’ conversations while we’re trying to focus. Indeed, the researchers found that face-to-face interactions and conversations affect the creative process, and yet a co working space or a coffee shop provides a certain level of noise while also providing freedom from interruptions.39. Why does the interviewer prefer a co working space? [单选题] *A. It helps him concentrate.(正确答案)B. It blocks out background noise.C. It has a pleasant atmosphere.D. It encourages face-to-face interactions.40. Which level of background noise may promote creative thinking ability? [单选题] *A. Total silence.B. 50 decibels.C. 70 decibels.(正确答案)D. 85 decibels.41. What makes an open office unwelcome to many people? [单选题] *A. Personal privacy unprotected.B. Limited working space.C. Restrictions on group discussion.D. Constant interruptions.(正确答案)42.What can we infer about the author from the text? [单选题] *A. He's a news reporter.B. He’s on office manager.C. He's a professional designer.D. He's a published writer.(正确答案)CWhen you were trying to figure out what to buy for the environmentalist on your holiday list, fur probably didn’t cross your mind. But some ecologists and fashion (时装)enthusiasts are trying to bring back the market for fur made from nutria(海狸鼠).Unusual fashion shows in New Orleans and Brooklyn have showcased nutria fur made into clothes in different styles. “It sounds crazy to talk about guilt-free fur-unless you understand that the nutria are destroying vast wetlands every year”, says Cree McCree, project director of Righteous Fur.Scientists in Louisiana were so concerned that they decided to pay hunters $5 a tail. Some of the fur ends up in the fashion shows like the one in Brooklyn last month.Nutria were brought there from Argentina by fur farmers and let go into the wild. “The ecosystem down there can’t handle this non-native species(物种).It’s destroying the environment. It’s them or us.” says Michael Massimi, an expert in this field. The fur trade kept nutria in check for decades, but when the market for nutria collapsed in the late 1980s,the cat-sized animals multiplied like crazy.Biologist Edmond Mouton runs the nutria control program for Louisiana. He says it’s not easy to convince people that nutria fur is green, but he has no doubt about it. Hunters bring in more than 300,000 nutria tails a year, so part of Mouton’s job these days is trying to promote fur. Then there’s Righteous Fur and its unusual fashion. Model Paige Morgan says,”To give people a guilt-free option that they can wear without someone throwing paint on them-1 think that’s going to be a massive thing, at least here in New York.” Designer Jennifer Anderson admits it took her a while to come around to the opinion that using nutria fur for her creations is morally acceptable. She trying to come up with a label to attach to nutria fashions to show it is eco-friendly.43. What is the purpose of the fashion shows in New Orleans and Brooklyn? [单选题] *A. To promote guilt-free fur.(正确答案)B. To expand the fashion market.C. To introduce a new brand.D. To celebrate a winter holiday.44. Why are scientists concerned about nutria? [单选题] *A. I have for as long as I can remember. I was always an enthusiastic reader, sometimes reading up to three books a day as a child. Stories were like air to me and while other kids played ball or went to parties, I lived out adventures through the books I checked out from the library. My first job was working at the Ukiah Library when I was 16 years old .It was a dream job and I did everything from shelving books to reading to the children for story time.As I grew older and became a mother, the library took on a new place and an added meaning in my life. I had several children and books were our main source(来源) of entertainment. It was a big deal for us to load up and go to the local library, where my kids could pick out books to read or books they wanted me to read to them.I always read ,using different voices ,as though I were acting out the stories with my voice and they loved it !It was a special time to bond with my children and it filled themwith the wonderment of books .Now, I see my children taking their children to the library and I love that the excitement of going to the library lives on form generation to generation. As a novelist, I’ve found a new relationship with libraries. I encourage readers to go to their local library when they can’t afford to purchase a book. I see libraries as a safe haven(避风港) for readers and writers, a bridge that helps put together a reader with a book. Libraries, in their own way, help fight book piracy(盗版行为) and 1 think all writers should support libraries in a significant way when they can. Encourage readers to use the library. I often imagine my old life. In a way I am expecting it. I don’t think being old is a horrible thing. Instead, I feel my life in old age can be as interesting and colorful as now, if not better. Especially after retirement, I would have more free time and less pressure so that I could pursue my hobbies freely. I needn’t care about the busy study and hard work of the youth. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the AnswerSheet with a single line through the center.Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage: AEvery artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public .Not only does he want to say it well ,but he wantsit to be something which has not been said before .He hopes the public will listen and understand —he wants to teach them, and he wants them to lean from him .What visional artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain ,because painters translate their experience into shapes and colors, not words .They seem to feel that feel certain selectionof shapes and colors ,out of the countless billions possible ,is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us .Without theirwork we should never have noticed these particular shapes and coloror have felt the delight which they brought to the artists. Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion and at rest;their choices indicate that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights.Modern artists might say that they only choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it. Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects. If one painter chooses to paint a decaying leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something—all of which means that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.41.It is hard to explain what a painter is saying,because_____.A. most painters do not express themselves wellB. a painter uses unusual words and phrasesC. a painter uses shapes and colors instead of wordsD. many painters do not say anything42.The writer says that modem artists might say their choice of subject_____.A. carries a message to the publicB. only provides interesting patternsC. has no pattern or formD. teaches the public important truths 43.The writer says that modern art contains___.A. nothing but meaningless patternsB. uninteresting aspects of the worldC.subjects chosen partly for their meaningD.completely meaningless subjects44.Implied but not stated:A. A painting is more easily understood than a symphony.B. Art is merely the arranging of shape and color.C. Every artist tries to say something to the pub-lic.D. One must look beyond shape and color to find what the artists are sayingBFeeling tired lately? Has the doctor said he cannot find anything wrong with you? Perhaps he sent you to hospital, but all the advanced equipment there shows that there is nothing wrong. Then consider this, you might be in a state of subhealth.Subhealth, also called the third state of grey state,is explained as a border line state between health and disease.According to an investigation by the National Health Organization, over 45 percent of subhealth people are middle-aged or elderly. The percentage is even higher among people who work in management positions as well as students around exam time.Symptom includes a 1ack of energy, depression, slow reactions insomnia agitation, and poor memory.Other symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating and aching in the waist and legs. The key to preventing and recovering from subhealth, according to some medical experts,is to form good 1iving habits, alternate work with rest, exercise regularly, and take part in open-air activities. As for meals, people are advised to eatless salt and sugar. They should also eat more fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, because they are rich in nutritional elements vitamins and trace elements—that are important to the body.Nutrition experts point out that it is not good to eat too much at one meal because it may cause unhealthy changes in the digestive tract. They also say that a balanced diet is very helpful in avoiding subheath.45.According to this passage, which of the following is right? A. When you are in a state of subhealth, you should stay home and keep silent.B. When you are in a state of subhealth, you should go to see a doctor and buy some medicine.C. When you are in a state of subhealth, you should have yourself examined in foreign countries.D. When you are in a state of subhealth, you should find out the reasons and relax yourself.46.Middle-aged people may feel subhealthy, because _____.A. they used up their energyB. they have lost their living hopesC. they have more pressure in life and workD. they begin to get older47.The answer of preventing you falling into a state of subhealth is that you should _____.A. work hard B. sleep moreC. keep relaxed D. take more medicine48. As for food, experts suggest that _____.A. we should never eat meatB. we should have meals with less salt sugarC. we should eat lessD. we should have meals without salt or sugarCA moment’s drilling by the dentist may make us nervous and upset. Many of us cannot stand pain.To avoid the pain of a drilling that may last perhaps a minute or two, we demand the“needle”—a shot of novocain—that deadens the nerves around the tooth. Now it’s true that the human body has developed its millions of nerves to be highly aware of what goes on both inside and outside of it.This helps us adjust ourselves to the world.Without our nerves and our brain, which is a bundle of nerves,we wouldn’t know what’s happening. But we pay for our sensitivity. We can feel pain when the slightest thing is wrong with any part of our body. The history of pain is based on the human body being open to pain. But there is a way to handle pain.Look at the Indian fakir who sits on a bed of nails.Fakirs can put a needle right through an arm,and feel no pain. This ability that some humans have developed to handle pain should give us ideas about how the mind can deal with pain. The big thing in withstanding pain is our attitude towardit. If the dentist says.“This will hurt a little,”it helps us to accept the pain.By staying relaxed, and by treating the pain as an interesting sensation,we can handle the pain without falling apart. After all, although pain is an unpleasant sensation,it is still a sensation, and sensations are the stuff of life.49.The passage is mainly about _____.A. how to suffer pain B. how to avoid painC. how to handle pain D. how to stop pain50.When the author mentions the Indian fakir he suggests thatA. Indians are not at all afraid of painB. people may be senseless of painC. some people are able to handle painD. fakirs have magic to put needles right through their arms51.The most important thing to handle pain is ___.A. how we look at painB. to feel pain as much as possibleC. to show an interest in painD. to accept the pain unwillinglyDThe Government has almost doubled its spending on computer education in schools. Mr. William Shelton, junior Education Minister, announced that the Microelectronic Education Programme(MEP) will not end in 1984. It will run for two more years until 1986 with additional funding of at least £9 million. The programme began in 1980, was originally due to end next year, and had budget(预算) of £9 million. This has been raised little by little over the past year to ~ 11 million. The programme will now run until 1986, at a total cost of around ~20 million.MEP provides courses for teachers and develops computer programmes for classroom use of personal computers. It is run in partnership (合伙) with a Department of Industry programme under which British-made personal computers are supplied to schools at half-price.In that way, virtually every secondary school has been provided with at least one computer at a central cost to the taxpayer of under ~ 5 million. The primary schools are now being supplied in a £9 million programme which got under way at the turn of the year. But, as Mr. Shehon admitted yesterday: "It's no good having the computers without the right computer programmes to put into them and a great deal more is still needed." Hence, MEP' s new funds. Mr. Shehon said yesterday that MEP's achievements in course development and teacher training had shown that the computer could be used in all courses.About 15,000 secondary teachers have taken short courses in "computer awareness" that is a necessary part of the half-price computer offer- and training materials are now being provided for 50,000 primary teachers. The reasoning behind MEP is that no child now at school can hope for a worthwhile jobin the future economy unless he or she understands how to deal with computers- not in ajob training sense, but in learning the general skill to obtain the required information of the moment from the ever-spreading flood.52. The original MEP programme was expected to _______A) last two years and cost nine million poundsB) last four years and cost nine million poundsC) last two years and cost eleven million poundsD) last four years and cost eleven million pounds53. The main aim of MEP is to help course development and ______A) provide personal computers for schoolsB) arrange for cheap computers to be supplied to schoolsC) show teachers how to use personal computersD) train teachers to work with classes using computers54. Computers have now been introduced ______A) in most secondary schoolsB) in all secondary schoolsC) in most primary schools, at half-priceD) in most schools, at no expense to the taxpayers55. The additional grant of money being provided is mainly _______A) part of the agreement to supply computers cheaplyB) to develop further computer programmes for schoolsC) to hire 50,000 primary teachersD) to provide courses for secondary teachersPart V Translation from Chinese into EnglishDirections: In this part there are five sentences, numbered 81 to 85,in Chinese. But can youcombine the two to do something for your local 26 ?It may well be possible. When you have finished with your mobile phone you will be able to 27 it in the garden or a plant pot and wait for it to flower.28 , a biodegradable (生物可降解的)mobile phone was introduced by scientists. It is hoped that the new type of phone will encourage 29 to recycle.Scientists have come up with a new material over the last five years. It looks like any other 30 and can be hard or soft. and able to change shape. Overtime it can also break down into the soil without giving out any toxic 31 . British researchers used the new material to develop a phone cover that contains a sunflower seed. When this new type of cover turns into waste, it 32 nitrates(硝酸盐). These feed the seed and help the flower grow.Engineers have designed a small 33 window to hold the seed. They have made sure it only grows when the phone is thrown away.“We’ve only put sunflower seeds into the covers so far. But we are working with plant 34 to find out which flowers would 35 best. Maybe we could put roses inSection BDirections: In this section, you are going to read a passage with ten statements attached to it. Each statement contains information given in one of theparagraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information isderived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph ismarked with a letter. Why I Became a Teacher: to Pass on My Love of LiteratureA) Like lots of people, I never thought I’d be a teacher when I was at school. To be honest l only did my training because my husband was on a four-year course and 1was on a three-year course at Cardiff University so I wanted to do something for one year. I thought doing a teaching qualification would be interesting and might be quite use full I'm convinced that nothing else I might have done would have given me so much pleasure and satisfaction, or fitted in so well with family life.B) When I retire, in just a few years’ time, I can look back on a career which made a positive difference to the lives of thousands of children. Few other career choices can be so rewarding, so if you have a love of your subject and want the opportunity to pass that on then teaching can be a great career.C) Anyone going into teaching now will be used to teaching to formal work schemes and observation. I think it has raised standards in the profession but personally I feel the loss in the classroom. I’ve got the confidence of 30 years’ experience. I’ve seen new approaches come and go (and sometime even identical “new ideas” come and go more than once).D) For me, it’s the passion for your subject and interest in the success of your students that matters more than how all the acronyms (首字母缩略词) add up. This is what will make you a good teacher. There's still room for individuals but you have to have the confidence and passion for your subject to make it work.E) The major challenge in teaching is time. There’s not enough of it. It's hard if you're working full time to cope with the marking and feel Eke you have enough time to do your job properly. I’ve worked part time ever since I had children. I officially work three days a week—trot on my two days off I always work, it probably all adds up to what counts as a full week’s work in most other jobs but the pay isn't bad so you can work part time and then the job really does fit in with family life. There are shortcuts to save time, and if had to work part time I’d have to use. them. But working part time gives me the luxury, to be a critical marker. It can take two hours to mark a 3,000-word A level essay, so if you have 16 pupils that’s 32 hours of marking in one week for just one class.F) One of the benefits of being a part-time teacher is that I do have time to mark properly. Sometimes my feedback is almost as long as their essay but 1 really want the kids to do well. One of the best things about teaching is you get to raise children's aspirations, and to make a difference in their lives. You get visits and emails from your old students to prove it! It's great to make the difference, and, as they say, it does make it all worthwhile.G ) The core of teaching is the subject and the pupils. We have a lot of NQTs and PGCE students coming to our school and sometimes I must admit to being disappointed when students don't know their subjects that well. I had an NQT who was teaching Animal Farm and asked me “What’s Marxism?”—and she’d got a first in her degree so it just goes to show that government initiatives to try and attract those with firsts aren't necessarily going work.H) However. lots of people drop out of teaching after a couple of years, it is an exhausting job. So my advice is:I) Don’t lose your sense of proportion over things that happen in the classroom or in an observation that doesn't go well. As long as in the bigger picture of things you are connecting with kids and the subject—then don’t get frustrated. Even after 30 years of teaching everyone has fearful days in teaching, he you think: “Can I really do this?” You’ve got to keep positive; it's only a problem if you gel mute bad days than good days.J) Make sure leaching doesn't overwhelm you. You have Io develop strategies especially if you are teaching a subject which requires a lot of marking. So plan things well. Get your pupils to do peer marking, which really can work. If you know you just can’t handle any more marking in a particular week, get pupils to write a speech and then perform it in the next class. You’ve got to think ahead about times of maximum workload and plan accordingly—ask your more experienced colleagues for advice K) You’ve got to keep your sense of burnout, which is a great way of relieving a situation. I know I became a better teacher when I became a parent. I realized that kids can be so unpleasant sometimes, even your own kids. They don’t mean it; they're just being kids. It doesn’t mean they bate you or hate your lessons, When you’re anew teacher coming into teaching, especially if you are young, you think of the students as almost your adversaries (对手), and you’ve got to defeat them. But you’ve got to be careful what you say. You can’t belittle them too much or you can really harm them.L) Love your subject. If you are going to succeed in secondary school leaching you must love your subject. The kids really know if you do or don’t.M) You have to know your students are individuals, they learn in different ways. You have to be sensitive to that.N ) You can’t just teach to a formula. 1 do worry about the difference between lip service to what the government say it's supposed to be like and what it’s really like. I do hate the untruthfulness of that and the gulf seems to widen more anti more. It feels like what matters most is what’s tested. The trouble is nothing that is really worthwhile can be tested. are the love of learning, connection with literature, having empathy ( 移情作用) —these are the things that really make a difference to someone’s life but of course they can’t be tested. Young teachers have to be careful not to get lost in finials and initiatives. A more experienced teacher will have confidence to respond to kids anti to talk about an issue that’s raised in class that's not on the plan. The children will learn so much from that but there's no box to tick.36. It can help relieve a situation to keep sense of humor rather than belittling your students.37.Teachers should not teach to a formula because what cannot be tested may really matter to a student's life.38.For the author, the main challenge in teaching is that there's no enough time.39.For teachers faced with a lot of marking, one strategy is to get pupils involved in peer marking.40.When dealing with things that happen in the classroom, teachers are advised to decide priorities.41.Working part time enables the author to mark students' assignments properly.42.The author believes she has received most satisfaction from teaching as a career.43. Students can tell whether a teacher loves his subject or not.44.The author thinks that teaching to formal work schemes and observation can makea loss in the classroom.45.According to the author, passion for a subject and interest in students' success will make a good teacher.Section CDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are fourchoices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice. Passage OneQuestions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage. When families gather for Christmas dinner, some will stick to formal traditions dating back to Grandma’s generation. Their tables will be set with the good dishes and silver, and the dress code will be Sunday-best.But in many other homes, this china-and-silver elegance has given way to stoneware (粗陶)—and—stainless informality, with dresses assuming an equally casual—Friday look. For hosts and guests, the change means greater simplicity and comfort. For makers of fine china in Britain, it spells economic hard times.Last week Royal Doulton, the largest employer in Stoke-on Trent, announced that it is eliminating 1,000 jobs—one-fifth of its total workforce. That brings to more than 4,000 the number of positions lost in 18 months in the pottery (陶瓷) region. Wedgwood and other pottery factories made cuts earlier.Although a strong pound and weak markets in Asia play a role in the downsizing, the layoffs in Stoke have their roots in earthshaking social shifts. A spokesman for Royal Doulton admitted that the company “has been somewhat slow in catching up with the trend” toward casual dining. Families eat together less often, he explained, and more people eat alone, either because they are single or they eat in front of television.Even dinner parties, if they happen at all, have gone causal. In a time of long work hours and demanding family schedules, busy hosts insist, rightl y, that it’s betterto share a takeout pizza on paper plates in the family room than to wait for the perfect moment or a “real” dinner party. Too often, the perfect moment never comes, Iron a fine-patterned tablecloth? Forget it. Polish the silver? Who has time?Yet the loss of formality has its down side. The fine points of etiquette(礼节) that children might once have learned at the table by observation or instruction from parents and grandparents(“Chew with your mouth closed.”“keep your elbows off the tab le.”)must be picked up elsewhere. Some companies now offer etiquette seminars for employees who may be competent professionally but clueless socially.46. The trend toward casual dining has resulted in ______.A. bankruptcy of fine china manufacturersB. Shrinking of the pottery industryC. restructuring of large enterprisesD. Economic recession in Great Britain47. Which of the following may be the best reason for casual dining?A. Family members need more time to relax.B. Busy schedules leave people no time for formality.C. People want to practice economy in times of scarcity.D. Young people won’t follow the etiquette of the older generation.48. It can be learned from the passage that Royal Doulton is _______.A. a retailer of stainless steel tablewareB. a dealer in stonewareC. a pottery chain storeD. a producer of fine china49. The main cause of the layoffs in the pottery industry is _______.A. the increased value of the poundB. the economic recession in AsiaC. the change in people’s w ay of lifeD. the fierce competition at home and abroad50. Refined table manners, though less popular than before in current social life,_______.A. are still a must on certain occasionsB. are bound to return sooner or laterC. are still being taught by parents at homeD. Can help improve personal relationshipsPassage TwoQuestions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage. It’s very interesting to note where the debate about diversity(多样化) is taking place. It is taking place primarily in political circles. Here at the College Fund, we have a lot of contact with top corporate(公司的) leaders; none of them is talking about getting rid of those instruments that produce diversity. In fact, they say that if their companies are to compete in the global village and in the global market place, diversity. In fact, they say that if their companies are to compete in the global village and in the global market place, diversity is an imperative. They also say that the need for talented, skilled Americans means we have to expand the pool of potential employees. And in looking at where birth rates are growing and at where the population is shifting, corporate America understands that expanding the pool means promoting policies that help provide skills to more minorities, more women and more immigrants. Corporate leaders know that if that does not occur in our society, they will not have the engineers, the scientists, the lawyers, or the business managers they will need.Likewise, I don’t hear people in the academy saying.”Let’s go backward. Let’s go back to the good old days, when we had a meritocracy(不拘一格选人才)” (which was never true-we never had a meritocracy, although we’ve come closer to it in the last 30 years.) I recently visited a great little college in New York where the campus has doubled its minority population in the last six years. I talked with an African American who has been a professor there for a long time, and she remembers that when she first joined the community, there were fewer than a handful of minorities on campus. Now, all of us feel the university is better because corporate board rooms or on college campuses.51. The bold word “imperative” in Para. 1 most probably refers to something _____.A. superficialB. remarkableC. debatableD. essential52. Which of the following groups of people still differ in their views on diversity?A. Minorities.B. Politicians.C. Professors.D. Managers.53. High corporate leaders seem to be in favor of promoting diversity so as to ______.A. lower the rate of unemploymentB. win equal political rights for minoritiesC. be competitive in the world marketD. satisfy the demands of a growing population54. It can be inferred from the passage that _____.A. meritocracy can never be realized without diversityB. American political circles will not accept diversityC. it is unlikely that diversity will occur in the U.S. MediaD. minorities can only enter the fields were no debate is heard about diversity55. According to the passage diversity can be achieved in American society by ____.A. expanding the pool of potential employeesB. promoting policies that provide skills to employeesC. training more engineers, scientists lawyers and business managersD. providing education for all regardless of race or sexPart IV Translation (30 minutes)Directions: F or this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to translate a passage from Chinese into English.孔子(Confucius)是我国古代著名的思想家、教育家,儒家学派(Confucian School)的创始人。

Yet even theydo not choose entirely without reference to the character of theirsubjects. If one painter chooses to paint a decaying leg and another a lake in moonlight, eachof them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is tellingus something, showing us something, emphasizing something—all of which means that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.41.It is hard to explain what a painter is saying,because_____.A. most painters do not express themselves wellB. a painter uses unusual words and phrasesC. a painter uses shapes and colors instead of wordsD. many painters do not say anything42.The writer says that modem artists might say their choice of subject_____.A. carries a message to thepublicB. only provides interesting patternsC. has no pattern or formD. teaches the public important truths43.The writer says that modern art contains___.A. nothing but meaningless patternsB. uninteresting aspects of the worldC.subjects chosen partly for their meaningD.completely meaningless subjects44.Implied but not stated:A. Perhaps he sent you to hospital, but all the advanced equipment there shows that there is nothing wrong. Then consider this, you might be in a state of subhealth.Subhealth, also called the third state of grey state,is explained as a border line state between health and disease.Accor ding to an investigation by the National Health Organization, over 45 percent of subhealth people are middle-aged or elderly. The percentage is even higher among people who work in management positions as well as students around exam time.Symptom includes a 1ack of energy, depression, slow reactions insomnia agitation, and poor memory.Other symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating and aching in the waist andlegs. The key to preventing and recovering from subhealth, according tosome medical experts,is to form good 1iving habits, alternate work withrest, exercise regularly, and take part in open-air activities. As for meals, people are advised to eatless salt and sugar. They shouldalso eat more fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, because they are richin nutritional elements vitamins and trace elements—that areimportant to the body.Nutrition experts point out that it is not good to eat too muchat one meal because it may cause unhealthy changes in the digestivetract. They also say that a balanced diet is very helpful in avoidingsubheath.45.According to this passage, which of the following isright?A. The big thing in withstanding pain is our attitude toward it.If the dentist says.“This will hurt a little,”it helps us to accept the pain.By staying relaxed, and by treating the pain as an interesting sensation,we can handle the pain without falling apart. A . h ow we look at pain B . to feel pain as much as possibleC . to show an interest in painD . to accept the pain unwillinglyDThe Governmenthasalmost doubled its spending oncomputer educationinschools. Mr.William Shelton, junior Education Minister, announced that the Microelectronic Education Programme(MEP) will not end in 1984. It will run for two more years until 1986 with additional funding of at least £ 9 million. The programme began in 1980, was originally due to end next year, and had budget(预算) of £ 9 million. This has been raised little by little over the past year to ~ 11 million. The programme will now run until 1986, at a total cost of around ~ 20 million.MEP provides courses for teachers and develops computer programmes for classroom use of personal computers. It is run in partnership (合伙 ) with a Department of Industry programme under which British-made personal computers are supplied to schools at half-price. In that way, virtually every secondary school has been provided with at least one computer at a central cost to the taxpayer of under ~ 5 million. The primary schools are now being supplied in a £ 9 million programme which got under way at the turn of the year. The reasoning behind MEP is that no child now at school can hope for a worthwhile job in the future economy unless he or she understands how to deal with computers- not in a job training sense, but in learning the general skill to obtain the required information of the moment from the ever-spreading flood.52. The original MEP programme was expected to _______ A) last two years and cost nine million pounds B) last four years and cost nine million pounds C) last two years and cost eleven million pounds D) last four years and cost eleven million pounds53. The main aim of MEP is to help course development and ______ A) provide personal computers for schoolsB) arrange for cheap computers to be supplied to schools C) show teachers how to use personal computers D) train teachers to work with classes using computers 54. Computers have now been introduced ______ A) in most secondary schools B) in all secondary schoolsC) in most primary schools, at half-priceD) in most schools, at no expense to the taxpayers55. The additional grant of money being provided is mainly _______ A) part of the agreement to supply computers cheaply B) to develop further computer programmes for schools C) to hire 50,000 primary teachersD) to provide courses for secondary teachersPart V Translation from Chinese into EnglishDirections: In this part there are five sentences, numbered 81 to 85,in Chinese.
