2023-2024学年新高考2024届高考英语第一轮专项冲刺限时集训——阅读理解(含答案)

C.They might even like to have a go at doing the exercise.D.It’s just as important to show yourself some forgiveness.E.It doesn’t mean you have to ignore what’s happened or forget it.F.Whatever it is, no matter how small it might seem, write it down.G.Whatever the mistake, remember it isn’t a fixed aspect of your personality.【正确答案】36 37.B37.B 38.F 39.C 40.G【导语】本文为一篇说明文。

文章鼓励人们练习自我宽恕,并提供了一个简单的写作练习来增强自信。

通过列出个人的优点和善良的行为,人们可以学会原谅自己的错误,并从中成长。

36.空前内容“Taking responsibility for mistakes is a positive step, but don’t beat yourself up about them. To err (犯错) is human. (为错误承担责任是积极的一步,但不要因此而自责。

人孰能无过)”可知,作者认为人都会犯错,勇于承担责任固然重要,但是也不要因此而过于自责。

结合空后“You can use the following writing exercise to help you do this. (你可以使用下面的写作练习来帮助你做到这一点)”中的“do this”以及下文内容可推断,空处应该内容和“不要太自责”相似。

选项D“It’s just as important to show yourself some forgiveness. (宽恕自己也同样重要)”与“不要太自责”语意相近,起承上启下的作用。

2014高考英语阅读理解抓分训练题(38)及答案阅读理解If you travel to a new exhibit at the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers, you will have chances to see some meat-eating plants. Take bladderworts, a kind of such plant, for example. They appear so small and grow in a quiet pond. But these are the fastest-known killers of the plant kingdom, able to capture a small insect in 1/50 of a second using a trap door!Once the trap door closes on the victim, the enzymes(酶) similar to those in the human stomach slowly digest the insect. When dinner is over, the plant opens the trap door and is ready to trap again.Meat-eating plants grow mostly in wet areas with soil that doesn’ t offer much food value. In such conditions, these amazing plants have developed insect traps to get their nutritional needs over thousands of years. North America has more such plants than any other continent.Generally speaking, the traps may have attractive appearance to fool the eye, like pitcher plants, which get their name because they look like beautiful pitchers (a container like a bottle) full of nectar(花蜜).The Asian pitcher plant, for example, has bright colors and an attractive half-closed lid. Curious insects are tempted to come close and take a sip, and then slide down the slippery (光滑的)slope to their deaths.Hair-like growths along the pitcher walls ensure that nothing cab escape, and the digestive enzymes can get to work. A tiny insect can be digested in a few hours, but a fly takes a couple of days. Some of these pitchers are large enough to hold two gallons. Meat eating plants only eat people in science fiction movies, but sometimes a bird or other small animals will discover that a pitcher plant isn’ t a good place to get a drink.【文章大意概括】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了一些特别的植物——靠捕食动物获得生长所需养分的“食肉植物”。

高考英语阅读冲刺练习题原文Why play games? Because they are fun, and a 1ot more besides. Following the rules…planning your next move...acting as a team member…these are all “game” ideas that you will come across throughout your life.Think about some of the games you played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek. Such games are entertaining and fun. But perhaps more importantly, they translate life into exciting dramas that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating (合作) .Many children’s games have a practical side Children around the world play games that prepare them for work they will do as grown-ups. For instance, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones. Which sharpens the hand-eye coordination(协调)needed in hunting. Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all, the Olympic Games, bring athletes from around the world together to take part in friendly competition. People who watch the eventwave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for an entire country, not just the athlete who earned it. For countries experiencing natural disasters or war, an Olympic win can mean so much.Sports are also an event that unites people. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. People on all continents play it—some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette Iribarne, a Californian soccer player, has discovered a way to spread hope through soccer. He created a foundation to provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a promising future.Next time you play your favorite game or sport, think about why you enjoy it, what skills are needed, and whether these skills will help you in other aspects of your life.高考英语阅读冲刺练习题( ) 1. No one really knows .Some blame the trend on a general loosening of moral values among today's youth.Others have attributed increased cheating to the fact that today's youth are far more pragmatic(实用主义的) than their more idealistic predecessors(前辈).While in the late sixties and early seventies, students were filled with visions about changing the world, today's students feel great pressure to conform(随大流) and succeed. In interviews withstudents at high schools and colleges around the country, both young men and women said that cheating had become easy. Some suggested they did it out of spite for teachers they did not respect; others looked at it as a game.Only if they were caught, some said, would they feel guilty."People are competitive." said a second-year college student named Anna, from Chicago. There's an underlying fear .If you don't do well, your life is going to be ruined .The pressure is not only from parents and friends but from yourself. To achieve. To succeed. It's almost as though we have to outdo other people to achieve our own goals.Edward Wynne, editor of a magazine blames the rise in academic dishonesty on the schools. He claims that administrators and teachers have been too hesitant to take action.Dwight Huber, chairman of the English department at Amarillo sees the matter differently, blaming the rise in cheating on the way students are evaluated." I would cheat if I felt I was being cheated," Mr.Huber said.He feels that as long as teachers give short-answer tests rather than essay questions and rate students by the number of facts they can memorize rather than by how well they can combine information, students will try to beat the system." The concept of cheating is based on the false assumption that the system is reasonable and there is something wrong with the individual who's doing it," he said , "That's too easy an answer. We've got to start looking at the system."49.Educators are finding that students who cheat ______.A.are more likely to be punished than beforeB.have poorer academic records than beforeC.can be academically weak or strongD.use the information in later years50.According to the passage, youth cheat because of______.A.the eagerness to succeedB.the easiness to cheatC.the fear of competitionD.the impossibility to be punished51.What does the underlined part '"the system" refer to?A.The education system.B.The school system.C.The system by which schools punish cheating.D.The system by which students are evaluated.52.Which of the followings would Dwight Huber probably agree with?A.The educational system is sound and students must follow every rule, B.parents alone must take responsibility for the rise in student cheating.C.There should be some changes in the evaluation system.D.Students who cheat should be expelled from school.【江苏省常州市2013冲刺模拟】BI must have been about fourteen then, and I put away the incident from my mind with the easy carelessness of youth. But the words, Carl Walter spoke that day, came back to me years later, and ever since have been of great value to me.Carl Walter was my piano teacher. During one of my lessons he asked how much practicing I was doing. I said three or four hours a day.“Do you practice in long stretches, an hour at a time?”“I try to.”“Well, don't.” he exclaimed. “When you grow up, time won't come in longstretches. Practice in minutes, whenever you can find them five or ten before school, after lunch, between household tasks. Spread the practice through the day, and piano-playing will become a part of your life.”When I was teaching at Columbia, I wanted to write, but class periods, theme-reading, and committee meetings filled my days and evenings. For two years I got practically nothing down on paper, and my excuse was that I had no time. Then I remembered what Carl Walter had said. During the next week I conducted an experiment. Whenever I had five minutes unoccupied, I sat down and wrote a hundred words or so. To my astonishment, at the end of the week I had a rather large manuscript ready for revision, later on I wrote novels by the same piecemeal method. Though my teaching schedule had become heavier than ever, in every day there were idle moments which could be caught and put to use. I even took up piano-playing again, finding that the small intervals of the day provided sufficient time for both writing and piano practice. There is an important trick in this time-using formula: you must get into your work quickly. If you have but five minutes for writing, you can't afford to waste four chewing your pencil. You must make your mental preparations beforehand, and concentrate on your task almost instantly when the time comes. Fortunately, rapid concentration is easier than most of us realize.I admit I have never learnt how to let go easily at the end of the five or ten minutes. But life can be counted on to supply interruptions. Carl Walter has had a tremendous influence on my life. To him I owe the discovery that even very short periods of time add up to all useful hours I need, if I plunge in without delay.60. What is the best title of this passage?A. Concentrate on Your Work.B. Good AdviceC. How I Became a Writer.D. A Little at a Time.61. Which of the following statements is true?A. The writer owes great thanks to his teacher for teaching him to work in long stretches.B. The writer didn't take the teacher's words to heart at first.C. Car l Walter has had a great influence on the writer’s life since he became a student.D. Rapid concentration is actually more difficult than most people imagine.62. The underlined part “counted on” can be replaced by __________.A. expectedB. concentratedC. valuedD. enriched63. We can infer that the writer ____________.A. can find sufficient time for mental preparations beforehand, so he’s devotedto work instantly.B. is always tired of interruptions in life because his teaching schedule is always heavyC. has formed a bad habit of chewing a pencil while writing his novels.D. has new books published each year however busy his teaching is.(出处:常州市北郊中学高考英语模拟卷)【参考答案】DBAA。

This year's attempt to influence the skies took place in Sao Pablo by a party's official sponsor, Skoal, a Brazilian beer brand. "The fun stops when it rains," says Pedro Ada my, Skoal's marketing director. So do beer sales. An airplane painted with Skoal's logo sprayed (喷洒) water droplets into clouds to make rain fall before the clouds reached the city. According to its YouTube video that has been viewed 12 million times, it is a "mission worthy of science fiction".Whether it's science or fiction is up for debate. The use of cloud-seeding to increase rainfall dates back to the 1940s. But the United States government stopped funding it in the 1980s due to a lack of" scientific proof of the effectiveness of intentional weather change", according to the National Research Council. A new paper based on experiments in Idaho found that seeding clouds with silver iodide increased snowfall on three occasions, but the authors say that more research is needed to find out if it can reliably promote precipitation (降水), Pablo Tartar, a Brazilian physicist, says flatly that cloud-seeding is "useless".Still, governments and firms in many countries use the technology. Sao Pablo's water company has signed million dollar contracts with ModClima to bring rain, most recently during a drought in 2014-15. Although cloud-seeding normally uses a chemical such as silver iodide to provide a surface around which water or ice droplets form, ModClima says it has invented an "experimental" method that uses water alone.Carnival-goers cheered when the first two days were cloudy but dry. Many shared Skol's video. But at around 5pm on February 24th, the sky darkened and rain poured down. Celebrants at one block party left the Skol stands and rushed to buy umbrellas and plastic rain capes.2.Why did Skol support cloud-seeding?A.To increase rainfall.B.To promote its beer sales.C.To provide evidence for a research.D.To highlight the theme of the Carnival.3.Which is Artaxo's attitude toward cloud-seeding?A.Objective.B.Doubtful.C.Conservative.D.Negative.4.Why was the US government no longer in favor of cloud-seeding?A.Its outcome couldn't be proved.B.It worked in limited situations.C.It needed more field researches.D.It used an un-ecofriendly chemical.5.What is the best title of the text?A.Could rain ruin fun?B.How do we change weather?C.Could we rely on intentional rain?D.How do we avoid cloud-seeding pollution?6.阅读理解。

Professor Martin's report says that children who attend a number of schools, because their parents have to move around the country, probably make slow progress in their studies. There are also signs, says Professor Martin, that an unusually large number of such children are mentally affected. The professor says, "It's true, my personal feeling is that children should stay in one school. Our feelings are based on research and not on any personal feeling that I or many assistants may have on the subject."Captain Thomas James, an army lecturer for the past 20 years and himself a father of two, said, "I've never heard such rubbish. Taking me for example, no harm is done to the education of my children who change school regularly—if they keep to the same system, as in our Army school. In my experience—and I've known quite a few of them—Army children are as well-adjusted (适应) as any others, if not better. What the professor doesn't appear to appreciate is the fact that in such situations children will adapt (适应) much better than grown-ups."When this was put to Professor Martin, he said that at no time has his team suggested that all such children were backward or mentally affected in some way, but simply that in their experience there was a clear tendency (倾向)."Our findings show that while the very bright child can deal with regular changes without harming his or her general progress in studies, the majority (大多数) of children suffer from constantly (不断地) having to enter a new learning situation."(1)Professor Martin's report suggests that ________.A.it may not be good for children to change schools too oftenB.parents should not move around the countryC.children are now making slow progressD.more and more children are mentally affected(2)According to the passage, Professor Martin's personal feeling ________.A.is opposite of what his report has shownB.is in a way supported by his researchC.has played a big part in his researchD.is based on his own experience as a child(3)From the passage, we can conclude that Captain James's children ________.A.have been affected by changing schoolsB.go to ordinary state schoolsC.can get used to the Army school educationD.discuss their education regularly with their father(4)According to Professor Martin, ________ suffer from changing schools regularly.A.army children B.quite a few childrenC.bright children D.few children2.阅读理解Short Story CompetitionThe competition begins at June 30 and ends at December 15.It is open to all local citizens of Ontario who are at 16 or over, except the employees and judges and anyone living with any employee of the sponsors or judges. The author's name address phone number and a 25-50-word self-introduction must be included with each entry on a separate sheet of paper. There are four types to be aware of.Eye contact is one of the most direct and powerful facial expressions. The eyes are always talking. The use of eye contact varies significantly from culture to culture. In some regions, direct eye contact is often considered a sign of trustworthiness. So, if you're in America, you should know soft, attentive eye contact would convey honesty. However, a hard, unblinking stare will send a much different message, similar to the meaning of direct eye contact in some regions.Gestures can be used to emphasize(强调)meaning. Pressing fingers together to form a steeple slows interest and determination. Touching the nose or rubbing eyes indicates discomfort. A hand to the back of the neck may indicate you are not interested in a conversation.Body posture can be closed or open. A firm handshake will give the impression of honesty. Folding arms across your chest or body is protective. People with arms folded, legs crossed and bodies turned away reject messages. A head held straight up signals a neural attitude. A head sidewards indicates interest. A head down is negative. The position of speakers and listeners: face-to-face, side-to-side, or back-to-back, can send powerful messages. In a group situation, when the leader faces the group and turns toward the one who is speaking, this conveys strong attention. When two people are communicating, competitors more possibly sit facing each other while cooperators sitside-by-side.(1)Which of the following body language can mean or express honesty?A.A head sidewards or touching the nose.B.Attentive eye contact or a firm handshake.C.A firm handshake or folding arms across one's chest.D.Attentive eye contact or folding arms across one's chest(2)What shows your discomfort in the conversation?A.Touching the nose or rubbing eyes.B.Folding arms across your chest or body.C.Putting a hand to the back of the neck.D.Pressing fingers together to form a steeple.(3)Which of the following best explains "reject" underlined in Paragraph 4?A.Feel down.B.Care for.C.Turn down.D.Agree with.(4)Which type of body language do the examples in Paragraph 5 belong to?A.Facial expressions.B.Gestures.C.Body posture.D.Space relationship.(5)What does the text mainly talk about?A.Types of body language.B.The origin of body language.C.How to learn body language.D.How to use body language. 7.阅读理解Everybody, at some point in their lives, has experienced failure. It could be something as simple as not getting the job you wanted, or getting fewer marks even after hard work. But what makes you is not your failure, but how you get back up after being hit.Once, a young school boy was caught in a fire accident in his school and was assumed that he would not live. His mother was told that he was sure to die, for the terrible fire had destroyed the lower half of his body. Even if he were to survive, he would be lame throughout his life. But the brave boy did not want to die nor did he want to be lame. Much to the amazement of the doctor, he did survive. But unfortunately from his waist down, he had no motor ability. His thin legs just hung there, lifeless. Eventually he left the hospital. But his determination to walk was unshakable. At home, when he was not in bed, he had to stay in a wheelchair. One day, he threw himself from the chair and pulled himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him. He reached the fence, raised himself up and then began dragging himself along the fence, firmly determined. He did this every day, with faith in himself that he would be able to walk unaided. With his iron determination, he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk on and off, then to walk by himself and then to run.He began to walk to school, and then run to school, to run for the joy of running. I recently let my guard down. Thirty﹣some years of marriage can do that to a woman. Give a man pruning shears and electric trimmers (电动修剪器)and he will give new meaning to "armed and dangerous."One day earlier this year, my husband said that the crab apple tree was dead."Why do you think it is dead?" I asked."Look at it. There's not a leaf on it.""There's not a leaf on anything. It's March," I said."It looked sick last fall and with this bitter winter we had, I'm convinced it's dead."The truth is he's never liked the crabapple. Sure, it has beautiful blooms in the spring, but then it gets a disease, the leaves curl, and it drops those little apples that sit on the driveway. Each passing week he pronounced the tree dead. Eventually I began to believe him. Though he agreed it would be a regrettable loss, there was a twinkle in his eye. He armed himself a couple of weeks ago and began trimming. A branch here, a branch there, a small limb, then a large limb. I watched and then decided to check the wood on some of the branches closer to the trunk. I broke one off and saw green. The crabapple was not dead. It just hadn't had time to leaf out. The tree was now falling to one side, but it was not dead. I would have told him so, but he had moved on to a maple. Once the man starts, he can't stop. One trim leads to another."Please, stop!" I called. He smiled and nodded, but he couldn't hear because he had started the hedge (树篱)trimmers and was getting ready to fix a line of hedges.Zip (飕飕声), zip, zip."What do you think?" he shouted."It's supposed to be a privacy hedge; now all that will be private are our ankles."He started the trimmers again."Stop!" Some people said it was an expected thing while others asked: Why now? What will you do?For me, making the move to Israel is the fulfillment of a dream that has lasted for my 47 years of life. I have always known that Israel is my home. Over the years Israel has been inmy heart, but I have found a number of reasons to put off making it my permanent residence: kids, the economy, education… you name an excuse, and at some point I have probably used it.Truthfully, I believe that I was always just a little bit scared. And of course I still am, with the fear factor that is reported by the press surrounding the Israeli military and economy. However, it has come to the point when I have realized that for over 2000 years we have longed for this land, and that for 47 years I have denied the opportunity to make it my home. I am finally ready to fully grasp this opportunity.Over the years, I have always loved visiting Israel. I have traveled there with my family, and enjoyed introducing thousands of travelers to the country. I have come to love all of these things about Israel as a tourist because I get to love my home. And as far as waiting for the “perfect” condition under which to make aliyah, I believe the time is now!I have been asked many times if I am nervous about moving to Israel. Before I answer, I remember that we have overcome the Greeks, the Romans, the Russian killings, Hitler and the Holocaust(大屠杀),and the armies of seven countries. How can I not feel confident that I , and my family, will overcome any difficulties that may come our way? Here are some examples.First consider something as simple as sleep. Its position presents its own challenges. The main question is whether you want your arms inside or outside the sleeping bag. If you leave your arms out, they float free in zero gravity, often giving a sleeping astronaut the look of a funny balled (芭蕾)dancer. “I'm an inside guy,” Mike Hopkins says, who returned from a six-month tour on the International Space Station. “I like to be wrapped up.”On the station, the ordinary becomes strange. The exercise bike for the American astronauts has no handlebars. It also has no seat. With no gravity, it's just as easy to pedal violently. You can watch a movie while you pedal by floating a microcomputer anywhere you want. But station residents have to be careful about staying in one place too long. Without gravity to help circulate air, the carbon dioxide you exhale (呼气) has a tendency to form an invisible (隐形的)cloud around you head. You can end up with what astronauts call a carbon-dioxide headache.Leroy Chiao, 54, an American retired astronaut after four flights, describes what happens even before you float out of your seat, "Your inner ear thinks your're falling . Meanwhile your eyes are telling you you're standing straight. That can be annoying—that's why some people feel sick.” Within a couple days —truly terrible days for some —astronauts' brains learn to ignore the panicky signals from the inner ear, and space sickness disappears.Space travel can be so delightful but at the same time invisibly dangerous. For instance, astronauts lose bone mass. That's why exercise is considered so vital that National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) puts it right on the workday schedule. The focus on fitness is as much about science and the future as it is about keeping any individual astronauts return home, and, more importantly, how to maintain strength and fitness for the two and a half years or more that it would take to make a round-trip to Mars.(1)What is the major challenge to astronauts when they sleep in space?A.Deciding on a proper sleep positionB.Choosing a comfortable sleeping bagC.Seeking a way to fall asleep quicklyD.Finding a right time to go to sleep.(2)The astronauts will suffer from a carbon-dioxide headache when _____.A.they circle around on their bikesB.they use microcomputers without a stopC.they exercise in one place for a long timeD.they watch a movie while pedaling(3)Some astronauts feel sick on the station during the first few days because _____.A.their senses stop workingB.they have to stand up straightC.they float out of their seats unexpectedlyD.whether they are able to go back to the station(4)One of the NASA's major concerns about astronauts is _____.A.how much exercise they do on the stationB.how they can remain healthy for long in spaceC.whether they can recover after returning homeD.whether they are able to go back to the station8.阅读理解I really love this saying, “Love is endless and unlimited.” For me, there's a story behind it. As he got up to investigate, he heard another sound, this one coming most definitely from outside. Looking out of his bedroom window, he noticed a tree enveloped in smoke about 500 yards away. A car wrapped around the tree's base, its engine on fire.Grabbing buckets of water, he and his wife ran to the crash site. Up close, the accident looked worse. The car was split nearly in two, and the tree was where the driver's seat ought to have been, as if planted there. No one should have survived this crash, and yet there was 20- year-old Quintin Thompson, his terrified face pressed against the driver's side window,in visible pain.Languell tried putting out the fire with his buckets of water but failed. When the flames got into the front seats, he knew he had to get the young man out. So Languell opened the car's back door and climbed in. Using a pocket knife he'd brought with him, he cut through Thompson's seat belt. Now that Thompson was free, Languell pulled him out, and dragged him to safety before the entire car was in flames. It is empathy that drove Languell to help, just as he said," My heart goes out to Thompson. When you are that close to that level of hurt, you feel it so directly." For his heroic action, Languell was added to the list of real-life heroes changing the world.4.Where was the first sound actually from?A. A house on fire.B. A car crash.C. The bedroom window.D. They also supply and recycle nutrients as well as enable a growing fish population, along with other species, for a healthy and diverse ecosystem. However, the rise in average water temperatures due to climate change has resulted in more frequent and longtime u coral bleaching (白化现象)”events that damage their health, causing fish and other sea species to abandon them.In order to restore this delicate ecosystem, scientists from the UK and Australia conducted a study that involved using loudspeakers underwater near damaged coral reefs to make them sound healthy and attract fish, potentially kick-starting the natural recovery process of coral reefs and their dependent life forms. The location for this experiment was the Great Barrier Reef in the Coral Sea, found alongside the east coast of Queensland, Australia. The site is noted to have the largest coral reef system in the world.“Healthy coral reefs are remarkably noisy places-the crackle of snapping shrimp and the whoops and grunts of fish. Young fish concentrate on these sounds when they're looking for a place to settle,”said Steve Simpson, study co-author anda professor at the University of Exeter, UK.By using loudspeakers to copy such sounds, parts of dead coral reefs were found to attract twice as many fish, compared to places where no sounds were played.“These returning fish, are crucial for coral reefs to function as healthy ecosystems. Boosting fish populations in this way could help to kick-start natural recovery processes, preventing the damage we're seeing on many coral reefs around the world,”said lead author, Tim Gordon.8.What causes the phenomenon of coral bleaching?A.Diverse species.B. Noise pollution.B.Fishing industry. D. Climbing temperatures.9.What approach is introduced to recover the coral reefs?A.Removing damaged coral reefs.B. B. Using loudspeakers to keep fish away.C.Building new homes for sea species.D.Playing certain sounds to appeal to fish.10.Why are Steve Simpson's words quoted?A.To provide some findings of the study.B.To show the progress of the experiment.C.To explain reasons for the new approach.D.To give another solution to the problem.11.What can we infer from the last paragraph?A.The attempts are in vain.B.Natural recovery is impossible.C.Initial success has been achieved.D.The coral reefs have returned to normal.【答案】DDCC四As we reflect on the evolution of fitness over the centuries, and the emergence of a well- organized and growing "fitness”market and industry, it is well to ask ourselves: what have we lost, and what have we gained?Obviously, much good has come out of these recent developments: there's widespread awareness of the importance of regular exercise, nearly every community has a gym or fitness club where people can go or pay to work out, and we understand more about how the human body works. Yet despite the many health and fitness methods, programs, and resources, the general population has never been so physically sedentary (久坐的)and out-of-shape. A recent World Health Organization report indicates that life expectancy (寿命)in the U. S. dropped for the first time since1993. The health of modem people is declining, despite highly advanced medical technologies and the booming health and fitness industry. How could that be? A large part of it is motivation. People are simply not as motivated to move their body and get healthy as they were in the past. We live in a society where the inability to operate one's body in a practical and effective manner is no longer an embarrassing condition. The fitness industry, no matter how good each new program claims to be, has failed to get the majority of people to value, practice, and enjoy physical exercise. So, should we expect the answer to this dilemma to come from even more varied, or more technologically advanced programs and equipment? Or will the solution come from a different mindset, a simpler approach and practice, and overalla new culture?12.What does the author tell us about fitness industry in paragraph 2?A.It provides better technology.B.It is supported by most people.C.It brings about positive effects.D.It costs people too much money.13.What is the main reason why people fail to do physical exercise?A. Not enough equipment.B. Lack of inner drive.C. Misguided instructions.D. Embarrassing living14. What does the author seem toA. Change attitudes to fitness.B. Rely on standard practice.C. Seek more potential customers.D. Turn to more advanced15. What is the best title for the text?A. Lost in fitnessB. Misunderstanding aboutC. Evolution of fitnessD. Importance of fitness 【答案】11--15 CBAA五Sweetest Day in America is always the third Saturday in October. This holiday is much more important in some regionsthan in others (Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo being the biggest Sweetest Day cities). It is a holiday that is gaining in popularity every year throughout the country.Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in October as a day to make someone happy. It is an occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick, aged, and orphaned, but also friends, relatives and associates whose helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed.Over 60 years ago, a man in Cleveland, believing that thecity's orphans and shutins (卧病在床的人) too often felt forgotten and neglected, thought of the idea of showing them that they were remembered. He did this through the distribution of small gifts. With the help of his friends and neighbors, he distributed these small remembrances on a Saturday in October. During the years that followed, other Clevelanders began to participate in the celebration ceremony, which came to be called “Sweetest Day”. In time, the Sweetest Day idea of spreading cheer to the underprivileged was broadened to include everyone, and became an occasion for remembering others with a kind act or a small remembrance. And soon the idea spread to other cities all over the country.Sweetest Day is not based on any single group's religious affection or on a family relationship. It is a reminder that a thoughtful word or deed enriches life and gives it meaning. Because for many people remembering takes the form of giftgiving, Sweetest Day offers us the opportunity to show others that we care, in a practical way.16. We can learn from the first paragraph that Sweetest Day is ________.A.sometimes the third Saturday in OctoberB.hardly celebrated in DetroitC.of equal importance in every part of the USAD.getting increasingly popular in the USA17. Sweetest Day was intended to remember ________.A.the young and disabledB.friends and relativesC.orphans and shutinsD.the sick and aged18. We can infer from the passage that the birthplace of Sweetest Day is ________.A.Detroit B.Cleveland C.BuffaloD.Washington【答案】DCB六Mandara seemed to know something big was about to happen. So she let out a yell, caught hold of her 2-year-old daughter Kibibi and climbed up into a tree. She lives at the National Zoo in Washington D.C..And on Tuesday, August 23rd, witnesses said she seemed to sense the big earthquake that shook much of the East Coast before any humans knew what was going on. And she’s not the only one. In the moments before the quake, an orangutan (猩猩) let out a loud call and then climbed to the top of hershelter.“It’s very different from their normal call,”said Brandie Smith, the zookeeper. “The lemurs (monkey like animals of Madagascar) will sound an alarm if they see or hear something highly unusual.”But you can’t see or hear an earthquake 15 minutes before it happens, can you? Maybe you can——if you’re an animal.“Animals can hear above and below our range of hearing,”said Brandie Smith. “That’s part of their special abilities. They’re more sensitive to the environment, which is how they survive.”Primates weren’t the only animals that seemed to sense the quake before it happened. One of the elephants made a warning sound and a huge lizard (蜥蜴) ran quickly for cover. The flamingoes (a kind of birds) gathered before the quake and stayed together until the shaking stopped. So what kind of vibrations (震动) were the animals picking up in the moments before the quake? Scientist Susan Hough said earthquakes produce two types of waves——a weak “P”wave and then a much stronger “S”wave. The “P”stands for “primary”. And the “S”stands for “secondary”. Shethinks the “P”wave might be what sets the animals off.Not all the animals behaved unusually before the quake. For example, Smith said the zoo’s giant pandas didn’t jump up until the shaking actually began. But many of the other animals seemed to know something was coming before it happened. “I’m not surprised at all,”Smith said.19. Why did Mandara act strangely one day?A. Because it sensed something unusual would happen.B. Because its daughter Kibibi was injured.C. Because it heard an orangutan let out a loud callD. Because an earthquake had happened.20. According to Brandie Smith,_____________.A. many animals hearing is sharpB. earthquakes produce two types of wavesC. primates usually gather together before a quakeD. humans can also develop the ability to sense a quake21. Which animal seems unable to sense quake?A. A giant panda.B. A flamingo.C. A lemur.D.A lizard.22. What is the best title for the passage?A. How animals survive a quakeB. How animals differ from humansC. How animals behave before a quakeD. How animals protect their young in a quake【答案】AAAC七A British-designed electronic newspaper which is made of plastic and no larger than a table mat(垫子) is to enter the market next year. The new newspaper was conceived(想出) by Cambridge University scientists. They came up with the idea of replacing silicon chips (硅片) with plastic ones. It is being developed by Plastic Logic, a company based in Dresden, Germany."It looks just like a table mat, and is as light as a magazine. But you can download hundreds of newspapers at the touch of a button, and read them quite safely," the BBC reported on its website. The plastic paper is produced in a safe "clean room" at the Plastic Logic factory, which opened last month as the world's first plastic-electronics factory. Every part of the product, from the screen to the electronics, is made of plastic. And it is described by engineer Dean Baker as "top quality". 一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解A study showed that the experiences children have in their first few years are important. These experiences affect the development of the brain. When children receive more attention, they often have higher IQs. Babies receive information when they see, hear and feel things, which makes connections between different parts of the brain. There are a hundred trillion(万亿)connections in the brain of a three-year-old child.Researcher Judit Gervain tested how good newborns are at distinguishing different sound patterns. Her researchers produced images of the brains of babies as they heard different sound patterns. For example, one order was mu-ba-ba. This is the pattern"A-B-B". Another order was mu-ba-ge. This is the pattern “A-B-C”. T he images showed that the part of the brain responsible for speech was more active during the" A-B-B" pattern. This shows that babies can tell the difference between different patterns. They also were sensitive to where it occurred in the order. Gervain is excited by these findings because the order of sounds is the building block of words and grammar." Position is key to language," she says. "If something is at the beginning or at the end, it makes a big difference: John caught the bear.' is very different from 'The bear caught John.'”Researchers led by scientist Patricia Kuhl have found that language delivered by televisions, audio books, the Internet, or smartphones-no matter how educational-doesn't appear to be enough for children's brain development. They carried out a study of nine-month-old American babies. They expected the first group who'd watched videos in Chinese to show the same kind of learning as the second group who were brought face-to-face with the same sounds. Instead they found a huge difference. The babies in the second group were able to distinguish between similar Chinese sounds as well as native listeners. But the other babies-regardless of whether they had watched the video or listened to the audio-learned nothing.(1)What makes connections in a baby's brain?A. Having a higher IQ.B. Experiencing new information.C. The baby' early age.D. The connection with other babies.(2)What did Judit Gervain and her team find in the experiment?A. Babies identify different sound patterns.B. 高考英语阅读理解冲刺练习38
You either have it, or you don’t—a sense of direction, that is. But why is it that some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map, while others can lose themselves in the next street?
Scientists say we’re all born with a s ense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don’t use is, we lose it.
“Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around,” says Jim Martland, Research Director of the project. “However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.”
Jim Martland also emphasizes that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions:
●If you are using a map, turn it so it relates to the way you are facing.
●If you leave your bi ke in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree. Note landmarks on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.
●Simplify the way of finding your direction by using lines such as streets in
a town, streams, or walls in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as tower blocks or hills which can help to find out where you are.
