Lesson 3 Ships in the Desert课后练习答案及补充练习习题全解I.1)The writer went to the Aral Sea to search for the underlying causes of the environmental crisis. What he saw there was hot dry sand.2)It was the annual layers of ice in a core sample dug from the glacier.3)Scientists were monitoring the air several times a day to chart the course of the climate change.4)Because the polar cap plays a crucial role in the world's weather system, the thinning of the polar cap might cause flood in many places of the world.5)There are more different species of birds in each square mile of the Amazon than exist in all of North America. The destruction of the Amazon rain forest will mean silencing thousands of songs we have never even heard.6)The writer calls noctilucent clouds"ghosts in the sky". As a result of pollution, the clouds occasionally appear when the earth is first cloaked in the evening darkness. And they appear more often because of a huge buildup of methane gas in the atmosphere.7)Because we are not yet awakened to take effective measures to deal with the climate change.8)Carbon dioxide's ability to trap heat in the atmosphere causes global warming. Because global warming seriously threatens the global climate equilibrium that determines the pat- tern of winds, rainfall, surface temperatures, ocean cur- rents, and sea level. These in turn determine the distribution of vegetative and animal life on land and sea and have a great effect on the location and pattern of human societies.9)The two key factors are human population and the scientific and technological development. The dramatic changes that have occurred in these two factors are a sudden and startling surge in human population and a sudden acceleration of the scientific and technological revolution.10)The writer's solution to our ecological problems is to reinvent and finally heal the relationship between human beings and the earth by carrying out a careful reassessment of all the {actors that led to the relatively recent dramatic change in the relationship.Ⅱ.1)It was not at all possible to catch a large amount of fish.2)Following the layers of ice in the core sample, his finger came to the place where thelayer of ice was formed 2050 years ago.3)keeps its engines running for fear that if he stops them, the metal parts would be frozen solid and the engines would not be able to start again4)Bit by bit trees in the rain forest are felled and the land is cleared and turned into pasture where cattle can be raised quickly and slaughtered and the beef can be used in ham- burgers.5)Since miles of forest are being destroyed and the habitat for these rare birds no longer exists, thousands of birds which we have not even had a chance to see will become extinct.6)Thinking about how a series of events might happen as a consequence of the thinning of the polar cap is not just a kind of practice in conjecture (speculation), it has got practical Value.7) We are using and destroying resources in such a huge amount that we are disturbing the balance between daylight and darkness.8) Or have we been so accustomed to the bright electric lights that we fail to understand the threatening implication of these clouds.9)To put forword the question in a different way10)and greatly affect the living places and activities of human societiesll)We seem unaware that the earth's natural systems are delicate.12)And this continuing revolution has also suddenly developed at a speed that doubled and tripled the original speed.Ⅲ. Omitted.XIV.We Must Protect Our Ecological SystemWith the development of human civilization, man has created countless wonders, but at what a price! Our ecological sys-tem, on which all animals' existence depends, has been seriously damaged and is still being threatened. The earth's temperature is getting higher, more and more forests are being felled, large numbers of animals are facing extinction, and deserts are expanding at an incredible rate. The causes for the worsening ecological system are manifold. Perhaps two of the major problems lie in people's pursuit of short-term interests with little attention to long-term interest sand their pursuit of individual interests rather than collective interests. In the first case, many lakes are filled to grow crops or even build houses; trees are cut down, only bare mountains stand cold in the wind and are capable of holding no water when it rains. In the second case, scenic spots become dirty and deserted because of newly established nearby factories producing waste water and air; industrial countries invest heavily in chemical factories in the Third World nations, keeping their own land relatively clean. To solve the problems mentioned above, we should try our best to balance short-term interests with long-term ones by making long-term plans and taking as many things as possible into consideration. We're living today and are still to live tomorrow we and our posterity both have to live on the earth. Besides, Global action should be taken to protect our ecological system. People, eastern or western, rich or poor, should join their hands to prevent our ecological system from being further damaged. We have only one earth and we have to make it a better world.《高级英语》第一册练习Lesson 3Ships in the DesertⅠ. Choose the best words to complete the sentences.1. The comprehension and appreciation of the words describing sound, colour, light, heat, size and smell.3. The appreciation of the words and expressions used for stress and exaggeration.4. Some useful expressions such as to make a point of, it is a point of honour…, and etcBackground informationThis text is taken from Advanced Comprehension and Appreciation Pieces (1962), which was intended for students preparing for the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency Examination, & for students in the top class of secondary schools or in the first year of a university course. The Middle Eastern BazaarThe Middle Eastern bazaar takes you back hundreds --- even thousands --- of years. The one I am thinking of particularly is entered by a Gothic - arched gateway of aged brick and stone. You pass from the heat and glare of a big, open square into a cool, darkcavern which extends as far as the eye can see, losing itself in the shadowy distance. Little donkeys with harmoniously tinkling bells thread their way among the throngs of people entering and leavingthe bazaar. The roadway is about twelve feet wide, but it is narrowed every few yards by little stalls where goods of every conceivable kind are sold. The din of the stall-holder; crying their wares, of donkey-boys and porters clearing a way for themselves by shouting vigorously, and of would-be purchasers arguing and bargaining is continuous and makes you dizzy. Then as you penetrate deeper into the bazaar, the noise of the entrance fades away, and you come to the muted cloth-market. The earthen floor, beaten hard by countless feet, deadens the sound of footsteps, and the vaulted mud-brick walls and roof have hardly any sounds to echo. The shop-keepers speak in slow, measured tones, and the buyers, overwhelmed by the sepulchral atmosphere, follow suit .One of the peculiarities of the Eastern bazaar is that shopkeepers dealing in the same kind of goods do not scatter themselves over the bazaar, in order to avoid competition, but collect in the same area, so that purchasers can know where to find them, and so that they can form a closely knit guild against injustice or persecution . In the cloth-market, for instance, all the sellers of material for clothes, curtains, chair covers and so on line the roadway on both sides, each open-fronted shop having a trestle trestle table for display and shelves for storage. Bargaining is the order of the cay, and veiled women move at a leisurely pace from shop to shop, selecting, pricing and doing a little preliminary bargaining before they narrow down their choice and begin the really serious business of beating the price down.It is a point of honour with the customer not to let the shopkeeper guess what it is she really likes and wants until the last moment. If he does guess correctly, he will price the item high, and yield little in the bargaining. The seller, on the other hand, makes a point of protesting that the price he is charging is depriving him of all profit, and that he is sacrificing this because of his personal regard for the customer. Bargaining can go on the whole day, or even several days, with the customer coming and going at intervals .One of the most picturesque and impressive parts of the bazaar is the copper-smiths' market. As you approach it, a tinkling and banging and clashing begins to impinge on your ear. It grows louder and more distinct, until you round a corner and see a fairyland of dancing flashes, as the burnished copper catches the light of innumerable lamps and braziers . In each shop sit the apprentices –boys and youths, some of them incredibly young – hammering away at copper vessels of all shapes and sizes, while the shop-owner instructs, and sometimes takes a hand with a hammer himself. In the background, a tiny apprentice blows a bi-, charcoal fir e with a hugeleather bellows worked by a string attached to his big toe -- the red of the live coals glowing, bright and then dimming rhythmically to the strokes of the bellows. Here you can findbeautiful pots and bowlsengrave with delicate andintricate traditionaldesigns, or the simple, everyday kitchenwareused in this country, pleasing in form, butundecorated and strictlyfunctional. Elsewherethere is the carpet-market,with its profusion of richcolours, varied textures and regional designs -- some bold and simple, others unbelievably detailed and yet harmonious. Then there is the spice-market, with its pungent and exotic smells; and thefood-market, where you can buy everything you need for the most sumptuous dinner, or sit in a tiny restaurant with porters and apprentices and eat your humble bread and cheese. The dye-market, the pottery-market and the carpenters' market lie elsewhere in the maze of vaulted streets which honeycomb this bazaar. Every here and there, a doorway gives a glimpse of a sunlit courtyard, perhaps before a mosque or a caravanserai , where camels lie disdainfully chewing their hay, while the great bales of merchandise they have carried hundreds of miles across the desert lie beside them.Perhaps the most unforgettable thing in the bazaar, apart from its general atmosphere, is the place where they make linseed oil. It is a vast, sombre cavern of a room, some thirty feet high and sixty feet square, and so thick with the dust of centuries that the mudbrick walls and vaulted roof are only dimly visible. In this cavern are three massive stone wheels, each with a huge pole through its centre as an axle. The pole is attached at the one end to an upright post, around which it can revolve, and at the other to a blind-folded camel, which walks constantly in a circle, providing the motive power to turn the stone wheel. This revolves in a circular stone channel, into which an attendant feeds linseed. The stone wheel crushes it to a pulp, which is then pressed to extract the oil .The camels are the largest and finest I have ever seen, and in superb condition –muscular, massive and stately. The pressing of the linseed pulp to extract the oil is done by a vast ramshackle apparatus of beams and ropes and pulleys which towers to the vaulted ceiling and dwarfs the camels and their stonewheels. The machine is operated by one man, who shovels the linseed pulp into a stone vat, climbs up nimbly to a dizzy height to fasten ropes, and then throws his weight on to a great beam made out of a tree trunk to set the ropes and pulleys in motion. Ancient girders girders creak and groan , ropes tighten and then a trickle of oil oozes oozes down a stone runnel into a used petrol can. Quickly the trickle becomes a flood of glistening linseed oil as the beam sinks earthwards, taut and protesting, its creaks blending with the squeaking and rumbling of the grinding-wheels and the occasional grunts and sighs of the camels.(from Advanced Comprehension and Appreciation pieces, 1962 )NOTES1) This piece is taken from Advanced Comprehension and Appreciation Pieces, compiled for overseas students by L. On a summer Sunday most of the roads that lead to the sea are congested with cars full of people eager to get a breath of sea air. Once at the beaches, the children hasten to unload their buckets and spades and start to build sandcastles or paddle in the shallow water. Father may go for a swim or sit and doze in his deck-chair while mother reads. In the evening when everyone is full of food, ice-cream and rock (a hard sweet in the form of a long stick), there is the long slow drive home on roads crowded with returning cars. The south coast is Britain's warmest and sunniest region. Along the whole coastline from Dover to Land's End are seaside towns with hotels and boarding houses, piers and promenades, cafes and restaurants, all catering for the thousands of visitors and holiday-makers. Brighton is one of the best-known south coast resorts and is very popular for day trip excursions. It is only fifty miles from London and can be reached by fast train in an hour. At the week-end the pebbled beaches are thronged with people sunbathing or picking their way to the water's edge for a dip. And always, at the end of the pier, there are few hopeful people fishing. At Bouremouth (in Dorset), which is a hundred miles from London, the beaches are wide and sandy. White houses line the cliff tops and narrow chines (deep, narrow ravines), densely wooded with pine trees, reach down to the shore. The area near to the town of Torquay, on the Devon coast, is sometimes called Britain's Riviera and the climate is so mild that palm trees grow along the sea front.Blackpool, on the north-west coast, is a popular resort for the people in the industrial north. Blackpool is a gay, noisy town, famous for its fun-fair and the illuminations. At night people travelfrom miles around to see the extravaganza of lights decorating the sea front.Southend, on the east coast at the mouth of the Thames, is, like Brighton, a favorite resort of Londoners, particularly those from the East End. The sea shore is mainly gray mud, but this does not deter the crowds who come by train, car and Thames pleasure-steamer to enjoy themselves on Southend's front and mile-long pier. The pier is the longest in Britain and offers a great variety of differing entertainments. These, then, are a very few of the holiday resorts scattered along Britain's coastline. For most Britons ‘holiday' and ‘seaside holiday' mean one and the same thing and, in the last fifty years or so, ‘resorts' of every kind have sprung up to cater to the Englishman's need to spend a part of the year, however briefly, by the seaside. Of course, many British people go abroad for their holidays, and package tours to warmer countries are very popular with those who can afford them. Questions 1-5 are based on Passage 1.1. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A:There are palm trees growing near Bournemouth.B:Southend has the longest pier in Britain.C:Children usually like to build sandcastles or paddle in the shallow water at the seaside.D:It is only fifty miles from London to Brighton.参考答案:DExercise 3 E-C Translation1.生活的艺术在于懂得什么时候该抓住,什么时候该放手。

西南[0848]高级英语一20年6月机考大作业参考答案

西南大学网络与继续教育学院课程考试试题卷类别:网教2020年5月课程名称【编号】:高级英语一【0848】A卷大作业满分:100 分要答案:wangjiaofudaoExercise 1Choose any one of the following passages and then translate it into Chinese. Passage 1 (From Unit 1)Failure is a better teacher than success since success always encourages repetition of old behavior whereas failure can prompt fresh thinking, a change of direction. After twelve years of studying ballet a friend of mine applied to join a professional company. She was turned down. “Would further training help?”she asked. The ballet master shook his head. “You will never be a dancer,”he said. “You haven’t the body for it.”In such cases, the way to use failure is to face the reality (face the music) courageously, asking “What have I left? What else can I do?”My friend put away her toe shoes and moved into dance therapy, a field where she’s both competent and useful.Passage 2 (From Unit 4)!On the positive side, there are a number of things worth recommending, such as the following:0 l1. Ask others about themselves; at the same time, be on guard not to talk too much about yourself.2. Keep you voice modulated. Laugh when moved to do so but avoid raucous laughter, and don’t giggle at your own remarks.:3. Listen to whoever is speaking and make it apparent that you are listening by not letting your eyes wander or your attention be diverted.4. If another person joins the conversation, bring him briefly up to date on what is being discussed and encourage him to join the conversation.5. At dinner parties, break the ice by turning to the person sitting next toyou and asking some question that is calculated to elicit an answer that can then become the subject of conversation. It does not make much difference what you ask if it succeeds in getting other person to speak.Passage 3 (From Unit 15)The race will intensify year by year —with far-reaching impacts on society. Who “owns”the bottom of the ocean and the marine life that covers it? As ocean mining becomes feasible and economically advantageous, we can expect the resource balance among nations to shift. The Japanese already extract 10,000,000 tons of coal each year from underwater mines; tin is already being ocean-mined by Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. Before long nations may go to war over patches of ocean bottom. We may also find sharp changes in the rate of industrialization of what are now resource-poor nations.Exercise 2 Skimming and Scanning (10x3=30);In this part, you are required to go over the passage quickly. For questions 1-7, choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D.For questions 8-10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage.1. When the bride and groom begin to exchange their rings, it is a symbol of their ___________.A Few Aspects of American LifeTravelIt’s summertime. For many Americans, this is the season to travel. Why? Because school is over and the weather is great. And most of all, they believe they deserve a break. When Americans take a break, they often head for their favorite vacation spot.Throughout their history, Americans have been people on the move. The early immigrants had to travel to get to the New World. Once they arrived, they settled along the East Coast. But they weren’t content to stay here. Explorers and traders journeyed to the unknown western territories. Later, settlers moved west todevelop new areas. As a result of this west movement, Americans eventually occupied the whole continent—from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Even today, Americans seem unable to stay put. Research says that average American moves every five years.Americans are used to traveling. Some people make long-distance commuting to work daily. Their jobs may even require them to take frequent business trips. Most companies provide an annual vacation for their employees, and people often use that time to travel. Some people just visit friend or relatives in distant states. Some go on low-budget weekend trips and stay in economy motels. Those with more expensive tastes choose luxurious hotels. Camping out in the great outdoors appeals to adventurous types. Some travel in recreational vehicles to camp out in comfort, while others “rough it”by sleeping in tents. Families often plan their trips with the kids in mind. More and more “family friendly”hotels offer special programs for children.Americans love pets. Many pet owners treat their pets as a part of the family. You might say Americans treat their pets like they treat their children—sometimes even better. In America, there are more households with pets than those with children. At least 43 percent of US homes have pets of some sort. Usual creatures, such as monkeys, snakes and even wolves, find a home with some Americans. More common pets include fish, mice and birds. But the all-time favorites are cats and dogs, even at the White House. Americans sometimes have strong feelings about whether dogs or cats make better pets. “Dog people”and “cat people”often enjoy friendly competition. Many grocery stores in America sell pet foods. Pets can even accompany their owners on vacation. Fancy hotels are beginning to accommodate both man and animal. Animal guests at Four Seasons Hotels can enjoy delicious meals served on fine china and sleep in soft beds. The average American enjoys having pets around, and for good reason.Researchers have discovered that interacting with animals lowers a person’s blood pressure. Dogs can offer protection from robbers and unwelcome visitors. Cats can help rid the home of unwanted mice. Little creatures of all shapes and sizes can provide friendship and love. In many cases, having a pet prepares a young couple for the responsibilities of parenthood. Pets even encourage social relationships: they give their owners an appearance of friendliness, and they provide a good subject of conversation.Pets are as basic to American culture as hot dogs or apple pie. To Americans, pets are not just property, but a part of the family.Marriage“I do.”To Americans, these two words carry great meaning. They can even change your life, especially if you say them at your own wedding. Making wedding promises is like signing a contract. Now Americans don’t really think marriage is a business deal. But marriage is a serious business. It all begins with engagement. Traditionally, a young man asks the father of his sweetheart for permission to marry her. If the father agrees, the man later proposes to her. Often he tries to surprise her by asking her to marry him in a romantic way.Sometimes the couple just decides together that the time is right to get married. They may be engaged for weeks, months or even years. As the big approaches, bridal showers and bachelor’s parties provide many gifts. Today many couples also receive counseling during engagement. This prepares them for the challenges of married life.At last it’s time for the wedding. Although most weddings follow long-held traditions, there’s still room for individualism. For example, the usual place for a wedding is in a church. But some people get married outdoors. A few even have the ceremony while skydiving or riding on horseback! The couple may invite hundreds of people or just a few close friends. They choose their own style of colors, decorations and music during the ceremony. But some things rarely change. The bride usuallywears a beautiful, long white wedding dress. She traditionally wears “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue”. The groom wears a formal suit. Relatives and close friends participate in the ceremony.6 {$ c6 o: V( y& ?As the ceremony begins, the groom stands with the minister, facing the audience. Music signals the entrance of the beautiful bride. Nervously, the young couple repeats their promises. Traditionally, they promise to love each other “for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health”. But sometimes the couple composes their own promises. They give each other a gold ring as a symbol of their marriage promise. Finally the minister announces the big moment: “I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss your bride!”Exercise 3 Writing (1x40=40)'Write a composition of about 200 words on any one of the following topicsife without InternetMy Views on Studying AbroadTime and Tide Wait for No ManYou are to write in three paragraphs. In the first paragraph, state clearly what your view is.)In the second paragraph, support your view with details."In the last paragraph, bring what you have written to a natural conclusion with a summary or suggestion.:Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness.
