The Inventor of LEDWhen Nick Holonyak set out to create a new kind of visible lighting using semiconductor(半导体)alloys(合金), his colleagues thought he was unrealistic. Today, his discovery of light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, is used in everything from DVDs to alarm clocks to airports. Dozens of his students have continued his work, developing lighting used in traffic lights and other everyday technology. On April 23, 2004, Holonyak received the $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize at a ceremony in Washington. This marks the 10th year that the Lemelson-MIT Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has given the award to prominent inventors.“Anytime you get an award, big or little, it's always a surprise,” Holonyak said.Holonyak, 75, was a student of John Bardeen an inventor of the transistor (晶体管), in the early 1950s. After graduate school, Holonyak worked at Bell Labs. He later went to General Electric, where he invented a switch now widely used in house dimmer switches. Later, Holonyak started looking into howsemiconductors could be used to generate light. But while his colleagues were looking into how to generate visible light, he wanted to generate visible light. The LEDs he invented in 1962 now last about 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs, and are more environmentally friendly and cost effective.Holonyak, now a professor of electrical and computer engineering and physics at the University of Illinois, said he suspected that LEDs would become as commonplace (平凡的) as they are today but didn't realize how many uses they would have.“You don't know in the beginning. You think you're doing something important, you think it's worth doing, but you really can't tell what the big payoff (成果) is going to be, and when, and how. You j ust don't know,” he said. The Lemelson-MIT Program also recognized Edith Flanigen, 75, with the $100,000 Lemelson. Lacking in Self-Esteem(自尊)?Good for you!According to psychological and educational theories, self-esteem is essential for a successful life. Generations of children, especially minority kids, have been educated according to the theory (that they lack self-esteem), and that this deficiency is central to any problems (they may have in making their way in the world).Well, guess what? A new research has found that self-esteem can be just as high among grade D students and drunk drivers as it is among Nobel Prize winners and former presidents. In fact, people with high self-esteem can engage in,far more anti-social behavior than those with low self-esteem.“We used to believe that high self-esteem would cause all sorts of positive consequences and that if we raised self-esteem,people would do better in life,”a researcher said.“Mostly, the data have failed to support that.'Racists, street thugs and school bullies all have high scores on the self-esteem tests. And you can see why.If you think you're highly gifted, you're particularly offended if other people don't treat you that way.So you hit out or commit crimes to defend your pride. After all,who are they to suggest that you could be doing something wrong? What do they know?Self-esteem can also be an educational concern.College teachers are constantly complaining about the high self-esteem of their students. When every grade in the school is assessed so as to,make the kid feel good rather than to give an accurate measure of his work, the kid can develop self-esteem dangerously unrelated to the truth. When he's told he is getting a C grade in college,he can then get deeply offended or extremely angry.Weak professors give in to the pressure-hence,grade inflation, which results in their students'vague touch with reality.1. It is believed that minority kids often have self-esteem problem.A. TrueB. FalseC. Not Given2.A new research shows that high self-esteem is essential to success.。

Being "Cool" in Middle SchoolA new study shows that gentle and quiet kids in middle school will grow up to rule. Or, at least, they'll live healthier and more productive lives than the "cool" kids will. The study looked at 13-year-olds who acted old for their age by having "cool" behavior, such as early romantic relationships. They were seen as "cool" and popular kids. But as they grew up, things changed. The study found that these kids tended to have problems with drugs and relationships by their early 20s.Their behavior was no longer linked with popularity. Instead, they were thought to be less socially skilled by their peers. Besides, the average "cool" kids, by age 22, did more poorly than the average kids in the study. They had a 45 percent greater rate of problems due to drugs and alcohol. They also had a 22 percent greater rate of criminal behavior. The study also found that these kids failed to develop important life skills. They spent so much time trying to seem cool. They didn't develop the skills needed for meaningful friendships. The study followed 86 male and 98 female middle school students for a 10-year period. It has some surprising findings. In particular, the study notes that the so-called "cool" behavior is a predictor (预示)of future problems with drugs and alcohol. In fact, it is a better predictor than drug and alcohol use in middle school. However, one conclusion of the study is welcome. Researchers said that parents shouldn't worry too much if their kids don't seem that popular. If a kid prefers to spend Saturday nights at home watching a movie or reading instead of going out with friends, that is not a cause for concern. Many "uncool" kids, they said, do much better later on than the popular kids do.1.Gentle kids are less healthy when they grow up.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given2."Cool" kids try to imitate adult behavior.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given3.Romantic relationships seem cool to some teenagers.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given4."Uncool" kids are more likely to commit crimes.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given5."Cool" kids have better life skills than "uncool" kids.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given6."Uncool" kids spend most of their time studying.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given7.The study followed the students for a decade.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given8."Cool" kids marry earlier than "uncool" kids.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given9.Parents needn't worry if their kids are "uncool".A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given10."Cool" kids remain popular all their lives.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given第二部分:阅读选择(第11〜15题,每题2分,共10分)阅读下面短文,请从短文所给各题的4个选项(A、B、C、D)中选出1个最佳选项,并在答题卡相应位置上将该项涂黑。

2023年4月高等教育自学考试00015英语(二)答案及解析
2023年4月高等教育自学考试全国统一命题考试英语(二)(课程代码00015)一、阅读判断Why Dogs Bury Their Favorite BonesYou may find it crazy that your dog buries his favorite bone or chew toy, only to dig it up a day or two later, but there is actually a reason behind it---it is simply in their nature. For thousands of years, dogs have buried their bones. The practice itself started long before dogs were even pets when they had to bury bones to survive. When dogs lived in the wild, sometimes food was scarce. If they were able to find food, dogs became very protective of it. Sometimes they would have more bones than they could eat for one meal. To keep other dogs and animals from stealing their bones, dogs would bury them in the ground. When it was time for the next meal, they would dig up their bones and enjoy them again. This would continue until the bones were gone.Even though most dogs have plenty of food to eat today, their instincts sill tell them to bury their bones and favorite toys. They do this to keep other dogs and animals from stealing them, just like their ancestors did. Some dogs keep at least two bones buried at once. When they want to dig up one, they will bury one more. This may leave a backyard full of holes and bones. How do dogs decide where to bury their bones? A dog cannot bury a bone just anywhere. He must first find the perfect spot. This involves using his nose to find a spot that is free from other dogs and animals. Often it is near a tree or a large rock, but it could be anywhere in the yard. Once the dog finds the perfect spot, he uses his front paws to dig a hole, drops the bone in and covers up the hole to protect his treasure.1) Dogs bury their favorite bones or chew toys by nature.A. TrueB. FalseC. Not Given【正确答案】 A【答案解析】 by nature:天生地,生性。

Booking Online and Saving the EnvironmentWhen you are looking to book a holiday,it is unlikely that you will think about how green your booking decision is,but it is something that you should think about.By“green”we mean the impact on the environment. When looking to book a holiday, you will probably find that you are faced with two main decisions. The first is to go into a travel agency, pick up brochures(宣传册),read through them and go back with just one and book with the travel agents directly or over the phone. The second is to go onto the Internet. The Internet holds many advantages over the travel agencies. The main one isconvenience. You can go online to look at holidays at any time of the day.The travel agents, however, are usually very busy at times when people can actually go,i.e.lunch hours or at the weekend. You could use the telephone, but you wouldn't be able to see the pictures or the details of the holidays,so you would probably be sent a brochure anyway.o There are websites on the Internet that make shopping for holiday deals much easier. These websites are known as price comparison websites. They search through lots of different tour operators, and the results are displayed on one page, from which you can choose.Compared with the travel agencies, booking online is greener. The piles of brochures are definitely not green, and the amount of unnecessary paper used can't be good for the environment. In the days of the Internet, there is really no need for such a large amount of paper to be wasted. So booking online will not only save you time and effort, it will do a little bit towards saving the environment, too!1. When planning holidays, few people will think about being green.A. TrueB. A few form groups which journey together, but most of them travel alone. And they travel through a universe so large that one star seldom comes near to another. For the most part each star makes its journey in complete loneliness, like a ship on an empty ocean. The ship will be well over a million miles from its nearest neighbor. From this it is easy to understand why a star seldom finds another anywhere neat it. We believe, however, that some two thousand million years ago, another star wandering(漫游) through space, happened to come near our sun, Just as the sun and the moon raise tides(潮汐)on the earth, so this star must have raised tides on the surface of the sun .But they were very different from the small tides that are raised in our oceans; a large tidal wave must have travelled over the surface of the sun, at last forming a mountain so high that we cannot imagine it. As the cause of the disturbance(动荡) came nearer, so the mountain rose higher and higher. And before the star began to move away again, its tidal pull had become so powerful that this mountain was torn to pieces and threw off small parts of itself into space. These small pieces have been going round the sun ever since. They are the planets(行星).31.
